We found out about St. Martins Inn through an article in the Journal Sentinel. We live in Illinois, but I have been nothing but disappointed in Illinois's version of "Fish Fry" (if you can even call it that). So, we decided it was worth the hour and a half drive up to Franklin, WI for some actual fish fry. This is by far the best fish fry I've had in YEARS. The place is tiny, and it is no secret that they have the best fish fry around. We waited for a table for an hour and a half (granted, it was during Lent). Boy oh boy was it worth the wait AND the long drive. The haddock was perfectly crisp on the outside and moist and flaky on the inside. The potato pancakes and apple sauce were as tasty as could be. The tartar sauce was most likely made from scratch. To top it all off, the clam chowder was the best I've had in the Midwest. It was full of fresh thyme and red skin potatoes. Yum! The prices are also great. It was $10 and some change for a plate of fish, potato pancakes, rye bread, coleslaw, tartar sauce and applesauce. My only complaint is as follows....they don't have Spotted Cow on tap. We LOVE Spotted Cow, and we can't get it in IL, so we always look forward to having it on tap when we visit WI.

A popular gem located in the historic hamlet of St. Martin's (Franklin) WI. One of the best fish fries I've ever had. Excellent food, great drinks (including their Brandy Old Fashion) and courteous staff. Get there by 4 pm on Fridays to avoid the rush. If you arrive late, enjoy a cocktail or several until your table is ready. The potato pancakes are super. Well, everything is actually. Tip: Order a knackwurst along with your fish fry, and perhaps a few breaded shrimp.

You really should probably just stop reading and go to Brian M's review. yelp.com/biz/wegners-st-… There. He's spot on. This place is THE definition for Wisconsin Fish Fry. Cheap drinks, friendly service. Busy takeout window. 45 min to 1 hr wait. And everyone does just that. Waits! This place is small. It gets very crowded. But I gotta tell ya, once we got seated I was watching the door and everyone kept cramming in, and no one left! This to me is the definition of a great Fish Fry. I opted for the perch. It was the best perch I've had in awhile. The german potato salad was perfect. I'm hungry thinking about it now! Go to here. This is a great place to bring your out of town guests to get the full WI Fish Fry experience. But be warned - there will be a wait!

Well, what have we here, tucked away in the middle of nowhere? Sadly, a funeral brought me out this way, but happily, life goes on, and we thought we'd stop on the way back home and toast my high school friend and trumpet playing bandmate, CC. We walked into the well lit room, their holiday party was going on, but we were welcomed to stay and have a drink. We ended up chatting with the owner's parents, a very charming couple! And then we got the low down on this unassuming little joint. The chef is the former exec chef at Mader's. If you area Milwaukeean, or if you've ever been there, you know THIS IS CRED. The place has been written up in Saveur for their fish fry, WHAT?! We only had a beer on this night, but we will be back, oh yes, we will be back for those delicious little fish fry morsels.

The food is excellent, prices are great, people are friendly. We have eaten there for Friday fish fry several times and enjoyed it but never went on any other night to try their German food which they are known. I had Jaeger Schnitzel. Never had it before but I loved it! It was so beaded port that was lightly breaded, tasty, tender and not greasy - yum!! There is plenty of food so I will have the leftovers for lunch tomorrow! The side salad was the best I have ever had. It had onion, cucumber, mushrooms, onions, tomatoes, and some little crunchies on a bed of greens. No iceberg lettuce here just lots of greens and goodies! Drink prices are great! You cannot go wrong at this local, family owned restaurant. The owner is the chef. It is not fancy but the food is phenomenal! They had several specials the night we were there that were not of German origin (steak, mahi, mahi as examples) so you can have your choice of several different items. My husband had delicious veal parmesan. Try it you - will love it!

Best Friday Fish Fry in the area, very casual and friendly! Enjoy a beer while you wait for a table or for your pickup order! #SoMuchFun

Fantastic experience. Great food, great service, and great atmosphere. I ordered the German Sampler and loved it. I recommend especially the Wiener Schnitzel, Spätzel, and red cabbage. My German companion says that everything was very authentic, if that is important to you.

I've been going here off and on for years and I have never had a bad meal or sub-par service. There are a few things to note: *Stopping in without a reservation can mean waiting up to an hour or more for a table. The place is small, with a tight dining room and some tall round tables in the bar area. *The specials are amazing but certain foods will run out fast so try to show up for dinner prior to 8 *The employees are all super friendly and inviting *Parking can be an issue The German fare is pretty authentic in taste partly due to the chef being a former employee of Mader's. The prices are more reasonable than Mader's. While the presentation may not be that of a fine dining establishment, the food is always delicious and prepared exactly as you have ordered it.

