Let me start with ORDER the Hillbilly Heap! When you read its content you will think twice, but it was awesome! Heart attack is likely but deferred (with any luck)! It is very much a mid century style diner. When you drive up it looks something like a converted Dairy Queen fast food restaurant. It is worn out as a physical plant. But before you enter there is a painted line at the front door that reads something like "Line Starts Here" and a simple posted sign encouraging patience and orderly conduct. That by itself made it worth trying this place. The food was excellent. The atmosphere was kind of fun. The services was just fine. It was a very nice experience.

If it's breakfast you want, this is the place. I thought it was a bit pricey at first until I saw the portions! They're really big. I went for breakfast there two times during my stay in Long Beach and got an omelette both times. Both were tasty and loaded with meat and cheese. My girlfriend got delicious looking French toast with peaches on top and waffles the next day. We would have gone back if we'd been around another day. Waitresses were real nice and kept our cups of water/coffee full. Food came fast. Nice place!

Amazing. Huge portions. Biscuits- well they look like huge fluffy squares of cornbread. Really good.!!!!!

Delicious! Make sure to bring your appetite, the servings are very BIG!

Based on the other Yelp reviews, we decided to give this place a try.. And the breakfast was GOOD!! We ended up going there for both the days we were visiting long beach! Hugeeee portions! You definitely need to share your meal unless you plan to take some of it for later :-) Only drawback - their coffee was too mild for me.. They charge you extra for extra plates (which is fine, but they should let the customers know beforehand) Highly recommend this to anyone who's looking for breakfast options.

I absolutely love this breakfast place!! For a restaurant that specalizes in breakfast only, I don't see a possibility of leaving disappointed. The food is wonderful and the ambience feels like breakfast at grandmas house. The staff are easy going and friendly. I came here with family on a whim and now I have to come back every time we visit long beach. If you have never been it's definitely a place to visit if you love breakfast.

We did it for breakfast and I loved it. The next time we're in Long Beach I want this to be our breakfast joint. First off, it's got one downside despite it's five star rating: The portions are just plain ridonkulous. Don't go crazy on side items. You probably will not need them unless you're an NFL lineman. I had the Hangtown Fry, which is one of my favorite dishes, and theirs was fantastic. Theirs comes with poached oysters, which I wasn't in the mood for -- I usually have the dish with grilled or fried oysters, so I opted for fried. Six HUGE oysters, and I mean HUGE. They were like oyster tenderloins practically mixed into the omelette and they also didn't skimp on the spinach, which many places do on this dish. For the side it was their "biscuit" which is code for a "biscuit loaf". You know, you're expecting a side biscuit, and you get a literal loaf of it instead. We also split an order of their cranberry banana bread which comes with cranberry butter: it's really, really, really good. Probably the best banana bread that I've ever had. It was so much food; I couldn't finish between splitting the banana bread and everything else, and tasting a bit of my wife's plate that was similarly filled to the rafters with French toast. But this isn't a place that just gets by on portion size -- we've all had a diner type spot like that. Quality AND quantity. If you go with a big group this would be a great place for everyone to get something different and everyone to go for a bite or two of everyone else's dish to try things out.

What's on a name? At Laurie's, Breakfast is their middle...literally! With a name like this one might suspect that they're a one trick pony but that is surely not the case. Their menu is a cornucopia of deliciousness. Our order covered a wide swath of the menu from the Cranberry Waffle to the Biscuits & Gravy to the Farmer's Breakfast and nothing disappointed us. We avoided the corned beef hash because the waitress said it was canned and she said the Eggs Benedict were "just eggs benedict". BIG positives for us were frequent coffee & water refills and the staff was happy to serve. We were initially were s bit worried about the menu prices which seemed high for a breakfast spot but the ridiculous portion sizes overcame our concerns. We took home to go boxes easily weighing a pound and a half. Total ticket price was about $30 for 3 people but the quality was outrageous. The place apparently has been for sale for some time because of the aged the sign out front. We asked and the cashier informed us that the owner wants to retire though the staff is trying to talk her out of it. Whoever buys the place is buying a goldmine. Needs just a small bit of updating but just keep doing what your doing!!

