The beers we had were solid IPAs, not the best ever, but pretty darn good. The Imperial Stout was also quite tasty to-go. Great patio out back!

3.5 stars! Come for the beer, stay for the beer (and the garlic fries). On a previous Methow Valley visit we were thrilled to discover Old Schoolhouse and the oft-mentioned Ruud Awakening IPA. As a hop lover, their version is stellar: just the right amount of heft with that hint of citrus that I adore. Training-wheel IPA this is not! Other favorites are the Uncle Big's Brown Ale (rich, smooth, hint of molasses), the Hooligan Stout (dark, substantial without being heavy, and a lovely traditional recipe without erring too chocolate or coffee - not that there's anything wrong with those styles either!), and anything from the Brewer's Reserve Series (the Imperial IPA or Imperial Stout, with Theo chocolate nibs). They tempted me with a Barleywine on the menu as part of the Brewer's Reserve, but I was told they don't actually have it yet. Curses! The food is just fine; everyone liked their meals (sandwiches, mac & cheese, clam chowder soup of the day, Bluebird farro burger) so I'd imagine this is as good a place as any in Winthrop to eat, especially if beer is really what's on the menu (or the garlic fries, which were fresh-tasting and vibrant with flecks of parsley and the perfect smattering of minced garlic sprinkled over). In the summertime there's a beautiful back patio area overlooking the river, with lots of family-friendly seating all-round. Not a food destination per se, but as a spot to drink and eat enough to keep up your strength for sampling, it's perfect. Plus, they do engage in some local and seasonal sourcing for the menu, always a nice touch. We are always on the lookout for Old Schoolhouse's 22-ounce bottles in stores around Seattle (the Imperial Stout is a reliable find, fortunately!), and you can of course stock up on less-distributed ones at the brewery itself. A practice I highly suggest....

So far behind on my reviews!!! Went here during Labor Day Weekend. Sat out on their wonderful back patio area. Chatted with the friendly waiter about their beers before deciding on the IPA. Hubby and I split some tasty fish & chips as we were saving our appetitie for dinner later. Walked around the cute little town and then popped into the Mexican restaurant next door. We could here the live music from the Schoolhouse Brewery without having to pay the cover. ;)

Bumping my rating down to a 3. We come everyone we are in Winthrop, but the service with Mallory was terrible this past weekend. No drink refills, annoyance when I asked for an extra plate, but was sugary nice when the bill came. Had the fish taco wrap and it was great.

Our second time back here, and still loving it. The beer is second to none: the Ruud Awakening IPA is their hallmark, and never disappoints. Its malty, hoppy flavor hints at a barleywine without the kick. The Fresh Hop IPA has a citrus floral bouquet that goes down well. Food is excellent. Cowboy burger, with its jalapeños, bacon, and carmelized onions, is both mouthwatering and heartburn fodder. We had a mushroom mac & cheese last time here, which I recall fondly eight months later. And the herb fries are addictive.

We visit the Methow Valley often and always stop in. The food is well prepared, and delish ! But, the beer is Amazing good! Especially the IPA ( they had 2 types of IPA. last time we were there.) Live music on the weekends and friendly people enjoying life ! Great location in downtown Winthrop and if the weather is nice, get a table outside on the river. Love this place!

Had lunch here today and had the Cobb salad. The bacon and blue cheese and dressing were very good! The service was great and quick and friendly. Would recommend and come back again.

This spot is definitely a place you need to go while in Winthrop. Its the local hangout. They had live music on Friday and Saturday while we visited on a January weekend. Very comfy inside in a cool historic building. We didn't eat and had beer only. The beer was pretty good for a local brew pub, but were not my style of brews.

They may have some good beer, but we were very disappointed with the food and service. I think they are understaffed, we had to wait long periods for everything. GF got the flank steak, looked grilled, tasted like nothing, kinda chewy, and not hot. The server had to leave through the backdoor to get the food. My chicken breast sandwich was no better, bland, not hot, and nothing special at all. I had a beer, GF had a spiced cider, the fries were OK, but all this cost over 36 bucks. We wont be back for anything other than beer.

Great microbrew, fine pub food and a nice outdoor setting creekside. This is a relaxed, family-friendly pub with live-music on the weekend evenings.

Came here with mom and brother on a Tuesday at 3:30 in late June. Has a lot of character. Small and quaint inside, but has a very large patio overlooking the river. The patio was closed when we were there. Friendly staff. Town was busy, but restaurant was not. We just enjoyed appetizers. Fresh herb fries were deliciously fragrant and had that perfect crisp. "Pub Pretzel" was clearly just a frozen pretzel and not worth the $4. The chicken wings, with Chipotle Honey BBQ had great flavor and just a bit of heat, but had a soggy texture. Limited menu. Brother enjoyed the IPA and ESB.

A+ beers A- food Overall, worth the stop. We would have hit this place twice on our long weekend if they were open on Monday.

