Overpriced, not authentic Cajun food. Ordered a blackened chicken breast PoBoy. Chicken was seared but no spices and the chicken was cold, not tasty at all. My wife had the blackened shrimp salad which came with five small shrimp, again not spicy, but a least temperature hot. Waitress tried to charge us for drinks that we did not have. She did give me 50% off my cold chicken sandwich which originally came loaded with mayonnaise even though I requested none. No attempt to make the sandwich right. For the reviews given and prices charged expected a decent meal. So so at best.

A hole in the wall, but in a very good, authentic sort of way with this Cajun-hipster vibe going on--a nice change of pace from dining at cookie-cutter TGIFridays clone restaurants. Older building in downtown Fayetteville, but it's very clean. Generous portions and very friendly staff. I ordered one of the platters and between that and the jambalaya, I stuffed myself--I really loved the fried oysters. My only quibble is, that you could tell the crawfish were previously frozen, they seemed to be a little on the chewy side. That's just it though, a quibble (after all, where are you going to find fresh crawfish in WV??) It won't keep me from coming back though, because everything else about my experience was excellent. A good place to go to relax, take your time and savor a meal with friends, but it's probably a good idea to call ahead and see if they have room if your group is large, because the dining room is small and intimate.

My husband and I wanted a quick getaway weekend to recover from our insanely fun wedding in Pittsburgh. We randomly chose a place with a state park and didn't care what was nearby. We just wanted to sleep and relax. Who knew we would have stumbled upon the best low country boil we have ever had? My husband grew up in the south and we have spent a lot of time around there. We have eaten our fair share of coastal seafood. We have no idea how this place is tucked away in the mountains of West Virginia and manages to blow the socks off of places we have eaten at in Louisiana. We would build a vacation again around coming to this area just so we could eat here.

A good place to eat when passing through or while in the area enjoying the great outdoors. It seems odd--Cajun food in the middle of coal country. But whomever developed the recipes and picks the ingredients knows what they are doing. I had the Creole, which was very tasty. The rice was a bit undercooked, but the seafood was really fresh and the sauce was excellent. (It would be better with some cornbread.) Came back for pecan pie, and that was good as well.

The black and bleu po boy was awesome! Extensive menu. The burgers are huge. Can't go wrong with fried okra. Get you some!

The food was fantastic and the new location is nice. If you want medium-rare for a burger, you might want to order rare, as my burger was pretty well-done. Besides that, very tasty food and the service was fantastic. We will be back!

What a cute little spot! Kudos to Gumbo's for bringing authentic Cajun food to a small town in West Virginia! The decor inside is a bit jumbled and it was slow when we stopped in for dinner on a Tuesday night, but what can you expect? The menu was extensive, with many options that could fit any budget. My mother got the crawfish & shrimp steam pot (which we initially thought was pricey), but the portion was massive! It could easily be split among a few people. My veggie burger was nothing special, but the homemade chips were fantastic. My father and brother's burgers were good as well. Definitely worth a visit if you're passing through!

This is my first time here, and as someone who's from New Orleans (we came to WV To watch the saints practice, then drove here to go rafting), I don't really know what to expect because I've been to a lot if "cajun" places. My dad and I are eating here with hopeful excitement. The place is really old- it could use renovations. Like the bathrooms, if you were taller than 5'8" then you would have to duck in order to do your business. They okay authentic NOLA style music (zydeco+jazz) The paintings on the wall depicts stereotypical NOLA: jazz players, oysters, the bayou, Etc. But it sure doesn't deter the locals/rafters, because a lot of people are filtering in and out. I ordered the jambalaya soup(6$) and a side of red beans and rice(2.50) because everyone said it's awesome here. My dad got the oyster po-boy (7$) and a side of sweet potato fries (3$). We also got an app of fries okra (5.50$). You could order 23$ "platters" that seemed like a good deal- it comes with 2 sides and you could choose between seafood, chicken, andouille sausage, and vegetarian stuff. They are vegetarian and gluten-free friendly, which I'm really happy and surprised to see.(you can substitute portobello mushrooms, tofu burgers, and organic grass fed beef with their burgers, for example) The okra was okra- the remoulade sauce is reaaaalllllyyyy good though. We requested the Cajun tomato and mustard sauces as well- the mustard is grainy and delicious, the tomato reminds me of sweet and sour sauce. (Random note- We were pleased to see they have tobasco hot sauce on the table, because in NOLA they actually do that) My jambalaya soup was AMAZING. It was chock full of veggies and meat. The tomato base was a bit salty, but that's how I like it (: Ok. So the red beans and rice. My dad told me that it isn't legit- they used pinto beans instead of the original beans- kidney beans. Don't get me wrong, it was still good, but they weren't really "red beans and rice". Just a little disappointing. The fried oysters were excellent, but it was a good sandwich-not a po boy. It can be forgiven though because actual po boys are made with crispy, toasted French baguettes and they are hard to come by anywhere but in NOLA. Still, it was really good overall The dessert menu looked great, but unfortunately we did not get any because we were stuffed. Overall, for a Cajun restaurant In WV, I'm impressed. It was good food with big portions and a nice atmosphere. The waitstaff was really nice (we had Ashley- she was really nice and has worked here for 7 years!). We would definitely come back!

