If you blink, you might miss this place and all it has to offer. And during "the season" if you are up in Arbor Vitae land, you hafta stop here. The Ice Shanty offers: sandwich and burger meals, great ice cream, and if you want to work a couple calories off you can play a round of miniature golf afterward. They even sell decent quality T shirts. No kidding: the hot dogs come with steamed buns and all the fix-ins', be sure to get their onion rings (they are delicate, sweet, and not greasy). Ice cream options provide wonderful flavors: it is available in regular, frozen yogurt, and fat free/sugar free choices, as well and the prices are fair. They have a nice area to just sit back and look up at the pines and blue sky. So, stop in and get in line; you won't be sorry.
Love this place!! Every year my family and I vacation in Boulder Junction. This has been our "go to" place for ice cream. I'm having trouble remembering the brand they use, Blue Bell or something? I know I can't find it here in Ohio boo hoo. The coconut chip is to die for! Now instead of just getting cones when we pass by, we stop and order our many favorites and they package them up for us to take to go. They put them in extra large soda cups. Perfect for taking back to the cabin and sharing! Will see you this summer Ice Shanty!
Never miss this place during summer. Usually stop for dessert after meal somewhere else. Soft serve terrific. Shakes made to order. Franks and burgers good for sitting outside.

Top notch walleye fish fry, and great beer selection. The karaoke on Saturday nights during the summer is a treat too - this is truly a fun place and always first on my list when I'm up in Vilas County.
Great place we try and go to every year while staying at a friend's in Minocqua. Great ambience, friendly staff, and good food. The walleye fingers are a personal favorite, and their wings aren't bad either.
After a terrible experience next door, we popped in for a cocktail or three... I asked bartender Cody to keep a bag of frozen items as cool as he could. I figured worst he could do is say no. At least they weren't getting hotter in the car before we head back to the cabin. Without hesitation he offered their cooler - despite the snickering of some customers. 13$ for two fingers of Devils Cut, a Kettle and tonic, and a Spotted Cow pint AND keeping our items cool makes me want to come back. Several families were in having burgers and fish. They all seemed happy. Prices are very reasonable, and the service was excellent. Boom. Sit at the bar, perhaps play pool, but bring your own dart tips cause they are running low. Haha.

You can't go wrong eating at Guides Inn when you are anywhere near Boulder Junction. Although they don't take reservations (unless a group of 6 or more) the wait for a table is usually not too bad and you can pass the time away at the bar, chatting with the affable bartender. Best to go hungry because with a relish tray, soup, salad and side included with each meal you will leave as stuffed as their delicious tasty Cranberry Stuffed Walleye, which is my summer favorite. We also recommend the Spinach Salad, Onion Soup and Beef Wellington. My husband had the Jamaican Walleye special and thought it was delicious, with just the right amount of kick. The service is solid and if you are lucky the Chef will come out and say hello!
My family and I dined at the Guides Inn last night and had a very enjoyable meal. We have been coming to the Northwoods of Wisconsin my whole life and I must emphasize that this is a five star place for up here. It does not necessarily compare to a five star establishment in, say Chicago, but for the Northwoods, it's as good as it gets. A big improvement on the traditional supper club fare, even though some of the items are "traditional" supper club favorites. The menu is relatively unchanging from year to year. Steaks, Veal, Fish and Chicken, well prepared, nothing flashy, but generally good and reliable, and everything is freshly prepared. The soups are all homemade and rotate daily, I've yet to have one that wasn't delicious. It's a good value when you consider that your meal comes with a relish tray AND soup AND salad AND Bread and your Entree. Normally these days you see the prices and expect that everything else is extra-- not the case here. My wife has noticed that some of entrees tend to be overly salted, if we have any criticism, this would be it. I've seen several reviews that ask why Chef Jimmy is running around the dining room. Well, for one thing, isn't is refreshing when the person responsible for the food is truly interested in what you think of it? This is one of the charms of this place, and I wouldn't change a thing. We were there on Monday night, it was not busy, and Chef paid us a visit at least 4 times-- in part I think because he was so tickled that my 9 year old was telling him how much he (genuinely) liked the food. I indicated on my review that the place is not good for kids. This is generally true, the pace of service is on par with a European restaurant (not rushed), and most kids will get antsy. However, it's also a credit to the place that even their kids meals are not the lowest common denominator-- they actually make the chicken fingers from scratch. Save room for the homemade gelato (ice cream) and sorbets. Usually several flavors and something unusual. Two of last night's flavors were strawberry rhubarb and root beer. Both very good. A few pieces of advice: The place is not terribly large and the pace of service is leisurely . Reservations are only taken for groups of six or more. They are closed on Sundays, plan accordingly.
Excellent!!!!!! This was definitely the best experience and meal I've had in a very long time. Old fashioned supper club feel all the way, great drinks and staff. The chef came out and welcomed us by taking us through the menu and recommending specific items. I had the shrimp St. James. Wonderful food and experience. I'll definitely be back!!