You will miss out if you walk past this little (on the street) building without checking it out. It's pie shapes so as it gets to the river it's quite large - large enough to have a party or a wedding reception. I might have had I not known about it before I got to Winthrop. Superior beer - I enjoyed 3 kinds over my two days stay. Ruud Awakening IPA (worth the drive), Epiphany Pale, and Uncle Bigs Brown (yummy dark and chocolaty mmm). I not only got to meet the famous BLAZE the brewmaster but he took my honey fishing right there on the spot - I haven't seen Steve move that fast in ages - off he went with a big grin on his face. Evidently Blaze isn't just a brewmaster he's a master fisherman as well. From the super cool ambiance of the 1st floor where the bar is with it's artistic warmth from local artist & owner Laura Ruud's slump glass lighting and stained glass - to the cool vintage log style seating - it is just cozy, clean and cool. OH but wait, outdoor seating above overlooking the river and sometimes live music and if you venture down the steps, actual river side seating - ok that really catches my attention. We were lucky to go when the weather was perfect and they had a live band called "The True Spokes" and Indie Band that rocked us out for hours. Probably as good as anyone who was the Blues Fest. FOOD - I had heard about the fish tacos from my clients Pam Jenkins and Mary McCrea, locals - and took their advice. Oh dear, possibly the best halibut wrap tacos I've had and trust me, I've eaten them everywhere I go in and out of the US. And served with baby carrots and dip, love that - perfect. There were lots of salads and healthy fare as well as traditional pub fare - great assortment. If in town, don't miss this little jewel. They just celebrated 4 years - here is one gal who hopes to visit it a few times a year for many many moons!

Excellent service, great beer selection and delicious bar food! Try the steak sandwich or if you want something spicy, the cowboy burger has a good kick.

Winthrop is such a cute little town. Decided to eat dinner here while in town for a performance. I was very happy with my experience! I ordered the Avocado Pepper-jack and Bacon Burger. Blew my mind. the Avocado and cheese melted together and was smothered on top of the big juicy burger. The fries went really well with this because they were the seemingly breaded ones. Great for dipping into the globs of cheese/avocado mix that had fallen into the basket as I bit into the huge burger. I washed this all down with their award winning stout and was very satisfied with everything- especially their service. What a very pleasant waitress! My friend and I didn't come late enough but this place also plays live music on the weekends. Definitely going back there if I'm ever in the area again!

Great beer selection, but food and service were not so great. The food seemed less than fresh and the service was slow (but they were friendly). If you want beer only, this is your place. For food I'd go elsewhere.

Visited on 6/15/13 - great live music playing on the patio. Hayley was our Server, she was very attentive - very friendly, knowledgable about all their great brews and the flavor profiles - she had us sample a few to find the right one. Beer was *cold* and food was great. We'll be back!

If your coming to taste some great beers you've come to the right place. Every beer on the taster tray was above average, and the Ruud Awakening was one of the best I've tasted this year. Keep up the good work my friends. If your coming for lunch or dinner think twice. The outdoor deck and patio provide a comfortable space to drink and dine. The food is your typical burgers, fish and chips, nachos, etc. Now get ready for the service. I would give 4 stars for the beer, but the service is so bad I give 1 star. I've never given 1 star. But , the service was so bad it was comical. There was 1 guy who was working his butt off and seemed to really care. But as far as the 4 girls went I swear they had to be on something. One was just walking in circles, while one walked up and down stairs carrying one glass at a time. While this was going on one was putting on her lipstick. I do give them credit for getting our beer to the table, but after that they just stared at the sky. I swear I thought we were on some candid camera show. They do come in 1st place for worst service ever. Bring your growler and grab a pizza somewhere else. Love and kindness to all. Yes even you crazy girls

There's been a change in management and Im now a huge fan. The beers are fabulous. The brewmaster has won some serious awards for the Ruud Awakening IPA. Google the beer if you don't trust me. Good stuff. Service and food is so much better than it was a few years ago. Still has the nice outdoor back patio. We went back several times this past summer and enjoyed ourselves. Kid-friendly but limited kid menu options. Still worth a repeat visit!

Good food and drinks, love the outdoor seating by the river. Waitress looked off in the distance when I gave her my order, took a while to get her to warm up. Would definitely go back next time we head that way.

I like this place and I like the beer. Should be enough said but I guess I'll elaborate. Went here for the third time this past weekend while I was there for a wedding. I usually opt to sit next to the river in the shade but the seating was full. The bar was the next choice which is fine also. My buddy and I split the fish'n chips and a pretzel. The fish'n chips were great, little bit different batter but still good. The pretzel had a bit to much salt in it but that's an easy fix to get off. As for the beer.. I buy this stuff in the store allot. Reasonably priced and a good solid drinking IPA which is what I want. I did however try some of the brown which was delicious. I'll continue to make this a stop every time I'm in the area.

Great burgers and great beer. A friend that lives locally told us to try this place out. 4 stars because the service was so-so. It's bigger inside than you would think.

During our recent trip around the North Cascades Highway Loop, we stopped in Winthrop of course to see the "old west." While doing some research online before our trip, I came across the Old Schoolhouse Brewery and based on previous reviews, I left it out of our "list of things to do in Winthrop." But when we arrived in Winthrop last weekend, the sunny weather, and the thought of several draft beers to pick from drew us inside. We were pleasantly greeted by a server right away who found us a perfect table on the back deck. She took our beer orders right away and gave us a few minutes to look over the food menu. The burgers that passed our tables looked delicious but we opted to order a pre lunch snack of wings and nachos. I'm not much of a wing person but they were very tasty. The nachos on the other hand were covered with cheese and hit the spot! After finsihing our first beers, the head brewer stopped by to see how we liked our beers and then we asked him for suggestions on our second beer. Since he brews the beer he was able to compare what we'd just had to the other beers on tap. I apprecaited how personable he was. We stayed for another around of beers and watched this place fill up completely with happy people enjoying their beers and food. I'm surprised by the previous reviews for this place. It might be a tourist trap here, but it was the perfect stop after a long drive from Marblemount. I'd stop in here again if I'm ever traveling through Winthrop!