We've probably eaten here almost a dozen times over the years. The other breakfast options in the Long Beach area are pretty minimal (I still haven't convinced my family to try The Lamplighter for breakfast...or any other meal, for that matter). And Laurie's always delivers the goods: hearty portions, friendly service, and decent prices. Don't be intimidated by the line waiting for a table; it goes pretty quick 'cuz they bust booty bussing the tables.

This place is exactly what you want out of a local breakfast joint. Quirky decor, sarcastic menus that celebrate ginormous portions and disparage healthy options, and incredible food. Caution: the biscuits are about 3x bigger than you expect. Plan accordingly. Bonus: they serve grits!

I have to say from the onset that I did not wind up eating here. I tried, but let me explain... First, my wife and I did stop in for breakfast before heading out of Long Beach after a brief visit. One point I want to make: Someone please work with Laurie on her marketing strategies. Please let her know that barraging customers with negative imperatives does not create a welcoming atmosphere. At the door you are greeted with a sign "No outside food or drinks. NO EXCEPTIONS" (add underlining, highlighting). Next, on the menu there were 4-5 variations of "NO SUBSTITUTIONS, NO EXCEPTION" (again, add highlighting). The menu item for oatmeal even has "(Sheesh)" added to it, as if only a moron or a democrat would order oatmeal in a restaurant. Forget the plethora of reasons someone might actually want to order oatmeal for breakfast, Laurie wants to make it clear that this is the most ridiculous idea she's ever heard of. While we are talking about oatmeal, reason number 2 for this generally negative review: If the commentary on ordering oatmeal isn't enough to dissuade you, the $10.95 (American) price for a bowl of it will. And we are not talking something fancy like steel cut (like the $6.95 bowl sold by her competitor across the street). Not liking the feeling of being ripped off, even while on vacation, my wife and I decided to leave, so I paid for the cup of coffee I'd taken 2 sips of (which was actually quite good, I'll give them that) and we left. I'm sure the food is as delicious and plentiful as the other Yelpers report, so if you are in the mood for something other than oatmeal (and a welcoming menu), then I'm sure you'll be wondering "What is that idiot even talking about?" Well, at least this idiot took himself across the road for a delicious, and welcoming, meal.

Awesome local diner in town! On the weekend you will most likely have to wait a little bit since the place is small but not more than 10-15 minutes. It's worth it. It's everything you want in a diner from the mismatch mugs to the overall nic nac design. Don't miss out on the Marion berry pancakes!

    (5)
  • LL P.

Clever menu with a variety of choices. Very well laid out design, mostly booths with pretty much any condiment you could want already on the table! You definitely won't leave hungry - and you'll probably want to go back to try one of their other delicious breakfast options!

I was pleased that so many diners in Long Beach feature lots of seafood items on their menus -- even at breakfast -- and Laurie's Homestead Breakfast House was no exception. If the portions were half the size and a few bucks cheaper, I would have liked it even more. The dining area is not very large, maybe the size of a typical fast-food joint, and they have an odd waiting system: people line up outside in the parking lot behind a red velvet rope and wait for a table of the right size to open up. There's no waiting area inside to speak of, so I guess that's why, but I have no idea what they do when it's rainy outside or the lines get long. Anyway, get ready to wait outside for an indeterminate period of time before you're called in. Inside, it has a sort of rustic-meets-Bavarian country theme, and it seems pretty casual and no-frills, right down to the mismatched mugs and plates. The tables are so close together that you're basically sitting with strangers, which is kind of weird when they feel entitled to comment on your meal selections. They have typical diner breakfast stuff: omelets, scrambles, pancakes, biscuits and gravy. I almost got the Hangtown Fry (oyster omelet), but since we'd already had one somewhere else, opted for the seafood scramble. It was ENORMOUS (they say three eggs, but it has to be more like 4-5) and had a generous portion of assorted seafood (although the shrimp were those tiny salad shrimp), but at $16, it was quite a bit more than I wanted to pay for breakfast. However, it did come with a side of cranberry-banana bread and whipped cranberry butter that was outstanding, and you can opt for grits on the side instead of hash browns, which I recommend. The menu states very explicitly that no substitutions are allowed, ever, on anything, so this is probably not the place to go if you have dietary restrictions or want to be able to customize your meal. I assume it's because they're busy and special requests would slow down the kitchen? Otherwise, the service was cordial, if briskly efficient. I definitely felt like we were an order being processed, but in some ways that's better than fake folksy charm. I normally roll my eyes when people claim that portions are so huge, two people can share one meal and feel full, but it's actually true here! If you order individual entrees, you'll end up paying too much and wasting quite a bit of the food, which kind of soured the experience for me. Overall, it's a decent breakfast spot if you're in Long Beach, but I don't think I would make much effort to go back.

