On a whim, we stopped here for lunch, and I'm glad we did. We'd actually parked in one establishment's lot facing Ferch's, and decided to walk across the street. I had the California turkey breast wrap, which was in a flavored soft tortilla, which was done in a Panini press. So it was a treat for the eyes, as well. Quite tasty, so the taste buds were as happy as the eyeballs. Fries were pretty good, too. But just because it's an ice cream parlor doesn't mean you should buy any packaged stuff to take home. It was the most expensive ice cream or custard I'd ever purchased. They apparently don't sell much packaged stuff, as they didn't even have quart containers. We wound up with 4 pints for almost $17. I usually pay between $8-$12 for a half gallon. I'd go again, I just wouldn't bring anything home.

Meh, burgers were good. Malts were over priced and just below average. For a malt shop I would expect exceptional. Olde fashion soda was ok. The staff was friendly and the place clean. The men's room seat did not stay up, and I read that on another review. My impression is that the owners have given up. I would not recommend.

Wow. Great food and malts. I am really enjoying my bacon ranch wrap and my wife really likes her grilled cheese. The season fries are great as well. Staff is also very friendly.

I wiiiiiiish I would have opted for custard instead of a burger (I wasn't hungry enough for both). The burger was so-so. Looked amazing but needed salt. I didnt care for the grilled onions--they made the burger taste sweet. My dad had a patty melt, which also needed salt. The fries were average as well. But maybe that's just because I'm not a fan of crinkle-cut fries? I would go back to try their custard as well as fried cheese curds, however.

Tried going once and they were closed, so once we finally made it there we were really looking forward to it. It didn't quite live up to that build-up. Prices are a little high and the food was just ok. Cheese fries were tasty, but the burger and wrap we had both severely underwhelmed. Sodas were in tiny glasses - they had free refills, but it was a pain to have to have to go ask for them at the counter. Got a banana dish at the end of the meal and it was Big Bird yellow, which frankly wasn't very appetizing. Overall, I wanted it to be so much more than it was. Kopp's is tastier and much, much cheaper.

Love the old fashion decor. Menu is nice but prices are a little high. The food is tasty. They could use an extra person or two behind the counter for help. It is a fun family place, even had a family gathering there for my son's 15th birthday. All family members enjoyed it.

I love the location, the outdoor seating was very nice. BUT.... Drum roll please.... don't go to the bathroom unless you want to smell sewer. The service was crummy... no pun intended. The food was over priced for the small portion size and the quality. I had a blue cheese burger, it had... maybe....if I was lucky---- a half ounce of cheese. They make you pay extra for LETTUCE AND TOMATO.... ----REALLY?!!! Plus one refill allowed on a tiny coke. Cute place, but not a good value!

Neat place. It definitely has the old-school Malt Shoppe charm. My burger was very good. I had the Pepper Jack Burger and it was spot on. Fries are included and they were prerfectly prepared to a golden crisp. I was hoping to have a Chocolate Malt too but the $5 price scared me off. I asked if they had a smaller portion but they didn't. I suggest they have sizes. My local Malt Shoppe offers 3 sizes: Skinny (1scoop), Double Scoop or Triple Scoop - but that is with ice cream and not WI custard. I'll go back when I'm ready to try a malt. The burger and fries were so much that I didn't really have room for a Malt Shoppe speciality.

