Juniper Inn

Great B&B in a VERY quite area. Rooms are extremely nice and comfortable. Our room had a fire place and whirlpool tub which was worth it. Mark (the inn keeper) is very nice. Made great suggestions of places to visit and eat while in the area. His breakfasts (home made) were very tasty. While the inn is out of the way, the price was reasonable and the area very quite for getting away from the busy life in the Chicago-land area. We went in he off season, but are considering going back in the "on season" to take more in. Clearly one of the best B&Bs in Door County.

They make little cake donuts to order. Choose your icing and your ripping! Such a great concept and its your creation. Ate my donut too fast to snap a photo!
Unique approach to donuts. You choose your glaze and topping. Service was fast and friendly. Seems a happy place. The donuts are very warm when handed to you. They are tiny though - expect about 4 bites a piece. I'll be back, and this time with friends.
This place is tucked away, but worth finding. You can pick the toppings on your donut, anything from bacon to fruitti pebbles. The donuts are still warm and fresh when they hand them to you and on top of that they are delicious! They taste just like the donuts you get from the state fair. I'm glad we didn't get a dozen because I would have eaten all of them.

I'm a huge fan of the bed and breakfast concept, though I've always been a little intimidated by the intimacy of the experience. (There's something to be said for the anonymity of a large hotel, where nobody knows you or cares about your comings and goings.) Do I really want to mingle with strangers over breakfast? Do I really want to make small talk about the lovely Door County weather and the newest shop on Main Street? Do I want to know who's visiting from where and how many times they've come back to the Thorp Inn? Well, now I know the answer is 'yes'. Melanie, the new owner of the Inn, is gracious and considerate. As the only guest (this is an extraordinary rarity here) in the house one night this week, I was treated to her company over breakfast and several chance encounters throughout my three day stay. She made certain I wasn't left alone at mealtime and that I was introduced to the amenities and indulgences available. I'm a vintage-home restoration geek and I was impressed. Everything possible is done up in the appropriate period style. Where modern conveniences are required, every effort has been made to compromise gently. You will NOT be disappointed by the period-style kitchen! I could live in it, if someone would be kind enough to drag a cot in there. The new, expansive porch is a comfy haven, where you will be sheltered from sun or rain, yet able to settle in with cocoa, read a book, or just people-watch on the quiet street one block off Main Street. A huge library is available to guests and the variety of antique and current books is impressive. Lest I forget, the rooms are lovely, lovely, lovely. They range in size from 'compact' (though not at all uncomfortably so), to vast. There are charming cabins on the property, with knotty pine cabinets and enough space to feel comfortable, with well-equipped little kitchens and very generous outdoor decks. I met a family who have stayed in the same cabin every year for 25 years! And the long, brick driveway and impeccably maintained lawn and gardens - just the best! You'll even have a bit of a water view from the second floor rooms. I watched one famous Door County sunset from mine and took a beautiful series of photos of it. Go! You won't be disappointed. And you may meet me over breakfast, because I wouldn't miss the fresh muffins and quiche, or the good conversation!
Stayed in the main house, with breakfast (muffins, fruit, and quiche of the day, fine coffee). Fine old house, well restored, stayed in Maria room, with access to front porch and front library for our evening wine-down, and snacks in the center room cupboard. Small room, Good queen size four poster, Convenient to Fish Creek downtown but far enough from main thoroughfare so as to be quiet, easy walk to Coopers Corner restaurant (well worth a visit).
What a truly lovely bed and breakfast. I would highly recommend this charming inn. My husband and I decided to take a somewhat last minute long weekend trip to Door County for our fifth anniversary. My husband did some research and chose the Thorp House Inn for our stay. I was so glad he did. The house is very beautiful. I loved that its historical touches (like crown molding) were preserved. It was a bit like stepping back in time with the decor (in a good way)! There are multiple rooms downstairs for guests to use, like the living room and the library, as well as a gorgeous front porch. There are complementary coffee, water, tea, and soft drinks available in a common area kitchenette 24 hours a day, which was greatly appreciated. I enjoyed a nightly tea. The breakfast is delicious as well. It's available any time from 8:30-10 in the mornings. There was always an individual fruit plate set out when we walked in. Shortly after we sat down, Melanie, the owner of the inn, would come in and serve us our egg stratas. She changes the type of strata daily (we had french onion, kale, and veggie while we were there), but there is a strata every morning. There was also OJ and muffins to enjoy, and of course, there is an endless flow of coffee. We had the pleasure of speaking with Melanie two of the mornings and she had great suggestions on places to visit during our stay. She even asked if there was anything we needed each morning. It was much appreciated. We stayed in the Eliza room, which was on the first floor of the inn, just through the library. I don't think my husband was aware that we were staying on the first floor when he booked the room, or I think he would have picked a second floor room instead. Don't get me wrong - there was nothing wrong with the room. It was quite charming with time period wallpaper and end tables. However, at street level, I felt uncomfortable with the window shades open at night. I felt like we were in a fishbowl. Plus, when a couple was sitting out on the porch, we could hear everything they were saying, even with the windows closed. Again, the guests were very respectful, and it wasn't late at night, but I wanted to mention it. The bathroom was cute, but the shower was a bit tiny. My husband is quite tall (6'5"), and he told me the shower head was rather low for him, and he had to bend to get completely under the water stream. I had no problems, but I'm pretty short. Finally, the inn is about a block away from the main street in Fish Creek. We enjoyed walking the couple blocks of the downtown area and visiting the local shops. Also, we were able to walk to a small local beach and to Wild Tomato for dinner, which was nice. I would absolutely stay here again in a heartbeat.

