What could you possibly want that you couldn't find here! This is THE most amazing restaurant experience we've had in forever! From the amazing staff to the atmosphere & finishing up with an outstanding meal. I so glad We could write this review which means we had an excellent experience!

We had an 8 pm reservation at Wild Rice on Thursday, August 27. This is a review to comment on service (and attitude) and not on the food which was very good and also - for a fine-dining establishment - very generous. Good Wisconsin portions! However, here's the beef... One, the wine stewart came to our table and asked my boyfriend if he wanted help with the wine list. My boyfriend said that he was having a beer first, but then would switch to wine. The wine steward or sommelier said he would come back. We never saw him again. We asked our server about splitting the soup on the first course and the entree as we like to taste everything but really love it when the restaurant will split things. No, there is a $6 charge for splitting. Why? The restaurant was nearly empty at the beginning of our meal - how could that have been a burden for the kitchen? Personally, I find that offensive and realize that there are restaurants in LA and NY who are doing this but, when we encounter this, we rarely return to one of these establishments. Two, the server, while quite nice, admitted she knew nothing about wine - but nor did she volunteer to bring anyone over. Finally, we ASKED HER to bring the wine steward, who was not the original guy, but someone who we could see chatting in the kitchen (open kitchen). My boyfriend ordered the Bison steak (very delicious) but he asked the server if he could have some mustard with it and we were told that they don't serve anything additional to the way the dishes come out. Really, customer service... Lastly, they served the cheese plate, which was very nice with some very mushy, sweet, wild rice bread. We asked if we could get some of the delicious, crusty bread that had been served to us throughout the meal. Again, no. They had put away the bread (and/or) it was all thrown away! We came away with a very bad taste in our mouth about Wild Rice!

Visited Wild Rice on July 3rd. Perfect date night. Staff was great and helpful. Setting is unmatched in northern Wisconsin. Not a place for young children, enjoy an adults only fine dinning meal. Order the whitefish and trout, buffalo tenderloin with cheese cake and crime brûlée for dessert. You will not be disappointed. Ps.... You need to visit both the men and ladies bathrooms, they are total opposites design wise. Love the attention to detail.

Fresh, creative dining in Bayfield. What a surprise! The amuse (potato salad with beet and dill) was a good way to start the evening. The creamy wild rice soup was not too heavy and the finely chopped apples (and bacon) made the dish "pop." The strip steak was cooked to perfection (a little too big though) and the halibut was served with al dente veggies. I didn't love the tomato miso drizzled on the fish (bc I never enjoyed warm tomatoes with fish) but it wasn't offensive. The panna cotta was nicely complimented with fresh blueberry compote. My only complaint would be the level of service....it needs to be a little more refined. I am not asking for complete snobbery, but the wait staff was a little young and experienced. However, the management appeared to have a lot of experience in the business.

Fantastic dinner! My wife and I dined at Wild Rice for our first anniversary. The service, food, wine, architecture, everything was perfect. The wind steward was very helpful and was not pushy. The service was 5-star. We both had the New York Strip, it was one of the best I've had. Prices are a bit on the high end, but I think warranted for the overall experience. Its a bit hard to find (google maps took us down a few dead end roads) but its worth the drive when you are in the area.

What a lovely setting and building. Nice bar area and very attentive bartender. If you make a reservation for a window table make sure you specify lake view or kitchen view, there is a big difference. Ordered salads, starter, and entrees, I was hoping for a special of some sort, the menu didn't thrill me much. Food was Ok but could be better for this caliber of restaurant. Bread had been cut earlier and was dried out. Ordered a bottle of wine and no one ever offered to refill our glasses. The one thing that just threw me off were the three life size stuffed creepy women mannequins in the ladies restroom. In such a beautiful restaurant with imported glass there is them. Who would think they are a good idea.

So unexpected to find a restaurant of this caliber here in Northern Wisconsin. If it weren't for the climate, one could easily imagine you are in the heart of Napa Valley given their fresh, local produce and 300+ wine list. Excellent attentive service (I don't think our water glasses were ever empty) but not stuffy. One of the best meals we've had in a long while. Definitely on par with fine restaurants in Minneapolis or Chicago.

Great place to meet for drinks! The bar area is beautiful and they have comfortable seating to relax with friends.

