Had rookies Cater my rehearsal dinner for my wedding. The food was absolutely AMAZING! My guests can't stop talking about the twice baked potatoes! They made everything super easy, I never had to stress out about anything. Staff was great and accommodating to anything I asked. Highly recommended! Wishing I would have picked a wedding venue where they could have catered that as well!

Unbelievably awful service. There were half a dozen dirty tables in Rookies this evening and not one clean table. After waiting fifteen minutes, I finally tracked down a server and asked if we could be seated. She snapped at me, "We're working on cleaning one for you." We waited ten more minutes. When no progress was made on cleaning a table for us, we gave up and left. The whole time we stood waiting, all we heard was grumbling about the slow service from the lucky few who managed to snag a clean place to sit. As we walked back to our car, we saw two Rookies employees standing outside talking and laughing like they didn't have a care in the world. They clearly aren't too concerned about losing their customers. Hard to believe this place is owned by the same guy who owns the Shoe Box in Black Earth (which is where we were headed when we stopped to eat, by the way). The service in his two businesses are polar opposites.

I'm going to keep it really simple with this review of Rookies. Food - 3.5 Stars The pretzel bun burger I had was arguably the best burger I've ever had with a soft pretzel bun and gooey Wisconsin cheddar over a beef patty. Still the menu's offerings were pretty typical of just about any sports bar so I can't give it higher than this. Atmosphere - 5 Stars If you're a sports nut you'll love this place. Floor to ceiling memorabilia, including bathrooms that are done entirely in sports cards. Outside they have a stadium for wiffle ball that makes you feel like you're in the big leagues. Overall - 4 Stars

It is not often you come across a restaurant that has a wiffle ball field that you can rent to play on. My family and I were there to celebrate a birthday and the staff took great care of us. We rented the field for an hour before we were going to sit down for lunch. The field was fun and the kids had a blast hitting and running. Because of the all the rain Wisconsin had, we ended up not having to pay to play because we were asked to only step on the outfield to retrieve balls but not to stand on it for long periods of time. The restaurant itself is best described as a sports bar/restaurant. This place has sports memorabilia everywhere and by everywhere I mean walls, ceilings, in the bathrooms. It is covered in sports stuff. The food is your typical bar food but it is great. Everyone in my part enjoyed their food. Nothing was wrong and everything was delivered as ordered. The cheese curds were amazing. Our server was great and took great care of us. Overall I give this place 4 stars as I am a fan. I will definitely go back if in the area and think that everyone should check this place out.

Not a big fan of rookies anymore. Years ago they had good food but not anymore. I cant eat there burgers because the way they make them upsets my stomach, the only thing that's even decent tasting is there Gibson grilled cheese, and let's be honest, I can make that at home. Nice place for the bar but not good food.

Weirdly enough, this is the best Reuben I've had in the Madison area. The corned beef was very tender and really tasty (but the portion was too small). The kraut was a sweet concoction (brown sugar?) that tasted surprisingly good. I skipped the Thousand Island dressing, but was disappointed that there was no horseradish (brown) mustard available (not even Dijon), so I had to make do with the plain yellow mustard (French's). Chef's Salad came in a large portion. Chicken wing appetizer was good, but small. The sports memorabilia was cute, but overdone (whatever. It _is_ a sports bar after all). My party stopped there on the way to American Players Theater and were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food.