Service : 0 stars Walked in with my boyfriend and we were the only customers at the time . I grew up going here but it's been at least a couple years so I didn't know how it worked . Was it order and take a number ( saw number cards ) or was it a sit down ( I saw menus and employees had ordering pads). The employees just sat there and stared at us . We asked to sit outside and they said we couldn't they weren't serving outside today ? It was 80 , sunny and clear blue sky's . We kinda stood there baffled and after a minute they said if we ordered to go then we would get a number and we could go outside . We ordered and they never gave us our number . We were left sitting there staring at mute employees once again . After several minutes they said just go outside well bring it to you . So as to answer your question I still don't know if it's a sit down place or a order and wait for you food by the counter , or a order and they'll bring it to you ? Remember how I said we were the only two there .... The food took about 30 - 35 min to be made and brought out . We got chicken tenders and fries . Besides the awkwardly unfriendly mute unhelpful slow service .... I give the food 4 stars . It is a little pricy ( a shake for $7) but it's still worth it . The shake and malt list is huge , with a whole page full of options . The food is cooked well and the side sauces for the chicken tenders were good . I don't know what it is but they have my favorite chicken tenders of all time . It's definitely a step up from a typical diner. The atmosphere has a cute retro style to it . There is tons of seating inside and outside . They also keep water outside with bowls for dogs ! They have long hours and are open later for dinner in the summer . I believe you can rent out the side room as well ; it would be cute for kids birthday parties . All around the service and staff really brought my review rating to two stars. Going through other yelp reviews it's apparent that the service isn't great and it seems they aren't doing anything to fix that . Being the only two people in there gives them no excuse to have the food take that long . Also with weather conditions and the time of year , there's no reason to refuse outside service . I would maybe recommend going if you have at least an hour or two on your hands . If not call ahead and carry out :) I normally wouldn't return back for such bad service but the food is worth it and if you have kids they'll love it .

I been wanting to go here for a long time and was highly disappointed. First service was slow, very slow. Second the home made drinks they create are very weak in flavor, for the price you pay they should be flavorful and have at least one free refill or worth the price they charge. Third the price on the food was high so I thought it would be flavorful and very well made, wrong it was bland and the only thing that saved it was the bun. I had to add Ketchup cause my burger was so dry. We left with out getting ice cream cause I didn't want to waste anymore cash in this place. Red Robin has better burgers for the same price.

Came here for the first time in many years. We moved away and recently moved back to greendale. This place now, is absolutely nothing like it used to be. The staff used to be happy!! What happened? The prices were affordable! Last night I ordered the white chocolate cake special, it was $6. First it mentioned nothing of cherries, but had an overwhelming cherry flavor, my daughter refused to eat it so $6 down the drain. Secondly for $6 I only received one scoop, and it was a VERY TINY SCOOP. The scoop was equivalent of an extra large egg. Then we also ordered a malt. How can you mess up a malt right??!! Wrong. The malt was thin like milk. I am all about supporting local business, and for these prices, the local custard shop on 76th and Layton will receive my business going forward. Such a shame, I used to love this place!!

I really wish I could eat here. The location is perfect. But every time I come in, I can see the kitchen staff isn't wearing gloves. And the kids working in the fountain area handle cash then handle food without washing hands or putting on gloves. Some of the workers wear sandals (imagine dropping a knife on your foot). Finally, there is no real organization in their ordering system. The cashiers make the custard treats and you never know if someone is coming back to one of the two cash registers. It seems the only reason they have any business is because of the fantastic location in the Village of Greendale. If only it was managed properly, this place could be a real asset to Greendale. And could make more money for the Ferchoff family.

  • Aliyeh L.

It's very over priced here. Food is very basic and bland but the prices would make you think it's something special. I understand why though, this is an ice cream place only in my eyes. They have great great custard. Staff if very friendly just as far as I can see overworked. If you are looking for a place with great dessert only, go here. If you're looking for a sandwich or salad, steer clear.

  • Brad S.

They're the only place around taking the Cold Stone Creamery approach to custard, offering a laundry list of mix-ins and flavorings to customize your confection. Ever wonder what watermelon-flavored custard tastes like? Wonder no more, because it's not very good, as is probably the case for any of those flavored syrups they try and mix into the custard. Thankfully, the vanilla actually comes out of the churn that way, and while it's not in the upper pantheon of Milwaukee custard, it's a suitable contender for any casual summer night that you happen to find yourself in the creepy seclusion of downtown Greendale.

