We hiked up and down Beacon Rock for the great views and now we're hungry for some lunch. We drove into the small town of Stevenson thinking we'd have to eat at Subway but instead found this delightful restaurant! Friendly, good service and nice ambiance. I ordered a salmon salad and honestly, it was the BEST I've ever had. The smoked salmon was perfect and tasty. The rest of the ingredients were fresh and a nice compliment to the salmon. My hubby really enjoyed his pulled pork sandwich but I think my salad was much better. I'd return here for lunch after hiking the trails of the Gorge any day!

Had friendly service both times we've been in. Not too busy either time. Burger was super satisfying. If you find yourself in stevenson, this is probably your best bet, we've tried the other spots in town for food with no success, big river grill gets our vote....

Stopped on our way home from camping for a beer and a burger. I had the Bacon Bleu Cheese burger and beer lunch was AMAZING! The fries were cooked to perfection, my daughter has the I kids burger and agreed it was really good. Great staff and atmosphere. Will deft be back!

We were out in the area on a day trip and this restaurant came recommended by those that know the area. We arrived on a Saturday at 4 pm and were seated quickly. We ordered pints of the Walking Man IPA. This beer was good, a little hoppy which we like, and a mellow bitter note in the finish. Watch this one because it's got a little punch at 7.5% alcohol. We had burgers, the #2 & #3. #2 was a Tillamook chedder, green chilies and smoked bacon. The bacon was super crispy. The #3 featured grilled onion and mushroom with Swiss cheese. Both burgers were excellent, very flavorful and very good quality Angus beef patties. My side was the French fries which were extra crispy with some sort of interest coating, I like them very much. There are two reasons why I am not giving five stars. The first reason is that my companions side, black bean chili, arrived at the table less than room temperature. The second reason for not getting 5 stars is that no one came by our table early into eating, to ask is how things were. We had the flag someone down to let them know the chili was in need of warmth. Heated up it was much better. Even still, the black bean chili was lacking "umami," a fancy way of saying it was missing sometime. Yes, we'd return.

Been here multiple times and always pleased. Good place to grab dinner if staying at skamania lodge.

Decor is themed, serves as entertainment while you wait, as service is a little spotty and everything is slow. Not the friendliest spot, and we were promptly looked at upon entering but neither waitress addressed us for awhile until finally just telling us it's a 15 minute wait... Which they might have said to begin with. Onion soup came luke warm with the cheese not melted, onions not melting either. Salmon in the salad was a little dry and tasted bland, mustard dressing has good flavor though. Dad got the Reuben which was much better. Oozing and melted and hot. Fries were also quite crispy and good. Food overall not bad foodwise. Just be prepared to wait. Good music also saved this review from sinking.

Popped over the bridge to have lunch in Washington after hiking in the gorge. Salmon Caesar, veggie burger, some kids Mac and cheese and tater tots. Super nice service and staff. Food was pleasant. Lenience is kitschy cute; the walls are lined with humorous vanity license plates. You'll do fine popping in here.

Looked forward to breakfast here on Saturday most of the week. It didn't disappoint! The corned beef hash was even better this week. Service was fast and efficient again. Son asked on Friday if we could go here again, always a good sign.

Goat cheese and sun dried tomato appetizer was excellent! Also had the Reuben and it was good. Get the appetizer for sure, you won't regret it!

Good restaurant on the main street. It's a nice bar atmosphere with great food. Our waitress had an attitude, but the food was very good. Good beers too. We found parking on the street.

I literally limped in here this afternoon after a long hike and was very pleased with the service and the food. They brought me a cold beer promptly, refilled my ice water over and over and kept a pleasant attitude. I ate a very delicious BLT on a focaccia with tons of bacon and fresh vegetables. The fries were great. I truly have no complaints and I look forward to coming back again next time I roll through Stevenson.

The "mess of potatoes" was fantastic... Peppers, onions, cheese and lots of crunchy potatoes. Great service, friendly staff.

OK this review is mixed becuase yes the food was amazing. Their homemade salad dressings were to die for but they don't make their own pies just the rest of their desserts. Our waitress was a little slow for my liking and those carpet were disgusting, it makes me wonder what the kitchen looks like.

The place has a casual setting but serves excellent food. The server was quick, responsive and polite. We loved the soup of the day which was African chicken. Salmon cakes were nice and portions were all sized. We also tried garlic prawns and Thai chicken and both dishes were very well prepared. Bacon in garlic shrimp added an excellent flavor to the dish.

Stopped in here twice over the weekend and really enjoyed it both times. Saturday we just came in for a bloody Mary. The mix is awesome. Not to thin, has a nice kick to it, you can tell they use a lot of pepper because it settled at the bottom (yes that is a good thing). Sunday we came in for lunch. I had the reuben with fries. It's a large helping of house cooked corned beef, plenty of sauerkraut and just enough dressing. Great sandwich, good fries, friendly service. Originally we wanted to grab breakfast but they stop serving it at 11am. Being from Portland, I wasn't expecting that so keep it in mind if you are traveling through.

Wife and I stopped by for dinner, place is very casual and the waitresses are really great and engaging. Had the salmon pasta and rib eye steak, they were both really great tasting. I will probably go back again. One of the few experiences where I've enjoyed eating good food and felt comfortable. They have many local brews on tap.

I had the special, a patty melt on Texas toast. Very tasty. But the highlight was a Thai style peanut soup which was an unexpectedly tasty addition to my sandwich.

Very decent restaurant... we're new to southwest wa and were looking for a place to do Mothers Day breakfast... emailed this place on Saturday and the owner replied within a few minutes. Said he expected to be busy and give them a call when we were about 20 minutes out. We did and we got right in upon arrival. Our family of 6 were all very happy with the food. from chocolate chip pancakes to steak and eggs to salmon and bagels and the classic omelettes... everything was very good... maybe my only complaint and its not really a complaint but could be the difference between 4 and 5 stars is the 'mess o spuds' I got had cheese mixed in and the cheese just wasn't very good... in hindsight, I'd rather have them w/o the cheese or maybe they should find a better quality cheese? the server was very good, friendly and kept our table well taken care of... we'll definitely be back to try some of the lunch menu...