What a wonderful dinner!! I wish that I could find lodging in Bayfield that lived up to this high standard. The evening was delightful, with fantastic food, ambiance, service and company. I was not expecting this in Bayfield, it was a complete surprise. I will recommend this to everyone that I know and will definitely be back in the future. I still can't get that fabulous wild rice soup out of my head, it't the kind of dish that you have dreams about. The view is also spectacular, I wish we had been there a little bit earlier to get a seat by the window but the view of the kitchen is also unique. It looks like there is nice bar tucked away in the back, I will have to come early for a drink next time.

I had high expectations when visiting Wild Rice and they were definitely met. Great bar, great Prix Fixe menu in June ($40 for 3 courses that were not tiny like other fine dining restaurants), casual atmosphere and a very attentive wait staff. Both the food and the building (compound?) are a work of art. I am not going to say much more because you just need to go there to experience it. Every time I go to Bayfield from now on I will visit this restaurant. I might even go out of my way to pay a visit if traveling nearby.

This place is great (especially for Northern Wisconsin). They offer a seasonally inspired menu, and a great selection of wine, beer, and spirits. If you are looking for an upscale dining experience with a beautiful view of Lake Superior, Wild Rice Restaurant would be a good choice, perhaps the only choice for hundreds of miles.

I have wanted to come to this restaurant for several years after reading glowing reviews in Gourmet ( I did say several years) as well as Bon Appetit magazines. Made an 8:00 pm reservation for a Tuesday seeing as that is when I would be in town and that is when they could seat my husband and I. We arrived about 7:15 and informed maitre d to please come get us in bar as we would like a drink or 2 before reservation. Aside from us arriving at bar, table of 4 in corner as well as another couple seated behind us with window seating and another couple at bar. Sat there a FULL 10 minutes before bartender finally acknowledged us after several loud but subtle suggestions on my part. We did eventually have 2 cocktails each before dinner, but the bartender was certainly not the most engaging. We had an 8:00 reservation. We believe 2 other tables randomly came in and were seated before us with a "Hope you like the lakeside view" comments. Went to ask about our table and was informed that they had come to get us and sorry about the mix up. We wound up with a table we were quite happy with overlooking the whole entire open kitchen. The food was absolutely PHENOMINAL!!! Really wanted to share an appetizer or salad, but seeing as I had perused the menu so many times before coming there and we had had a late brunch, we told the waitress we would be having entrees and saving room for dessert. At that point , an hour and 10 minutes BEFORE the fact, she could have mentioned desserts are custom made and take 20+ minutes to prepare. We were served an amuse bouche about 15 minutes after ordering which was delicious and then the empty spoon sat in front of us for 10 minutes to be followed by a wonderful slice of bread that had had the delectable butter beckoning to us from the moment we sat down. Mmmmmm, the bre.... here's our entree's. the food was out of this world good!!! But wait, we are not even half way through our meal and 3 people ( 1 I soon figured out to be the owner) start walking and looking at paintings on the wall. The woman with the cane is explaining the concept of each and every painting they look at and of course the final one is directly at our table. Stop waving your cane and enunciating the importance of an egg yolk and how you came upon the concept for this particular painting! Kind of wrecked the few remaining bites of what would have been a truly remarkable meal. Please package the rest, we would like to go outside for an after dinner cigarette and can we see a dessert menu. No problem. Smoke, finally get a dessert menu 10 minutes after we come back. After 10 additional minutes, go the restroom and have husband please tell server I would like wild rice cake. That's when we find out it is additional 20+ minutes. Service positions REALLY NEED to be better trained here. Kitchen staff is phenominal. Actually ran into 4 other diners later in the evening who had a completely different server with similar complaints. While we were getting ready to leave a group of 6 well dressed college kids came in around 45 minutes before close and the server said they could not help them. Guessing drinks alone would have been about $100 in addition to food mimnimum$200 more. IMPROVE your service!

Drove to Bayfield for a weekend away only to discover Wild Rice is closed for the season. I was disappointed as the website has no mention of this and the telephone has no voicemail. Bummer.

This restaurant just outside of Bayfield is well worth the short drive. I would describe the menu as seasonal American with a french twist. My wife and I have been there twice, once in 2004 and once in 2008, and the service and atmosphere were good on both occasions. The decore is Danish Modern and the layout is very interesting with the kitchen separated from the dining room by a small bridge. My only complaint is that the dining room can get quite loud if it is crowded.

This place was wonderful! Compared to the other restaurants in town, this is more like something you would find in a big city (with prices to match) but with a certain small town charm. We found the food to be delicious but it's worth going just to see the decor there. The only negative I had was that all the dishes had a lot going on...almost too many flavors.

