Absolutely horrible. I cannot believe people give this place a good review. Grocery store sushi is by far better than this garbage. Almost every roll is based on a generic pre-made shrimp tempura and tastes the same. Everything we had was carelessly put together. If you like quality sushi this isn't the place. We took a guest here from out of town and it was embarrassing.

Did someone say ALL YOU CAN EAT! of course I had to check this place out after moving here. The sushi was delicious and the sushi masters were on their game. They were cranking those rolls out as soon as we were done. I was trying to pace myself but I found a few that were great. Advice: Look at the menu ahead of time and come in with a game plan. Be prepared to sit at the bar area. Try to get there early as the bar does fill up and for good reason.

What is there not love about this place?! Its good food and great specials! We often go on Mondays for the 3 rolls for 20! Amazing deal! We go at least once a month! Highly recommend!

I do enjoy trappers because of their daily deals. Their all you can eat lunch special is hard to beat. Taste and everything is better then many other places. I'm pretty sure there are places that tastes better for they probably charge more too. I give this place 3.5 stars. Almost a 4.

I've been here a handful of times and have had a pleasant experience. I always do the "all you can eat" special and I'm not disappointed. They have a lot of rolls to choose from and most of the sashimi is spot on. I would like higher quality ingredients used and have them not rely so heavily on sauces. Rice needs work too.

So terribly disappointed. First off, It was freezing in the restaurant. Second: the service was not good - inattentive at best . Lastly, the food was expensive - the portions small - and don't tell me it's all about the quality of the fish because there was more rice than anything in the rolls that we ordered. This will not be a restaurant that I will not return to - EVER - and with the tip that I left it's probably a good thing. My dinner companion and I took advantage of the 3 rolls for $25 special (which really isn't that good of a deal - the rolls we ordered came to $26) and ordered Gyoza as an appetizer. I would have ordered some miso soup - but they were out and wouldn't have anymore until tomorrow. It was only 6:00pm in the evening - I'm thinking there might have been a run on miso soup that day. That should have been my first clue that this wasn't going to be a satisfying dining experience. The Gyoza arrived - over cooked and I think we were at the tail end of the deep fat fryer oil rotation - the oil had a funny flavor. But I'm here for the sushi - so I didn't let that worry me. The 3 rolls arrived - miniscule portions. They were "ok" - for the price that we paid I was expecting something way beyond the rolls I could get at the supermarket or even at Blue C Sushi. They were comparable at best. Because we were still hungry we hit a local teriyaki place on the way home - we spent a small fortune there - but we got what we wanted (they had miso soup) and the gyoza were perfectly cooked.

sigh. From the food at this establishment that insists on calling itself a "sushi restaurant", I received chronic diarrhea and terrible stomach aches for a week. The rice was barely cooked and the seafood was the farthest thing from fresh. Also, the quantity given was paltry to say the least. This is Tacoma, damn it. Having so many abundant resources for fresh fish shouldn't make it very hard to get some quality food. Also, the people making these rolls barely have any idea of what real sushi is supposed to look or taste like. I was very disappointed with everything from the food to the cleanliness of the place. Our waitress treated us with such scorn when we had only just sat down, so we weren't very comfortable in the freezing icebox of a restaurant to begin with. I highly recommend NOT going here, because I definitely won't be back any time soon.

Was there on Monday. Got a very bad case of food poisoning. I would not send my worst enemy to go here. Horrible food. DON'T EAT HERE.

Huge selection of rolls, great to eat there or as takeout. Can't wait to try the all you can eat menu! Staff is super friendly and knows how to make great sushi

I have been going to Trappers since they day they opened in Bonney Lake, and always leave satisfied with their all you can eat dinner. I always take my boyfriend here on "Cheat" day and we hang around for about 2 hours just eating roll after roll. The staff is always nice and friendly, be prepared to wait a while if you are going to the all you can eat since you have to sit at the bar.

  • Jared P.

Sort of disorganized and could use some paint on the walls. The wait staff struggled with our order but ultimately got it right. Food was decent and the beer mug was frosted. We still like going to trappers in Puyallap more but this ones decent enough.

  • Lauren T.

Love this place! The sushi is reasonably priced and so delicious. I get the Bonney Lake roll every time, and usually try something new, too. On Mondays, they do 3 rolls for $30, so my sister and I frequent this place. It's always relatively quick, I've never had to wait more than a couple minutes to be seated, and the prices are definitely reasonable.

My boyfriend and I had dinner here a few nights ago. Since I have quite a few food allergies, the chefs were very nice about making my sushi to my needs. Everyone was super friendly and the food was great. Have to try the Trump. YUMMY!!!!!

I think it's a good place. I prefer more traditional sushi rolls but it is not bad. The flavors were really good. The sushi bar staff seemed really friendly.

Terrible experience. Slow and inattentive service. Teriyaki beef tastes spoiled. Sushi was mediocre at best. WAY OVERPRICED!!!

Came on Sunday with a friend. Fairly busy. Service was much better. Waitress staff attentive. Food out in less then 15 minutes. Sushi wad very good. M as on issue in past was the service

  • Jarett B.

Because my favorite teriyaki spot in Tacoma was closed this Sunday and I was craving Teriyaki I went to Trapper's because their sushi isn't so bad. I called for take-out of half beef, half chicken spicy teriyaki. Didn't ask what the price was. Assumed it would be more than $10 and less than $15 and a large amount. Boy, was I wrong! Not only was it so light weight that I was still hungry afterwards, it cost $20+! It wasn't prepared spicy and was just sorry looking. Small scoop of rice and the chicken was simply boiled breast that want even cut through. I had to finish cutting it myself. Then add Serachi for flavor. Thoroughly disappointed.

