This is our favorite place for dinner and ice cream! The German food is outstanding. My kids tell me that the pizza is the best in the North Woods- and they should know since they've tried them all. I like the salad wraps- garden and Caesar- they taste fresh and healthy. Plus, when I have the wrap (and the hand cut French fries- because you MUST have those) I don't have to feel as guilty about having ice cream afterwards. I am addicted to the ice cream- it is so yummy and scooped by the friendliest young lady. Getting Serious and Mint Avalanche are serious decadence to die for. The best part about this place though is the ambiance. The outdoor beer garden has unique seating throughout and the live music is always entertaining and family friendly. The owner is an incredibly friendly guy who treats everyone like family. It's like stepping back into a simpler time when you visit this gem of the North Woods! Be aware that there is very limited seating here, so plan to wait a while- especially on a live music night. But check it out because the experience is well worth the wait!!

Love The Pines! Their popover and soup lunch special is great, and dinners are good and portions are huge. Chocolate Shoppe ice cream (Wisconsin's own) is the best around, and my kids love the homemade ice cream cookie sandwiches. They also now sell "Sweetie Pines" cookies and other treats at places around Mercer, and they are delish!
Our family travels to this area annually, as many Chicagoans who hate Chicago tend to do. The Pines was a back up plan, as our original destination was too busy, and now this establishment has become THE plan. Kid friendly. Great food. Great service. Even the other customers are fun! The only reason I cannot give 5 stars is that the miniature golf, while challenging and very fun, was in a state of disrepair. I'm not sure if it was because we were there early in the season though, so I am hopeful that when we return in a few weeks (!!!!!) it will be in better shape. Why can't Chicago be more like Mercer?
Growing up, my grandparents lived in Mercer. The Pines is a MUST if you are staying here of passing by. The German food is to die for, and although the mini golf is old, it is still fun. The owner will remember you, as he remembered me after not visiting for 12 years! The looney bread is delicious, and be sure to get some ice cream!

Johnny's has been one of my favorite bars as long as I can remember, even eating lunch there as a kid. The current owner, Kyle, is a great guy and an even better bartender. The food is fantastic, juke box packed, and there are nice televisions for game watching during cabin trips. Ladies, our bathroom is clean and fresh all the time. Stop in next time you're in the area, it's a classic in the area with good burgers and great taps. *Fairly certain they take credit cards now, but there's an atm inside anyway.
Came to Mercer for a weekend of fishing and kayaking. We were hungry so we went to Johnny's for a late lunch. Great service and clean restaurant/bar. I ordered the gyro sandwich with fries and asked for no tomato and light on the onions for the sandwich. It was perfect! Not one crumb was left on the plate. Would definitely be back and recommend this place to friends.
We have a cabin in the Mercer area and have tried many of the local restaurants. Johnny's has good food at good prices. Mondays are fish taco night...they are excellent! They also have free wifi so it's a comfortable place to catch up on emails while having a beer and burger. They only accept cash.

What a great local spot! Trent the bartender is a friendly, hilarious guy. Food is surprisingly great, juke box is easy to access, and drinks are perfectly reasonable. Friendliest place in the north woods.
Always nice to find a place that will take care of you and serve food late in the evening in Mercer. Excellent service and the food is wonderful. We happened upon Mexican night, super nachos. Lots of fun playing the jukebox with my daughter, great tunes. We'll be back.
The Pub Burger is huge and awesome. Everything on the menu is fantastic. don't be afraid to eat at the Around the Corner Pub. Huge selection on the menu, too.

