Great tea menu. Friendly staff that you can talk to about the cooking, the town, the decor, etc. The veggie options are so amazing I foolishly wouldn't have thought I would find them in WV. Delicious! I wish I could come back soon.

We took my mother there for an early dinner on a Saturday in late 6/06 and we all *loved* it! The service was terrific & very friendly, the food was delicious (as was the pot of tea), the atmosphere was wonderful and it was truly a memorable experience. (It's also very popular [at least on Saturdays]).

We found this restaurant by accident, wandering along German Street. We were drawn in by the special advertised on the sidewalk: steak or chicken marsala. We decided to step into a wonderland. Not what I would expect a tea room to look like, nor a restaurant. Instead, it was more like dining in someone's home. The salad, the chicken marsala, and the rum cake dessert we all wonderful, the best restaurant meal I have had in a long time. The next time I visit the East coast, I will find a reason to stay the night in Shepherdstown, just so I can eat here again.

This used to be my favorite restaurant in town, but I'm disappointed with its new ownership. My favorite menu item used to be the tea service but it no longer includes tea! It is now costs more for only sweets and savories (which used to be tasty flatbread pizzas and wraps and are now just sandwiches), and you have to order tea separately. Second, the scone recipe changed! While there are more flavors now, the scones are more dense and flat. The devonshire cream and lemon curd that comes with the scones are still very good. Third, I went back again and tried the couscous. Their new 'recipe' does not have any feta or olives (like it used to), included strange vegetables like broccoli instead of the usual cucumbers and tomatoes, and was very dry. Finally, they do not accept coupons from restaurants.com !! Despite advertising on the site, the new owners do not accept the coupons. I was told that the new owners can't figure out how to remove the restaurant from the site options, but they've had months now and no warning to their patrons, which is frustrating. Overall, the tea here is great and its still a unique type of restaurant. However, the newly americanized menu and higher prices merit looking at other places to eat in Shepherdstown.

We were in Sheperdstown for the day to eat dinner at the Bavarian Inn (review on that later), and needed a quick bite to eat around lunchtime, since there was nothing worth stopping for on the way up. A local recommended this place, so we figured it was worth a try. Whoever that local was, I thank her immensely. This place was awesome. It's a small place, but that leads to the charm. It's decorated in an eclectic Middle Eastern style, and the them works well instead of being tacky. Or, maybe it is just tacky, and I have no taste. Either way, I enjoyed it the atmosphere. Even though it was past lunchtime, the place still had some hopping business on a Saturday, and the service more than kept up. Our server was very helpful with both the food and knowledgeable about the teas. She earned a pretty ample tip by putting up with our million questions. As for the food, we mostly hit the specials menu and some of the small plate options. I noticed it was a mix of some Mediterranean inspired dishes along with some other more American dishes mixed in. They also apparently have a full tea time deal, but that's for another day, since I don't really like scones or cucumber sandwiches so much. We a green salad, lamb pita sandwich, pizza, and I believe some hummus. Everything was delicious, and if/when I'm in town again, this is going to be a destination on the food alone. And what's a tea shop review without a mention of the tea? Well, I was saving that for last. Holy crap, this is a huge tea selection, and I didn't even know where to begin. Prices were insanely reasonable, even on some of the more exotic, rare teas that they carry, and they seemed to have selections from just about every tea growing region of the world. Pick a point from Morocco to Indonesia, and they probably have something from there. Many of the teas are fair trade and/or organic, and are clearly marked on the menu. I tasted a couple there, my favorite being a cardamom spiced tea that went down almost like chai, but with a bit more bit. We even bought a couple bags of tea leaves to take home, since they sell all of their teas in bulk, also at reasonable prices. On a final note, if you have a sweet tooth and want a break from tea, get an Italian cream soda. For some reason, you can't find the damn things at all in the DC area, but twice now, I've found a proper Italian cream soda in West Virginia of all places. Thankfully, this one is a lot closer to home than the last place. Seriously, it was like heaven in a glass.

Went for an early dinner with a group of old friends on a Tuesday evening. There were only 2 other occupied tables in the place, so the kitchen should not have been in the weeds. It took us a good hour from ordering to being served. Crazy. They said that the kabobs take longer. Say what?!? Grilled veg on a stick takes a long time? I think not. We had ordered soup which inexplicably showed up on our dinner plates not before dinner as would have been appropriate. The soup was the ONLY redeeming quality about the whole experience, and the only reason I'm rating this a 2 rather than a 1. The rest of the food was adequate at best and dry/oversalty (falafel) at worst. When in She'town, Zazu is a much much superior choice for ethnic food or even China Kitchen.