  • Eek M.

For an americanized sushi- Not bad- The prices are decent/comparable to other places. and they do have real crab meat if you request it(last time I was there they did) Rice-to be honest could be better, and it wouldn't take much to make it better. They did mess up an order once- and they made it and gave me the correct order. They are in a small building that tends to get packed so it is sometimes better to order out.

    (3)
  • Charles G.

Always good and different flavors of sushi here, the wait can be long for the bar seething so maybe call ahead.

  • Corinne M.

What a huge turn around from just a few weeks ago! Everything was so much better this time around! The rice didn't taste funny, and it was actually cooked all of the way this time, and whoever made our rolls this time, knew what they were doing, because I loved every single thing we ate, and if we were not in a hurry, I would have ordered more this time. I guess there are always kinks to be worked out when opening a new business, or we just came on an off day last time, I'm not sure the reason, why our experience was not so good last time, but by far there has been drastic changes. The only suggestion that I would make is for them to KEEP the bathroom door closed, it's such a small restaurant, that no one wants to see/smell the bathroom, just shut the door, please! I was definitely satisfied, and I hope that they keep doing whatever it was that they did today, because it was just right.

After getting the lunch all you can eat I could finally appreciate the art of sushi. Multiple plates of delicious options with scallops, jalapeños, and raw salmon with a great atmosphere of fun employees and good music. At one point the sushi chef and I were singing together as one, it was an exciting and very delicious $20 luncheon.

  • Nicholas P.

Good all you can eat price. Between my girlfriend and i we eat about 10 rolls. Service is really slow though and they have been having bad service the last three times we have been there. They used to be really good but it seems worse each time. Kinda sad. We use to love it here. Lots of the good chefs have left

Either some of the reviewers are new to sushi or they have pretty low expectations. If you are looking for fast food or grocery store sushi you have come to the right place. By that standard it is a 3 or 4 star in terms of quality. If you are familiar with Todai Sushi, this is similar in quality. McDonald's like. Consistent but unremarkable. If you are truly looking for an upscale fresh "cutting edge" place, this is not the place for you. You will be disappointed.

Precut ingredients, no presentation... Fish tastes farm fed. If you want real sushi, go to Miyabi.

    (1)
  • Brian C.

Decent sushi... but the manager completely missed the concept of bar seating. Over an hour to sit at the bar, while there are open single seats, waiting to be filled by couples and triples... AT THE BAR. While I was waiting, I saw at least 4 singles leave... bad business policy. I will not return to such a poorly run business.

How do these guys not have 5 stars straight across?? First of all they have fantastic daily specials! And their sushi is beyond magnificent! We were on the way to catch a plane and always stop here before we go to the airport. We were running late, told them and they sat us right away and got us our drinks fast and ordered super quick! The sushi was out in ten minutes tops and it looked amazing and tasted even better. These guys pushed us ahead and busted their butts on a busy night to take care of us. Best customer service ever and amazing sushi. Thanks guys, we really appreciate it! You're all awesome!

Horrible service. Walked in and waited to put our name on the list. Very clearly there was a wait - the lobby was full of people. Instead of asking our name, the waitress yelled at us to take a seat and wait (not kidding about the yelling). Would have left right then except for we love the BJ Shea morning show & are never down south (STP raves about this place). So, we waited and watched a bunch of empty tables sit. Finally we were seated. We got the STP (delicious, pretty big, not too spicy), the Trump (incredible, $15, warm - probably the best roll), the Puyallup (disappointing, small, not as creamy as I'd hoped) and the Rainbow (horrible). Yikes, some of the worst tuna I've ever had. The miso soup came wayyyyyy late, was cold & flavorless. Worst miso I've ever had for $2.50 a bowl. CRAZY. Food came out quickly. Wouldn't return b/c bad service & underwhelming food (esp for the price).

Trapper's gets a second star because they are friendly, fast, and not too expensive. The quality of food would be one star. I've had better sushi from the supermarket. The rice is overcooked, the fish is anything but fresh, and everything is either slathered in tempura batter or drowned in a gross, creamy sauce. The rolls are also poorly rolled and fall apart when picking them up with chopsticks.

    (2)
  • Andrew P.

the worst sushi ive ever had. I came because I noticed it was all you can eat. I am from los angeles where sushi is always all you can eat, everywhere. first off anything u order off their all u can eat menu doesnt have anytning in it. its a rolled up shrimp tempura, topped with stuff. lots of rice in the roll...maybe like 70% rice. adding to that, the sushi menu was repetitive. for example, 20 items on the list 5 of them are rolled up shrimp tempura with 1. tuna on top, 2. salmon, 3. scallop....etc. so in the end ur just esting the same thing.

    (1)
  • Eileen M.

The food way Great but the fact that they had only 1 server on a Saturday with about 30 customers in the lobby was a bummer, I would give it 5* if they were adequately staffed!

    (3)
  • Jeanene H.

Sushi of course was great! Ordered a combo and didn't get the soup until half way done with our dinner. I wish I could give it a better star because we love the sushi so much, but I felt bad for the waitress. Day before thanksgiving and there were only 2 servers to help and clean the table and of course it's packed!

    (3)
  • Alyssa W.

The sushi was once again delicious and they have some really good servers here, we've had great experiences with 3 of them!

  • Sarath C.

