This is a common stop for us if we want a beer during a bike ride. The convenient location along the Hwy 12 bike path makes it ideal for this. Always experienced friendly and fast bartenders. Once they even opened early for us when we were with a group. Neat old bar that serves a lot of local beer and liquors, including Death's Door and (owner) Travis Haase's famous cherry pie, cow pie and apple pie liqueurs. It's a locals place, but they welcome everyone, including cyclists and motorcyclists. They have a pool table, TVs and a juke box. It's a great place to take out of town friends for an authentic Wisconsin tavern experience.
Do you want to drink strong drinks for cheap? Do you want them mixed by a friendly, competent bartender? Do you want to play Big Buck Hunter and darts? How about Toby Keith on the jukebox? Jewel? THEN THIS IS THE PLACE. I've been here several times, many of them post-fish fry at Dorf Haus. Every time has been a complete blast. The patrons are great, the drinks are great, and I always leave with a smile. The history of the bar (Mae, the late former owner was still bartending at 101!) is the icing on the cake.
If you're looking for a drink and a place to chat with friends, this is it. They offer a pool and foosball table for your entertainment (FYE). Several TV's but minimal seating other than bar seating....I have yet to experience the outdoor seating but looks like a great place to catch the sunset. Pizza was the only food option and I'm guessing it was frozen pizza. Suited what I was looking for. It's worth a stop if you want a dive and drink.

Blowin’ Smoke BBQ

Reviews:
Super disappointed. Everything was dry and lacked flavor. Meat needed to be sent back as it was cold. Was really hoping there would be a sampling of sauces at the table. Mushrooms were pretty unappetizing too. Brisket was left on the plate. Difficult to eat leather. Was really hoping it would have been a hit.
So I've ordered food to go, and eaten at this establishment. I've had the brisket sandwich and their ribs. I enjoyed the smoked taste versus the normal BBQ approach. The restaurant is small but is welcoming and comfortable. The service was good when I went there. I plan to continue going there. I was very pleased. Waunakee needed a place like this. Also they sell meat by the pound if you want to throw a party, so that's pretty cool.
I have only had the burnt ends, and they are fantastic, I just wished you got more with your order.

China Wok Chinese Restaurant

Reviews:
I eat lunch here about once a month. My particular favorites are the Lo Mein noodles topped with black pepper chicken or the seafood delight. Sometimes black pepper chicken has too much black pepper, but I always like it when I eat here. The steamed dumplings are pretty good. Sometimes they have salt & pepper shrimp which is very good but it isn' a selection at lunch all the time. The stuffed mushrooms are a favorite of mine too. Chinese buffets can be an adventure. Often the food is too sweet or too salty for my taste, but I like the China Wok in Waunakee. Usually they are quite busy for lunch, which means the food is replenished often, which is a good thing. Despite the fact that they are often quite busy, I don't think I've ever had to wait long for a table.
Stay clear of the buffet. We stopped for lunch and almost everything was cold and rubbery. We also ordered the wonton soup which was salty and we ordered a shrimp dish and some of the shrimps were mushy and others were cooked normal. We would not go back.
Very good. A typical buffet. Get there when they are busy for the freshly prepared dishes. Not the same as Imperial Gardens on University Ave as in the special spices. Still a great place to eat.

Ordered for the first time. Won't do that again. It didn't taste fresh. It was hard. Had burnt pieces on it. Really disappointing...
I have been to Doughboy's a number of times over the last few years. It's a great place to go with friends to have a drink and watch some of the game or to sit down and have a nice meal. The layout works well with the bar and seating on one side and then the sit-down dining tables on the other side. Friendly service and awesome pizza. Whoever is cooking those pizzas in the back is definitely putting in the effort to make sure everything that comes out of the kitchen is cooked to perfection. My favorite pizza is the Angry Rooster that comes with chicken, jalapenos, hot sauce, and ranch. Definitely a solid combination. I would recommend this locally owned establishment to anyone!
We love the Chicken, Bacon, Ranch. Chicken...good, Bacon...good, Ranch...good. The deal with buying an 18" and better and getting a free cheese pizza is also a big hit in our house. We had wings one night as an appetizer and they were so good, I asked where they were from...Brakebush. That is a Wisconsin company that is well known for their quality products. I think the wings are from the same place and they are goooood! The only reason I didn't give this place 5* is because of the arcade area. There are at least two games that aren't even stocked. Get rid of them. It was also weird you couldn't retrieve a ball from the crane game. They would probably make more money if the kids could actually win the 5 cent ball that are in there.

A little bar on the top of Lake Mendota that's been around for 40 years. They have a pretty robust liquor selection and make a damn fine Old Fashioned. If you found yourself at this bar having no idea where you were, you could at least feel confidant you were in Wisconsin because: * Wood paneling... everywhere * TWO shuffleboard tables * Fish Fry & Walleye breakfasts * Meat raffle

This place is high class I must say. The food is still the same as everywhere else but the feel inside is totally different from any other McDonald's. The decorations inside makes you forget about being in McDoland's. It is very clean and very quiet. I didn't see many kids in the play area each time I went in. Very quiet and pleasant, something you don't say about McDonalds. I have seen many of them using their laptop with a cup of coffee in front of them. I was very impressed.

