The place was busy when we came in. We were able to get a table fairly quickly. But getting a waitress took a while for anyone to acknowledge us. Then the waitress we did get was very nice. The Walleye sandwich came out plain and bland. I had to ask for the stuff that should have come with it. My fries were cold and the sandwich did not have much taste. This is the second time we have been here and probably will not be back.

Just ate the walleye on the bun and beef vegetable soup. Fantastic food. Pretty tasty for a small restaurant, great service. Nice People. It's a nice change from your typical yuppie stuck up staff and customers. Will come back next time I'm in Wisconsin. Five stars.

Okay, but was expecting more. We stopped here based on decent reviews about this place from TripAdvisor and Yelp. Was expecting more of a supper club atmosphere for some reason (perhaps from the menu look online?) but was initially pleased by the pub feel of the place when we entered. The first thing that hit us as strange however was how quiet it was in the place, even being half full. We went to the bar and made jokes to the bartender (friendly enough gal) about if they had any music or a jukebox. She apologized and put up the satellite music up to about 1 and we could barely hear it but we didn't fight it and just laughed. We ended up deciding a bar table would fit our family of four best and ordered. The "must have" Jake's Eggrolls" were overfried but still zesty. My son ordered the Wisconsin Cheese Steak, my daughter ordered Steve's Grilled Cheese Sandwich, my wife the queen cut prime rib and me the turkey club. Daughter and mom also ordered the soup/salad bar. In short, my son loved his cheese steak (it was great based on my samples), the salad bar soup was very tasty, but otherwise your average salad bar, the grilled cheese was okay, but my daughter (who is a grilled cheese afficinado) didn't even want to waste time with the second half. Wife loved the prime rib and gave it a big thumbs up. My turkey club was strange- I have many in my day and there was some overpowering scent that we all tied back to the lettuce for some reason-- I ate 1/2 sandwich and thought I better not test my luck. The beers were okay (we had the horny goat watermelon wheat and Jake's Pale Ale). I guess overall we were all expecting more, but it meet our needs. But for $70 tab for four with 3 beers I think we could have done better. We heard and saw this place does a lot of catering, so perhaps their attention to food is moving that way vs. their restaurant. We will eat somewhere else next time in Sparta.

I'm loathe to bash small-town local eateries, but I just can't let it slide in this case. We stopped by for the Friday Fish Fry, and the place is attractive enough inside. Comfortable setting, looks recently remodeled, no problems there. Unfortunately, the food and service--why one generally returns to restaurants--were a massive fail. Service: I'm a beer lover, and when I walked in, it looked like they had a solid tap selection. I ordered a Potosi from the menu on the table, and the waitress came back to say they didnt' have it and the menu was outdated. No biggie obviously, so I asked what else they had. She named the three big macro options and said she couldn't recall the rest. I asked about a few specific beers I thought I'd seen, and she said she didn't know and just sat their waiting. I ended up smiling and said that I could just go up to the bar and check for myself, and she said, "great thanks" and walked away. That's obviously not what you do when you're waiting tables, even if you are young, inexperienced, etc..It was nowhere near busy at the time, and it really got under my skin. And they do actually have a really solid draft selection, sadly. Lots of craft selections. Food: For 11.95, I got a decent salad bar, a cold baked potato, and two pieces of quite possibly the worst cod I've ever had in my life. And I'm from wisconsin, have been to a billion fish fries. Not only was the portion tiny(the fish was a little bigger than a fish stick, and perfectly rectangular), but you could almost taste the freezer burn. bad bad bad. No flavor in the overly deep fried batter. My girlfriend's baked cod with white sauce was a colossal mistake. You can make a cream sauce(and not quite get it right) to slather on fish, but it's difficult to cover up the flavor of a fish that tastes like rubber. And grizzly fries? they're just cold crinkle cut that culvers would reject. Conclusion: Maybe it was a bad night, but I guarantee you that any bar in town, the knights of columbus(next door I think), VFW or any number of places are going to have better fish at better prices with a server who doesn't force you to figure out the menu options for yourself. We weren't mad after we'd left--it was kind of funny how out of wack things were. We were just disappointed.

A more typically restaurant/sports bar for Sparta, very good service, average atmosphere, a decent menu and excellent food. The meals were reasonably priced for what you get, good specials and nice salad bar.
