Spontaneously stopped in for lunch, alone, on a rainy Monday. Receptionist was friendly and seated me straight away. Had heard from coworkers that it was on the better side of Anchorage pizza establishments. I was not disappointed. I ordered the Greek pizza and it was yum. The lamb was very good and the other flavors fit in well along with it. Service was great. Waitress did all she should have done, refilling the drinks and such. Looking forward to going back and trying another pizza soon.

Update to this: I got some indirect resolution from the new manager - he seems to care quite a bit about how things operate there, and I know him from a previous restaurant he worked at, so I'll be giving Fat P another chance. I also realize one star was a little harsh for a rating before, so when I calmed down I think a middle of the road rating is fair, and we'll see how it goes next time. Hope they hire good hostesses from here on out. So I ordered food for an Official Yelp Event - I called and prepaid for the food, with a specific pick up time. The online menu is different from what's available now, so I ordered two orders of brushed and two orders of hummus, plus a half dozen pizzas of different varieties - When my rep went to pick up the food, the receptionist told her they didn't have any order for her, and she should go to Flattop (the "other" pizza joint downtown... No checking, nothing - just a "we don't have it". So my rep goes too the OTHER place - no order. She comes BACK and I send her BACK to Fat P, and called the receptionist - I get: "SIGH - We don't have ANY orders for you, I TOLD someone that already". So - PLEASE, will you check with someone? Receptionist has a cordless phone obviously and DOESNT MUTE IT while she carries the phone TWENTY FEET to the pizza bar, and says "some guy says he has an order here..." "Yeah, for pickup." "Um... Yes" "It's right there." "..." "Sir? They're just about done with it." JUST ABOUT DONE? I HEARD THAT - with the UNmuted cordless phone you busted yourself LYING - and we heard you ask the manager "do you want to talk to this person?" When we called and ordered the food!! My rep was there and it was done, and cool. The bruschetta was soggy and the pizzas were cool. Clearly this order would have been warm and on time had the receptionist bothered to care to walk over and see if the order was ready... Not like this was for a YELP event, that ended up on channel 4 and 13 or anything...

I know I'm in the minority, but I really don't like this place. I've had take out from there once (which was hmmm... mkay I guess) and I've eaten there once. I gotta say, I'm not a fan. I like wood fired pizza, but there are some issues in the kitchen. Making wood fired pizza can be tricky to ensure the center is fully cooked without the crust being burnt. Clearly they haven't figured out how to get it right consistently. And the time that I ate there, I'm not kidding you when I say that the smell of the pizza had me LITERALLY (not figuratively) gagging. I don't know WTF they did to the pizza but it smelled rotten. I don't know if I'll ever be able to get over that and try it again. I also don't care for the atmosphere... it's kinda too trendy and exposed for me. I don't like being on display. And the chairs are uncomfortable. And I don't like having to look for the hostess. This place just isn't for me. There's plenty of other places in town that are doing the same thing and charging less, so I'll just go elsewhere.

Good pizza. Very generous with the toppings. Ordered the reindeer sausage pizza, and wish the flavor of the sausage stood out more. Got to try a bite of the beer cheese pizza, and it was a good balance of cheese with a subtle hint of beer. The crusts were quite delicious, too.

I have visited Fat Ptarmigan twice, once their first week and once recently. Both times were very good, and I was pleased with everything I tasted. I know others have mentioned crust consistency problems, and this has been true for us, though nothing drastic--some slight undercooking. This is the only weak point in the food, and it only happened on one of the three pizzas we orders the first time (with a large group) and on one of two slices the second visit. Yes, they need to rectify this, and they've been around enough to have done so. But I like the crust flavor and thinness and topping flavors so much, as well as their apps and salads, that I still give it a four. I've tasted their meatballs twice, the knots and artichoke spread once, and a few of the salads. All are excellent! Especially the meatballs, which I ordered with the flatbread last time (which was perfectly cooked). The salads are particularly tasty, with fresh, crispy lettuce bases, nicely balanced toppings, and just the right amount of dressing--not drenched, not skimpy. Last time, I found myself wishing the pesto with meat had more meat, but mainly because I have a thing for cured sausages. It was actually pretty balanced. Ambiance: comfy, casual but chic. I like the color scheme, the open industrial look with the stark colors. The seating is plentiful, the space open. I haven't noticed it being too loud, but I haven't been there when it was super crowded. Service: so far, so good. Our last server stumbled a bit on beer recommendations (not a problem for me, since I don't drink beer and I knew what wine I wanted, but I know many beer heads who'd be bothered). But help is always friendly and timely. This restaurant adds a nice option to downtown dining, and while I don't crave restaurant pizza often (pajama-couch pizza is more my style), when I do, this is where I'll go. Food is good and the atmosphere is great. Check it out!

Good good! Fast. Friendly server. We both ate for $35 and we were stuffed... Included the beers. We ordered s pesto chicken pizza, two oatmeal stouts, one dessert to share, and s cop of coffee. Pizza was really good, crust was wood oven toasted. Dessert was a little sweet.. But hubby likes it that way. Place would have been a 5 star except it was too noisy. Loud. Would come again, but might try north side of seating.

I'm not sure why this place doesn't get 4 stars. It was a great little contemporary pizza/Italian place in Anchorage. We had the beer cheese pizza, which had reindeer sausage and bacon, scallions and red peppers. It was really good! Would definitely recommend!

  • Sean W.

Great pizza. Good beer list. Okay atmosphere, although it's pretty much the same style as any new bar/restaurant opened in Anchorage in the last 2-3 years. Sort of an upscale faux industrial.

  • Steven S.

I really liked this spot. Downtown Anchorage dinner options can get crowded, but this place was surprisingly available at peak hours. Normally that might be a bad sign, but not at all here. Very comfortable atmosphere, upbeat & professional servers, and some uniquely outstanding pizzas. For example, the reindeer pizza! No, no, no, it's not what you think. There were no antlers on the pizza and no mysterious red nose glowing in the center of the pie. The pizza, however, is indescribably delicious. Well worth the price. And of course, you can get ptarmigan on your pizza which is great as well. Drop by here if you're ever in Anchorage, Alaska.

If you want legit true Italian pizza, or at least something comparable to NYC and what a pizza was meant to be, eat here. Otherwise, go to Moose's Tooth for American style pizza. This place is a hidden gem, the pizzas were cooked to perfection and not heavy on the stomach. Will gladly come again

Stopped by for lunch and the food was excellent but the service was so slow. It took forever to get our check at the end of the meal which is a huge pretty peeve for me. I would come back but be sure you have the time.

I went back to Fat Ptarmigan, thinking it had been open for awhile (and had time to get the glitches out) and quite a few people I know had positive experiences here. Unfortunately, I ran into exactly the same issues as before. The hostess stand was confused gaggle of teenaged girls. There were three hostesses and I still didn't get "greeted," but merely stood around until acknowledged with a "How many?" I was told there was a wait time of 30 minutes even though there were 3 empty tables that I saw. I'm a veteran of food service, so I do understand reservations and the like, but this felt more like incompetence and guessing than actual wait time. I decided to leave, but for dessert I went next door and got gelato, which was delicious (salted caramel yummm), and the young man at the counter was friendly and efficient.

