Great, Great evening. Took my Wife Connie, my Mother Deon, and her friend Helen for dinner on Friday night. I've been several times and I always leave impressed. The food is served buffet style in about 15 minutes they will feed 3-400 people! Pretty amazing. Food is chuck wagon style old western camp wagon. Very nice feel to the place. Great big ole barn to serve & entertain everyone. I had the Rib eye it was huge & excellent. Lil woman had the chicken ( of course) & the other had the beef. Plenty of food. With a all the fixings for a good ole western style dinner. The western style fiddle, guitar, mandolin, bass were all in great form as usual. Their voices are very good harmony and they do a real good job. Definitely a older type crowd as you can imagine but it's a lot of fun. Definitely recommend this place!!! Bring the whe family, eat a good meal & get entertained what can be better than that??

Great family outing. These guys are true professionals. Ribs are phenomenal, spice cake too. Bring water if you come early, Cokes are $2...no refills. Kids can play out back if the night goes long, our littles made it thru half the night. Hope this gang is around another 40 years.

Reasons To Go: 1. The food is PLENTIFUL!!! I had the ribs and my husband had the rib eye (served medium). Huge portions, couldn't finish them all, AND even if you do...you can go back for 2nds. 2. Efficient. Everyone had their food in 20 min or less. SERIOUSLY. 3. The Show. OK, I'm not a country music fan, but if you appreciate any type of music, JUST GO. Their banjo, fiddling, singing is AMAZING. The picker is so talented! Loved him! AND I think I fell in love with the guy with the base vocals (shhh...don't tell). Tips: 1. Go early!! Like an hour before show time to get the best seats.

You haven't lived until you've heard a cowboy quartet do Billy Jean. It's dinner and a show at the Bar J. Open from May to Sept inWilson, WY. They've been offering up their cowboy grub and cowboy songs for almost 40 years. It's a family affair with everyone pitching in. The food evokes a meal you'd get on the trail. Beef, potatoes, beans, corn bread, cake. Chicken for the birdatarians. Get the ribs, they're the best. Go thru the line again for as much roast beef as you want. No booze. It's family entertainment. They tell you about the meal. No Starbucks. They put the coffee grounds in a boot length sock from Walmart and boil the dickens out of it. Beans, nothing fancy, as cheap as they can get them. They have this down to a science. After the meal, it's show time. An hour of cowboy songs and patter. It's a hoot. Not a bad way to spend the evening when visiting Jackson and the environs.

SImply awesome! Atmosphere, pageantry of the dinner, all great. Food is EXCELLENT! Prices are fantastic! If you don't believe me, try feeding a family at a restaurant for the same amount of money! Gorgeous countryside, the drive is awesome. Absolutely a MUST for visitors and regulars alike.

We wandered in for dinner and the show purely by chance and we are so glad we did! The food was good but the show was so much better than we could have even imagined. These guys were incredibly talented!! The price was really great for everything included. It was truly a great family experience. We'll definitely go back!

It was great! Great atmosphere and the food is as good as I expected. They get you through the food line QUICK! (600 people =15 minutes) the show was fun and it does have some history that is fun to know about. Everyone is very kind and it has the family feel. The only thing is it's on the spendy side, but I'm trying not to look at it for the value ;)

This is by far one of the coolest places I've been to while visiting Wyoming! It's dinner and a show and well worth it! Great for a family night out. The food is good, original western food, and the band is amazing. Great entertainment! I really enjoyed it and would go again for sure :)

A great way to kick off our stay in Jackson. Before hand we got to stroll around and keep busy. Seating was a little cramped at the picnic style tables. The food was decent. Ribs were falling off the bone. Although for really BBQ fans, that means they were overdone. But they were otherwise tasty. My wife had the chicken which seemed a bit processed (not exactly a real chicken breast), although very tender. All other food was good too. Keeping in mind they're feeding 750 people within the matter of 20-30 mins, you can't really expect a gourmet meal. The show is the real attraction here. Really enjoyable even for non-country music fans. A great display of musical talents plus some comedy schtick thrown in. That at least made the show a bit tolerable for our teenage sons. But they definitely weren't into the country music (as rock and roll fans). However there were a few times that I could tell they were impressed by the solo performances. If you're a parent, I'd still say to drag the kids along as you will likely enjoy the show and a couple of hours of suffering by the kids won't kill the vacation.

