I've been here a couple of times, and have come out every time hating this place. Because of the few Indian options around this area, I end up here. But after our buffet today, we've made up our mind to never come back. The food is average to bad mostly. What really piques me is that they use tofu instead of paneer most of the times. First time I saw this, I thought that they may have run out of paneer, and are using it as some emergency measure. But having seen it a couple of times, I am convinced that they are using it as a cheaper option. It spoils most of the dishes involving paneer. The naan bread is either too rubbery or too fried up during the buffett. Also the gratuity is automatically added to the bill for ala carte dining, which they don't even tell you. I'd definitely not recommend this place. It's no surprise that I see very few indians here.

I ate here with my boyfriend and the family when we were in town. The owners are so incredibly friendly. The food was ok, it was what I expected for Wisconsin. Rather than eat family style everyone ordered their own entree, but I choose to split the baigan bharta and chicken tikka masala with my boyfriend. These were both pretty delicious but compared to other Indian places I've eaten at they weren't as flavorful as I had hoped.

I went here just about every week in high school. During college I went here every week when I was in town. Now I go here as often as humanly possible when I make it back to Appleton. Tasty and reasonable buffet, great dinners (get the thali dinner for sure, because the soup is delicious), and very friendly owners. Plus they've updated the decor some since my high school days, which makes it a pretty nice looking place. Yummm.

Friendly owner. The buffet is a great deal and a great way to try different food. You get very full very fast. This is usually my breakfast, lunch and dinner. When I eat here, the food really stays with me all day. I'll have a piece of fruit later on at night and I'm satisfied for the day. So even though with the cost of the buffet, a mango lasi, and tip I spend around $16 considering that it's pretty much my food for the entire day, it's highly economical. I only have 2 small plates of food, and a small dish of desert. The desert balls in the syrup are wonderful! I can never remember the name of them. Great friendly people too!

Absolutely love Sai Ram. Been there for lunch buffet- it's great! Been there for dinner- fantastic! Take-out last night... not so hot. Portions seemed smaller, but maybe they've scaled back on their portions in general. Overall, the food was amazing as usual.

This was my first experience with Indian Cuisine & it was fantastic. Shavi helped us to pick out foods that were great - the wine selection went well with our meal. Definately going to go back again soon!

This was my first time visiting Sai Ram Restaurant, and it came highly recommended by various friends of mine. They had mentioned that Sai Ram had a great lunch buffet, and that was the main reason for my visit for lunch. They have recently remodeled, and they have also revamped the menu, which means no more Lunch Buffet. They now offer a lunch menu, where you pick 2 entrees including either soup or salad. I chose salad, my friend chose the soup which was a very tasty lentil. My salad consisted of a very very small hand full of a Spring Green mix, no lettuce of any kind, and a side of ranch dressing! I regretted not having the soup! I would not call the greens I had, a salad. For my 2 entrees I had Palak Paneer, a spinach dish with a nice kick to it. My second entree was Tandoori Chicken. I received 3 chicken drumstick with a reddish color to them, kind of dry and flavor less. The Palak Paneer I would definitely order again. For beverage I had a Mango Lassi. Very good. All in all a little disappointed. Will I go back? Probably. By the way, my friend who was with me, mentioned that the Onion Nan that we ordered a la carte, was not was it used to be

I have had Indian cuisine in many cities and this place rates right at the top of the list. Very good flavors and well executed dishes. I go regularly. My only caveat is that it can take a while to get the food out, so don't plan for a quick meal...

Really good food, as spicy as you like. Great flavors, moderate prices, but not too $ at all. Definitely worth a stop. Get the chicken chilli. Best part is you have never heard of most anything on the menu, so its all new, when you find something you like (and you will) its way more invigorating then a good burger would be.

