We were craving Mexican food and Rose's Lariat just happened to be the top rated restaurant in town. Booyah! The only reason this gets 4 stars is because the seating isn't too comfortable at the counter. That being said, I'm a bigger guy and perhaps most people will not have an issue. The service is friendly at this family owned and operated local favorite. Dad is in the kitchen, where he's preparing generous portions of great Mexican fare the same way he's done it for 42 years. And before that, his Mom was the cook! That's local history and I love that. Our waitress, Danielle, had a great working knowledge of the menu and directed us appropriately. She started us off with some warm nachos and a queso & bean dip. It was a little spicy and terrific. Some locals also pitched in their suggestions. Let me say this...They were all right! The Mexican Long Johns, a corn tortilla filled with beef, beans, and green chili, are very popular. And tasty! So are the chimichangas and the flautas. And if you get it all smothered in their signature green chili then you are in for a treat. A big one! So bring your appetite. For dessert I had a mini strawberry sopapilla. It was just a couple bites of sweetness to top the meal off. And it was great. Danielle recommended an amazing dessert quesadilla but we just didn't have any room. Again. Huge portions. If you find yourself in Rawlins, WY, do your mouth a favor and head over to Rose's Lariat. Tell Danielle that the singing group that was headed to Cheyenne recommended the place. And enjoy!

I was with my friend passing through town. Considering it was a four on yelp I will give them a four. I had the shredded beef burrito, he had the ground beef and bean burrito We Had the chips and salsa, pretty good. Seating is very tight so if you can don't sit next to anybody or you won't be able to eat very comfortably as you elbows will hot them.

Grateful we found this place thru Yelp :-) Service was fast, food was good... Chili was a little salty, that's why the 4 star instead of 5

Have never had better Mexican food, every thing made from scratch. Doesn't look like much from the outside, but once you taste the food and deserts, you will think you've died and gone to heaven. I'd tell you more about what we ate but I'd rather you came to Rawlings Wyoming and tasted this food yourself. We asked three people on the street where the best restaurant in town was, and all three said Roses.

4 stars for the food. Deducted a star because the waitress asked if we wanted chips and salsa, though neglected to tell us they cost $6.75, or about the price of an entree. Annoying.

Found it on yelp, and food was great! Authentic Mexican- as good as anywhere. Service was friendly, knowledgable, and fast, as we wanted to get back on the road quickly! Would chose it again, if hungry while crossing Wyoming!

Delicious cheese enchiladas with red sauce rice and beans. Lovely people. Good energy!

AMAZING food here, served in a funky little space and by a wonderful family. A real hidden gem in a grimy little town. Everything is good, but something about the green chile is otherworldly.

  • Susan H.

Cozy, really yummy, fresh and authentic Mexican food, country style (not Chipotle style). Good prices, good food, not too large a portion for the stop on a long drive. And nice family running it. Go!

On way to Denver from Jackson hole. Awesome Mexican food. Nice people. Good prices. Does not take debit or credit so bring cash.

Friendly service and fantastic food. So glad we found this place. Diamond in the rough.

Best restaurant experience I've had in awhile. Food was amazing! I had a smothered beef & bean burro with chips and salsa on the side. Salsa was warm with cheese on top, wonderful. If you're ever in SW WY, worth going out of your way for.

I was driving from Denver to Salt Lake in December 2013 and found this place on Yelp. I got the fish tacos and my wife got the meat stuffed sopapilla. The tacos were good and the sopapilla was great (and big). The green chili was the kicker. I am going to call and see if I can order some. The place is small and could probably only seat 20 people max. There is not much else at all in the middle of Wyoming and this definitely was a great find in the middle of nothing. If I ever travel through here again I will definitely stop.

Delicious. A great little (very little) place off I-80. Friendly staff and amazing food. If you're lucky the chef will be singing in the kitchen :)

This restaurant is a gem of a find. Our relatives who live in the area highly recommended it and we were not disappointed. It's a small diner with a big menu of authentic Mexican food. I recommend the stuffed sopapilla smothered with green chili (the best green chili I've ever eaten). Everyone in our party of five was very happy with their meals. The combo plates are huge, plan on sharing it if you are not in the position to take it home. It easily feeds two hungry people. This restaurant is very popular with the locals. This was obvious by the number of people who came in and were greeted by name by the staff.