Stopped by for lunch on a weekday after our cruise to Alaska, and loved the pizza!

Was in Anchorage for a 5 hour layover and got a recommendation from a local that it was a quick and delicious place to stop. Boy were they right! Alaska is known for it's slow service, but our food hopped out speedily. The waitress was nice enough to give us happy hour special pricing even though it was a few minutes after five when we ordered. I split the personal size margarita pizza with my grandma and a side salad. The Caesar salad was good but was definitely not made with Caesar dressing. The margarita pizza had a ripe tomato sauce but did not have chunks of tomato which I really liked. Sometimes the tomato slices can pull all he cheese off. Great beer and wine selection and very affordable during happy hour. It warms you up watching the staff cook in the wood fire oven behind he bar. Great place to grab a quick bite with great food and service :)

Good casual dinner spot in Anchorage; however, sitting at the pizza bar allowed me to get a feel for their subpar ingredients and notice the mediocre service. I tried the bruschetta for an appetizer thinking that a place that specializes in pizza would have some decent tomatoes. I was unimpressed and reminded that I was in Alaska. I guess I should have known better. The balsamic drizzled on top was extremely sweet and syrupy, probably to mask the flavorless tomatoes. I tried two pizzas. Pretty good crust but it was overstretched and unevenly thin toward the middle. The mushroom pizza with added fennel sausage was terrific. The Greek pizza with the lamb was not that good, simply because it was not balanced. I like feta cheese, but not that much! It ended up being too salty, a classic mistake for a slice of Greek-style pizza. The service was mediocre. I noticed that our pizzas were pulled from the wood fire oven and placed on the counter, but it took more than five minutes to run them to our end of the counter. It was a busy Saturday night, but that shouldn't be an excuse for lukewarm pizza. Overall, decent place for a casual evening of to wind up in Anchorage.

I had the classic pie, added bacon. It was cooked perfectly. If you like thin crust, you will love it. If you prefer thick doughy crust, move along. The mozzarella knots are awesome. I also had an arnold palmer and they make it just right. The ingredients seem to be pretty simple and basic stuff, nothing gourmet or over extravagant. The employees and customer service are awesome. The food is expensive, but everything in this town is more expensive than it should be. I came here twice while in town for business. It's like a diamond in the rough. Everything else in this immediate area is either bars full of drunk hippies or souvenir shops full of ulus and shirts with wolves and fish and other nature shit on them. Fat parm has been my salvation here.

I'm giving 5 stars - My wife and I were staying in Anchorage before our cruise ship journey in Alaska. I must say - we travel around the world and this was one of the best pizzas we have ever had!

I had such high hopes for this place! Not to say that I am entirely disappointed but they are def. not going to be a heavy hitter against the "other" pizza joint... Decor is beautiful, I love the high tables, vintage looking lights etc. service was top notch, we tipped the waitress well for that. Food, this is where it gets a little, just kind of disappointing. Appetizer: ricotta bruschetta, we took the advice from someone whose advice I won't ask for again... But it was ok but nothing that would make me think "oh Mmm I want that" Pizza: steak and Stilton, it was tasty. The steak was not overlooked and had just the right amount of ruby. But it was missing some flavor. BTA- it was pretty good as well, actually better than the first. Dessert: Mocha Panna Cotta- FAIL. Entirely way too pudding like. Panna cotta should be custard like. Idk what that was. Blegh. THE BEST PART ABOUT THIS PLACE IS YOU CAN MAKE RESERVATIONS! We may revisit and maybe we can update with better news.

I would say the food was a 3 1/2! Our waitress tonight didn't give her name brought the beer and didn't pour the 2 glasses. What really bothered me was 2 guys sitting at the bar drinking Modello? Beer who apparently worked there, since they went in the kitchen after a few & came back gawking over the pizza cooks! Then went back to the bar to drink again! The manager was on site! Amazing! I will be contacting the manager on this establishment since I don't really think they would appreciate "not the cleanest workers" sitting around drinking & going to the kitchen!

My family and I went last night to use our Groupon and this is somewhere y husband has been wanting to try for awhile and it's not some place we will be returning to any time soon. The food was okay... and for the prices that they charge okay is not good. My meatball sandwich had no flavor and the soup of the day was just meh, The Hot Coppa pizza my husband got was okay, the crust was not crispy and it was cut oddly making eating difficult. We were also seated next to a table full of nothing but kids while their parents sat across the room. To me that makes no sense. Why not seat the parents where we were so they could be near their underage children. Also the noise level is ridiculous, you can barely hear the people at your table if the room is full.

This was our favorite restaurant in Anchorage!!! Amazing pizza, great sandwiches and appetizers, good beer and fantastic service! All at a reasonable price compared to almost every other place in Anchorage. Would highly recommend a stop at this place!!!

  • Steve M.

Meh, wasn't all that. Pizza was good. Had the hot coppa. Pesto salad was good, but a little light. You'd think a $12 salad would be more than 2 would contend with. Not so much. Server was nice enough, but maybe new? Never came back to check. They missed out on 2 more cocktails. Delivers the bill w/no pen. Hey, there are crayons on the table...we asked for a pen. Hope it gets better. Pretty decent spot.

Tried to eat here. It was half empty but maitre d said she didn't want to seat us for 5 minutes to give the waiters a chance to catch up. That's the weirdest thing I have ever heard. We started to wait but after 2 minutes I realized how stupid we were to wait at a half empty restaurant so we walked out.

I have lived in Anchorage for 3 years now and I have always wanted to try this place. And after today I regret that I ever did. Any pizza establishment in Anchorage will inevitably have to compete with Mooses Tooth as the standard for great pizza and this place sadly came up way short in every area. First off, I did not like the general atmosphere in the restaurant, as another reviewer mentioned. I felt very exposed and the seating is definitely uncomfortable. I was surprised that they only offer one size of pizza, as I was dining alone, I had to eat a large pizza by myself... I got half beer cheese and I can't remember the other half (it was utterly forgettable in flavor anyhow) and both pizzas, while not bad, were not worth the $20 price tag that came with it. I had one pizza and one beer and my total came to $26. Talk about overpriced! If I would have known it was that expensive and lackluster I would have stayed home and ordered two large pizzas for the same price from Domino's or driven across town to Moose's Tooth to get some real pizza! All in all, I just felt very uncomfortable inside that restaurant I can't quite put my finger on it besides the aforementioned faults. The feeling was only worse when I got my bill and saw how much money I had lost on this disappointing dining experience. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone and will not be going back. Ever.

This place has promise, I will say that. Service was slow, but I've come to expect that in AK after living here 5 years. We ordered the mozzarella knots...I think $7 was overpriced for 8 tiny little pieces of mozzarella with balsamic vinegar and basil/ tomatoes on it...should have just gotten the caprese salad for the price. I got the chicken orzo soup, it was ok, good flavor, but very little orzo or chicken. We ordered the Mediterranean pizza ( minus onions, I hate onions) and it had great flavor, but they used hummus as the "sauce" which made the crust soggy. I would try other pizzas here, just not this one as I like my crust crispy. I will try again, just a different pizza. As a side note, it was fun to watch the guy tossing pizza dough in the air.... Pretty cool!