After one visit, this place is at the top of my fish fry recommendation list. That atmosphere is totally old school south side fish fry place. You can tell the owners have put a lot of their passion into the place -- it's decorated with all sorts of NASCAR memorabilia and model cars. Very casual. We went on a Friday night and had a bit of a wait -- I think just about a half hour. After a few minutes, we were able to grab some extra chairs between the bathroom and bar to at least sit and enjoy a drink while we waited. The Old Fashioneds were strong (in a good way) and really inexpensive. We were seated at a high top and had a very friendly and attentive waitress. I though the fish fry prices were a little on the high side, compared to some other places (most options seemed to be in the $12-15 dollar range), but completely worth it. I had a sampler platter with haddock and perch (one breaded, one battered), and my friend had the sampler that I think included shrimp, both with potato pancakes (which had been recommend). The portion sizes were pretty generous. The fish was great -- both the batter and breading were crispy, it wasn't overly oily or "fried" tasting, and the fish was perfectly done and nice and hot when it got to the table. I usually can't finish a large fish fry but I ate every piece. The coleslaw and rye bread were both decent, but fairly typical. The real star, though, was the potato pancakes. SO GOOD. Perfectly seasoned, crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. Since we went, I've recommended this place to four other people and they all loved it too. Now I just need them to go back with me!

A hidden gem. Definitely recommend the fish fry. Home-made Clam Chowder was surprisingly excellent!! Friendly service. Only negative was it seemed like it took a while for our food to arrive.

I went to a graduation party at Wegner's a couple of years ago. They provided the catering, and I was impressed with the food, in particular the tender sliced beef. The menu is primarily made up of German dishes because the chef used to be the chef at Mader's and it shows. The food I had was solid. I've been told that this place had a great fish fry, so it's been on my list to try for at least a year, and I finally made it in last week. The perch fish fry is available on Wednesday nights, but Friday nights offer more selections. Besides the hand-breaded perch, you can also choose from beer battered haddock, steamed haddock, pan seared orange roughy, cajun style salmon filet, fried shrimp, fried scallops or a combination of some of the items, served with your choice of German potato salad, fries, or homemade potato pancakes. I ordered the hand-breaded yellow lake perch dinner with potato pancakes and apple sauce. Creamy cole slaw and the softest and freshest rye bread I've had anywhere were also included. The pile of perch was abundant. The fish was perfectly cooked with a white flaky center and crisp breaded coating, not the least bit greasy. The fish was so good, I didn't need the tarter sauce. However I did taste it to let you know that it was also good. The potato pancakes were also among the best I've had. Crispy on the outside and tender inside with the right amount of seasoning. There was nothing I would change. It was, in my opinion, the perfect fish fry and very likely the best fish fry I've had. My friend ordered a fried shrimp and scallop dinner. He enjoyed his dinner very much, but he shared a fried scallop with me, and I thought it had a fishy flavor. So I can't be confident the rest of his shrimp and scallops were cooked properly, otherwise I'd be giving this place 5 stars. The dining room only has seven tables of 4 seats and the bar area has 5 or 6 high tops with 2 stools, so if you're going on a Friday, get there between 4 and 4:30 or after 8:00. The other nights of the week, they take reservations. The atmosphere is very much that of a small "townie" bar, but the food would hold its own against the German restaurants in Milwaukee. I definitely plan to go back to try the German dinners and would recommend the perch fish fry in a heart beat. Wegner's is worth the drive.

What a gem of a restaurant! We were looking for dinner, driving back to Chicago from a day hiking in the Northern Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Park and turned to Yelp to find a place along our route. Wegner's blew us away with both food quality and charm. The hostess/manager was lovely and you could tell this was a local place where everyone knows everyone else (except us haha). Good beer and wine list, amazing schnitzel, and great cajun salmon as well. We'll definitely be back!

As much a function of there being nothing much of note in Franklin as it is the actual food, Wegner's is a fish fry institution. There's not a lot I can say here that hasn't been said before: cheery service, crazy busy at peak times, (though not so bad if you're willing to eat a little early), and admirable potato pancakes. I liked how the Icelandic cod got a heavier beer battering while the lake perch was just fried in panko, though the overall lack of salt and the grease slick on the bottom of my plate indicate that they still very much abide by an old-school method of cooking. And drinking, judging by the two taps of Hofbrau Munchen. Certainly among the better fish frys I've visited, though the lines out the door can tell you that a lot more definitively than this review.