Made my trip to Rose's Lariat once again.... this place NEVER disappoints! Not only is everyone friendly but the food gets better every time! They even opened their new patio! AMAZING!

Seriously, this place sucked big time. The positive reviews must have been written by friends and family. Prices are high , food quality poor! Stale products. No chips and salsa. Facility filthy, staff had a collective IQ of 10. DO NOT EAT HERE ! By the way no credit cards or debit cards. What a disaster. !!!

  • Alden C.

It looks like Bobby is back in the kitchen and the quality of the food is about where it should be. For awhile Bobby was gone through my own visits and being in the grapevine with my parents and when he was gone the quality of the food suffered but with him back it is great, just as long as he is there!

Good food and decent prices. It's definitely one of the better places that Rawlins has to offer although that isn't saying much. That said, it's definitely worth checking this place out if you're in the mood for Mexican. The cheese used for nachos is that gross fake rubbery cheese which is disappointing since the food here isn't dirt cheap. I would go for the enchiladas if I were you. But I'm almost certainly not you.

Stopped here on the strength of previous Yelp reviews. I had the stuffed sopapilla smothered in green chili and my girlfriend had a carnitas taco. Total was $12 and change for basically a cheese and sauce covered soft chicken taco and a regular pork taco. The carnitas was tough and fatty, and while the sopapilla was tasty in a put-enough-cheese-on-anything-and-how-bad-can-it-be way, it wasn't anything to go crazy over, especially for $10. I hate to say it, because people seem to love this place, but we were really unimpressed. Not saying the food was inedible, just not nearly as good as the rave reviews make it out to be. It's definitely more Tex-Mex than authentic Mexican, and yes, we have been to Mexico. It's also kind of pricey. Perhaps, if your only experiences with Mexican food arrive from the Taco Bell drive-through window, you will find this spot amazing. It's certainly better than fast food Mexican. But authentic, amazing Mexican? Sorry.

Excellent, authentic Mexican food. Great little gem in hiding for lunch or dinner. :)

  • Alan H.

We just finished eating lunch here and it was horrible. The chicken soppapia was more beans than chicken. Only about one bite of chicken and filled the rest up with beans. The green chili was really bad. Not a pleasant dining experience.

This is a classic greasy spoon in small-ish town Wyoming that happens to serve tasty and delicious Mexican food. I pigged out on some green chile cheese enchiladas while my fiance sampled the "Mexican Long Johns," which were kind of like rolled tacos crossed with enchiladas crossed with awesomeness. Portions were generous, and the chile had a nice bite to it. Prices aren't super cheap, but we probably could have made two meals of our entrees had we not been traveling between SLC and Denver. Instead, I got really full and took a nap in the car. Life = good.

Rose's Lariat is so good, it is reason enough for anyone to plan a special stop just to try the OUTSTANDING Green Chili! So, way, way, WAY back in the early 1980's-- "Back BEFORE the Future", there was a cool little place in Medford, Oregon, Lolli's La Espaniola. It was Lolli that introduced these sheltered little Scandinavians to the wonder and shear delight of CHILE VERDE! Then one day out of the blue Lollie's was closed forever. Since that day we have SEARCHED high and low for a new Green Chili Mecca. Not even Santa Fe, NM, famous for its green chili could compare. It's been such a sad drought from that time until October 30th, 2010 when we discovered ROSE'S LARIAT, the new Best Place in the World (to us) when it comes to this gastronomical delicacy. I needed to use a bathroom desperately while on a road trip from Portland, OR to Spingfield, MO, Chicago and back. Rawlins was the only civilization for miles on I-80. Needing to update Facebook nearly asmuch as use a bathroom, I hit up McDonalds for its free wifi. LUCKY for me, there was a smelly line for the one stall. I returned to my car searching among Yelpers for a good place to eat. Seeing all those Stars for Rose-- I just had to get there quickly! I arrived 1 minute before closing at 6PM Saturday night. I could tell everyone had a really long day, but still they welcomed me, allowing me to visit the little boys room before ordering. My first choice was going to be some sort of combination plate. My server looked at me a little perplexed, "Are you sure you don't want to try the enchiadas smothered in Green Chili and Cheese???" Of course, that's exactly what I want! In minutes a plate of heaven arrived at my table. This is what I've been waiting for for 20 years! The very best Green Chili I've ever had! Full of flavor, meat drenched in sauce and cheese. Refried beans so good they melted in my mouth. If I had been driving the other direction back to Portland I would have bought a gallon of green chili to take with me, literally. (They sell it by the frozen half gallon to travel well). So the bottom line-- If you are anywhere close to Rawlins, Wyoming, Tuesday through Saturday, and before 6PM, BE SURE TO STOP HERE. This place is just waiting to be discovered by some Food Network or Travel Channel show. OH-- a couple of reality checks you'll want to know about. There is VERY limited seating. I mean ONE ( - 1 - ) 3/4 booth that seats 3, and about 6 spots for counter service. You may want to make it to go if there's a line. Also, bring cash, Rose doesn't like checks or credit cards. They close at 6PM and are closed Sunday and Monday.

