We love Maria's! But don't tell too many of your friends, because it's already a hot spot and we don't want them to run out of fish tacos, chimis, or plantains...at least not until our orders are filled. Always tastes fresh, served with a smile! The staff are awesome, patient with those out towners in from of us that can't decide, and the place always feels clean and cared for. If you're craving it on Saturday, make sure you treat yourself, because they close on Sundays. Glad they give their team a day off!

If you like Chipotle, you'll love Marias! Best fresh tacos and burritos without the corporate branding.

I love this place! So far it's the best part of my brief stay in Shepherdstown. Tried the tacos and Maria Jane burrito - wish I had a few more days to try more. Love that everything can be made vegetarian.

Who doesn't love tacos?! These did not disappoint. I loved the fish tacos- served with cabbage and lime just like I like them. My husband had a burrito topped with queso that was so large he couldn't finish it. My son enjoyed some loaded nachos and we shared some delicious fried plantains- yum! The wide selection of hot sauces added flavor and humor- most had names with references to bums which were both funny and gross: the staff is great and the space is full of light and color. We will return.

We ate here for the first time last night. I had a chicken chimichanga that was beautifully presented and delicious. My husband had a vegetarian burrito along with rice and beans-- also delicious. We finally found a mexican food place here that is up to our standards! Hooray!

Delicious burrito smothered in queso. Not enough seating but I love the colors and art work.

People used to cram themselves into the 5 x 10 ft shop just to get one of Maria's burritos or a mixed pint of rice, beans, and many other fresh local ingredients. Fortunately, the shop's success allowed them to move to a bigger location right across the street (108 E German St) with plenty of seating. Maria and her crew are very down-to-earth and nice! Also, the food is delicious; I highly recommend the fish tacos, and sometimes they have plantains with chipotle aioli which is deliciousssss.

Most people LOVE this place. I think its "ok" I love mexican food, and this just doesnt hit the spot for me. however its always fresh, the service is fantastic and they put real care into what they are doing. i think the food could have more flavor, and i feel like they overcompensate with beans and rice. (which i think is bland) overall, its well priced, fast, and it has a great atmosphere. it just isnt for me.

The new location allows seating!!! Great vibe inside sitting at a table. The food.....got better and it was already great! It's now AWESOME!! Really, the food presentation is like at a 5 star restaurant followed by a great taste. You can't go wrong eating here. There is no wait staff but that is not needed....great service. Limited drinks but a good variety of beer. Enjoy!

Taco Nirvana. Complete bliss. Sigh. Maria's is the bomb digity!!! Fish tacos are Tits McGee!! No lie. If you haven't eaten here yet, you must!! Fresh made deliciousness in every bite. Love, love, love this place!!

Maria's Taqueria is as good as it gets, Shepherdstown's tastiest gem. Tacos, burritos, quesadillas, chips, guac... they have it all and they're making it all fresh. You really can't go wrong here. The food is AMAZING. I'm convinced the tacos are made with magic. They're truly something special (and are a bargain, too)! You can ignore the previous reviews about the small (almost non-existent) dining space. The new restaurant location is accommodating, charming and fun! Maria's colorful restaurant has the same delicious food and friendly service you've grown to love, plus room to enjoy it! Happy Dance!

It was a busy lunch, but everything came quickly. Beautifully plated, such fresh ingredients, and delicious. The employees were happy and helpful. Love it and will definitely go back!

Fish tacos to die for. I'm thrilled to be able to enjoy the style and deliciousness of Maria's new digs right there. Was slightly disappointed that the chalked wall menu was not up to date and the advertised desert was not available after all. But theses guys have the true community spirit. Love em.

Yes, yes, and yes! If you love Mexican and you love food you must try this place. Unique food options in a great little town atmosphere. Super heathy options and good small craft beer choices.

Legitimately the best tacos I've had in my life... and I lived in Texas. I never thought I'd find good Tex-Mex in Jefferson County but I am now addicted to Maria's. I'm just sorry it took me so long to try the place!