More memorabilia than most hall of fame museums, more flatscreen televisions than the electronics department at Best Buy, AND an uber cool whiffle ball field out back? Sign me up! Wait... what did I just sign up for? We stopped here while returning from a visit to Peck's farm; the place was fairly empty, so we browsed the infinite number of wall hangings before approaching the large, wrap-around bar. There were three bartenders behind the bar, yet it took several minutes and several attempts to flag them down before we were able to order two pints. A male bartender was gazing off into space the entire time; even with a few, "Excuse me - could we grab a beer?" lobbed his way, he was just zoned out. Odd. The sound system was CRANKING; unfortunately it wasn't music - the NASCAR race was about to start, and apparently they wanted to make sure nothing would drown out the broadcast. Mission accomplished. About midway through our visit, several dozen folks who looked and sounded as if they had just come from the Badger football game entered the bar, which prompted the sound system to grow even more loud. We laughed at it, finished our beers, and then waited just shy of 10 minutes to get someone's attention so that we could pay the tab. I love the Shoe Box and the Mallards, and Steve Schmitt, and all of the great things that he's acquired and shares at this place. Unfortunately, the service in the bar was atrocious, and the sound system was beyond obnoxious. I sound like Grandpa Geekysteve here, but when there are 7-8 people in a bar, there's no need to have the sound system set to "11". Prices were extremely reasonable; two taps were $7.50. I spied 24oz cans of PBR and other domestics. Food = N/A (only had drinks) Service = 1 star (painfully slow and frustrating) Value = 4 stars MISC = 1 star/4 stars (1 for the unnecessary noise; 4 stars for the flair & whiffle ball field) 3 stars is a bit generous; I'll revisit at some point and update.

The worst service ever!! On not 1, not 2, not 3 but 4 separate occasions. The only reason for trying it that many times is that their food is rather tasty and they have a yummy fish fry. The 3rd time after they completely forgot to bring out my dinner at all then asked if their was anything else we needed?!?!?! my family and I complained and walked out hungry. This was extremely unacceptable as we had complained after the first time and they took $10 off our bill. The second time was at most...the service or lack there of was at least friendly. 3rd visit was an absolute disaster. Management later emailed and offered a $50 gift certificate and after months of contemplating whether or not to use it that's how horrible our experience was. We caved and for a fourth time on our "We messed up" gift certificate the service again was a complete fail! All of the other reviews I see are at the bar maybe my husband, 2 children and infant should sit there next time. Not happening! will never go back not even if they gave me $200 in free food. This is unfortunate this place has great potential. With about 5 tables each of the 4 Fridays we went during dinner time. In a small town where there aren't really any other places to go??!?!?!?! I am pretty sure the waitstaff and lack of training by management had tainted this place. I even worked for the owner when I was younger at one of his other establishments and I told the management this also "If he was here he would be beyond disappointed" the owner keeps his retail staff on a tight leash and does a very good job with his retail locations. I do not know why this place fell through the cracks.

And now, another installment in my Reuben quest! I won't rehash the details in Bruce K.'s review, as he's covered them just fine. (Damn, now no one will find my review Useful!) So, on to the Reuben. Overall, I'd say the sandwich was about average. The meat was tender (again, obtained locally) but the "smokey" flavor was overpowering and makes me think that it was just a little too "done". In fact, in was hard to even notice the presence of any kraut or dressing. Balanced? No. Despite the lack of kraut/dressing flavor, the sandwich was a little on the greasy side. This is obviously a hard quality to manage considering the ingredients, but this is about my quest for the perfect Reuben. So no quarter is asked, and none given. Was it the worst Reuben? No. The Best? No. I have to go with "Just Above Average".

Service has always been a bit hit or miss when sitting in the bar area at Rookies but I normally don't get too worked up about service or the lack thereof. However last week I had a bad experience, so bad that I don't see myself coming back any time soon. I met my father for lunch as he was in the area and we grabbed a table by the bar. There appeared to be only two servers on duty so I understood why it took around five minutes for the bartender to come by and take our drink orders - she'd acknowledged us when we walked in but had a few other tables in the area to attend to first. I'd grabbed a basket of popcorn for us to snack on and so long as the drinks arrived before the saltiness of the popcorn overwhelmed us there wouldn't be a problem. Unfortunately this wasn't the case. After a while my father told me to order for him and went to the restroom. Then the bartender dropped off our drinks and I told her I was ready to order; she said she'd be back momentarily. Fifteen minutes later we'd finished our drinks and left, leaving enough money on the table to cover the bill. As we walked out the door the bartender called out to us, asking if the other server had not taken our order. Maybe it was all just a miscommunication spawned by understaffing. Maybe, but it'll take some time for me to forget losing a lunch hour with my father because of it. EDIT - I was contacted by the restaurant GM and asked to help him understand the failure in service so he could correct it. I really appreciate it when an establishment takes the time to make things better. I'm back on the Rookies bandwagon.