There was quite a wait to get into this place, and I've never seen the kinds of waiting they have here. There's a little rope and sidewalk where instructions let you know to wait in line. I didn't expect a wait on a Monday around 11, but there was about 15 minutes in line, with no chance to have a conversation. Luckily, it was worth the wait. The food was plentiful and reasonably priced, omelets and hash browns and grits. The oil it was cooked seemed a little off, but otherwise it was a tasty meal. And the service was very quick! We will be back!

  • Melissa C.

This place is awesome! The portions are HUGE as most other reviewers have said! My husband got the full portion of biscuits and gravy and I got the O.M.G. Scramble.... sooooo good! I added their homemade sour cream and tapatio... so much food that we have leftovers and can't wait to eat it all over again! This is such a gem if you are in the area for the first time! Try it out! You won't be disappointed! And neither will your stomach!

Absolutely loved all the food we ordered! You must have patience as it is very busy but all great thing's are worth a wait. Definitely will be back here. This will be our go to breakfast spot everytime we visit the area. Loved the food, staff and atmosphere! Great homestyle cooking.

Huge four page breakfast menu. Great service and lots of food for the price. Booths have only wooden seats, so go for a table if you need some padding.

Best Breakfast since we moved to the area, and you get plenty! My daughter got the biscuits and gravy (biscuit the size of a mans hand) and hash browns. I got the 222, which is 2 eggs, 2 thick slices of bacon, and 2 HUGE buttermilk pancakes! Great coffee and service. Will defiantly be back!!!

Just had great veggie cheese omelette, crispy hash browns & bacon for me, eggs over easy, ham & hash browns for hubby. Friendly, super fast service on a Friday noon & large portions.. Good coffee! Great selection of hot sauces if you 'lika da heat'!Would be awesome to be able to get 1/2 orders, can never seem to get my guy to split something with me & hate wasting food! Might even be more profitable depending on how it was done..just a thought. Prepare for leftovers

Holy mother of God. If you are in town, eat here. Couldn't possibly be a better place. I'm from GA and this place does it just like home. Not kitchy and fake... They know how to cook. And get black beans with your meal. Amazing!!

  • Rebecca H.

Odd, but very good. When we walked up to the door, there was sign that told us to wait outside on the stairs for a table. I found that strange. The sign did assure us that the staff would see us and bring us in when there was a table. Once inside, it was like every other restaurant, except, as other reviewers have mentioned they serve mammoth size portions. Just the cornbread/muffin that came with my husbands meal was 4 inches by 2 inches. He ate his oyster omelet (HUGE) and hash browns and never touched the cornbread.I had a pretty standard eggs and sausage breakfast and my grandkids ate waffles buried in fruit in whipped cream. They were not complaining. Great food, nice staff and a bit of an odd set-up.

Was downtown with some friends we wanted a good place for breakfast and a local suggested that we come here. They had a long line outside and parking was hard to find but we decided to stay and give it a try. I ordered the chicken fried steak and eggs with a side of biscuits and gravy and really enjoyed it. My friends also enjoyed the food that they ordered. The portions are huge and you will not leave this place hungry. Staff was really friendly and we never had to ask for refills on any of our drinks. The only thing that I would suggest is that they change the decor. Place felt really old and cramped.

We were in town for the rod run and decided on Lauries for breakfast on Saturday morning. Although it was a super busy morning the wait wasn't all that long and well worth it. Breakfast was delicious and plentiful. - Hubby had bacon and eggs which also comes with a hearty portion of hashbrowns and toast/bisquit. Everything was cooked as requested and enjoyed thoroughly. - I had 1/2 bisquit/gravy with 1 egg scrambled. Wonderful! - OJ appeared to be fresh with a ton of pulp garnished with a yummi fresh strawberry. - Hot chocolate topped with whipped cream is almost a meal itself! Also garnished with a strawberry. - Everything was so great that we returned on Sunday morning and ordered the same exact things! - Both mornings the staff was very courteous and accommodating. Food came out in a timely manner and was fresh/hot! We will definitely be back!