Holy moly. This place has great food. The reds beans and rice were terrific. I love the music they play and the galactic posters on the wall. I got the shrimp platter. The dirty rice was perfect and the shrimp were big and grilled just right. My only quip was the dry run they put on it. I wish it was cooked in it rather than put on top. I'm glad I stopped in!! Go here

On 6/23/15 Gumbos is closed with a sign that it will be opening in a new location soon.

It takes effort to pull off a seafood place in the hills of WV, but they do it. Really nice homey atmosphere, good beer and wine selection, and always great weekend specials. Pay special attention to their soups and bisque. For three or four people, you can order large steam pots with scallops, shrimp, sausage, corn, potatoes, crawfish, etc.

We stopped in after bridge day last year and shared a hot pot. Lots of crayfish and shrimp. It was delicious and a good value for the amount of food, it was plenty for both of us. Service was great even though the place was completely packed to the brim.

Everything was delicious tonight! We tried Gumbos shortly after moving to the area several ears ago, and, well, we didn't love it. Apparently, ownership has changed. Tonight was exceptional! I loved every bite- from the screaming shrooms to the last bite of the molten cake. Julie, our server, was attentive and personable. Everything was so en pointe I left with a t-shirt and can't wait until we go back!

Gumbo's was not very impressive to me. They could use some live entertainment to justify their prices. We didn't even finish our meal because it tasted bad.

Very tasty food. We came with a larger party (6 people) and service was a little slow. But everyone in our party was very satisfied with the quality of the food.

Really good food was overshadowed by really slow service. I mentioned a couple of time to her that I was starving and she took her time even bringing a salad to start. I had the jambalaya, it was really good. I wish I lived closer so I could go back, just not when I'm really hungry :0

Please don't judge this book by its cover! The first time I walk into Gumbos I actually turned around and left because the place is a bit of a hole in the wall. But after trying their food, I'm a believer. I love New Orleans style cooking, and Gumbos is an amazing outpost of this style of cuisine in the mountains of West Virginia. All of their Cajun dishes taste authentic and their seafood is amazingly fresh, far fresher than anything else that I've ever had in the state of West Virginia. Their red beans and rice are phenomenal, I would put them up against any New Orleans restaurant. Their gumbo and jambalaya are also amazingly authentic. They even have a muffaletta sandwich for lunch that tastes just like the ones you would get in the Big Easy. And speaking of sandwiches, this is a great place to go if you like big juicy great tasting hamburgers. I especially like the Latin Quarter, with brie cheese and caramelized onions. As for dessert, if the brownie sundae is on the menu board, get it. Best. Desert. Ever. The service you receive will vary by server, but most of the waitstaff are very good. But with food this good, I can suffer a little less service! The prices might look a little steep, but you get massive quantities of great food. It is a bargain.

Food was great! Every table was filled but the waitstaff kept busy keeping everyone happy. Service was just a bit slow but given the volume of guests and all the food made to order I understand. We had a wonderful time.

Wow. Just wow. My first impression of Cajun food and we were in the middle of West Virginia- how can it get any better than this place is what I'd like to know. My friend and I waited roughly 10 minutes for a table in the cozy dining room area (we wandered across the street to check out "The Hobbit Hole"). We had just gone White Water Rafting earlier in the day and were ready to throw down some serious chow. We got the Shrimp app and the Combo Hot Pot- a staggering $50 for that pot and I don't know how we managed to conquer it all. Holy-moley. Shrimp, crawfish, king crab legs, corn, potatoes- in a pot bigger than my head. Oh yes. We demolished it, much to the accolades of our neighboring table of worthy gentlemen. The service was pleasant, and they even let us charge our phones in their wall outlets. I don't remember much of anything else, honestly. The seafood put me in such a daze that I barely remember my own name. Who am I? I'm hungry.

