This is our favorite restaurant! the food, service and atmosphere are wonderful. Whenever our daughters come visit, they say, "We are going out to eat at Basil, right!?" You will not be disappointed!

Really good food. The panang curry was flavorful and tasty. Good service and very reasonable prices.

I've eaten at Basil about 3 times and find the dishes I've had to be excellent for the most part. If Yelp used 10 stars I would give it nine. Their dishes are always attractively served. And the service friendly and efficient. Usually I order one of their spicy dishes but not tonight. As our appetizer tonight we had a new item on the menu: Money bags. These are little wontons shaped like money bags. They have a filling of crab and shrimp. Divine! My entree was Basil Salmon. It was very good to excellent. It was accented with slices of green onions and had a teriyaki like sauce drizzled on. The only distraction so to speak was the blandness of the Jasmine rice. I tried some of my partner's Indonesian Fish. She chose the fish: rainbow trout. I consider the dish to be excellent with its combination of tastes and textures. For desert we shared both Creme Brulee and a Turtle Bomb. The creme brulee was exquisite and turtle bomb very good-excellent. There are ounly two tables available for outside seating. They face the parking lot so not a very good ambiance. The decor inside is somewhat eclectic given the fact that the owner (or a friend) loves to travel to Ireland. There are some beautiful pictures from Ireland on the walls. One yelper, Zachary J. mentions catfish. I've had it in NOLA where it was very good but the few times I've tried it in the Midwest it was awful. One server said that the difference is that it is farm raised.

Came here for lunch the other day and I had the beef salad. The portion size was just right and the flavor was amazing. Will def. be back.

Went to Basil for lunch today. I ordered the trio sampler but swapped out the calamari for chicken satay. The sampler was 15.00 as is or 3 apps of your choice for 20.00. The calamari on its own is 9.00 and the chicken satay is 7.00 .... So basically, they charged me more for a cheaper alternative. Seems asinine. I also ordered the fried rice with chicken (10.00) spicy. It was so spicy I could hardly eat it and I love spicy. Also, there was another level up of spice. I cannot imagine what that would be like. Burn your face off? My son had a juice. I had a sparkling water. Our bill was 36.00 and change. 42+ dollars for lunch with my 4 year old. Never again. Super cute place. Small with only about 15 tables, but really cool decor. Lovely, clean and fully equipped bathroom (hand lotion, a basket of real towels, etc.) I would definitely stop in for a drink or 2 with my husband or a friend.

What a gem. Our party had the red curry soup, Tom kah soup and yellow curry. I also (strangely) ordered a baguette to go with my soup. Servings were large enough to fill us up for dinner. While it's not cheap, I feel like it was reasonable for quality, service and atmosphere. My only complaint was that my Tom kah soup had some of the tough lemongrass minced still in the soup.

Holy Crap! Look at all them 5-Star ratings!?! The three stars of this review represent doing alright considering their location. The food is overpriced for being simple and lackluster. Our waiter thought he was waiting at a fine-dining establishment. I'm not sure if this was hilarious, scary, or a combination of both. Alright, let's put this guy to the test. "What do you recommend?" The duck eh? Some sort of pineapple-chicken-pepper dish? Okay...I'll have the latter. A bunch of bell peppers, chicken bits, and canned pineapple chunks...swimming in whatever they overly sauced it with. I make better stir-fry in my kitchen. When you make a recommendation to a customer, you need to bring your A-game. If the only A-game you can bring is your duck...don't add a second recommendation. I can take a subtle hint if you re-recommend the duck. After two failed attempts at eating out in the area, we decided that the Green Mill in the Holiday Inn was our safest bet. So maybe this review should be on Wisconsin Yelpers instead of Basil.

Checked it out for the first time with my wife last night, and everything was very good. The decor and overall environment was a nice change from the typical Wausau restaurant. We had the Jalapeño Ravioli appetizer, which was great - just the right amount of spice. I had the spicy shrimp pasta and my wife had the crispy noodles with pork. Both were very good. My wife found the crispy noodles themselves to be a strange texture, but woke up this morning craving the overall flavor of the dish. Prices were higher than average for the area, but not out of range for the overall experience. We will definitely be going back!