Great atmosphere. The best Alaskan batter dipped pollack in door county and that's saying something.
**FRAUD ALERT** 8-23-2015: I reviewed my recent transaction at Bay Side Tavern after my DC trip and the waiter (presumed) added $10 to my transaction in form of a tip. If you read below, you'll note that I did not leave a tip due to his guestimate on what my total was. I will be calling Bay Side Tavern in the morning to issue my grievance and then possibly my credit card company's fraud department. Also, Door County Sheriff's Office will be contacted and given all information on this matter.** The bar/restaurant are about equal in size (big bar). It is a first come, seat yourself environment. Coming with a group (which we did) isn't recommended on a busy Friday night. It took a long time to get a spot but we did and had to really spread out. I ordered a double cheeseburger (pick 2 cheeses) and walleye cheeks. It didn't take too long to get everything. The walleye was really good and the dipping sauce was amazing. The walleye was overcooked and had the consistency of chicken (even looked like it). The burger was very good and quite the redemption from the one I had earlier at Juniper's. Everything was really good. The 2 things that kept this from becoming a 5 star rating was the excessive noise and the waiter splitting the bill in his head (including estimating tax) then saying what it was. It was that which led to no tip because that's not the math we had. I'd like to go back. Also, the tuna steak was really good!
Went here on a Sunday afternoon on our way out of town. Wasn't busy at all and we immediately found a nice table. We were served quickly and got drinks. I ordered a more than decent bloody Mary which I enjoyed thourougly. We ordered our meals, a bacon cheeseburger and fries and my order-gluten free pizza. Food was fantastic. Burger was notably good and gluten free pizza was outstanding. My one quip would be that during our meal, the restaurant got increasingly busy and we saw our waitress less and less. They only had two servers working from what we could see, so getting our check and a to go box took about 20 minutes. Overall, excellent food and good bloody. Would recommend for a quick afternoon bite - but beware if they are busy and understaffed.

Reviews:
This place was recommended as a wine bar stop, but we decided to try dinner. Not a good idea! The place is an eclectic mix of Asian and French. Didn't get it. A bit tricky to find. It's on the second floor above a small market with nothing more than a small sign and the door indicating its location. It's clean and quaint and functional. No frills. Our waiter was attentive and thorough. A bit snarky though when I asked for a wine suggestion to go with our meal. His reply was that "food and wine parings went out in the 80's". Our first course, the recommended, warm banana soup, was terrific. It was the right amount of heat and sweet. A very unique combination that worked well, that I would highly recommend. It went south from there. We had been looking forward to having muscles, and where excited to see them on the menu. Offered in 1/2 or 1lb servings, we thankfully opted for the smaller serving. The muscle were not fresh and tasted too fishy. The red spicy creamy sauce didn't work either. A big disappointment. We had the bang bang chicken entree next. This is the signature item for Helsinki. Thought a sure bet. Not!!. Too spicy and soggy. I like spice. It was more so the soggy wilted texture that turned us off. Mushy and un appealing. The veggies were over cooked and WAY too much peanut sauce. We didn't even finish it. We rate this at 3 stars only because of the banana soup. Otherwise it would get only 2 stars. No interest in going back for a second chance for dinner. Sticking to the wine only.
We LOVE Mr. Helsinki! I was really surprised that there were any bad reviews. We've been going to Fish Creek, Door County for a week every year for the last 10 years and discovered Mr. Helsinki a couple years ago. We usually go around 5:30PM to beat the crowds. We love the atmosphere and the service is wonderful! We usually start with their extensive wine list and have never been disappointed. I ALWAYS get the Bang Bang Chicken and absolutely LOVE it. My only suggestion would be to go heavier on the chicken and lighter on the Boy Choy. If you go to Mr. Helsinkis you absolutely have to get the Bananas Foster- it is unbelievable. We would highly recommend Mr. Helsinkis if you are in Door County. It is our favorite place to eat.
Particularly awful experience. We were basically ignored my the pretentious woman behind the bar, who clearly assumed we'd never had a glass of wine in our lives. She suggested we try a wine "we" might like, because her palette was different - so she said. She should have had a pipette as she literally put 3 drops of a sweet white wine in our glass. We ordered two glasses and were then flat out ignored. We were the only people there, and had to ask for the check three times. I've never felt more uncomfortable in a wine bar. Ever. Awful. One star. Will not be back.