Very bad customer service. We were seated and ignored the entire time. We left after waiting without ordering. This is the second time and last time we will go to Trappers at this location.

    (1)
  • Kevin R.

Overpriced. Way too much rice. They're sushi definitely tastes great but there is better quality for the same price in the puget sound area. All you can eat is the only thing worth while since their new happy hour is a joke compared to what it once was.

Love to see new sushi restaurants opening up in the Tacoma area! It gives us more options and less crowding, we hope to think this, when we are on the verge of a major sushi craving.... yeah for a Trapper's on 6th Ave! The best way to review Trapper's is that this is not, I repeat NOT the traditional sushi establishment! I remember my first visit to the South Hill location and had I not been this location would have had me question what I just entered as well. This location is also quite small, loud blaring music as well and bartender and waitress type staff, not the traditional sushi chefs you would see as most traditional Japanese sushi restaurants. Service was A-ok, we were famished and watched as the our sushi sat on the counter as the they place all 4 rolls on 1 large plate. The last roll took a good 5 minutes, which seemed like 20 minutes since we were hungry, to join the plate before our waitress brought us our food, weird? Nothing special and nothing out of the ordinary... just another Trapper's located in Tacoma on 6th Ave.

    (3)
  • Brittany I.

All-you-can-eat is going to be your best bet but don't go in expecting high-quality fish. With such an extensive menu, a large majority of their rolls focus on the extra "pizzazz" like adding fancy sauces or toppings instead of highlighting the beauty of the fish itself. Not very authentic but not the worst sushi I've ever had either.

    (2)
  • Chelsea Laine H.

Surprised to see so many reviews saying the service was bad...we have been twice and that wasn't our experience; we had different servers each time. They have always been very friendly and attentive...super nice ladies!!! The Rainbow roll was super good with very fresh fish, the Willis roll has a little crunch without being heavy, Volcano Roll was really good but perhaps a little too rich...honestly its just a good solid place with a lot of variety. Edammame seems likes it microwaved though?!?! Cant wait to go back!

  • Tom C.

Never been in before and heard it was kind of like production line sushi. I missed lunch and wanted a quick snack so stopped in. Nice and friendly staff but I don't think there is an actual sushi chef in there. Don't think I'd go in again. Rice was not good at all and this is an important sushi ingredient. Miso soup was just OK. Cucumber salad was not OK. Sushi had OK fish but the rice just ruined that. I got a mountain roll and thought that when they said it had crab on top they were talking real crab and not pollock or fake crab. That made the roll pretty gross and the tempura shrimp inside were cold as they had been sitting out in a tray on the counter.

A-mazing sushi! Just sat down at the 6th ave location for all you can eat which is $26 and had an appetizer, nigiri and two rolls and I'm stuffed. This was my third time here and it has once again outshone sushi all around. If you like tempura the Puyallup roll is a must! For vegetarians or people looking for a more fresh sushi option sans fish the veggie roll is delicious. So crisp and flavorful! Great selection of beer as well. I highly recommend this place. Loren the sushi chef is hilarious and makes some delicious sushi.

  • Jeremy J.

I have to agree with many of these reviews. Horrible service, and not just "understaffing" issues. Long waits, sticky table, and hard to get servers' attention. The hot sake came out much earlier than the food, so any I had left was cold by the time the actual sushi was served. We ordered a Tempura appedtizer, no utensils of any kind nor napkins came with it. We tried to wave somebody down, but after 5 minutes stood up and go to the bar area to get somebody. Still took some effort to get someone's attention. When the sushi rolls were finally served, they were served without any of the soy sauce dishes. Again, 5 min trying to wave somebody down, then more time standing near the bar. The worst part is we could see the servers near the back, talking amungst themselves. Not really "overwhelmed" just inattentive. Honestly, we almost left a few times the service was so bad. If my fiance wasn't starving, we would have. It gets a 2nd star only because the food wasn't awful. It was decent sushi. Not amazing for the price. Definitely overpriced for the service. Will take some convincing to try again.

My husband and have been twice now - once when it first opened and tonight. Both times the service was sub par. Not rude, but definitely not trained, or even supervised. (There's a lot of confusion about who can do what between them.) Example - We were seated about 10min before happy hour ended and the hostess and waitress talked to each other (dropping f bombs) while we waited to get out order in. After so much hype from friends who love the Puyallup location, this place is a bitter disappointment. We won't be back. If you go, don't go for the ambience or service. Go for quick, decently priced, although generic, rolls during happy hour. I'd highly recommend going to Fujiya downtown instead. Soooo much better!!!!

  • Sandy N.

As most folks noted we all want 6th Ave to continue to grow. We are new here and didn't know about all you can eat bar until I read yelp reviews. Not sure why we were not told about that. When I hit up a new sushi place I start with my standard fare, rainbow roll and spicy tuna hand roll. Fell well below expectations.

    (3)
  • Ali W.

This place is amazing! They have incredible sushi at an affordable price - all you can eat is the only way to go. The sushi chefs are so friendly and personable plus they aren't what you expect from normal sushi chefs. Management is great only thing is that their servers are SLOWWWW and seem like chickens with their heads cut off - so eat at the bar without a doubt. IF YOU LIKE SUSHI EAT HERE - trust me, I'm a foody.

My husband and I are longtime regulars at trappers so much so that we've lived in Oregon for almost a year and a good half of the staff still knows us and our order. We decided to stop in on our way back to Oregon and get the usual. Does this look like a roll you would eat? Our rolls were all rice and no meat. I never send food back, but this time I did. This is the replacement roll made by the MANAGER! This is what the manager thinks is an acceptable roll to send out. The entire thing fell apart as you can see. What happened trappers?