They are open again!!! Best breakfast ever!! They close during the slow season. Huge portions with homemade DELICIOUS food. Their freshly baked breads and biscuits with their very own butters (last time we had pumpkin bread with pumpkin butter) are incredible!

  • Renee H.

Looking for a good breakfast, you found it!! The moment we walked through the door we were greeted with smiles and felt at home. We ordered the chocolate pancake, 1/2 order of biscuits and gravy and a scramble with hash browns, eggs and gravy (can't remember the name). All of it tasted amazing, just like down home cookin. This will definitely be a stop we make every time we visit!

First the whole atmosphere is very negative. We waited in line for 45 minutes, but we expected a wait. At first we were told it would be just another minute before we could come in and a "table" was almost ready (after about 30 minutes of waiting.) FYI it was raining. The first woman we talked to disappeared and we were asked a second time how many people in our party. We were then told "the only place we can seat four people is at the counter while outside where we couldn't see the restaurant and seating arrangements. My husband and I exchanged glances - what restaurant doesn't have booths. We weren't offered the ability to wait so we walked in. We would have waited another 15 minutes for a booth after 45 it wouldn't have been a big deal. The restaurant is lined with booths. A table cleared as we were standing at the counter. We asked to be seated at a booth. We were told "Laurie's rule is no moving when there is a line" there was a couple (two people) outside that had waited maybe 20 minutes that were sat in the booth. Shortly after another booth cleared, but still no moving aloud even though there was no line. Omelets had crispy raw vegetables in them. The OMG Omelets seem like all the "left overs" and isn't very tasty FYI you don't even know what your getting. I assumed it was a scramble I had seen a post about (which looked and sounded awesome) but it wasn't they do daily special scrambles and the post must have been one of those - my bad for assuming. The portions are large but over-priced. The oj is store bought but priced like fresh squeezed. The staff is very moody and rude. This could be related to the place being up for sale and the possibility that they could lose their jobs.

This place is outstanding. They have a good crew of staff that give you the warm home style hospitality. The food was great, large portions and have the homemade taste. Great price as well. I'll be going back next time I'm in Long beach!

Our first choice across the street was closed on Monday's so we decided to go here. Very friendly staff although the young man in the dirty white T-shirt that brought us water and coffee was monkey pawing dirty glassware from tables w/out washing his hands. The portions are huge but that novelty dies soon after a few bites. Reaching for some ketchup to help temper the greasy browns I was disgusted to see a "full" bottle that looked like it had been getting refilled since the Clinton administration. As I write this post some five hours since leaving that half plate of food my only wish is that we had more toilet paper at this rental home. Once bitten....

Whenever we're in Long Beach, we always eat breakfast here at least once during our stay. They menu is extensive and the portions are huge - we've never left without left overs. We have yet to order something we don't like. Be ready for a wait as this place is usually packed, especially during the summer months but I assure you it's absolutely worth the wait! Oh and if it's cold - order a hot chocolate - if you're a kid at heart like me, it makes you happy because they pile on whip cream :-)

It's been a while since I've been to Laurie's, but I used to come here A LOT during clamming season with my family. I remember the service being so warm and prompt, the portions enormous (which one needs before a day of clam digging!) and the food was obviously fresh and homemade. Our family's favorite was the biscuits and gravy. My dad made the mistake of ordering a "full order," which nearly came out on its own pizza pan with soft biscuits that were sky-high. The seating is a bit tight but when you're digging into your breakfast, you don't notice. Be sure to get there early and get in line! We've stood out in the rain and wind some mornings waiting for a table, the food is THAT GOOD!

Stopped in here after a couple days of camping with the kids. The service was fantastic; we got great attention from multiple people. The food was great as well. I had clams and eggs (when in Rome...) and the kids had pancakes. Going to restaurants with our three little girls is always an adventure, but the staff was very patient and helpful. We hope to get back there someday.

5 stars for the ridiculous portions and ultra tasty biscuits and gravy. 5 stars for the service (our waters and coffee were never less than half full). 5 stars for the comedic bits in the menu. 3 stars for the decor (yeesh, how can chickens be on EVERYTHING?!) 0 stars for the cleanliness of the place (The numerous bottles of tabasco on our table looked like they had never been cleansed of those nasty crusties that regularly require attention AND there was a pitcher of room temperature cream for coffee on our table that didn't smell so hot) Ultimately: homemade, greasy spoon breakfast that was way cheaper and tastier than a lot of other options in the area. We will be back.

