Excellent Indian Food in Oconomowoc! Funny thing is, who would expect to find that in Oconomowoc? They brought out a plate of chips and sauces which were all unique and got us ready to enjoy the upcoming food. We had the chicken tandoori and garlic naan. Both were better than expected and quite good. We did get it mild to get a feel for their spice levels and it was quite mild though flavorful. Next time we'll bump it up a notch. Wait staff was very attentive and kept drinks fresh. It was a good atmosphere and the inside is very nicely done which is surprising when you look at the outside. Overall, would definitely go back.

We ordered Lamb Biriyani, veg biriyani and Gobi Manchurian for our new year's party and everyone loved it. Chef Bhaskar did a great job and Ram is so customer friendly! You should also try the Mughlai Lamb.

The food is incredible at Mantra! Dishes are prepared to perfection. Very friendly and pleasant staff. This is yet another incredible restaurant that call Oconomowoc home! Best Indian in SE Wisconsin... Nothing even close in Madison or Milwaukee. We have dined in and out, from a table of 2-14, had the buffet, and dined with kids....everything the same, hot, fresh, and delectable. The only down side about mantra, yet it has not been issue for us yet, is that seating is limited, and the buffet is SO popular that they have a hard time keeping up with demand... But they do!

Wonderful blend of spices, great menu and excellent service. Cook came out to greet us and ask our input on the food. Much pride and hospitality.

If I were to rate this among all Indian restaurants in Milwaukee area, I would give this 5 Stars.. It is far from Milwaukee city but it might actually be worth a trip. I am of Indian origina and know very well, about Indian food and also am a fairly good cook of Indian food. I have tried Mantra a few times.. For buffet and ala carte dining. Typically, I dislike and avoid buffets because the food is very oily in buffet dishes. If you are not calorie concious, you might enjoy their buffet. I liked their fried fish pieces in the buffet. Ala carte dishes of lamb curry etc were quite good. Most of the Indian restaurants in the city serve north Indian food - many of their sauces like "butter chicken" are cream based. While some cream based dishes are quite delicious, typically, I dislike them - it is just a personal choice. Mantra has both northern and southern type of dishes. I would highly recommend Mantra.

Wow, authentic Indian cuisine in downtown Oconomowoc. Who would've thunk? Wide selection and relatively inexpensive for the real thing. If live local and haven't tried it yet, you're in for a treat.

Wow. I can honestly say this is some of the best food I've ever had. I have tried the Chicken Curry and I absolutely love it. The flavors are indescribably amazing. The meat is cooked to perfection. This food practically melts in your mouth. Try it over the basmati or jasmine rice (I'm not sure which it is). The food here is obviously made with loving care. I've also tried the Beef Curry, again made with loving care and cooked to perfection, flawless. I savored every bite. Different than the Chicken Curry but every bit just as good. This is not a buffet so each dish is prepared to order. The service here is attentive and prompt as well as friendly and personable. They will ask how spicy you like it and prepare it accordingly. They bring you an appetizer to start, which is free, and its almost like an Indian cracker with some Mint and Onion Chutneys and a Tamarind sauce. Very delicious. I suggest you try the Garlic Nan bread or the Aloo Nan which has potatoes and peas in it, again, delicious. I have also tried the Chicken Tikka which comes on a sizzling platter and served with rice and a creamy tomato and coriander sauce that will blow you away. Not to mention the Chicken Pakora which is a breaded and deep fried appetizer. Careful don't eat too many appetizers though because the main dishes are going to want all the attention. The Bollywood movies playing on the television make it that much more authentic. This place is the real deal right there in Oconomowoc so if you're in the area you have to try it. I can't say enough good things about Mantra, I'll be going back there very soon indeed.

I came to know about this restaurant at a Birthday party..since the food they got from here is so tasty. Since then we are regular customer to Mantra. We are 16 miles away..but this is not far to go for a tasty Indian food we love. Especially panneer butter masala..and goat pepper fry.

So, it has been more than a year and half since my first meal at Mantra and it continues to be a great place to eat. As a matter of fact I now give it 5 stars. The staff is always kind and jovial to us. They have even managed to capture the heart of my daughter and her friends. We look forward to our next visit. We always spread the good word when it comes to eating at Mantra.

Fantastic and consistent food. Highlights include the goat curry, mixed tandoori. Lunch specials are very large and a little pricy, but delicious.