I've been here three times growing up and look forward to returning in the near future. Keep in mind that they do have a seasonal timeframe where they perform their shows and when they do not. Only spring through early fall. The food is decent (not great). There's plenty of it, and the show is VERY entertaining and fun to take in. It's true that there isn't any alcoholic drinks, but I think it's not the end of the world for some to go an evening without getting plastered. You can always go back to your hotel or favorite bar afterward and if that's too difficult for you to deal with, just don't bother going at all. The kids enjoy it because there's a big open dining hall where they can run around and get out some energy. The food line is surprisingly organized and efficient. I don't know if they still have someone doing it, but when we went there was baking powder biscuits with butter, and honey being cooked in a dutch oven for your enjoyment while you wait in the very long line. There's also souvenir shops for their cd's and your other basic souvenir options. They have been known to sign some autographs afterward and I always have enjoyed that opportunity of chatting with the performers.

A great way to get a feel for country cowboy living. Although dinner prices seem outrageous, you are paying for the total experience. Definitely make a reservation ahead of time, seeming that it is such a popular tourist destination. Food was only decent, but the system to get your food must be applauded. They can serve 700 people in under 20 minutes, and you can get seconds if you're hungry enough! It is a family friendly atmosphere and some great music, although it was painfully staged. All the fake smiling and laughing aside, it is something you won't want to miss here in Jackson.

If you want a good seat, you must come early! Doors open at 5:30pm, and we made the grave error of arriving @ 5:45pm and were seated in the last row. Food is OK; Talent is exceptional. Incredibly affordable and highly recommended. A must-see!

I am getting a real kick from some of the negative comments ... "no beer" ... "Tasteless food" .... "served like cattle" ... "need more compartments in the plates" ... "took hours to get served "(?)... . Here is my response ... the name ..."J Bar Chuck Wagon" says it all. The mission of the J Bar is to give "tourists" a taste of what of would be like to have a Chuck Wagon dinner out "ridin the range" . So if you go there here's what you can expect. First, make reservations. Second, the place seats up to 500 people and a full house is served in 20 to 30 minutes. Here is how they do it. Its buffet style and you do not wait forever for the person in front of you to make up their mind on what they re pickin' . You will go to an entry specific line that serves what you ordered ( i.e. chicken, steak, etc,etc.). As you go down the line, each station gives you an item: meat, potato, veggie, desert, lemon aide, desert etc etc ... and your "compartmentalized " metal plate will be full as you go back to your picnic style table to eat. ( at least your not sitting on the ground or on a tree stump). Servers refill drinks and collect MT plates ( yes, NO booze !, its family style and who would want one of those panzy complainers making a" booze inspired ruckess anyway). The food is more than acceptable and better than some of the local restaurants. Meals depending on what you select run from about $25, $30 or $35 and that includes the show and seconds on food if you handle it. When I was there last (5 29 12), the cowboy entertainers worked the serving line too, so these guys hustle. After everyone is served you can can get seconds if there are leftovers . However, the initial serving is more than one can eat. After dinner the entertainment starts and the cowboy entertainers, who are all accomplished musicians, get rolllin. (any one of them could entertain for an hour with out an intermission, So, picture yourself out on the range with NO TV and enjoy the music. The music is " Cowboy Music" and we are not talkin' "Country Western" either. You will hear some old tunes like " Ghost Riders" and some newer contemporary tunes (maybe by Jack Hanna, as he composes good tunes ) along with that you get some "cowboy humor" for a few good laughs ( this ain't Las Vegas so you wont have to plug the kid's ears ). Go there anticipating waht's been described above and you will have a good time. If your expecting "citified ambiance and booze", J Bar is not for you . There is no charge for parking. Lastly the folks at the J-Bar are personable and accommodating. In closing, I have traveled extensively (nationally and internationally) for more than 50 years. i have seen the good, the bad and the ugly. J Bar is worth the visit but leave the "citified" idiosyncrasies at home and enjoy all that the J-Bar Chuck Wagon has to offer. As for me, I'm headin' back to Jackson Wy and will be saying howdy the the J-Bar folks again.