Came here because we saw it had raving reviews. I wouldn't say Big River Grill warrants a raving review, but it's definitely worthy of a good review. My husband got the green chili burger and enjoyed it. I got the single decker turkey club sandwich which awesome because it's so hard to find a club sandwich that doesn't have 39834984 layers to it! Service was really good - our waiter was very pleasant and attentive. Simple menu, and reasonable prices. We'd come back here if we go through Stevenson.

Went here a week ago. No wait. Food is fine. Nothing spectacular but tasty all the same. My daughter did rave about the fettuccine. The waitress I was not impressed with. No smile. Short and to the point. Kind of made you feel bad for being there. She reached over the table and put her bare arm pit in my husband's water cup. Ew. Never asked how are good was and if we would like anything else. My glass sat empty most of my meal. I would have liked a refill. Gave us our check. Didn't ask if we wanted desert or anything else. I don't know her name as there's no name tags. Late 30's maybe. Blonde. The hostess with long blonde hair looks 12. She was seriously confused and not knowledgeable with each customer that came in. We sat near the door so heard and saw everything. A few customers actually left because she was so clueless. Pretty expensive for dinner. I don't think I'll be back. The employees at subway a few doors down were nicer and more knowledgeable!

I had an awesome smoked Salmon salad. My party also tasted the Reuben, Pulled Pork Sandwich and Chicken Salad. All of the food was awesome and the portions were generous. I would recommend this to anyone traveling through Portland!

Since I moved to Stevenson, BRG has been my all time favorite. Last weekend the in-laws were in town. This was their first time visiting west of the Rockies. (Outside of Yosemite, could they have picked a better choice?) After a day of waterfalls & fish hatcheries, we needed food and a rest. BRG was picked for a late lunch. The food was GREAT!! The service was good too. I saw that they carried Judge & Jester Ciders, among others. The waitress was very good about sharing her feelings regarding the ciders and the food choices. I really think it the greatest when the service people share and put themselves on the line regarding product, BGR staff truly take pride in what they offer. One of my guests ordered a cider and just did not like it. He decided to ask the waitress to exchange it for a Judge & Jester. This is really inappropriate for customers to do. Nothing wrong with the product, you order it, you pay for it is my rule of engagement. Well he insisted on asking. To my surprise, the waitress took it back!! She cheerfully exchanged it for the Judge & Jester Cherry Cider, which was a big hit. I cannot say enough for an establishment that shows that kind of gracious hosting. GREAT job BRG!!! I definitely encourage everyone visiting the Gorge and passing thru Stevenson, to enjoy the food, service, and the historic ambience of this jewel in the Gorge.

This was a nice stop to make while making a loop around the Gorge. The fish and chips were good - and on their own would be a 3 star dish. The extra star is for their fabulous coleslaw that had some asian flavors in it!

When we discovered the Walking Man Brewpub was closed, we asked about neighborhood recommendations. We were given two, one of which was Big River Grill which had their IPA on tap. The beer was delicious, the ambience was pleasant, the staff friendly, the food arrived swiftly and we enjoyed. My wife had the salmon sandwich and son and I had burgers. All were very good, and the burgers were less than 10$. A pleasant stop along the gorgeous gorge.

Wow! So much better than the restaurant at Skamania Lodge. It's hard to know when reviews are real but let me tell you - this is real. Go to Big River Grill. Order whatever the Chef's special is that night. Bring the leftovers home for lunch. You're welcome.

We have been meaning to come to this local joint for breakfast since they started serving it two years ago. Service is super friendly. The morning bartender is quick with refills and full of lively conversation. Feels like we have known each other for years. The breakfast menu has a few of the expected breakfast offerings along with some creative and fresh spins on classic dishes. The breakfast chef, Andrew, delivers amazing flavors and the comfort of what feels like a home-cooked breakfast. I don't know why we waited so long. Expect to visit regularly!

Prime Rib is excellent, however they ran out of it before 7pm (it was the special). I have been here twice both times the waitress could use some customer service skills or try to be a little happier? Maybe she only likes the locals?

I had a couple of very different experiences with this restaurant, back to back. We were in town for a weekend getaway and visited on a Friday night, ordering the fish and chips and the veggie burger. Both were expertly prepared and served by friendly, attentive staff. We were so impressed that we canceled or dinner reservation for the next night at a nearby fancy lodge and decided to come back to the Big River Grill instead, since the food has been so delicious (wowee, was that salmon chowder incredible!) The next night we returned.... On Valentines Day. We showed up early, knowing that we'd need to wait, and were seated in about 30 minutes. My valentine ordered the Northwest Salmon, and I ordered the Scallop and Prawn Alfredo, deciding to splurge on their pricier items as we were celebrating. I rarely order seafood Alfredo, though it's one of my favorite dishes, because it's easy to mess up. Since they'd excelled the night before, I decided to make this the once-a-year special occasion that I splurged both the menu price and the considerable calories to order my fave. Like, if I were on death row, my last meal request fave. And then the short lived romance with the Big River Grill, still fledging but so full of promise, died right there on the table when I was delivered a plate of spaghetti with a very thin cream sauce and scallops that resembled nothing so much as hockey pucks in their density. My valentine's salmon was also woefully overcooked. But scallops, I understand, are tricky. So we explained the situation to the waitress, who kindly brought the plates back to the kitchen and asked them to try again. The salmon came back improved from Terrible to simply Edible, but the scallops were the same little impossible to chew bits of sadness. Long story with a bottom line: do go, but order the veggie burger or fish and chips. Their foray into more complicated dishes leaves much to be desired.