Overview: Very good food. Reasonable prices. Modest portions. Attentive service. Cozy, no frills dining room. Street parking. We tried Chicken Curry, Tikka Masala, Rogan Josh, Lamb with Mango, Navratan Korma, two other dishes plus plain naan. The waiter asks for your preferred level of spice (mild, medium, or hot). Entrees are served with white Basmati Rice (perfectly cooked). Fresh bread is a modest additional charge and well worth it. Portion sizes are modest by American standards. All food was excellent. The staff were courteous and professional. Servers were attentive and helpful. Food service wait time was average for a made-to-order kitchen. This is a cozy boutique restaurant with few tables and booths. The dining room was very clean, however, vacated tables were sprayed with an ammonia cleaner that disrupted the exotic spiced perfume of the dining room. Street parking only. Restrooms are located outside the restaurant, at the end of the common hallway in the building. Not wheelchair accessible. Their website seems to be offline at the moment.

My wife is vegetarian, and is very in tune with what good Indian food is. I've liked everything these guys have made for me. I would recommend this place to anyone, and in the month since we found it, we've eaten there 4 times. It is seriously good Indian food.

  • Rebecca L.

The food was delicious! Every time I come to visit my family I request an Indian food night. Last time we shared Shahi Panner, Chana Masala, and Chicken Tikka Masala with garlic Naan. All ordered medium spicy. Everyone was extremely pleased. I hope they stay in business so that I can eat delicious food when I head back to Wisconsin to visit!

  • Todd B.

Very authentic Indian food. I came here with an Indian friend (who comes here very regularly). He loves the food. I recommend the lamb masala...it is everything that I like about Indian food. The dish was warming, comforting, and stretched the palate with all the traditional Indian spices. The lamb is tender and well balanced. Do not leave without having the garlic naan. It is amazingly good (and a steal at $2.50). Waitstaff is friendly and ambiance is average. Prices are fair. Portions are adequate. $27 for two entrees, two apps...tip not included. Had enough leftovers for a second meal.

This was the first time we visited this restaurant. The restaurant was full and with only 2 waiters to attend to it it took a wile for our order to be taken by our waiter. Besides that the food was very good in nice portions and a great Indian taste

Delicious food made fresh! The chicken spinach vindaloo is amazing and I love all of the vegetable dishes as well! Definitely the best Indian food in Waukesha county!

We've eaten at Mantra for the first time ever and were very presently surprised with the quality and freshness of food. We went there for dinner and ordered off the menu. We chose chicken briyani for kids to share and it was the best flavor briyani that I've had anywhere in milwaukee and burbs area. The aloo gobi had awesome flavor but it was not spicy enough for me. I complemented the chef for the great food and mentioned the spice level. He came over to our table to ensure we were satisfied and offered to make me my dish spicier to take home and compare. He went on to explained how too spicy can take away from the other flavors. I was aware of that already but the confidence that the chef had when explaining his craft made me appreciate his care that he puts into the food he makes. A+ there. Wife's shrimp jalfrezi was perfect in every way including the spice level requested. Naan and chapati tasted fresh made and very good. Staff was very nice and welcoming although maybe a bit fresh in the service business as we were not offered/asked if we wanted a desert. No biggie but with more experience they should round that out a bit. As far as the locale, it is a small place that may use some more decor but it was very clean and pleasant smelling. With some nice tasteful decoration they can make it into a nice intimate restaurant. We are all excited to go back again soon ;)

We really enjoyed our experience! Food was awesome. Terrific prices. Clean atmosphere. Awesome flavors!

Mantra is definitely the best Indian food I've ever had, anywhere. Absolutely everything is great, but personal favorites are both the chicken and the beef tikka masala, and the chicken 65 for an appetizer is a must. Mantra also has the best garlic naan you could ever hope to have. They've never gotten any part of our order wrong, and the prices are very reasonable, too. The dining area is small, but on the rare occasion we've had to wait, it hasn't been more than 10 minutes or so -- But for how great the food is, we'd gladly wait much longer if we had to.

Five stars is reserved for something special. I really liked this place and think it's special. First and foremost it's super challenging to find an Indian restaurant in this neck of the woods. Kudos to the owners for opening this place here. It's located in a building with other things (kids play place amongst them). That may turn off some but if you look past that and try the food i think you will agree it's nirvana! We had the lunch specials. For a reasonable price you get a tasty and fragment lentil soup, a salad, a wide selection of entrees, rice and roti and dessert. We had butter chicken and lamb curry. Absolutely fantastic. Cooked perfect and spicy enough for me and not too spicy for wifey. Served in really cool looking casserole bowls the portions are HUGE. I can't remember the last time I left food. It was almost tragic but I was soooo full. Wifey had to smack my hand to make me say no Maas. Will definitely return the next time I'm up here.