Cuco’s Mexican Restaurant

350 N Century Ave
Waunakee, 53597
Reviews:
The word I would use is unremarkable. My husband has coerced me to go to Cuco's three times now and every time has been just ok. Not good, not bad, just...meh. I would never choose to go back on my own that's for sure. I have had chicken enchiladas, shrimp "cocktail" and some burrito. All were mediocre. My husband gets the burrito cucos and loves it. My 2 year old son loves the chicken enchiladas and refried beans...then again he eats crayons so you might not want to trust his palette lol! If you are looking for passable Mexican food you'll be happy. If you're looking for more, perhaps you should pass on Cuco's.
Well, I diverted from the main highway specifically to go to this restaurant because YELP states they were open until 10:30 PM. We roll into the parking lot, and the stickers on the door say Fri-Sat: 11am-10: 0pm. The beer and open signs are off, but the door is unlocked and we can see some people dining inside. The hostess gave a strange look, so we asked if they were open, and we were informed they were not. This happened at 9:40pm. So... Apparently... 10: 0pm is not to be interpreted as 10:30pm... But as 9 o'whateverwefeellike.
So I'm writing this In real time while having lunch here for the first time. Some neighbors recommended it and if you've ever been to Waunakee you know that pickings are slim when it comes to restaurants. So you walk in and are greeted to a very clean and friendly Mexican style restaurant. I was seated immediately and had chips and salsa all within about a minute. The chips are warm and the salsa cold and fresh. You can see and taste the fresh cilantro. The server comes over and asks me what I would like to drink and hands me a fairly large menu, he then points out the lunch menu on the back saving me from studying the menu. A couple minutes later my sprite arrives, again in a very nice clean glass. Soda to syrup mix is good. I decide to have the lunch steak fajitas as I continue to much down the chips... Lunch comes pretty quick I've taken a pic of the plate... Everything was the right temp and the food was flavorful. The rice was firm, the refried beans are made with a nice consistency. The veggies and meat had a nice char and spice. All in all a good meal, now the real test will come when I bring the wife and kids!

Consistently good, amazing fried chicken, solid salad and soup bar. (This is weird to yelp about a place I don't remember first visiting.)
The salad bar is about the only thing going for it. Had hoped that a place that is generally pretty busy would be a great supper club, unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case. The feel, the decor, the bar are typical supper club but the entrees...nope. My wife and I have tried the Friday fish fry 2x and both times were very disappointed. The fish looked and tasted exactly like they came from a box of VandeKamps frozen fish filet. Same unnatural shape, thin, with same breading. Nothing like a true beer battered cod or haddock. I think the only reason the place is busy is due to the cheap prices and lack of other options in the area. We won't be going again, it may well be the worst fish fry I have ever had in my life.
Came here with family for a Friday Night Fish fry. We had a reservation for 5:30 and were seated promptly, although I was the youngest one there by 30 years! Traditional supper club, outdated decor. They make a great old fashioned. The fish was definately frozen and overcooked, chewy and lacking flavor. It was actually hard to cut. Fish should flake, this didn't . It was extreely disappointing. We also ordered cheese curds. They were ok. The cheese wasn't melted so either they wern't cooked enough or sat in a window to die. I woudn't recommend this place to anyone else. It did look like they had a beautiful salad bar although for $3 extra, I didn't need it. Our server was wonderful however. She was attentive and the pace of the meal was nice.

Lucky’s Bar & Grille

We stage our Thursday night cycling club rides out of Lucky's, so this is a weekly destination for me during cycling season. Aside from being a good location for this purpose, Lucky's is a great place to refuel and hang out after a ride. We really like the expansive outdoor seating and they've always got plenty of space for us. Lucky's has a solid tap list, with all of the styles covered by good local, regional, and farther-flung beers with some cool surprises now and then. The menu is what I would call a pretty expansive bar repertoire, with a nice variety of burgers, sandwiches, pizzas, and entrees, and a really good list of appetizers. I can vouch for the burgers; and one of my favorite things is the Papas Grande appetizer, which I get as a meal - waffle fries with cheese sauce, seasoned ground beef, tomatoes, jalapenos, onions, all the toppings of nachos. This is one of my guilty pleasures and something I look forward to all week! The waitstaff at Lucky's is friendly and engaging, but I wish they had few more of these nice people. It gets busy (Lucky's also has two sand volleyball courts, indoor & outdoor bars, and lots of tables), and it can take quite a while to get a drink. I've seen some cases where many of us would have had another round, had the service been quicker. Reading some other reviews, this seems consistent, and I'd wager an extra server or two would really pay off for Lucky's, and would make for happier customers and more return visits. (And more stars on Yelp!).
We play volleyball at Lucky's in Waunakee, which is unfortunate because otherwise I would not go back. We have literally found nails and glass (along with the rocks) in their sand courts, and the nets are terrible. The referees show up, but don't actually call any illegal hits, and you can only see the score half the time. Even the balls are poor quality from being left out and getting water-logged. Initially, I would have thought their outdoor patio was nice. But the firepits are never lit (they are always out of gas), and we have had to move seats because some of the staff won't serve you food if you are sitting near one of the (turned off) fire pits. The selection of liquors outside is a joke, and the beer always seems too carbonated. The service outside has also been atrociously slow. Just 2 weeks ago it took over an hour to get 4 simple sandwich meals and last week it took 20 minutes to get an appetizer! Inside, the service and alcohol selection has been slightly better. I would definitely NOT recommend the crab cakes, and the green beans are definitely weird. Three people tried them, and no one could tell why they were so bad (some type of sauce maybe?). Once our volleyball season is over, I don't think I'll be back.
Baked cod was pretty good. But the service was terrible. Neither the host or the server knew what the happy hour special was. And when we finally found out, it was pretty weak.....$0.50 off rails and domestic taps. Boring!!! Looks like a fun place to watch a have if you can't watch it at home. But we will never go there again.