Hah... what can I say about this place. 3.5 stars, round up for excellent service. Who would of think you can find Cajun food in the middle of West Virginia. They have large portion, instead of the appetizer size, you can get the side order size of sweet potato fries, fried green beans, or fried okra. You will get stuffed on that. Crabcake is moist, not very big in portion. The shrimp and grits is one of the best dish we ordered. Creamy grit top with yummy jumbo shrimps. The Gumbo on the other hand are little disappointing, too starchy, and not enough spices. Their steam pot are tasty, very simple, but hit the spot. Have a few local beer on tap, and good selections on soda and other drinks. It is not a cheap place, but the portion are big enough that you can share a side and entree. Oh.. last but not least, the decor is casual, but very clean and pleasant. Did I mentioned that service was excellent?!

I had the specialty hamburger that costs a little extra but smothered in the barbecue sauce and coleslaw I was in hamburger heaven. The service was fabulous as well.

Visited shortly after opening under new management. Very cozy feel, simple menu with some cajun classics. Andouille Po'boy and muffuletta both are great sandwich choices. Red beans and rice are spot on...certainly worth a visit while in Fayetteville.

I've had almost everything on the menu and everything is so delicious! The waitstaff is amazing and that's saying something in a tourist town. Whether you are coming in for a sandwich, one of their legendary burgers, or going all out with some out of this world Cajun dishes or steam pots, you can't go wrong. You owe it to yourself to feast like royalty!

Out of this world! So unique and refreshing to find an outstanding cajun restaurant in this area of the country. I had blackened catfish on gumbo, and it tasted just like every dish I had down in New Orleans. The dessert menu was stellar as well.

Great little spot to grab a bite to eat. Best crab cakes I have ever had. The shrimp jambalaya was amazing. The burgers are great to with a nice tangy sauce.

Stayed in Fayetteville over night and was so sick of all the fast and chain restaurant we had been eating - determined to try some local restaurant we searched our GPS. Gumbo: 2 big shrimps, too much broth, flavorful but too salty for my taste (though my husband thought it was just a little salty). I squeezed in some of the lemon that came with our lemonade to balance out the sodium. Crab Cakes Po-Boy: I love the person that made this sandwich... just the right amount of sauce to taste the flavor but not wrenching wet that the sauce drip everywhere. Crab cake not so much but I do taste the lump meat. Perfect amount of onion and lettuce for freshness. Shrimp and Grits: I never had grits before so can't compare but loved what I had. Service was great, informative when we ask about the menu and pleasantly nice with accommodation to my toddler. The restaurant got busy when we finished so it took us sometime asking for a check toward the end.

It's been over 8 months since my last review of Gumbo's and I do have to give them an extra star. The food quality remains really high, and some of my minor complaints have been addressed. The specials over the last couple of months have been to die for, and are well worth it. Overall Gumbo's has impressed me a bit more and deserve a little higher rating than I originally gave them.

The gumbo here is much better than most gumbos. The oysters in the gumbo is the best part. They tasted extremely fresh and not at all overcooked like in some gumbos. The Gumbo came with the salad with honey mustard dressing on it and it was great! I I came here with 2 of my buddies and my friends said their food was "meh" so I took off 1 star off for them. One of them had a burger and the other had the Jambalaya. They said they have some local brew of Kölsch Beer and the beer was also pretty average. They were not penalized for the mediocre beer because they didn't make that. It cost us about $25 a person.

Great selection of yummy Cajun food, we loved the fried green tomatoes with crab, shrimp and crawfish boil and Cajun fries. Wonderful homemade desserts. Great, friendly service and nice relaxed atmosphere with New Orleans jazz music

Under its old management, this place was an authentic cajun joint. I looked forward to visiting each summer when I took a rafting trip. Now, it's a shadow of its former self. Dishes lack soul and spice. It's just OK.

Nicely blackened chicken; excellent hard/crusty bread+butter; amazing red beans and rice (my husband ordered a sausage dish, that came over red beans and rice, and I just got to try the red beans and rice). Large portions, great food, amid a quaint (i.e. small) atmosphere. We found this place by happenstance while looking for another restaurant that was closed at lunch, and we were happy for it! (We were visiting WV from NC, and our friend was on a "blackened" food kick, and was quite happy to discover this gem of a cajun/creole restaurant!)