Fat Ptarmigan has become my favorite pizza joint in town (and yes, I've had several Moose's Tooth pizzas). Fat Ptarmigan's crust is chewy, yet light, with a good wood-fired char. They have a wide variety of gourmet options. If your palate is limited, you won't get the most out of the pizza, but you'll still like it. Good beer and dessert options make eating at Fat Ptarmigan a complete pleasure.

We were thoroughly impressed with this pizza place! But, just as a heads us, if you go for dinner make sure you make reservations. We sat right away with reservations, but the hostess told us it was a long wait if we would have just walked in. We started off with the spinach dip appetizer. Much different than any spinach dip we have had, but I must say, we thoroughly enjoyed it! We split the custom pizza. My absolute favorite part of this place was the fact they had spicy red sauce which was delicious!!! It would've been 5 stars except it took quite a bit of a time for our food to come out. But it might have been because we are at prime time. I would def go here again!

This place is phenomenal. The service was fast and friendly. The pizza was delicious, the salads were fresh and reasonably priced, and everything was loaded with flavor. Fat Ptarmigan will be a regular stop for us from now on.

It's a solid 3 star joint. I've been twice for lunch and once for dinner. I find the service decent and the quality of the interior really nice. The reason for the 3 stars instead of 4 is that I'm never wowed by the food. I had a couple of the pizzas and found them adequate, but not stellar. I also tried the meatball sandwich and didn't think it had much flavor. My friend liked his gyro, so maybe it's just me. I will say the quality of the crust has increased, so that's something. Nice beer list but all pints are $7 and up, which to me is a little spendy. Would come again if another suggests.

Excellent local flavored! Easy to miss this little gem - just along F Street, between 4th & 5th.

  • Sam S.

I'm a regular and I wasn't happy at all with my pizza today. My spinach artichoke appetizer had no consistency and just fell apart. My pesto chicken was very bland. My skinny chicken was terrible (drop the leaves and give the pizza some spice). As i said I always order these and today everything was bad. 2 stars for your past performance. But if your pizzas don't get better I'm going elsewhere. Note: service was very good.

The menu looks interesting for pizzas, but after choosing the meatball sandwich I wish I would've just ordered one. Pretty skimpy sandwich with a $3 up charge for a super small salad and left hungry.

Came in at around 4 on a Saturday with no reservations. Two of us were seated almost right away at one of the tall two seater tables. The Steak & Stilton was super yummy! Loved the tangy flavor of the cheese with the sweetness of the balsamic vinegar. The steak was cooked perfectly as well, which on a pizza, is pretty amazing. The crust was light in texture with a good amount of charred flavor. The duck half of the pizza was ok, I think the arugula kind of overpowered the flavor of the duck. I like the idea of the egg on top, but it didn't really contribute anything to it. I liked how they cut the pizza into little strips. I never had a cannoli before, so I would say it was good. It was a crunchy shell with a lemon flavored cream/mousse and dusted with powdered sugar. Not too sweet and a perfect ending to the meal. The service was great and so was the atmosphere.

Very tasty! Good variety of choices on the menu. We ordered the Hummus, Mozzarella knots & the meatballs. Meatballs were a hit so we had two orders and two pepperoni pizzas. Not hard to do being that we are a family of 7. My oldest son (12) words "it was amazing!" Overall great experience, enjoyed the customer service from the attentive staff. We'll be back.

Had lunch today, first time here. I ordered the Italian Sausage sandwich and friend ordered the Meatball sandwich, both the bread was under baked and crust in parts partly uncooked. We sent it back after a few bites. Ordinarily, most restaurants of this caliber would have made a new sandwich, but no, I watched as the chef pulled off the half eaten sandwiches onto a spatula and shove them back into the oven, then re plated the half eaten sandwiches. Let's say, this was less than sanitary. My sandwich was skimpy on the cheese, in fact on the one side there wasn't any. The waiter was just OK, could have had a bit more attention. Had to ask for refills of water, something that shouldn't have to happen. He did offer a free Cannoli because the food wasn't right, which was very nice of him. I'll probably give the place a second chance. If management is reading this, here are things that could be improved on. Bake your sandwiches better. Lay the Italian Sausage cut and laid flat on the sandwich with plenty of cheese, which neither happened More attentive Waite staff (they weren't busy, maybe only 3 other tables and several waiters. Use of better sanitary practices by the chef. Better plating presentation.

This was our first time at FP. We enjoyed the novelty of the many pizza options and appreciated the nearly empty (between 5-6 p.m.) dinnertime and excellent, fast service. We ordered a pizza with steak and stilton, because I cannot resist Stilton... The steak was succulent--absolutely a pleasant surprise! We look forward to trying them again. They were a great and easy pre-show stop before the PAC.

I lived in Sicily for 3 years, I know Pizza, and I am telling you that this place does an excellent job with theirs. The pizza did take a little longer than it should, but well worth the wait. I've actually had some really good pizza in the states lately and these places are really doing Italy proud. American style has it's place in my stomach, but eat a pizza at FATs and you can be confident you are on your way to experiencing true Italian style (wood fired being the key here)

First time here! The service was great, and we loved the atmosphere. The Gyro was absolutely delicious, as well as the pizzas that we had. There was a mixup with one of the pizzas, and our server and the owner both were friendly and honest about it, and both apologiZed. Because our pizza was accidentally given to another table, they brought us a fresh one and didn't charge us. Now THAT is customer service that you won't find at another pizza place in town. We will definitely be going back.

I planned a gathering of people to meet and eat here. I booked it based on they always look busy. Our server was pleasant and prompt ordering as well as the food was delivered quickly. The problem was what we ordered was tasteless, the pasta side was bland and my Gyro was dry and tasteless, my husbands sausage and pepperoni sandwich was soggy and tasteless. We did not order pizza because they are only 10" and the price is to high for what you get. I pointed this out to the manager so hopefully they will revisit the preparation of their food and make adjustments to make them tasty. I will eventually try one more time in the future to see if it improves.

This is hands-down the best pizza in Anchorage. Moose's Tooth is a far cry from this Alaska gem. My wife and I go here at least once a week and everything from the service to the environment to the food is amazing. Our best experience: we ordered an olive oil base with fresh mozzarella cheese pizza. It was delicious and one of the best pizzas I have ever eaten. Not 5 minutes later a second pizza arrives. The chef thought it was too burnt (even though it was perfectly delicious) and sent a whole new pizza which was just as perfect and delicious. Bottom line: best pizza in ANC.