My partner and I had a wonderful time! We are a Reuben sandwich and dipped it in their tomato basil soup with black bean vegetarian chili on the side! We drank a hot cocoa and a fresh-squeezed lemonade to help ensure against the cold windy Fall day. The food was 5 stars! The service was very pleasant and attentive. 5 stars! The decor was of a rustic fishing village. The ambience was very nice and personable - very easily of a romantic atmosphere! All in all, a great stop!

We went here because it was the best rated restaurant in Stevenson, WA. It was decent but the ratings were a bit too generous. You are better off expecting a roadside bar with decent food than the best Stevenson has to offer. Cons: Tough steak sandwich Flies Divey Ambiance Water refills only upon request Pros: Burgers Fries Humus Plate

Yummy diner food, with NW flair :) Good prices. Friendly efficient staff. Decor is old style tavern, license plates from it looks like all states adorn the walls. Hubby had a delicious Spinach Portobello salad, and I had the Steak Sandwich with fries; which seem twice fried, very good, crispy outside, soft inside, sandwich was delish! Good choices (and prices) for wines by the glass and beer on tap :)

Great food! Our group had a burger, fish and chips, pastas , and everyone was very happy with their food! Service was friendly and efficient! So far best food in town!

  • Marty B.

Atmosphere: Great! Wait staff and service: Very friendly! Food: Insipid Husband and I stopped here for lunch mid-June before launching a backpacking trip. The onion soup tasted like Campbell's consommé with a few onions thrown in, bread and a dry slice of cheese thrown on top that was NOT melted or particularly tasty. The sandwich was sloppily made and not very satisfactory. Such a great location deserves more attention to detail in the kitchen.

Had a chance to eat here after staying at the Skamania Lodge (since their menu was wayyy too overpriced). The Big River Grill was perfect, a little divey small town pub/restaurant. It had a fine selection of beer (I like my Hefeweizen), and also the lunch and dinner specials were unique and not boring. Wife and I got to eat here for both lunch and dinner (lunch on our first night in town and dinner a day later). So even if you are just driving throught Stevenson, WA stop here and grab a bite, well worth it :)

Soooo called to place a to go order. Waited on phone for 5 min. Called again and waitress apologized for forgetting I was on hold AND then proceeded for me to wait further, only for another man to answer the phone to say AGAIN to hold, claiming that they "just got slammed". If you have the time to answer the phone and play tag w it then u have the time to take a god damn order.

I'm wondering what the high reviews are for, food sure but all but one waitress has been nothing short of rude and mediocre. A customer shouldn't have to ask twice for something and a child's juice shouldn't come after the food... And when you are asking your customers if they want something else don't lean all over their table.. We didn't get a refill for our drink until after our meal was completed mind you my glass was empty when my food came.... Still waiting for the check or to be asked if their is anything else. It's been 15 mins since our food has been done. They get three stars for the food and the one bubbly waitress out of the three oh and our main waitress trashed our sons foo without asking if we were done and treated us like we were just a nuisance. After being on the road all day I really Hope this isn't how all stevensons people act and treat people.

  • Zagreus A.

Pretty decent for the price point, small casual, full menu, wine and beer. Ribeye, pork chops, salmon and chicken all good. I find the mash too rustic for my taste, which runs to the creamy... Vegetables served less than piping hot which shouldn't matter at a diner. Deserts pretty good too. This is not a gourmet joint, it's a local bar and grill with a full price menu they deliver on.

Always love stopping by here for lunch during a nice drive up the gorge or a hike or just a scenic drive. The local beers they serve are delicious. The food is mouth watering grill food; actually delicious bar and grill food. And they staff here are really friendly and laid back. The ambience here is laid back as well so dont feel bad what youre wearing or how you look like . Definite plus that it is walking distance to the water.

Fantastic and friendly Service! The food is absolutely wonderful!! Very fresh and flavorful.. I can't say enough about the atmosphere, it's very warm and inviting , you are welcomed right when you walk in. They have the most delicious Artichoke dip I've ever tasted, I highly recommend it.. The fresh Salmon cakes are divine , crunchy outside and moist inside . The fish and chips hit the spot! Lightly coated and fried to crunchy yumminess ;) Everything my husband and I have tried so far has not disappointed ! Great value and excellent service! Gotta try it Y'all!!!!

I am going to ad to the 100 plus reviews of this place. All I can say is amazing. Carla and stayed at Carson hot springs for a unique relaxing weekend. On the way out we stopped at BRG. The breakfast is amazing. Fresh made and sooooo good. We shared a half order of the biscuits and gravy and corned beef and hash. Both delicious. I want to mention that for 1 hour every morning they have all you can eat biscuits and gravy between 8am and 9am. You can also sub the corned beef for sturgeon. Might try that next time. I wish we had stopped here yesterday for two breakfasts in a row. Yummy

Had breakfast here recently when I was back in the area and it was fantastic. I had the de-lish breakfast sandwich (really flavorful sausage patty, fried egg, all kinds of goodies, on foccacia) called "Baby, Please Don't Go." I met an old friend and we lingered talking way too long but the staff did not try to shoo us out (as I guilt-fully expected they would at some point) and just continued to pour water and coffee. I'll always love this place.

Excellent little joint my sister and I stopped at for lunch before we went our separate ways from a weekend get together. Loved the "divey" look, great staff, and diverse menu. We both ordered burgers. Cooked to perfection, big patties, and awesome fries. I had the green pepper burger with bacon, so there was some added juiciness to mine - but that was a good thing. My sis had a local beer that she said was pretty good. Will remember this diner if we're back in the area!

