Having just moved here from the West, we have been trying out some of the different restaurants based on the Yelp reviews. I was jonesing for some wings and didn't want to drive North to the wild wings, and after reading the other reviews about the wings and Italian fries I figured we should give them a try... The wings, uh yeah, not a fan at all. No real flavor and over cooked to the point that I had to keep dipping them in to the blue cheese just so they wouldn't be so dry. I'm sure there are good wings in the midwest and hopefully in Wausau, I just haven't found them yet. The Italian fries, I feel like I just wasted $10 on a full order for the family...the cheese was alright (but they didn't make the cheese sadly) and the dough/crust it was served on was overcooked and had to be torn with my teeth just to get a bite. I realize this is a pizza restaurant and I didn't order pizza, so I'll at least give it 2 stars and not 1 star since I haven't tried any of their pizzas.

Papillon's may be passed up by Wausau newcomers because of its odd location. One word, don't! I can't speak to their salads, burgers, or other menu items. If you're a true Wausauoain, you know there is only one thing you need on the menu. Italian fries with cheese! Holy mother of god!! These creations of god are literally smothered with what seems like 10 lbs of cheese. You have to slice the cheese stringing off each piece you pick up. They come wrapped in tin foil when you order take out. No need for anything fancy, just pure goodness! Order their Italian cheese fries w/ cheese and be converted today!

We have spent so much money on bad food in the 2 years we've lived here and are reluctant to dine at new places. However we were starving and decided a hot pizza pie sounded good. We ordered chicken wings and the House Special pizza. We were offered the choice of fresh or canned mushrooms which I thought was odd. Why not just use fresh all the time? Our wings arrived quickly and were delicious. I could make a meal on the wings alone. Our pizza arrived just as we finished our wings and I must say I was in pizza heaven. The crust was the perfect thickness, thin but not too thin. Just the right amount of toppings and a ton o' cheese. We had leftovers for breakfast the next day. Our server Tim did a wonderful job taking care of us so all in all it was a wonderful dining experience. We'll be going back soon.

Having grown up in the area, I cannot even guess how many times I have been to Papillion's. Lets just say I've been enjoying their food since I was a braces-wearing, angst-filled pre-teen with big bangs..... The waitstaff is always nice. Its a family-and- wallet-friendly restaurant. The pizzas and Italian fries are best! There are lots of seating options, video games for the kids and a truly mammoth-sized T.V. for the sports fan(s) in your dining party. Finally, don't forget to check out the wall of celebrity photos when you pay your bill!

First, I'd like to say that I wouldn't even give 1 star. We have ordered from Papillon's several times over the past few years, which many years ago did actually have good food.... my 1st time eating there was about 20 years ago and I remember their chimichanga was amazing! The last 2 times have been less than desirable. Our previous order last year consisted of small portions of just about everything, which were for the most part dry, cold, or soggy. My daughter had also ordered one of the salads as a wrap (which is an option on their menu), but guess what.... we got the salad. Against our better judgement, and thinking maybe our last order was just because of an "off" day for the restaurant, we ordered again today. BIG mistake!! Here is how our food order was tonight (by delivery): The patty melt, which was ordered medium well, was burned black and very small, only had 3 pieces of fried onion (yes, only 3!), and only filled maybe 2/3 of the bread. I could not even eat it because it was so burned and tasted awful. The mozzarella squares were 5 small chewy pieces, which should not cost even close to $6.49. We've had similar mozzarella sticks from other restaurants for the same price which were more than twice as much food as that, and actually tasted good. The chicken wings were dry, and the price doesn't even include a dipping sauce... that is extra!! The gyro had 4 very small, thin pieces of meat, and was mostly tomato and lettuce. All of the french fries with our orders were a very small amount (costing an extra $1.29 per order because they're not even included with sandwiches) and soggy, and I had to actually re-fry all of them just so we could eat them. They have a breaded, fried chicken sandwich on their menu, but then find out after ordering that they don't make that. My son had wanted this specific sandwich, not grilled, so I had to bread it and fry it myself for him. If Papillon's had any type of decent customer service, they would have taken the extra 2 or 3 minutes to make the sandwich the way that it was offered and the way that it was ordered. I ordered an extra ranch and 1000 island dressing, which states on the menu is $0.50/each, but was charged $1.50 for the 2 and did not even receive the ranch. I also requested ketchup packets and did not receive even one. For a food order (not including tax or tip) that cost $60.00, I am absolutely disappointed and disgusted. I wouldn't even have paid $10 for the terrible food that we received. Papillon's has really gone down hill, and I can say that after being utterly disappointed twice in a row, we will never order from there again.