My husband and I decided to check out Fat Ptarmigan tonight and we were glad we did. The space has a very "rustic modern minimalist" hipster vibe which is common throughout eateries in the Pacific Northwest. The restaurant was immaculately clean which is impressive considering how busy they were. Fat Ptarmigan reminded me of some places I've been to in Portland, OR. It's nice to see restaurateurs actually bringing some style to Anchorage. We were able to get seated right away. The place was very busy, but not overwhelmed with people. Our server was wonderfully attentive and make some excellent recommendations. We tried the meatball appetizer which came out quickly, piping hot and delicious. Then we ordered the duck pizza and a simple pepperoni pizza (I like a classic!). The pizzas arrived like the meatballs, practically still bubbling from the wood fire oven. I don't know how some folks say they received soggy pizza. Ours was fresh, crisp and wonderful. This crust was actually somewhat delicate, but it was very tasty and was the perfect platform to deliver cheese and toppings into our hungry bellies. They also serve beer and wine with a decent selection of Alaskan beers, although I would have liked to have seen Midnight Sun Brewing in their selection, as well. Overall, the husband and I were pretty darn happy with our experience at Fat Ptarmigan and are already planning what were going to have on our next visit. Muffaletta Sandwich? Mushroom Pizza? Sounds great to us!

Came on a not too busy Monday evening in May but good service and good eats. Nice decor and surroundings. Had a very friendly, knowledgeable waiter and hot, tasty food. Good beer selection also. Meatball appetizer is as reviewed and highly recommended. Pizzas were good all around with perfectly done crust and fresh toppings.

Eaten here twice...don't understand the hype. Bad pizza overpriced beer and slow service. maybe I'll try it again and I'll have better results...but for now...I'm doing a public service and lowering their overall rating.

Enjoyed their Duck Pizza but Muffalatta Sandwich was disappointing. When at a specialty pizza place stick with Pizza. Serves beer and wine only.

Ok so I know a lot of locals and most hold strong to there favorite tooth! I also enjoy the 2 locations that will not be named! But I have to say they have done something amazing here. The location is great downtown and near everything. It's downtown parking witch can be trickery but if you get a spot your safe. The food: DUCK PIZZA!!!!! Cooked to perfection! The taste is amazing, I was trying to eat the hole thing and failed. The duck is so rich with flavor! I have taken the extra home and eaten it reheated..... Amazing! I do recommend eating the area that has egg hot and not take that home. The meatball sandwich was good I wanted the pulled pork but they ran out. It was probably better than I am going to describe but I wanted pork! The meatballs tasted great and the dough was great. Olives on the side was a great garnish. The Restaurant is great all around nice open areas. Huge windows to see the lovely locals walk by. This is definitely a great place for a date before an adventure downtown. I highly recommend checking it out!!

We gave the place a test Jan10. We got the meatballs. They were yum, but not life changing. we ordered the most unusual pizzas on the menu Steak and Stilton & Duck and Leek pizza. Both were good. They appeared the be burnt in places (wood fire method)... but even the areas with blackened crust was so so tasty! I think the crust flavor trumped Moose's Tooth. The steak was AMAZINGLY tender. This one was so rich in flavor it was more like a fancy appetizer supersized! The duck was good... after scarfing down 2 pieces we noticed the egg in the middle hidden under the arugula. Nothing in the flavor hinted egg. Totally weird but super yum tender slices of duck. These are pizzas are for more adventurous people with appreciation for the unorthodox. I was TOO full... but we tried the cannoli too. It was lemon something. Tasted like the holidays wrapped in a thickened ice cream cone. I don't know how I managed to eat 1 more bite... but the light and scrumptious cannoli was easily consumed despite being TOO full. They are doing something right here!! Congrats- we will be back to try more selections :)

The pizza here is some of the best pizza I have had in a long time, usually when I get a pizza the crust is usually not the star but I could eat a whole thing of just the crust here. Good choices for toppings and cheese such as steak and others. I highly recommend this place to all pizza lovers.

By far the best meal we had in Anchorage. It seems that many out of town yelpers add stars to their reviews simply because the restaurant was OK "for Alaska." This restaurant is just good, regardless of where it is. The pizza is New York/Italian style (thin crust, wood fired oven), but has a unique Alaskan flair with offerings such as the reindeer pizza, which was great. Beer selection is decent, with several local options. The tiramisu was very good, but slightly denser than I had expected. The cannoli is filled to order, so the shell was crunchy, and wasn't too sweet. And good espresso!

I've been eating pizza for my entire life, been employed to make it in various countries and am now a pizza-at-home making connoisseur. I dislike the overly cheesy cardboard that passes for popular pizza these days. So when I get the chance to head out to a great artisanal pizza place, I love it. The newly opened Fat Ptarmigan in downtown Anchorage could be tossing wood fire pizza pies anywhere: Seattle, New York, Naples. It's that good. But thankfully it's here. We started with the Bruschetta and quickly moved on to a trio of pies: The most basic, and some say the best, Margherita Pizza (Fresh mozzarella, basil and red sauce. Drizzled with olive oil and fresh sea salt). Most excellent with the house Cab. Mushroom Pizza (Assorted roasted mushrooms, caramelized red onions, cheese blend and white sauce). The roasted mushrooms went very well paired with sweet carmelized onions and just the right amount of delicious cheeses and a not over-powering cream sauce. Do this with whatever seasonal ale they have on tap (and they have a great selection.) Smoked Salmon Pizza (Alaska salmon, leeks, green onions, cheese blend and creamy dill sauce). I wanted it to be great, but it was merely very good. Don't get me wrong, it's a great pie. It may just be my expectations of smoked salmon, as living in the Aleutian islands we are spoiled for some things (Smoked Salmon, Wild Blueberries) and wont for others (great wood fire pizza restaurants). Highly recommended.

First let me say I am sad for the people who have never had truly good "artisanal" pizza and gave this place 4 and 5 stars. I also don't understand all the 4 star reviews that state they were "unimpressed" by the food. Seriously? The atmosphere, attentiveness of the staff and location warrant 3 stars. Also someone with knowledge of the local beer scene is curating a very good draft selection, although pricey at $7/pint. So lets begin with some serious fundamental flaws with this place, the last of which means I will never return to this establishment. First, if you are going to serve a pre-oiled thin crust Napoleon style pizza (which is fine) you must not use flat metal trays to serve on. Ever. The pizza becomes slimy almost immediately. Not sure the owners have ever ordered their own pizza. Speaking of eating the pizza, a real disservice is done cutting it into little band aide size strips instead of just cutting it like pizza. Some slices are all crust and some have none. This basically ruins every bite except the crust. Instead of pizza, picture a giant opened faced ravioli. Second, serving raw, thick, fatty, untrimmed hunks of meat on your most expensive pizza is not trendy nor cool it's just gross. Speaking of gross, if it's an open kitchen it must be kept clean. The salad station is not and the cook staff's uniforms are really dirty. For a pizza resturant, the pizza is not good. Third, it is not cool to fleece your customers. We order a 1/2 margherita ($13) 1/2 steak and Stilton ($23). When I asked the server if it was a mistake that we were charged a full $23 he said no we apply the price of the most expensive pizza. Seriously? If you are a restaurant that does only 1 thing, you really need to do that one thing exceptionally well. Fat Ptarmigan does not. Won't return. Can't recommend.

Excellent atmosphere with good service and drinks. We had the duck pizza and it was ok. One pizza was definitely enough for two of us. Good, fresh ingredients but otherwise nothing special. The artichoke dip was AMAZING and really all I would recommend. My beer was also pretty great; a local one, black something? Superb. -Bottom line: I could be convinced to come back for appetizers and drinks but was unimpressed with the pizza.