Every person I know has their standby that they always order every time they come here. From the stuffed sopapillas to the chile relleno, everything is amazing. The green chile is some of the best you'll ever eat, and you can even buy some for later. Definitely a great place to stop for the best authentic Mexican food in town.

This tiny little place is quietly serving some of the best authentic Mexican food in Wyoming. If you're near Rawlins and have a jones for some really good home-style Mexican food, this is the only place you need to look.

Well....... the service is friendly, and maybe I should give it three stars, but I just can't. The food was awful. I got a veggie burrito, and my boyfriend got the carnitas burrito. This place is super tiny, but that's no big deal. It's diner-style, with the waitress behind the counter. Our food came out SUPER fast, which was very surprising, but after the first bite, you understand why. Yuck..... everything was either under-cooked, or, more likely, has been sitting under a heat lamp for two days. The rice in my burrito was crunchy..... and that's pretty much all that was in it. Rice, and shreds of lettuce, onion, and tomato. I was starving so I dowsed it in they're (homemade?) hotsauce on the counter, which I'd have to say was the most edible thing in that place, and attempted to put it down. I could tell my boyfriend was having the same experience. We ate what we could, and thank golly the prices aren't bad...... He told me once we paid (CASH ONLY) and got outside that the meat was dry and chewy, and everything else was just blah... Heat lamps, Rose? Gross. Perhaps to the locals, this place is the bee's knee's, and to them.... I am sorry. This place is below sub-par, and sanitation-wise, I'm sure the FDA would have a field day. Maybe it used to be glorious, I did read some decent reviews on here.... but whatever once may have been, I assure you, is no more. Maybe run an intervention about heat lamps? Maybe put some of the flavor and love you put into that hotsauce, into the actual food?

Perfect place for a mid stop between Denver to Salt Lake. Wide variety of mexican food priced fairly. They don't accept credit cards so have cash handy.

Rose's Lariat provided one of the best dining experiences ever. My friends and I dropped in on our way home to Texas. Yes, the land where Mexican food reigns. We went to RL on a whim, not expecting it to be anything exciting. Wrong were we. The food and service were outstanding. The decor is very low-key. There is a service window and an abundance of diner-style seating. That is all. They have a few specials everyday, but I went with what I love: bowls of chili. I was satisfied with a bowl of red and green in my belly before hitting the road. The menu is fairly standard, but the offerings are far more delicious than the menu makes them out to be. They are expensive, but they are well worth the price... especially since the entire staff compels you to overeat. As I dug into my red and green, the chef walked up and said, "If you want more... just let me know." Wow; a chef telling me to simply ask for more of his homemade goodness, at no cost. Then, he gives our table a bowl of rice to eat with our meal. The red chili was thick and meaty, and it had a touch of heat. The green chili was a little smoother and provided a bit more flare. Both were delicious, rich, and best of all, filling. What did the server bring us from the chef? 6 huge sopapillas. Thank God for small-town hospitality. Cash only, but every dime is worth it. Definitely a must-eat in Wyoming... no matter where you are coming from.