New favorite restaurant. There are goats and chickens in the back which is where the Outdoorsman restaurant gets their eggs and goat cheese from! I sat on the back porch where you could watch the animals and feel the gentle breeze. The waiter kind of forgot about us since we were out there, but the second time I went they gave us our own thermos of coffee so that was nice. If you do anything get the baguettes with the raspberries, goat cheese, Kaluah candied pecans and lavender honey. SO delicious.
Veggie omlette was stuffed with vege's, outstanding. American fries with onions were fried just right. Depending on your server it was either slow or fast. My server showed up with the food & bill, hence the four stars. Other servers were visible & earning their tips. Really nice north woods atmosphere. We'll be back.
Stopped in for a late lunch on a Sunday afternoon and enjoyed a quiet meal as the restaurant was pretty much empty. We were still promptly served and my wife had a very tasty salad with fresh fruit and my crispy chicken wrap was very fine with fresh lettuce and tomatoes and warm pub chips.

The Granary Restaurant

Reviews:
The Granary is just a decent family place for some simple, tasty food. The dining room is clean, well lit, and spacious, and when weather permits, there is seating in a screened porch as well. The staff are always pleasant and friendly, even when rushed, and treat everyone like an old regular. The food is basic diner faire, cooked consistently well, and with little wait. Breakfast is always on offer, and is perhaps their best, though not to be outdone by the ice cream delights. Overall, a good place for a weekend brunch, or a night you just don't feel like cooking dinner.
Wonderful, Had breakfast Steak and eggs amazing met owner/chef very nice. We're looking forward to revisiting The Granary during our upcoming September Northwoods vacation.
We wee just on a bike ride from crystal lake to Boulder Junction, and stopped here around lunch time. It was pretty much just at the end of the trail, so I would say location is perfect for my party of 5 people. The food was pretty good, nothing special, but very affordable. The atmosphere is great, and they are pretty good with food allergies. Overall it is a very nice place, and I would go there again if I was in the area.

Ultra casual. Order the cod fish fry and German potato salad. Great combo. Service prompt. Sit on the deck if possible, very pleasant.
Ok I know it is the hight of the summer season but give me a break. Some of the worst service ever. We were 2 people at 5pm on a Friday without a reservation but were sat right away but told we were lucky as if we didn't get this table we would be waiting until 9. Good that when it went bad. Husband ordered a ice tea served with out sugar, he went to the bar and the bartender bought him some. I ordered A Seafood combination dinner that came with choice of potatoes and soup or salad. We where told soup was homemade. Soup it is. Husband ordered a fish fry she was about to walk away and I said does he get a side?? Oh yes she said, he order a baked potato. We waited about 20 minutes and she brought our food. I said do I get soup?? Oh did you still want that. Yes. Fish fry was good my husband said yet the coleslaw was a 1 oz solo cup. Really?? My Seafood combination dinner looked good but it had a paper thin slice of lemon served with it. Can I have a little lemon?? She brings my soup. This is the last we see of her at out table. My plate is done and my husband is still finishing his piece of dry rye bread. When a different person comes over and picks up my plate says says you want your bill and throws it on the table. I said do you have dessert?? Oh yes she say's one of the wait staff makes it homemade. What kind is it?? I will have to find out. She comes back tells up the deserts and then says but on Friday we don't let people it at the table and eat dessert only to go. So to sum up, No soup, No sugar served with ice tea or refill. No one to ask how did you enjoying your meal? Just give me your f***** money and get the h*** out of hear.
Ok here it is quite frankly, Outstanding ! Wed night 2 for one specials. Great food great service . Friendly, accomadating outstanding place for dinner with fair prices and terrific food.
