Didn't get to go here my first trip up last year but was determined to go this time--friends have said they have good burgers and I like me a good burger!!! There's a sign posted not to expect it really fast but the wait for a couple burgers, fries and sodas wasn't too bad at all. Well worth the little wait on a beautiful day. Really good burgers, hot skinny fries and cold sodas. They have a covered outdoor eating area with picnic tables, tables out in the sun, I think a play area for kids, a big wooden swing to sit on.....and a juke box. Loaded jukebox. I'm a music junkie and could have sat on that swing all day eating ice cream loading $$ into it. Didnt have room to eat ice cream that day but now have a "reason" to go back. I guess the business burnt down in the early 2000's and rebuilt the next year. So glad they did!!
Great place to stop for a sweet treat. The ice cream cones and malts are the best. Try the cherry malt. Real Door Cty cherries used. Nice little juke box for outdoor music. Grab a malt before you hop on the ferry
The Albatross is an essential stop, whenever I hit the island during the summer season. The beef in their burgers are top-notch. I eat a lot of burgers... I mean a LOT of burgers, and their hamburger meat is some of the most savory and juicy I've had. They're generous with toppings, have numerous specialty burgers, lost of sides, and hundreds of combinations of milkshakes and malts. The line can get pretty long, at peak hours, but the staff still manages to cook up tasty food in a reasonable amount of time. They have a nice open-air seating area, with a jukebox, bench-swings, and a small play area for kids. I'd definitely recommend the Alby for a tasty drive-in style lunch.

Best kept secret on the island. You'd never guess it just by driving by. If you're here in season, go for dinner. If out of season, you're out of luck. Simple menu but all well prepared, well presented, and well served. Sit on the deck and enjoy the view if you can - it overlooks Detroit island and harbor - beautiful. This is really one of the few places to enjoy a reasonably sophisticated meal (dinner) on the island. And as a well respected local put it to us, "It's the only place we eat on the island."
This is probably the best restaurant on Washington Island -- but that's not saying much. Washington Island is a wonderful place to visit -- it's like going back to how Door County was 30 years ago, before the crowds, condos developments and traffic jams on Route 42. Unfortunately, that also means very few decent restaurants. Washington Island only has a few places where you can get an edible meal, and they are: Washington House Inn (but that's fine dining and very expensive -- and I think it may be closed right now?), the Albatross (which is basically fast food and you have to sit on a picnic bench) and the Sailor's Pub, which is somewhere between the two. Sailor's Pub serves typical American style food and local specialties such as whitefish in a casual atmosphere. It is family-friendly. It's right on the water, so you may be able to get a table with a view. It's a little overpriced and the food isn't spectacular, or creative in any way, but the food is infinitely better than some of the other horrible places to eat on the island (*cough* Nelsen's Hall *cough*). Service is a little on the slow side, but friendly, which is typical of the Island.
I rented mopeds on the island & drove around the island looking for a place open after 5 pm on a Sunday. Then after 30 mins of stopping numerous places in the rain, a gentleman referred us to this place. I gotta tell you the server was sweet & the food was delicious. I would refer anyone to this place. The outside views from inside were gorgeous. I wish it would of not been raining because I would of sat outside for dining. I had a steak & some shrimp with a dinner salad. The salad was huge & tasty. They served warm & fresh bread with olive oil dipping sauce. I wish I lived near this place to eat here once a month. I'm still daydreaming about the shrimp I had. The best I've ever had.

Descriptive phrase: what's the island-equivalent of "townie bar"? Stopped into Karly's Bar on the tail-end of a bike trip on Washington Island. It's located right on the main drag by most other island establishments and features outdoor seating, a bar, and a basement dinner space. We came in and sat at the U-shaped bar. The place has a slow, island-time feel to it. There's odd knick-knacks, elderly locals, fishermen in from the catch, and Swamp People on the tube. I ordered a Capital Brewery Island Wheat, since their wheat comes from Washington Island. It was poured in a special frosted island glass. Very refreshing. The bartender (owner?) was a funny and pleasant woman, with no ill-will to tourists such as ourselves. She walked us through two bar games she has listed on a blackboard (we lost), and out of nowhere started reciting campy jokes. Fun place, nice vibe, great stop on the island for a brew.
Ordered the bloody mary and it was really good. Not too salty, or spicy, and the lady bartender is so sweet! My boyfriend had the margarita which he enjoyed very much. We ordered cheese curds which was a great compliment to our drinks.
Went to Karly's this past Saturday for dinner. Food was great although the downstairs (basement) dining room had little to no athmosphere. I almost took a header on the steep, goofy steps near the bottom - be careful ! I had the Saturday Prime Rib special $20 and it was perfect. Everone else in my party opted for various combos of salads/sandwiches/soup. Everone was happy and felt they got plenty of food. My understanding is that there are few real options for sit-down dinner on the Island so this is a keeper.