I was thrilled to learn that Mantra had opened for business in Oconomowoc. Finally, I thought, something to eat in this town besides pizza and cheeseburgers. I agree that their menu is overpriced. Elsewhere, I've had excellent chicken tikka masala with basmati rice and garlic naan for no more than $12. At Mantra, the same meal racks up at about $20. They do offer a rare cuisine for the area, however, and have virtually no competition. If anything, the bill makes sense. To speak for the quality of the meat, I can say that I've had better. The chicken, in my experience, is typically dry. Next time I eat here, I'll probably opt for a vegetarian dish and see how that goes. Mantra is very punctual, and though I can only attest to the take-out, my order is always ready on time. Give this place a try. I know I'll be going back for more.

The food was absolutely wonderful once we got it. It almost seemed like they didn't want to serve us. Not sure what was going on. They were friendly when we saw them.

I had one of the best meals of my life here. I am a big fan of Indian food and eat it just about every chance I get. Mantra Indian Bistro is Exceptional. The food is authentic and of high quality. The ingredients they use are fresh and the flavors blend perfectly together. I had the Calamari appetizer to start and that was fantastic. Perfectly prepared. The complementary yellow lentil cracker/bread with 3 different sauces was amazing. I had the goat curry for my entrée. It was such a healthy portion that I was able to take some home for lunch the next day. Ram, our server was attentive, but not overly attentive. He came at just the right times and was very friendly and genuine. Thank you Mantra Indian Bistro for promoting exceptional taste and quality. I am so thankful and proud to have such a wonderful restaurant in Oconomowoc!!

Quick and inexpensive Indian food. I was the only one in there which was a surprise since the food was so good! Their lunch special comes with soup, a main entree, dessert and naan. I went quite out of the way to get here on my way home from Madison but it was totally worth it! I would happily stop here again. Down side is its hard to find on Main Street.

    (5)
  • Nick H.

We had the dinner for two. No food complaints at all. Will come back. Only complaint is that the servers seem new to the trade (forgot to ask if we wanted drinks right away, we had to wait at least 10 minutes for the check). Food was good enough though to overlook those problems....once.

  • Liz G.

We've eaten at Mantra at least 10 times since moving to Oconomowoc last year. The food is excellent (very spicy if you as for it hot) and the wait staff are attentive. We've also ordered carry out, which we've always been happy with. You can't make a bad choice at Mantra!

  • Melissa S.

Best Indian food in Wisconsin. Northern and southern cuisine. No dosas in case you are craving that. Great service and enough food to have left overs for lunch next day. Lamb dishes rocked. Don't forget to get a mango lassi to wash it all down. Naan is fresh and delicious. Rice dessert is cool. Lunch combos give you a lot of food for a great price.

Amazing... Everything. HIGHLY recommend! Chicken, soups, and naan are so flavorful and delicious.

  • Henry R.

I refuse to give the mantra any less that 5 stars because I love the food here. When I went I ordered the lamb vindaloo and asked for VERY SPICY. My friend ordered a chicken curry and he enjoyed it(it was his first curry ever.) The lamb vindaloo was spicy, but not as much as I was hoping. Still tasty. The only negative part of my mantra visit was when I initially arrived. My friend and I are both 19, and we felt like we did not exist in the eyes of the host. It took 20 minutes to be seated, but worth it. It was probably just because of our age, but it still impacted my experience negatively. I cannot argue, though, because I love having a proper indian that close to home.

I'm not an Indian connoisseur but I highly enjoyed the meal there. There spices tend to be a little weak though. The food took a little while to get but my water glass seemed to always be getting full, so the service was great! The waiter even gave us a plate of deep fried cauliflower on the house, great gesture and way to get people to try something new. I don't really like cauliflower but I enjoyed the plate he. gave us

Oh how it pains me to give just three stars... I L-O-V-E Indian food. I crave it. And I am ecstatic to see this regional food way out in my neck of the woods. And the menu has all my faves. Last night we ordered takeout from Mantra feeling confident all around based on other reviews, the menu, and the website. Their prices are reasonable, for sure. So we ordered. For me, there is a handful of Indian staples by which I measure such a restaurant. Last night's meal consisted of Vegetable Pakora, Butter Chicken, Chicken Tikka Masala, plain naan and raita. I could write a little about each, but my summary would get redundant. That is to say, everything was acceptable. Not "quite good" or "quite bad" in any regard. The pakora was a bit onion-heavy with the three chutneys that were good enough; the butter chicken and tikka masala both could've been more flavorful; the naan wasn't as light as I prefer; the raita was standard, very good. I would like to reiterate the fact that I'm excited to have an Indian restaurant in Oconomowoc. I will probably eat their food again, and happily. But for me, this was all just adequate.