I have been meaning to write this review for sometime. While having a little mini vacation we went to Laurie's for breakfast and were very pleasantly surprised! I had the marionberry waffles and my friend ordered an omlette. Not only was the food amazing and quick for how packed the place was, but the portions were out of this world! My friend's omlette came with a biscuit, but it was the size of my head! We could have easily shared an order, but I am glad we ordered what we did, because everything was wonderful. We stuffed our faces and shared our meals, so we could try a little bit of everything and left full and happy. We had a little something for dinner, because we were still full from breakfast and that was quite satisfying!

Big portions...not recommended for flavor or plate appeal. Had the salmon scramble. The smoked salmon was fishy. Couldn't eat it. My husband had two eggs over easy, bacon, hash browns and toast. Very bland and little flavor.

OmyGosh. This place is fabulous. We were greeted cheerfully at the door by a man we took as the owner. There were three cheery lady servers as well and they all took care of us equally. Coffee and iced tea never got empty. Our order arrived quickly and the staff made sure to get it done before a large party took over the kitchen. I much appreciated "The Honeymooner", a large portion of oysters, eggs, hash browns and toast. Prices are a little on the high side, but not out of line four a tourist town. Totally worth it. Yum!!!

Laurie's Homestead hit the spot to say it simply. Jaime L., Eric C. and I jaunted up to Long Beach to visit a friend in town for the weekend and decided to pop in here for breakfast Sunday morning. We must have had amazing timing because we were seated immediately, which was fortunate judging by the huge line waiting outside upon our departure. Jaime went with a Belgian waffle and bacon, which looked scrumptious. Usually I am not a fan of breakfast meat because more often than not it comes out limp and greasy, and I regret consuming it once it hits my stomach, but Jaime's bacon looked thick cut, lean and crunchy. Eric and I both decided to order the Hillbilly Hash, which was a hashbrown and egg scramble with sausage gravy on top, and an enormous biscuit on the side. It's safe to assume that I didn't even make it halfway through my scramble or touch my biscuit, but they made wonderful leftovers for the next day after I popped them in our cooler. Eric decided to add on an order of sausage, which, again, I was wary of until it arrived. At that point I changed my tack and demanded a bite. The sausage was a perfectly cooked german sausage that wasn't greasy in the least, rather juicy and flavorful. Coffee was great and service was wonderful. Our waitress was prompt about everything from getting our orders out to us swiftly, to refilling drinks, and getting to-go boxes. The staff works like a well-oiled machine here, helping each other out so that things get done as efficiently as possible, and they were all very friendly. I would be glad to visit againt he next time I stay in the Long Beach area.

Stopped by and was quickly greeted and seated on a Saturday morning. Ordered the Hillbilly Heap with Sourdough toast. Server was attentive by not overly so, thank you. A large portion of food, a little on the bland side, but they probably expect you to do your own seasoning since taste can vary so much. Stick to your ribs kind of food. After eating 1/4 of the portion I was stuffed. I would come back.

Wow! The biscuits are amazing and huge!! Homemade strawberry butter..yum. The banana bread was to die for! Service was outstanding! Potatoes cookex to perfection...gravy had homemade sausage, half order is enough to feed an army...I will most definitely go back!!

Easily the best breakfast in the area, and worth driving a ways for if you have the time. Huge menu, huge portions, and they will make you almost any combination of anything you could ever dream of. The décor and "uniforms" are definitely more hokey than charming, but who cares? Anyone coming here for a "romantic breakfast" should be able to tell that this isn't the place for that before they walk in the building. They do close for a period of months in the offseason, so be sure to call ahead to make sure they're open outside Spring and Summer months.

  • Cody W.

It's what you walked in for. Country Grandma making hearty farmhand breakfasts with no nonsense and a menu that may or may not have a few items suggested by toddlers. Big biscuits bribe me, that's a confession. Fluffy pancakes, good salmon omelet, a menu that's hard to narrow down and makes you want to earmark it for next time through town. The wait is long, and seating for large parties is somewhat discouraged (signs suggest parties of 5+ might get split, but our 6 were seated together).

