Wonderful and tasty food be prepared to wait for a table at busy times..but well worth it.

I have not eaten here, I just did my homework in advance and the cook verified that the beans are cooked with lard and the rice is cooked with chicken broth, so I wanted to let other vegetarians and vegans know that if you want to stop by here your options will be quite restricted to things like guacamole and chips. I recently had friends take me to La Terasca and was disappointed to find out how limited and "meh" their options were (their rice is cooked in chicken broth, too) so now I know to ask about more than how the beans are made.

I think this is the best Mexican food anywhere close by. We had steak, chicken and pork tacos, a chicken quesadilla and a steak burro. It was all good. The beans are a little on the fatty/runny side but still good. The salso is good, and the guac is good, although it is more of a chunky salsa than the typical guac. Good beer selection too.

Fabulous Mexican food! Authentic and substantial. Nice service staff as well. If I have a complaint is that they have gotten too popular and I now have to wait for a table. Great drinks, reasonable prices now if they would just open an Olympia location......

We are certainly spoiled here in our small town! This is worth the drive and worth the wait!!! (I have been there 3 times this week alone!!!) We LOVE IT!!!!! Fresh..FRESH...FRESH!!!!

Wow wow wow. The BEST Mexican food I've ever had. I mean EVER!! They're opening up an Olympia location soon, I am told. The complimentary chips and salsa are great. The chips are clearly handmade and served warm. The salsa is very spicy, but has a depth of flavor from the roasted tomatoes. Everyone should order the guacamole. It's so amazing! The avocados are diced, rather than mashed. Mixed with salt, onion, cilantro, tomato, and lime, it is the perfect balance of creamy, salty, and acidic. When it came time to order, the owner brought our table small samples of four dishes: the mole, chicken tinga, chile verde, and pollo negro. The chile verde is the best of the four, though all of them were extremely tasty. The chile verde might be the best thing I've ever eaten. I swear to God, it's better than sex. The tender chunks of pork melt in your mouth and are smothered in a green tomatillo sauce that is complex and full of flavor. I could eat just the sauce by the glassful. The chicken tinga is highly recommended as well. Also, ask for their quintuplet of hot sauces. The habanero sauce will knock your socks off and your mouth will be on fire for a while, but it's worth it. All of them are good though! For dessert, I recommend the cheesecake mousse. It's like a cheesecake, but lighter and creamier, and without the stupid graham cracker crust. I don't even like dessert, but I liked this dish. I wished they had a place like this in Seattle. Wah wah wah. The one thing I disliked are the chairs. They're those wrought iron outdoor patio chairs. Extremely uncomfortable and hard. And too high! I'm 5'6" with fairly long legs and my feet did not touch the floor unless I scooched my butt towards the edge of the seat. Please change your chairs! They are torture. Everything else is wonderful. Also, be prepared for a long wait for food when they're packed, like Friday or Saturday nights.

Outstanding. Not the usual cheese coated slop that most Mexican places serve. The dishes are fresh, with delicious, distinct sauces. Make sure to order the guacamole! And the atmosphere is very nice too.

My husband and I stopped here after visiting the wolf sanctuary. We were both super hungry and super excited we found a Mexican restaurant to pig out at before our drive back to Seattle. Unfortunately the best thing about the food was the water. Hard to mess that up I guess. I ordered the Mexican green salad. The dressing was disgusting and the corn tasted very strange. I had my husband try it to make sure I wasn't crazy and he practically spit it out. How do you mess up a salad?! My husband ordered some enchiladas and he wasn't impressed with those either.

So this place isn't easy to find with Google maps - look for it in parking lot across from supermarket, not in neighborhood east of/behind Subway shop. Ambiance is great - good for family or a date. The owner served us and was super nice, clearly passionate about the restaurant and delicious authentic Mexican food. He even gave us taster tray of six hot sauces. He and he wife had invented two of them. Everything was super super fresh and delicious, particularly the guacamole and tortilla chips. I think tortillas for burrito and tacos were made by hand. Chicken was just fantastic. Well worth the detour on our way from Portland to Seattle.

I drove out of my way to Tenino today to check out this place based on the reviews. I brought my kids and I would say it is definitely not kid friendly which is unfortunate because my kids are usually good diners. I did not feel welcomed. It took about 20 minutes for our order to be taken and it was not terribly busy. Food took about 45 minutes to cook. There is no kids menu, which l think would be nice since their dishes start at the 10.00 price point. Wouldn't be hard to offer a small entree with rice and beans for the kids. Everything I needed (refills, drink orders and check), I had to flag someone down for which is embarrassing. As far as the offerings: mango Margarita was delish, my son's enchilada with red sauce was amazing. Very good Pico de gallo served with the quesadillas. Fish tacos were tasty but nothing out of the ordinary.i felt at 13.00 they were a bit overpriced and came with no sides. I would give them another try if I had no time restraints and was without kids but I really feel they could step up their customer service a notch or seven and welcome families with kids (kids menu or revisit all prices). The flavors were good though.

Great food, great atmosphere, great waitresses. The wait is worth it. All homemade food. The flan is to die for. I highly recommend Don Juan's! Everything is make fresh. Nothing is from a can. Nothing is microwaved: there isn't even a microwave in the building. Very clean, authentic atmosphere. The food is real, authentic Mexican cuisine. A lot of the dishes are different than we are used to at Americanized Mexican chain restaurants. For example: the guacamole & enchiladas are much different than we have ever had. But very good. You can really tell the staff and owners care about their customers experience.

