Jailhouse Tap

We went up for the Minhaus Brewery and stayed for some drinks at the Jailhouse Tap. How could you not after finding out the Jailhouse Tap used to be...well, a jail? The regulars were gracious and engaged in a lot of Packers-Bears razzing with us, even though much of our party was obnoxious due to the amount of beer consumed. When I excused myself to use the restroom and came out to find the rest of our entourage had forgotten about me and left, they even said I could stay with them and have another beer. Heh. I'm sure they've seen their fair share of drunken tourists, but Monroe treated us well.

Food is reasonably priced and very good. The eggrolls are the best around. Their spicy is a nice heat. Not just a tang. I haven't lived in the area in a while. But when I come back to town and this is my first restaurant stop. Everything I have had on the menu I have enjoyed.
This place is prime. As far as Chinese food goes, this place is top notch. I didn't expect much from this place in such a small town. I had come here on several occasions back in the summer of 2012 with a friend. I had the cashew chicken one time and it was perfect. The other time I had vegetable chicken with white rice. All was perfectly done and tasted phenomenal. The service was exceptional as well and I had a great experience here. Really my only complaint was the crab ranguns. They looked typical but did not have the sweetness that they should have to make them good. So my only tip here is to avoid the crab ranguns. Otherwise assuming this place hasn't changed too much, expect a great meal.
Chop Sticks is on the beautiful Monroe courthouse square, next to Baumgartner's cheese store and pub., there's plenty of parking on the street. A local favorite and a favorite of GLJ. I've had the pleasure of eating in some of the finest little Chinese kitchens throughout the US, Mexico, and Canada. I have eaten in the large 'old style' dim sum places ( my fave) in China-towns on both coasts and in Chicago. Chop Sticks does a good job staying true with what it has chosen to offer rather than offering 'Americanized' versions that most of us wouldn't notice. Alll of their soups are very good (my fave is the hot and sour but as a family we usually compromise on wonton soup). I recommend going ahead and ordering in courses. Soup, dim sum, entrè and rice, and finish with a good tea and almond cookie. But plan on sharing if you're not a big eater. One caution (and a suggestion)... if your stomach is delicate, ask for Szechwan made 'not hot' but - if you can tolerate a little spice in your life... go for. It. The spice helps make the dishes authentic. Soon you will miss it when it has been omitted. I've not had a bad meal yet!

I go to Perks whenever I am driving through Monroe or there for work. I have never had anything bad at Perms. I love their salads and sandwiches. They are the only coffee shop that I have seen have a green monster smoothie, and it's awesome. The staff is very friendly also. Great place!
I love this place! There are no other coffee shops as unique and comfortable as Perks! Not only is the atmosphere welcoming but the food and drinks are great as well!
I stopped by Monroe for work and searched for coffee shops on Yelp. I am so glad that I stepped in. This is a real surprise because you'll never know how cute Perk is from the outside!

Garden Deli the

Reviews:
Love this place. Very friendly people. The food is terrific. Very fresh. Stuffed potatoes offer endless choices. Sandwiches are good with amazing bread. This is a perfect casual place to pop in a grab a good lunch or dinner. Great deserts. They are open later than lots of places on the square. Great place for ice cream too.
Alright, you're in a town known for an amazing cheese selection, a plethora of dining choices floods the downtown square and then there's this place. We came here as an afterthought, but left with a huge smile. Most of the downtown square dining spots had a waiting list so we kept looking. That's when we found the Garden Deli. A few of their specials were listed on a window so we investigated further. After spotting several promising choices on their menu we decided to stay. After all, there was no wait to eat and the prices were a third of what we'd spend at alternatives in the square. I had a club sub that included fresh veggies, meat and bread. Did I mention that a 7inch sub was $5.50? In Illinois we pay $10+ for that size sandwich, probably more if we want mayo. I also had a slice of pie which was excellent. I like to explore restaurants when we come up here but I'd go back to the Garden Deli without thinking twice. Great food and great prices...just can't beat it. Cheers.
A deli-style lunch counter and an ice cream parlor in the same space? Sounds like a perfect road-trip stop to me. My wife and I were on our way from Chicago to Spring Green and reached Monroe just as the needle hit 'E' on our stomachs. Since I had been to Monroe once before, I knew that a stroll around the downtown square should present us with at least a couple of decent options for a quick, cheap lunch. Two things pulled us into the Garden Deli: their Friday special wrap and the Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream logo. I got the Friday special, a tasty southwestern barbecue chicken wrap on spinach tortilla. That plus a fountain drink was only $6.something. My wife enjoyed a basic turkey sandwich on a four-inch roll. All told we got two sandwiches and two drinks for twelve bucks and change. Beautiful. But wait, it gets better. It just happened to be National S'mores Day, and my wife just happens to be a massive s'mores fan, AND Garden Deli just happens to have a s'mores sundae. Syzygy! So of course we ordered it for dessert. Delicious Chocolate Shoppe brand vanilla ice cream, with hot fudge, marshmallow topping, chocolate chips, and graham cracker crumbles. Divine. This place is pretty no-frills, but it's awesome nevertheless. Casually friendly service like you get only in small towns. Various types of pre-sliced pies in the deli case. Ancient hardwood floors. Cute and stunningly clean restrooms. Regulars such as old ladies who order coffee to stay and have exact change ready. A board listing nine possible sandwich toppings/condiments, three of which are mustards. And two of which are "onions" and "red onions." Love it.

Laughing Trout

407 6th St
Monroe, 53566
Reviews:
Real nice place. Kind of a bar and grill. Chef makes good quality dishes. For a small town, I was impressed. Soup was definitely homemade. Lots of delicious mushrooms in a creamy base. Very good on a cold winters night. Wine by the glass includes Duckhorn Decoy, a great Cabernet for the price. Main entree was an 8 ounce grilled salmon steak, a side, and choice of soup or salad. DEEElicious! Too stuffed to try a dessert. Bottom line, great place and a highlight of what Monroe has to offer. Within walking distance of hotels!!
Arrived on a Saturday night without a reservation and we were kindly accommodated . Our one hour wait was spent trying out the martini menu in the bar. The Strawberry Fields martini is not to be missed, it was muddled, shaken and served ice cold. Food was amazing but was not to be rushed, expect a leisurely experience. Ahi tuna appetizer was perfectly seared on crispy crostini, Brandy seared scallops were pure heaven along with the rosemary smoked gouda mashed potatoes. The steak skewers were delicious alongside the ice cold pickled beets. Do not skip dessert, the coconut cream pie was homemade and the clear winner over the cherry topped cheesecake. The flaky crust, smooth filling and crispy toasted coconut made it the best ever. Two and half hours later, we left after having one of the best meals we've ever eaten, worth every dollar.
Laughing Trout had so much promise and was very good the first couple times we went, but after that the dining experience went way down hill from there. The next time we went, the food was mediocre at best, the rolls were cold, the soup was salty, and the rice pilaf looked like it came straight from a box. The last time we went, we had the "pleasure" being seated in the bar area, we both ordered medium rare steaks, and they came out raw on the inside. To top off the experience, practically all of the wait staff on duty were congregated at the bar socializing. It was very unprofessional. I don't know what happened since they opened as far as management, but it is obvious service and attention to details went out the door. Pretty sad, because it would be nice to have a finer dining experience in Monroe.

Bullets is pretty darn good with most of what they do. The bullets special pizza is one of my favorites. It's the only pizza where I really like the sausage. I love the French Dip also. The only thing that I would change about Bullets is the restaurant layout. It drives me crazy going up to the salad bar area. When I order an entree, I usually ask for soup to avoid the salad bar area.