My husband and our friends had lunch last weekend at the Old Schoolhouse Brewery. The service was excellent: friendly and intelligent. The hamburgers were some of the best we have had, according to my husband. I had the grilled chicken breast with fresh mozzeralla and pesto sauce: to die for! I loved it. Really looking forward to returning to this excellent little restaurant at my next visit to Winthrop.

Lovely outdoor seating right on the river and very tasty beer! I had their Brown ale and my significant other had their Pale. I ordered the steak sandwich and was blown away. The steak was tender and delicious. The fries were mediocre at best. Great location though! I will definitely be back.

Years ago my co-workers and I enjoyed this "brew pub", but in recent years there has been poor customer service. This past July a group of six of us requested seating. With available seating in back the bartender calmly said " you can come in and sit down but you probably won't be served. This was on July 22 2013 in the late afternoon, so we took our full wallets and ate next door. Something similar happened last July 2013. I guess customer service is not a priority with them.

The back patio is right on the riverbank and is a totally awesome spot. I had the hot shot burger and it was loaded up with blue cheese, sauteed onions and jalapanos and their own beer sauce. YUMMY. Big burger patty too. The fries were beer battered and hot. My friends had the fish and chips and pulled pork sandwich and everyone had good things to say about their food. Service was fine. I like that you can refill your own water from the cooler outside. I'd love to come back sometime for live music. There small stage sits on the back deck and has the river as the backdrop.

Awesome beer with solid pub food. The brewmaster Blaze has done some wonderful things in a short time. Its great to find Stephanie behind or local artist Michael Caldwell behind the bar pouring the tasty brews. The IPA is a great NW style with plenty of hops, and the Brown is perfect for those with a maltier preference. The food is very good, Sunday's special (Roast Turkey Sandwich) is amazing! And I suspect the Saturday night Roast Turkey dinner is also great. Been coming here for 3 years, and easily the best beer in the valley, one of the best in Washington. Was very happy when they started distribution on the Westside.

My friends' band was playing here Friday and Saturday night so a couple of us tagged along for the trip out (north) east. The building itself looks quite small, but it extends far back. There's a lovely patio with stairs that lead down to even more outdoor seating. What I found especially enjoyable was everything faced the river which you couldn't always see depending on where you sat, but it was very peaceful. Since the last review (sometime in mid July 2011) they've built a stage area for bands and set up speakers and lighting all around. I thought it was very nicely done and it complimented the band's appeal. They purposely left a big open space directly in front of the stage for people to dance if they so choose which I really liked. The service was excellent. I felt like whether I knew the band or not the owner and employees would have treated me just as graciously. Each one we had some type of interaction with were really friendly, attentive and talkative without being overly so. Winthrop is a very small town, but also quite touristy so I'm sure they're used to all kinds of crowds. Their entire beer selection is domestic which I find wonderful and the servers knew their stuff. I'd mentioned the Brewery to a co-worker and she recommended the Blonde, a very light beer. Not being a fan of beer in general I found it fairly enjoyable and no, I'm not being sarcastic. And the food! Pretty damn good! My sister and I split the fish taco wrap and it was SO GOOD. SO GOOD. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. And the prices weren't bad at all! The Brewery is a essential stop if you're traveling to Winthrop. And if you can, go on Friday and Saturday nights for live music. It can get quite crowded and the tables outside especially fill up so get there before 8pm (usually when the music act will begin). They're only open until 10:30PM so be sure you get enough time to really enjoy as much as you can. A big thank you to Casey (owner) and Evan (server) for their hospitality!

This is a great place to stop and have a few beers while in town. The ESB is good, the Rudd Awakening IPA is worth the stop alone. Headed back today to try several more. The food is what is expected (good). The burgers are delicious, and hit the spot with a fresh brew. Pretzel was nothing fancy (but is was hot and good - just a regular pretzel), but the dipping sauce was worth every penny... If your on the outdoor patio, the wait staff gets busy, so be patient.

  • Heather J.

I really enjoyed the fries I had here, as well as the chips and gaucamole. Sampled a few beers, but none of them stand out to me. The building itself is quite adorable. Although I was freezing when sitting at the bar and had to move. This place appears to get quite crowded. I think it would have been more enjoyable to sit on the back porch by the river, but the weather was bad and this area was closed. If I am ever back though I will defintely check that area out as I am sure it has more breathing room and is not quite so loud. As we were leaving they were setting up equipment for a band later that night while I didn't wait to check it out it seems like this place is way too small for that much music and even the setup was a bit of hassle to the people trying to eat in peace.

Wow! What a pleasant surprise. We had just arrived in Winthrop looking for a place for lunch. We found ourselves standing in front of the Old Schoolhouse Brewery and another restaurant. We basically flipped a coin to make our decision. The coin chose wisely. We started with an IPA a Pale Ale and a soft pretzel. Awesome beer and pretzel. My husband bought some 22 oz. IPA's to bring home. Then we shared the pork sandwich. Delicious. Great bun, generous portion of pork with spicy slaw. The staff were super friendly and attentive. Very interactive experience with the staff and other patrons. A great beginning to our stay in Winthrop. Thank you O.S.B. We will be back

Four stars 'cause this place is in the center of nada, and hwy 20 is closed; otherwise would have been three. Burgers and fries were fine, though to my taste the bun was unremarkable and patty on the fast-food small size but hood quality beef. Beers: ya, ok not bad. Double D blonde is nice when there are few other options. Amber was a little bitter but possibly was a poor pour (no head, flat). Was looking forward to chocolate stout pudding but at 6:30 pm on a Saturday they were sold out. Baaaa... I'll remember that.