You can't make a mistake picking anything from here. The ice cream combinations are endless! I love everything from here, the food and ice cream.

I've been to Ferch's before, but after my last visit, I'm not sure there will be a return. Order at the bar when you've got a dining room? Well, sure as long as there are people dedicated to working the cash registers to take orders. We waited in line and a gentleman ahead of us was very perturbed that the lady who was taking orders at one register did not return after her last customer, so he was then stuck at the head of a non-line. I see his point. It seems there is very little organization to how things are run here, leading to long waits, poor execution, and mistakes. We ordered our burgers, got our ticket with a number for the Pick Up window, and sat down. After a long wait, my number was called and incorrect burgers were presented to me as being mine. After verifying that my burgers did not come with either bacon or avocado the kitchen then started making my correct order. Watching the disorder in the kitchen; this place is like the before version of a Kitchen Nightmares episode. Slow, unorganized, inaccurate. Got our burgers and there's no mustard or ketchup on them, and no mustard on any of the tables. There's no silverware to be seen, (or even plasticware), to cut the burger in half. We ate our burgers and it was a fine burger. Had the Greendale and the sweet relish paired well with the fresh jalapenoes. But Kopp's is less than 0.5 mi away, and they're cranking out burgers and custard like nobody's business! We would've gotten custard here, but then there was a long line and why bother with more frustration? I noticed one comment on Yelp about the men's bathroom being filthy and the toilet seat not staying up, and sure enough, he was right, and it had yet to be fixed. I'm sure Ferch's has its niche of locals who like the restaurant's theme of a simpler slower time.

Throwback vibe. Cute old fashioned malt shop gets overshadowed by the extremely painful wait times. There is literally one person serving in s huge dining room and in the main room. In addition this poor dude is taking all the orders and making all the drinks and custom ice cream orders. There is one dude in the kitchen. Clearly there's not enough staff to keep up with the orders. It's been nearly 25 min for a small turtle Sunday. Boo. I've watched three different groups of people walk out and two other groups ask where there order is. It's a bummer because it's super cute and close to work.

The food is good here, but service generally sucks! They just recently expanded and lord help you if you're sitting in the new area - it takes forever to bring your food! By the time the food came, the ice cream was melted. The server explained they couldn't find us - what?! If you ignore the service, the Asian chicken lettuce wrap is good and the sundaes are yummy. Finally, if it's busy, the set up isn't good to accommodate the crowd. You end up snaking into the eating area while you wait to order.

  • Richard S.

I have never had anything but Frozen Custard here so I can't give them 5 Stars. That being said, Ferch's Frozen Custard is my favorite Frozen Custard around. I love all the mix-ins, but my favorite treat is a simple Chocolate/Peanut Butter Malt! They are Wheelchair accessible and the staff has always been friendly and helpful!

  • Rick H.

For the price it is only worth 3 stars. I would give it more and eat there more often if their prices were more in line with the quality of the food. Their food is good, but not great. I have eaten here a handful of times and tried the burgers, wraps, and chicken sandwiches. None of them jump out at me as must haves. However, it is a good all around option to the fast food choices in and around Southridge Mall (with a couple of exceptions). But for a 5 star burger at a better price I would eat at Kopps. For a 5 star chicken sandwhich at a better price eat at Chic-Fil-A. If you want good food for a variety of different eaters - Ferch's is a good option.

Yeah, this place screams 50's diner. Yeah, they have delicious ice cream and food. Yeah, the location is in beautiful historic downtown Greendale. Yeah, there is no reason why you shouldn't come here. I do have one complaint: the price, which you're obviously paying for not the food but the environment. A shake, soda, and two meals was $30 with tip. Not a cheap lunch whatsoever. If you're coming here after a day walking around or at the mall, be sure to double check that you have enough to pay here.