The worst part was it took 15 min before anyone came to talk to us. But after that it was a pretty good experience. The food was good and our service was good as well.

Funny, like the last reviewer I first ate this pizza in probably 1977 before the Tornado of that year. I grew up in Northern IL, and would visit my Wausau relatives during the summer as a kid. I loved this pizza then!! I have since eaten pizza in dozens of Chicago restaurants, in New York, in Rome and many of the towns I have lived in across the US. Two years ago I was back up to Wausau and had to try this pizza and see if it was as good as my childhood memories (which I think seldom happens). But it was every bit as good as I recalled as a kid. Is it the best I have ever had? There is not a single best, but this is up there. I love certain stuffed spinach pizzas in Chicago, I really enjoy other New York Style places. But for this style of pizza, Papillon's is the best I have had. This is a good reason to visit the relatives in Wausau again!

I have been going here since the late 70's, since high school. I have lived in St. Louis for several years, and always make this a fist stop. First off, then pizza was, and is awesome. Tons of cheese. If you are looking for a skinny pizza with no flavor, try Sams. The Italian fries have evolved from a cheese laden pile of delicious dough, dripping with garlic butter, to the same, but without the dripping butter. Do yourself a favor, and order extra garlic butter on the side, and pour it on!

Let's see...how crappy is this place...please note the photo of their fish fry. I know, I know, they're a pizza place stupid, well I'm the idiot that got a fish fry too so let's rate the food: Fish Fry: F- Italian Fries: C (but really how hard are these to get right) Gyro: F+ Hamburger: D French Fries: F+ Ok so I think we all get the point that these folks can't seem to get basic food prepared in a palatable manner. Do yourself a favor go somewhere else. Do the community a favor, pray for this place to go out of business so we all can sleep a little better at night knowing they aren't serving food.

If I were sentenced to be executed, and was putting together the menu for my last meal, the first thing on the menu would be Italian Fries with Cheese from Papillion's!!! If I loved closer than four hours drive away, I might eat them every day! They're "should be illegal" delicious!

I'm really surprised by the reviews. I get that people certainly vary on pizza and I suppose I could see how some would like the pizza at Papillon, but I found it to be mediocre, at best. We went with mushroom pizza and I don't think it is unreasonable to expect that the pizza will be topped with FRESH, not disgusting canned, mushrooms. Totally ruined the pizza. The Italian fries were pretty good, a bit thicker than I like, but tasty enough. Service was SLLLLOOOOW and non existent much of the time and it wasn't very busy at all. I waited a good 10 minutes up at the bar while my husband and daughter headed to the car to pay for the bill. I was trying to get out of there our infant daughter was fussy... I feel bad, but we were so excited to try this place based on the reviews and were left just so very very underwhelmed.

The cheese fries are simply the best. I mean, tons and tons of mozzarella melted onto doughy pizza crust... what's not to like? (...unless you're watching your cholesterol.) The rest of the menu isn't bad... a few disappointments (chicken wings, dumpling soup), a few happy surprises (BBQ chicken pizza). If it's your first time ... get the cheese fries.

I really enjoy this place. I agree that the location is a little less than ideal and likely results in being passed up by people who are not from the area. However, they do have great food! They have a huge variety of food, from Italian to Mexican. And of course the main attraction: Italians fries with cheese! Yum! They also have a variety of specialty drinks such as pina coladas and grasshoppers. During the holidays they have a special menu of hot alcoholic drinks!
