I have been here several times and it has been consistently good. I usually get the chicken quesadilla or tacos. Food is good tasting, filling and inexpensive. Most meals are $5-7. ascetically the place would use some work and they do not have very many tables, but it seems clean and I usually take it to go so its not a big deal for me.

Stopped in for an early lunch...only place open before 11:00. Had a chorizo taco with guacamole and the "queen" beef burrito. Every bite was delicious and all for $7. Tacos are $1.65 each and worth every penny. ..add .35 for guacamole. Also ate some of the complimentary chips and salsa. Fresh tasting food and great low prices will have me returning.

Really authentic Mexican food. Can't beat the taco dinner for 7 bucks. It's the perfect hangover cure!

I tried this place for the first time yesterday, ordered the chile rellenos dinner, chips and salsa and a chicken tostada all to go. Everything was made to order and with good speed. The place smells pretty bad inside and it's pretty run down and dirty. The kitchen is exposed and I caught myself very drawn to their kitchen and how gross it really looked. The chile rellenos, they deep fried and then grilled for 30 seconds or so.... They were really soggy wet and mushy with a spongy layer of egg on the outside. The inside was half full of a low grade cheese and lots of seeds. Chips and salsa were good, 2.60 for this. The chips which they serve if you are eating in the restaurant are placed exposed on a very low rack, just sits 4 inches off the floor.... They were washing the floor and using a thing to make the dirty water drain, it's going to splash all over the chips, just simple. The take out chips were bagged and placed up high, I would not have eaten the floor chips just to avoid ingesting detergent from the wash on the floor. It was nice to see a really cute family having dinner, their kids were happy and they went back to the counter a couple times for additional tacos. Prices are good, the man at the counter was very nice and I'm assuming the owner. I can't give this place less than 4 stars because it's not pretending to be anything other than what it is, a mom and pop style Mexican cantina which serves authentic fare which is to the best ability of the folks who own the place. This is the nature of the beast. Chances are that the health department would cite the place for some minor stuff but it's not going to get you sick, it's not pretentious and the prices are reasonable. I wish the owners a lot of success, perhaps with time they will be able to save up and remodel and the such. Wauconda is a great little town with many interesting places, serves to make the place colorful :). I'll probably try more simple items such as cheese enchiladas in the future.

This is not a place you go to experience an evening out. That being said, when there's hasn't been time to cook dinner, or you just want something quick but don't want the slop they serve at fast food joints, you can't beat Burrito Express.

Love this little spot. Great fresh food. Super fast service. The owner is always very friendly and helpful. It is also an amazing value. Order anything and you get chips and salsa with it.

I absolutely love Burrito Express. I've gone here since back in the mid 90's and I'll always remain a loyal customer. Most people joke around about burrito joints as drunk food, but I love these any time, any day. Best burritos I've ever had, hands down.

I would love to love Burrito Express, but unfortunately, the last time I ate there...Cheese quesadilla with beans and rice, I experienced some....extreme gastric upset. Hours of it.

A nice little spot to stop if you're in the area and want a quick meal. I wouldn't recommend this for a special evening out, but if you're driving by, it is definitely worth stopping. The prices are incredible. I had two fish tacos with beans plus a soda for less than $7. I didn't realize that was still possible anywhere. The fish tacos were very yummy. I like the sauce they use with them. The beans were just right as well. It took a while to get our order, but it's nice to know that everything is made fresh. I was surprised that there was still a crowd at 1:30pm, but I guess that just attests to how much people like this place.

Wish this place was closer to my home in Las Vegas. Would be a regular eat out place. Excellent food and perfect salsas. Go here for the food... The ambiance is wonderful for a little spot... Order at the counter, wait for it at a table. Yum

Good cheap Mexican food. Nachos were huge and great. Tacos on the small size, but the burritos made up for it

A divey fast food Mexican place that has a kitchen open late on weekdays! I came here on a Monday night craving something yummy in my tummy. I ordered the nachos with steak and they were awesome in the cheap, terrible for you way. They even had the fake gooey cheese. Seriously they were exactly what I was craving after drinking.

It was good ..... not great, but good. I finished my burrito, but while eating it, I kept thinking about the giant burritos at El Famous. It's worth a try though, maybe you'll find it better.

I ordered a king steak burrito dinner, and a side order of guacamole. They charged me for guacamole and chips. Albeit, it was still cheap, I made it a point that it was just guac without chips, but they still charged me for it. The guac was okay. The beans and rice with the burrito dinner were really good, but the burrito was actually the most disgusting burrito I've ever had. I'm pretty sure it was 80% expired meat, 20% lettuce tossed with mayonnaise. I almost threw up. I just took the hit because if a simple steak burrito was nasty, chances are that all the burritos are the same. Everyone else enjoyed their food, but whatever. Total mistake.

Great burrito place in Wauconda. The kind of gritty burrito joint I am used to in the city, but out here in the burbs! Steak burrito (king size) is my pick to click, my wife loves the Torta Milanesa. Open til 3am on Fri / Sat. Enough said.

This is my favorite place for burritos and second favorite place for taco's. You can BYOB to the outdoor area, or there's a liquor store right next door. Mosquitoes suck, but, it's a nice little restaurant, cheap food, very very very tasty. Staff is friendly and always gets the orders right. They use real corn tortilla's like a proper taqueria for their tacos. Every different meat I've had has been fantastic. Their guacamole is to die for. The only complaint is that it's a pain to make a left out of their location onto 176, but, that's simply due to it's vicinity to the intersection.

That really hit the spot! I had 3 tacos for just under $6. If this place was close to home I would go there all the time. And they're open later than the other place down the street! The building could use some updating. You need new ceiling tiles for sure, but the tacos were good. The chips and salsa were great. The salsa has a little kick!

Everything is good here! Burritos, tacos, horchata! The langua, carne asada, pork, fish, vegan and non vegan burritos in King and Queen sizes, mind you---delicious. Even down to the side sauces spicy and tomatillo. The service is quick and friendly. Although I prefer to eat at home. Not a fan of the melamine dishes. :)

I'm so torn on this review. I saw the high scores on Yelp and decided to have lunch. The food was pretty good, plenty of variety, and served quickly. The prices are low and the portions are decent. Overall a great find except... The place is filthy though with bugs in the windowsills, water marks in the ceiling, and the kitchen looks cramped with too much going on. When I was there I saw a plate of food sitting on top where all of the cold items were kept. Flies and bugs were all around while I ate and I stared at the neon sign that had attracted many insects for who knows how long. Also, the lettuce was brown. I actually saw it before I ordered and hoped maybe it was just the light...it wasn't. For reference, I know this isn't the Four Seasons and really enjoy other Mexican places like this. I also enjoy gas station hot dogs and a good amount if fast food. All that to say, it was bad! I want this place to clean up because I really would enjoy coming back. Based on my past experience though, if you want to try it than get there fast before a health inspection shuts them down.

Good, fast and cheap food. The king is really big and filling. My kids had the Nacho player and said it was OK.

So far I have to say this is one of my new favorite Mexican restaurant. I love there steak tacos and there guacamole is excellent. I have had the chicken tacos as well and they are good also. My son gets the burrito and has little trouble putting it down. On a scale of 1 to 10 the guacamole is a 9. Much better than Chipotle.

Their guacamole is amazing! I have tried all of their Taco dinners (e.g. steak, Ground Beef & Chicken) but their Chicken tacos are the best.

Great food with fair prices. Beware of quesadilla size, it's a little small unless you get their super quesadilla just as a heads up.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