As I'm writing this I am literally salivating, thinking about a huge plate with two gooey cheese and onion enchiladas, covered in the BEST green chili in Wyoming, topped with lettuce, tomato, onions and sour cream and a side of perfectly prepared Mexican rice. My family has literally been going here while passing through Rawlins for the past 15 or more years. The staff is incredibly friendly, helpful and attentive and give weary travelers generous portions of that famous green chili. I swear its like gold! The only, and I mean ONLY down side of Rose's is the inside is really small; boasting maybe two booths, and the rest of the seating is at a bar. I love it, mostly for its nostalgia but if you don't want to elbow up to a stranger you might not like this. After devouring anything on the menu I can promise you will forget all about that part. Great little place, I hope it's around forever!!!

I would have passed this place by had it not been for the great reviews on Yelp. Once you get past the outside, and the first impression of the 50's counter with mushroom stools, you are going to be in for a treat! I had the pork burrito smothered in a green cheesy sauce, which was on the specials board. It was fantastic. I love vacationing with Yelp, I find the most amazing places, and this is one.

EAT HERE!! I can honestly give this place five stars even thoughi never went inside. Allow me to explain: I pull up 15 minutes after they close on the Friday night before a long weekend. I'm road-weary and hungry and just as I realize the place is closed I lock my keys in the car. At that point things don't look good for our hero. But wait! Who drives by but the owner's daughter, her husband and their two little kids. Despite my objections they stop to render assistance: Hubby helps me break back into my car while daughter runs inside to rustle up some green chilii, tortillas and a drink AND SHE WOULDN'T EVEN LET ME PAY HER FOR IT!!! Remember: Friday night. Long weekend. I look like crap. Her own little kids waiting to go home... Best part? The food was incredible. Go there. Eat a lot, and tip well.

This is my grandma and great aunt's place. Grandma sold her part to open a spot in Denver. Now my aunt's son Bobby is running the whole enchilada. I'm not biased I really really do love it! I live in Denver and only go to visit family on the days the lariat is open and only get there at exactly 11 when it opens. I ALWAYS get the ground beef tacos (just like grandma use to make (literally), red chili bowl (the best you'll ever find), green chili and the strawberry sopapilla to finish. I also call in ahead to order a gallon of both the red and green chili to tide me over till the next visit :) So happy to read these reviews and I'm going to mention them to Bobby and all the ladies (who have been there longer than Bobby!)

Rose's Lariat is a little gem in the middle of the wide open state of Wyoming. It is located in Rawlins. They serve the finest Mexican food anywhere. All the places I eat - I always compare their food to the Lariat. Be prepared to wait in line to get in..... They have two booths for 4 people each and they have 10 -12 stools arranged around a 50's style diner. They serve 500 perople a day - 20 at a time ..... The service is excellent and the cooks are amazingly fast. They will remember you after one visit and ask if you "want the usual" You will get exactly what you ordered on your prevoius visits. Amazing ......... The burrito plate in red or green sauce is not to be missed. They cover the two burritos with sauce that fills the plate, then cover it all in cheese - put it in the oven and melt the cheese over the top of the entire plate ......... one word - OUTSTANDING Their green chili is blazing hot ... Making for a really great place to stop while traveling through Wyoming...........

Incredible chile sauce! My husband I were hungry for lunch on our trip from Portland to Boulder... I looked on Yelp to see if we could find something decent and stumbled upon this little gem... so good, we stopped by on our way back home... and brought home a gallon of the chile! The owner even filled up our cooler with ice for the trip! Definitely recommend the tamales!

I live in San Francisco's hispanic district, and grew up in east San Jose, but the Lariat's smothered green burrito will always have a place in my heart. Maybe I'm nostalgic, but I've never been disappointed by their austere but fabulous food. If you can draw a 20 minute wait in Rawlins, congratulations. You're doing it right.

Best enchilada sauce ever! The place is like a small town cafe but the food is some of the best mexican food, on par with places in Austin that cost a lot more.

This place is *okay*. For the town, it's great. But if you want really good Mexican food, go to Su Casa in Sinclair (5 miles east).

It's good as any Mexican food I ever tasted. I really think I'm in love with this place. My heart palpitates when I smell Rose's Lariat wafting out the winder and onto Cedar Street.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