Great Ribeye! Staff was terrific. They took the time to get to know us and thoroughly reviewed the menu options prior to our meal. Everyone that ate with us enjoyed their food.

Every time I go I have to try something new because there are so many wonderful things on the menu. I've never been disappointed. Very fresh quality ingredients, however I wish their tilapia wasn't farm raised. The service is great. They have some great wines. My only complaint is I wish they were in a bigger building. Not many tables and they are crammed next to each other. And no coat racks. Having your coat on the back of your chair with the tables so crowded is not very comfortable.

This place is amazing! I got the Pad Thai with shrimp, my husband got the salmon with noodles. It was very delicious! The turtle molten cake with coffee was a wonderful finish. Beautiful atmosphere and great service!

Came here with a friend for dinner, and it felt unfulfilled. Pro: service, management, atmosphere, music. Con: the food and price. It has a nice trendy feel to the decor, where it's a great place for a casual dinner, business, or a date. Our waitress was top-notch, and the owner stopped by to check on us (a wonderful touch). Then came the food. We got the sampler platter since it was the best way for us to try a little bit of everything. The spring rolls were average, as the fillings were unimpressive in taste. The calamari was subpar. For the entree, the volcano fish was average as well, as the outer crust of the catfish (as recommended by our waitress) was flavorful, but none penetrated the actual fish. The presentation of the dish looked sloppy, as the fish lied on the rice in no particular organizing fashion. Overall I'd consider taking someone there again, but will steer clear of their expensive dishes thinking you get what you paid for.

Always an excellent time when I eat at Basil! The owners are friendly and fantastic! The food is always delicious! They are always trying to introduce special dishes too! I love the Coconut Shrimp ! My favorite! Great atmosphere ! I am a lifelong customer !

Fantastic meal! I ordered the curry trifecta, and each was absolutely amazing. I rarely write reviews, but finding the restaurant was a huge coup in Wisconsin, which seems to lack decent fare. Everything seemed fresh, and the chicken lacked the typical fatty trimmings that so many restaurants don't cut out. Good brews too!! I'll be back from Chicago again when I come back into the area.

I really enjoyed my first visit to Basil. Our waiter was very helpful, friendly and attentive. He listed the specials off and left our mouths watering with the descriptions. The specials may have been recommended prices but they were certainly not sale items. I had a glass of wine, chicken house fried rice and cheesecake (with Fuji Apples). All were very excellent. The people I was with had the Hawaiian Ribeye topped with shrimp and sweet potatoes ($28). They both had glowing reviews. It was expensive ($97 for 3 people) but in my mind well worth it. I'll definitely be back to try other items on the menu!

Coming up from Chicago for business, the bar was set pretty low for the dining options I would have up here in Wisconsin. Basil totally changed that perception. Not only was the food great, but the service was impressive with a very attentive server. As the previous review mentions, the owner was there talking to some people at the bar, but visible the whole time. The only thing that was stopping this place from being on par with stuff in Chicago was the very reasonable prices. I would definitely come back here the next time I am in town for work.

YUM! This is one of my go-to joints. Very refreshing for Central Wisconsin. The meals are delish! It has a very modern atmosphere. If you are going for dinner after 5:30 make reservations! Not a huge dining room, so it fills up quick.

We've waited to try Basil for a long time because I thought the food a tad pricy. And I hate to sound like a whiner but the experience left me crestfallen. Hubby ordered the sirloin steak sandwich with onion rings and I ordered the House fried rice with beef and the southeast Asian egg rolls. The sirloin sandwich was more chunks than slices and the promised cheese was almost non-existent. The onion rings were cooked frozen from a food service bag. The egg rolls were really spring rolls that were no different than what you get at the Chinese buffet. They were served with runny flavorless sweet and sour sauce. Charging $10 for fried rice here is just criminal. There was little meat and it was not tender. You got about 2 cups of rice filled with Birds Eye frozen mixed vegetables which was just awful. If they want to charge such high prices for their "cuisine" they could have made the onion rings and "egg rolls" from scratch and take the rice off the menu unless it was to be served with fresh stir fried veggies. Our server was pleasant and efficient. I chose to bite my tongue and not complain. Also, I do like some jazz music but what they played here was obnoxious and annoying.