This is a really cool retro diner in the historical downtown area of Greendale. We went there for some ice cream sundaes, but were surprised that the regular food was good as well. My girlfriend and I each got a wrap (Buffalo Chicken & Caesar) and thought they were above average. The service was really friendly as well, and the ice cream sundaes delivered as I expected them too. A good and inexpensive date place, I would say. Check it out. The Franklin location is good too, but the Greendale location has more atmosphere and old-time feel. It's the original.

Solid, solid burger. Any place that toasts their hamburger buns always starts with a leg up for me. I wanted the guacamole and bacon burger, but they were out of guacamole (on a not-to-busy Saturday lunch hour?! Come on, man...). So I wound up getting the pepper-jack burger. It was a good burger with plenty of toppings (bacon, peppers, thick ring of raw onion). However, I found the bun too thick - to the point where it made the digestive process a bit dry. I had to dip the sandwich in ketchup to ease the process. A shame because the burger on its own was great. Loved the sweet potato fries. I definitely recommend that you get a side of them with your sandwich. As I do with every custard shop, I get vanilla custard mixed with Oreo cookies in a waffle cone. I can't remember the details of how it tasted, but I do remember almost getting into an accident because I refused to put it down while I was driving home. Solid four stars for me and would love to go back. Being in Greendale, this place is a good 20-25 minute drive away from my house and with other stellar burger options nearby (Kopp's, Sobelman's, Five Guys, Wendy's (shutup), and Trocadero), this would have to be a lunch trip while shopping at Southridge or something.

We had a great lunch, burgers, hot dog and BLT. Ice cream for dessert. We were all pleased with the food and service. Sat outside and enjoyed the great weather. Thank you Ferch's for the wonderful lunch!

I like coming to Ferch's because it's like stepping back in time. Cute little cozy place with stools at the counter and a handful of booths. Food is really good, portions are big and the prices are pretty reasonable. I like the cold stone mixing of what you want with your custard, I highly recommend the blueberry and cheesecake combo but you put anything with cheesecake and I'm all over it.

Ferch's is tucked away in a little strip mall, close to Southridge Mall so I often forget this place as a lunch stop since it Kopps isn't far away. While Kopps is still my favorite, I definitely recommend checking out Ferch's. It has an old malt shoppe feel to the interior. You order at the bar and if it isn't busy, they'll bring it out to your table. By the way, the staff is always incredibly friendly. Anyways, on to the meal. The burger itself is great. The meat is juicy and does NOT have that charbroiled taste which I despise in a burger. Decent size, soft bun, with plenty of toppings options. I personally add 1000 Island Dressing to the cheeseburger. The burger comes with fries but I'm not a fry-person so I pay the extra $1.00 for onion rings. The o-rings aren't anything special though. I could find the same kind of onion rings in the freezer section of the grocery store. But I'm really not complaining. They taste just good but just nothing too special about them. Ferch's has a great malt and ice cream selection, but I'm usually too full from the burger for ice cream!

  • Dan R.

I'll start by echoing another reviewer who said the experience was underwhelming. When I first walked in, I sat at the bar and expected to receive a greeting and a menu. Instead, one of the two waitresses had her back to me making ice cream and the other finished her lunch next to me. Once I realized orders were placed at the register service got better. But everyone else who walked in was immediately greeted, and those who sat at the bar were all given menus. Hmm. Since it's a 50's style fountain shop, I expected a pretty phenomenal burger. I was completely under impressed. I ordered the mushroom swiss add bacon. The mushrooms were canned and disgusting. The swiss had no flavor. The bacon was paper thin and lacked character. The onion bun was interesting, but not exactly the best tasting when considered with the rest of the sandwich. I won't be going back.

Ferch's is really fun. It's an old time malt shop. The custard is very good and they can flavor it for you, with tons of different syrups. The food is okay. The soft pretzels are really good, because they are deep fried and served with a delicious cheese sauce. The garlic fries are also very good. This place is all about the custard and the experience of the traditional malt shoppe.

  • Dawn A.