Being from Texas I'm very picky about mexican food. Their salsa and homemade chips are excellent. The tacos are great and so are the sauces. This place is worth the 10 mile drive off of I5. I live in the Seattle area and this is a destination place when we feel like road trip.

The moment we bit into the first chip we knew we were in the right place! The service was so warm, it realy felt like family. We went 4 times the first month we discovered this place. Don Juan is a class act, he came out to greet us because he liked our classic car. We chatted and learned about the classic cars that he has. Our kids loved the food just as much as we did, that was why it was so easy to come back again and again (which we will continue to do). The sauces are so amazing, the samples are a wonderful touch, Marcella is a doll and a joy to chat with. Go here, you will not be disappointed.

Just looking for a place to eat during a road trip. What a pleasant surprise to find this gem. Food was great and staff very helpful/friendly. Mexican fusion, good quality and good price.

Another amazing visit to Don Juan's! It was crazy busy tonight...good for them, it warms my heart to see them that busy. It means they're making it! We showed up around 6:45 and were told it was a 20-25 minute wait for a table. That didn't turn us away, I was craving steak and I knew Don Juan's carne asada would do the trick! We were seated in less than 15 minutes at a four top and I offered the other two seats at our table to another couple waiting if they'd like them. Why make them wait for some tasty food, ya know? I won't go off on another tangent on how amazing the food and service was, I'll just end by saying I am still so very thankful we stumbled upon this restaurant

This is probably the BEST Mexican food (and possibly best food period) I have ever eaten. We go about twice a month or so. I have tried almost everything on the menu and have yet to be disappointed. Everything is fresh, and very authentic. Their guacamole is to die for!

Everything about my experience was spot on. The food is the most authentic you'll get around these parts. The typical Mexican restaurants you find around the PNW just can't compare to Don Juan's. To start as normal we got served a basket of chips with salsa. As with everything the chips were made in house, ate organic and gluten free. My friend and I like heat so we asked for some hot sauce to have in addition to our salsa. They brought out 5 different sauces, all made in house with a couple private recipes the owner and his wife came up with. We had the pleasure in meeting the owner and wye able to get some incite to their establishment. He was a very friendly guy and you could tell he truly cared about the experience of his customers and takes pride in the food they are serving. From what I remember in our conversation with the owner, they try to use as many local organic ingredients as possible. Explains why the food is delicious and has a fresh taste. I had the Don Juan Taco's, they give you four neat options. They allowed me to order the three different tacos so I had the steak, chicken and pork. All were very good but I highly recommend their pork, moist and full of flavor. My friend ordered the Wet Barrito which comes covered in your choice of sauce. He opted for the pork. Of course i had to have a few bites. Only other barrito I've had that compares was in Mexico. Not only was it delicious but it was big, I'd struggle to eat a full one myself. As I was looking at the menu I noticed they served beef tongue as one of your meat options, which I've never had and was telling my friend I don't think I'd want to. My buddy, being from the south, insisted that I try it, so we also ordered a side of beef tongue. Wow.....so much flavor and really tender. I highly recommended getting both the beef tongue and pork. Although it's a bit of a drive for me, I'll be back multiple times and hopefully introduce many others to Don Juan. If/when I ever go to another Mexican restaurant, it'll be compared to this place.

This is the best Mexican restaurant in Thurston County. I started with the chips and guacamole. The guacamole was as good as I have ever eaten. The chips seemed to be made on the spot. Delicious. Before our meal, the waitress came by and gave us sample ( 2 oz cup) of three different sauces they use with some meat to dip. Ever sauce was fantastic. For dinner I had the carnitas. The pork was so tender. It melted in your mouth and I could not get my son to stop eating it off my plate. My wife, Anne, ordered the mole. The sauce had a complex taste that melded together. The grilled chicken was tender. My son ordered the old stand by, the wet burrito. It was big and delicious and well stocked with steak. This is a great dining experience,

My kids and I walk over to Don Juan's every once in a while for an after-school snack. We have only tried the nachos and the guacamole and it is the BEST I have ever had. Actually, I now like guacamole, but only from this place :) It is a small restaurant in a small town. It seems to be busy most of the time. I went in last night, Wednesday, and there was a wait. We don't mind waiting for good food. I did try a margarita and it was good. The bartender told me about their cucumber cilantro margaritas, which sounds interesting. Next time! This place is not the Mayan, or any other typical Mexican place. They DO NOT serve typical Mexican food (and that's a good thing). Yes, you should take the nice drive out to Tenino and try something new!

  • Wendie L.

What a gem! Doesn't look like much from the outside but when you walk in and are asked if you have a reservation that's a sign you are in for a treat! The chips and salsa are ADDICTING! I mean it, use caution or you won't have room left over for your dinner. I had the Tinga which was amazing and my son tried the Chile Negro...he said his tastebuds had entered a whole new level of existence (he's 14!). The guacamole is actual chunks of avocado and so fresh and tasty. The service was super friendly and actually pretty quick for as busy as they were. All in all, I will be back any time I'm down this way!

  • Stevie C.

This place is amazing. I love that they have grass fed meat options, and a wide variety on their menu. The waitstaff is attentive and very thoughtful. I feel the prices are more than adequate considering the quality of what you get in return. The only problem is that it's very popular, so it's better to come during the day or make a reservation!