An old friend informed me just today that my all-time favorite restaurant, Sai Ram, is closing its doors forever. I cannot convey enough my disappointment and disbelief. I teared up, I won't lie, cos I always dreamed about going back 'someday'. However, Appleton WI is a long way from WLA & The SE - and I could never get the time. I've eaten at fine Indian restaurants in many of my travels & multiple moves and I would always lament, "This is good, but it's NO Sai Ram!". I wish you all the best in your future endeavors, and I hope you know that in all the years away that I have never seen Sai Ram's equal. Now, it will fade into the ether of the crypto-cuisine of my memory, never again to be replicated - i.e. my dearly departed grandmother's chicken spaghetti (soo delicious) and items like Taco Bell's Veggie Fajita Wraps (Remember those 1997? Of course not, that's why they were discontinued). Had I known sooner, my best friend and I would've booked a flight for our last pilgrimage to Appleton, WI and I would have happily ordered 50 parcels of your out-of-this world Makhani sauce just to ship back with me (and dined like a madwoman whilst there). Incidentally, I now have no reason to ever return to my former home base. I hope you get a chance to read this. Many memories were made on endlessly dark, cold, wintry nights snuggled up to your fantastic dishes, kind smiles and cozy atmosphere. I remember when you were hosting a private party for the late, great maestro, Ravi Shankar when he was in town to perform ('03?). My ex and I tried to nonchalantly wait and schmooze with you and other invited guests so we could stay for the party, but you two were on to us! Foiled again! I beseech thee to eventually release a book of recipes [Chapter One: Makhani Sauce], I will pay for 10 copies! Seriously, I will. I have turmeric. Garam masala and fenugreek leaves, I know how to use them! What to say? How can I say goodbye? So long and thanks for all the 'shrimp'! Truly, I will never forget your family and Sai Ram, Namaste.

We had the delicious Chicken Tikka Masala which was perfectly prepared. The garlic naan bread was very good. Atmosphere very nice, better than we imagined before stopping by. A nice touch is the Monday half price bottle of wine. We recommend highly and would definitely return when back in this area. Jim & Phillips Ormond Beach, FL

One of the things I really miss having moved to Fond du Lac, from Chicago is fact that I can't get Indian food at a moment's notice Luckily Appleton-and Sai Ram-is only 45 minutes away. I love walking into the place. The wonderful aromas of all those spices just blow you away, and the decor is nice with dim but warm lighting and just enough accents to give the place some visual appeal without being overly busy. I really love the food here. It is well seasoned with a good mix of dishes that are hot and those that are not (although in our most recent visit it seems they have upped the heat level in all their dishes-not sure if it is a new direction or a new cook-but I don't mind the heat anyway). It may not be the most authentic Indian food I've ever eaten, but it is tasty, and when the craving hits me this place definitely hits the mark. I do miss their lunch buffet and their old style of service in which your recieved an entire dinner with a few sides like dal. It seems like they are trying too hard to push Western style service and trying to make it too upscale, but those are modest gripes. I have always found their servers to be very friendly and helpful, explaining in detail when me, my wife or my daughter had any questions about the food. That said, there are definitely stronger servers and weaker servers at this place although I have never had a server that did so poorly as to be a problem. Overall, this is not the best Indian dining experience I've ever had, but the food is solid, the service is good, boarding on great, and as an added bonus, my, somewhat picky, 8 year old daughter really likes it, which means its that much easier for me to head up there when the craving for Indian food hits.

So disappointed I found out about this place a week before they closed their doors! I was able to get a few meals in in the meantime. Their fish masala was amazing! The curry with lamb was also! I hope they decide to reopen if they can find consistent staffing.

  • Jen L.

The service was great! Very professional. Our waiter was so helpful, explaining about the dishes. I tried the chicken masala, tandoori chicken, and the nan. Everything was soooo good, especially the nan! Only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 was because it took a while for the food to come out even though it wasn't that busy. But other than that it was great!

  • Mitch K.

Amazing food! The menu explains all the options if you're not familiar with Indian cuisine. Wait staff was attentive and offered advice and explanations. You are given a choice of mild, medium or hot so it can satisfy everyone's tastes.

  • A B.

My husband and I ate here for the first time. We started with the mixed vegetable pakora which was very good but fried, so probably wouldn't order this again. I had the Tandoori Chicken which was flavorful and moist with really sweet delicious sauce. I liked my husbands even better, the chicken tikka masala which was amazing. We also had the garlic nan bread and don't forget the mango juice! The service was amazing! We will be back very soon!