The ribs were mushy. The waitress knew I wasn't happy with the meal, and chose not to do anything about it. The burgers were pretty good.
Came here with huge group and they accommodated our seating perfectly. All of the food ordered was delicious. Lots of options to choose from and had a nice selection of drinks. Would return if back up in DC!
I was a bit hesitant to try Gibralter Grill because the reviews are mixed but I honestly believe this place deserves 5 stars! We had to wait a bit for paito seating but they showed us immediately to the outdoor bar and sent us a text when our table was ready- pretty high tech for Door County! We sat outside despite it being a chilly September night, but they gas lamps and blankets they provided kept us nice and cozy. My friend and I both got burgers, New Glarus beer, and cheese curds- all excellent. We felt right at home and stuck around on the patio for a few more beers after our meal because the atmosphere of Gibraltar Grill was right on.

One of our favorite places to go. The prime rib is the best.. That is what the men usually order. I love the whitefish. It is so tasty. They make their own salad dressing. One of their specials is turkey and it is always good too. The wait staff are a good.
The food was good, if they had what we wanted. We arrived at 730 with a party of 7. It was busy and we waited 45 minutes for a table. That was no problem. We ordered drinks and they were out of Spotted Cow and Ultra, which was surprising and disappointing. When we got to our tables we ordered the fish fry special. They were already out of perch. Ordered walleye with baked potato. The waiter came back to let us know they only had 3 baked potatoes left. A couple of us ordered fries. He then came back to let us know those baked potatoes were spoken for. They offered free desserts and drinks. That was nice except the waiter informed us they were down to 2 desserts. Not 2 choices, but just enough for 2 people. Also we only ordered 3 drinks at the table. Overall the food was good, the waiter tried, but I would likely not go back. The other supper clubs, bars and restaurants choices in Door County are just better.
Classic Wisconsin supper club with awesome food and drinks. I recommend the sirloin and the perch fish fry, very good stuff.

Best cheeseburger I've ever had! Stop here every time we go to Door County, parmesan crusted chicken breast, chili dogs and fries are all wonderful too. Can't wait to go back again this weekend, really missed it over the winter too! Always treated well by the staff as well.
Great grill close to the lake. They've got a range of food from burgers to fish and chips to even tacos. Service was very quick and prices were not bad for the area. Outside eating is great since the weather is so amazing in the summer time.
The appearance of this place is nice, and the food is just mediocre. They do only accept cash, which is fine even though most people prefer to just put things on their card. The ATM at the store was broken, so if you didn't have cash, you were out of luck. The food was fine. You could grab a quick (actually not so quick) burger and fries, but they are nothing special. The guy taking the orders did not seem pleasant and looked like he absolutely hated his job. That did not make the place very inviting. If you want to give this place a try, go right ahead. It's just not the best and not the worst.

Over priced & mediocre. I had the spaghetti & meatballs. The meatballs had no flavor at all! They were tasteless & a bit mushy. I made my husband try it bc I was shocked at how flavorless it was & he agreed. I was also very disappointed in how little sauce there was on the dish. My husband had the fettuccini Alfredo with chicken. It was a very bland sauce & the chicken was bland & seemed to just have been boiled in water. No seasoning or grilling for the chicken. These are two pretty basic Italian dishes that were not done well. The waitress was very friendly. However she failed to keep the drinks flowing. They had a special on wine & we would have had a few glasses each if given the opportunity.
Crazy HIGH prices and horrible food. My mixed seafood (with pasta on side) dish barely had any seafood on it and the linguini beneath it was SWIMMING in water. The cook obviously didn't bother draining the pasta before putting it in big bowl like plate. My friends' chicken parm looked good but was soggy. Our dinner was $70-80 before tip -- crazy high for CRAP. We couldn't wait to get out of there and should've asked for our money back -- horrible experience. We ate EARLY, about 6p on Monday, May 30...the restaurant was NOT busy so plenty of time for them to get it right in kitchen and for wait staff to make things right. New waiter didn't have a clue what to do when we nicely pointed out my horrible seafood mix dinner problems. Italian restaurant, Villagios, near fish creek, door county, wisconsin, STAY AWAY -- unless you have money to burn and want a bland, not much substance food tasting experience
Tiny, but great food and service. The pasta is very good, as I expected, having had many fabulous breakfasts at its sister restaurant, The Village Cafe.

I think this place is ok, American food.
Great place. Service was top notch. My African pork ribs were tender and meaty. Will definitely go back. In fact, before I posted the above, we did go back! The ribs were so good I had them again. Had a different waitress and still great service. This took a long time for me to get this posted. This was in September 2012.
Calamari was really good, the breading tasted amazing. The rolls were great too. Waitress was attentive and I never had an empty water glass. Greek Lemon Chicken was not good. Chicken, angel hair pasta, and green beans were sitting in a soup of olive oil and lemon in a bowl. Pasta was incredibly greasy, beans were not good, and everything was way too lemony and oily. I wouldn't recommend that dish. My boyfriend had the perch fish fry which he enjoyed. Noise level in dining room was pretty loud. Temperature inside was perfect, it was cold outside but I was warm inside in a thin short sleeved sweater.