Husband and I have gone twice now. Both times we thought the food items were hit or miss - some were good, some not so good. The first time around we had the artichoke spinach dip, Caesar salad, gyro (me), and the duck pizza (him). We were not a fan of the dip, it just lacked flavor. I love Caesar salad and gyros and will always order if either are on the menu. This Caesar salad was just not good. The dressing didn't taste like Caesar dressing and I was disappointed. I didn't order it the second visit. My husband liked his duck pizza. We brought half of it home and my (very picky) stepdaughter really liked it, too. The gyro on the other hand has ruined gyros for me. Not even kidding. I will never again order a gyro if it is the processed, sliced lamb meat. (My other favorite pizza joint has a great gyro and I have not been able to order it since my gyro experience at Fat Ptarmigan). This gyro was very, very good. It had shredded lamb and the bread was very good. You can taste the feta cheese but not a lot of tzatziki sauce. I probably should have requested more of the sauce. I also love that they put caramelized onions on the sandwich instead of fresh. The second trip we ordered the mozzarella knots, bruschetta, gyro (me), and the special pizza, which had pulled pork, BBQ sauce, caramelized onions, and I'm not sure what else (him). The knots were pretty good but just not something I am enough into that I would order them again (only if we take my very picky stepdaughter since she loves cheese, even blue cheese - go figure). The bruschetta was excellent and I will definitely order again. It had slight kick of spice/heat to it, enough of a kick to make me notice but not enough of one to overpower it or make me quit eating (not a fan of spicy food). The gyro did not disappoint and the special pizza was delicious. My husband said the pulled pork was the best he has had. This last time around we ordered dessert, the carrot cake and the cobbler. Neither were ones I would recommend or order for a second time. My husband loves, loves, loves carrot cake and was disappointed - I credit my own superior baking skills to this, I can make a pretty awesome carrot cake. The cobbler was decent but was burnt and the parts that weren't burnt didn't taste like cobbler to me. We will definitely be back. Hopefully this time all of the food items will be good instead of only half.

Exceptional service.... AMAZING food, reasonable pricing. Great specials, welcoming of special orders, friendly and personable staff. Restaurant looks trendy but isn't super high end, nor pretentious, completely kid friendly, foodie friendly but not exclusionary. Just really really great food and service. Oh, and the desserts ate made in-house, and phenomenal. New punch cards for frequent visitors. .. and a new happy hour in the late afternoon. Haven't tried it but i will soon :)

Came in on a Saturday afternoon and ordered a personal wild sausage pizza and the meatball appetizer. Both were outstanding. Service was very nice and this place has a good vibe. I'll be back... ;)

Nice location to combine with a night out downtown. Had reservations for v-day. Tried to be my usual funny self during introductory banter with hostess, think she mistook it as we were rewarded with the worst table in the place (first one in the middle, basically an 8-way intersection of traffic) while there were plenty of other more desirable seats available. Our server was fairly attentive and cool. No problems there. Chef brought out the pizza which I think is a nice touch. The (veggie) pizza was just ok. I was definitely expecting better for the semi-high-end feel of the place and prices thereof. Wasn't bad, but nothing screamed delicious goodness at me, and I love pizza. Wait, I LOVE pizza. I could find delicious goodness in a frozen pizza. As in still-frozen. So my only "ok" description might say something. I'll probably give it another go, and I wouldn't try to talk anybody out of trying this place, but maybe temper expectations.

Great special pizza of brussel sprouts, bacon, and carmelized onion. Wonderful local beer selection at reasonable prices (5.50-7). Good service! Our meal was out quickly, and the ricotta pumpkin cheesecake for dessert was a dream.

Disclaimer: spoil rotten Italian, that is very picky about pizza. With that said. Growing up Italy gave me the opportunity to appreciate thin crust style pizza. My favorite. I haven't had much pizza here in Anchorage... I must be honest, I guess cause I'm so darn picky about it, that everything tends to let me down. This place was highly recommended, and I must say their pizza is very nice! I would definitively come back. The pizza crust is thin, yet crunchy, the way is supposed to be. The ingredients also are very fresh... Fat Ptarmigan was definitively not a let down. If any of my friends would say pizza, I would say the "slightly overweight yet darling Ptarmigan "! I would try some more of their delicious pies! I love to watch the pizza makers throw the pies up in the air!!! No pin allowed... Pins are for novices ehehhe

Went here last night. Great services! We had the meatballs which were amazing. We had the spinach and artichoke dip. Good flavor but I wish it was more chopped up, really big pieces of onion and artichoke. We then had salad which was good, a little weird to have tomato's in cerser salad but luckily I love tomato's. We then had pizza! That was really good. A little too soft in the middle. We had the margarita pizza. I had the hard cider which was enough to share with someone else because it comes in a 22 once bottle. I would come back.

Yummy! Had the mushroom pizza with gluten free crust and it was awesome! The place was clean, modern and everyone in the group enjoyed their food including a meatball sandwich, mozzarella salad and gyro. The waitress was great as well, personable, answered all of our questions and made some recommendations that were a hit.

So I tried the duck pizza the other day and it was fantastic, as expected. The funkiness of the duck meat balanced really well with the rich egg and the bitterness of the arugula. I also appreciated the freshness of the cheese, as it was obvious that I wasn't eating dried rubber. The crust is definitely what makes a pizza, and once again, it did not fail to impress. It's clear that the owners are striving for consistency. We also ordered the spinach artichoke dip again, and the only difference is that the focaccia was thinner, more crisp and better overall. A few more trips and I might be able to say that the restaurant as a whole is on par with Moose's Tooth, but for now I think it's safe to say that Fat Ptarmigan has superior pizzas.

Excellent pizza regardless of whether Anchorage or the continental part of the US. Ate here 4 times to show how challenging it was to find good tasting restaurants in Anchorage but this place stood out. Had a very good mushroom and arugula pizza ( 3 times - chicken sandwich just so so).

I love the menu. I love the vibe. But they just don't quite deliver on flavor. This place is right next to the Egan Center downtown so parking is a PIA but if you are downtown on business or for a show the location is nice. We stopped by in the middle of the afternoon on a workday. So we were one of 3 tables. It took 15 minutes to get anyone to take our order. We had the duck pizza, olive tapenade, and a pulled pork sandwich. While slow, which was likely because of the odd time of day, they servers were all very professional and nice. The tapenade was by far the best thing we ate. It was creamy, which is not how I think of tapenade, but it was yummy and flavorful and came with some fresh flatbread. The sandwich had pulled pork, onions, pickle, goat cheese and was in a pizza pita kind of bread. The bread was perfect. The pork was pretty bland and the whole sandwich needed some salt or sauce or some kind acidity. Even a dipping sauce on the side or something would have made it over the top delicious. As it stood it was pretty "meh". The pizza took forever. The server let us know he thought the first one they fired looked too well done so they remade it. I appreciate that attention to quality so...ok. The pizza had braised duck, caramelized leeks and onions, cheese, sauce, fresh arugula (my favorite) and an egg on top. OMFG sounded so good!. When it finally arrived I found myself salting my pizza. It needed more flavor to make all those incredible ingredients pop. More garlic and salt might be all it needs. So close. Plus 2 minutes after hitting the table the under side of the crust was all soggy and floppy. This is kind of a pizza 101 issue. Our other gripe is that for this whole, rather large, restaurant there are 2 one stall bathrooms for the whole place. That is nuts. I waited 10 minutes at one point and then just decided to hold it. Odd planning oversight for such a slick modern space. I might try this place again because they are close to greatness. Right now they just need to eat more of their own food and work out the little stuff.