If you can go when this place is not too busy, its a great experience. My sister and I went one Thursday afternoon. I had their lunch special for that day. It was delicious and I was able to get a side of spatzels instead of french fries. How refreshing to have something you can't get everywhere else. Service was perfect! Because we lingered after eating they asked if we could move to allow a large group at our location. So we moved to bar area and staff kept coming by to offer a refill on our iced tea (which was very good & apparently fresh). I've gone there before and had their steak and fish fry, both of which are very good.

So, we aren't in-advance reservation types. On NYE, no less, we rolled the dice (by driving in potentially crud weather) and headed to some Steak House off Loomis at about 5:30 figuring "who would be at that place this early?" Well, everyone that lives in Greenfield it seems. So, after being turned away due to a "9:30 at the earliest" flick-o-the-tongue from the hostess we headed to Wegner's. I'm glad it turned out his way. Wegner's, as attested to by previous Yelpers, is a comfy little North Woods-Nascar-y joint located in, well, sort of the North Woods (its technically Franklin but pretty secluded). When we got there the snow was beginning to fall at a good clip and I was confident that we'd eat and be home before any serious weather assaulted us. The only "icky" experience of the night (besides the weather and I'll get to that) was the beginning. Asked if we had a reservation and answering no, the hostess (possibly owner) said she would seat us in a few. So, we waited in the bar area by the door because we weren't interested in loading up on drinks especially with the weather looming foul. This wait took about 10 minutes and after contemplating leaving we shifted to excited thinking we'd score a table in the dining room. WRONG! We were steered to the bar area to one of those high tables with backless stools. I HATE THOSE. THE MENU WAS "SPECIAL FOR NEW YEAR'S EVE" featuring Prime Rib, Filet, and some other dishes I didn't burn to memory after seeing Prime Rib and Filet. Both Lindsey O and myself ordered the Filet. For about 20 bucks or so I must say it was pretty darn good. In fact, it was pretty darn good. The sauteed mushrooms were excellent, salad had homemade blue cheese dressing that was very good. So, for under $60 bucks on NYE we had a pretty darn good meal and the vibe of the place made for an unassuming albeit pleasant evening. On the ride home the roads were so bad I slid through the intersection at HWY 36 and HWY 100 and, owing to my mad driving skills and more than a touch of grace from above, managed to make a right turn in between oncoming cars and was safely guided to a driveway to turn around and head back North. Wegner's, we will see you again soon to try your Fish Fry and German Fare. And next NYE will be begun with a reservation. Or, two.

We went for seafood on Good Friday and Wenger was the place to be! At 430 we waited for a table for about 40 minutes and considering how packed it was everybody was pleasant. Waitress was quick and very helpful on what was the best items on the menu. Would highly recommend.

Fish Fry Fans Unite!! So,... you say you want to stand 6-deep at a bar for about an hour and a half whilst burly "well seasoned" waitresses (probably named "Starla" or "Darlene") push through you with ginormous platters of deep fried pescatarian goodness? No? How about if I told you that if you ever had their potato pancakes, you would probably agree to sell your soul for the recipe? No? Still not convinced? How about if I told you that they sometimes have random $2 German imports? Starting to come around?? What if I told you that the place had all of the charm of a Southside Milwaukee Nascar lover's basement rec-room? Oh, now you are starting to come around. How about if I mentioned that this place is totally out in the sticks of St. Martin? wait... I might lose some of you with that one. How about if I said flat out that this was one of the most enjoyable fish fries I have ever had in the greater Milwaukee area? I should know. I'm over 40 and have always lived in Milwaukee. I was brought up Catholic and my parents thought that by eating fish frys during Lent, you were somehow getting away with something. Please trust me on this when I say that it is worth the drive to check it out. Clearly, this place is no secret. When I say this place place is packed on Fridays, I mean it is packed like an airplane toilet after a six hour charter flight from Mexico. Ain't no more going in! Is it really worth the wait? Yes. Yes, and Yes. Bring some friends, order yourselves some Old Fashioneds (Brandy/sweet, of course), and enjoy the people watching. Ever wonder where all of the St. Fair people go during the rest of the year? Well, I think they come here. The menu changes during the rest of the week. I really need to get back and try their German specialties. If it is half as good as the fish fry, then the schnitzel is probably worth the drive too!