Great spot, great atmosphere. It was busy when we walked in, but it was the fourth of july weekend and the town itself was buzzing. Food was pretty good, I'd definitely get the pulled pork sandwich again. Burger was decent too. Their Rudd IPA is very good.

Stopped by on a slow Saturday afternoon. Because of the weather (some much needed rain was sporadically moving through the area and especially hitting the west side of the North Cascades), there wasn't as many people in town as I've seen in the past. When my wife and I showed up, there was a 15 minute wait, which was just perfect to get a microbrew from the bar and enjoy the scenery on the back deck. Our table turned out to be right on the river and was wonderfully comfortable. My wife had the nachos and I had fish and chips. We both thought the food was wonderful and tasty. My wife had the Hooligan Stout and I had the Ruud Awakening IPA. It was nicely complementary to the food and to the ambiance. The service was okay. Not the best and not the friendliest, but not nearly as bad as has been mentioned in other reviews. Then again, it was relatively slow so perhaps when its busy, it gets a little crazier. All in all, a nice spot to enjoy the river flowing past, have a nice meal and enjoy a nice cold brew.

The beer here is great. It's been getting consistently better over the last few years. The food prices and quality are okay. We have had consistently good food and the price isn't too high... Where it all goes wrong is the service. I think it might kill their bar staff to serve anyone without attitude and in a timely fashion. I walk up to the bar, and have to ask to be helped. I ask, "I see the menu just says seasonal so, what are the seasonal selections?" Girl bartender says they are on the board and continues her conversation with her co worker. I walk over there... Read the selections... Come back... Have to ask again to be served. I select their session ale (which was good) and another beer for my boyfriend. He comes up to pay for the beers and she gives us attitude for wanting to pay with card. I understand it costs businesses money to pay with card, but $1 charge seems a bit steep. We didn't say anything to her about this but she approached us like we were being aggressive toward her about this. The entire experience rubbed me the wrong way and made me not want to tip (I still did, I'm not an animal!) Eventually, we got to sit down by the river on the lower deck and our server there was nice. It's just unfortunate that consistent bad service from one employee can sour an experience so thoroughly. If there was another brewery in town, I wouldn't come here.

My husband and I don't drink, so this wasn't that great a place for us, nor was it really aimed at our 'demographic'. We came here for a light dinner as the last place in town we hadn't tried yet. I ordered a small ceasar salad, which was okay. It wasn't the worst I've ever had, and for the price it wasn't a bad value. The service was okay... the food came out reasonably quickly, but it was clear that the server didn't really know what to do with us since we didn't drink. She didn't know what sodas they had. They have live music in the back, which wasn't happening the evening we were there. I think this place best suits youngish singles in search of a beer and maybe a new friend or two.

I came out on assignment with the Washington Trail Association, and what I found really blew my mind... I didn't expect there to be good food this far out from civilization, but the Old Schoolhouse Brewery delivered. The entire place is fabulous - from the cute interior (with stained glass made by the owner) to the wonderful outdoor riverside seating, complete with great live music. And the food... oh, the food... their guacamole burger is one of the best I've had in a long while, possibly ever. And the garlic fries... crispy and delicious. Wow. I'm not a beer drinker, but the gentleman next to me says it's a 2 time national award winner, and his favorite beer in the world. Definitely worth a stop if you are ever in the area.

Let me qualify this entry by saying that we ordered nachos which may not be a real indicator of their other menu 'food'. We chose to sit on the patio out back because it was a beautiful day. There was a wait for that, as you can expect. First negative experience - once we were seated, it took about 10 minutes for our server to come and take our order. She seemed flustered as she was serving other customers, and we were literally about to walk out when she finally stopped at our table. Second negative experience - we ordered nachos with chicken as well as a pretzel with beer cheese. The nachos were very underwhelming and didn't even come with guacamole. I know the restaurant next door serves guacamole with their dishes...And one of the reasons we even came here was because they beer cheese to serve with the pretzel, but that was also underwhelming. You'd think that they'd get the bar-type food right since this establishment caters to the beer-drinking crowd. Or maybe I didn't drink enough beer in the first place? On a positive note, they have a good variety of beers and the one I tried (stout) was really good.

The Old Schoolhouse Brewery is the kind of spot I hope to find whenever I'm traveling in a new place. It isn't perfect, but it is quirky and unique with a touch of local color. A spot where locals hang out and tourists cycle through. A good bar that offers an appealing place to while away a couple hours and relax. It's appearance is deceptive as well, with a small footprint on the street hiding a much larger venue that extends out to a deck and down to a patio near the river. As a restaurant the place is average. A typical bar menu of appetizers, burgers and salads that is good enough, but unremarkable with service that's typically small town (friendly, unhurried, and highly variable). As a bar, it's another story. They brew their own beer, which is quite good, and have a selection of local ciders and wine. You can sit inside, on a covered deck, or a patio on the river where they host live local music. While most of the place is first come first serve, the riverside patio unsually requires a wait. If your looking for a great meal, I suggest you dine somewhere else. But for drinks and entertainment, this brewery is a great choice.

The Ruud Awakening IPA is one of the best IPAs in the state in my opinion. Set in a funky narrow wedge-shaped building, the interior is warm, cozy and inviting. Unfortunately their adorable patio was closed for the season and it was pretty crowded inside. We were squeezed in at a community table and got to know our neighbors quickly. They had live music that night and it was a perfect way to spend the evening. (Note**It helps if you go with the flow here- bringing a first date or expecting to have romantic space to yourselves here is probably not an option on a weekend night.) I ordered the chicken delight sandwich which was delicious. I also asked to add on a small side salad and found I was charged $7 (usually it's only $1-2 to upgrade to salad so that was a bit surprising on the bill). Food was average pub food kicked up a slight notch. We also purchased some IPA bombers to take home, and the waiter told us after the fact that there were other $3.50 bombers for sale that had slight defects to them (weren't filled all the way, weird label, etc) so we grabbed another of those.....although I wish I had known before purchasing/paying more for the other ones. Oh well. Overall it's a great place. I see it is for sale and really hope the new owners keep the vibe and vision going here- it is not a placed to be missed!