Good pizza, however the oil on the tray was overwhelming, borderline gross. Personally, I think the oil is unnecessary, some flour should to the trick & the pizza might not be as soggy as it was. I'll definitely be asking the server next time if they can skip the oil. Not a fan of the cut either, but that was probably because when I lifted a slice, 3/4's of it fell limp from oil overload :( Have I gone back? Yup Will I go back? Yup Pizza is good.

Went on a weekday for a late lunch 1:30. Lovely restaurant. The pizza was excellent. We dined on a mushroom, reindeer sausage, and chicken basil pizzas. However, at $17 for a 12" pizza I thought was steep. Staff was friendly, kept our glasses full.

Fat is what I would be going here every night - awesome pizza and terrific staff! My team mates and I just completed an epic adventure (racing the Iditarod trail on mountain bikes) we went four days with a few hours of sleep eating nuts and chocolate mostly so when we got back to Anchorage we were hungry and thirsty. Fat Pt fit the bill perfectly! Guy the head chef took such great care of us it wasn't even funny. He made a couple off the menu pizzas for our pescatorian team mate and finished us off with cannoli's. Will always make this a stop when I'm up in Anchorage!

Been there twice and both times it was excellent! Good food, good service, pizza was great, meatball appetizer was awesome. To be honest it was a little pricy for pizza but as an occasional stop when downtime it's not too bad. Will definitely go back and recommend to anyone who loves pizza.

Good food, good pizza, good atmosphere. I stopped here based on yelp reviews and was not disappointed. I had the duck pizza and it was adequate. The crust was AMAZING and the duck was good but the pizza was missing . . . something. It needed a little kick or some brightness to bring it into three dimensions. However the execution was flawless, the beer choices were plentiful, and the service was attentive. I would come here again, but I would skip the duck. Maybe the marguerita pizza is calling my name. Fresh mozzarella here I come.

Glad it's finally open! The decor is classy casual and very clean. I love that there is a Steamdot coffee bar inside, though we just had lattes before we came in so we didn't try the coffee here. Mozzarella knots as an appetizer were good. We ordered margherita pizza and chicken pesto pizza. Chicken pesto was fab, the margherita pizza was actually a bit soggy, which was disappointing :( we tried the vanilla and choc gelato, which were very good...though they only had 3 of their listed flavors available. All in all, it was a good experience and we will be back :) thanks!

Great wood fired pizza with interesting flavor combinations. We had the reindeer sausage pizza, which was very tasty! The dough was then perfect chewy consistency of legit NY pizza but definitely had a twist of Alaska. I also had a nice salad that was fresh and homemade dressing.

I am a pizza snob. I make my own pizza in the Naples style and so I am a big f#$%ing critic when it comes to pizza. My comparison is to my own and the top Naples style pizza in the country. All that being said, I think this is my new favorite pizza spot in Anchorage. They do need to work out some kinks but you will enjoy the pizza here. The crust was light and bubbly. Excellent cornichone. Maybe a little heavy on the char on the underside. I think the oven is a little unbalanced. Too hot on the deck and not hot enough above. The pizzaiolos could correct this in a couple of ways. First by cranking up the temp in the oven. Second would be to finish the pies by lifting them into the top of the oven at the end to cook the top in a similar fashion to the bottom. My dinner companion asked the oven temp and we timed some pies. Deck temp was 650F and pies were taking between 3:30 and 4 minutes. Too long for this style of pie. I also suggest using more salt. More in the dough and maybe finishing all the pies with a little fresh grated parm or having that on the table as a condiment. All criticisms aside, I will be back to eat lots of pizza here. About damn time that somebody stepped up to the plate and is taking pizza serious here in Anchorage. We ordered the duck, wild sausage, mushroom, and skinny chicken pies. Hands down the duck and the mushroom were the favorites. Egg yolk makes everything better. The mushroom had the best flavor in my opinion because it was salted correctly. I think the butter in the base was salted butter. I had to come back and add this. I didn't taste the smoke I should have from a true wood fired oven. I think they are using gas as the heat and wood just as a flavoring in the oven. USE MORE WOOD and less gas.

Really nice restaurant. Felt like a idiot wearing a hat and long sleeve but it was a nice lunch place to stop at in downtown. I got a build your own pizza and did steak, eggs, and potatoes. This is me copywriting this pizza because it was amazing. Compliments to the chefs but don't take my idea. Haha. No, but it's a great new mellow but yet elegant place to eat downtown. Staff was great, manager checked in with us and even one of the chefs asked me how I wanted my pizza exactly. For a picky eater, it was nice to get a pizza exactly how I wanted without getting stared down. Will come back.

We ordered the caesar salad and the Hot Coppa pizza for dinner. Everything was delicious and came out in a timely fashion. The crust was nice and thin and had that wood fired taste to it. The sauce had a delicious spicyness to it and it was cooked perfectly. All in all a great spot for pizza. We also indulged in a small cup of the chocolate gelato which might not taste exactly like the real deal from Italy but was still deliciously chocolaty. As far as atmosphere, it's very tastefully decorated and one of my favorites so far in Anchorage. We will be back!

Was very much looking forward to Fat Ptarmigan's opening. A group of three of us arrived at about 5:30 on Sunday night. The place was just about full but we were seated in about 5 minutes. It took a bit of time before the server arrived. The menu is impressive. Pizza options that I've never seen. (Duck, Broccoli Raab, Meatball). We ordered the Meatball, Smoked Salmon and a "Build Your Own" along with the mozzarella knots. They also have salads and 4 types of sandwiches. The mozzarella knots appy is a pile of 6 cheese balls with balsamic vinegar. At $8 it wasn't impressive. The meatball pizza tasted ok but sauce was very light. Smoked salmon tasted fine but again-the ingredients were very sparse. My guess would be 3 Tbls of salmon. The "build your own" came out with a burnt crust. For dessert there are cannolis or gelato. Despite listing 7 flavors of gelato, only 4 were available. We opted for Chocolate and the Cherry. Both were good. I would go back but I'm less excited about it than I was before they opened. I'm hoping maybe early glitches will be worked out. The pizzas are about 10" (?) will easily feed 1 person and range from $12.95-$22.95. As some of the other reviewers noted, the acoustics are bad. It's very difficult to hear people at your own table. The decor is tasteful but the chairs are possibly the world's most uncomfortable I've experienced. Glad that downtown has another option. They didn't knock it out of the park but a solid effort.

