We went here based on Yelp pics & reviews alone for a Friday night. I should've paid more attention to the negative reviews than the positive ones. It's always harder in smaller towns to weigh the high star ratings as there are always such fewer reviews. We walk in and the hostess was playing with her "phone" and looked blankly at us, we then had to ask her for a seat. All of the tables were empty inside. She sat us on the patio as we requested which had a decent crowd, but definitely wasn't full. The other customers were very friendly and many seemed to know each other which was nice. The patio is by far the nicest feature at this restaurant with a great view of the river. Unfortunately we waited over 20min as several waitresses walked by with no drinks offered to us (not even water). Finally my wife went in to ask for service, I almost said we should just leave, as I have done in similar situations. A waitress came out, said she was sorry, and took our drink order for 2 margaritas and two waters. Only brought back margaritas with chips and salsa, NO WATER. We put our order in as soon as she came back with drinks as we feared it may take a while. As she walked away we realized no napkins were ever given to us. A couple who sat after us already had their food when we just got our drinks, while some other couples like us had other waitresses walking by saying "I'm not sure who has you covered". Who says that out loud, and why are you not figuring that out? As we were finishing our ok margaritas and had finished eating some pretty good salsa, the waitress comes out to tell us "the kitchen is backed up, just so you know". She doesn't even say sorry about THEIR issue. Doesn't offer any refills or more chips & salsa. My wife again asks for waters and she finally brings them to us. It's a Friday, you have an empty restaurant with a few people at the bar and a patio that is 3/4 full on a beautiful spring evening, how are you understaffed in both waitresses and in the kitchen? To be honest the amount of waitresses and tables, I don't see how they didn't keep everyone covered, but maybe they had them doing kitchen work to keep up. I get it, people call in, but their attitude was far from apologetic if that was the case. Maybe pull the hostess who is just standing up front on her cell phone and have her help cover with drinks? The bar tender could have easily covered the hostess' job of greeting the few folks walking in. After an hour our food finally came. We were left without silverware and napkins again, so my wife had to finally steal them from another empty table since we didn't know when our waitress would be back. My fish tacos were pretty sub par and my wife's fajitas were worse. Waitress was never back around to ask how things were and my wife had to drink my water since no one came asking how we were on drinks. Having finished our meal she came to ask how the food was, kinda late. I take all leftovers home in hopes of using them in some way, even french fries. This is one of the only times I've said, "it's not worth it". I know and have appreciated small town restaurants that have things that run slow. I still go back to those places if the food is worth it. This wait was beyond slow, and the food we had was nowhere near worth coming back for. It is such a bummer living on a budget going to a place to eat out only to have that be the worst meal you had all week, when you finally go to eat out. Having to wait longer usually we find our taste-buds more accepting of food, so it must have just been that bad. The thing that really ticked me off is we were informed their kitchen was backed up with no apology of any kind, not even after the fact when the bill was brought. It really bums me out having to write a review like this, but I don't want others to make the same mistake.

The place is sort of a Mexican and American joint, and when we went it was (surprisingly) not too crowded, and we were seated immediately, even though we were at least 15-20 minutes early for our reservation. The staff were very friendly and attentive, and had some great recommendations for us. We each had the Caribbean coconut fish fry, which was 6 big pieces of cod breaded in a sort of coconut breading (think coconut shrimp). The breading was not greasy, and was done perfectly. It had a mild, sweet taste to it and, to be honest, actually tasted better just by itself than with their tartar sauce or fish taco sauce (also fantastic!) I've been to many fish fries, and at least as far as fried cod goes, I have never had better than at JC Bogar's. They also have good, chunky guacamole and homemade chips, and they have fish tacos (another big favorite of ours) on the nightly menu; we're gong to come back to try the fish tacos next week. We both left completely stuffed, and with the better part of half a full order for leftovers. The price was more than affordable. In fact, even with tip (generous and well-earned by the great waitress, I should add), I actually spent a few bucks less here than at many of our normal fish fry destinations. Overall - This place is outstanding for a Friday evening (and surely any evening), and we already cannot wait to come back. ***UPDATE: Finally tried the fish tacos, and they definitely lived up to my lofty expectations! The fish were fresh and hot with a great crispy breading, and the diced vegetables were very fresh. Best of all, the tacos come with this fantastic creamy, spicy sauce that you drizzle on top. I find that the coolness of the fresh vegetables worked perfectly with the tasty heat from the sauce. These are some of the best fish tacos I've ever had, and I've tried quite a few.