Wonderful food! My son and I love coming here! The food is flavorful and fresh every time we go. The staff is always friendly and remember us - one of the waiters even brought out a free dessert for my son since we were there celebrating his birthday. There are cheaper Indian restaurants in the area, but none can match the quality and atmosphere.

Ive always seen it around but was never really in the mood for Indian food until recently when my brother and sister-in-law said that this place is delicious. Decided to try it out today and the food just blew me away!! Service is beyond my expectation; they came around often to refill drinks and the food was extremely fresh. You can tell they put a lot of love in the way they made the chicken so tender. I would definitely recommend this place for Indian food and I would definitely come back to try the other dishes. Thank you for treating me and my family so well!!

First time here tonight. Excellent service, friendly.staff. I had the channa masala, and my boyfriend had the chicken masala. I loved that their was a brown rice option. We started out with the sambar soup which had a nice kick to it, and very satisfying on this cold winter evening.

Sai ram is our go to place for lunch at work now. The staff is courteous and the food is excellent. I appreciate that they ask for the level of heat and it that's what you get no more no less. The selection of entrees is robust. Definitely a favorite.

The food was amazing. The prices were very competitive and the lighting was great. My date and I were very happy and plan on coming back again.

My husband and I came here for the first time on Friday night, and we were very impressed. The younger guy at the counter was very pleasant, seated us right away and was very helpful with wine pairings for what I wanted, which was the chicken biryani. It took awhile for everything to arrive, but it must've been because there were a lot of to-go orders. The onion pakora and garlic naan were amazing, and so was the entrees. Perfect amount of heat, and a good portion for the price. Wasn't too crazy about the mango ice cream. Next time we will definitely be back!

Yes! I travel for work and when in the middle of Wisconsin food choices are thin; if you want something other than American. I found Sai Ram on my gps and headed straight for the strip mall where it is located. I was so pleased with the atmosphere and food that I was giddy, yes I said giddy. I ordered my usual dish, it's the litmus test for all Indian restaurants, and it was spot on. The servings were plentiful and the flavor was excellent. I would recommend this to other travelers and locals. Sorry you had a bad experience Ashley, next time my treat.

  • Eric S.

Excellent place. We went at around 4:00pm on a Tuesday & it was quiet. But the service was excellent. We had the vegetarian masala, Tandoori chicken, and the garlic Nan and it was enough for 3 of us. Granted none of us are big eaters but we were very satisfied with the portions. In my opinion, many restaurants now a days serve portions too large. I'm more interested in quality than quantity. We would definitely go back.

Even if you've never had Indian this is a must. The koorma has always been a winner and get yourself some naan. Try the soup too if you have the room.

  • Pam K.

My 10 year old son and I both love Sai Ram and go here often, either dining in or take out. The staff is all so very friendly and even remembers you when you come in. They're all very helpful in helping you decide which items in the menu you may enjoy. Chicago, Madison, Brookfield, Green Bay - all have good Indian restaurants, this is the best I've been to so far!

  • Karin A.

We recently moved to the Fox Cities area, and are so glad to have a go-to place for Indian food! The dal makhani, chicken tikka masala and naan are our usual, and they always come out hot, delicious and with the right amount of spice. Service is cordial and helpful too; Drake has often been our waiter and he's great! Would certainly recommend.

    (5)
  • Chelsa L.

The food tastes good, but the portion size is very small for the price. I was disappointed that they charge for more sauce. The service was pretty slow compared to my last visit. Overall, I'm glad to see Appleton has an Indian restaurant, but for what I can get in Milwaukee, it doesn't compare.