We ended up in Stevenson after passing by the crowds of spring breakers at Charburger in Cascade Locks and Skamania Lodge across the river. We drove into Stevenson pretty much starving, parked the car, and walked across the street to the nearest restaurant which turned out to be the Big River Grill. After a short wait of about ten minutes, we got a table and the server came over to talk about the menu. We both ordered the sockeye salmon burgers. The Mrs. got the sweet potato fries, I got the chowder. The server was friendly and prompt with drink refills while being unobtrusive. I like that! Our meals arrived and we enjoyed our salmon burgers. Juicy, tasty, fresh fixin's in there, Very good job. My chowder was tasty, and I "borrowed" one of my wife's fries- side dish goodness. The server recommended the blackberry cheesecake so we gave it a spin on the fork. Melt in your mouth, lots of berry flavor, and that slight tartness I love in a cheesecake. We'd never heard of the place. We picked it only because it was across the street from where we parked our car. But we'll be back soon. This is a great little spot.

Excellent!!! Driving through on a Sunday morning and decided to stop for breakfast. So glad we did! Are server John was awesome and recommended the Bloody Mary to drink. I have to say I am a huge Bloody Mary fan and this was the best one I have had. I decided to try something different for breakfast and I got the corned beef hash. The corned beef was so flavorful and delicious. My fiance Paul got the meatloaf for breakfast and it was one of the best meatloafs I've had. But the best part was that delicious brown gravy that I got a side of to dip my toast. This is a must try place and will not disappoint. Definitely will have to try again for lunch or dinner.

Love this place, friendly staff, huge tasty meals, excellent craft beer selection. Their French fries are delicious! Nice touches to make dishes a little different, too, like Asian slaw with the fish and chips, and homemade aioli.

Each trip through or near the area requires at least one meal from here. Our last stop on a Sunday evening was so great that we took extras to our room for the night and stopped the next afternoon for pie to eat on our way home. Great quality, flavor and family love is in each bite.

I ordered the Thai Chicken Breast entree; It was delicious. My wife ordered the Salmon with veggi's; It was amazing! You could tell by the color and the taste of the salmon that they use a fresh products everyday. Kudos to the chefs, they plate with finesse. Check out the pictures I posted on their yelp page.

just ate here for the first time today and was so disappointed! The reviews make this place sound like the food is so good and it's really just ok. Will not go out of my way to eat here again as we did today. Like I said food is ok, but not worth driving 50 minutes for.

It's interesting to me when Yelp reviewers will give a mediocre place an extra star just for being in a small town with few other options. Often it's the kind of place that would fail quickly if it existed in a bigger market with true competition. But somehow since they don't have to compete they can slide by on their mediocrity, and for this they get an extra star--as if the reviewer is simply grateful that there is Mexican food, or pizza, or whatever, in the tiny town they happen across. I don't get it. But I will say that I disagree with this practice, which is why this is a two star review rather than a three star. This is where I go after a hike in the Gorge that finishes before Walking Man Brewery is open (before 4:00 PM). I've been here many times. I can say that if you want food at a place that has beer, this is probably your best option in Stevenson (until Walking Man opens). The virtue of this place is that it's got some decent taps. They also have a full bar, although I ordered a martini here once (it was listed as a specialty on their cocktails menu) that was pretty awful. I asked for it with a twist and got olives with a micro-sliver of lemon rind as well. And it was warm. The menu is pretty limited. They have burgers, a regular black bean chili offering, some salads, and some other sandwiches. The burgers are a pretty good choice. They're respectable. I've had the salmon burger and found it really dry. Today I had a chipotle chicken sandwich, which had absolutely no chipotle on it whatsoever. Even with pepper jack and jalapenos it was pretty uninspired. The black bean chili is okay, but also a bit boring. Service is kind of hit or miss. The space itself is really nice. There's a giant sturgeon painting on the back wall, and license plates from various places across the country. It's warm and cozy on a cold rainy day. But all-in-all, in a town with more offerings, I don't think I'd ever come here. The food is just not that good.

We came across Big River Grill completely by chance when looking for a place for lunch while traveling through the Columbia Gorge. Having no expectations, we were extremely pleased with what we encountered. We were greeted and seated promptly, and it was less than a minute before the server approached us. The service was equally prompt throughout our visit, each course arriving just as the first was finishing. We started with a smoked-salmon salad (shared between two), complete with cranberries, hazelnuts and bleu cheese, and it was frankly delicious (the bleu cheese dressing complemented it perfectly). I had the daily special, a salmon chowder bread bowl, and my wife had a burger upon discovering that they offer gluten-free buns. Both were exemplary, and I can't think of a single criticism. The service was very friendly, and we left feeling full and happy. An excellent dining experience.

This place is part of why we love Stevenson! They really integrate local foods with unique menu choices that are already palette pleasers. Their burgers are magical and a local beer tastes especially good after a long hike.

First of all, it never ceases to amaze me the so-called reviewers that try so hard to find a reason to criticize and give a low mark. For the Big River Grill, it's the hipster hikers (or, is that hiker hipsters?) that think they know food (and drink) and desperately pass their opinions on as the gospel, but in the end fail miserably. Having got that out of my system, I highly recommend the Big River Grill, especially for lunch and, in particular, breakfast. We were staying at the Skamania Lodge, and to kill some time before check-in, we decided to have lunch at the Big River Grill. It was a great choice, albeit, there isn't a lot to choose from in the small town of Stevenson. The lunch was very good, and we wanted to come back for next day's breakfast. As it turned out, everyone's breakfast was delicious, the price was reasonable, and the service was friendly and efficient. In fact, we decided to return the next morning, the day we were to leave town, and the breakfast was equally great. There's really no reason to eat breakfast at the Skamania Lodge, as it was overpriced (as is all of their meals) and I'm sure it wasn't any better than this place. We all decided it would be fun to return to the Stevenson area sometime later this year, to explore more of the region, and to have more meals again at the Big River Grill.

Not much can touch BRG in the Stevenson area. Fantastic, stick-to-your-ribs fare. I was especially happy to see they had a house made veggie patty that turned out to be very good. Nice selection of local beers and friendly staff. Give it a shot if you are in the area and you won't be disappointed.