    (2)
  • John C.

I ordered as take out, a New York sushi roll. The portions are a JOKE. 85% of the diameter is rice. 15% is fish and veggies; mostly veggies. Seriously, how much is the capitalized cost of a sushi roll, a dollar? Other places literally give you rolls that are twice as big and have more fish. Shame on you Trappers!

    (1)
  • Najin K.

The sushi was bomb, a bit over priced but the day I went there was a great deal of three rolls for 25 dollars. I normally don't like rolls but these rolls were creative and delicious, the service was good too.

Oh dear. This is a quantity not quality nor authentic sushi restaurant. Cream cheese has no business being anywhere near sushi. Ugh. Did not enjoy this meal and we would never go back. My mother is Japanese, this place just isn't our cup of tea.

One of my favorite Sushi places to eat. Yeah it's Americanized but still an awesome place. Though it's a little pricey but I still get what I ask for!

Waitresses are rude and grouchy, especially when you're picking up your order. Giving three stars only because the sushi is decent.

I went to Trapper's Sushi last night for my mom's birthday. When we first walked in this place was packed. We were sat at a table right away. My mom and I ordered two sushi combos and my girlfriend had the chicken teriyaki. We waited a bit for the food and the owner/manager had gave us a free appetizer because we had been sitting for awhile. The food was good. My girlfriend didn't care for her chicken Teriyaki. The chicken looked pre cut, no sear marks, and was luke warm. The GrEaT thing about our visit was the staff was really attentive and nice. The only problem I had was our server never told us about the daily special. Our combos came out to be $20.00 a person and the special was 20.00 for 3 long sushi rolls. Enough to feed two people. I will give this place one more try and see if my experience is any better.

When we first went to the Puyallup location I defended the sushi to my husband (not real sushi, he insists). Yes, their sashimi is cut super thick so you have to take each piece in two bites and their fish isn't a high quality grade. But I always appreciated the vegetarian options and cooked rolls when pregnant so every so often we deal. Last night I NEEDED some wasabi and soy and so we went. And honestly even I can't defend this sushi anymore. They've seriously changed the scallops they put on top of the Mt. Rainier and Trapper rolls and it tasted like it had canned tuna in it as a filler (wish I was exaggerating). The seaweed was super chewy also- these have never been issues before. I also literally ran into the busboy with a pan of soapy water on my way into the bathroom which just speaks to the odd use of space in the building. Another couple left while we were there after not getting served promptly. Tacoma needs a good sushi restaurant!

Trappers is terrible. 1. Hostess does not inform you at the door the lunch happenings. (All you can eat at the bar only and happy hour starting at 3) 2. One guy eating at the bar (eating the all you can eat lunch special) had three small kids with him taking up prime spots for actual paying customers. We all know those three small kids under 5 are not paying $17.95 for AYCE sushi. Wait staff needs to make clear to customers and to make room for the 10 waiting for a bar seat. 3. Took over 25 minutes for the waitress to let us know that they just started on our rolls and that they had to get more supplies. 4. When we brought up to our waitress about wanting the AYCE but not being sat at the bar, she just showed us what rolls were available but didn't offer to match special. 5. Shrimp was still visibly raw in Bonney Lake roll. And cold. Not a good cold. 6. Waitstaff never checked on us or refills drinks, they were too interested in watching the television. Will not be returning. Ever.

Went for lunch today and had THE best sushi and service. It was recommended to us, so we weren't sure what we would find...we went for the lunch special - all-you-can-eat sushi for $15.95. We hit it just right because it was $20 for any and all rolls - Tuesday and Thursday only - not just the normal "lunch special" rolls. We each had 4 rolls each (there were 4 of us) and were all over the board on what we ordered. Each roll was delish! Not sure what our favorite was...they were all that good. To get the specials, you have to sit at the sushi bar. We went after the lunch rush and only had to wait a few minutes for 4 spots to open up. I can say nothing about the carry out service or regular menu items. The sushi we had was all very good. And the value was amazing... I can see how the other reviewers felt, but Trapper's hasn't been open in this location for long (not even a month) and they might still be working out some of the kinks.

So my husband comes here for sushi at least once every other week... He brought me 2 times the quality of sushi was amazing fresh delicious... My favorite roll is the Barackade... My husbands is the trump and the Samantha... My only complaint would be that if you go for happy hour which we went both times and request the trump and Samantha they try not to give you 25% off (which is happy hour) even though it doesn't exclude those... Waitress said those aren't included and when we asked where it said that she said On the sign which it didn't There is no fine print except no $1 off tea... The waitress was rude after that we got no thank you she just walked away and gave attitude... Which we spent 100 bucks we deserve at least a thank you for coming and apology... SO CHECK YOUR RECEIPT when coming!!!

I would say this is sushi for beginners as the rolls are smothered in sauce and you don't get the fresh taste of good sushi. Would not dine here again.