Atmosphere is A+, but the young lady who was our server NEVER came to take our order, I had to find her. Our complimentary chips were good, but the salsa seemed no more than caned, crushed tomatoes with some black pepper. There were no visible onions or cilantro. This was the worst salsa I've ever tasted. Actually, yucky! My entree was Molletes, an open face pork torta garnished with beans, tomato, cilantro and melted cheese served with a couple of slices of guacamole. This was terribly bland. As I always do, I asked to substitute black beans for the refried beans, but this authentic Mexican restaurant didn't have any in the house! After delivering our dinners, our server never returned, not to see how we liked our meal, not to ask if we needed a drink refill, and not ever to give us our check. I had to go to the bar to get her attention. She asked how we liked our meals. I told her we were extremely disappointed with the food and equally disappointed with the total lack of service, the worst I can remember in decades. This is the only time I can remember when I decided to leave no tip so there was no doubt about our displeasure. Meanwhile, if you can head just south of Centralia, you'll find Lupe's Hot Tamales (1409 S Gold St) on the right (western) side of the road just 1/2 mile, south of the bridge. This outstanding restaurant is like eating in someone's home in Mexico. I dined there tonight, the exact opposite experience of dining at Don Juan's Mexican Kitchen.

Spectacular, authentic Mexican food and ambiance! The specialty dishes are like no other, they even gave us sampler apps of each dish to help decide since we were first time visitors. And don't forget the guacamole. Fantastic drinks as well! The staff are dedicated and so attentive.. This place is a gem, can't wait to return..highly recommend!

  • Crystal K.

This place has THE BEST food around! There is no doubt about that, and that is the reason we keep coming back. Customer service could use an upgrade. Consistently poor and slow service. They admit that the food takes some time, which is not the issue. We regularly receive our order of guac at the same time or after our meal, or some times not until we remind the server we ordered it. When sitting outside sometimes we don't get silverware or napkins until we ask for them after our food was delivered. Mixed drinks are tasty but weak, and they assume you want top shelf liquor. Staff is very nice but could use a refresher on customer service and attentiveness. Also chairs are too high for the table. Important when You have just over eaten and need to relax haha. But like I said, the food is amazing enough to continue to go back despite all this!

  • Jalee R.

We just moved here from the south and are very picky Mexican food eaters. Friends of ours kept recommending that we try it out, but we keep thinking, "Mexican food in Tenino?!" Well, we were not disappointed! The food was amazing, chips and salsa fresh, and to top it off the service was impeccable! We will definitely drive the extra distance to eat here in the future!

  • Michael C.

The food at Don Juan's is truly world class. I have eaten a lot of excellent Mexican food over the years and Don Juan's is exceptionally good! Worth the trip off I-5 or frankly from any distance. But call and make a reservation - the locals know what they've got here.

    (5)
  • Bruce T.

Ole! The food here is emphatically NOT your standard Mexican food. The recipes are unique, the sauces are beautifully spiced and the meats are fork tender. The chile negro is especially praiseworthy as is the Tinga. EDIT 2/7/15: add the special chile relleno (with chorizo) to the list of dishes worth trying here. It comes with a very rich but nuanced cheese sauce. The enchilada plate is likewise very good ordered with chicken as the protein. Service is cheerful and fast and the whole place is immaculately clean. You would be wise to order the house Margarita. It's a splendid cocktail, each one made to order.

A little over 9 miles off the beaten path (from the 5 fwy and from the Great Wolf Lodge's front door step) is the small town of Tenino. Get yourself there soon to try some of the best Mexican food I've tasted in a looooooong time. Hot (as in just taken from the fryer) chips and fresh made, roasted tomato salsa are worth the trip alone. Seriously. And, for a mere $20 before tip, we were served a platter of 6 chicken taquitos served atop a bed of salad greens and drizzled with crema; and 3 shrimp tacos topped with cabbage, pico de gallo, crema, onion and cilantro. Our server also brought us a plate filled with 5 small bowls of house made table sauces/salsas...they varied from a mild cilantro based sauce to fiery habanero. Why, Don Juan, must you live so far from us? The decor is cozy and rustic and the service is pretty close to perfection. There's patio seating out front for those that want to enjoy the sunshine, and although we weren't able to try one, the bar looks equipped to make a mean margarita. Will be looking forward to our next road trip up north!

  • Adrian S.

I was underwhelmed. Right off the bat we were told there would be a 15-20 minute wait. Okay...there are a bunch of empty tables...why the wait? They brought out the standard chips and salsa. The chips didn't seem fresh, but the salsa did. In fact, it tasted like Chevy's salsa. Which is a good thing. Say what you like, but Chevy's throws their chips out if they're one hour old or more. These guys should do the same. Back to the wait, the six-top next to us sat unused with a "reserved" tent on the table for the hour plus that we were there. Maybe the governor was coming to Tenino? I had carne asada, and it was decent. There really wasn't a "wow" factor to this place. Maybe I was hoping for more. I couldn't figure out why they had so many workers there but the service was so slow. The server swooshed by with a "can I get you anything else?" She had to screech to a halt when I said yes. While I was waiting I was very tempted to go down to La Tarasca. Both the food and service there are better. All in all, this place was okay.

Completely underwhelmed Came again, not by choice. Worse than the first visit. We were the second table dining at lunch. It was around 11:30. We both ordered nachos. I got chicken again. My friend also got nachos, steak. It took upwards of 20 minutes to receive our meals. We are the only people in here! I think the other diner was waiting for her party. How does it take this long to make nachos? WTF? The nachos sucked. Seriously bland. The chicken used is mostly dark meat and tasted super gamey. Yuck No salsa came with it. No japs on it. Just blah This place isn't good. It's overpriced and I would have never returned except my friend wanted to go. She even commented that it wasn't as good as before.