I keep going to Mantra because I really do want it to be better. I really want to have a good Indian restaurant in Oconomowoc. So I keep trying it in hopes that my experience will get better. It just always falls short. I lived with a Bangladeshi family for a while in college and the food style is very similar. I grew to love Indian food and often seek out Indian restaurants when I'm missing my Auntie's cooking. Mantra is okay, but it's nothing great. It's disappointing that even if you order your food spicy, it's not. At all. My biggest complaint today was the service. I met a friend there who arrived before me. Once I got there, it took 10 minutes for the waiter to come and take our order. There were only two other tables there. Not cool. Once our order was taken, the service was constant - refilling water, taking empty plates, etc, but it would've been nice to be taken care of immediately. Sorry, Mantra. I really wish we could have this special relationship where you fulfill this need of mine. I'm just not feeling it. We can still be friends, but that's all.

I spent 7 (seven) years in India and this is the best Indian food I've had in the U.S. since coming back in '06. My wife has never been to India and is always begging me to go eat here - Mantra Indian Bistro. It's her favorite restaurant. (We're going tonight, but she doesn't know) Absolutely exceptional food. Every dish I've tried so far, about 5 different ones, have all been very tasty.. and the service is great.

I spent time in India in 2008, and having lunch here made me miss Bangalore! Lots of authentic, delicious food on the buffet, and great service, including lemon water. Welcome to Oconomowoc!

We have visited Mantra twice since it opened on November 30 and are so glad to have some great Indian food in Oconomowoc. We visited on their opening day and had the lunch buffet. It was a good mix of different hot and cold items including some favorites such as Chicken Tikka Masala, Vegetable Biryani, Beef Curry, and many others. They also offered samosas, garlic naan, plain naan, and a host of desserts such as mango ice cream, Kulfi, and rice pudding. All of the items, even though they were mild in spice were of great quality with very good flavors. Service was prompt and attentive, even for their first day. We went back for dinner and had a very good experience once again. Even though we ordered Chicken Tikka Masala as hot in spice, it came out rather mild. The Chicken Vindaloo was perfect in terms of flavor, spice level, and quality. The Spinach Pakora was unique and awesome!! Something new and different. The service continued to be prompt and very personable. Overall, we are so happy that we don't need to drive into Brookfield for average Indian food. I hope they do well!

Got it to go...quick, hot order correct. Ordered the Galic Naan, Somasa; Chicken Madras and Goat Curry. All were good. Good to see other options in the 5 O's.

First time visit tonight. Nice clean restaurant. The service was the best I have ever had. I'm not an expert on Indian food and my questions were answered politely and I didn't feel stupid. I had soup as an appetizer that was great. My husband has some potato pizza looking thing that was yummy. I had the hot chicken vegetable for my entre and it was just perfect. My husband had the medium chicken mushroom which was great. I will definitely go back for lunch sometime so we can try the buffet. Lovely restaurant!

  • Becky K.

Have eaten here twice since they opened, both times at the lunch buffet. The food was good, with different choices on the two different days. Wait staff seems to have worked out any issues because our service was fine. It is nice to have another choice of cuisine in the Oconomowoc area.

    (5)
  • Jenn S.

If it were based on friendliness of staff I would give this place 5 stars. The food was really good - the Tikka Masala I ordered was the beginning of one of the best I've had but, as previous reviewers stated, fell way short on heat - I asked for it hot and it was only "spicy". I think with the addition of some wines (they only serve a handful of beers), a good scrubbing of the interior space and a couple tweaks with the food, Mantra could rival Taste of India as a suburban Indian food destination.

I am not an expert on Indian food, but did find the dining experience on a recent Saturday night to be very good. The food was plentiful, flavorful and the service was excellent. I picked up a take out menu and will be sure to use it when I need something quick on a weeknight.

We visited here with family over the holidays and were impressed with the freshness and flavorful foods. It's always fun introducing people to Indian cuisine, and thankfully Mantra didn't disappoint. The service was fast and friendly. They even went out of their way and made us something that wasn't on the menu which was a nice touch. We're already looking forward to our next visit to Oconomowoc and dining again at Mantra!

  • Liz D.