If you find yourself in Winthrop, use caution when visiting this place. My friends and I came in on a Saturday night when it was not too busy. We grabbed a table easily enough as there were plenty available. Soon after, one of the servers visited our table and informed us that the kitchen was closed and that they would only be serving beer for the remainder of the evening. This was okay by us, because we had already had dinner earlier and were only there to enjoy the local beer. Unfortunately, the server took off before taking a drink order. Oh well, we proceeded to wait patiently... ...some minutes later, a different server approached the table and informed us, once again, that the kitchen was closed, etc. And again, abruptly took off before we could order. So at this point we decided we would just take a growler to go, to enjoy back at our hotel, and half of our party left to wait for us at said hotel. Finally, the server returned to take an order. We asked for a growler of the 'Ruud Awakening IPA' and continued to wait. After another few minutes, he returned to ask if we'd be having that growler to go or if we'd be enjoying it in house. (Apparently oblivious to the fact we were down to two people at this point AND missing the part when we originally ordered it to go.) And then, he returned to say that the keg blew and we'd have to wait even longer while it was being changed. That's fine. I understand that will inevitably happen and places get busy. Blah blah. But what happened next was the last straw: we observed two other groups of 5+ customers come in, go straight to the bar, and get served immediately. And at least one of them got a pint of the same beer we had been waiting for all this time. To add insult to injury, the server returned with our growler and when I presented my credit card, he said he'd have to charge $1 to run a card! I was unsure if I had time traveled to a different century. I understand charging for checks under $5 or $10, but insisting on charging me the extra buck on an almost $20 growler fill is ridiculous. So instead of passively accepting this, I made sure they understood how long we waited, and how ridiculous the policy is. They did not seem to care, and threatened me with not serving us. We left with the growler after some discussion, but still paid full price + card fee. This review gets 2 stars instead of 1 only because the beer was pretty good, but their awful service otherwise ruins it. Reflecting on this incident the next day, only one thing stands out as a reason why we got such service: one member of our party happens to have a different appearance than the rest of the clientele in the establishment. The discrimination was not completely overt, but we could tell that we were actively being obstructed from being served. It seems likely that this place has a problem with people who don't "fit the mold". Again, use caution. Maybe just avoid Winthrop. The old west theme gets old after about 5 minutes anyway.

We were looking for a light lunch and a nice environment and this place fit the bill. My husband had a beer and thought it tasty, and we shared a way above average fish and chips and a green salad with dried cranberries and goat cheese that was perfectly dressed. Waitress was friendly and attentive, good lighting and seating indoors or pleasant outside seating. Prices were fair, especially given that Winthrop is a tourist town. We plan to go back when in town next to check out more beers and other menu items.

Called in an order the very extremely not so nice bartender rudely took my order, I then asked to pay for it over phone and got this for an answer, " I got way to much shit to do buddy don't have time for you." Now if that's customer service they can have their to much shit to do. Unfriendly and very stuck up if I owned that place I would be embarrassed.

Okay, I was skeptical of the food being good in a brewery. We were pleasantly surprised. After hiking 6 miles we were hungry. There were 4 of us and we all loved our dinner. 3 cheeseburgers & a chicken burger, all happy & full. Excellent herbed fries too. Good beer, wine & service. We are happy diners in Winthrop tonight.

Best beer in the state and probably the country. I had a BBQ Burger the first night and the Pork Sandwich the 2nd night. Recommend the Ruud Awakening IPA. Both burgers were great and paired with herb French fries with great target sauce with a kick to it. The only reason they get 4 stars is the lack of a host to greet guests and seat them. Place is way too busy to not have a host and I was there on a Sunday and Monday night. Lingering guest have to wait on the patio and fight for tables that open down below by the river. Also I was being starred at by people waiting up top. Many guests wander around not knowing where to go and have to rely on busy bartenders to point them in the right direction. Still the staff is on point and they know their beers and the area very well. I will always look for an excuse to drive through Winthrop to visit the great place.

The food is good in house. Don't ever take a to go order. Its a huge ripe off. I paid $12.00 for a salad with crasins and lettuce. The chicken sandwich was dry.

Updating my review: Stating the obvious- Ruud Awakening is the best IPA I've had. And I am a NW IPA hop head. Their balance of the floral hops with a slightly higher ABV makes this, quoting their new sticker, a "destination beer". Interestingly, my wife, who is not a hop head at all, loves the imperial IPA. The menu continues to improve, and I am glad to see more local offerings, like grains from Bluebird Farms. Note: cash is greatly appreciated, as credit card fees have increased, and those will get passed along to you if you use plastic.

Five stars for food, minus a star for SO MANY fruit flies. We sat right by the door, but it was almost unbearable. Food and service were both great, as was the beer. We had burgers and they were very fresh and delicious. Great buns, too.

This quaint little place has great beer. My personal favorite was the Imperial IPA, and it packs quite the punch at 9.3 ABV. The evening I was there they also had a guy and gal playing acoustic music and they had a good sound. Service was friendly and prompt.