  • Val C.

Heard good things - was not disappointed. Let them know if you're a first time visitor - they will bring you a little sampler dish of the flavored sauces from their main entrees. I could have just eaten those with a basket of chips for dipping!! I got the 'Mole' (Deep, dark, delicious sauce on chicken) Menu says it has 30 ingredients! My friends told me it even has a hint of chocolate which I have to admit I did notice after they mentioned it. Added bonus - found out an acquaintance of mine owns this place! PS: Best Flan ever!

  • Pam P.

I thought it was overpriced. Chicken taquitos were homemade and fresh but it was bland. They need to taste and season their food before ringing that bell. Service was lacking. Our server was so adamant about "possibly not having whole beans" in lieu of refried beans. Come on, it's a Mexican restaurant, of course you have it... Chips and salsa were the best.

This is by far mine and my husband's favorite restaurant. Luckily we live five blocks away! Before Don Juan's we favored Pepper's in downtown Oly for Mexican food. While Pepper's is great!, Don Juan's blows them out of the water with their fresh ingredients, authentic cuisine, and friendly service. They make their sauces and salsas (and probably everything else!) from scratch, and their specials are to-die-for. We went to Don Juan's on their first night open (their soft opening) and admittedly, they had some kinks to work out. But by our second visit there, they had honed their craft. The food is delicious and fresh, and the family that owns it makes you feel like you are their old friends! Especially Juan Sr. He makes it a point to talk to every table and make sure that you are comfortable and that all of your needs are met. Love that guy. We have since become friends with the whole family, and they are just the best people. Such positive, friendly, generous folks. They are a joy to hang out with, and we are so pleased to call them friends. We (my husband and I) even asked them to cater our wedding last June, and they did a fantastic job. Our guests raved about the food! I've tried just about everything on their menu. My favorites are: guacamole (BEST. EVER), the torta, Don Juan's salad, Mexican green salad, the soup, all of the different tacos, green enchiladas, ceviche (if they have it that day, it's a special), hell everything! My husband loves the Tinga and their freshly made Molé sauce. I try to get the special now every time we go in, and it never disappoints. Don Juan's is worth the drive to Tenino! Best Mexican restaurant in Thurston county, hands down (and beyond!). Again, I feel so lucky to live so close!!!

Very good food. We went for our first time on a Sunday evening. When we got there, all tables were full. We ate at the outside bar. Kind of uncomfortable chairs, but the food more than made up for it. Delicious salsa, with a little bite to it. We ordered guacamole and it was fresh, made to order. We look forward to going back.

I would give four and a half stars if I could. The food is absolutely off the charts. The guacamole should be called "avocado chutney" and it's worth the $7 bucks!! Where the dinner was lacking was service. The servers were nice but they were so busy they could not attend to us and my glass went empty multiple times. We also sat for about 5 minutes waiting for tortillas and salsa (the salsa never came).

Service was adequate no above and beyond! We didn't even get offered dessert! Food is decent but very very very pricey. The one staff member was super inappropriately dressed in a tighter than tight mini skirt and fish nets. The other girl was in jeans and a shirt. It was worth a try but I don't think I would come back!

What a GREAT addition to Tenino! This place doesn't have the standard "americanized" mexican fare you're use to, its REAL authentic mexican! The enchillada you order here will definitely differ from the one you would get at Azteca... thank goodness! I ordered steak fajitas. Great flavors! Came with home made tortillas that were fantastic! I loved their chips and salsa too! Very clean establishment! The owner was very friendly, as were the rest of the staff! Great find, definitely worth trying!!!!

Rich and delicious authentic Mexican, we're so lucky to have them here in Tenino. Have visited 20+ times since they opened and have had consistently good service either eating in or as take out. Wonderfully complex home made salsas and sauces that they are quick to offer a taste of prior to making your menu decision! The best chunky guacamole around and unique special margaritas! They've been discovered....so might want to make a reservation on more popular nights. Suzie Winans

Andale andale, arriba arriba! I have no idea what those words mean, but when Speedy Gonzalez spoke them years ago in Looney Tunes cartoons, he was pretty damned excited...essentially how I feel about Don Juan's food, and the prospect of eating there again. Deciding to bypass some of the "fancier" establishments in Olympia for our anniversary dinner, my husband and I settled on Don Juan's simply because of the great Yelp reviews I'd read. The reviews did not disappoint...some of the best Mexican food I've ever had. Now, I'm not one of those Yelpers who says "I KNOW good (insert ethnic food of choice), because I lived in (insert location of choice) for (insert length of time)-I just know when food tastes great, is served in a prompt and friendly manner, and in a nice environment. Don Juan's hit the mark on all of these criteria. If you order the guacamole, be prepared to negotiate portion sizes with whoever you're dining with-it's so good, you could possibly resent them if they get 1/4 ounce more if it than you. Resent FOREVER. My husband ordered the carne asada for his entree, I got the chili verde, and we negotiated over that as well-half of mine for half of his. Both were fantastic, had rich, complex flavors that made me keep eating long after I was full. The rice and beans, which are often fillers at Mexican restaurants, were awesome-honestly, I would make the drive to Tenino just for them alone. The margaritas were solid, not phenomenal, but were prompt on delivery-that's enough for this girl. Prices are quite reasonable, considering the quality and quantity of food-but if you're looking for cheap eats, this isn't the place. It's quite easy to get decent Mexican food in this area, but if you're looking for something truly wonderful, get yourself to Don Juan's...andale arriba!

