We are so glad we stopped here for dinner. Had the cheese burger with bacon and the pizza both were delicious. We will stop again if ever back up in this area. Friendly service as well.

Nice and fancy, sure. Good tasting, ok. Spending $15 for a burger in a place that is situated in a location that has, at last census, less than 600 people...yeah, not so much. Service was fantastic and the comment another reviewer had about filling up water glasses is spot on (never had to ask). If you can afford it, by all means, go. I will stick with the more pedestrian and less pricey options.
My first visit here and I was disappointed. Nice atmosphere though I was surprised there weren't candles on the tables. It would have made the atmosphere a lot better! The cheese plate had some great pates but some of the crackers were stale. The entree, the special, was mediocre and priced $9 more than listed on the regular menu, I guess because it was the special and a lemon vinaigrette was added??? Our waitress was very nice but needed to stop saying "no problem" to everything, most of which was part of her job, thus it shouldn't be a problem. Another waitress who helped out could not have been nicer and was a wonderful plus. It is pricey and for me just wasn't worth it.
From making the reservation, to asking directions, to the dining experience, all very excellent. This was our second visit and we were not disappointed. The bartender was friendly and pleasant and she knew how to pour my bourbon "neat". The piano player in the bar was entertaining and his music fits the atmosphere. The waitress took very good care of us. The cheese and crackers, which are waiting for you at the table are good and the appetizers have never disappointed us. My prime rib was outstanding and my wife's seafood ravioli was excellent. The wine menu is good and fits their food offerings. We were treating my father-in-law for his birthday. He ordered a filet and likes it a certain way. His steak was exactly as ordered. The desserts were excellent also. The cheesecake was home-made and the size was generous. All in all a very good experience. We don't frequent the North Woods as often as we would like but this is the venue for Saturday night from now on when we are up north. Kellie and Jim are very friendly and thoughtful, Jim took our coats and hung them for us. A crackling fire in the fireplace would have been great. For Saturday evening I would suggest dress/casual attire. I wore a sport shirt and jeans but wish I would have dressed a bit more to match the ambiance. I was not looked down on nor did I feel totally uncomfortable, just a personal thing.

Went for the fish fry. I kind of got that "Uh oh" feeling when we were the only folks in the dining room. The bar was hoppin'. But more diners appeared. Waitress was nice and competent, and the food was very good. All you can eat haddock for $11! Baked beans, (awesome smoky flavor) coleslaw, choice of potato and cornbread. One question--- Is it typical to serve cornbread from the refrigerator? It was good, but I've always eaten it warm or room temp. One of their potato choices, "pinecones" are mashed potatoes in a breading, and deep fried. Kind of like a large Tater Tot was their description. They're pretty boring, and could use some help. Maybe garlic, cheese or bacon? Oh, yes. They had the Up Nort' requisite critter heads and fish on the wall.
Ok thought I would try it out a new place and drove down from place in Mercer. Wish I could say I liked the food. Waited 10 minutes to get seated... Actually asked the girl if we could sit.... Sure she said I will bring you some menus.... We sit 10 minutes go by not a waiter to be found.... The girl who said would bring us menus is cleaning empty tables? Got up and left..... Guess they don't need my business
Fun little bar up in the north woods! My dad often visits this place and is now a regular. Every time I've been there, the staff is always friendly and helpful. A couple of months ago, the power went out at our cabin and we thought of the rustic right away as our little savior for a good meal of food. It has great pizza! They make an excellent old fashioned too (if I do say so myself). My dad seems to know most of the staff there, so that's nice that we can buddy up to them. They also have wireless so if you're in the north woods and don't have it yet (still stuck in the 90s era with dial-up), then head on over there and they'll treat ya nice! Nice place with some good food and great service!

Our party of 6 agreed that this was some of the best food we had ever eaten. The owner came our and talked to us, Larry was very friendly along with the waitress. The food was amazing. We enjoyed the bayou burger, baby-back ribs, Chicken Oscar, ceaser salad and Al's cheese potion #7. The food was outstanding, drinks were super tasty. We were given a complimentary dessert for a 50th birthday, the "cran-burlé" was so yummy. It was casual and the large fireplace warmed the whole restaurant. They were even very accommodating for snowmobilers! Overall we could not be more thrilled with new place! 5 stars and I am recommending it to anyone and everyone I talk to
It's been a while since I've been treated like a guest. Very warm welcome ( literally a roaring fire in the hearth), gracious and considerate hosts and waitstaff. Nice selection of draft beers and a personable bar keep. Waitress who made extra effort to accomodate all of our requests. Top notch food from a nice selection of fare. I will be back soon and intend to bring friends. Worth the 50 minute drive from Rhinelander.
While I have greatly enjoyed Aberdeen on a number of occasions fish fry is not one of them. I recently went wen't to Aberdeen for fish fry on a Friday night before heading down to a Min Aqua Bat's show. Our food came out quickly but it wasn't too our liking. The fish was over battered, sides were okay but nothing great. The biggest travesty of the night though were the "potato pancakes". I was excited to see them offered as an option but they were quite bad. What Aberdeen considers a "potato pancake" is closer to a McDonalds hash brown, it's a deep fried potato puck. Even worse, when I asked if they had apple sauce or sour cream, I was told that they don't. They only serve the potato pancakes with maple syrup!?!?