Don't let the roosters scare you away! They are everywhere. it was pretty good breakfast, can't go wrong with bacon (crisp), eggs and real hashbrowns. Sit at a table, the booths aren't comfy.

  • Danielle H.

First of all the staff was very sweet and accommodating. I needed to change my order right after the waitress put it in and she fixed it with a smile. :) However I was hoping for more than a greasy spoon (not my style). Unfortunately all I could taste in the hashbrowns was butter. Not potato but butter (or butter flavor shortening). If you are looking for a healthy option this is not your place.

breakfast was great. Had a veggie omelet and a homemade bisquit which was HUGE. The coffee was perfect. This restaurant is not open late, so be sure to get in there early. If it is full inside, the line forms outside as the restaurant breakfast are worth the wait. Not great for huge groups, but perfect for groups of 4-6. Servers were friendly and service was good

A-OK, very friendly very big portions if your order right, ours was on the small size, but I don't need anymore food. The Eggs Benidict was good but a bit pricy considering you get mainly hash browns and 2 eggs/ham with a splash of what was very very tastey hollandaise sauce. You will have to wait outside if they are crowded, the food was very fresh, and fast. You may wonder why only 3 stars, well, I'm picky with stars. This place is a Solid 3 stars, 3.5 if I could rate that way.

We had the worst breakfast in memory here on 10/28/12. After this experience ( I wouldn't call it a meal) we wished we had gone to McDonalds instead and we were both sick in the stomach soon after leaving this place and had to make an emergency pit stop on the way home to relieve ourselves. I ordered the razor clams and my dining companion ordered the corned beef hash, and both came with hash browns and poached eggs and biscuit. The eggs, which were the tiniest I've ever seen, and the giant biscuits were the only things edible. The razor clans were too tough to eat (I immediately was concerned when they served it with a steak knife!) and the rectangle(?) of corned beef hash was too salty and tasted worse than canned corn beef hash. The hash browns were tough and tasted like cardboard and grease. I cannot remember the last time we ate out and left so much food behind. When I voiced my concern about the razor clams being too tough to eat, the person wanted to see my leftovers. I thought that was weird but I pointed out the partially chewed pieces of clam and whole pieces still left on my plate. She said I should have said something and if I had been dining alone I would have but when you're with someone it makes for an awkward dining experience when one person has food and the other doesn't. Are they supposed to eat while you wait or do they wait and let their food get cold? Instead of comp-ing the uneaten meal, they only took $3 from the $25 bill. We normally eat at the 42nd Street Cafe just across the street but wanted to try something different this time. Never again. Do yourself a favor and run, don't walk, to the 42nd Street Cafe and have a wonderful meal. They have NEVER disappointed us. Update 5/29/13 42nd Street DID disappoint us and then snubbed our emails to them.

The perfect breakfast place for a seaside town. The portions are huge, the food straight-up greasy diner, with a side of seafood. I had a blue cheese and bacon omelette that must have had 8 pieces of bacon inside -- I had to leave a pile on my plate, and still felt ridiculously full! The hubby had a smoked salmon omelette which he said was good, the hashbrowns were crispy, etc. Our 5-year-old had pancakes, eggs and bacon, a good deal and a big portion. But here's where the fun begins. We ordered him a hot cocoa, which was a kid's dream -- the whipped cream was taller than the mug itself, with rainbow sprinkles and a strawberry. When we left, Laurie gave him a candy necklace. He was in heaven. Luckily we got there early (8:30 on a Tues morning), because by the time we left the place was packed. Afterward, we headed straight to the Discovery Trail along the beach and biked off some of the bacon. :)

My husband and I love eating here! The portions are huge and the prices very reasonable. The seating is a bit limited, and there is nowhere for people to wait inside, so you have to wait outside. So far I have enjoyed everything I have ordered except for the buckwheat pancakes, they were kind of dry. The potato pancakes were fantastic. My husband is a big eater, and he has never been able to finish a meal here. Good thing we like leftovers!

Great food, good prices, great customer service, good variety of tea definitely will return The place gets busy so if you are an early riser like me it was not a problem early in the AM. Family atmosphere so screaming kids......again, get there early and it wont be a problem.