My girlfriend and I went here to celebrate our 2-year anniversary and always wanted to try Sai Ram. We had heard great things from many people and both love spicy food. Right when we got there, we were seated by a very nice young lady who was extremely helpful letting us know any discounts or specials. We looked over the menus, and the menus had just enough options (not overwhelming like some menus at other restaurants). Our waiter was extremely pleasant and helpful, great customer service. My girlfriend ordered moscato and I ordered a Maharajah beer, both really good. We ordered the garlic nan which was AMAZING with the sauces the provided. We liked it so much we ordered another serving during our dinner. We also ordered the jalapeno pakoras which were like a jalapeno mini-corn dog with an Indian twist. Very good. My girlfriend ordered the chicken curry for her main dish. She said she loved it. I tried a bite, and if you like curry you'll like the dish. Came in perfect portion-size too. I ordered the chicken tikka masala. That was addicting. The best part of the whole experience. I ate the whole thing fairly quickly. Delicious. Will definitely go back for just that if necessary. For those that didn't like this place, I have no idea why. That's okay, more for me to chow on.

  • Holly V.

The tikki masala and the butter chicken are sooooo good. Oh, and don't forget the naan bread. Note: make sure you bring cash to pay, as they will give you a discount.

Ate dinner at Sai Ram, a place I crave sometimes! The Nan is so flavorful, even the plain tastes great! I always get extra tamarind chutney to dip nan bread and chewy pankoras into! There are dishes at this Indian restaurant that are NOT super spicy, so don't be scared! I get the navaratan koorma -mixed vegetables including cauliflower, broccoli, potatoes and others with chunks of mild cheese in a sweet creamy sauce that starts with coconut milk. There are so many different spices in the air and in the food - it is always an experience to go there. My 10 year old got moist, beautifully grilled tandoori chicken and she liked it so much, she is already eating her leftovers and we just got home. My only complaint with Sai Ram EVER is that the service is slow -they are not a quick turn place by any means. But it is well worth the wait in my opinion!

First time here and it was excellent! Our waiter Drake was super friendly and helpful. We will definitely be back. Best Indian restaurant in the Fox Valley.

Just ate here for the first time and I can say I will be coming back. I had the tikka Marsala and my wife had the chicken curry, both were very good. The garlic naan is awesome as well. The interior is kinda dark and it seems like they are trying to be a high end restaurant but you can only be so fancy in a strip mall. The waiter was cool, don't get thrown off when they are on an iPod or iPad when ordering as that's the way they place the order. Overall I say it's a good place and we will be back.

Amazing! I've even been to India and this reminded me of the experience. The Paneer Palak, biryani and the Aloo Mutter were exceptional. Must try.

Was in the mood for Indian food the day after a lackluster Thanksgiving. A family member suggested this place, they said they had never eaten here, but that they heard it was great. They heard right! Nestled in what looks like a mini strip mall design, one could be easily deceived thinking this is just a run of the mill Indian joint. Don't make that mistake. This place is clean and decorated well inside, and the atmosphere is inviting and upscale without being overly fancy or exclusive. The staff is not only friendly but helpful and informed when it comes to their meals. The Chicken Tikka Masala is rich and bold, the meat wasn't dried out yeti cock like some places have tried to pass off. They gravy was flavorful and spiced to the correct flavor and heat. I ordered mine spicy, which is what I always do to get a base reading, if you like your food with a kick, it's great. I like mine with a lot of kick, and next time I know I can order extra spicy. I will eat here again, and I suggest that anyone who wants a good meal do the same.

After going here many times for years I have decided it's the second best Indian restaurant in appleton. The flavor and atmosphere is nice. But the portions for the price is ridiculous. You get way less chicken, and half the amount for much more than you pay at India Darbar. Forget take out, they barely give u enough rice. They seem to be trying to be fancy by jacking their prices up but they don't have the flavor to make it worth it.

Thought I would never like Indian food. Until now. I drool just thinking about Sai Ram. There food has SO many different flavors that you can't get enough. Its food crack. The decor is nice and relaxing. Our service is always "Meh" but the food makes up for it.

  • Moonie K.

Went in for lunch, and was very pleased! The lunch special is very well-priced, and you're fed a very generous portion, that's very skillfully done - probably the best chicken curry I've had outside of Asia! Service is very friendly and attentive, seating is comfortable, and once again, the price is very reasonable for what you're getting (a very delicious meal!) Definitely look forward to visiting again sometime!

My family loves this place. The food is so delicious and the staff is very nice. Always welcoming. Their family spice is truly a gem. Their serving sizes are appropriate. I've recommended this place to others and I'd go back.