I love the pizza - super yummy! The beer and wine selections are also good. I love the vibe, and the service has always been good. The main constructive feedback I have is to improve the appetizers. I found the dips to be rather bland and the other appetizers not that impressive. But again...the pizzas! Awesome:)

For a new restaurant in anchorage I would expect it to be full but it wasn't. We ordered two pizzas, mozzarella knots and spinach dip. The spinach dip was the best out of all. The mozzarella knots are a waste of $7. 4 pieces of fresh mozzarella soaked in balsamic is all it is. One of our pizzas came burnt. The margarita pizza was watery and the cheese slipped right off. The dough was good but could use a little bit more salt. I understand it is a new restaurant but it shouldn't have took more than 20 minutes for our food, especially with all their cooks and less than 7 customers. I'm sure this place will be packed summer time but Ill give it a few months before I come back, maybe then I'll have a better experience.

Not a bad way to spend an evening downtown. The service needs work - waited a long while for the food and the waiter forgot to put in the second appetizer - a very average artichoke dip. The Meatball appetizer was very tasty, lots of marinara. I would get that again. The pizza is meh. I do not like the way they cut it like a flat bread i.e irregular rectangles vs triangles, it makes for too many odd pieces little toppings and burnt crust. Hot Coppa was spicy and had good quality meat. Broccoli Raab was sweet tasting with the carmelized onions. Gelato was also average - icy and not flavorful enough. The prices are reasonable which is why I would come back, but there is definitely room for improvement.

Very clean and modern decor inside. Service was enthusiastic however they were very short-handed. The pizza was very different. I didn't have any expectations going into it, the pizzas have very unique and creative toppings. This may be trivial but the sauce and toppings weren't spread anywhere close to the edges, after it was cut in strips some pieces were only crust. I think they also have some kinks to work out with their wood fire stove. Overall the ambiance was nice and the pizza was not like anyone else's in town. You be the judge if that is the type of pizza you like.

  • Shannon C.

Overall was not bad but was not as good as I hoped. The creamy pesto salad was more like a mayonnaise salad. Not that it was bad but definitely not a creamy pesto as the description indicated. Pizza was not bad, the dough could have used a little more salt. I had the margherita pizza which is made with their fresh homemade mozzarella wish also could have used more salt and been drained more so the pizza would not get too soggy. The gelato was pretty much regular ice cream. Did not have that gelato texture I was hoping for. Overall not bad but I wouldn't go out of my way to find parking to eat there as it is in downtown where parking is not exactly convenient.

Great vibe, great pizza. Service was a little slow but we enjoyed it! Got the steak and stinton pizza and two salads - as far as the steak, we could take it or leave it but the rest of it was delicious. I'd never had balsamic vinegar on pizza but it was delicious!! Felt like a Seattle restaurant instead of an Anchorage one.

The location is great in downtown. As we walked into the restaurant, the left side was full and the right side was empty. No one was in front of us. They took 10 minutes to seat us. So we where seated at the window. The interior of the restaurant is very plain. There was brown paper on the tables and was odd and my friend agreed as well. We didn't get a menu until 2 mins later. Since it was my first time coming here, I heard the duck pizza was good. So I ordered it and my friend ordered the one with like meatball on it. A bit later, people started coming in. So I ordered a glass of wine before they came. And she had to check my I.d. which of course is mandatory. It took over 40mins for our dish. Not only that she never gave me my glass if wine but everyone else who came in later got there drinks. So as I look at my pizza, right in the middle was a uncooked whole egg. As am grabbing a piece, the egg white was not cooked at all, which is not okay to serve. I told the server to take it back and make sure the egg white was fully cooked. She took it back and told me the chef cannot do it, therefore the crust will be brunt. She suggested I ordered another pizza, so I clearly stated the chicken pasta pizza (I believe that's what it's called). After waiting again, she came back with a plain regular cheese pizza. I was very disappointed with her. She didn't give me my wine, she took way to long, and came back with the wrong pizza. And as for my friend who ordered the meatball pizza, it wasn't good at all. It was very soggy. We wanted to get out as soon as possible and when we got our check, she didn't come back for another 15mins. Hands down, I love pizza but this place is a big no for me! The only good dish I can say is the Spinach dip!

Better than Domino's but not what you would expect for a place who advertises to be a high-end pizza restaurant. I came in w/ a party of 10 so there were many Pizzas to try. The first w/ is the easiest to make right but the pizza I see fail the most by an unimpressive Pizza place is the Margherita. Fat Ptarmigan's attempt was just lazy and almost insulting. The Margherita pizzas (ordered 3) had a pool of oil in the middle and was soggy. The worst part about it was the lack of Basil. Basically it looked like they either had 2 Basil leaves and shredded them up or had dry sprinkles to put on top. So the pizza was only a oiled up cheese pizza w/ hardly any basil. Most places will load the Margherita w/ large full basil, garlic, sliced ripe tomatoes. We also had 1 Steak & Stilton Pizza. This was also a fail because it only had a piece of steak topping on every other slice. The Smoked Salmon Pizza tasted more like Kitty Surprise as the salmon tasted more like it was taken from a can than an actual smoked salmon slice. Very fishy tasting unlike most Salmon pizzas who use actual non-canned smoked salmon. We ordered other types as well and all Pizzas suffered from the same issue of having the toppings in the middle diameter that were many inches away from the outside crust. Thus the toppings were only the first few bites and then just a saucy crust. To be fair and why I gave it 2 stars is that the Location is good, they have a nice beer selection. I liked my salad ( Caprese Salad ) and their crust is excellent. They have all the solid foundations they need to be successful if they can just gain some chef ethics and use fresh ingratiates and stop being so greedy with their toppings.

New restaurant, great vibe. looks and feels kind of like the Spenard Roadhouse but the food is way better. most items are cooked in their wood fired stove which adds amazing flavor. the items on the "house favorites" list were exceptional. great job Fat Ptarmigan. Side Note: they could fill the space a little better in the entryway.

Picky pizza eater very satisfied. I always try the marg pizzas where ever I go. This was great. Crispy crust, excellent purist sauce, fresh basil, and the flavor that rivals Grimaldi's. Service was great, and accommodated my req for a small side salad. Short wine list but good none the less and the beer menu looks awesome. Will return if I can.

Beer list and the location are the two best assets to this place. If you're looking for great pizza, sorry, this isn't the place. The menu looks interesting and innovative, with duck and reindeer among the pizza toppings, though don't let the intriguing toppings fool you. Salad is bland and so is the pizza. They both lack a punch of flavor that Moose's Tooth brings to the table time and time again. Sorry, FP, not a winner.

Went to lunch, service was good. Food was below par and I was not very impressed. I ordered the pesto salad...under the bed of salad greens I literally had a crumbled napkin on my plate. The server was horrified and stated that the napkin was in the salad bowl to absorb prior to plating.....but who knows where the napkin came from? Gross.