Sometimes a friend and I get itchy to get out of Portland and take a road trip up into the Columbia Gorge. When we stay on the beaten path, we end up going to the Big River Grill, which is always casual and relaxed, and a truly wonderful dinner always awaits. We usually start with their sturgeon spread, which is just so good that I want to lick the plate when I'm done because I don't want to miss one morsel of goodness. They also make some of the best chicken piccatta that I've had anywhere. Service is friendly yet professional. The decor is great - the walls are hung with all sorts of bits and pieces of memorabilia - and keeps you entertained while you wait for drinks and dinner to be served. Really a restaurant worth the trip, whether you're itchy to get out of Portland or just cruising on through.

Went hiking with my friend Sunday afternoon at Dog Mountain and I made her stop here on the way back to Portlannd. I had heard about this place before but had never gotten the opportunity to eat. We were starving after our hike and the delightful server kept our water glasses full and brought the food out as fast as she could. We had the sundried tomato torta (oh my goodness... heaven) and the salmon sandwich (heaven squared) with sweet potato fries. I barely remember eating my half of the salmon sandwich it was so good, but I do remember it being a thick cut of fish perfectly cooked. When we couldn't finish the torta, she brought out a to-go container and extra bread. I love that woman. and the food she served was amazing. I would love to go there again.

The atmosphere was nice. Wait staff was friendly. Went downhill from there. I ordered a salmon salad. It took quit a while for it to arrive. The salmon was raw. Waitress took it back and they started all over again. My husband was polite and waited for me to receive my new salad. Once again it took a long time, receive a half hearted apology and by then his food was cold. My salad tasted just ok with the ultra sweet dressing on top. Glad I gave it a quick taste test before pouring too much on my salad. My husband said the men's restroom was horrible. I decided to wait for the motel and not test the women's.

I usually stop at Walking Man Brewery when in Stevenson. Unfortunately they're often closed, which was the case last Sunday when a friend and I drove through, looking for lunch en route to Portland after a stormy night camping in the Gorge. We almost missed Big River Grill - it sits unobtrusively at the east end of town - but I'm glad we didn't. The atmosphere and decor suggests classic American family dining, the menu is full of comfort-food favorites and the staff is warm and attentive. Unfortunately the food itself was standard: I had the mushroom & swiss burger which was a little overdone and the sweet potato fries which were okay. Their coffee was weak and a little bitter but that didn't stop me from drinking several cups to recover from our wet & windy night camping. I still think they deserve 4 stars - largely thanks to the friendly wait staff and cozy atmosphere - and I look forward to trying other menu items next time I'm on the Washington side of the gorge.

Ahh BRG. So many fond memories...been going there forever it seems. Best place to eat in the Gorge, IMO. I've gone in pretty dressy clothes, and I've gone after a long day's work at the nearby fairgrounds. So don't worry, you will fit in no matter what. I recommend the Goat Cheese Torta (they will bring you more bread if you run out, just ask!), and the Veggie Burger (can be a tad dry but it's great with the Dijon mustard provided). The chili is a little on the spicy side for me. The African Peanut Soup is delicious. Oh, and they have fries now, but I would skip them and stick with either the soup or salads. They brew their own root beer and have good local brews on tap, or so I hear -- I don't drink carbonated bevs, but the water is great! End with the Brownie McGee (or thankfully now the "mini" BMcG) - and get both the chocolate and raspberry. So good!

Went to BRG for a company get-together and I was pleasantly surprised by the good service, great drinks and exceptional food! I had 3 drinks on the menu and they were delicious and unique. We waited a while for food, but our company had rented the place out and we were all served at once (not the fault of the restaurant). When the food came, it was AWESOME quality. I had Pork Adobo with Polenta and it was done perfectly. We also shared a salad that was excellent. Great food! Great drinks! It's totally worth a visit.

Upon the recommendation of some nice folks across the river in Oregon, we decided to hop across said river and check out Big River Grill. Good choice! - Cute -- if you're a tourist like we were, you'll feel "enriched" by the "small town experience" - Great menu with lots of excellent choices - Incredibly fresh, well prepared meals (you can tell with high quality ingredients) - Good selection of beer and wine (especially local/regional stuff) - Excellent service Glad we stopped by!

Start with fresh and healthy dinner salad, with housemade ranch, followed by salmon with mustard dill sauce, little polenta cakes and fresh veggies. Finish with brownie mcgee for desert -- heaven! Be sure to share the brownie mcgee. It is huge. The local beer selection is superb. Nice little local bar and grill, thank goodness there is no TV -- just like the old days!

Amazing food! My husband and I went there on a last minute decision (it was late at night and almost everything was closed in the tiny town). I ordered a baked Italian pasta dish with four different types of cheese, and it was delicious. My husband ordered the baked salmon with mustard dill dip and he loved it, I too loved it. The next day we went back for lunch with our family, after our wedding that was nearby :) The food was even better than the night before! I ordered a chipotle chicken sandwich, and it was the best chicken sandwich I have EVER HAD! The fries were awesome as well. The staff was really friendly too. We live near Seattle and dine at the best of the best. I am so impressed with this place, we are definitely taking the 3 hour trip back to eat at Big River Grill, and go hiking. Now, if only they had a good coffee shop in town...

Big River Grill is a delightful gourmet restaurant in the charming city of Stevenson, Washington. The Big River grill manages to serve gourmet, imaginative dishes while still maintaining it's small town ambiance. The atmosphere here is fantastic. The walls are decorated with good art work, license plates from around the world, and historical photos and artifacts. Service is friendly, attentive, but in no great hurry. While you're waiting for your check to arrive is a great time to study the artifacts on the wall. The lunch menu leans towards burgers and sandwiches. The burgers here are good. Not great but good. In keeping with the river theme an excellent smoked sturgeon spread is offered. The real star of the lunch menu is the salmon sandwich. The dinner menu ranges from Thai peanut chicken to meatloaf. The grilled salmon is outstanding. Big River Grill also offers a great version of spaghetti and meatballs. The homemade meatballs make this dish delicious. Hope you make it to dessert because Big River Grill serves some delicious berry pies a la mode. Two people could easily share a dish of homemade berry pie here. Big River Grill has some excellent Northwest beers on tap including Stevenson's own superb Walking Man Brewery. A walk along Stevenson's water front followed by a visit to Big River Grill is a Columbia River Gorge high beyond comparison!