This restaurant is now reopened under new management. Four of us stopped in this morning for breakfast and found the place to be very cozy and the wait staff very friendly. Our meals included coffee, tea, wonderful chocolate chip scone with clotted cream and lemon curd, cheese and broccoli quiche, western quiche, and some absolutely incredible steel cut oatmeal. We enjoyed everything and plan to return. The tab for the four of us was a little over $40.

Friendly, helpful service, delicious homemade food from fresh ingredients, and a cozy ambiance create a memorable dining experience worth repeating (for us, twice in one day).

Enjoyed a late casual dinner in Shepherdstown. Town has a pleasant ambiance with University population adding a nice accent. Friendly, attentive service from the charming Kiley. Warm atmosphere, eclectic Eastern decor, small, intimate. Belly dancer fixed price dinner combo coming in Sept. I would guess that it's a popular place to be for lunch and tea and just chilling. Super variety of hot and cold teas. Menu emphasizes Eastern-flavored appetizers, entrees and desserts although other "American" dishes available. Food was enjoyable, nicely flavored - I'd give it a B. Lamb shish kabob flavorful, prepared simply. In retrospect, I'd probably order a couple of the appetizers rather than an entree. Overall, a funky, relaxing, small establishment and worthy of a visit.

Went here for dinner. It is much smaller than I expected and I must have come early for dinner since there were only 2 other people there. There was only one waitress and she was friendly. The food was pretty good. It doesnt get 5 stars though just because a couple of the things I wanted to try, they didnt have available.

This place is great! .... assuming of course you have an IQ above 100 and can appreciate a beautiful environment, well-priced delicious food, and great service! Check out the monthly Haflas which feature belly dancing and a prix fixed menu! This is the perfect place to relax by yourself, or with a small group of friends. The restaurant has a lot of interesting magazines, books and games to enjoy! Check out their great selection of country life magazine!

Everything here is excellent, from the food to the staff to the kitschy middle eastern decore. Simple, good, delicious food that lets the ingredients sing. Hands down the best hummus I've ever had. (And the tabbouleh is right up there.) Never had tea service (tho have had many of their teas...all excellent) but it's on my list of must-dos.

Had a light lunch here on Saturday. It was really nice. We sat outside and watched people walk up and down German Street. We shared the hummus platter and tried their tea of the day, both were delicious.

This place is a really confused mix of Asian and Middle Eastern decor. Enya was playing, which made the atmosphere even weirder. The food is a combination of Middle Eastern and Greek food. The food is delicious...I recommend the falafel. The dinner plates are way overpriced, but everything else is reasonable. We were the only people in there, so the food was really fresh, made to order. This place would get five stars with better atmosphere and better prices on dinner plates.

We stopped in here for a quick warm-up while walking around Sheperdstown and were very glad we did. We ordered some tea and what basically amounted to a sampler platter with pastries and fruit and other decidedly unmacho stuff on it. Check your manliness at the door - it's worth it just to get the scones and clotted cream alone. The decor is wild, but cozy. The staff was also great and are very helpful when it comes to picking out teas, and when faced with their selection, you may need help. I'd like to go back and try the actual food and stuff here.

We only came in for tea...but a lovely little place with a great tea menu. Service was friendly and we enjoyed our time there. We will definitely go back when we are in the area again.

What an unexpected treasure. We were hoping to have lunch at another restaurant nearby but it was closed. We ate here instead and it was wonderful. The food was great as was the ambiance. I know I'll want to eat here again. Don't know if I'll ever make it to that other restaurant.

Second visit here was as good as the first. Belgian chocolate tea was amazing. Portobello sandwich and felafel sandwich were great. Good staff and great ambiance.

Cute. Cute. Cute. Shepherdstown is such a charming locale and Shaharazade's is just one of the places that make Shepherdstown the delightful little village that not only locals love but others in the DC Metro come to visit. The tea house is adorned with beautiful tapestries and ornaments that transport you into an Arabian world. I recommend the oolong tea and the three-tiered platter. Lots of yummy little pastries, sandwiches, and quiche for two people. Love coming back to this place when I visit home!

I've been thinking of going to this place for a few months. It has one of the most beautiful interior designs you can ever find. I later figured this place is so famous for their variety of sundaes. I started with soup of the day, which was chicken, tortilla and cream. I never had that combination and it was awesome. For the main course, I got the steak sandwich with couscous. steak was pretty tender and delicious. For dessert, I ordered berry sundae. At first, my server who own's the restaurant too didn't seem so friendly, but later on she came out to be so nice and helpful. Unlike the name, Shahrazade, the menu is not middle-eastern. it leans more toward mediterranean foods, but if you are asking me, it was pretty much american. I ended up paying $31, excluding tip for all those three including their special tea. Overall, it was a great experience and might come back again.