An unexpected great meal. Franklin is a food desert, however this place knows what they are doing; cooking delicious quality dishes, served hot, with a local Wisconsin atmosphere. This place is real. We showed up on a Wednesday night with our 2 week old newborn. I was hungry so I ordered the Ruben Rolls for an app, a cup of chili and a cup of the Ruben soup, the salad with the hot bacon dressing, the beef rouladen with spaetzels and red cabbage, with a side car of potato pancakes. I ate everything, my favorites were the Ruben rolls, the ruben soup and the hot bacon dressing salad. I also stole a couple of bites from my girls fish fry. I don't even like fish and I have never ordered a fish fry, but I will be certain to come back and try the fish fry. It was that good. The service was exceptional. The hostess helped us with the child and had us seated quickly. Our waitress was also prompt, friendly and a great representative of the food. This is my new go to local rest rant.

Wegner's St. Martins Inn has the decor of a local bar that loves racing. It also has the chef of an established legacy German restaurant. I've been to Wegner's on multiple occasions and have never been disappointed. Think Mader's or Karl Ratzsch's at half the price. The German food is amazing. The bar has at minimum a couple of import German Biers as well (Hofbrau Oktoberfest and Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse last time) to enjoy with your meal. They have the Wursts, they have the Wiener Schnitzel and they have Rouladen. The staff is very friendly and more than helpful. It's a bit off the beaten path but if your in it for the food, it's well worth the trip.

I used to come here for the fish fry but it's been so long I can't review it. I came here with a group of about 12 people. They split us into two tables which was fine. My issue was the service from the hostess. Or maybe she wasn't even the hostess. It was whomever sat us. We asked about the specials she said she didn't know the specifics but if we wanted to know we should walk over to the bar area and read them. A bit snarky but maybe she was having a bad day. One of our friends was the only person at her table without her order. Someone mentioned that to the "hostess" and she replied that obviously her food wasn't ready because if it was it would be at the table. Well thank you Captain Obvious. Is this an Ed Debevic shtick? I dine out a ton as do most yelpers. I will never go here again. No food is worth such negativity.

There are two ways to look at Wegner's - it's a great fish fry place on Fridays and a great German food place the rest of the week. As a fish fry place, it is crowded, noisy and way too small for the number of people who are waiting for a table. And you must be aware that the tall bar tables are not available as they are used to seat people for dinner. The fish fry is worth the wait. Especially the perch. And the potato pancakes are perfectly delicious. Even the cole slaw sets itself apart from others. The decor is early redneck (I mean NASCAR) which is a turn-off (boring) so there's not much of a view while you wait. On Fridays the waitresses are hit or miss considering how busy it is, it's not surprising that they might be a little cranky. On a weeknight, it's much more relaxed and worth a trip back. The crowd is more subdued, and everyone is less stressed. The German specials are always fantastic. The wine list is not great, but what they do have is reasonably priced. I love the chicken piccata. It is fantastic. My husband loves that they have many pork specials and all are done so well. The thing you need to know is that if you want to sit at the tables in the restaurant, you should probably make a reservation. If you don't you could end up at a tall table at the bar, otherwise. We go here every few months, and it is always worth it. In fact, the carry-out fish fry is a nice alternative to waiting for a table on a Friday.

  • John G.

The only pain here is the long wait for a table. The fish fry and sides were outstanding. Our server was very attentive. The friends we ate with showed up long before us and I think the total wait on a Friday night is about an hour. As far as I know, they do take out or pick up fish fry as well. The ambiance is kind of North Woodsy with natural paneling which I liked. I will return. I heard the German food is very good on nights other than Friday which is clearly the Milwaukee Fish Fry crowd.

I have to agree with most of the reviews listed here. Wegner's is the real deal for fish fries. We had the lake perch and the haddock. The perch is the best. Seasoned and breaded to perfection. The haddock tasted great, but I am not a big fan of the type of breaking used for the haddock. It is a batter and tends to get a little oily. The potato pancakes were first rate. Homemade and flavored well. We had a cup of clam chowder which was really good for the Midwest. Plenty of food at a reasonable price. YOU WILL WAIT! However, it is worth it. I will return for some German food next.