One of our favorite dinner spots in the Gorge. Love the Sun dried tomato torta with goat cheese, Yum! Also the best meatloaf I have ever had. If they have Manhattan Clam Chowder - gotta have it! Friendly and relaxed, nice after hiking or enjoying the small town of Stevenson.

We stopped in on a rainy Sunday evening, staying in Stevenson. Yeah, the food is really good, the service is fine, they have good beer and wine. It was very cozy without being too close, and the music added to the vibe. Definitely recommended and I would visit BRG again without hesitation.

We stopped by for breakfast on our way up the Gorge. I can see why Big River receives good reviews. My breakfast was great! I had the two eggs with sage sausage links. The best sausage I have had in a long time. Not too greasy with wonderful flavor. The potatoes were cooked to perfection too. Service was very friendly and efficient.

More like two and a half stars. The food was pretty weak. Severely over cooked salmon and some sort of HP infused pork loin. Meh. This place would appear great after an epic day of hiking. Although I'd eat a bag of dirt after a long workout!

Had a very nice meal here with my wife. I had the Salmon Dinner, she had one of their salads. The wait staff varied from mildly curt to reasonably friendly - but they were all very efficient. The food was far better than their prices would indicate and the home-made pie a la mode was a delish conclusion. The place was pleasant - a bit cluttered with nostalgia, but interesting stuff to look at so no complaints there. Overall - a very nice dining experience and a great value. We'll come back when passing through Stevenson again.

We stopped in for lunch on a busy weekday and were seated just about the time a really large table of diners, who seemed to be local business folks, were placing their orders. So that explained why service was a little slow to take our order and for the food to get from the kitchen to our table. But we didn't mind one bit given everyone was so friendly and the food was so good when it arrived. We had a roasted portobello, red pepper and cheese sandwich that came on good ciabatta bread and also black bean soup / chili. Both were so good we ate every bite, which left us too full for dessert. Unfortunate because the desserts looked pretty darned good as they arrived at other tables. Save room! Big River Grill also has a nice, casual and welcoming ambiance. Next time we're in the area we'll definitely eat here again and will probably plan it so we can try the dinner menu.

Walking Man pub was having one of it's odd opening things, so after a long ride on the moto, my buddy and I ended up at BRG. This is probably my third time there and it has never disappointed. Ok, I missed the Garlic fries and Knuckle Dragger beer at Walking Man, but the Hickory Bacon tillamook Burger was delectable......absolutely superb. I never wax rhapsodic about a damn burger, but this was excellent! Service was decent, prices are good. Great meal.

This place holds something special in my heart, so I had to give it a 4. If it wasn't for my first date with my wife I would give it a 3. The best all time appetizer is the Goat Cheese Torta. It has unlimited bread refills too. They have a good selection of local beers, they make there own root beer, and the water doesn't have a weird after taste. Unfortunately they have changed their menu and chef a few times, and my opinion have degraded because of that. They have good food, but it seems to be leading towards a vegetarian menu. If your into that, great for you. :) My wife loves the place. This place can be extremely busy.

Stevenson looks like a little town, but when you eat at the Big River Grill you feel like you never left the city (except for how nice everyone is). The owners also have a Mexican restaurant across the street that was exceptional. Loved the African Peanut Soup when we returned, too!

My husband and I have eaten here only twice, but both times the food was delicious. I don't like super greasy fried foods. When we leave here we are full, and we feel good! Their BLT came on the most amazing home made bread - and the spicy chicken sandwich has real jalapenos without goopy spicy sauces or grease. We eat here each time we are in the neighborhood.

They label themselves 'High End Roadhouse'. I think that is pretty apt. I stop here much more frequently than my hometown would indicate. I am out that way many a weekend laboring up the side of one mountain or another in the never-ending quest to find incredible views in less well known locations. After a long hike, Big River Grill is an absolute perfect place to stop and have a really good meal and a drink. I love how they don't serve french fries. I love that I can splurge and get a decent burger or I can go healthy and get a really good salad (with homemade dressings). If I really felt the burn that day, I might even go for a dessert. Just about everything I have had there has been good. Service is always good. I have never had to wait for a table yet they usually have a decent sized crowd. The only negative is that while okay, their pies could be much, much better. I have been on a mission to find really good pie somewhere within a days drive of Portland and as yet have been unsuccessful. I also sometimes stop there on motorcycle rides and they are definitely motorcycle friendly. There is plenty of parking along Hwy 14 that you can back your bike into. Given the timing of when I make it there, I have never had the opportunity to try their dinner. One day the stars will align and I will give it a shot (cuz it looks damn good).

A few years back a friend told me about this place and how much she loves it. It's about an hour from my house and well worth the drive. I had a baked pasta dish with shrimp. My other half had salmon. I thought both dishes were great. Our server was nice and she didn't bother us too much, just came over when needed, which I appreciate. I loved the wine I had and the selection of beers they offer. They offer a seriously delicious breakfast. I would recommend you give it a try!

Had a delicious steak sandwich, large strips of steak, grilled onions, on toasted bread. Surprised it wasn't overly salted. The black bean chili was great too. Split the sandwich and a dinner salad ($3!). Surprised the meal was quite delicious, service was very prompt. Would recommend stopping here while in the area.

I have never written a bad review before but this place was HORRIBLE. I was on vacation and needed to do laundry so while the laundry was running I thought I'd grab a meal. I say at the bar and it took 15 minutes of bring ignored that I asked for a menu. Food was okay. I just had a salad. Still no one ever asked me if I needed anything. I again had to request a refill. Still had to wait 10 minutes before I had to ask someone again because the first bartender forgot. You definitely have to fend for yourself her. Oh and BTW they weren't even busy!

