The fare is a lot like Lauredos... a full selection of tasty Mexican dishes. Burritos, enchiladas, tacos, enchiladas, etc. Reasonably priced, delicious fare. FINALLY Mt. Horeb has a good Mexican restaurant! The staff is friendly, the service is good, and the food is fantastic! It's a family atmosphere and we've run into friends there several times, it's one of the most popular restaurants in Mt. Horeb. This is my new favorite Mexican restaurant!!
I am visiting Wisconsin from California for a week. We have amazing Mexican food where I am from and I am very picky about it. I told myself I wouldn't get Mexican or sushi while I was out here. Then someone said I had to give this new place Aztlan a chance. Everything about this place (other than the building itself) is fantastic. The food was very very good and authentic. I got the Enchilads Poblanos with mole' sauce. The waitstaff was awesome and spoke Spanish. Our waiter nailed our complicated 5 person order without writing a single thing down. The margaritas were large, strong, and not made from ultra sweet pre-made mix. I will make sure to come here every time I visit Mt. Horeb.
So you walk in the front door and it SMELLS like heaven. The restaurant looks great and the wait staff greeted us, I mean like 2 or three of them within 2 seconds of walking in. They were so so friendly and the food! Oh my gosh the food was the best Mexican food I have EVER had. Definitely try the queso with your chips!!

My husband and I LOVE The Bistro! They have a small main menu but you go there for the specials. We have never been disappointed. And look forward to the appetizers sent out from the kitchen. We did gazpacho shooters tonight. What a treat! The Bistro is a definite must go!
Last night was my first visit to Bistro 101 and I'm definitely a fan! I don't get to Mount Horeb very often, but I would absolutely go back, if only to eat there again! The service is great - enthusiastic and helpful - very passionate about their local food and their menu. All 3 of my friends ordered the Halibut and they LOVED it! In fact, they barely spoke they were so focused on their delicious dinners. I was in a red meat mood so I ordered the Bistro Burger. Winning!!! It was a really fantastic burger! The meat is local and HIGH quality, it was cooked perfectly medium rare and the pretzel bun was magic. No kidding, best pretzel bun I've ever had! The potato wedges were good, nothing special, but a nice side. However, the burger was the star. Let's talk wine for a minute. I'm a big red girl. I love the big reds and typically, I go for a nice cabernet. We ordered a bottle of the 2011 Homefront Red by Murphy-Goode (Santa Rosa, CA) and it was ideal. SUPER good! We all loved it! I'm going to try to find it locally so I can buy some bottles for home. Yes, that good! And a portion of each bottle sold goes to Operation Homefront so that's one more thing to feel good about.
When my parents asked me to meet them for dinner in Mount Horeb, I was skeptical. Both have discerning tastes that lead them to mostly eat in because they live at least 20 minutes from a good restaurant, and my mother is a very good cook. I guess sometimes your parents are right, because I've been coming back to Bistro 101 every time my parents are in town, or I have an excuse to eat in Mount Horeb. First of all, the people who work there are wonderful. After one dinner, the next time I came in, Marco remembered my name and that I love seafood, so would I like to try the halibut tonight? (Yes, you want to try the halibut if it's available) The bar features a limited wine list (but standard for the area), but Marco is generous with his pours, which is great for catching up with family over. Bistro 101 is the only place outside of Madison that my father will order steak. Maybe this is in part because they let him choose the filet before they cook it. This is a restaurant that is about more than fantastic food - it's also the friendly atmosphere cultivated by the staff. I am partial to seafood so I usually order the halibut or crab cakes, though I know they plan to branch out into difference cuisine in 2014. The sides are a more standard pilaf, but the roasted vegetables served in the winter are a wonderful accompaniment to most of the dishes. My family is partial to sharing so I've had steak and it was perfect; I've tried it rare and medium well, since mom and dad differ on how they prefer steak cooked, and both ways are delicious. The wait staff and kitchen are accommodating to any special requests, and most of the menu can be made gluten free. The aesthetics of the restaurant are such that you'd swear you were in Madison: heavy on wood and white tile accent which are reminiscent of a time past. The prices are Madisonian as well, but worth it.