I love sushi and really wanted this to be the be all end all. Alas, it's not. Ok, the food isn't bad, not particularly authentic for those of us who have eaten in Japan, but not bad. Very imaginative rolls, very messy to eat, and not at all what you'd get in Japan but still tasty. However, their service is horrible. We of course got there right at lunch time so it was busy. Only had to wait a few minutes although the server wanted to put us at a tiny little table about a foot behind the sushi bar and we said no thanks. That said, she seated us but didn't give us any menus. I ended up walking over and getting us a couple. It's pretty large, lots of items and not organized in any way shape or form. The server finally came to ask about drinks, we said tea please and she said they were out of mugs. I mean really. So we had water and she said she'd bring us tea when they had glasses. I kept asking and finally she brought us some. My friend and I split a sampler of long rolls and it was supposed to come with rice, had to ask twice for that. Then when she finally brought our tea half way through the meal, she graciously said she wouldn't charge us for it. Since when do you pay for tea at a Japanese restaurant? I gave this three stars which might have been generous. I sincerely hope that the powers that be read Yelp and recognize that without improving their service they won't last. We might go back but Gari of Sushi is better.

Trapper's is my new favorite sushi restaurant in Tacoma. The all you can eat sushi deals are amazing, the selection is incredible, the chefs are entertaining, the quality is solid (yes, I've had more posh sushi, but many of such places don't have nearly the variety, which makes them less desirable for frequent visits--Trapper's to me is the "Cheers" of sushi restaurants). If I had anything to complain about it would be that it can be hard to get a seat at the sushi bar because it is always packed, I wish they served hard liquor, but they do have good sake. The ultra-white LED bulbs are my personal favorite, but you can nit-pick any place to death. See you there!

Worst Trapper's Sushi ever. I have been to their other locations, and this one needs to get some serious help with training, from which rolls to plating them to customer service. Our rolls were all slopped onto short plates with zero presentation, nor customer service from the sushi guy behind the bar, he was more interested in talking to the waitresses than making our orders, and he pawned them off to the other sushi guys. Needs help or it'll be a flash in the pan. I'll stick to the other great locations.

Very disappointed. I won't be back. My bf and I ate here many times over the last year and really enjoyed their sushi. The last time we went, we brought 2 friends to have all you can eat sushi for lunch, where you're supposed to sit at the counter on bar stools in order to have all you can eat. However, my friend is visibly 8 months pregnant and would not have been comfortable sitting without back support. We asked the manager to allow us to sit at a table (the restaurant was dead) and still receive the deal. My pregnant friend was not going to have sushi, so the manager said she could sit at a table while the rest of us sat at the counter. They were not willing to accommodate a very pregnant woman. They were unwilling to make any allowances. The manager was curt and we felt they did not want our business. We left and went somewhere else. I would have understood if the restaurant were busy, or if we had to order at the counter and take it to our table. What if someone were in a wheelchair? Would they also have to eat at the counter?

Best sushi I have found in t town. All you can eat saves tons of money if your hungry and want premium rolls. I had no problem getting a spot at the bar at 8 pm on a Saturday. I really want to know where the people who give bad reviews usually go in Tacoma for sushi because it must come with happy endings

The food is outstanding! The service is friendly and prompt, without being intrusive. The disco blaring over the speakers has got to go.

Great place to eat lunch for the all you can eat sushi, especially for the great price of $15.95 which is an excellent value for the quality sushi you are getting!

Walked in and wasn't told about if you sit at the bar it was all you could eat for $17.95. Was sat at a table and ordered. It took forever! Everyone around us was getting their orders but us. Then the waitress came over and said they had to prepare something in the back. We wondered what that was. When we finally got our rolls we asked why weren't we told about the bar special? She didnt give a reason and just said next time these are the options for all u can eat. Great! Our order came to $40 and the food was horrible. We didnt eat it and was never given refills on our water. The wait staff was too busy watching the Olympics. Horrible service and food. Save your money!

One word, AMAZING! I've been to plenty of sushi places in Seattle and Tacoma but Trappers blew every single place out of the water! My friends & I decided to come in because we heard a lot of good things about this place. For it being our first time here we weren't sure about which rolls to get. Lauren, our server was very helpful and suggested her favorite rolls off of the happy hour and we went ahead with her choices. I am very pleased and recommend this place for all my sushi lovers!

I wanted to love this place, as we sorely need more food options on 6th Ave. Great location & they have a parking lot! We went in for lunch on the weekend. I had perused the online menu, & the items looked great. Jotted down some stuff I wanted to try. But upon arrival, we were informed that there was an all-you-can-eat for $16. Since 2 of the rolls I wanted to try was $10-12/each, we decided to pig out on the AYCE. First 2 rolls (the Mountain & some other?) were nearly identical except for the stuff piled on top. Large rolls w/ seafood on top of the rolled rice w/ more seafood loosely piled on top of that w/ sauce. They were both good & only slightly underseasoned. Then it went downhill quickly. I don't know if the rice batch was different or if the mounds of seafood & sauce disguised the rice in the first 2 rolls, but the rice in every subsequent roll (about 4 others) was mush. Rice is the MOST important part of sushi. Screw the fish & the seaweed. It's the RICE! I read previous reviews about underdone/crunchy rice. I really hope Trapper's Sushi improves. The rest of the dining experience was solid. Minus 2 stars for the rice. 5 stars for our waitress - she was a sweetheart! 4 stars for variety 3-4 stars for value (if the sushi had been better)