The twist on traditional Mexican food is amazing. My whole family loves eating here we have never had a dish we didn't enjoy. The fresh made guacamole is delicious and there is no need for chips my daughter eats it by the spoonful!

Fantastic, every time! This family run restaurant stands out well ahead of the rest as one of my favorites across the board for fresh mex in Washington. Quality food, drinks, service, and wonderful hospitality. It can get very busy on the weekends and reservations are a good idea to avoid the wait during prime times. The guacamole is always fresh and fantastic, and definitely give whatever the special of the evening is a look. Don't hesitate to ask for the sauces, they have several fantastic homemade hot sauces to compliment whatever you order.

The best mexican food EVER!! Don't go anywhere else. I had the green chile pork, it melts in your mouth. Delish! Worth the drive to Tenino! The owner is the nicest guy who truly cares about the full experience you have at Don Juan's. They give you a sample platter and are willing to put together whatever you want to accommodate any allergies or in my friend's case, vegetarianism. Go to Don Juan's you won't be disappointed!!

If I could, I'd give it 2.5 stars. The good: The food is generally pretty delicious. The guacamole is fresh and the food always tastes homemade. The bad: The wait for food is beyond ridiculous. I know they have a small kitchen, but it looks like the only way the chefs prepare the food is one ticket at a time. I don't mind waiting. 30-40 minutes for food. I do mind waiting an hour and twenty minutes. The ugly: The service is piss-poor all the way around. If we're stuck waiting over an hour for our food, the server could at least refill beverages, bring more beer , etc. NOT avoid our table. I know it's not the server's fault our food is dragging; she still needs to not ignite us while we wait. Additionally, the owner needs to take some classes on customer service (and I mean that in the nicest way possible). The response to a patron who's hungry and sick of waiting shouldn't be, "too bad, there's nothing I can do." So, if you've got more time than you know what to do with and arrive already full and satiated, check out Don Juan's for some good food.

They wouldn't let us eat on the patio with our three big dogs, so we decided to get take out. After asking for the free chips given to diners (not free for take out) since we had to wait for our plates and cancelling our order for paid chips, things got cold. I asked for a suggestion of where we could picnic, the waitress said take a left a Key Bank. Having never been in the town before, I asked if she could point it out on a map; she refused. Oh, and then our pregnant friend's meal wasn't as she had requested and sent it back. Yeah, we were a bit high maintenance, but no one was in the place and we tried to be very understanding and polite. The food, taking into account we had take-out, was fair. We enjoyed trying the various hot sauces. Homemade chips (free ones were so good we ended up putting the order back in) were crisp and not too greasy. Salsa was good. I got three fish tacos for $12, tiny amount of crunchy breaded fish and fresh veggie toppings. Hubby ordered their signature steak tacos; he liked the avocados on them.

I absolutely loved this place when it opened, because the food was just awesome. However, in recent months, the quality of the food has declined. It was once a treat, but now it's a nightmare. And the service. Even when I call in orders, they take a while to get to me. The straw was the other night. I waited in the lobby for over 15 minutes, without even being asked how many were in my party. Not a wait to get a table, I never even got on the list. At least 15 minutes, and I am not a small person - I'm not that hard to miss. I do not recommend going here if you want good Mexican food (because it's nothing special), or even anything remotely like good service.

I was very excited to try this place! We went right before lunchtime and there were only two other tables occupied aside from ours. It's a cute little restaurant inside but the table we sat at was very sticky as were the menus. I asked for a Pina Colada but the waitress said the bar is closed until 5pm since they aren't busy enough during lunch hours. Bummer!! The guacamole and chips were great but the entrees were "meh". I ordered the fish tacos and the fish was not hot, but barely warm by the time the waitress (who let our food sit in the window for about 7 minutes.. I watched) brought our food to us. The tacos were LOADED with onions like I've never seen. Way too much onion! The waitress never offered us refills on our drinks. It's a bit overpriced, even for a small town restaurant. I'd hate to see the dinner menu prices. Iced Tea + Apple Soda + Fish Tacos + Mulita = $32 :( Maybe we went on an off-day considering all the other positive reviews, so maybe we'll give it another try sometime.

The best Mexican food a girl could ask for! The service was so good and the atmosphere was amazing. The food was just yummy. The margaritas, oh god the margaritas, I died and went to heaven. The best margaritas I have ever had. The bar tender is super hot and nice too. Try the strawberry mango on the rocks, soooooo delish.

This place makes the BEST Mexican food north or south of the border!! Everything is fresh, the service is amazing and their margaritas are to die for. If you like spicy, you must order a side of their jalepeno sauce - there's nothing else like it on the planet. If you haven't been here, clear your schedule and come down. The drive is more than worth it!

Wow! I am so glad we stopped at Don Juan's today. The minute we walked in I knew this was going to be special. First off - holy guacamole! Super fresh ingredients and very tasty. I had the chile verde and was in love with the flavor profile. The restaurant was beautiful and just an overall great place. Friendly service - we got an assortment if the specialty sauces (mole, verde, tinga) which really helped me decide what to order. Oh yeah the flan was killer. I can normally take or leave flan but this flan was very good

    (5)
  • Nicole L.

We waited approximately half an hour to be seated, but I assure you the meal was well worth the wait. Service once we were seated was very good. We were able to try all of their specialty sauces before ordering and they were awesome. If you find yourself here you have to try the guacamole, it puts all the guacamole I've tried before to shame. This place's only fault is that their building is too small to accommodate their popularity.