Grumpy Troll Pub & Brewery

Reviews:
The Grumpy Troll is an awesome little brewpub in Mt. Horeb that is definitely worth the drive from Milwaukee or Madison. Going on a day trip to Madison? Make this place your pit stop! Their beers are especially tasty and absolutely turn the Grumpy Troll into a necessary destination for anyone who enjoys sampling craft beers (my boyfriend, a self-proclaimed beer snob, always brings home a few bottles whenever we visit). The burgers, soups, and sandwiches are excellent (the reuben is particularly good and rivals anything you can find in Milwaukee), and their beer-battered fries are some of the BEST I've ever eaten.
Memorable for the wrong reasons. I ordered a bowl of seafood chowder and a side salad with raspberry vinaigrette. The vinaigrette was extremely sweet - basically raspberry sauce on an OK mixed greens salad. The seafood chowder was very thin and had a decent overall flavor. However the amount of salt in the soup was at least 3x the necessary amount. It was so salty that I only finished it due to hunger. The cornbread muffin that accompanied the dish was incredibly underbaked. I don't understand how you can screw up a cornbread muffin. Half of it was inedible because half of it was raw dough. The only reason this gets 2 stars was the service. The waitress was very sweet and efficient. Otherwise, would never come back.
I've been here twice now. The first time, we ate downstairs. The beer is good the food is 'meh'. I ordered chicken wings that were not good. The salads looked great, though! The second time was tonight. We veered upstairs to the pizzeria. Holy smokes was it good!! Crust was thin and perfectly cooked. Toppings were plentiful with lots of veggies!! I will definitely be back upstairs to the pizzeria. The menu was well priced and the service was good:).

Best pizza in Mt. Horeb. I've never had them mess up my order and the ingredients seem fresh. I order from here very frequently and I've never had a bad pizza. For a small town like Mt Horeb, I'm thankful for this place because it beats the chain options!
I'm giving them three stars, but I want to stress that the quality of the pizza is closer to two--the extra star is for the outstanding service. My friend and I spent the day biking from Madison to Mt. Horeb, hoping to go to the Grumpy Troll for pizza and beer, but the pizzeria was closed! We ended up heading over to this place for lunch (then back to the GT for beer). Service was outstanding--overly nice staff, pizza came out quickly, etc. We got a pizza with jalapenos and pepperoni on one side, ham (I'm a horrible Jew) and pineapple on the other. The jalapenos and pineapple definitely came from the can. That's a huge, huge no-no in my book. We went with the thin crust, which was definitely a premade crust. The pizza was made on a conveyor belt oven, which most pizza people consider bush league (I know I do). The pizza was fine. We were starving from biking 25+ miles, so we plowed through the whole thing! The ingredients here, though, were definitely not fresh. The crust was too thin, like a cracker. We did get free water bottles, though! The total for a medium was $13.75. That's alright, although I think a chain like Dominos is pretty close to them in terms of quality. This certainly isn't five star pizzas, and a place like Great Scott's wouldn't last a month back home on the East Coast. Next time I go to Mt. Horeb, I'm going to stick to the Grumpy Troll--their pizza is better and there's beer there. Considering the offerings in this tiny town for pizza, this stuff is alright.
If we are going to order Pizza, it has to be Great Scotts. Got to go local, not a national chain for pizza. Love the small town Pizza shop feel with plenty of specialty pizzas - non traditional and the regular toppings too. Friendly service on the phone, delivery service is quick and the drivers are friendly. We love the thin crust pizzas the best. I love the vegetarian green goddess pizza. But there are so many others to choose from. They also offer salads and toasted subs. I hope they keep it going and love all the support they give the community.