What a great little place. Very cute decor with old license plates and old newspapers displayed. Lots of booths and tables in the back of the restaurant. I had the hummus plate which was an appetizer, however, very substantial. I ended up taking part of it home. My fellow diner had a reuben sandwich with pasta salad which looked great. The service was great. I would go back again.

Enjoyed our first dinner while in the region. While being led to our table, saw other parents/participants Laser Nationals taking place at the Gorge. The staff was patient while we gabbed in the aisle. Upon finally taking our seat, staff appeared, took our drink order and returned quickly. We enjoyed a starter of Salmon cakes, crispy on the outside, nearly rare on the inside. Very tasty. For dinner we had hamburgers, ranging from the veggie to the very beefy. All prepared perfectly. Wife enjoyed a mushroom soup which was simply marvelous. Son and self had regular fries and sweet fries. Neither my favorite method of preparing/frying, but nevertheless ok. I washed my down with a Full Sail Amber from the tap, which I must say tastes significantly better than the bottle................

The food was great, really friendly service, and a pleasant, casual atmosphere. Tried the salmon burger - amazing (and I don't usually like salmon burgers at all). The mushroom, onion, Swiss burger was incredibly delicious. Bloody Mary was above average, and they had a good selection of microbrews on tap. Great place!

Restaurant had good atmosphere. I had the steak sandwich with sweet potato fries. Was great. My wife had a Ruben with black bean chili. Her food was ok. Said here black bean chili had a bland taste. And Ruben was fair. 3 stars out of 5 because of her food. And being seated then not being helped for about 20 minutes. Waitress was given 3 tables at same time.

Not worth the wait or the price. The service was slow, despite the relatively empty restaurant. It seemed like the entire staff was on break eating their own dinners, while we waited for ours. Overall not the best.

Stopped here after a drive up the river from Portland. Quaint place, with a rural fishing vibe to it. Salmon was moist and tender, good. I had the pulled pork which was very delicious. Not drenched in bbq sauce, which is a nice change. Staff was friendly and overall it was a nice spot to eat. Menu seemed good and the house made root beer was refreshing. Overall a good spot if you are touring or just driving up along the Columbia.

Meatloaf and mashed pototoes w/ veggies very tasty. Pasta premaria very good but pamersian cheese was the size of thge pasta. It needs to be grated or sliced much smaller to better flavor the pasta. Friendly staff.

We had rib eye and the salmon. Both were great. Husband's steak was tender and done perfectly. Decent size portions of both. I had the salmon and it came with rice pilaf, I requested to get a side of the garlic mash potatoes since the rice was kind of dry. They brought out a side of them and didn't charge for them either. We would go back there.

Stopped for a bite on our way home from camping. Pro's: The veggie burger was pretty tasty and the African Peanut Soup was yummy too. Their house Root Beer was OK, I like it a bit creamier. Con's: The waitress was cold and seemed put out when serving us.... she interacted the same way with all of the customers. The ambiance had that quiet uncomfortable feel about it. Probably won't go back the next time we roll through Stevenson.

This place has much going for it, despite a somewhat run-of-the-mill appearance. 1. Good beer selection -- I had a Walking Man IPA made just down the street in Stevenson (WM itself was closed the day I was in town.) 2. Tasty food. It appears that they put some care into how things really taste, if my pork BBQ sandwich with SPICY sauce, my yummy black bean soup, and my mom's unusual salad dressing, were any indication of overall quality. 3. REALLY yummy desserts. We'd just hiked for a few hours, so figured it was okay to treat ourselves to a warm brownie with ice cream and chocolate and raspberry sauce. It was worth any calorie overage... 4. Casual atmosphere. We strolled in wearing slightly dirty hiking duds, but nobody on the staff looked at us askance. Oh, and one more thing: SEXRXRR. What does this mean? Well, if you ask the server at Big River Grill, she'll decipher this California license plate that's hanging on the wall with the dozens of others that decorate the joint. It drove us nuts for 30 minutes before we gave up and just asked. See if you can figure it out...

BRG has the best home-made veggie burgers on the planet. They also have a great ambiance, tons of beer on tap (if that's your thing) and super friendly staff. Check them out after a day of hiking or playing in the snow on your way home. You'll be glad you did.

Good beer selecion and ok food. It was very busy but I was seated fairly quickly. The beer was good, lots of choices. When the food came I was starved and ready to eat. Unfortunately, I wasn't as good as I would have hoped. Next time I pass through I'll try something else.

We stopped in to try it and we are now big fans! The meal was perfect. From the Goat Cheese & Sun Dried Tomato Torta to the Roasted Garlic & Spinach Tortellini. The service was prompt and courteous. I saw all around us many people were enjoying what I must say were great looking burgers. Maybe next time. I do recommend you try this place.

Good food, friendly wait staff, and a nice atmosphere. I was in Stevenson on vacation and stopped in to the restaurant fairly late. Even though the kitchen had closed they let me order dinner. Service was fast and the food was great. I appreciated that they prepared my meal even though the kitchen had already closed, so I went back for dinner the following evening. Same great service and the food was excellent once again. Unfortunately, after getting back to my hotel I discovered that I had lost a key. I called the restaurant and they looked around for the key, but didn't find it. They asked for my # and said that they would call if they found the key. Well, no luck. I even stopped back in and they checked the lost & found but no key. A week later I am back home and I get a call that a customer had found a key that fit the description of the one I lost. Even though I was back in California they offered to send it too me. A few days later my missing key arrived in the mail. No charge for the postage or anything. Now that's great service! I work in the customer service industry and I can honestly say that it is hard to find anyone who is willing to go out of their way anymore. I wasn't in the area anymore, so it's not like I was going to become a long term customer, they just helped me out because they could and I appreciate that. I'll definitely go back if I am in the area again.

