I always grab No. 1 Chinese after my haircuts next door, and despite the negative reviews, I've always found it to be consistent and pretty good! The pricing is definitely fair, and we can get dinner for 2 for a super reasonable price. I usually get sesame chicken or something similar, and I have never had any issues. Timely, good food, as long as you remember that it's still takeout Chinese, and friendly staff. I have no problem returning here again and again, and I've definitely had WAY worse! I'd recommend No. 1 Chinese for sure!

I live within walking distance from this restaurant and wish the food and service were better because I love good Chinese food. Wish I didn't have to drive 4 miles for It. I occasionally give No. 1 a chance due to convenience but I have learned my lesson. My last order for beef and broccoli, sesame chicken and 2 egg rolls was delivered to me 25 minutes after promised. I opened the bag and it was someone else's order. I called back and was told rudely by them that I received what I ordered. After 12 minutes of arguing I conveniences them I had the wrong order and was redelivered my correct food. Chicken was very chewy and old. Maybe 1 and a half ounces of beef in the beef dish. Vegetables we're all soggy. Egg rolls were very greasy, small and bland. Served with flavorless duck sauce, not the sweet and sour that I requested. Even the rice was over cooked and tasted old. I've learned my lesson and will never return.

I've not had great Chinese food since I moved to Milwaukee 3 years ago. The food here is pretty good imo. The atmosphere not so great...this is a call ahead and pick up or delivery kind of place for sure.

Oh, poor No. 1. Such BAAADDD reviews. I can't lie though - you're AOK in my book. Living across the street you have satisfied that last minute craving many a night. Your veggies are always fresh (seeming). Sure you're egg rolls are nothing to write home about, and your crab rangoon... well let's just say I've had better. But - You are always really quite friendly and fast. I normally go with the fake "vegetarian" meat. I really have no clue what it is exactly. It must be tofu? I honestly don't know.. but it taste's pretty darn OK. So, yeah. A-OK sums it up for me.

Not just the worst Chinese food I've ever had, simply the worst food I've ever had.

The best price to quality/ quantity ratio you will find. This is my go to Chinese take out place because it's reasonably priced, I've yet to have anything wrong with my meals and their delivery is super fast compared to some other comparable restaurants. They also have the best crab Rangoon I've ever had.

With so many options for Chinese in the area I am surprised this place is around. This isn't even mediocre Chinese this is way below the bar. I recently moved to the area and decided to try it out and was very very disappointed. 1st off when I arrived it wasn't ready within the window they gave me. And then when you walk in the place you question should I be eating here. Not the cleanest conditions. I really had high hopes.

So, I sometimes ignore my intuition. Today was the day. I had an errand in the area over my :45 lunch, and my fave local joint doesn't serve lunch so I had just enough time to pick up something quick, like Chinese take-out. Now, I am used to stellar take-out, like across town in my neighborhood at Great Taste. I also love to frequent a handful of truly good Mandarin Chinese restaurants in the Midwest. So the bar is rather high. But I was realistic. I expected mediocre food, at the level of a buffet. What I got was much worse. I will say that the service was very friendly, and the food came out fast for take-out. I hoped that both were signs of good things to come. I had to meet the $10 minimum because I use debit to pay for everything, and that was no big deal. But that meant I ordered Spring Rolls, Wontons, and my entree, the Kung Pao chicken with white rice. Pretty basic stuff, right? Well, the wontons were like little folded leathery tortilla shells fried to death and without any filling whatsoever. They might have been good to dip in salsa, but they were flavorless and hard to bite into. The Spring Rolls were stunted, just over 2" long each, and in a medium weight wrapper. They were perfectly fried, but the insides were blanched voids with just traces of carrot. They were palatable with soy sauce, but were definitely not delicious or interesting. Still, they were the best thing I had from No. 1. The entree was inedible. I poured it out on the rice and my first thought was that the peanuts looked old. They were blanched white and tasted like they looked. I bit into them and they were chewy, not crunchy as they should be when stir fried. My only guess is that they were microwaved, not stir fried. No trace of burning or color existed on them whatsoever. The celery and carrots seemed fresh enough, but both were rather tasteless as well. The celery actually dominated the flavor of the dish, and that's not saying much. It was essentially flavorless and uninspired. So I picked out the water chestnuts and some of the soggy baby corn and ate that, along with a bit of rice and chicken. But I wasn't enjoying it. It had no flavor, despite being listed on their menu as spicy. I'm known for being a big eater who does not waste food, and one who has an ironclad gut, but this stuff was not something that even I wanted to ingest as food. I tossed the rest of the wontons and 2/3 of my entree into the bin. No.1 was a bit more like No. 2 in my book.