Breakfast there and it was horrible and terribly overpriced Ordered biscuits and gravy and got dinner roll cut in half and was so hard it could serve as a NATO bullet....
Very small inside, but big plate of food for price. I had Tuscan chicken sandwich and will say best sandwich I've ever had. Friendly staff!
Old school, small town restaurant with big and classic flavors. Stopped in for lunch. The ambiance is cosy, wood paneling, simple table layout, and your grandpa might still be there from breakfast. Owner greeted us immediately and seated us right away. No kids menu's but said she would accommodate my little guests as needed. We ordered the french toast with all of the meaty fixin's and a blue cheese burger on special. French toast was delicious and cooked to perfection. Powdered sugar, couple of blueberries on the side. My little people were set with this, the bacon and sausage patties. Burger was cooked perfectly as requested at medium. Bun was a beautiful kaiser with cornmeal crust. Blue cheese had the perfect tangy zip I love. Coleslaw was hand made. The little people thought it tasted like it had whipped cream in it... as long as they are eating foods with veggies in it, it's all good. Crunchy french fries. Service was great, food was great, we will be back. ** As I passed by this evening, the place was packed for Fish Fry on Friday Night. Note to try it out! ****

maybe it was the amazing waitress. Or the crispy hash browns with onions and cheese? or was it the golden Chinese cheese curds? but then it might have been the delicious 12 ounce new YOrk strip. Outstanding. A full menu of great options. The Italian at the nearby table looked scrumptious too. I mean the spaghetti and bot the brunett. Only thing I didn't care for was the stir fried veggies. Too overcooked and dry. This place is unique as its decor. LOVED IT!
Friendly place. Food was pretty good. Served hot . They have the best shakes ever! The interior needs updating but its alright of a place with a lot of different selections on the menu
It is really not great at all unless you go for breakfast. Which is great because it's really hard to screw up breakfast.

This joint is one of only a few late night bars in Mt. Horeb and most of the younger folks, 20's and early 30's, can be found here after the other bars close. Cheap beer and mixed drinks keeps the people on a tight budget happy. They have a few pool tables and a huge back deck/patio area thats heated in the winter time so - smokers rejoice! They have Karaoke and a DJ on the weekends which can be very entertaining. If a bar fight is going to break out in Mount Horeb, its going to happen here 99% of the time. But Ive never had an issue at this place and people have always been nice. In the winter time, you will find that the snowmobilers frequent this joint. I'm a little older so I don't go here very often but once in a while I'll stop in to grab a cheap beer and survey the scene. If cheap drinks are your thing, I'd definitely recommend this place. They do serve food but all they have is a flat top and a fryer so dont expect much other than some greasy bar food. Thats to be expected and a joint like this so no surprise there. However, they do have a pizza oven and Tombstone pizzas. So if its late night and you need to soak up some of that booze in your stomach, the Tombstone pizza is spot on.

Well the website makes it look better than it is. The lobby smelled of old man. Our room had holes in carpet and the carpet was filthy. And Bed Bugs!!!!!!! Yes, we just found a ton of bed bug bites!! But hey, that's what you get for $55 right?
My soon to be wife asked weeks in advance if we could book a couple of rooms just to shower and change in. We were having a wedding at a county park in Mt. Horeb and there were no facilities there. I had to help set up that morning at the park and didn't have time to drive back to Madison afterwards. This hotel would have been a perfect place as a sort of staging area. When I arrived, the guy at the front counter acted like a jerk. He was confused as to why we were there even after I politely explained the situation. He still hesitated and said, "I don't know if we have any clean rooms available." Are you kidding me? This place is not the Hyatt. There were like 3 cars in the parking lot and about 50 rooms. Meanwhile, I'm in a hurry and this guy is still questioning me like I'm lying and I'm just dying to get into this run down hotel a couple hours before check-in time. I called my fiance to make sure she made the reservation and she assured me she did. This guy regardless of not knowing about our reservation couldn't seem to wrap his head around what we were using the room for. I might has well have been talking to the pen on the counter. He was just a total curmudgeon. All this hassle just to pay full price for using a crappy hotel for literally less then an hour to shower and change. Any normal person would have said, "Congratulations, here is your key! Have a nice day."
Gross! Room was dirty. Sheets had not been changed, found long black hair under the pillow. The bathroom had mold and mildew. Heat barely worked. This place should be condemned. Sure it is a deal because they have resident junkies living there, drinking beers and smoking pot at 9 am! Could not wait to leave. Suprised my truck was not broken into.Honestly, avoid this rat trap and keep driving.