My wife and I found this place quite by accident, we had a fantastic lunch- food was delicious, service was terrific and the layout of the restaurant was very charming-My wife and I are extremely picky about restaurants so if we give it a good review you know it's good!

I have been to Basil Resaurant twice now and would say that it is over-rated. Yeah, it is a nice change from typical restaurants in Wausau, but really, the food is just OK. Nothing fantastic. I had the pho and panang chicken, which were alright but just nothing to write home about. The interior was nice and the servers were attentive, but again, just a mediocre dining experience.

This place is not only great, it's CONSISTENTLY great which I think is a quality that is hard to find in a restaurant. I like to try new places. I'm not usually one to go back to the same place over and over, but I always make an exception in Basil. It's definitely the place to go if you really want guaranteed good food and service. The menu stays pretty consistent with the usual great items, plenty enough options to try something different each time, but the specials they have are so amazing, it's hard to pick something off the menu instead. They really change things up and have great offerings in that regard. I've ordered take-out for lunch and it's equally amazing as the sit down dining. Just great quality fresh ingredients. I do wish their tilapia was not farm raised, but that is hard to find anywhere in WI. If I had to pick one bad thing about Basil it would be that they need to find a larger space. This place has become too popular to be so small. The tables are right on top of each other, literally maybe 6" in between, not even enough to walk in between. That's just too bad when you want to have a conversation with your dining partner and not let everyone else hear. And if you don't have reservations on the weekend, forget about it (which is a good indication of a great place).

Thai + Irish Fusion?! Brilliant. When I asked the local hotel associates for a dinner recommendation in Weston, WI, I expected to hear a bunch of chain restaurants. To my surprise, however, I was provided with a B&W map detailing many unique restaurants in the nearby area! Who knew? The one that perked my interest was when the attendant suggested Basil and mentioned that the wife (Thai) and husband (Irish) blended their cuisines. It's a match so crazy, my colleague and I HAD to try it! We were so happy that we did! The Yelp reviews varied (like most restaurants), but there were many four and five star reviews tipping their hat to the Thai-Irish fusion. After looking over the pictures and reviews, talking to the waitress, and determining our own hankering for dinner, we both settled on the Volcano fish. One of us got tilapia + crab cake version and the other the "Thai catfish" version + coconut shrimp (see picture in gallery). We couldn't have been happier with our choice! The perfectly cooked fish had a nice spicy blend set on a bed of freshly shredded cabbage and carrot chiffonade with another layer of sautéed vegetables on top (see close up picture in gallery). I truly took my time with my dish, savoring each bite, and eventually at the whole thing. The shrimp and/or crab cake wasn't really that great an "extra", but we both admired the sauce with "Basil" written in sriracha. :-) Despite complaints of high costs, my colleague and I each enjoyed our entree + extra (shrimp or crab cake) + a bottle of wine for under $100. Maybe high for Weston, but not for suburban Chicago. I will be spending a fair amount of time in the area for the next six moths to a year, so I'm ecstatic to have Basil's around when I need a GREAT meal. #seeyousoon

Great service, easy menu but mediocre food and expensive for Asian dishes. The menu features many Thai dishes and locally I've had better Thai dishes with cheaper prices. I think the dishes are tailored towards "Caucasian" customers but I could be wrong. If you had real authentic Thai food, you won't like it here. I ordered the volcano fish and it was good but nothing to brag to others. I probably won't go back. I do enjoy the quick and friendly service and that's why I am giving it 3 stars.

Seriously wonderful. The service is spectacular, the food melts in your mouth - really great flavor combinations. The atmosphere is welcoming and decorated so nicely! I would certainly call it a gem for the Wausau area.

  • Mk L.