In the pas 7 months they've upgraded their staff, gotten their liquor license and standardized their food quality. I'm not a tequila fan but their margaritas are so smooth yet strong. You know you're in for a good drink when the bartender starts peeking the mango after you order! Highly recommend this restaurant. Tenino has four restaurants and two of them are Mexican. I live in Tenino but would travel to eat at Don Juan's. The food is delicious and healthier than most Mexican food. The style seems to be from Jalisco and everything is freshly made including their chips and salsa. The Don Juan salad is great and the prices are very reasonable. The only thing that could make it better is the service. As time has passed, the owners are managing less and their serving staff is young. They're fairly attentive but the professionalism has gone down hill and it's common to seem them lounging at a table snacking themselves until your food is ready or you waive your hand to get their attention. It's not awful and won't keep me from going there but it does encourage me to order takeout more than done in.

Seriously need way more stars for this amazing restaurant! Make sure to keep your eyes open or you could miss it especially at dark (no lights on the sign) and believe me you don't want to miss it! The moment you walk through the door you feel like royalty. The host, waitress and owner were so friendly and accommodating. The decor created a calm welcoming atmosphere. If you are new they will bring samples of their sauces so you can select the perfect meal which my husband and I will have to return again and again just to try everything! There are different specials every night. All the food is homemade and fresh - no processed foods here! Definitely order the guacamole - I hate avocados and yet I devoured it! The chips and salsa were to die for! But try not too fill up on them if you can because the chef will delight your palate! Every dish that came out of the kitchen made our mouths water. I had Almond Chicken and my husband had Carna Asada. You MUST go! I guarantee it will be the best experience - your taste buds will thank you! Congratulations to the owners. You will need a larger space very soon! If you want to go on Friday or Saturday night make a reservation.

over the river and through the woods to don juan's we go!! With bunneh's final days in olympia drawing near, she suggested we go to Don Juan's for dinner. this is how the conversation went: bunneh: "what are you doing tonight?" me: nothing bunneh: "want to go to Tenino for dinner? there's this great mexican restaurant that i found." me: "what's tenino?" i found out that Tenino is a small city, that's 20 miles southwest of Olympia. Their downtown is about two blocks and there's an abandoned house that greets you when you enter the city limits. You can see where the downfall of the economy hurt the city but then, you see a beacon of light and a glow.... don juan. hope. this restaurant succeeds where all other mexican restaurants fail. they serve delicious, fresh, perfectly balanced dishes that makes you wondering why you haven't discovered this place before. it's everything you expect mexican food to be, and more. i mean really. their food is just, amazing. and for under $13/person (with leftovers) it's quite a deal. (i had the leftovers for breakfast, and it was even better. my office had the faint aroma of the deliciousness that is don juan and i was sad i didn't have anymore food. the corn tortillas were even better in the morning as their subtle sweetness was a bit more pronounced. mmmmmm.....) by the time we were done with our meal, the restaurant was starting to get really busy. not a single seat was open and a line was starting to form. so make sure you get there early and allow plenty of time to wait, order and eat. families with children, seniors, everyone was eating at don juan, and the owner was going around greeting customers and making sure they're enjoying their meal. what a wonderful dining experience. and i can't wait to go back. (ps. pro tip: ignore the horribly racist drawing of the asian dude on the sign for the chinese restaurant located inside the grocery store. )

AMAZING!! A friend and I went here for lunch today. We ordered the Guacamole, Fish tacos, and flan. OMG! The owner found out it was our first time in, he quickly came over to talk with us. What a nice guy. I ordered the guacamole - I laughed when it came out cause it was the real deal. We had a Mexican exchange student live with my family when I was younger, this is the guacamole he taught us to make. YUMMY...... The fish tacos were wonderful. The homemade chips are the BEST. At the suggestion of the owner we tried the flan! Neither of us are big fans of faun, but we couldn't say no to that nice man. I kid you not it was one of the best things I have ever had...........My friend and I are PICKY. I will go back just for the flan!

My friend, who is a 5-star chef in Seattle, and I went here for dinner. Her meal was really good. Mine was so salty, I could not eat much. I added sour cream, and then had her try it. The sweet waitress apologized and took it off the bill. I told her not to because I had eaten almost half with help, but she said no. She likes people to come back! The 5-stars are for this proper action, kind waitresses, and a good marguerita.

Want authentic ethnic home style Mexican food? Go to Don Juan's. Now this is off the beaten path. Located in the small town of Tenino South of Tumwater on the old original Highway 99 (main line before I-5). Great décor. Small restaurant owned and run by a local family you will NOT be disappointed. The food is fresh, made to order on site. It is NOT pre assembled and frozen. The Don Juan tacos are especially delicious and the refritos are not better anywhere. The rice is flavorful and one can tell immediately it's freshly made. Mulitas are from the owner's local town in Mexico and equally delicious. Definitely a go to place when puzzled on what and where to eat. It is NOT fat laden and greasy. It IS simple and delicious, with original layers of flavor from properly spiced ingredients. The hot sauce plate just rocks. What a range of flavors and spice levels. This one is absolutely "on the list".

This is an amazing restaurant, especially if you like non-Americanized Mexican food. Everything was delicious. We started with the amazing guacamole and some chicken taquitos. Both were excellent and the guacamole was the best I have ever had, anywhere. My husband had carne asada and was impressed. I had the chile verde which was delicious. We also had a chicken taco and a beef tongue taco and were not disappointed. The people were friendly, the service was superb, the atmosphere was great and the prices were not bad. Everything is made fresh and to order. On Friday and the weekend you want to have a reservation or being willing to wait quite a while. It is definitely worth the wait. A great addition to Tenino and Thurston County.