The sports memorabilia on the walls, ceilings and rest rooms (the men's anyway) deserve a visit if you haven't been to the Rookie's before. But, the Rookie's offers much more. Salads are surprisingly good for a sports pub. Dressings aren't homemade but the greens and toppings are always fresh and tasty - the portions generous. The sandwiches too are good, not world-class, but uniformly satisfying. The daily specials are a bit of a mixed bag. Meat loaf on Tuesday, Wednesday ribs and Thursday pasta are all good, Friday fish options are extensive. Before 2:00 pm on Friday you can have a cod fish sandwich, deep fried or broiled the way I like it for only $5.00 - a real deal. Miscellaneous specials are often highly caloric. They're great if you're anemic or work off a lot of energy on a construction job. I'm not a fan of the soups, generally too salty for my taste. The entire staff is super. We sit at the bar when available and all of the bar-tenders are friendly and attentive. Interactions with other staff are less frequent but they also are friendly and accommodating. The manager, Dave, and kitchen staff, particularly Toby, are always helpful. It's a fun laid-back place. Day-time patrons are also friendly (we don't go there at night so I can't speak for the evening crowd). Oh, and I should mention the popcorn. It's free and delicious. In the summer Dave tells me he goes through more than 100 pounds a week so it's not just me that thinks it's great. My first wife has pretty much given up on cooking so we often eat out. The Rookies is our most frequently visited day-time haunt.

Are you serious? $1 pints of Goose Island? Terrific bloody marys. Great pub food. I had the spinach salad with grilled portabello mushrooms, bermuda onion, hard-boiled egg. Deee-lish. The only drawback? You have to put up with all of that pesky Wisconsin sports memorabilia. GO CUBS!

I'm from Black Earth, and i like to go here often. It has an awesome atmosphere, lots of TVs (which you can change to what you want), great service, and great food. Their is alot to see on the walls of Rookies. With tons of sports pictures and other items. You can also watch people play some baseball out on the restaurant's own baseball diamond, you can even go out an play some if you want, if its not already being played on....

So, the atmosphere at Rookies is pretty cool. Lots of sports memorabilia everywhere; very unique. It's really too bad that the food was so terribly disgusting, because I won't be taking my friends or family here when they come from out of town. I have had 2 very bad food experiences here now, so I decided that I don't want to go back. The first bad experience was with the pork sandwich. The first time I ate it, I thought it was good. Then I had it again and I couldn't even take more than a few bites, it was that bad. Okay. It was then that I decided that I wasn't going to order food here again. Well, after a long day of work and a craving for beer, we went again. As you know, there aren't a ton of options this far West of Madison. Anyway, I ordered the fish fry. My husband ordered the nachos, even though I told him they would probably be bad. The quality of ingredients used in the nachos was so inferior that I couldn't eat them. UGH, they were just BAD. Obviously they weren't going to compare to the nachos we get at Mexican restaurants, but I didn't think they were going to be that revolting. Then fish wasn't that great either, but I think I had just lost my appetite by that point. My husband ordered a Sam Adams bottle. He took a sip and said it was bad. I took a sip and I thought it was bad too...then I looked at the "drink by" date and laughed as my eyes pretty much rolled out of my head in disbelief! My husband laughed at jokingly said "March?" (it's October). I laughed even more, shook my head and told him to look. February. Of 2009. Seriously. Now I know that Sam Adams isn't the best beer in the world and that's why it's not flying off the shelf. But 9 months?! Woah. It was pretty much at that point that we decided to leave. I figured I would share our little adventure on Yelp, since it was so bad. Although I should mention that the service was good.
