Great food, especially the breakfast. Old diner experience, the kids loved sitting on the swivel stools at the counter. The staff is friendly and welcoming.

The chili is delicious!! Reuben is great too! Enjoyed sitting at the counter and chatting with the cook. Must try if you like the small diner atmosphere and food.

Get the Meatloaf Sandwich. It will change your life. Or at least make your day.

These folks are really good at making eggs, if the cook is the guy pictured on the front of the menu you're in for a treat. The other guy is really good too. The chicken fried steak and eggs was amazing, the sunny side up eggs were cooked perfectly, and the chicken fried steak was crispy and delicious with good gravy. Also, the coffee is definitely drinkable.

Great breakfast and the prices are killer. Great wait staff and clean for a diner atmosphere. Beats ihop no question.

Yes, it's "just" a diner, but the food is prepared with real care and attention, right in front of you--the flat top grill is right behind the counter. The grill cook slices the tomato to order for your burger, the waitress knows just what the regulars want, and the photo on the wall is of the very same diner in 1955. Bypass the chains and stop into a place that still does it old-school. Good breakfast, good lunch and a great tradition.

This is the no frills little diner I've been searching for in this area! I came here for my birthday with a friend for breakfast. The waitress was so sweet and attentive, didn't rush us at all as we were catching up talking, happily had my eggs cooked medium-well on my eggs benedict and even checked back to make sure they were done how I requested!

I was here with my daughter (16) on March 3, 2012. We wisely decided to go "into town" from Cascade Mountain Ski Area, for lunch. At Portage Cafe, we spent $17 for two awesome Stuffed Grilled Cheeses (you decide - fries or chips, coleslaw or cottage cheese), coffee, AND the tip. Skinny storefront location, but nice booths and a big counter. Free newspapers spread out on the counter when you walk in. Instant "Hi! Have a seat and I'll be right with you!" when you walk in the door. Best part - besides the food - was when my kids says, "You mean you can just leave some money on the table and walk out the door?"

Excellent little hole in the wall. Fantastic service. Great temperature and cheap cheap cheap prices. Had a real ham and cheese omelette for 4.50 (no diced, all thick slabs). Family's meals also received similar praise!

Between seeing the chef scratch his head before putting the cheese on my burger and the guy who came in, bought a coke so he could use the bathroom but before leaving announced to the room "Im gonna wait till next week to get my chemo, then come and puke in all the bathrooms on this block (except here)" I'd say this is pretty good for a Portage lunch experience.

Had the veggie omelet. Delicious. Sat at the counter. Love this kind of place where you can watch the cook prepare your meal right behind the counter.

I really enjoyed the small town vibe. The quesadilla and the chili were delicious. The service was very good and the people are friendly. Portage is a lovely town.

My family stopped by for breakfast. French toast was very good and my wife's omelet was delicious. Bacon was a little over done but good biscuits & gravy. Nice old fashion diner. Waitress was busy but got things done.

My hubby and I came here for a quick lunch. I ordered a patty melt which came with a pickle spear and chips. It was okay. The bread was a little too burnt for my liking but the patty, cheese, and grilled onions were not bad. My hubby got a pizza burger with chips and a pickle spear. It was a patty with marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese. He said he liked it! We were the only customers at the time (Saturday at 12:30) so our food came out really quick, the server was really nice, and we got in and out quickly. I knew the chef was the owner because the menu cover had a pic of the owner which I have never seen before so I found it interesting. The place is located in downtown portage and was a typical cozy diner.

This is a small restaurant that doesn't look like much but has great food. They had a Friday fish fry that was really good. Their French fries were the best we have in a long time. Short drive off interstate well worth it. We will be back.

A local, greasy spoon, untouched by time, charming in its authenticity and honesty. Plus, the food was pretty dang good! The carpet, booths, counter... they all appear to be OG. Don't let this deter you if you don't find this charming; yes, the carpet is dingy, yes the counter is a particular hue of orange that words can't adequately describe... but it's so authentic it hurts. It's not easy to find places like this just anywhere, people. (Wisconsin: the middle.) Our server? The quintessential middle-aged woman with a scratchy voice, a boisterous demeanor, and a "What'll ya have honey?" attentiveness, which is to say that she was attentive in a fantastic way. She took care of the entire semi-full restaurant like an efficiency expert while one singular cook rocked all the orders as well as the dishes. This dynamic duo seemed to genuinely care about patrons' opinions on the food as well as their needs. So small-town homey. (Charming. I told you.) The food: one could note the oil just pooling on a flatop grill behind the diner counter itself. This spot's a greasy spoon no question, but the food was super solid and quite well-done. My french toast was delicious, the half-order of biscuits and gravy were decadent, peppery, and sinful as we expected, and L's hash browns/omelette were super-great, too. Nothing fancy, nothing special, but solidly executed and just what we were after. If you're looking for a solid, affordable breakfast in the middle of Wisconsin off 94 or 39, this is as good and local as it gets. Portage Cafe, I totally dig you!

The meatloaf sandwich was out of this world fantastic. Not healthy but absolutely delicious. My husband had the chili and thoroughly enjoyed it. The prices are great, service was quick ... what a great place!

The waitress was really busy but she did a good job keeping up with all the tables. The prices were pretty decent and the food was good. Ordered the banana pancakes with bacon and hash-browns. The hash-browns could have been a little crispier but the bacon and pancakes were perfect. Their coffee was just average. Overall no complaints. May go back again.

About as perfect a diner as you could ask for in this life. The owner is at the flat top cooking, and the waitress has coffee ready and a friendly smile. Great breakfast.