Yum Yum Yum! The custard is great, especially when made into a shake. I also ordered a buffalo chicken wrap which was dynamite! Huge serving, very flavorful, and the slaw on it made it come together so nicely. I had never been before, and will definitely come back!

  • Jennie M.

The custard at Ferch's is amazing! It's as good as Kopp's or any of the other custard places, but it's even better because essentially you can create whatever custard flavor you want when you make one of their marble tops. You choose a custard flavor (there are probably 20 choices or maybe more) and then you can also choose an additional add in (again, tons of choices). They then make it right in front of you and hand over your freshly made custard! No more waiting for your favorite flavor of the day! As an example of what you can get, I ordered chocolate malt custard with Reeses peanut butters cups and my dad ordered NY cheesecake with caramel. Amazing! Go! Right now! It's great! We also ordered a burger and fry basket. It was pretty good. Nothing really special about the burgers (in terms of taste) although they have some pretty interesting options (mine was a swiss, bacon and avocado). The fries were nice and hot. If you go during the summer, you can sit outside. It's very pretty with hanging baskets behind the seating area which lead into a small but pretty park. Also, if you go during the day you can check out the shops of Greendale or the interesting 'greenbelt' neighborhoods nearby. Just go!

I really love this quaint little 50's style malt shop. I have been here on many occasions for custard and enjoy it everytime, but actually went in for food the other day. I was shocked at how good there wraps were and of course the healty amount of onion rings I got. This is just one of those places in Milwaukee county that you need to try at some time. Go, have a dish of custard and enjoy.

This old school Malt Shoppe also has Excellant Burgers. I had the Bacon and Guacamole. It could give any of the big name burger joints around the city a run for their money. Along with an order of Sweet Potato Fries and a Chocolate Malt, I was in heaven during lunch. I will definiely be recommending Ferch's whenever I am asked where to find a good burger.

  • Kristina S.

Ferch's used to be half a block from my Greendale Original townhouse. That's a dangerous thing for one's pant size. Ferch's is SO much better than any old Cold Stone stuff. This is custard folks, not ice cream. And if you don't know the difference, you betta ask somebody! Can someone please bring me a key lime cheesecake in a waffle cone, with a side of chocolate malt? I wish they delivered to Chicago. :( Oh, and their food is mighty tasty too. Just leave room for marble-top!

I have fond memories of this place... ahhhh... childhood... When I was little my friends and I would walk here during the summers and raid the candy counter they used to have. We'd often top that off with a rootbeer float and be in sugar-high heaven. And it was here that I discovered that adding strawberry Skittles to 7Up does NOT equal a tasty strawberry 7up. In middle school Ferch's was THE place. Within walking distance of what was then called Greendale Intermediate School, any 12 or 13 year old could grab their burgers, fries and ice cream for a super healthy lunch. It was peer pressure at its finest - if you were cool you went to Ferch's. If you wanted to pretend to be cool you went to Ferch's. If you absolutely failed to be cool at all you still went to Ferch's. Eventually "downtown" Greendale was spruced up and Ferch's transformed into what it is today. They now serve cold slab ice cream and have seriously expanded their menu from what I grew up with. The food is pretty standard, but it's great to see a place like still thriving amongst all the Cold Stones of the world.

My favorite place growing up, still a place I will drive two hours to go to in a heartbeat. Well, maybe a little less now that gas prices are a little slice of hell. I will never forget getting hot fudge sundaes there after Twi-Nite baseball at Jaycee Park down the street. A really amazing place.

  • Victor S.

Love their marble top. So many flavors, choices and toppings, but also wonderful weekend greasy goodness on their menu. I first came to this place when I was younger and hanging with childhood friends. Had no idea I would end up forgetting the name until about 5 years later when I would start frequenting the place after searching it on the Internet. The only setback: it's a little on the pricey side (especially for once again, a broke college student), but I think the environment, location, and history this place has in Greendale will forever make up for it.

Awesome! Same prices but much better and more quaint then Kopps.
