omrocheesehouse.com * Update: The staff seems friendlier. maybe all of the negative reviews have been taken to heart. Because of these changes I support the business much more often. I will everyone posted if this changes. Before I write the full summary I want to say something positive about the "New" Colonial cheese House, it is clean and organized. The Cedar Crest Ice cream is a great reason to keep coming, nothing beats a hand scooped Cold Treat. They have Gluten Free options, but you must be knowledgeable about which types, the staff and owner is NOT (see below). Remember to ask for the server to rinse the scoop between types. They have a few varieties of Chocolates and candies. They carry a good selection of cheeses, from everyday types to harder to find chunks. A large parking lot and it is easily accessible. The negatives? There are no public bathrooms; I can't blame them for this there would be no good access for the public. The Cheese house is now owned and operated by Keith and Jennifer Jordan. Since the new regime has been in place our experiences have been poor. The first time we entered after the change we were ordering ice cream, my partner has Celiacs sprue this is a disease and any gluten he ingests makes him seriously ill. We are versed on which ice-cream is gluten free as we have been in contact directly with cedar crest the company. We requested the server wash the scoop before dishing his order as not to cross contaminate because of gluten issues. Jennifer (the owner) had been standing near She jumped loudly into the conversation and exclaimed "None of the ice-cream is gluten free!" We assured her they were and we were aware of the type. She argued with us, after several attempts of us trying to explain which of the types SHE was selling were acceptable we gave up. She was not listening to us (her customers) and had no intention of hearing us at all. We left that day lamenting over the loss of the cheese house we knew and chuckling over the introduction we just had to the new owner and she desperately needed to be "right" at all costs. We have encountered staff from when the previous owners (Penny and Herbie) ran the place. They have all approached us and told the same tale without any prompting. They tried to work with the new owners but found it extremely difficult (several calling the work environment hostile and abuse) to work with the new owner particularly Jennifer. WE have gone into the Cheese house several times since then, every time the owner was present there was inevitable conflict with a customer or one of her staff, Her need to be correct and in charge overwhelming others. Our last visit was interesting, my partner picked up a cheeseburger and cheesy garlic bread for one of our daughters. The combo had always been a favorite "Before". The food was mediocre at best. The burger was flat overdone, dry and not seasoned. The bun, dry, old and tasteless. The garlic cheese bread was so salty you could taste nothing else. The French (?) bread they used was again, old and dry. The most interesting part of the transaction was at check out, (the owner was NOT present) my partner wanting to leave a tip for the woman asked for her to break a 5, she took it, grabbed 5 ones, turned around and asked him for a 5. He said he had already given it to her, she said no. He pointed out the cameras, suggested she view the one covering the cash register. She said no, you didn't give me a 5. He suggested she count the register (there was no one else in the store) and would fine she was 5 over, she said no, he didn't give her a 5. He decided it wasn't worth the problem, he was going to tip her anyway (Just not that much) as he was leaving he suggested she take his cell phone number so she could call him once she cashed out after close and notify him of the 5. She said no, he didn't give her a 5. Maybe the owner's right-fighting has contaminated the staff? Oh how I/we miss Penny and the crew. Bright Shining faces, friendly non argumentative. If there was an issue with anything they fixed it with a smile on their face and a Hello how are you when customers came in. That Woman and her employees were wonderful representatives of this warm community.