Some of the best Mexican food I've had. Service was top notch to boot. I also really liked the fact that the food wasn't on the table 2 minutes after we ordered like most Mexican restaurants. Well worth the trip to Tenino.

So far I've ventured to this newly opened establishment in Tenino twice and I believe it's amazing! The family who runs the place takes great pride in their restaurant and it shows through the food and the service. We've all been to the numerous Americanized Mexican restaurants around the area and this is not at all in the same category. Although it is a bit of a drive from Olympia give them a try and I'm sure you will not leave disappointed.

Great chunky gauc and salsa. Everything made fresh each morning, including the chips! A few original homemade dips (that they are going to start selling jars of), worth going for if you want to try something new and spicy - I'm a new fan of the grilled jalapeño dip. Shrimp tacos with the lime squeezed over was very yummy. I would have blacken the shrimp instead if I were to make it myself at home, but that isn't very authentic and this place deserves credit for treating it like their home kitchen rather than going tex-mex. My coworker said his enchiladas were "pretty good," but we think they were prepped in advance since the chicken was outside the wrap and on top :( I'll recommend it to you and will go back myself.

This is where the locals eat. Fresh and healthy hand made Mexican cuisine with great service. They aim to please. Try the fish tacos, they won't disappoint. Edit: they now have a margarita bar with organic margarita mix, outstanding. Try them with their freshly made guacamole and home made chips.

It was ok, that is all I can say. Service was ok, could have been better if we didn't have to keep asking for drinks and chips and straws. Was disappointed no kids menu, nothing for the baby too do and no children's seats. The food was ok, but not as good as the reviews that are on yelp. I will keep my local place. I was disappointed all around will not go out of my way to return again.

I loved this placed the first time I came here. My second time reconfirmed it for me. The food is excellent and the family run business environment could not be better. They are very friendly and made us feel so welcome. The owner is super nice, funny and very enjoyable to talk with. For what is cost to go to Taco Bell for same old blah, I can eat here and its even closer to home. Authentic Mexican food at its finest. No matter what part of Thurston County your in, its well worth a trip to Tenino for Don Juan's. I plan on being a repeat customer and look forward to experiencing the rest of the menu.

I wanted to give this restaurant 4 stars for the location and ambiance but then decided that it didnt matter; the food here was impeccable in its appearance and taste. Truly authentic. I usually base the quality of a Mexican restaurant by their tamales and/or chile rellenos, but opted for the Tinga instead; great dish. The owner walked around to each table to ask how everthing was and it felt as though we had known each other for years, great guy. Will most certainly be returning, and I will recommend this restaurant to all of my friends.

Simply the best Mexican food in Western Washington. The food was outstanding, fresh and authentic. The service was impeccable and the atmosphere was friendly. This was our first visit and we will certainly be back soon. My only regret is that we didn't try the guacamole. Once I saw the couple next to us get their order I was instantly jealous.

This is some of the best Mexican food I've had in Washington. Absolutely delicious and much more authentic than most places around here. The owner was really nice and when he learned it was our first time, he ran off and came back with samples of his sauces. The chili verde and chili negro were my favorite, but the tinga was awesome, too. Try the guacamole. For now, they have beer and wine, but they have applied for a liquor license and should soon be able to serve drinks.

We'd heard about this place from a friend with fantastic taste so gave it a try. She was right again! Like another poster said, the owner brought a tray of sample sauces for their authentic dishes, and we're so glad he did! My husband had the pork with negra sauce, and he completely cleaned his plate! I had the chicken tinga, which was also fantastic. We never would have ordered these dishes without the samples. The chips, tortillas, salsa, and guacamole are all fresh and homemade; so much better than the normal pre-fab stuff. The $7 we paid for the huge bowl of guac was well worth it. They serve soda, wine, and beer. A margarita would have been nice, but the food was so good it didn't matter. We both ate so much because it was too good to leave any on the plate. Service was fantastic. We were greeted the second we walked in the door and were seated right away. It was getting crowded by the time we left. A couple folks came in and picked up to-go orders. Based on other posts and the dinner we had, I'm sad we didn't have room to try the dessert. We will definitely be back to try more from the menu!

We walked up unknowing just after closing, but they invited us in even though it meant a limited menu. Folks, it was awesome! The guacamole is to die for and a very unique kind. Actually, all of the food is unique and seems to include a lot of old family favorites - some dishes I've never heard of before and I frequently eat at Mexican restaurants. Believe it or not, this little place is totally worth the drive out to Tenino if you are looking for some authentic Mexican cooking. Very high quality food including locally made FRESH corn tortillas. Everything made from scratch. Again, make the drive out there - it is worth it! PS - it is in the same parking lot as the grocery store if you are having trouble finding it.

My husband and I were on our way to Vancouver and wanted to stop for lunch. We found this place on Yelp based on other reviews. 12 miles east of I-5... what the heck, but oh well. Super clean, great staff and the fajitas, chips and guacamole all homemade. We've already talked about coming back for dinner someday. If I could only convince them to relocate to Everett! Without question, the best Mexican food I have had!

I have visited this place twice. The food was very good--hot & fresh both times. Not a huge fan of the salsa (too watery) however the guacamole is fantastic! The inside is very nice--I love the decor!! The first time I visited they were playing classic rock :( disappointed as I love to hear the traditional Mexican music which they had playing the second visit :) The servers were a bit loud on both visits--Very nice & friendly, but loud. Prices are normal/average. If you're in the area, I would recommend giving them a try.