Absolutely my favorite restaurant in WI right now. Great food, great selection for vegans and vegetarians. We've eaten here three times in the last month and never had a bad experience. Best Indian food I think I've ever had, the nan is great, good atmosphere, love it. If you haven't been here, you have to check it out. We're working our way through the vegan selection, many choices to be had. Highly recommended!

Food and the restaurant ambiance was good. Ordered briyani and chicken curry - tasted really good. When I checked in through Yelp, I saw $10 off $20 coupon which I tried to use. Although a very valid coupon, they took just $10 off my bill and not $20 off. So I have to wait and ask them again (waste of 15 minute more). But they did go ahead take $20 off of my bill. So be careful when you apply a Yelp coupon or any other coupon.

As per our server, Kim's, request here is my review: My husband and I went for only our 2nd time on Friday. Our first experience was amazing, everything was explained to us, the waiter was beyond friendly. I wish I remembered his name so I could give him a positive shout out. Our 2nd time was NOT pleasant. We were seated right away. Within a few minutes our server, Kim, came by to give us our water and take our order. We ordered an appetizer and our entrees at the same time. It took over 30 minutes for our appetizer to arrive. Not once did Kim come back with an update or to fill our glasses. A few other servers filled us up but not her. As we sat waiting we saw the other employees going to their tables many times to check on their customers. Our appetizer was good but too spicy even after I double checked the spicy level with Kim. She assured me it was very mild. Our entrees came about 5 minutes after our appetizer. I ordered the same thing as I did the first visit, small size Navartan Koorma (forgive my spelling on that one). Again I stressed that I wanted a mild version. Again, it was incredibly spicy and I only managed a few bites. My husband's was beyond spicy as well but he ordered it that way. So no bad points there. We then waited for our bill and it was wrong. When I pointed out that I ordered the small size Kim said "well, i gave you the large". There was no I'm sorry, let me take care of that for you or anything. No customer service whatsoever. This girl should probably consider a new job where people skills aren't involved. So I was stuck paying an extra $5 for a meal I didn't order or eat. Not a huge deal really but I was not happy with how it was handled. And then I still had to tip the girl for poor service. Sigh. The following morning both my husband's and my hands were so swollen we couldn't close our fists. The only thing we had was Sai Ram. Too much msg or salt or something. It wasn't good. We will not be returning.

This is a bad restaurant. I went for dinner and food prices were very high and also food quality was not authentic and good. And she charged me extra 20% on top of what I owe to her according to menu prices. Wen I asked her why you are charging extra, she said, " this is the gratuity". I paid it but that was my first and last time on this restaurant. TOTAL RIPOFF.....

Who would have thought a strip mall Indian restaurant would be good? Not me. The food was delicious and the service was friendly and quick. I highly recommend the chicken makhani and a side of garlic naan.

  • Mark P.

Great atmosphere, but awful food! I personally love all Indian food, from southern to Punjabi. I could not tell what the cuisine was suppose to be, the food was that awful! The pakora appetizers were not cooked in center, so they were raw doughy tubes. And the main courses have no flavor, which is strange for an Indian cuisine. If you like Indian food, DON'T eat here! I will say the service was good, but too bad they don't have the food to match .

Went to Sai Ram for the first time for lunch. I was eating later in the lunch hour, but the place was still steady. I ordered a "lunch combonation" for lack of a better term which include a choice of two smaller size entrees, a side of rice and bowl of soup. The soup was served first. I was blown away. I have a new all time favorite soup. The soup was called a Sambar lentil soup. I don't know if this is a regular soup or if it is part of a cycle, but it was incredible. Very nice chunks of vegetables in a tamarind broth that has a wonderful spicy finish. I tried to save half of the soup for when my entrees arrived (with accompanying nan), but could not hold myself back. I ended up ordering an extra bowl of soup along with my lunch. For my entrees, I went with the chicken makhani and tandoori chicken. The tandoori chicken is what you would expect; two large marinated chicken wings with a few vegetables. Standard fare for tandoori. The chicken makhani was a different story though. I was blown away at the flavors of this dish. It has very complex tastes and textures. So now, to go along with my new favorite soup, I think I have a new favorite chicken dish. Finally, the nan was just slightly charred and cooked perfectly. As far as other measurables, the atmosphere was fine. They had a dark wood bar, and not a lot of natural light so it made the whole restaurant seem dark. Not a knock by any means. It appeared like they had a large, separated area in the back, perhaps for large groups. Service was superb, and the waiter gave me tips for eating the soup and the chicken dishes similar to how they eat them in Southern India. They do serve a selection of Indian beers that I will be sure to try next time because several of them sounded interesting. They also serve other domestic and import bottled beer. Overall, I will definitely be going back to Sai Ram, and this time bringing a larger group. My mouth is already watering thinking about the next bowl of Sambar soup.