Ive been going to Trappers since the Sushi Town days in bonney lake, ive visted almost all of their locations and continue to go out of my way to have a good sushi roll... I live downtown tacoma and when i saw that one had opened in town i had to pay a visit. To begin i really wish that they would stop with the industrial LED lights look.. I am an interior designer and the place feels like a trip to lowes decorated by a straight man and it even feels like sitting in a man cave. .. Anyway.. I just wish they would warm up the place a little and loose the cheesy decor..its a small space and it os not being used well. There are plenty of rich modern options without it feeling like a garage. Ok.. We got there and the place was packed.. As usual and i never mind waiting... But i do mind being totally ignored by all of the servers who kept walking by and not making an attempt to seat anybody... Most of the people waiting were waiting for the bar for the all you can eat deal... I just wanted a table for 2 and there was 3 open spots. . Plus 2 tables that were ready to check out and they both had to ask for their check. Finaly got a seat after waving down a server.. And after we sat it took a good 10 minutes before we were greated or ordered drinks.. I looked arround me and one of the sushi chefs was standing in the drink area sipping on a soda, just watching everyone in rush hour.. Finally we get a cute little server. . We knew what we wanted to order and our rolls took at least 20 minutes to come out.. A table behind ua got a free appetizer for their wait and we got nothing.. Hmm.. The sushi cheff guy is still sipping on his drink probably enjoying a break at a very bad time.. It was prime dinner time.. The people that were waiting for bar seats were forced to wait longer because the servers would take forever to get checks to people and clearing counters quickly to get people seatted... The counter sat with dirty dishes for as long as we ate.. And people were waiting to sit there, anyway am not going to go more into it because i was very disapointed but bottom line is the staff at Tacoma sucks and they cant keep up or just dont know how to handle busy times... Tacoma is a big foodie town and they are BRUTAL about bad dinning experiences.. I hope Trapper can step it up here

My wife and I ate at Trapper's Sushi for the first time tonight. It did not disappoint. The quality of the sushi was high, the rolls were creative (which I always appreciate), and the service was outstanding. When trying a new sushi joint, I typically can tell from a few staples whether I'll be back. Staples like sake, maguro, and a spider roll (for example) typically reveal whether the fish used is of high quality or not. If you can't do these basics right, I'm not coming back. At Trapper's, each of these was excellent. I especially liked the sake, which had a slightly thicker cut to it than most sushi restaurants (making it a substantial piece of nigiri). The spider roll was excellent too - well proportioned throughout with softshell crab. Too often, spider rolls have a few legs in the end piece and just a thin amount through the rest of the roll. Not at Trapper's. The softshell crab was plentiful in each piece of sushi, and each end piece was substantial (a larger than typical allotment of crab). On the quality side of the menu, my wife and I were well pleased. We enjoyed Trapper's creativity, too. While I enjoy classic sushi fare, too (like what you'd find at Sushi Tama, or Nishino's, in Seattle), I enjoy the modern approach to sushi too (think Two Koi in Tacoma, or Mashiko's in West Seattle). Trapper's menu had sushi options that were novel and interesting. My favorite tonight was the Barackade ("garlic cilantro sauce, white onion, avocado & crystal shrimp rolled in french fried onions covered with seared albacore, ponzu sauce & Japanese pepper" ~description from the Trapper's menu). The albacore on top was seared perfectly and just about melted in our mouths. Together with the shrimp, this roll was both creative and delicious. The other rolls we tried, the Puyallup (salmon, avocado & cream cheese fried in tempura topped with a special sauce & green onion) and the Jimmy Crunch (yellowtail, cream cheese & cucumber fried in tempura with hot sauce & green onion) were also flavorful. The Puyallup's tempura batter was perfect - not too heavy and a good crisp. Our service tonight was top-notch, too. We arrived around 6:30 or so (on a Saturday) and were seated promptly. Our server, Lauren, was patient with us as we examined the menu thoroughly, and was knowledgeable when we had questions. Over the course of the meal, she checked on us a handful of times (at least 3-5 times) and was always friendly. My wife's water was refilled often, as was my Coke. When we finished and wanted to order a fourth roll (the spider roll), she got our order in quick and we were served promptly. When we were done, our total came to $55 or so (including tax), which was cheaper than comparable sushi. We can likely get a slightly cheaper meal at Gari, but would've paid more at Two Koi and other sushi joints. For what we ordered, $55 was a steal. I'm also glad I didn't read some of these reviews until after eating here. Though I can't dismiss others' experiences, I can say that if you're going to a new sushi joint at a peak time, waiting is common. Trapper's is a cozy restaurant and space is limited. Given their awesome specials (that I'm excited to take advantage of), e.g. $20 all you can eat dinner on Tuesdays, it's no wonder it's busy. Busy is good. It means people like the food. I'm always leery of restaurants that are empty. I love sushi. Trapper's will definitely join our list of "go-to" sushi restaurants. I highly recommend.

Have eaten here many times and have generally liked it. Sometimes service is slow when packed. The sashimi is good. The rolls are creative and the all you can eat is a great deal. I have had better sushi presentations when compared to other Sushi places but overall a very good value.

How can restaurant owners/managers be so clueless? My daughter and went there on a Saturday night. The place was almost deserted because it was near closing and we were seated near the ladies room. The waitstaff seemed to not notice that I had a full view of the toilet during the whole meal. Suggestion: Make sure that door is almost closed when not in use. The music was on really loud and the waitstaff were all speaking in loud voices to each other. It was as relaxing as a bus station. Since we entered close to closing time, we were rushed to finish ordering. When we wanted to order another item at about 9:30, we were told the kitchen was closed. I will not be going back.