Well plan on waiting 2 hours before they serve the food. The food is awful.... I hate margarine. No butter. You serve yourself and clean up afterwards, if you like being in a cattle call... You will like this experience. Mow the show is great. It's one half hrs of great cowboy songs and banjo and fiddling. They were great. But don't plan on tasty food. Plan on being herded to food. Crowds you will have to endure. Just don't expect anything but good entertainment. This was our third time in 30 years. But it will be our last

We came up through Jackson on the way to the National Parks. We wanted to do a Western/cowboy themed dinner at a family friendly place for the kids. You are looking for a specific experience when you come here. Its not for the food, which was just blah. Yes it was very touristy, but it was just fun. I think the biggest difference was the entertainment. The Bar J Wranglers are top notch. It's old school style entertainment with jokes and songs that are done really well. They perform classic singing cowboy songs that harken back to Western movies. Maybe not a truly authentic cowboy experience, but one that is nostalgic of the singing cowboy idealized in movies.

    (4)
  • Jon V.

At first I wasn't sure about a cowboy show just because country isn't my kind of music. I was more than pleasantly surprised. The Wranglers were VERY entertaining from both a musical and comedic stand point. Definitely a good family show. My 10 year old son laughed and smiled through almost all of the show. The beef was good. We had good seats and it was an relatively small crowd so I was able to go back through the line again and get a second helping. Tips: Get there early to get the best seats. The paper towels on the tables make good seat holders.

HOLY YEA HAW! Ok - so this place is a little goofy and touristy and well frankly it was super hard to check in because I had such limited service here. We went as a family (76 of us!) and they were totally able to accommodate us all. The guy up front talking was a little schmaltzy but amusing. They gave us instructions on how it was going to work and sure as day it did, we grabbed these HUGE plates and took off with our tickets - I am pretty sure our family had everything and I heard good things about the beef, ribs, and I had the stake which was medium rare but really good. I heard the chicken was meh but you know it looked all right to me my cousin's daughter wouldn't let me have a bite! Then a potato, beans, applesauce (which was legit, I could have used more of that) and a roll and some spice cake. All of the portions were huge! You can go back for seconds (if you could even manage) then there is a little show after - it was cute well what we stayed for with a fussy 3 month old. Then we looked at the prices (my grandpa paid for everyone which he didn't have to do) and for what you got were outstanding!

We had a blast here. Food was OK, entertainment was alot better and the price is right.

Forgettable food, but this city boy really got a kick out of the show!!! Never heard much western music in my lifetime, but the music, family friendly comedy and personalities really made our evenings enjoyable. The food was borderline horrible, but it was explained that it was meant to be a simulation of what a chuckwagon meal would have been like in the late 1800's, so it was an interesting meal. It's all you can eat Roast Beef (tough as heck), Chicken Breast (good), Beans (on the sweet side), Potato (it's a baked potato!), Apple Sauce (from a can i reckon), Spiced cake (nice), corn bread (ok), and lemonade (WATERED way down). Didn't see many people, if any, go for 2nds! Food: 1 1/2 stars Entertainment: 5 STARS Experience: 4 stars OVERALL (with my unique math calculations): 4 1/2 stars!!! The entertainment was the key! This place opens at 6pm and dinner starts at 7pm. Before dinner you can checkout the souvenir shop, walk around the facilities, get some freshly made biscuit with honey (really yummy), get a drink (NO ALCOHOL...it was advised that you could bring your own if needed) or just relax. At 6:45 the cowbell rings and everyone returns to their seats in the barn which has a capacity of 750 (on this day there were about 400 people with several hundred from various tour groups - which we were apart of and a group of 100 or so Texas high schoolers). They explain the procedure of how to get your food in an orderly fashion and by 7:15 everyone is eating! By 7:45 most are done with the food and the Music and Comedy starts. The show didn't end until 9:35. It certainly didn't feel like a run of the mill show, but rather one that they put their hearts and love into!

Pleasantly surprised. Food was okay but the entertainment gets 10 Stars if at all possible. If you are in the Jackson Hole area don't miss an opportunity to see these guys!

  • Tony A.

Wow! This place is fantastic! No - you don't go to these kinds of places for the food but the food was actually pretty good! You go for the experience and the experience is fantastic. The western experience and western feel are well done but the entertainment is the real steal. The 4 guys really put on a first class show and the cost of admission is worth every penny. Great old western tunes mixed with gags galore mixed in with with contemporary stuff. I was skeptical but it all works. You gotta go!

  • Karen S.