I'm not familiar enough with Indian food to know if they deserve 5 stars or not, but it was certainly the best Indian food I've had in a long time. The vegetable samosas were fried just right, and the lamb curry was outstanding. I would recommend this to anyone who wants good indian food in the Fox Valley.

Solid Indian food, nicely spiced and reasonably priced. 15.95 for complete dinner including meat dish, vegetable, soup, rice, dal, naan bread and mango ice cream. Worth a visit if you are passing through Appleton or Oshkosh.

COMFORT FOOD AND ALWAYS GREAT FOR TAKE OUT. I came here scared out of my mind because I didn't know a thing about Indian food and hadn't a clue if I would like it or what to order. Still, I was determined to try this place because the buzz is it is the best Indian food in Appleton and I wanted to know what that was! The wife of the owner or the owner, came over so I asked for her help. She said to order the shrimp Masala. If this is indian food, then I have been missing out on some of the most amazing flavors up to this point! Shrimp malsala from Sai Ram has been my comfort food now for 4 years. I crave it, sometimes will order 2 for take out so I can have it for a few days straight! Also, they have a lunch buffet where you can try more choices and figure out the rest of the menu without the commitment. I am sticking with the masala, which you can also get in chicken if you are not doing shellfish. Trust me on this one, it is a must try.

Delicious food, warm friendly atmosphere (I don't know why the "Noise Level" is rated as Very Loud...while it's true you can hear chopping and such coming from the kitchen, that's part of the atmosphere. To me Very Loud means music or TVs blaring.) We drive down from Green Bay once a month for the lunch buffet. Unfortunately, we just learned they have discontinued the buffet as of October 3, 2011. However, I just looked at the menu online and it looks like they are offering combination meals.

  • Matt B.

The buffet was good but the lady cashier was rude. She did not see the cash tip left on the table and ran outside when we were getting in our car to tell me I did not write a tip on the receipt and I must tip. I told her to go check the table. Unreal! I haven't been back since.

I was looking for good Indian food in northeast Wisconsin, and I found it. Service was a little slow and the masala that I recommended to my friend was spicier that I expected (I love spicy stuff but she doesn't) but those are the only knocks I can think of. The food was delicious, the service was friendly and helpful. It was a very good experience!

    (4)
  • Zach M.

We loved all of the food but the service was very slow and inattentive. Also the portions for our main courses (Chicken Vinaloo and Chicken Masala) were not very big. It seemed like there was mostly rice and not enough of the actual dish. We had Chicken Pakora for an app and it was very good. The garlic naan was also good. If they just had a better front-of-house staff then it would have been easily a five star experience.

We have been coming to this place since it opened about once every 3 months at least. We drop at the very least 40.00 a check here (for 2 people) We love the food and never had a bad experience. However, in Feb my mother and I had dinner and after paying our bill, the woman came up and told us we owed her 60.00 for a bill we ditched out on in sept. We were both confused, why she hadn't brought this up to us the one of the times we came back after this supposed "bill", and why she was waiting until Feb to bring it up. Furthermore, she had no record that we even owed her for this supposed "bill". She couldn't produce the original bill or the order My mother is a pretty well known woman in the community in the education field, so she was really offended, and didn't want a scene so we paid the bill and agreed to boycott the place. I am not sure what happened exactly, if there was a mix up between the staff, or maybe they are just hurting for money.who knows either way it really snubbed our taste for Indian food. unfortunately for them, they lost some of their best customers due to their arrogance
