Raspberry Chocolate Chip Ice Cream (in any of the assorted waffle cones). If I could base my entire review on the aforementioned confection, Ellen's would get five stars hands down. Unfortunately, that's not the way yelp works. The atmosphere is lovely. Each time that I have been to Ellen's, I have managed to have a seat at one of the two or three tables on the sidewalk outside, which makes for some wonderful people watching, especially when Capitol Street is buzzing with people. The inside of Ellen's isn't much to review. It's the standard tables, a handwritten menu, and the windows presenting a view of Capitol Street. Given its size, it can feel a little cramped inside, especially if a Little League team decides to have some treats there, which has happened on more than one occasion. In addition the the raspberry chocolate chip ice cream, Ellen's gains some points with their friendly and speedy staff, but that's still not enough to break away from its three star rating. I've found the food to be underwhelming. I ordered a veggie wrap which was enough for a light lunch, but had not one quality to differentiate it from any other quotidian veggie wrap on the market, of which there are already too many. I also tasted the grilled cheese that my girlfriend ordered on that same visit, and it too was lackluster. The pumpkin ice cream is alright, the pistachio is solid, and the mint chocolate chip is nothing to complain about. But seriously, raspberry chocolate chip in a waffle cone.

After engorging ourselves at the Pies & Pints across the street, my fiance and I decided to meander over to Ellen's Homemade Ice Cream for some dessert. We're from Columbus, and thanks to Jeni's I hold ice cream to a pretty high standard, but we found ourselves pretty impressed by the Dirty Chocolate flavor. It was a chocolate ice cream with a lot of extra cocoa added. It had an almost dark chocolate flavor and was quite delicious. We also loved the cinnamon flavored waffle cones - they complimented the Dirty Chocolate nicely! I also had the Espresso Oreo in my cone, and that was rather good, but it was heavier on the oreo than the espresso, which is just not what I was expecting. I wanted some more coffee kick out of it, but it was still delicious! The staff was attentive and friendly, and were eager to offer us samples to help us decide what we wanted. It looked like they had a great lunch/dinner menu as well. Loved the chalkboard menus on the wall - it made for a great look and reminded me a lot of Jeni's! Note: if you're using a credit card, they will charge you 5% more because of service fees. Not a problem at all, just a heads up!

If you ever cone to charleston and don't bring your kids here you're a horrible parent.

Ice cream is excellent! Try the Heath. Service is poor and staff lacks professionalism.

  • Fran T.

Just wonderful. Service, cleanliness, location all great. The ice cream is beyond excellent. I love the special flavors...they change often.

  • Elizabeth K.

This place is an absolute gem of Charleston!!! Their espresso oreo is a staple. Rich espresso with chunks of SOFT oreo bites. The only time I switch things up is when Guinness is one of their special flavors.

    (5)
  • Lilli K.

Delicious chocolate ice cream as well as coconut ice cream. yum!! Also a tasty squash wrap (daily special). Lovely atmosphere. I'd recommend this to everyone!!

  • Eno O.

I've been there twice and I loved my choices of ice cream both times. Awesome awesome restaurant.

    (5)
  • Brittney C.

Ellen's was really good ice cream. Expresso Oreo was delicious! The cinnamon cone was off the charts! The staff however was not energetic. They just handed us our ice cream with no smile or "have a nice day."

    (4)
  • Christopher I.

Black raspberry ice cream!!! Put that shit in your mouth! That's really all I have to say, this place is delicious. I'm not here often, but I've been here enough. Every flavor I've had is good, but that one takes the cake.

    (5)
  • Cliff H.

The ice cream was very rich and creamy. The young people working there did a good job and the atmosphere was nice. The place was busy but the prices seemed a little high for an economically challenged area. $4.00 for a small ice cream is too high for Charleston, WV.

  • Todd G.

Local treasure. Best ice cream in the area, not a chain, nice local owner and employees. Also nice coffees, salads, sandwiches, soups so come for lunch as well as a treat.