A hidden treasure in Shepardstown. Fresh, local ingredients and great service! I was told the ghost pepper quesadillia was awesome with a kick! The chicken in the chimmichanga was so much better than the "authentic" Mexican place down the street! Definitely going back!

  • Art P.

Outstanding food and service at reasonable prices. Where else can you add guacamole to anything for $.50! The ingredients were all fresh and the portions generous. Much better than a Chipotle. What was really super was the incredibly friendly service. Rare to see that at a lot of restaurants these days. We'll be back!

Great food, great service! The cashier was very knowledgeable of everything on the menu and all the sauces. Really nice environment and tasty food. Loved the plantains and Maria's Chimi! A must try.

First off, I am not a hipster so my brain is not hard-wired to love burritos by default, but I do love Mexican food. Maria's is basically a more expensive, blander version of Chipotle. It's okay, I've been eating here intermittently since it opened. Roughly 80% of the time I order extra guac or queso, they forget to put it on (too much mota?). The new location is nice, the fish tacos are pretty good, they have Jarritos, a good selection of hot sauces, and will start serving alcohol soon, but they put tomatoes in the guacamole. The most succinct review I have heard about Maria's is: "Mexican food made by white people."

had lunch there for the first time last week 6/11. my daughter recommended the fish tacos which i love. i was a little hesitant when i saw the were made with fried cod. well they were delicious. the cod was just lightly battered and very good. couldn't have asked for much better(except maybe ahi tuna...but hey). i would rate a 5 star but i don't like to do that with one meal. so next time we might get to a 5 star.

  • John B.

Easily the best fish tacos and stuffed burritos around. The former come with an insanely delicious Jalapeño Aioli sauce, crispy fried Cod, and spicy cabbage. SO good. The latter, especially the "Carnivore" (double meat) burritos, are tasty and huge - I typically take half home for leftovers (they're even better the next day). The new location right down the street is spacious, airy, and light-filled. Nice selection of wine and beer (Southern Tier IPA!). Staff is wonderful. LOVE this place!

I love the new location!!! Same great taste and great beer! Stop by for great atmosphere, food, and drinks

I live in Ohio and every time I visit my in laws I go to this place. It's a tiny place but the food is great. Really friendly staff also! A must stop if your in Shepherdstown WV

I had the pork (carnitas) tacos. They were incredible. Very fresh ingredients and the flavor of the pork was to die for. I definitely recommend checking this place out. My wife got the chicken burrito which was very good as well. Not much room to sit, but that's not important with food that good!

  • Keri M.

I tried Maria's for the first time, after hearing about it from friends. The food was fresh and so delicious, the staff was upbeat and fun and the place has a cool and funky vibe. I was not disappointed and I will definitely be back! If you're in the mood for fresh and yummy Mexican food, get to Maria's right away.

Amazing doesn't even cover this place! The food is fresh and delicious! We tried 3 items off the menu and each one was awesome! Hospitality was off the chain! Maria & Devon were very kind and informative about things to do in town. Absolutely one of the best Dining experiences I've ever had!

  • John B.

Fantastic taqueria! The burritos are so big that you can eat half for lunch and save the rest for dinner. All ingredients are fresh and you basically tell them exactly what you want on your taco/burrito/quesadillas. If you get a stuffed burrito, ask them to put it in an aluminum container so it doesn't drip all over you when you're eating it. (And recycle it afterwards!) Prices are cheap compared to what you get - the stuff served here ain't like the pathetically tiny items you get at Taco Bell, folks. There is very limited seating inside and out but you can walk down the street and find benches in numerous spots or just sit on The Wall (in front of McMurran Hall, with the clock tower) - enjoy your food and do some people-watching in a cool little college town. Friendly staff loves to chat it up with customers and they play great music to boot!

  • Marie M.

Love the new location, very nice upgrade. The food is delicious however, they need to add pinto or refried beans. Very friendly staff and average prices.