This restaurant is a hidden treasure - I had the Seafood St. Thomas which was delicious, especially when served by the friendly waitress in the screened porch with a view of the lake. My friend had the lamb chops which she said were 'out of this world' and for dessert we had decadent chocolate jalapeno cake and a chocolate tart - we give Parkside Tavern two thumbs up!!
The restaurant is an older building which has been updated into a beautiful, relaxing environment. The screened porch was comfortable even though the temperatures were cool outside. Our waitstaff was great! The appetizer tray was appealing and had a beautiful presentation. Both of our entrees were delicious. We will definitely be returning!

We've been going here for years ( before the movie was made) service was great before the movie then slowly went down hill. I think that got to their heads a little but needless to say we keep coming back every winter by snowmobiles and summer. Food is almost always good. Every now and then they'll have a slip up. The baked French onion soup is a must everytime, prime rib and duck on Saturdays are good but I pretty much always get the chicken parm! This past weekend we had a great server, young man whom we've never seen before and he was great!! Oh, can't forget they have a good breakfast too!
We head up to Mercer every summer & venture out to try some of the local cuisine. With all the history around LBL, we had to go! We came in on a Wednesday night around 6. When we stepped in the front door there was plenty of old newpaper articles about the Dilliner/FBI shootout. I really enjoy history, so I was happy to take a look. One of the owners was hostessing & took us to our table. Since we had our 2 children with us, they sat us in the far room with all the other families with kids...made sense. Bonus she sat us in the corner right where there are 2 windows with bullet holes preserved! Very cool! Our waitress seemed to be having a bummer of the day because I don't recall one smile until she delivered the bill. Apparently, the "family" section is the dreaded section for the servers. We were started off with a basket of warm bread, with a southwestern spread & a bowl of a pinto bean salad. All were great. With our entrees we each had the baked (swiss) french onion soup & this was also extremely tasty! The soup alone will make me go back! I ordered one of the nightly specials, the White Fish w/ pico de gallo & it was extremely fresh and very good. Slightly spicy with some jalapeno in the pico... this made me happy! My wife had the Shrimp scampi over rice. She said it was lacking a little something, but couldn't put her finger on exactly what it was. I taste tested & found it very plain. We left stuffed, satisfied with our history tour & will be back!
This a great place to eat if u are up in the woods. The experience Is great. Their is still bullet holes in the walls; news papers of the day it happened. The food is good to. They have a very nice outdoor patio. The view of he lake is amazing.

Voss Birchwood Lodge

Reviews:
I have been to Voss Birchwood Lodge probably 6 or 8 times in the past few years. We keep going back because the place is very Northwoods and the food and service are above average. The place has birch bark décor with mounted fish and deer on the walls. Exactly what you think of when a nicer Northwood's lodge comes to mind. The food swings between average and excellent (this may be dependent on choices, I don't think I have ever ordered the same thing twice). I would recommend the blue cheese stuffed fillet, this definitely peaks the excellent meter! Voss's is accessible by boat on Spider Lake, it is tucked away in a small bay so you need to know where you where you are looking. If you see a white footbridge crossing a bay you have found it. The restaurant is open seasonally. Memorial Day through October 1 or there about. Skiers and snowmobilers are out of luck (too bad).
Our friends who live in the area wanted us to try the Voss restaurant both because of the food and the antique dining room. We enjoyed the depression glass and other very valuable antiques. The food, on the other hand, left much to be desired. My stuffed walleye was bland and the fish had no taste. The buttered red potatoes were a mushy mess, and none of us found them edible. My wife's steak was not a top cut, so was chewy and hard to cut. Our friends had deep fried scallops, which seemed frozen with a breading that overwhelmed the scallop taste. They also were fried too dark. The husband had the "fisherman" and his fish was passable, but the red potatoes were also unedible. The salad was just a common dinner salad, but the cream of mushroom soup was bland and nearly bereft of mushrooms. I might give them a second chance. Finally the service was spotty despite a dearth of diners. We were seated for our 6 pm reservation, and our entrees were presented at 7:15 pm. Don't be in a rush if you choose to eat here. Our friends were devastated after wanting to take us to a great northwoods supper club.
I came here for a special night out and ended up being disappointed. The lodge itself seems like a great place to stay. Moose heads, deer and muskie are found plastered all over the walls of the main sitting room. It's very cozy with the wood fire and the employees were very informative and helpful. Apparently, the woman working the desk has a husband whose grandmother is the person who called the FBI about John Dillinger and he was shot shortly after in the woods nearby. Top that for a fun story! However, my review is strictly for the restaurant. The actual dining room left a lot to be desired. It went from North woods atmosphere in the sitting room to pictures of flowers in the dining hall. Also, the table clothes and chairs made me feel like I was back in the 80s. The waitresses still roll out all food on those noisy carts that squeak as they move around. The prices were fairly high - almost $25 for a steak that was overcooked. My apple pie dessert was definitely store bought and I was hoping for homemade. I really don't have much good to say about the food here. Voss looks like a fun place to stay for a visit but their dinner menu is something to look past. Northern Wisconsin has too many great places to spend hard earned dollars at a place stuck in the past.