We enjoyed their beer and food, but honestly this has been an unhappy experience. We hoped to get a seat for 2 at the outdoor patio area, but it just filled up, so the waiter added us on the wait list and said its around 25 minute wait. The indoor area was pretty empty at that time, but we decided to wait. 50 minutes later, we still haven't got a table (several patio tables have been waiting for their checks for 10+ minutes), and the indoor area was full with everyone waiting for food. So it finally took us 1 hour to get seated and then another hour to get food. Looks like this problem has been reported by other yelpers long time ago, so hopefully the management can ease the bottleneck problem in the kitchen soon.

Old Schoolhouse Brewery is the quintessential house bar that I hope to stumble across every time I find myself working or vacationing away from home. They've got terrific beer, good food, the prices are fair and the staff is friendly.

The food was decent. Nothing to write home about. However, the service was straight up lousy. I'm going to give this place a bit of slack though, because I know its hard to find good employees in a small town. It looked like the average age of servers was 15-years-old, and our server was definitely not older than 16. I knew there was going to be trouble when he asked for our order without any kind of notepad. He forgot our appetizer, and my wife's salad.

If you're cool with the quirks, you'll love this place. We visited Winthrop in late October, as things were winding down. We later learned that a lot of the town closes even before the winter closure of North Cascades Highway (part of the Cascade Loop that includes our home: Coupeville). We'd been warned by friends that the brewery is only open for dinner this time of year. As soon as we checked into our "hotel," we walked over. The tiny place was crowded with locals. At 6:00 p.m. on a Thursday there were no tables. People at the bar felt compelled to talk to us for no reason (we sere just looking for a table, not lingering). Many of those locals were occupying tables for six with just one or two people. Based on what I've read in another review, it seems that some locals are attached to bar stools and like to offer not-always-friendly advice to visitors. Because this place had been highly recommended by people from our island, we came back the next night, but at 5:00 p.m. We were able to grab the last table, probably vacant because it was next to the area cleared for the live music later in the evening. Service was fine. Porter was OK. Food was solid pub fare. Seasoned fries were good, though not cut in-house. Chipotle pulled pork was as spicy as I would want. Substitute ($2) salad in lieu of fries was good.

Yummmmmm!!!! Delicious!! We had the nachos, garlic fries, artichoke dip and the southwest Cobb salad. Everything great!! We also LOVED the Ruud Awakening IPA. We came on a Saturday night and service was a little rough. We had to ask a couple times for 2 different things but otherwise they were really busy-- and we understood. We came back on a Sunday for lunch and everything was great. Lee A.'s review was hilarious. Take notice that he took a picture of AMAZING looking nachos and then knocked them. Really dude? Are you impossible to please? Lol.. For burgers and bar food, this IS the place!

The cute exterior caught our eye when we drove into town. Great beer I would highly recommend the IPA. We had dinner here as everything in town was closed. Typical bar menu however the bacon blue cheese burger was delicious! Friendly service and a casual atmosphere. Great place to catch a game! Will be back to enjoy a beer on the river come summertime.

We loved this bar! If you are in the mood for some good pub grub, check this out. Also has a fun atmosphere and gets really packed during the tourist season. I loved the fish tacos and the salad!

Great atmosphere. Good beer. Decent food. It seemed like a great place to hang out and enjoy your company as well as meet some new friends. Most people there were interacting and mingling with locals as well as tourists. A very friendly place. And the fries were delicious.

UPDATE: The manager contacted me to assure me that they are addressing personnel issues and I believe that with some attention he will resolve these problems. I found his comments encouraging. Look over more recent reviews to see how they are progressing - I really hope he succeeds. I must reiterate that the outside patio area is perfect on a warm evening and their craft beers are really good. I am raising my rating to 3 stars given the manager's personal response to me. I won't go higher at this time because my past experience is what it was. I sincerely hope that newer reviews will reflect the restaurant's success in overcoming the problems we experienced.

For as busy as this place gets, I was pleased with the service I received. You have to get there upon opening to get the deck seating, if you're not too fond with waiting to be seated. My husband and I just went there for drinks, however the 2 guys sharing our table with us, really had awesome food that looked tasty. For sure next time we visit we well not eat areas of time and do drinks here. Defintely we will do both~ dine and drinks! Enjoy!

I wish that I had read yelp before we went this past August, but we were there last August and like it. I thought my food was good when I finally got it. We were seated around 5:30. She took some of our drink orders. By the time she came back and took our order it was 6pm. My husband had to ask several times if our meal was almost ready to serve. "Yes, any moment now, how about free refills for the kids pops?", says the server. Finally my husband had to ask another server and she found the order and brought it to us at 6:45. We finished in 15 minutes. My husband was so upset that he couldn't enjoy his meal. It took us hunting the server down (7:20) to give us our bill. Almost $90 and no itemized receipt. We went last year and the service was slow, but this year it was ridiculous. We didn't have any special requests or demands. Won't be back. I wish we had left, I regret going there.

Food is great, love the place, but if you are going to start showing a Seahawk playoff game, finish it off. Amazing the decision to turn the game off at half time for a band. Most of the restaurant emptied out and went to Jacks. How much money was lost?! Lost at least $80 from me for the rest of the night. Might want to think twice about ever going here to watch a SEAHAWKS PLAYOFF game.

It appears that if.... IF, you are an IPA drinker, you might be a happy camper here. I don't drink IPA and therefore, find the selection rather dull. We brought our growler with in hopes of filling it up. But we will be passing on it this time. They do have an awesome patio area and we can't comment in the food. So keep reading on to the other reviews.

If you're ever in Winthrop, you'll want to stop in on the Old Schoolhouse Brewery. They're right on the main street of town and offer some of their local brews as well as some other craft brews. Be sure to walk down towards the back of the bar and to the back patio area. You can sit outside along the river. The food is good and they often have live music performing on their small stage out back.

