This is one of the reasons I just love wandering Wisconsin; finding some totally legit BBQ in a little river town. Walk through the door and you're in a rural diner; all kinds of antiquery all over the place, and the menu board up on the wall behind the "Order Here" sign. Once you place and pay for your order, you go sit down until your waitress comes out with this plate of smoky nirvana and puts it in front of your lucky face, at which time you attack your personally-prepared pulled-pork wrap, savor the smoky goodness, and wallow in the sheer small-town-BBQness of it all. Seriously, you will get some awesome pulled pork and brisket here, you will spend time with some really great people, and you will cherish the memory of eating here for years. Get here early though, they close at 7 pm.

Food was okay at best. The brisket needed a lot of sauce in order to be flavorful and I had to take tums later. Owner was rude and grumpy and actually made us (my family) and another customer wait to complete her phone conversation before acknowledging us at the counter. Our drinks and part of the order were forgotten when the place was near empty. I am surprised to see the other positive reviews. Perhaps it was an off day?

THE REAL DEAL. The ribs are all we tried, but they don't need sauce. They were perfectly smoked to a lovely pink, the meat came off the bone very nicely (not falling off, but not stuck either) and they were SO tasty! Baked beans and potato salad were top notch, too. It's all homemade here... I will purposely look for this place every time we come back to the area!

The ribs are wonderful and consistently prepared. The ice cream is good, lots of choices and very reasonably priced. A great, hidden stop along the Great River Road. And, lots of stuff to look at while you eat - kinda like eating in a '50s drug store / flea market. Have to see it to understand. You will find at least one sign on the wall that reflects your thoughts.

Got here about 45 minutes before close on a saturday night - just enough time to have a beer and dinner. The beer was delicious - and cheap! I mean - $3 for a craft beer - can hardly beat it! The bbq was pretty great - maybe not the best ever - since we have been to some pretty legit places in the past, but it was definitely up there. Really good flavor, tender, etc. I would definitely recommend hitting it if you are in the area! Just short drive from Pepin and far better food choices (in our opinion!)

The constant stream of weekend bikers parked here indicated something good must be inside. Excellent fish. Fried but not oily and crispy to the touch. Next time I'd nix the bread and just go all in with an extra fillet. Pork wrap was awesome - tucks coleslaw in with the shredded pork. Great find!

I would recommend calling ahead to see if they are open... there could be a note on the door saying they are out. In my experience, 1 out of 3 visits were they actually open. They have great food, good price and atmosphere but should consider hiring more staff to be open during meal times.

Best barbecued meats and sides I have ever had. Beats any barbecue place that I have visited in Texas! Cozy hometown atmosphere is nice as well.

Long lines but moved quickly and food came out fast & fresh!! Large portions at great prices. Loved the regular and Carolina BBQ sauces on the table. Wanted ice cream but was so full I couldn't do it (and that's with 1/2 my wrap to take home). Also liked the cooler of soda pop options to accompany the lunch. Well done!!

My fiance and I drove the scenic trip down Highway 35 from Menomonie just to experience J&J BBQ. The restaurant itself is very unique because it's a combination general store, antique haven, and BBQ joint all in one. Atmosphere is definitely not lacking here! It is run by an elderly couple who are very nice. They refilled my Coke free of charge and chatted about their sauce for awhile too. Very nice down home country people. Have to love that kind of service. It took about 5 minutes and out came my shredded brisket sandwich. The beef by itself is not heavy on the smoke at all and it was quite dry, but that's not a bad thing. Their vinegar based BBQ sauce is right on the table to drench your brisket in. The thin and runny vinegar based sauce is mild and is the perfect compliment to their beef brisket. There is some fat on the brisket, but not too much even for me who hates bundles on fat on meat. My brisket came with baked beans that had a delicious and unique flavor and a boat load of french fries all for $7. What a deal! My fiance had the pork sandwich and she really enjoyed it. We'll come back for sure! However, I wouldn't go out of your way for J&J. It's good, but not "50 mile detour" good. However, if you're in Nelson, WI or nearby, stop by for some great Americana!