    (5)
  • Andy W.

Great spot. Delicious ice cream, wide variety of flavors, cheery staff right up until closing, big portions, and a homemade yet professional feel inside and out.

    (5)
  • Troy D.

I've had a lot of her ice cream flavors and milkshakes and they are not too strong on flavor. I also feel that everything is overpriced; I suppose that is due to it being homemade? The workers are always helpful and friendly. It's not a horrible place and I still go when I have the craving but I wish she could do something to give her ice cream and shakes more flavor.

    (3)
  • Jenny N.

I love this place! I've had every single flavor; espresso Oreo is still my favorite. It's awesome in a brownie sundae with lots of hot fudge.

    (5)
  • Matthew M.

It's obvious why this place was voted best ice cream shop in Charleston! Great service with friendly, happy staff. Great ice cream. This place is now on my must-visit list when I return.

    (5)
  • Robert A.

Three things: 1) The coffee is pretty good. 2) It's a nice place to spend a half hour. 3) The ice cream is spectacular.* What more do you want? *Especially the pumpkin and Guinness varieties. If you're ever lucky enough to be there when they have both available at the same time get a scoop of each. It's a tremendous combination.

  • Sarah R.

Love the black raspberry ice cream. The grain salads that they serve for lunch are delicious.

Always friendly and fast service with good homemade ice cream.

Well we tried to go here 2 years ago but they were closed on Memorial Day so we never gave it a 2nd thought. We were told to go to Pies and Pints across the street (5+ stars!!!) And decided we would give Ellens a try. Well the ice cream was only fair in my opinion. The flavors were not real strong and it was not as creamy as homemade ice cream should be. We tried chocolate chip (even though my daughter asked for mint chocolate chip. ..my fault for not pointing out the error), raspberry choc chip, vanilla and espresso oreo. Again, they were alright but next time I am in town ill stay at Pies and Pints and order the tiramisu instead. Oh and the staff was not so friendly...didnt seem to care we were from out of town....quite obvious by the NJ "accent" that we were not from around the corner and 5% upcharge for a credit card payment is bull!

    (3)
  • Raquel M.

Absolutely delicious coconut ice cream! I also enjoyed the texture of their waffle cones--perfectly light and crisp. The next time I'm in Charleston, I'll definitely stop by for dessert!

    (5)
  • Alicen H.

Homemade ice cream! The "maple pecan" was so delicious - maybe best ice cream cone ever! Worth the stop!

  • Sarah A.

Went here to have a light lunch after checking out their website. They have wraps, soup, salad, and a couple other options. I ordered the Thai lemongrass chicken soup that they listed as still available from the day before and a grilled cheese. This cost me $8.47 without a drink. The soup came out barely even warm and quite flavorless. The grilled cheese was made fresh but just your very basic American cheese on very plain bread. It was a disappointment for $8.47 lunch. I threw the soup away. My friend got the BLT wrap. It was about $7 and did not come with anything else. Not a bag of chips or anything. She said she would not order it again. We were able to sit at one of the tables outside and that was the highlight of the meal. If you go here stick to the ice cream or coffee. Not only was it not a good value, the food was not great either.

  • John H.

Seems laid back. Ice cream is good; not sure it can really get much better. The recipe is pretty perfect already; not reinventing the wheel here. Cute girl behind the counter. Prices were fair. Great location downtown.

    (5)
  • Sasha S.

Love the icecream, though some of the flavors aren't quite what you're expecting (I'm thinking about you, Pumpkin Pie). More expensive than some places but cheaper than others. Over all a good value for good icecream.

  • Fred T.