Love it! M and D introduced us to this place. In fact, they introduced us to the whole Shepherdstown area. This place is too cute and we are so glad we visited this lovely town. I love the ambiance at this restaurant, it's almost like I'm sitting at my Aunts house. Very relaxed chill feel. They have a wide variety of teas and desserts. We got a few appetizers, kabobs, etc. Everything was delicious and well prepared. Seasoned perfectly, generous portions, and very fresh. Our tastebuds were happy and we enjoyed the quality time with dear friends. Our server was wonderful. She was helpful and incredibly attentive. We never felt rushed. I appreciate everyone in the kitchen preparing these delicious dishes. Their scones are excellent. It comes out warm and is accompanied with Devonshire Cream, Raspberry Preserves, and Lemon Curd. I could just eat the Devonshire Cream as a dessert alone. Overall, I'm super glad we came here and can't wait to come back!

For a couple who doesn't know much about tea at all, first of all our sever was very patient with us and explained many different options for us. What a fun experience to come here (our first time to West Virginia) and try something new! They have an amazing tea collection that would appeal to anyone's tastes. The atmosphere was authentic and cozy, a perfect setting for a relaxing winter afternoon. And the scones! To DIE for. Wow. They are served with the most delicious lemon curd, raspberry preserves and cream. Their sweet milk scone is delicious and highly recommended! Their prices are very reasonable for what you get. A must see if you are spending a day in the town.

The rainbow rooibos tea was amazing -- order a whole pot! We sampled the three specials: shrimp scampi with linguini, curry chicken with a side of humus, a couple of side salads, and crab quiche with couscous. All items from all three entrees were amazing! I wasn't even that hungry so that makes it all the more amazing that I loved all the food. In addition, I enjoyed the relaxed and casual ambiance and friendly service. All the deserts were good as well, especially the lemon torte.

Very solid three stars, but definitely doesn't warrant more (or less). The staff isn't Middle Eastern, so there's your first warning that this might not be the most authentic food. Perhaps because I live in an area with tons of Indian, Afghan, etc., residents with restaurants, Shaharazade's just isn't up to snuff with that real touch to me. But still -- it's pretty good. The chicken curry is flavorful, but it's just lacking a bit of the boldness I'm used to. The lamb kebabs were easily the best part of the food, juicy, tender and flavorful. The veggies were tiny and overcooked/mushy. The rice was just plain white rice, a little dry, and totally not seasoned the way Middle Eastern rice should be. The felafel was perhaps the biggest disappointment -- super dry, crumbly, lacking enough key spices and kind of burnt around the outside. The hummus was fine, but I'm not convinced it is made in-house ... tasted a lot like the kind you can get at Costco, which isn't bad by any means but also nothing special. I was also really shocked at how small the portion sizes were for the price. I've paid less for a similarly composed meal in the D.C. area many times. It was about $19 for an order (a quite small order) of lamb kebab! I expect more from an independent shop that supposedly specializes in this kind of food, but just about any of the chains (Moby Dick, Roti, Masala Wok, etc.) are better. I've had more authentic Middle Eastern food from a food truck. However, the tea service portion of the restaurant is pretty awesome. One of the most extensive rare tea menus I have seen, and they actually had the one I ordered (genmaicha, toasted rice "popcorn" green tea)! They brew up loose leaf in a big pot (they have pots for various sizes [number of cups], and I got the largest), and they actually steep it the right amount of time and then remove the leaves, unlike most places who leave the tea in indefinitely or too long. I found the tea list and quality to be really great, and honestly I think they should just stick to that instead of trying to be a full-featured restaurant. Decent food, but disappointing if you're really hoping for Middle Eastern cuisine. The interior decor is nice, but I think those who are obsessed with its "quirkiness" just haven't been to many Middle Eastern restaurants. One note I'll make is that this is likely better than anything you'll find in Harper's Ferry and probably equivalent to some of the options in Charles Town. I think Shepherdstown definitely wins the restaurant war across the three neighboring locales, likely because it has to please picky liberal college kids.

Very eclectic little location, and quite, quite lovely. I look forward to returning to the area to try them again. I was in Shepherdstown at a conference at the Clarion, and I snuck away for lunch. Glad I did! This restaurant is situated on the corner of German Street, and parking is metered. 3 quarters buys over an hour, and parking was easy to find. The restaurant itself is a fusion of many things, Middle East Cuisine, Teas, Scones, etc. The staff did not appear to be of Middle Eastern ethnicity, as one reviewer noted, but the service was prompt and attentive, and I was in and out in 45 minutes. I picked a lamb turnover on a pita with yogurt sauce, lettuce, tomato and it came with a couscous with mixed veggies, pine nuts and feta. Very flavorful! I am definitely planning on returning. Look them up!