My family and I have been dining at Ding A Lings, while on our annual summer vacation up in the Northwoods, for as long as I can remember. We've *never* had a bad meal! We usually come on Sunday's when they have their Roast Duck, BBQ Ribs & 16oz Steak on special. Y-U-M-M-Y! Dining here is a true experience. You are greeted at the front door by a giant U shaped bar & by the owner who sat us (She was an absolute doll! And her husband is a FANTASTIC chef!). Their cocktail menu is fun & filled with the great blended creamy drinks of yesterday like a Pink Squirrel & a Grasshopper! They have a great little salad bar with many options you don't see every day... like pickled watermelon rind?? OMG delish! Or liver patê, cheddar cheese spread & horseradish cheese spread. Only in Wisconsin! We sat by the windows and had a excellent view of the many (very active!) bird feeders they have on the property. Dinner and a show! We loved every minute of it. We have had both the duck & ribs for many years (the ribs are amazing!!!) But, this time we all decided on roast duck (Both ways with either cranberry or orange glaze) and we're blown away with how delicious our meal was. Crispy skin, sweet glaze and succulent meat.... it was roasted to perfection! Our server was SO sweet & was fun to chat with. Very attentive, too! Overall, Our dining experience was superb! I highly recommend visiting Ding A Lings on your next trip up north.
My family has been dining here for years as a 4th of July week tradition. So I was excited to bring some friends there for dinner this year. We went there on a whim and crossed our fingers we would be able to get in. I was so embarrassed by the way the hostess treated us for not making a reservation. Apparently they were short staffed and we were pretty much turned away. The "hostess" was so rude my friend literally stood there with his mouth open. Needless to say they have lost our business.
This little supper club looks like it ccould have been a roadhouse back in the day. I remember having a decent meal with a really good salad bar, which is unusual for a supper club. Of course this is Wisconsin so the first thing that greets you when you walk in is a huge horse-shaped bar surround by video poker machines. Take a close look at the bar as the top is constructed of aggregate stones cemented together. Also they have a wonderful birding area with feeders, baths, etc. so you can watch the birds while you nosh in the dining room. This is just a very comfortable, peaceful place.

NOW THAT'S WHAT ID CALL A BAD RESTAURANT!!! The atmosphere was someone's feeble attempt at "north woods decorating" by someone who had never been to the Northwoods! The service was really sad, but after we spent some time talking with our wait person, we found out how they're treated by the owners and then we understood! We are accustomed to "city" prices and don't mind one bit paying high prices for good quality.... On the other hand, we really resent paying high prices for WAY SUB STANDARD FOOD! We had brought some guests with us from Minneapolis, and they're now teasing us relentlessly about the "pretend" restaurant experience! We have cabin in the vicinity but would never dream of going to this place EVER again!
We just went there for the Friday fish fry. You only get one piece, but it reaches from one end of the platter to the other, so no complaints about skimping from me! Potato pancakes could have been crispier, but had great flavor. And not a huge deal, but I asked the server if their iced tea was unsweetened, and she said it was. But it's the sweetened crap with all the stuff added. I will go back, but not Friday. That's "Try Something Different" night. Since their menu looks good, I think it's worth another trip.
Nice try. The rehab of the old 51 Club is nice but immediately it's clear, it doesn't have it. The layout of the main room is awkward with some tables too close to each other and others in odd places. The decorating tries to give off an authentic northwoods feel but doesn't succeed. The "paintings" are hung 1.5 feet too high -- a sure sign of amateurism. Then there's the food. First clue is a menu with 2x as many items as a small restaurant can possibly do well. And sure enough, everything was average at best. Most items tasted precooked/frozen which is the only way a limited kitchen can do that many things. There was no sublety in the flavors, too much butter/oil and not enough attention to detail. The service was friendly but a bit slow. That being said, it's probably the best restaurant in Mercer. We could use a better one.

Great service and excellent breakfast food. I've never been there for lunch or dinner. They even have a nice counter area that you can sit at.
Worst Service I have ever seen, When they asked for drinks they didn't even ask my mom or me for drinks only my dad, my mom had to tell to ask for her coffee and when she came back with the drinks she slammed the coffee on the table(Spilling it) all over the table.... We ended up leaving the restaurant in anger after that happend not even ordering our food ...... Don't ever go there
I've been visiting the cafe since I was a kid. Extremely friendly staff and the food is great. You can pretty much order whatever you want, homemade. Burgers are excellent as well as the soup. We'll be back in August.

Hideaway

Spent a week there in late July, was checked in by the bartender who wasn't sure exactly which cabin was ours. They advertise 10 cabins but 4 are sold and privately owned, the rest have "for sale" signs infront of them. Only 2 piers in the water, one was ready to fall apart and neither one had anchor points to tie off boats to. Garbage can full of empties at the shore line when we got there, still full when we left. Cabin was in really rough shape. Never did talk to owner until Friday when I paid my bill and then really never did introduce himself as the owner. Walked by me twice during the week and never asked how our stay was. Sad, place has a lot of potential but owner doesn't seem interested in running the business anymore. Bar was nice and nostalgic but over run with video poker games.