I took my children for dinner last night. This was our second visit and we enjoyed it! The view and sounds from the patio are very relaxing with the running water from the nearby brook/river. Our server was friendly and checked on the kids often. Although unnecessary, she brought out 2 more sodas for them for when they ran out. The salsa is fresh and spicy! My six year old is not a "chips" fan, but he couldn't keep his fingers out of the basket! The portions were big. I recommend the fish tacos! Nice crunch inside a flour tortilla! My oldest had the fish and chips and enjoyed them very much! I would have liked a vegetable option instead of the chips or fries for a healthier dinner (especially for the kids' meals. .. $5.95 is a bit high for a mini burger and fries, but it looked delicious and the fries were seasoned). I deducted one star because I felt the drinks were on the weak side both times I've visited. Keep the quality of the food fresh and service attentive and we will be visiting this place more often! We wish them much success!

This is a very good restaurant tucked away in Hartland. The Good The food is good... I mean really good. They used to have a much bigger menu, now they have pared it down to 2 pages and still have great choices. Their hamburgers are outstanding. Perfect burger to bun ratio and good buns too! If you're a blue cheese fan, try the blue cheese, onion and bacon burger. One thing you really need to order is the fried peppers. Hand breaded thick slices of sweet red peppers, pablano peppers and onions. This is a BIG order, so come hungry. The dipping sauce is good, and even better when mixed with their salsa verde! They have great chips and salsa too! If the weather is nice, they have one of the nicest outdoor seating areas in the area. A nice view, cold drinks and great food, it's a win all the way around. The Bad Parking can be a little tight, but it's never more than a 3-5 minute walk even with a full lot. The interior is not really large, and live music can be a little overwhelming. But seriously, neither of these would dissuade me from eating here!! The Ugly You should probably ask for half of your order to be immediately placed in a to-go box. It is just too hard to stop eating such tasty food, and the portions are big! It's worth a 30-40 minute drive. so if you're in Milwaukee and want to take a little ride, here a great destination.

We were in the mood for a fish fry tonight. We tried this restaurant out and arrived at 6pm and were seated right away. Ordered food for our kids and fish fry for us. Yummy! I would have to say the panko breaded fish was the best that I have had. Nice and crunchy outside, soft and moist on the inside. Homemade chips to boot! The wait staff was good and they checked on us and made us feel welcome. Living less than two miles from here and not realizing this was so close to home was a shame. Next time I will try the coconut fish!

We've gone here somewhat regularly for fish fry. The trips are usually when we go with the kids. One's a vegetarian and the other is a picky eater and won't eat fish. They easily find other things to eat. The portions are big and the fish is always done right.

Met some friends here for drinks on a Wednesday night. Waitstaff was very friendly and had the opportunity to meet the owner. Our party tried various wings which were very good! I ordered a chicken taco salad without the shell and it was great with some fresh guacamole along side. My husband ordered the chirizo sopes and thought they were delicious. We will definately be back! Can't wait for the weather to cooperate so we can sit on the lovely patio near the river!

Great authentic Mexican! Jose should really advertise this and offer more Mexican selections. Good serving sizes too.

Great food. Some of the BEST fish I've had for a fish fry. Seriously -- I thought it was better than the Seven Seas. Just remember its a bar, and a nice clean one. We'll be back soon to take family. The outdoor seating looked quite inviting, but it was a bit cold yet to be outside.

I lived in AZ for 10 years and finding good Mexican food in WI is hard. This place is pretty darn good! I have been twice in one week! Tuesday nights are the night to go with $4 house margaritas and many food specials! I had two awesome fish tacos, a side of beans and a margarita for $11 and some change! What a bargain! And the chips and salsa to start with are fresh and plentiful. I made it back for a Friday fish fry having heard about it on my previous visit. I had it Caribbean style which has a coconut batter on it. It's served with a mango salsa and you can also ask for a side of habanero orange sauce which I did - delightful! It was a great combination of sweet and spicy. After dinner Jose (the owner) came out of the kitchen and asked how everything was, a nice touch. It's always nice to see an owner operated restaurant I will definitely be back!

JC Bogar's is a nice little find in a little town. Sit outside along what looks like a creek or river. It feels like a nice escape. They have a good breakfast. I got the seafood omelette, and it was enough food for leftovers.

Excellent breakfast. Definitely recommend getting one of the breakfast skillets and eating outside on the patio. Great service. Great food.