We stopped by here after a horse riding event to grab some fresh cold beer and food before driving 4 hours back to Seattle. Maybe because I was super hungry but I remembered the food was extra delicious. What I liked best is that the surrounding area and including this place had that old Western theme going. It was nice to pretend to go into a saloon if only for 5 seconds. They also have a pretty big patio area out in the back where we all sat and enjoyed the rest of the sunshine. Service was super friendly. I would not mind stopping by here again if I ever pass by Winthrop again. Hee Ya! (By the way don't look that up in the urban dictionary...)

The service was atrocious. We ordered two dinner salads with other meals. After a long wait they bought one dinner salad and said the other one was coming. After everyone finished their meal they said they had run out of salad. I ordered a chicken sandwich. Another half hour passed by after everyone had finished dinner. They brought the bill and were giving us 25% off on the dinner we had not gotten. We asked to see the manager. We got it sorted out. On the way out the door people sitting at the bar talking to the manager told us not to come back. No worries we won't be back. This place will go out of business with this kind of service.

My wife and I have had lunch and dinner at least 10 times in the last 2 years or so there. This is a must stop when you are in Winthrop. The menu is solid with nice changes each time. The beer selection is amazing, but what makes this place so great are the friendly people that serve and manage Old Schoolhouse Brewery. We will always stop on our way East from Anacortes or on our way back from Chelan. Job well done folks!

Of our top three breweries, Icicle Ridge, Diamond Knott, and Old Schoolhouse, the Schoolhouse is our favorite brewery to go to. The beer is awesome, my girlfriend's absolute favorite is their IPA. You can't beat sitting on their patio by the river on a hot summer day drinking beer and eating good food. They did change their hot wings awhile ago which was a disappointment, but the food is excellent. And did the mention the beer is awesome?!! We make sure we have at least one camping trip in the area each summer simply so that we can make a trip to the Schoolhouse.

After an afternoon of cross-country skiing we were looking for a brew and a snack and the Old Schoolhouse Brewery served that up just fine! I had the Epiphany Pale which I thought was delicious. JP didn't like his IPA as much, but the Amber also got rave reviews by our friend. They have cider on draft which made our non-beer drinking friend very happy. The menu isn't huge but the nachos (with a fantastic housemade salsa) and the inferno wings hit the spot. The wings aren't traditional and were so-so, but the nachos were good and helped to fill our calorie deficit from skiing. Yes, service was slow even though it wasn't crowded, but we weren't in a huge hurry (and honestly, didn't find service to be any different than my numerous trips to the Twisp River Pub). I would definitely go back here for a beer (I think their beer is MUCH better than TRP). We purchased a couple of growlers to bring back to the cabin for our friends to try who hadn't gone skiing with us and they were finished in no time flat. I think if you are going to check this place out you need to go with an open mind...it's a small place in a small town, don't expect big city service. If you go in with the right attitude you will have a good time. Plus they have happy hour prices from 3-5, what's not to like?!

Want great, freshly crafted beer? This is the place. I'm an IPA fan. This place has IPA nailed. The Ruud Awakening is a great traditional IPA, but their Imperial IPA take smooth hoppyness to a whole new level. Beer is becoming a specialty of this place, but the food is great too. I suggest the fish taco wrap or any of the burgers. I'm partial to the build-your-own burger-blue cheese and bacon...can't go wrong with that combo. The lighter fare is lacking here, but if you want beers and burgers, this is your kind of place.

The fish and chips were excellent, grain/mushroom veggie burger very good and garlicky for you garlic lovers. Prices are reasonable. Portions were large and we took food home. They make some tasty micros and have something for every palate. Service was also fast and friendly. They are open for lunch, too, which one of the other recommended restaurants was not. We'll go back for sure!

If you want truly horrible food, Old Schoolhouse Brewery is your place! Look, how can you screw up a burger and sweet potato fries? The sweet potato fries were of the frozen variety - at least buy Ore-Ida and not the store brand if you are going this route! My wife got the pasta which is her fault completely. You can't expect any form of pasta that isn't made by Chef Boyardee in a town like Winthrop. They should stick to the brew and stay away from the schoolhouse cafeteria food. Hey...at least they got the resto name right! That gets one star!

If you are looking for good beer and a nice atmosphere this is your place...if you are looking for edible food and remotely decent service this is NOT your place. My husband and I were in Winthrop last weekend and we were looking for a place to stop for a quick bite; we were greeted by an unenthusiastic server who seemed as though she would rather be anywhere but there. I ordered a Greek salad, because I figured you can't screw up a Greek salad, right...wrong! The dressing was some sort of tahini but it was on the verge of turning, it was sour and chunky, the cucumbers were soft and the tomatoes were very under-ripe. My husband had a pulled pork sandwich which was okay (store bought BBQ sauce) but the French fries were straight out of the freezer. All the while we had little interaction with our server who was completely disinterest in seeing how our meal was or offering refills of iced tea. On a positive note, the beer was good and the location is nice.

What a joke. Our food was OKAY, so theres one star. My brother asked for just a side of fries with ranch. No ranch arrived. And neither did our waiter, not even once but to drop our food off. The beer is crap. Bitter, overpowering and devoid of any real flavor, which says a lot since Im the kind of guy who will enjoy anything from St Bernardus to Schlitz. On top of that, he gave everyone the wrong beer. The waiter filled our water ONCE. It was 85 degrees out and we mentioned how hot it was outside and how water will really hit the spot so that was kind of a letdown. He never once came back until about 15 minutes after we were done and said "you ready for your bill now?" Whatever. Enjoy your $1 tip, jack**s.