Decor is nice and the wait staff is attentive. Good customer service. The food was just ok. Portion size was a bit small for the price and it doesn't have the authentic spiciness of Thai food. 4 stars for the service, but just 3 stars for the food.

First and foremost, lets remember where this place is located....Central Wisconsin. So don't expect most of the fish, like Catfish, to be overly fresh or too good. However, their Curry dishes are solid and they are willing to prepare most dishes to the costumers liking. The staff is friendly and the owner is very, very nice. Not the most expensive place ever either. I haven't had a bad meal here (ate here visiting probably 7 or 8 times) This place is more like a 5 Star for the Wausau area, but if this restaurant is transplanted to say NYC or Seattle it is out of business in a month....so keep that in mind if you have the idea that you are getting 'Big City' fine dining. Oh and FYI....sometimes at night they have live music. BE WARNED, this place is not that big and the music is not that good. Can be a bit annoying if sitting too close.

Celebrated my anniversary at Basil the other weekend. I ordered the curry sampler (red, yellow, & green curry dishes). Flavor was okay, would likely not order this particular dish again. A little too gingery for me or something. Red & green curry were HOT/Spicy, which is noted on the menu. Husband ordered Passion Shrimp. Very spicy. He loved it. I could barely eat a mouthful. It was just flaming. Wait staff were EXCELLENT and very attentive. Atmosphere was nice. It is a very small place. They did have a nice selection of wine. I'd likely return once more to try something new since everyone keeps raving about this place. Then make my final decision whether I like the place or not.

Went on a Saturday evening at the end of January at 7:30, my wife and me. Had to wait to get seated which was no biggie, but then watch others seated after us receive menus water etc before Anyone even came to greet us at the table. Speaking of water it is not very good here FYI so get a beverage. Good beer selection so that helps. Nice ambiance and decor if not a bit crowded with both pictures and people/tables. I was really hoping to find another place to be able to take my out of town clients from NYC other than "Back When" and "Wish.".Unfortunately the food was only so so. I had their Red Snapper special and it was quite over done. The flavor of the meat that was left was great, as well as the sides that came with it. If the special of the evening is not up to par it makes me wonder about the rest. Simple steps executed well could turn this place into a great stop but for now no better than 3 stars.

Had a wonderful lunch at Basil recently. My husband and I enjoyed the tri-curry, which consisted of a very generous sampling of the yellow curry, red curry, and green curry with shrimp. It was also served with white rice. They were all very good, with the yellow curry as my favorite. We also shared the volcano fish which was spectacular. We opted to have the catfish in the volcano fish as recommended by our server. Excellent choice. It was just a wonderful dish. The service was also very good. The only downside is that the wine list is limited, but the quality of the food made up for this. Will definitely eat here again.

The food, atmosphere, and service are all phenomenal! We have been here for both lunch and supper numerous times, also we have used the drive thru and never have been disappointed. The music on the weekends are always a special treat and great to see the support for local artists. The staff is the icing on the cake with being so friendly and professional. If you want a nice night out with amazing food and service this is the place to go!

Love this charming and tasteful place. Ran by the owner and and you are always welcomed here with open arms. He also has one of the most amazing menus. Great place to have a martini or wine with a fine meal at a reasonable price.

Good service. Food was an interesting mix of Asian-inspired combined with eclectic American. Very good flavor. Music on some Fridays or Saturdays. Fairly expensive. A nice special date place, but the closing time is too early (9pm on all days) so you have to have a plan on where to go after dinner.

An unexpected gem in central WI! Great menu with varied, healthy options. I had the grilled salmon special served over mixed greens (yum) and the creme brulee (hey, the chef talked me into it!). Was welcomed by very friendly staff and regulars ("The Rat Pack"). Traveling for work can be dreary, so it's always nice to find a friendly home away from home to relax with a drink and some good food. No live music this night, but apparently there's a traditional Celtic group playing on some nights.

This place is fabulous. As mentioned previously the spring rolls are delicious - try the tempura variety. Tonight they had a guest chef who prepared a tilapia dish that was marinated in a light soy sauce marinade and out of this world!!! Besides that this place is fun and friendly!!