I see the negative reviews. Those must be for dishes I never order. I always enjoy what I get and the staff is the friendliest of any Chinese restaurant in Milwaukee. Try the Chicken & Broccoli. That is what I get. And I challenge you to not like the staff.

Just moved to the area. My children and I were looking forward to chinese takeout and movie for Friday night. I have to say this have to be the worse Chinese food we had ever ate. My 7 y/o loves fried rice so much that she could eat the whole order back in the east but not tonight. She ate 1 spoon of pork fried rice and a wing then she was done. My son, tasted the lomein the proceed to get cereal for dinner. The fried rice had no favor and no egg. The lomein was so soggy and mushy that the noodles broke when picking up with the fork. We dumped all the whole order and joined my son to eat cereal.

I live very close to Huan-Xi, and sometimes it's just a little too...good. It still resembles fresh ingredients, and while that's generally a good thing, it doesn't always hit the spot. Sometimes I just need a crunchy, greasy, deep fried pile of foodstuff, and this is where No. 1 excels. The General Tso's tofu is exactly what I want when my hangover cries out for something deep fried and covered in sauce. Nice portions too. Even hungover and ravenous, I still usually have a meal or two leftover. If I'm ordering solo, I meet the $10 delivery minimum with the veggie egg rolls, which taste exactly like egg rolls. I like them with a 2:1 mixture of duck sauce and mustard, but feel free to experiment with duck, mustard, and soy sauce. Your takeout containers will be swimming in packets of all three. Delivery isn't the quickest, but it's very friendly. Maybe that friendliness makes them slower, but I honestly don't mind. The amicable service is a big part of why I gave four stars instead of three. I will warn against the mock-meat. I like plenty of meat substitutes, but their mock chicken is serious frankenfood. I was expecting something at least a bit like the very tasty mock duck I've had in MPLS area Chinese restaurants, but instead I got weird balls of fibrous protein. It was still edible enough thanks to tasty sauce, but very tough and chewy and stuck in my teeth like nothing else. I have never had to floss so vigorously in my life.

I don't know what people are expecting out of a Chinese takeout place, but I love this place. It's cheap, and delicious. If you want something classy, there are a ton of other options. If you want greasy takeout Chinese, this is your place. Check out the General Tso's chicken. It's greasy and great. If you don't like the crab rangoon, order a can of soda with your dinner special instead.

Okay I take back my previous review. I now find No 1 in Shorewood gross. Today's order included a hair in my soup and some kind of nasty mystery meat sweet and sour pork. Guess everyone else was right. Yuck.

Ok so it's not 5 stars but get real not a 1 star spot. My food was better than most Chinese delivery in Milwaukee. Almost didn't order because if the low rating...

Seriously people? This is a descent delivery place that's pretty cheap for Chinese. If you are expecting molecular gastronomy go somewhere else.

I used to live a block away from this place so, out of desperation, I would eat there. Almost every experience has been godawful. The last time I ate there, I wound up with a stomachache so bad, I was close to puking. Plus, when I tried the vegetarian "meat" dishes, I couldn't tell what the heck I was eating. Was it fake meat? Or was it something else? Sometimes it's better not to know. Anyway, I wouldn't recommend this even to my worst enemy. Avoid.

They deliver, they're quite reliable with the delivery, but foodwise? Greasy. I can't think of any other adjective besides greasy for this place. The fried rice was greasy, the lo mein was greasy, the crab rangoons (why I even bothered to eat that abomination, who knows) was... well, you get the idea. I've ordered some other items from them before and I can say the same thing over and over again. Except that I was fine the first time I ate their stuff, but the second time? Major diarrhea.

Yuck. We live within walking distance of No 1 Chinese. It is the only place to get food at 930 at night thats nearby, and we still never eat there. Because of the convenient location, I wanted to like No. 1 so much that I gave it three tries - all of which were terrible. Walking into the restaurant is already an off-putting experience. Theres always a weird smell. We ordered different dishes each time, and each time the food was absolutely terrible. All of the food was greasy and gross. The meat seemed sketchy - none of the food appetizing or tasted good. I really can't think of anything good about this place.

We live within a couple of miles of no 1, and have eaten their food a few times. Very good taste and quality of meat. We had tried another place just south of no 1 on oakland, and that was one of the worst restaurants we have ever been, no kidding! The meat was terrible, and the taste was similar to terpentine, very difficult to stomach. No 1 is much better, thank goodness there is a decent Chinese joint relatively nearby.