Good beer and good food for cheap (for a city slicker). We came in at five on a Monday with zero wait (seat yourself). The outdoor seating was great. The only negative was the waiter who served us the beer was underage and didn't have a clue as to what the beers were like. All and all it was good thus no real complaints for me relative to the price. But for Peet's sake, hire people of the legal drinking age so they know what the heck your brew pub sells!

Personally I would only give this dive 0 stars....but that is not an option! Wow, where to start? There were at least five waitstaff on a weekday and maybe 6 people in the restaurant. Not at all busy. We waited (group of 8) for approximately 20 minutes to even get water. We should have walked away at that point. There were four kids dining with us that were all hungry. Finally, the waiter came to take a drink order. I have to say the 1 star is for beer quality! We only wished that we would have had the option to have more.....they never came back to ask. As for dinner, after ordering, we waited an hour and a half for food that arrived cold, undercooked, overcooked and horrible. We were so disappointed that we talked to the manager, which is something we NEVER do! It was that bad!! He made a multitude of excuses why things went the way they went....again, not my problem! Finally, he knew how bad our experience was, he did end up comping our whole party. Hence the one star again! It is a small town and a tourist town, but come on, figure it out people! Try the pizza place down the road, you will be happy you did!

  • Heidi H.

Service was mediocre as our waitress was inexperienced and seemed out of it. My husband, who is really into microbrews, didn't really care for either of the beers he tried. We split the house burger (way overcooked with soggy bottom bun) and a wedge salad. The highlight would be the wedge salad, which is such a basic item that isn't saying much. The outdoor seating area by the river is the high point.

For a Friday night pub visit these folks totally botched it. Firstly, they had four, MAYBE five wait staff for approximately 175 people. Our entrees arrived, a mere hour after ordering, and well before the gazpacho soup appetizer. The burgers were barely warm as were the sweet potato fries. They were out of all of their house brews EXCEPT for the left over winters (a la nutmeg & cinnamon)...a shame. They truly suffered from staffing & execution issues, although their vision is true. We might try it again, given the next time we visit its less busy.

We enjoyed beer and burgers on the deck. We enjoyed our beers. A brown, not too hoppy, with a light and smooth chocolate caramel taste. Amber beer nice malty taste, with a slight bitterness. Beer brewed on premise. Friday and Saturday live band on the deck. Burgers were ok, beer was better.

I went to the Old Schoolhouse Brewery excited to have a big juicy veggie burger, complete with fries, appetizer and desert. I was disappointed that they did not offer a veggie option, but was surprised that they refused to even consider serving me one of their signature burgers without the patty, just the fixings on a bun. (I offered to pay full price) This was the first example of a few frustrating experiences I have had at The Old Schoolhouse. I have been here a few times, however their continual lack of flexibility has caused me to go elsewhere when hungry in WInthrop.

I just returned from the Methow and I have to say that I'm surprised to see such negative reviews for this place. I had a great experience, but probably because I was only there for a beer and some sweet potato fries (which were not bad). The beer was excellent- I had Uncle Big's Brown Ale and it was a yummy, chocolatey beer. Everyone I was with was happy with their drink ,and the wait staff seemed to be pretty efficient. Also, there was a live band playing jazz standards- older ones and newer ones- and they were very entertaining. The jazz band, combined with the cozy, renovated-schoolhouse interior, made for a very nice aprez-ski experience. For a small brewery in a small town, I thought the place was pretty good! I'll have to edit this posting after I've had a chance to try the food, however.

Wow. I'm surprised at the other reviews on this place. I've been here twice now and this place is a real find. Their brews are extremely good and the burgers actually taste like beef. Oh, and their beer sauce is amazing. I would eat it plain. Seriously. We also had their fish tacos, which had a wonderful slaw topping that managed to be light on the mayo but still full bodied. I asked about their fries, which are not home cut, but are perfectly crispy, with gooey potato inside and great seasoning. I guess they used to make their own, but it ended up being too time consuming and messy. The bartender definitely could have been friendlier, but the wait staff were extremely friendly and answered my multitudes of questions about the food competently and graciously. As a true beer and burger lover, I have to recommend this place wholeheartedly. They no longer have the sweet potato fries, by the way. The wait staff said they just didn't get enough demand for them. It maybe it took the owner of this place a little while to get the whole running a restaurant thing down. Wouldn't be the first time. I'll definitely have to check back on the review here to see if there is a consensus on improvement.

If you are coming here for beer only, you will be very happy. However, the food and service are suspect to say the least. The Kobe Burger (A.K.A- Costco burger) was cooked well, so there was little flavor. Had the nachos as well which I think were microwaved. The service was just not good and had to wait for 30 minutes for the food with no drink fill-ups.

    (2)
  • Beauty J.

Good beer, very good service, great atmosphere and good (but could be better) food. The Kobe beef burgers have great potential, but note to owners: invest the extra 25 cents in a quality bun instead of the mediocre one you're using right now and customers will flock to your door!

A July Wednesday evening, so hot we were looking for a place to eat on the water. The schoolhouse front is cute, inside is air-conditioned, but the "Overhang" out in back is dining right next to the the fast-flowing stream that flows through town. Our waiter Evan was enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the many brews they make there. A whole range of choices from pale and glistening to dark and daring. My cranberry-almond-goat cheese-spinach sald with broiled chicken on top was excellent. From the outside you'd never know about the Overhang, although on weekends I understand the live music there draws 'em in.