Hands down, the best pizza in town. High-quality cheese and topppings on an excellent thin, crisp & chewy crust. First time around, taking (and some nights requiring) reservations at a pizza joint seemed odd, but it has its advantages when planning around theatre times (and it beats waiting for an hour at Moose's Tooth any day). Although geared more to adults out on the town, it's welcoming to kids with great pepperoni pizza and crayons for doodling on the paper tablecloths. Solid beer and wine selection with good representation of local options. Service was fast and friendly.

Before I came here for the first time, I read the yelp reviews and enough people didn't seem impressed by the appetizers, so I steered clear. The party I was with, however, ordered the olive tapenade. The pizza/pita crusts that it came with we're a little undercooked and the tapenade was just ok, but the appetizer wasn't overpriced, which didn't leave me with a sensation that it was a rip-off. We ordered the broccoli rabi, duck, and italian style pizza. They were all tasty, especially the duck pizza. I thought the amount of ingredients were fair, and didn't overwhelm - and the crust crisp. I was impressed to find an '07 santa barbara pinot noir on the menu which paired wonderfully with the pizza. I asked the waiter how the caesar dressing was made and although he didn't know he checked for me and rattled off all the key ingredients that I look for. The caesar did not disappoint! proper balance of lemon, garlic and real anchovies. The establishment is loud, so don't expect a cozy, quiet, and romantic atmosphere. The decor finishes are a mix of downtown cool urban blended nicely with pizzeria warmth. I think they pulled it off well and the bathroom was clean and tastefully decorated, too. I hope in the future they add a touch more to the menu and class up the apps. I have been twice now and enjoyed myself both times and the waitstaff did a great job.

If you're here in the winter beware, there is no arctic entry and if you're seated anywhere near, you (and your food) will get continuous blasts of frigid air. The maegherita pizza was good but the crust was just a bit off, kinda doughy, and it quickly got soggy towards the middle.

Pizza was fantastic. Very roomy and family friendly. Paper over the table for the kids (of all ages) to color on. Had no wait at lunch time during Fur Rondy. Beer selection was good and prices we're pretty decent. Only complaint is no changing table for babies in restroom.

Ordered pizza and salads to go. Pizza was very tasty and well crafted! Salads were fresh and the dressings were perfectly balanced. We had the pepperoni, sausage and potato, cheese, and mushroom and onion pizzas. My only negative is the pizzas are a bit small for the price, but are very good. We will return!

Great addition to downtown. Stopped in for a beer and appetizer before Thursday night at the fights. The beer was cold and the food was good.

Since this place FINALLY opened and I previously gave them a sub-par review, I decided to do a better review now that I have actually eaten here. The atmosphere is really nice but the sound system isn't great for music. The steamdot coffee bar is an awesome touch. I didn't get any coffee this time, but one of the better steamdot baristas is working behind the counter so I'm sure it is good. We started with the mozzarella knots for an appetizer. It was small and the presentation wasn't the best but it was delicious. We ordered the pesto chicken pizza and margherita pizza. The chicken pesto pizza was delicious, but the margherita pizza was too oily (almost soggy). For dessert we tried the chocolate and vanilla gelato. Once again, the presentation was off but the flavor easily made up for it. Overall, the pizza and service were ok. The appetizer, gelato and beer selection were great. Next time I come in, I might just skip to dessert and coffee. Next time I come in, I might just have

I ordered the smoked salmon pizza. It would have been really great if the bottom of the crust wasn't burnt. Maybe next time it'll be better.

Went for lunch the other day and had higher expectations but given it just opened ill have to visit again for a more thorough review. I had a margarita which had very good flavor but was fairly limp and somewhat soggy in the center despite requesting a crispier crust from the wood fired oven. Hope they sort that out because there is a lot of potential. I finished with a horrible latte. Definitely not up to SteamDot standards. The server did apologize and said he didnt really know how to make one so this area needs immediate attention before the steamdot reputation is jeopardized. It was that bad! The ambiance is nice and sleek, albeit very noisy when full, and the staff was nice but I have my hopes up they can perfect the crust some more and work out the remaining kinks. Ill be back.

Fair disclosure: I'm a traditionalist and this place is anything but. The crust was decent, the service was okay, and the ambience was nice. But I'm just not up for all those weird combinations. Pizza is pizza and I like it classic.

I swear this place popped up over night.....but regardless, we went in on a friday night and unfortunately we arrived at the same time as everyone else (actually a bit after) as all the tables were full, and a lot had just seated. We were given an option to sit at a table to the right when you walk in but the hostess was honest and said, "when the door opens it does get a gush of cold air, so it is up to you" I hate being cold in restaurants so I decided that we would prefer not to sit there, so she did offer that we could sit at the full service pizza bar. We chose the pizza bar and it was actually really great!! I loved watching them prepare everything, I think I may choose to sit at the pizza bar next time even if there are tables open! First we started with the spinach dip, which is served in a little cast iron skillet and is amazing....the only thing I will say is, some ladies came in and sat at the bar about 10 minutes after us and must have ordered the dip also, and they MUST have got ours because they got theirs within about 5 minutes of sitting down...and we got ours about 10 minutes later. Which to me, was not a big deal, but probably more of a food runner error (since both parties were seated at the bar), but it may be an issue to someone else. Then we ordered three pizzas. The margherita, the hot coppa, and the meatball. They were all really good in my opinion, the crust is delicious, great flavor and great texture. The hot coppa was the mens favorite, and it was very delicious. The meatball was good too (homemade meatballs :) ) and the margherita pizza was yummy. I have had better margherita pizza - the sauce was a slightly lacking, and the cheese tended to fall off easy - but all in all the flavor was there, and I was extremely satisfied when we left. We WILL be going back :):):):):)

This place is always busy so make sure to get a reservation on a weekend. Pizza is good and it took a little to get over the different way they slice it but the variety is good. I would recommend.

My wife and I came up to Anchorage from Kenai to get away and do some Christmas shopping. We were looking for a decent meal without breaking the bank. Well we found it. I had a glass of beer, my wife had some wine. The two of us shared an appetizer, and a pizza and were both stuffed. All for $40. Thank you, we will be returning.

I read all of the reviews and was so excited to make my reservation. I arrived a little early, and was warmly greeted. My table was ready, but my friend wasn't there so I waited at the beer/wine bar. The bartender was super friendly. My beer was local and cold. What more could I want? I had read other reviews regarding the salmon pizza- many people say there isn't much salmon... when I saw the pizza I agreed, but when I tasted it.... super yum. Perfect balance. The crust was AMAZING. The dill sauce complimented the smokey flavor and toned down the saltiness of the salmon. The green onions were still fresh and crunchy... I wish I had a piece in my hand RIGHT NOW. But lets rewind to the caprese salad with house made mozzarella. The cheese was so soft and fresh I was sad I had agreed to share it with a friend. The interior of the restaurant is lovely and I'm so excited for downtown to have another fabulous option. The lighting is perfect, the booths are comfy, the glow of the fire from the open kitchen is cozy. Fat Ptarmigan could easily be in Portland or Seattle. Just like the bar at Ginger- it's a nice little escape from the usual. The only reason I am giving four stars after raving about the food is that there is room for improvement in the area of service. Our server was young and just needs a little coaching and polish. Certainly nothing that will make me hesitate to go there again. I actually can't wait to go back!