I love this supper!! The show the guys put on is hilarious, and the food is great as well. Such a fun family thing to do that is a very unique experience. You have to go at least once!

This was so incredibly fun for a family night. Ranges from about $25-$30 for adults, depending on what you order, and $10 for kids unless they are young enough to sit in your lap. The music was great, the banter was funny and the food was good. Some was pretty salty, but its Chuckwagon food. Really enjoyed our night out and would love to come again in a few years.

I honestly can't stand Country music. But I have to say that an evening with the Bar J Wranglers is great fun for any age. These guys are extremely talented musically and their comedy routine has busted me to tears. I've come to love Western music because of these guys; in fact, I now own several of their CDs. The food is good (I always get the bbqed chicken breast). The meal and entertainment are exceptionally priced. This is an evening not to be missed if visiting Jackson Hole. We've seen them perform nearly a dozen times in the 5 years we've lived here and have never been disappointed. It's a 'family friendly' establishment meaning No Alcohol, which is great by me.

    (5)
  • Vance B.

The food sucks. No other way to put it. The steak was fatty and nearly uncooked. You couldn't cut through it with a scalpel. The chicken was way over salted and had a mushy texture. The corn bread was OK as we're the beans. The entertainment was excellent. (BTW this is not country music. It's western music. There's a difference.) The sound system needs upgrade though. There were times when the sound was a bit muddled. Overall, it's worth the trip.

Wouldn't think of coming to Jackson in the summer without coming here for a great supper and an outstanding cowboy show. Almost went back the next night...Yipee ay oh!

    (5)
  • Joe L.

Go for the entertainment. The food is pretty typical of dutch oven meals I have eaten over the years. The chicken was good. If you think that they are feeding 500-600 people in a 30 minute window, you know that this is more like catering and less like a 5 star restaurant. If you are ever passing through Jackson, this is a must see.

    (5)
  • Van D.

Had a nice evening here. Food was solid and plentiful. You are definitely not going to get gourmet food but for the price I really felt it was solid "cowboy" food. You get a choice of chicken, steak, ribs with beans, applesauce, baked potato, cornbread, and cake for you side items. You sit in a large room with long tables and go outside for the buffet style food (set up is kinda like a "cowboy" luau). Performance also takes place in the large room. Entertainment is a mix of western songs and cheesy comedy routines. Might not be very entertaining for kids but provides western entertainment in a cheesy way which is fine when you are on vacation. Definitely a great deal considering you get food and entertainment for roughly $20-$30 per peson

  • Y K.

Great entertainment, reasonable rates for food + entertainment, tasty, low-maintenance food/service, friendly staff. This place is definitely more than just a dinner, it's really an experience. Good for families and large groups. I like sharing communal tables and the assembly line concept of food such as barbeque. I came here as a part of my evening activities while at a music camp at Harriman state park in Idaho with me teenage peers, and it was such a cool, American thing to do for fourth of July. The dutch-oven baked biscuits while your group waits in line is fun.

  • John J.

Alcohol free cowboy fun. The good: - Good price for dinner and a show! - Tasty ribeye! (it is worth the extra money (30 dollars instead of 20 for the bbq pork, which is not good at all) - Funny show, some seriously good artists and funny jokes (and are all very family friendly). The bad: - NO ALCOHOL HERE! Which means you are stuck for 4 nightly hours on vacation, with lemonade and coffee. Which is nice if you are mormon (of which there were plenty), muslim (none seen) or simply 12 years old (lots of those). However, being a 20-something year old on a trip eating a big steak and listening to country music until 10 p.m., it is almost a deal breaker. Especially since other dinner shows I've visited around the US do offer (at least some) beer and wine. I can see how this place needs to be family friendly, but come on people, this is a vacation+cowboy+country+steak+music adventure on lemonade, where even friggin' disneyland sells beer. - Sitting together might be hard since its all long benches.

    (3)
  • Victoria C.