We stopped by after eating dinner in the area to get a tasty dessert treat. I ordered Oreo Cookie in a cinnamon waffle cone while my wife ordered Oreo Cookie and Heath Bar in a regular waffle cone. Overall, the ice cream and cones were pretty good. I don't think I'd go out of my way to return, but if I were in the area and wanted dessert, I'd stop by again. A couple of negatives are that they charge an extra 5% for credit card purchases. This seemed unnecessary given the prices of the ice cream ($10 for a single scoop and a double scoop). Also, when we walked in there were 5 employees at the counter. One was making a smoothie-type drink and another was finishing a sale, but the other three were... I don't know what. Given that, it seemed too long to get somebody to finally help us and then the rest of the crew seemed more interested in playing around than helping the customers that came in behind us. The young employees could use an older supervisor.

  • Kami C.

Love love love the ice cream, service and atmosphere. We had vanilla ice cream on regular cone, chocolate waffle cone with coffee and mocha almond ice cream and another chocolate waffle cone with dbl scoop expresso oreo and a carrot cupcake! Great flavor smooth texture totally satisfying. Will definitely go to again b4 leaving or maybe a nightly dessert during our stay! Cupcake was delicious as well.

  • Theen R.

I had the brownie sundae. Liked everything except the brownie which was not good. Ice cream was good and hearty. I thought charging extra to use my credit card was silly. I thought this was 2012. My interpretation of stars: 1 star - just start over 2 star - major improvements might bring me back 3 star - average and solid, I would come back if in the mood. 4 star - you've peaked my interest considerably, minor tweaks would get you to 5 5 star - mind blown

  • Weizhi R.

Definitely addictive. Ask for recommendations if you pay your first visit. Ice cream, smoothie, and shakes are all very very good.

    (5)
  • Megan L.

Had the mango lemongrass sorbet. Fantastic. The 5% fee for using a credit card is obnoxious.

    (4)
  • Tammy R.

Best ice cream in the state hands down!

    (5)
  • Claire D.

I've only been here once, but had a chocolate sorbet and it was much better than I expected. Great ice cream. Would definitely go back. On top of it all, it's a locally owned business, so you can feel good about spending your money there.

  • Jennifer H.

I LOVE the espresso Oreo ice cream. The soups and wraps I have tried were all great. Everything is on the pricey side, but hey, it's homemade. Great place to hang out and watch the people walk by on Capitol Street.

  • John M.

Had someone suggest Ellen's to us so decided to stop by and try it on a Sunday afternoon. Didn't realize that they had sandwiches/salads which was nice so we each got a hummus wrap - was very good rosemary hummus, but clearly they were made ahead of time and didn't include any chips or anything which would have been nice. Ice cream wise this place was very good - the wife had a scoop of pumpkin on a cone, and I had rocky road. The pumpkin was really nice - seriously tasted like good, frozen pumpkin pie, seasoning and all. Great for an early fall day. The rocky road was also very good - don't usually dig marshmallow in my ice cream but I really enjoyed it. Nothing like grabbing an ice cream cone, sitting in the sun to enjoy it, and then walking over to the book store down the street...

  • Lisa D.

Best Butter Pecan around. Choc-full of pecans and fresh creamy taste (not artificial). If you're a butter pecan fan as I am, I'm confident you'll love it!

    (5)
  • Jamie S.

Butter Pecan Ice Cream - exquisite! Chocolate Waffle Cone - average. Store- very nice, old fashion. Location - very cool part of town.

  • Heather M.

Everything you need to know can be said in these two words..."More, please."

  • Megan T.

Great Lunch specials to go. Different lunch specials daily, with great vegetarian choices that are healthy too! I even like their ice cream occasionally (and I am not a big fan of desserts!)

  • Raabia W.

One of the best things about downtown Charleston. Locally owned, operated and all the ice cream is hand made.

About Taco Bell

Taco Bell is a haven for Mexican delicacies such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, and other specialty items. Owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Taco Bell is one of the fastest growing American chains of fast food restaurants. The restaurant operates from 7,072 different locations which are mostly run by independent franchisees and licensees.

The background story of Taco Bell is interesting and inspiring for budding entrepreneurs. The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. By 1964, the restaurant also got its first franchise in Torrance. The 100th Taco Bell restaurant was opened by 1965. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.