I had hoped to give a better review to this place but at this time I can't....Why? Because I never got to try the food here. The first time I tried to go for the all you can eat lunch. There were five of us we walked in saw one man waiting and we were told its 30 Minutes no 40 minutes to wait this man was here first with his party of six. We waited for 10 minuets the rest of the party of 6 walked in and the manager greeted them then said it's going to be 40 minuets for you. Then said to them you are first motioned to us and said they are last. Wow that made us feel wanted NOT!! We walked out giving up on the idea of all you can eat sushi there. I did not give up though I did come back this time alone and for dinner. I walked in the place was busy I was going to try to eat there or at least order two long rolls to go. I could not get to the little unattended Podium because the little waiting area was packed. I was willing to wait I saw three servers each one stopped at the podium each one very busy they smiled they looked at me made eye contact but never greeted me. Two groups of people waiting walked out because of the wait I took a seat. Still not even able to talk to anyone about a getting a table or a to go order. I took a menu from the podium saw what I wanted put it back. I kept looking at the busy servers waiting to be greeted they smiled but nothing. Another 5 minuets go by a new couple walk in and they were greeted on the spot would you like a table a server said. I was crushed I did not want to be rude and say I was here first help me greet me ask me if I want a table. So I walked for the 2nd time and as two parties of people did before me. I called up the Corporate office and left message telling them of my Experience the lone woman trying to get a seat in the restaurant asking them to please at least have the busy staff to great people. I really wish they had a host they are still new and will be busy for a while it would help out there customer service and not piss off any potential customers. I still want to try the food here some day because I was a customer of Trapper's long before he had his own chain of sushi restaurants. His days at Oasis sushi bar at Muckleshoot. The long roll that has his name is very good. After his employment at Muckleshoot ended they kept his long roll for a wile, it went down hill with out him then they really should have had the decency to drop the roll off the menu. Anyway once again I had hoped to give a better review but at this time I can't all I can do is say don't go there if you don't have much time. And if you do go be aggressive so you get a table.

I called at 10:30am for a pick up order of 12pm. The lady that answered the phone said that I would have to call back at 11:30 as she would "forget" to put the order in. I called back at 11;30 and put my order in. My coworker and I arrived at the restaurant a little after noon. Our food was "almost ready". When we arrived back to our workplace, the chicken teriyaki was dry with no teriyaki sauce. They could not give us our miso soup as their containers would "melt" because the soup is so hot. The cucumber salad that came with the teriyaki meal leaked all over the place as the girl did not place the salads in the bag properly. The sushi rolls were average (cut very thin). When I called to question about the teriyaki chicken, the girl simply explained "Oh, we forgot". No apology, no compensation....NO CUSTOMER SERVICE! I do not recommend this location to eat at.

Just checked out Tacoma's newest sushi restaurant and was very happy. Got 3 rolls for $20 which was plenty for my fiancé and I. We told them it was our first time at Trappers so they brought us a sample plate with 6 pieces to try. Beer is a little pricier then expected, but acceptable. Will definitely be back!

THE ABSOLUTE WORST! We came in on a Wednesday night and were seated at a table. There was no way we could eat enough for the all you can eat to be worth it, but I do agree that not offering it at a table just a few feet away from the packed sushi bar is kind of ridiculous. Our server (i think his name was Mason?), was kind of a box of rocks. I could tell he might have had good intentions, but I could also tell we were one of his last tables and he couldn't give a rats ass what kind of service we got from him. I ordered 2 vegetarian rolls because I am allergic to shellfish, I almost never eat sushi because of this, but I was with a group of 4 other people who wanted it, so i made it work. I explained my allergy and asked him if I would be safe ordering off the vegetarian menu (if you are vegetarian you want to know that your food isn't touching meat or that they are using clean knives, right?), well, Mason acted like it was such a big deal for the sushi chef to clean his area and knife before making my sushi. I explained to him that i just couldn't have my food touch any shrimp or lobster.. he had my rolls made in a cleaned area, and then had them tempura fried in the same oil as the shrimp.. then he came over and asked me if that was okay, i said, well probably not, but he mentioned that they were already made like i was the one being the pain in the ass.. I asked if it would be a problem to order these rolls with my allergies, and if it was, he simply could have given me a more safe suggestion (i would have just ordered teriyaki or soup!). We waited about 30 minutes to get our sushi delivered to the table.. it took FOREVER. My sister's friend ordered the 3 rolls for $20, but didn't order her third roll until about 5 min after our food was delivered.. At that time my sister ordered 3 more rolls for the kids because they were starving.. we waited about 25 minutes (we were the only table, BTW).. and no food ever came, in fact, our server was sitting at the table behind us STUFFING HIS FACE! While we were still hungry and waiting on our food (with 2 kids who were going crazy and waiting for the rest of their dinner).. He sent another waiter over and talked at us from his table from across the room. Mason told us from his table, while eating that the kitchen had "lost the ticket" for our order.. We cancelled it and they did give us my sister's friend's 3rd roll for free (which didn't really matter because with the 3/$20, it was nearly free anyways!). We had to leave trapper's and go elsewhere to get the kids a full dinner... that should NEVER happen. And this entire situation wasted 2 hours and $70. NEVER. AGAIN.

Uh, no way. Well, the monster roll we had was good, however, I had to laugh when we walked in and the hostess/waitress? which appears to be a dual title there, asked us if we wanted to sit at the sushi bar or a table. I was confused. There was not one seat available at the sushi bar so what was she thinking? Anyway, to make matters worse, you can only get "all you can eat" while sitting at the bar and it was not going to happen. So, while sitting inches from the sushi bar at "a table" we got to watch the lucky people enjoy all you can eat while we sat at the unlucky table and had to pay double for the same thing...ha! I just thought it was ridiculous. I'm glad there are other good places to eat. The whole place is so non-traditional. It's not my kind of place to go to for sushi. We ordered one roll, and some sake while planning our escape. Went to The Matador and had a great time.