I went here early on a Friday morning with mom. She had stumbled across it while riding on her Harley through the Hartland area. She said even though it'd be a bit of a drive, I'd enjoy the breakfast-- so off we went! Like I said it was super early on a Friday and we were the only people in there when we arrived. Our waitress was super friendly which I appreciated. We also met the owner who came out and introduced himself. After we ordered our breakfast the owner (who I presume to be JC) sent out a dish that he was thinking about incorporating into the specials, and he wanted us to try it. We tried it and it was amazing! I ordered a ham, mushroom and cheddar omelet. The ham they used was real ham, none of that pressed junk, and everything was cooked perfectly. The hash browns were perfect, not too crispy but not squishy either. Our waitress was friendly and made sure our coffee cups never got empty. After we were done eating, JC came back out and we talked to him for a few more minutes. It's a cozy place and they have a patio that faces the river. I imagine in summer it would be the perfect place for a quiet date. There's also a bar which we didn't use because we were there in the morning. But I'd imagine it to be the perfect place to settle in and watch a football game. I don't get to come to Wisconsin often but when I do, you better bet I'll be making a special trip to Hartland just to eat here.

This place is just simply awesome. Their food is all good quality, awesome quality meats really make their meals. We went last night for the second time, as we always forget that it's right downtown Hartland. The first time I had their homemade Sangria, which was just amazing. The service was impeccable! Juan himself makes sure everything is great about your meal. My husband hadn't had mole before and he rushed to the kitchen and brought him out a sample. Last night he included roasted jalapenos with my order. He really goes above and beyond to make sure you have a great experience. I had the beef tacos, something I do not usually order at a mexican restaurant, but my pregnant craving called for it. I was blown away with just how good they were. I wasn't expecting them to even be very enjoyable. I just finished off the last one for lunch leftovers today and wished I would have ordered some to go. They do have an outdoor patio with a full bar right on the river, I think it will be very enjoyable in the warmer months and I hope it ends up being a great place for locals as there aren't any patios to enjoy in the Hartland area. I highly recommend it if you are looking for good mexican or even good american dishes, they catered to all. OH and they serve breakfast all day, can't get much better than that!

My husband, brother, and I decided to try JC Bogar's after reading all the great reviews about the fish fry and food. Sadly, the only good item was the fish fry and the coconut fish fry. As we are were seated outside we were told it would be a while before they took our order due to the orders going in.... this was a first for us to hear the kitchen was busy, while the dining area was so empty. We requested the patio area and it was maybe half occupied, not enough to feel the kitchen would be so busy. The area outside was great, but we were seated at a dirty table with 2 ant farms under our table and behind our seats.... we didn't bother to asked to move. Our waiter was nice and took drink orders. He came back within minutes with our drinks and a backer of chips along with two different salsas... the salsa verde was good, not great, but the pico de gallo they served was obviously previously made by a few days. I cook quite a bit and home, including tomato based salsas.... this salsa was old. The tomatoes peeling, onions were soggy... just horrible. Our waiter asked to take our order few minutes later... thought they were too busy? We went ahead and ordered a guacamole appetizer (just in case our food did get delayed) and our entrees. The guacamole came out and I had to stop the waiter to ask him if that was REALLY the guacamole! Again, sad and horribly made... for $6.50 I expected a delicious and appetizer plate of huac. It was probably one small avocado with the same old pico de gallo sprinkled over. My husband took a picture of it because it was so sad looking and not very tasteful with the old pico de gallo. Our entrees came out rather fast. My husband loved his coconut fish fry and my brother liked his cod fish fry, but my fish taco dish was mediocre. The fish was good, but I was turned off to see the soggy pico de gallo was on it and the tortillas breaking as I tried to eat the first taco. I picked out the fish and left the rest of the taco. As for the rice and beans... again not the best. I probably received 4 large tablespoons of watered down refried beans and Mexican rice that wasn't really Mexican rice... it was in clumps. Overall the fish was good and if we ever went back, thats what we would order and recommend to anyone else. My husband and I are foodies and know really good food and this is why we're taking the time to write this and warn others of what we experienced here! ONLY GET FISH FRY!

Came here with my Husband, 10 Month old, and 3 year old. This place has the appearance of a bar and grill. We chose to sit outside as it was a really nice day. The only downside to that I would say is at one point the train came by and it was very loud. But it only lasted a few minutes. Our waitress was super nice. Very attentive. First off we were impressed with the salsa and other dip that was one the table. It was very flavorful and had a nice bite. I got two kids meals and a Reuben for the kids and I. My husband ordered the Pork chimmy. I liked that the kids chicken sticks where not overcooked. I absolutely LOVED my Reuben. Best I've had in awhile. Had to take one star off though because my husband was not at all impressed with his food. I would definitely come here again with a friend, but not with the kiddo's or anyone that's looking to eat Mexican.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