After hearing a few friends and my brother rave about how good Don Juan's was, I had to try it. I went in with very high expectations and I was not let down even a little. Right from the get-go I was impressed. The owner greeted our party at the door and was very friendly. Fortunately we showed up and it wasn't very busy as I have heard that it is quite rare for that to happen. Our waitress was also very friendly and we were seated immediately. We were given menu's and told about the specials. I noticed they had coke made with cane sugar (much better than high fructose corn syrup). Everyone in our party was able to find something they wanted. My brother had highly recommended the fish tacos. I was not so sure as I had never thought they sounded good. As a result I ordered a three taco plate with two steak and one chicken taco. I ordered one fish taco just so I could say I tried it. What a mistake! Don't get me wrong the regular tacos were fantastic but the fish taco was absolutely amazing. I have gone again since then and had the good sense to get the three fish tacos from the menu. Everything was really good. Nobody in my party had anything negative to say about our visit. It was very reasonably priced and the portions were really generous. At the end of our visit Juan came over to make sure we had enjoyed our meals. He also gave us his card and advised us to call ahead to insure we would have a table as they get really busy. I am positive I will be eating there frequently. I can't believe I almost left out anything about the guacamole! By far the best guacamole I have ever eaten. It is not like the stuff you buy in the store at all. It has pretty simple ingredients but the thing that separates it is that rather than mash up the avocado they cut it into chunks. I couldn't stop eating it. One of the best dining experiences I have had. If you even just kinda like Mexican food give this place a try.

What a wonderful restaurant. Beautifully decorated by the loving hands of the family that owns it. I had the chicken fajita and my sweetie had the beef. You could tell that all the ingrediens were fresh and the flavors all complimented each other. The owner brought us out an assortment of "salsas", but they were more like a sauce. So yummy!! Definately worth the drive to Tenino to check out this little gem if you are hungry for some authentic Mexican food. They make you feel like you are guests at their home. And definately try the guac...best I ever had.

Wow! We finally got ourselves over to Tenino for dinner last night at Don Juan's. I've been hearing about this place and the reviews on Yelp sealed the decision to drive on I5 on a busy Friday night. We were not disappointed. This family-owned business obviously takes great pride in their product, their restaurant and their customer service. The food selection is fairly standard---but the preparation is outstanding. Someone in the kitchen knows how to create the real moles and salsas---we had a sampling (4 each) to try with the freshly hand-made chips and dinner. I was hungry so I ordered the carne asada and hubby had their enchiladas. I ate WAY too many chips because I just couldn't get enough of the sauces. We've been to 'mole-land' in Oaxaca, Mexico and know how good these can be---and this restaurants offerings would stand up to the best Oaxacan restaurants. If you live nearby and like quality Mexican food--you have to try this one.

Don Juan's Mexican Kitchen is new in Tenino. We needed a good restaurant (There hasn't been any at all until now) and this is fantastic. Prices reasonable for food, wine and beer. (they will have a liquor license for hard alcohol soon so then margarita time!) Their appetizers were really really good. We had chicken soft tacos and were amazed at the experience. The taste was so fresh and each flavor stood out and then the mix was amazing. We shared a dinner after that, plenty of food with leftovers. Delicious! 5 stars for the service. The servers are friendly and attentive and the new owner makes sure to come over and ask how things are going. We are so lucky they decided to locate in our small town. They remodeled a small portion of the strip mall area by the grocery store. They did a fantastic job. The inside small lit up bar area where they fix the drinks is very attractive and you can see into the immaculate kitchen area where the staff are busy concocting the deliciousness you have in just a few minutes after taking your order. It was busy when we were there, but we didn't wait hardly at all for service or food or drinks. I love the outdoor seating area which will be great when the sun finally decides to shine, maybe sometime in July. We will be back and will be bringing our friends. I told my coworkers and one of them brought her boyfriend and they loved it too! Tell everyone, we want to keep Don Juan's going in Tenino. That way we don't have to eat at the other "who shall not be named" heinous Mexican food place down the street with it's terrible surly service, poor food, and dirty floors. And never mind the burger place either, yuck and more yuck. Definitely this place is the best we have so go eat there, and enjoy!!!

We had heard that this restaurant had the best mexican food in Washington state, and having recently moved up from Texas we decided to give it a try. Every dish was fantastic, from the handmade chips, to the fresh guacamole, to the outstanding flan. They also had some unusual treats, like a little sample plate of different hot sauces they had made. When we were there they hadn't gotten their liquor license yet, so they improvised our drinks with white wine and even sake, with fabulous results. Everybody in our group (which included several extremely talented cooks) was blown away by every part of the meal, and we can't wait to go again!

The atmosphere is wonderful. The servers are super cute and sweet girls! The owners came and chatted with my husband and I which in turn made us feel special. And the food......oh wow...the guac is OUTSTANDING and worth the $5.99 (great portion for two and down right delish!). I had the tacos and my husband had the chile relleno. Both plates were awesome. The special salsas that came with the tacos were created by The Mrs. Don Juan and were uniquely delicious. I would recommend this place regardless of their lack of margaritas or sangrias. They are not opened on Mondays but I can't wait to take my mom and friends!

The food and service was amazing. It is clear that mama knows what she is doing. I love that they offered us tastings of their specials before we ordered. We had the Tinga (spelling?) and the Chile Verde as well as the fresh guacamole and the flan. Everything was fresh and delicious. It is a family owned establishment and the pride is evident. We drove an hour to try it and were not disappointed. We will be back.