A small, fun place to go for sushi on Sixth Ave. You can sit at the bar for all-you-can-eat and interact with the guys preparing your rolls for you. Nothing fancy, but it's a good lunch spot and the prices are right.

Tried out the new location to see how it compares to Bonney Lake and Puyallup. I did the all you can eat lunch and was very satisfied. Staff was friendly and the restaurant is clean with plenty of parking.

I don't see how you could rate this place any higher than a 2 star. The food is mediocre, service sketchy, and the ambiance is gross. This place, known for its giant rolls and hip take on sushi is lack luster and flavorless. I had the monster roll and for something with so much going for it it fails to deliver. The food is a small part of why I disliked it so much here. The restaurant is small, painted an ice cold blue and decorated to match. With no booths to sit at you are forced to be seated at wobbly tables with small rickity chairs, the tables are all very close to each other as well. In an empty restaurant with plenty of seating we were sat at our table and then a coupld was sat at the table directly beside us, we could have shared a plate of food with them. Another greivance is that they have lined their walls with huge tv's, why? This isn't a sports bar and you certainly do not have comfortable seating or enough room for a crowd to gather to watch a game. Also, they tried too hard to be hip and printed these God awful menu's. I think that this place is a lunch time spot, they have a $20 all you can eat special on Tues and Thurs I think and for that price I would return. I wouldn't go back for dinner or without the special. You can get much more authentic, flavor packed sushi at Sushi Tama further down 6th Ave. Trapper's Sushi comes off as trying too hard, they cant decide whether they are a Japanese restaurant, sports bar or a hip hang out for the UPS kids. Rest assured they aren't any of the above.

Was in the mood for teriyaki for lunch so decided to give Trapper's a try. I have heard lots of great things about Trappers but this was my first experience. We ordered two orders of chicken teriyaki to go and it was very disappointing. Very small portions, the teriyaki sauce was light, watery and not very flavorful. The chicken was dry, they use breast meat and I am not sure how they cooked it but I don't think it was grilled, I could be wrong but it was just not good. It came with what I think was supposed to be a bit of salad, one small piece of lettuce and a tablespoon of shredded cabbage dressed with water. Maybe it was just garnish, I am not sure. Over all very disappointed. Maybe the sushi is better and teriyaki is just not their thing.

One of the better sushi options in Tacoma. Interesting, creative, and tasty roll options. Reasonably priced with fast, friendly service. I will definitely be back to try more items on the menu. Atmosphere is slightly synthetic and I was chilly the entire time, but those are minor complaints. Overall a great choice for sushi in the area.

We came in on a Tuesday night at about 5pm. We chose the bar for the $20 all you can eat. Wow! Even though there was a chef on break Lauren hooked us up as quick as he could with some amazing sushi! He apologized for not giving us more attention even though he was having conversation as he was making rolls for other patrons. While we were there the clientele doubled and there ended up being a line at the door waiting for a seat, no because the host(who jumped in to help the chef) was busy, but because there were no seats available. The wait was short though because the chefs were making those rolls as fast as everyone could eat them. For only being open for SIX days this place was recommended to us by three people!(we live north of Seattle but were in town for a concert) Over all the food was great, the service was great and the price was great! Only missing one star because it didn't beat out my favorite sushi to date with rare steak on top, which I've only found in Vegas. We will be back the next time we are in town!

My wife and I went to the Tacoma Trapper's Sushi twice last week. We really enjoyed our meals. We'd read all the Yelp reviews before setting out, and steeled ourselves for a long wait, rude, disorganized or apathetic servers, lousy decor and layout, and lots of background noise. But we've experienced all that at some of the better regarded restaurants in T-Town. What we cared about was well-prepared, fresh sushi rolls, nigiri, and sashimi. That's what we got, and for about the same price (or better) than the two conveyor belt sushi places in town, and certainly better than the teriyaki joints. After a reasonable 10 minute wait on a Sunday evening, and zero wait-time for dinner on Tuesday, we sat at the sushi bar both visits. Several staff were on duty both visits, and cheerily greeted us on the second visit. On the first trip we didn't order the all-you-can-eat (we eat in moderation, so it's too spendy on Sunday unless you bring your kids-eat-free kids). We were told by the sushi bar chef working closest to us that he was supposed to focus on the all-you-can-eaters, but he wasn't rude about it, just stating his role behind the bar. He gladly attended to us between visits from the waitress, who was supposed to focus on the tables. I ordered a combo dinner at the bar (bad form, I know, but its what I wanted) which comes with miso soup and side salad. We had a wait for my miso soup, so the waitress brought two. I never got the side salad, so the waitress brought complimentary mochi ice cream at the end. My wife had ordered her preferred nigiris and sashimi, and the all-you-can-eat chef helped us both get our orders up even though it wasn't his station, just because he overheard the order. On Tuesday we gorged ourselves on the all you can eat for $20 special. Sashimi's not available for the special, but the nigiri salmon, yellowtail, and other fish toppings were pretty much sashimi sized fillets, so my wife just ditched the rice underneath. The hand rolls were well-stuffed (try the Dragon hand roll), the nigiri pieces were generously sized (big hands on chef Casey), and the long rolls were, indeed, long. The Trapper roll rocks! Bye bye, Two Koi and Fujiya. We found a new home for sushi.