There is a King in town. Wegner's. The perch fish fry is nearly the most perfect meal made. My wife thought the tartar sauce was almost bitter, and when I tasted it alone, I had to agree. If the apple sauce had been home-made it would have been a perfect-pitch game. The fish is the most perfected application of hot oil to battered fish possible. Crunchy, flakey, moist, and not greasy. Some of may favorite slabs of fish fry can squirt some oil at you on occasion. Not at Wegner's. The cook must examine each batch with care. Oh, and the presentation! Each piece of fish was curled the same way in an ark across the plate. A perfectly plated fish fry is only the end result of a perfectionist in the kitchen. The potato pancakes are ideal. I never picked up my lemon wedge. The fish was perfect.

Just what Yelp needs....a review of a fish fry place by someone who can't abide fried fish. Here are some things to know if you hit up Wegner's for their acclaimed FFF (fish fry Friday for any out-of-staters). 1. It's crowded. Insanely crowded - like, "sea of humanity" crowded. 2. You will wait. Probably for a good, long while. No matter where you stand, you will be in the way. 3. If you don't like fish, they have exactly ONE thing for you - knockwurst. So you'd better like that. (Cue Fast Times scene "...and the lady will also have the knockwurst and a Coke with no ice") 4. It's cheap - five dinners and a few beers + drinks = $80 5. I can't review the fish fry, but Hubs the perch and was very happy with it, and the rest of my party had raptures over their plates. 6. Potato pancakes. You must order them, because they are among the best I've had. They were so good that I considered eating nothing else for the rest of my days, resulting in me turning into Jabba the Hut and bellowing "oogachacka Solo Potato Pancakes, BRING ME, bwahaha". 7. The whole place is NASCAR themed, up to and including the switch plates in the ladies room. 8. Despite the unrelenting crowds, the staff here is unfailingly pleasant - don't know how they do it. If you're a fish fry buff, this place should be on your short list.

This is the best fish fry around, hands down! I have tried a lot of them, and this is the one I now crave. The potato pancakes are perfect. The fish was great, especially the perch. Drinks were average price. The wait was an hour, but the people working there we pleasant. Its worth the wait!

Was looking for some German food close to our office in Milwaukee - found this place. Drove out for some lunch - it was Friday - they had their fish fry going so decided to try. Was fantastic!! Their orange roughy was fantastic!! Not many places carry fresh orange roughy - this was well prepared and just right. Will have to go back this week and try their German fare. I'll report back after I try it.

Last review I did of Wegner's I said that this was the best fish fry in Wisconsin. I've now changed this to the best fish fry......in the WORLD!!!! The yellow lake perch is delicious, and always served piping hot. Service is great. Owners are always there and very friendly. You have to try this place. It's the only place we'll go for a fish fry. They serve lunch from 11:30-2:00 which we found is a good time to go. Evenings get very busy and you need to be there early. Turnaround time is quick though so don't let this scare you away.

Very good perch. I am always on the look out for the perfect perch fish fry--have yet to find it in the Milwaukee metro area. While it was not perfect--I think the breading could be a bit finer--it is one of the best in area.

I went here for the friday night fish fry with my mom. I thought it would be a cool new place to try with the great reviews. EH, I was wrong. They employees are rude and only cause about the "regulars" who come every week. It is small and loud. we had to eat right next to the bar. the food was really greasy but the haddock was really good. thats about the only thing. We had two beers on tap - $9. The fish fry is $10-12 depending on which one you get. Overall it was just okay....

Awesome fish fry on Friday night. We got there at 6pm and waited at the bar for about 40mins. The wait wasn't that bad, and we even had our 6 month old with us. The hostess was a little short with me, but service was quick and friendly once we were seated. Fish= excellent fresh haddock. delicious batter and fresh tasting. Tarter Sauce= great. Cole Slaw= traditional mayonaisse cole slaw, not great, not bad. Potato Pancake= tasty but very fried potato-ey, almost like a hash brown. Hacker Pschorr beers on tap= great. Ambiance= really fun. Bar/supper club scene of all ages. Still craving it days later and will be returning when in Milwaukee. Highly recommended.

Here is a little family owned sports type bar and restaurant with some of the most fantastic food you have ever tasted at great prices. Come back twice and they will probably remember your name. If you like great German food you are especially in for a treat as that's the specialty of the house. My personal favorites are the Wiener Schnitzel and the Sauerbraten. Try the spätzle too ! The steaks are always very good if not huge, and the daily specials (usually five specials or so) keep things interesting. The bread is great, and so are the prices. They are open for lunch on weekdays (other than Monday) and serve lunch sized portions. Call ahead for reservations, it's worth it. Leave your credit cards in your wallet though, Cash is the order of the day here.