Took the family to Big River Grill for dinner during an April trip to the area. Great atmosphere--lots of interesting things to look at on the wall, great local feel. We enjoyed our food a lot: steak sandwich was delicious; salmon alfredo was a big hit; garlic shrimp was delicious. We were there on the late side, and the place was pretty empty... but our service seemed rather indifferent. Never mind, we enjoyed our dinner there.

Not perfect, but excellent service (when it was busy). Great food. Chili coulda been a bit more chili than bean soup like, but that's a matter of preference. Genuine service staff, were present and with you, didn't feel rushed at all even though they were busy. Definitely coming back!

We stopped in here for a quick beer. We tired their IPA and it was refreshing after a hot day. Looking at the food it looked good. I want to come back here sometime and try the food. Big plates of mussels, Prime rib, burgers. It all looked great. We had different dinner plans.

I always hit up the Big River Grill if I'm out that way hiking or for other random adventures. The only thing I ever get is the veggie burger. Best in the Gorge! That's enough for me to give it 4 stars! Everyone I have gone with have always raved about their food as well. If you're in the area and need some grub, it's the place to eat.

  • Lapis E.

Good things: Local microbrews on tap, an ok selection of wine, big cozy booths, lots of bar stools, great food especially the veggie burger, good tunes..... The bad things: Once in awhile a moody waitress, sometimes a wait for a table/food and too few vegetarian entrees. The best part: A beautiful, funny waitress named Amber. She's the best waitress ever! I'm surprised that she didn't own the place. Other than all that, the food has always been great. Try the portabello mushroom burger for lunch and the ribeye for dinner followed by the decadent brownie McGee (enough for 3-4 sweet tooths). And definitely go on a Wednesday when they serve their famous African peanut chicken soup. To die for! I also recommend the soft goat cheese appetizer. Although classy enough to be a downtown hit in Portland, the dress code need not apply. Come as you are in your ovies or Sunday best.

Stopped by here on a fishing trip and loved it. Had the special (mushroom raviolis with pasta sauce and chicken), and it was really good. Wedding weekend in Stevenson! All our peeps came to town on Friday night and we took them up to the Big River Grill for some eats. BRG is a place we've been to many times and always loved it. We called ahead since we had a 14-top and wanted to make some reservations. They don't reserve seating, but we were lucky that they did have room for us to sit together. I guess it was a slow night in S-town since this place can be full at lunch time on weekdays. The soup of the day was a salmon chowder. I've had their salmon chowder before in a bread-bowl for lunch so had to get a cup of it. I also ordered the salmon dinner. I grew up on fresh salmon. My dad was a commericial fisherman so I can tell when it's good and when it's old. This stuff was good and fresh. I was presented well on the plate but for the life of me I can't recall the accompanying dished. As Simon Cowell would say.. they were forgetable. My wife-to-be had the searing ahi. It was done rare, the way she likes it, and she loved it. The rest of our group sampled the mussels special, steak, sandwiches, etc.... Everyone had great things to say about their meal. BRG also has Walking Man beers on tap, which was a crowd favorite since we had just been to WM a couple hours earlier. We will be back to BRG again and again as we love Stevenson!

Excellent -- someone who we were staying with in the area took us there. Great for vegetarians -- lasagne was the best I had -- also great vegetarian chili and housemade rootbeer. Service with a smile. Plus, it's on a cute street with other shops, like a cute and reasonably priced gift shop next door.

My wife and I felt like getting out of town (Portland) this morning, and found ourselves driving out Hwy 14 and stopping in Stevenson at the Big River Grill. We were met by a very sociable young man along with a couple nice girls who made up the serving staff. First, we ordered our drinks from the young man who promptly poured and served, but had them backwards. No big. (However, mine was an alleged lemonade which tasted as though a bit of juice from one of those cute little plastic lemons was added to a glass of ice water....then an actual lemon wedge was then inserted on the glass rim to encourage the illusion. (Worst lemonade EVER!) Then my wife ordered a bowl of chili and a salad and I ordered a basic burger and a cup of the daily soup special; New York Style clam chowder. Well.....the "New York Style Clam Chowder", possessed absolutely nothing eluded to by any of those words. It was neither chowder, nor clam, and any good New Yorker would've given these people a good tongue lashing for having the nerve to serve them (basically) Campbell's vegetable soup straight out of the can. True, it WAS a reddish color....which might mimic a "tomato base" touted by the server. I did find one piece of ham in it, but clams? Really.....if there was any part of a clam in there it had to be microscopic. Then there was the "Basic Burger" (which came ala carte).... $7 for a beef patty on a bun with one lone iceberg lettuce leaf and some mayo. Burgerville has an infinitely better burger complete with lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles & order goodies accompanied by fries and a drink for less than this pathetic lone smallish beef & bread. Meanwhile, across the table my lovely wife was staring into her bowl of soupy black beans.....which, no matter how hard I tried, I simply could not make it look (in my mind's eye) like anything resembling the thing most of us call "Chile". While she was thusly engaged, one of the girls came by and whisked her diet coke away to freshen it up.....without bothering to find out what it was she was refilling (as she had not taken our drink orders). She returned with a nice topped off glass of Iced Tea poured over the Diet Coke. Well....her heart was in the right place....but certainly her brain was somewhere else. The salad had that wilting look to it, and, although there is, on occasion, a time and a place in life for a good wilting look.....this certainly was NOT it! The consistency of this total experience was complete when it took me a good few minutes to even get a server's attention so we could at least pay for the damages and vacate the premises. Good food? What!? You guys have GOT to be kidding!? Good service? Another joke. This place doesn't have a CLUE about either of these things!!

Stayed the weekend in Stevenson & stopped at the Big River Grill the last day we were there. We should have stopped here first, Nice little place here! Friendly & helpful staff, plenty of help on hand. Busy but not crowded. Good menu choices & everything was nice & fresh. The fresh made salad dressings were the best, fresh & tasty, we had to buy some to go, (Pints were $6.00).