My ultimate and favorite tea room, evah! I stumbled upon this super tea room of goodness on an awkward first date. While I didn't go on a second date, I found myself wanting to go back because I was hooked on the scones. They were perfection. I went and the tea and scone was just nom nom yummy. I kept finding excuses to go back like, "I need to try their appetizers" or "Just the soup and then I'll go home". And each dish was delicious and the tea always perfect. Finally I stopped making excuses and try to go when I can. The crab soup, the owner told me, was homemade with their secret recipe. I'm so hooked! And their ice cream sundae with the scone?! I devour with silent, radiant joy. The owner, Lisa, is as nice as they come and she has made me a fan of her establishment. And, just so you know, kids are welcome too.

Found this on Yelp as we were riding east on the C&O Canal today...we were starving and this was at the top of the hill in town, so we didn't have to ride DOWN into Shepherdstown any further, thus avoiding an immediate uphill trek after lunch! After we were seated, our waitress gave us all glasses of ice water and took our orders...we all got the peach/apricot unsweetened tea(freshly brewed) and it really hit the spot! She kept our tea and water glasses full... I ordered a cup of cream of crab soup, crabmeat panini sandwich and house salad with blue cheese dressing and it was all fresh and tasty....nearly perfect! The rest of our party ordered the House Green Salad with chicken and fried goat cheese....my wife doesn't like "goat" anything, so she gave the cheese to me and I thought it was out of this world good! Overall, great service, great food and great location....we'll be back!

Before I begin, if you want call the restaurant, the last 4 digits are 8100, not 1000. For some reason Yelp won't update to the new number. The third owner is a charm! We have been faithful customers since the beginning. This newest incarnation is wonderful! We had the traditional tea service of scones, Devonshire cream, lemon curd, and raspberry jam with Monk's Blend tea. We also had a real Maryland cream of crab soup and chicken salad combination that was fresh and scrumptious. The bowl of soup was plentiful, with lumps of crab in every bite. The consistency was just right, not overly thickened as some restaurants do. Don't ask for the recipe. Just come and enjoy it! We also had an iced ginger peach tea that was delicious. Whenever we're in town, we make a special trip to visit Shaharazade's! So glad we met the new owner, too!

2.5 stars. Our food was tasty, but the portion sizes for the price were RIDICULOUSLY small/stingy. I kept ordering MORE food to actually get full than I would otherwise! Waitstaff was kinda slow bringing out food items. Food was relatively well done/tasty, but not really authentic. One of my desserts was done halfassed/missing ingredients. Expected more and got way less. Disappointed.

Costly for what it is. $20 for undersized kabobs. Food was good but not great. Service was good but slow.

God news and bad news. The bad news is this used to be a pretty good place to eat but I think it might be under new management or something because the general quality of everything isn't the same. The good news is this place is still filled with a crazy eclectic décor so it's more like a crazy aunt's living room than a restaurant, filled with furniture she found on the side of the road, which I love. The tea menu is very good and this is one of the best places in the world to be on a cold evening, sipping black Russian tea spiced with lemon. It's one of the simple, uncomplicated good things in life that you always remember when you think about the better moments your life. We had a good laugh over the fruit and cheese platter. It's as if the waiter ran home and emptied his frig of all the extra odds and ends he had but wasn't planning on eating anyway and brought it back to you. I'm fairly certain the cheese was bought at Walmart and I'm okay with that. The service here is just awful, but for some reason it doesn't seem to bother me all that much maybe because it isn't awful in a mean way. It's awful in the sense that your goofy but well-meaning friends got together and opened a restaurant.

  • Dan M.

I wanted to like this place from all of the reviews that I read, but food is just average as best. Maybe I am biased as I lived in the Middle East for 4 years, but the hummus, falafel, tobouleh seemed like they were from pre-made mixes out of the box, and my wife's veggie panini was swimming in balsamic vinegar. Wait staff though was very friendly, and the decor is funky. Tea menu as others have noted is quite extensive.

To say the atmosphere is pleasant is an understatement. When you come here, prepare to settle into one of the tables and be a while. This is not a place to come for fast food and for good reason. We have been several times and each time the food we ordered has not disappointed. You can bring in your favorite beer or wine and they will provide glasses or open it for you. We make it a point to come here anytime we are in town to enjoy a great meal. This is a special place and we hope to enjoy it more in the time to come. Ps we have never actually tried the tea.

Went into Sheperdstown trying to kill some time on a Tuesday. Many businesses are closed on that day so when we found Shaharazades open we decided to try it for a light lunch. Found the choices to be plentiful and really enjoyed the food and atmosphere. Will definitely be back again and i would order exactly the same quiche again.

This is a very pretty place. The menu is small but food is good, with a Middle Eastern flair. Falafel with couscous is nice. Of course, they have an extensive tea menu, with black, white, green, and herbal teas served hot or cold. For a special treat, order the English tea with sandwiches and cakes. The dining room is small and comfortable, with eclectic yes cohesive furnishings. Very girly and frou-frou, as my husband would say - but that's what I love!