We have been slowly working our way through the menu... about four visits a month -- yes, it's THAT good. The Rib & Brisket combo is the obvious choice for those who can't decide. Both are excellent. Better than even expected. The smoked chicken is great, the brisket wrap is stuffed full of meat and cheddar cheese... but our newest addiction is the Saturday night special - the Brisket Burger. TWO third pound hamburger patties, wonderful-smokey brisket, and real cheddar cheese on a grilled roll. Between licking the juice drops off your arm, you will thank me for this recommendation! This giant burger with your choice of sides (awesome fries, as-good-as-mom's-potato salad, meaty baked beans, or cole slaw) for under $9 -- it feels like you're stealing from them. Jim and Laura are the nicest owners around, it's a great little restaurant filled to overflowing with knick-knacks and antiques. There's always something new to see. No matter how hard it is, save room for ice cream. You do not want to miss Tim's small-batch, locally made ice cream. Just walk in, go up to the counter and order the Brisket Burger and a single scoop Macinac Fudge cone -- seriously, you will STUFF yourself with GOODNESS for about $11. We're SO glad we found this place!

J & J Barbeque located in The Nelson General Store is some of the best barbeque that I have had on the Mississippi River, and definitely on the norther extent. Service is exceptional and the small town kind. My favorite is the BBQ pork sandwich with a healthy dose of tabasco and cole slaw which is a steal for $5.95. I have rode the motorcycle down Hwy 35 (The Great River Road) from St. Paul to Nelson just to get lunch here.

Best BBQ I've had in Wisconsin. Baby backs have excellent flavor. That and cheese curds is a excellent add on. Great place. I love small town bbqs that live up to the hype.

Hubby and I took a Valentine's Day drive down the Great River Road. This is my second time at J&J. This time I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, which is my go to. The pork was deliciously smoked and moist with no fatty pieces. The ciabatta bun it was served on was just ok - not toasted, pre-packaged. But, good bbq's not about the bun! The sides were above average. Bbq beans were smoky and sweet with a tiny kick - probably from their sauce. The creamy coleslaw was really good, too! Hubby got the ribs - his go to. They are 5-star!!! Definitely worth a stop for BBQ fans!

WE LOVE THIS PLACE! Everything on the menu is worth a try but we really like the chicken and rib combo. The prices are reasonable and service is fast. We have been known to make the hour drive just for this Q.

My husband and I plus two dear friends were taking one of our many 'road trips' where we meander from small town to small town Wisconsin. We stop at local watering holes along the way for a beverage and to get in a few games of 500. Lots of competition on these journeys - usually the men against the women. Anyway, yesterday we took one of our roadies and travelled down the Great Mississippi Road from Red Wing, MN to Winona, MN and then back up the Wisconsin side joining Hwy 35 just south of Fountain City. After several stops, we found ourselves in the town of Nelson, WI at the dinner hour. I checked with Yelp and found a couple watering holes that probably had pub grub. We decided to try Granpa's Saloon which is adjacent to J&J BBQ. You have to go through J&J's to get to Grandpa's Saloon and immediately on entering we noticed a great smoky BBQ aroma. There are several tables and chairs in that room with some BBQ sauces and other food items for sale, lots of kitschy memorabilia on shelves around the room. We walked on through and over to Grandpa's saloon where we ordered a drink and got out the cards. The bartender said that they were nearing the end of the BBQ supply for that day (they smoke all their own meats daily) and if we wanted to order a meal we should do that next door and bring it back. We walked over to check the menu and while we were pondering the options heard one patron say that 'the ribs were the best he'd ever had'! That sounded like pretty good praise so we decided to give it a try. I had the BBQ half chicken dinner, one of our group had the brisket, one had the combo brisket and ribs and another just the rib dinner. The dinners come with a choice of two sides, Baked Beans which were fantastic, sweet and smoky and loaded with pieces of brisket, French fries, cole slaw or potato salad. Grandpas looked like it had been recently remodeled or was a fairly new addition to the BBQ place. The ambience didn't blow you away - it was pretty down home. It had light pine on the lower half of the walls which was a nice WI touch. The bathroom was a one person which is A-OK. It was clean and nicely done with the light pine and ceramic tile. They also have some delicious looking Ice Cream in several flavors. We had seen several people happily slurping cones on our way in. But, if you are in the mood to head down the main street a bit you will come to Nelsons which is renowned for it's Ice Cream and is a destination in itself. I highly recommend this as a stop on your River Road Ramble. I would definitely like to get back there again.