Wife and I went here for breakfast after a local recommended us here - We pulled in the parking lot and got on my Yelp app to check it out before heading in - some good and some really bad reviews, so we decided to try it for ourselves. Should have listened to the bad reviews! The food has absolutely no taste! I love breakfast and am a very big eater so when I was told that the portions here were massive (which they are), this sounded like the spot for me. I got about a third down of the farmers breakfast and just didn't want anymore because it tasted like cardboard - and my wife's french toast wasn't cooked. Also the prices are not very cheap (my wife ordered a $5 side of bacon for 3 strips!! This made me even more frustrated I was letting food go to waste that I paid good money for but neither my wife or I could finish the food because it just didn't taste good at all. The only reason I gave this place two stars is because the young waitress we had was nice and friendly. Bottom line, food here is not very good.

I am revising my first review for Laurie's. My initial experience prompted me to write a detailed review of Laurie's including some of the low points of my experience. I included high points too, mostly accounting for how charming the owners were, but in the end my 3 stars still conveyed a fairly unsatisfied customer. Laurie herself wrote me a very kind letter in response to my experience. It inspired me to update this review to let people know that although my individual experience could have been better, it does seem pretty obvious that the majority of customers have a lovely time and food while enjoying Laurie's. I have decided to pare down my original review to better convey that Laurie's is a good ole beach town breakfast joint with many hard workers, I just had an unlucky experience the day I came, I hope to return to experience what it is clear that others keep coming back for!: When I first came here, my experience was hard to judge. I was seated at the bar to start my meal, and then later squeezed out when a waitress seated another portly man next to me, and believe me, I'm not petite to start with. I was uncomfortable for most of the rest of my time there, and my actual breakfast seemed to have been the unlucky plate leaving the kitchen that day with over cooked eggs. But to be entirely fair, there were some serious high points to the experience as well. Laurie and her family were very present in the business taking great care of customers with speed and gusto. Service was friendly, accurate, and timely. The high points were the service and the ambiance, and all the other plates leaving the kitchen seemed to have more gently cooked eggs than my unlucky ones- though next time, I think I will choose a table :)

I will not go here again. First when you get there you have to stand outside in a line and wait for a table. If you have more than 4 people (including children) in your party you won't be able to sit together. Our party had to be spread out all over the restaurant. The woman that seated us was frankly just plain rude. She was a larger woman with dark hair in a bun. This place is NOT family friendly. Next our waitress was very nice. The food was good and the portions were large BUT they charge $0.50 for an extra plate?!!! That's just ridiculous. I just want to emphasize that this was NOT a family friendly establishment. I will NOT go here again, I will find somewhere that is more accommodating. And for take out they charge an additional $1.00 per item.

Laurie's was recommended to us, but certainly there must be someplace better. The staff was friendly and very accommodating. The coffee arrived as soon as we were seated and it took some time to read the entire menu. Potato pancakes are one of my favorite things in the whole world, but these were dry and not much flavor. I was served two huge cakes. Maybe it would have been better to serve just one and really make it something worth eating. My husband's biscuit and gravy was not good at all. The biscuit was good, but the gravy was obviously not homemade. It had a strange sweet taste and the sausage nuggets seemed very artificial. My daughter's peanut butter pancakes were good, but again, just two HUGE pancakes with a big scoop of peanut butter on the top. That's the way we eat them at home, but the serving of peanut butter here was equal to what the three of us eat at home. The bacon and eggs were good and perfectly cooked. Next time we'll find someplace else.

I ate breakfast at Laurie's this morning. What can I say this is the place to eat. Great Breakfast and good service. They even had grits which put this Mississippi boy in Heaven. The bacon is thick and crisp. It was overall an excellent experience.

Great breakfast place, always busy - definitely plan ahead on summer weekend days. Entrees are mostly American favorites. Don't bother with the PB&J omelette.

There are better places to eat breakfast, unless you're all about quantity, and then you'll be happy here if you can stand waiting for a while. Food was standard fare, just LOTS of it, way more than a normal person can eat. If you go on a weekend, you will stand outside and wait, and if you want something a little different, you will also be disappointed that you did. I'd drive to Astoria and hit the Pig N Pancake next time.

Going to Laurie's is like going to grandma's...the kitchen is busy, the place smells of home cooked food and the place is filled. The pancakes are terrific, the hashbrowns are the best and the biscuits and gravy are so good. If you're in Long Beach area you have to try Laurie's.

