Fantastic food and friendly staff. As noted by other reviewers, the decor leaves a little to be desired, but it wasn't terrible. Same entree choices as most strip mall Chinese joints, but MUCH better quality. The sesame chicken and sweet and sour chicken were both all white meat and fried to perfection. Would definitely return.

It's pretty good "bad Chinese food." The lunch specials are ridiculous cheap. Meat, rice, egg roll, soup and fortune cookie for south of 5 bucks. I usually get the General Tso's chicken which is always pretty good. Overall the price is really good for lunch, but food's just average. Service is sometimes lacking--I had a waitress listening to music through an ear bud once. Generally service is friendly though.

When you pull up and walk into this place, you'll be like, "there's no way I'm at the right place". It's in an unassuming storefront with cliche Chinese restaurant decorations circa 1990. It's pretty dumpy. DO NOT LET THIS SCARE YOU OFF. The food at this joint is freaking amazing I've lived in Washington, DC and South Jersey and unlike most midwest food, this place compares to the better Chinese food restaurants in DC, Philly & NY. IMO the shining star of their menu is their hot & sour soup. It's just perfect. My only complaints other than the decor is that they are closed on Sunday & that they do not deliver. Their staff are courteous & fun, and always recognize a regular. In Portage the dining options are few & far between if you don't want fries with that. There is another oriental food place over by Staples that is newer & brighter but their food cannot compare to Cathay Garden. Don't be swayed. :)

I have eaten here for years and never leave disappointed. The portions are huge and the price is right! Food is flavorful and service is normally fast and when you have kids you need food fast!

I have had chinese everywhere. By far the service, portions, flavors, and prices are A M A Z I N G!!!! If you are in Portage don't eat anywhere else! I cant say enough good things about this place, for sure a Happy Accident we stopped in while passing through! We had the Happy Family and Tso's Chicken. While the decor is simple and old school...I come for the food...so glad I found this gem Edit: went again this evening 11/17/2012 Busy on a saturady night...but still excellent

I have yet to find another Chinese restaurant as good as Cathay Garden. The food has always been consistently good. Great portions, I've always gone for lunch as you get large portions for less. Whether your traveling through or in town I'd say stop by Cathay Garden you definitely won't be disappointed. .

My 16-year-old daughter and I went to Cathay Garden for dinner on Saturday, March 3, 2012 - we were snowboarding at Cascade Mountain for the weekend. I had looked up some reviews of local restaurants before our trip, found this one, and remembered it. Both of us LOVE the food from our local Ming Toy (in Beach Park, IL), and we've been horribly disappointed in the past when trying out different Chinese restaurants. Yes...every one is different, and we all have our preferences. Cathay Garden was excellent! Menu was extensive (as expected), everything explained well enough, the usual indicators about spiciness. Prices very reasonable - we ended up with enough food for 4 people, plus two egg rolls, and our bill was about $22 (no alcohol). Super friendly waiter - never forgot about us even though the place was pretty busy with large-ish groups. No one tried to hurry us out (even though our bill was not going to be large). Diner-ish atmosphere, but nice little touches. We ordered the Governor's Beef (similar to Kung Pao) and the General Tso's Chicken. Both listed as "spicy" and we were not disappointed! Flavor and tenderness of the meat - wonderful. Vegetables - nice and crisp. Spiciness - perfect. Temperature - piping hot (as in, wait at least a minute if you can stand to). Zero complaints. If you're looking for expensive atmosphere, maybe skip anything in Portage. If you're looking for the "I can't stop eating this even though I'm stuffed!" experience, go to Cathay.

We entered the restaurant salivating for the vegetable egg foo yong. We learned that is was served with egg rolls and egg drop soup. Since we're vegetarians we asked the server if there was chicken stock in the soup. The server assured us that there was no chicken in it. When tasted we realized it had chicken in it. We asked the hostess if that were so and she said yes and we sent it back. The server returned saying there was chicken in the sauce and he said he could serve it on the side. We again asked the hostess if there indeed was chicken or beef in the the gravy. She called her boss who wasn't sure. We then asked to order something else. The Hostess was okay with that. When we returned to our table we heard a lot of loud voices in the kitchen in Chinese. The server came out yelling at us to pay for our egg rolls. We told him we would like to order something else and he said you pay for your egg rolls and tea and leave! We went back to the Hostess to pay and explain that we were being kicked out of the restaurant for being vegetarian. She couldn't understand that and again called someone. However, we decided to leave.

yeah, that's right, 5 stars! when we lived in the area this was our favorite place for Chinese. in fact, it was one of our favorite restaurants, period. out of all the Chinese restaurants I've eaten in, nothing compares to this place, and whenever we are in the area we make a point to eat here. why 5 stars? 2 main reasons: everything is really, really good. and, it's consistent. the food here is always good. fresh, hot, full of flavor. the service is always good. lately it seems there is only one server, so if he's busy you might not get the attention you think you should get, but he'll take care of you, you won't feel like you were forgotten. my only minor complaint is that dishes that are labeled "spicy" are not, in my opinion, spicy at all. however, this is my experience with every restaurant. I like heat, so I usually ask for a dish of hot peppers to add to my food. not really a complaint, just a suggestion to you if you decide to eat here and like your food spicy. also, the prices simply can't be beat. we usually eat here for lunch and order from the lunch specials. I always have the same thing: three delicacies sauté, a combination of beef, chicken, shrimp, broccoli and carrots in a spicy brown sauce. it comes with fried rice, an egg roll and either hot and sour or egg drop soup. it is the absolute most expensive item on the lunch menu, and it costs $5.25! did I mention that, besides being cheap, it's also delicious? and please ignore any nonsense about the place being dirty. it isn't. here's the story: many years ago this was a restaurant called "Brunt's Café." it was a simple, American diner, nothing even remotely fancy. the place is pretty much the same today, despite the change in menu. some Chinese décor has been put up, but that's about it. without that, it still feels like a small "greasy spoon" type of restaurant. i'm fine with that, for all the reasons listed above. give this place a try, you'll be glad you did!

Best Chinese I ever had. I live in Milwaukee and will definitely do the drive back. For under $30 the 2 of us we could have easily fed four people.

Best Chinese food in the area. Legitimate and most authentic food cooked by best Chinese chefs in the vicinity of Dells, Baraboo and Portage

Even after moving away and trying Chinese food in much larger cities, Cathay Garden can compete with most other Chinese restaurants on the basis of their food. Their orange beef remains the best I've ever had. I still enjoy it occasionally when I'm back home. Service is usually good, especially by Chinese restaurant standards. The décor is very outdated, but let's be honest...who goes to a restaurant in a town the size or Portage for the atmosphere? It's easily overlooked, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to anyone looking for a great place to eat in Portage.