Wranglers were worth every penny!!! The food was not the greatest, however they are trying to go for the old-timey carb overload feel. I had the BBQ beef, did not care for it. Maybe one of their other choices would have been better. The guys are a real knock out when it comes to the music and yodelling!!!! I would do it again

There were 7 members in our party, ranging from 15 to 81 in age, and we all agreed that we had a great evening at the Bar J Chuckwagon. For the cost of the food plus entertainment, it was money well spent (between $22 and $28 per person). Two in our group chose the rib eye on the menu, three picked the BBQ ribs, and the others had the combo of BBQ beef and chicken. We came to the concensus that the BBQ ribs were the best choice of the lot. They were not quite as good as ribs in Texas, but they were pretty decent. The meal came with a foil wrapped potato, beans, applesauce, a corn biscuit and some sort of a gingerbread cake. For drinks there was the choice of water or lemonade, or you could buy sodas. We brought our own beer and wine but kept it under cover. Bring a seat cushion because the wooden benches get uncomfortable after a while. Be prepared to stand in line to get your food. The distribution is very efficient, but it may be difficult for older adults or younger children to manage their own plates. Grandma didn't get her chicken because she missed that part in the distribution chain. The entertainment was pretty good. The musicians were excellent, although the two sons who run the outfit talked a little too much. The music was old-fashioned cowboy songs and corny country. The jokes were hokey but fun, and our 15 year old got a real kick out of them. Definitely worth taking the entire family to. (just bring your own booze).

One of the most interesting meals I've ever experienced. The food is plentiful and flavorful, and the serve yourself line really adds to the whole experience. The entertainment is by far the best part of the evening! The cowboy singers are hilarious and extremely talented! This is definitely a stop you should make while passing through Jackson!

Our whitewater rafting guide suggested I take the kids here so we tried it out. I would recommend it as one of those "things you should do at least once." The food is pretty good despite the feeding trough style in which you get it. We had the ribs and the bbq combo and we liked pretty much everything. The whole thing is on one hand cheesy/western/touristy and on the other hand it'sstill fun if you come with the right attitude. Imagine "Medieval Times" but "Cowboy style." The music was fun but we thought the jokes/excessive talking was a bit much. Wish they would just play the music and not try to be cowboy comedians. Be ready for the family style seating and beaing forced to engage in awkward conversation with people you may or may not like that are sitting right across from you. Don't get there too early cause you'll just sit for an hour waiting and watching people buy some stupid western souvenirs. Oh, and they're very religious so don't expect any booze for adults. Basically, come with an attitude of glass half full and you'll have a good time and a decent meal with some fun memories. If you come in a snooty big city mood, you'll hate it.

  • Nick D.

This is some of the best food I've ever tasted. Slow cooked in huge kettles over real fires, they serve stews, meats, soups, beans, and crumbles all in a chuck wagon atmosphere. It's not cheesy or tourist-filled, it's just real good food! $12 gets you an all you can eat dinner and glass of beer or wine. Eat inside the tepee or wagon or enjoy the sun's rays on the picnic tables outside!

What an amazing experience-- for an avg price of $30 you get a pretty good BBQ dinner with a fantastic show afterwards. The music is unbelievable-- I was shocked at the level of talent on the stage and may just buy an album or 2 online! Definitely a must-do for tourists in the Jackson Hole area!

I don't know how to write a review for this place that won't make some people never show up and other people make a special trip. The food is decent. The entertainment is talented, musically. The attitude is white, Christian, and judgmental. After the dinner, for which they gave time for prayer and finished with an amen, there was an old times country music/ comedy show. This included a slam against Hillary Clinton and Caitlin Jenner. Both elicited significant cheers from the audience. Most likely, I will never show up at this place again. If I do it will be for the dinner and not the show.

  • Mike K.

We had a lot of fun at Bar-J. The food is good, portions are generous, and the show alone is worth the price of admission. Instructions on making cowboy coffee and the history of the chuckwagon were a bit longwinded, but overall it was a very enjoyable experience. I highly recommend it and will go back the next time we are in Jackson.

    (4)
  • Cherie D.

We really enjoyed the show, the food and the entertainment, but the hour plus wait even after making reservations was horrible in the summer heat. Please assign seats with reservations or at least install fans in the waiting area!!

Looking for "Local Flavor"? This is it! Kick back and relax for an entertaining show with hot BBQ meal and some soulful bluegrass performances from the Bar J family. Is it the absolute best BBQ I've had? No, but it's better than average and most certainly good enough to satiate your appetite. I would not recommend a group of young bucks to come here, regardless of the "fun-for-all-ages" claims. This place is geared for families trying to entertain their children and their grandparents. The environment and staff are extremely positive, which helps spur on conversation with your tablemates. But if you're with your buddies, you'll be more entertained by exploring the outdoors and spending the evening in Teton Village.