Every time we try another "great restaurant" in Northern Wisconsin it's always the same... not. Finally Wild Rice has broken the spell. It's truly a special and unique dining destination. The architecture+decor wowed us right off the bat. Then we loved our cocktails. They also have a wonderful wine list. Our starters were delish, After 2 of them we went on to split the the prix fixe. Every bite was savored and I had to stop myself from licking the plate. Even the blood orange liqueur was over-the-top. Another stand-out is the service. It was perfect not just because our server was courteous, attentive and well versed with the menu, it also felt casual and comfortable. I can't wait to return and do it all again.

Let's start off with this is one of the most beautiful locations for a restaurant. Great views of Lake Superior and the grounds are amazing. The bartender here was very good as we were waiting for our table. Friendly and helped find something we liked. Now to the food. The fresh tuna was pretty amazing for an appetizer. However, the meal was lacking. I ordered a Bison ribeye- medium. the waiter came back and told me the chef doesn't recommend it being cooked that much. I told him the chefs at Heartland in St. Paul were able to do it that way but that I would be fine with medium rare as the chef recommended. I then was served a toasted bison ribeye that was well done. I didn't complain because at $160 for two people I shouldn't have to complain. Fun to go once but I won't go back.

Shocking for the Northwood's to put it lightly. I was only there for appetizers and drinks, but it has a very modern Swedish design and excellent service. It reminded me of IKEA, but much better quality of course...in every aspect

This is one of the most beautiful restaurants I've ever been in. Just driving in, you know it's going to be something very special. Very open, lots of glass lets you observe the kitchen and a secluded large party across the bar as you go over the inside bridge on the way to the bathroom, and considering how many trips I take, I could have joined them. We got the 3 course deal for $49. Includes soup or salad, entree, and dessert. Basil and I got the same thing, figured the wild rice soup must be good. It's not a conventional creamy one, dark in color, rich in flavor, doesn't warrant an extra $3 charge for getting it, though. Only one entree is offered, a steak. Sliced, tender in a jus. Didn't bother to catch what kind. Desserts, I had a feeling they'd be weird. The closest to normal was a bread pudding made with strawberry bread. Kind of molded, not like any I've seen before, very moist and really good flavor. You get your moneys worth in bread, someone actually walks around all night like the old cigarette girls. As nice as Wisconsinites are, the wait staff have a very stiff, aloof approach, seems to be done deliberately. They remind me of the Robert Palmer girls from his ADDICTED TO LOVE video. The experience reminds me of being a judge on TOP CHEF, oversized white bowls, even an amuse bouche. I'd eat here weekly if I could. When visiting set aside a night for this, and always make reservations well in advance, if possible.

The only, true fine dining experience in Northern Wisconsin! Food was excellent, seared tuna was the best I've ever had. Very modern, which is very odd for the area - loved it. Make sure you get the wild rice cake dessert - amazing!

Absolutely top notch food and service. Everything was excellent. We come once each year, during our annual trip to Bayfield. Very unusual and interesting building too. We are usually here during June or September when there's a three-course for $35 and half price wine special. That's an excellent value and plenty of food. We've also ordered off the menu as well. It is expensive, but worth a splurge once a year!

We come every year...one of the highlights of our annual visit with friends. Never had even a mediocre meal here. Amuse bouche was delicious....smoked fish on cucumber. Nick, sommelier, recommended a great pottery bottle Chardonnay and delicious Shiraz. Hubby had the foie gras appetizer....amazing composition of flavor. Two of us had the greens salad, simple and delicious. I had the trout & whitefish entree, perfectly cooked, hot and moist. Hubby was tentative about ordering lamb, but was pleased to find it did NOT have that funky lamb flavor. Two shared the cheese plate for dessert (as always), and pronounced the cheddar the best, goat cheese their least favorite. Food, service, pace....all are consistently excellent.

Beautiful building and grounds, delicious cocktails, attentive service, and incredible food! Our group stopped for dinner and drinks before a show at Big Top. Randy, the restaurant manager, accommodated us early. We would have loved to try a tasting menu because of the incredible selection of food available. Unfortunately they don't offer this option. My group ended up sharing several options and had nothing negative to report. We will definitely return!

I was so excited to come here and they did not disappoint. The service was unbelievable. The waiter (also a local yoga instructor) was hysterical and made the evening more fun. The strip stake was perfect. I had amazing halibut, but the prizes go to the fois gras and wild rice cake. Wonderful wine choices.