Maria's is a very small tacarita in downtown shepherdstown. So small that you still may miss it, even if you know where it is. With it's small size it's better to get your food to go. Everything on the menu is superb. Maria is there herself most days to make your meal. One of my favorite places in Shepherdstown. Not open on Tuesdays which makes taco Tuesday nearly impossible. Other than that no complaints. Maria's rivals "habenero Mexican grill" in martinsburg in every way. Large portions for a small price.

  • Angie D.

Very small inside and really best if you get your food and find a nice spot to eat outside.

  • Haley L.

As a student at Shepherd I visit here frequently. Definitely my favorite place in town! I recommend the Maria Jane (especially if you love cheese). It's a huge portion so you definitely get your money's worth and it's absolutely delicious.

  • Ryland G.

Friendly and tiny while still being cozy, the walls in Maria's Taqueria are lined with past specials and menu ideas from other customers. Basically, they have all of the ingredients you would expect to go into simple mexican cooking, freshly prepared. They will put these together in any combination you might want, from tacos to burritos to quesadillas, to just the simple food-service worker/college student favorite of putting them into those plastic pints you get from to-go places. They also offer a wide variety of hot sauces to try, and you can take the edge off with sodas, gatorade, milk, and water. Not only was the food good and the price right, but while I sat there eating (and then digesting/resting/almost napping) I got to know the staff and a good cross-section of the town. Listening to Maria greet everyone who came in and share friendly gossip and a friendly attitude really made me feel at home and I can't wait to go back!

Good Taquerias are a rarity in the panhandle but i can honestly say Maria's has got it right. After my favorite spot closed in Martinsburg a couple years ago, i was at a loss as to where i would satisfy my thirst for authentic Mexican tacos. In steps Maria's Taqueria with there fresh authentic ingredients sure to make any traditionalist cross the border.

  • D L.

Good, simple, fresh food. Pretty much takeout only. Staff always very nice and patient. Willing to modify orders or pretty much make anything you ask for as long as they have the ingredients. A solid step up from Chipotle and other similar chain restaurants.

  • Kimberly B.

Parking is a bit of a hassle and not a lot of seating inside. However, don't let that deter you. Absolutely delicious food! Great portion sizes and great bang for your buck. I had a taco salad. Will go back.

I have been wanting to try this place after becoming a fan on FB and my boyfriend and I were in Shepherdstown so we decided to give it a try. Glad we went when we did because there were five people already eating and there was no more seating! Luckily when we ordered one of the parties left so we could sit. It is a REAL big shame their is such limited seating because that will unfortunately keep us away more then I would like. Now for the food. Luckily one of the customers pointed out their "customers wall". You can submit a menu item and if it is ordered the most in that month it is added to the "customer special wall". So I ordered Chelseas special... I can not remember exactly the name of it but she had my name so i HAD to order it! It was in a plastic container filled with rice, chicken, queso and tortilla chips topped with sour cream. It was delicious, I just wish it had tomatoes in it but I am sure if i ask next time they would do it. My boyfriend had just a soft taco and although it does not seem like your usual authentic mexican restaurant it was very good. Ingredients seemed fresh which was amazing since I think after tomorrow they are closed for 2 weeks! Staff was friendly and I would def recommend this place to anyone. Hopefully someday somehow they would be able to expand and put some more tables in. With that said I am sure most of their customers are students who are a quick walk home and not have a 20 min drive like us or we would do take out.

The best little burritto-taco place you will find in miles and miles. Get a burritto with pico, guac and sour cream...delish! The staff is friendly and helpful. Your hunger will be satisfied and tummy will be happy!

Everything is fresh and delicious! Vegetarian and Vegan friendly and overall a great choice when you're hungry. I recommend getting guacamole and queso on anything you order. If you don't see something on the menu that sparks your interest, you can always check out the customer menu or create something of your own! The food is great, but the shop is small. If you can't find a seat inside there's always the option of eating on "The Wall" in front of McMuran Hall.