It's great to have an Indian restaurant in a smaller town. The place has always been clean and the service friendly and helpful when I've visited. They recently stopped having the lunch buffet- it seemed like everyone coming in to dine was surprised by this change. Our party decided to each other something different and share. The food comes in bowls, so it's easy to share and not feel like you're eating off each other's plates! We all enjoyed our choices. You can order at your own spice level. I'd say they are careful not to overheat American palates, so if you are used to Indian food and like some spice, don't order mild. Really reasonable prices. The portions don't look huge when you order, but those bowls hold a lot!

I've been here twice so far and am excited to have Indian food in Oconomowoc. The food is consistently good and the staff are great. I like the naan (both plain and garlic) and the tandoori or mint chutneys. They have two buffet tables for main courses, one with standards that stay constant and one that changes. There is a second area for desserts such as flan or mango ice cream and salads/chutneys.

This is a tough review... My husband and I love Indian food and are regulars at Taste of India in Brookfield, so we were super excited when we heard an Indian restaurant opened up in Oconomowoc. We tried it out for the first time tonight, and while the food was very, very good, the service was beyond terrible. The staff is young and completely untrained. We still don't know who our server was - we had three to four people providing service, and only one of them actually checked on us during our meal. One waitress wandered around aimlessly, and when we tried to flag her down to order (after waiting for 20+ minutes), she simply waived at us and said someone would be with us in a minute. I wouldn't say the staff was unfriendly, but they didn't greet us, ask how we were doing or smile; they were completely flustered and didn't know how to manage the number of people in the restaurant. People waited at the door for a long time until someone was able to bus tables so they could sit down. We sat for 10 minutes without water or menus, and waited for an extremely long time before ordering. We would've walked out if the waiter hadn't finally arrived to take our order. We also waited forever to pay our bill (which was apparently an extremely difficult task for the wait staff). Like I said, the food was good. It's on par with Taste of India in terms of price and taste, and if they get their wait staff whipped into shape, we will be back.

I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet! We have been eating there since they opened on a pretty regular basis and the food has been stellar and consistent. I think this is the best Indian food in the Milwaukee metro area. We have ordered a ton of different things on the menu and everything has been well seasoned, with good layered flavors and high quality ingredients (veg, protein, et cetera). The prices are fair (which is a great surprise for the Lake Country area), the wait staff is incredibly nice and attentive, and the restaurant is clean and well taken care of. We dine is about equally as often as we carry out. The lunch specials are a great deal also.

Didnt have high hopes going in. It is near a fun zone and a bar, and a slightly odd decor, but a friend had heard it was good so we went on in. I've had Indian food all over the country, and this is in the top one or two easily in terms of the taste of the food. Unbelievably good! Good spice, great portions, polite staff. Would highly recommend the chicken tikka masala. Sign on door says bartender wanted, hope that means theyll have more drink options soon

  • Brad F.

Excellent! This place has a huge menu. I try to mix it up every time I go, and have never been disappointed. I recommend anything lamb or goat, but goat has not been available the last two times I have been in. My wife and kids always request "no spice", because even at mild, some dishes tend to have a little bite; I prefer full spice. Don't let the atmosphere throw you off, this is not a reflection of the food or service. This is a definite MUST TRY.

Stopped in for lunch. Good food, plentiful portions and fast service. Very good. This is a hidden gem in downtown Oconomowoc. Soup salad and dessert are included with combo meals. Mango Lassi is delicious and cools the palette.

Had a terrific late lunch here today. We had 2 vegetarian dishes; each had extremely different flavors and vegetables. Both were equally delicious. The reasonable lunch menu included soup (again so flavorful), salad, rice and naan besides the dish itself.

We have eaten at many Indian restaurants in metro Milwaukee. I previously lived in NJ for many years and you find many Indian dining options there. I have to say Mantra is among the better restaurants in that lot. In my opinion they are the best in metro Milwaukee. Nothing fancy about the place but they serve consistently good Indian entrees competently. Their service is great for the price range they operate in. Food is very flavorful. Others talk about the spice level here but I don't think you measure Indian food by how hot it is - the flavor is much more complex than that. Try the place - you will not be disappointed!

  • Gary H.

Visited last week. The breads are amazing and the food was quite good. I'm not real familiar with Indian foods and made the mistake of ordering a spicy dish....When cut with rice it was eatable but without the rice mixture I was really out of my depth with the spiciness. But, that's on me. My wife loved her dish and the presentation of the meals was unique. I was bummed to see only a few tables full and hope others can discover this place. Great food and it's nice to have a window seat so one can watch the bustling city of Oconomowoc outside. Will definitely return.

We have eaten here several times and the food is delicious! We love the chicken tikka masala and the beef vindaloo. Our 7 and 4 year olds also really enjoy eating here!