This place is so tiny I could fit it in my pocket! That said, they serve up a mean selection of tacos and other Tex-Mex goodies. Very solid food for take-out. Friendly service.

I love Maria's and I love Maria! The Food: Pretty amazing! ALWAYS fresh and always delicious. The Maria Jane (Burrito covered in a signature Queso sauce topped with pico and sour cream) is a personal favorite. The Staff: What can I say? I love the owner ;) (Not just because I'm good friends with her or anything). The staff is great though, very helpful and nice. They are definitely the type of people you can strike up a conversation with. Maybe a little less formal and candid than you might be used to, but the whole place has a very chill vibe. The Place: Too small, good luck trying to get a seat in here during the lunch or dinner rush but come on a non-peak hour and you have front row seats and great conversation as well! I've had Burritos from all around the country and Maria's will still have a spot in my heart. If you're up for a challenge try the "Brunitoria Jane" Created by myself and the owner to test the strength and will power of those who dare. Finish it in 20 minutes and the meal is free, fail to do so and pay the $20 price tag. Good luck!

Had the chicken quesadilla, it was very tasty and the chicken had really good flavor. This was my first time here, next time I will have the pico de gallo put inside the quesadilla, its that good, although I think I'm going for a burrito next time :) All in all a great place for some tex-mex fare and a really friendly staff! If you find yourself on West German St. in Shepherdstown, pop in and see Maira, you won't regret it!

Good food = around 7$ Good price = I can come out stuffed with a 10 spot Great Staff = Smiles and plenty of "shooting the shit" when its slow Delicious Mexican inspired food in a land where Taco Bell is the closest thing to "authentic" = PRICELESS! Although I relocated to TX, where there are taquerias, pupuserias and Mexican themed roach coaches at every corner, I still miss this place. P.S. Gotta love the hot sauce wall!

THIS PLACE IS ADDICTING. I love Maria and her food, everything about the taqueria is wonderful. If you seek spice, it's there. If you seek the opportunity of fame, the chalkboard is there and if you get enough votes, your ideas permanently become part of the menu. Yes the food can be messy, a little soggy, so what? That just means it's drenched with flavor.. not dry and insipid. The ingredients are fresh, not some processed poison you'd find in taco bell. Unlike some other so called "mexican" food, Maria's food is not followed by gas cramps, regret, and a long painful sit on the john, but only followed with happiness, contentment, and the enviable aroma of having a satisfied belly. The only other downside is that she has not been able to relocate to a larger location to accommodate more people, but I know that she is planning on finding a bigger place, it's just a matter of finding the right one. while I was attending Shepherd U, I would literally eat here (and nowhere else unless she was closed) everyday, and occasionally buy food again before I drove home so my family could enjoy her food, because why should I be the only one to know of this goodness.. that's just selfish. unfortunately I don't live close by anymore to continue going everyday, but everytime I'm back home I always get my fix. so anyone who loves mexican food should come here. and anyone who values personal, friendly service is sure to love this place

Had soft chicken tacos - they were tasty but really, really messy. There was probably a half inch of liquid in the bottom of the container. Moist is one thing, this was kind of silly. Friendly place though, despite being tiny. I might try it again but will order the burrito, and ask for a spoon... And maybe a straw...

Love this place. Staff is amazingly open and nice; food is fresh and good, service fast. I only wish there was a small table for two or two of them that you could squeeze into and hang for a bit (besides the little bar against the wall).

I am from the west coast so have been missing Mexican food ever since I moved to the area. I tried Marias Taqueria in a point of desperation one day. If you are craving mexican food - it will do the job. I have had their burritos which are huge, but tasty. The tacos are tasting too, but get VERY soggy. Don't expect authentic mexican food. The meat is all good, slow roasted - the are often out of at least one on any given day. It is tiny, but has charm as does everything in Shepherdstown. Staff is very friendly...except the owner. She acts like she owns the place :)

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