We love Laurie's! It is like another diner said, like being at grandma's house. This is the place we go every Rod Run weekend for breakfast, tried other places and they didn't compare. Great food and service, the coffee isn't Stumptown but it is better than most and the food makes up for that. Best biscuits on the planet Yes, there is a wait most times to get seated. We think it is worth it.

This is THE place for breakfast on the peninsula. Weekends can be really busy, especially during the summer. They have good coffee and HUGE portions. I love the potato pancakes. They also have really good biscuits.

  • Brad R.

Biggest portions on the planet. My brother ordered the biscuits and gravy, holy crap that's a boat load of food and really good quality as well. I ordered the skillet and couldn't even come close to finishing it. You really have to split meals here unless you're Kobiashi the hot dog eating champion. Good service and ambiance for a small town diner. I saw a couple of hot chocolates go by and my jaw hit the floor. Loaded up like a chocolate sunday with whipcream and other goodies. If you are in Long Beach and looking for breakfast, this is a must stop.

Okay, I say this as a mid-westerner, 6'4, about 225, give or take. I had the biscuits & gravy & they kicked my ass (pardon my french but there isn't another turn of phrase which is adequate). I was a skeptic when I read "two HUGE biscuits" on the menu, I'm a believer now... Huge doesn't do justice to this dish, they're gargantuan, but, the size isn't to be the only note about these biscuits. They were so fluffy & wonderful that they deserve a despicable me link ( youtube.com/watch?v=uADQ… ) However, I wish that I'd got half an order so I didn't feel defeated when I didn't finish my breakfast. Really, it's a lot of food, an awful lot of food... I would have been hurting for more than half the day if I hadn't stopped myself from behaving like I was the host of man vs. food. The portions were very generous, everything is delicious, everyone was friendly. I have nothing but good things to say, I'll be back next time I'm visiting Long Beach (err... Seaview).

Wow! Huge portions, typical diner feel and homestyle food and these were by far the nicest servers in all the restaurants on the Long Beach peninsula. Price point is inexpensive and will definitely be back next visit!

I came here seeking out a good breakfast place in the area and boy was I disappointed. The service was mediocre, but I was mostly appalled by the cleanliness of the place. The tables were cluttered with condiments, way more than anyone could possibly need to the point of them all getting in the way. There was an open container of half and half for coffee which I assume had been sitting out on the table for quite a while as it had little lint pieces on top of it and looked like it was starting to separate and they expected me to use THAT in my coffee. The silverware was dirty when the food arrived and the food itself was pretty disgusting. I worry how cleanly the kitchen is if they would allow the side of the joint the customer sees to be so terrible.

Lots of "rave" reviews led us to visit Laurie's ... but I wasn't all that impressed. Now I can't say it was bad, because it wasn't, but my experience wasn't as great as the impression of the many other reviews. Admittedly, the Long Beach peninsula does not have many choices (and the place we went to last year has changed hands)... Service was reasonably prompt. The menu is extensive ... but is missing a "standard" breakfast of meat-eggs-hashbrowns-and toast. (This can be assembled from the side dish choices, but is then rather expensive.) The less-elaborate breakfasts all offer choice of pancakes or waffle ... (no toast) ... so I had my eggs/bacon with a waffle (no toping). It was decent, but the eggs (over easy) where slightly scorched with a "crispy edge" (not to the extent requiring a complaint, but a definite minus. Wife had the Marion berry waffle which was huge, very filling and fairly sweet. Price was reasonable, except the cut of coffee was $3.50 ... somewhat of a surprise. Given the limited alternatives, we'd probably eat there again, but I wouldn't exactly be thrilled at the prospect.

My boyfriend and I went camping one spring weekend at Cape Disappointment. The campsite was great, but Laurie's restaurant certainly lived up to the Disappointment. Waking up in a tent seems to inspire the massive craving for a hearty breakfast, so after consulting Yelp, we braved the line at Laurie's. A cutesy chicken motif bedecks every surface in the restaurant, which made me suspicious - it's been my experience that those who employ chintzy chickens are making up for a serious lack of authentic homey goodness (i.e. those rich Republicans who live in Redmond and keep porcelain chickens on their granite kitchen counters). Turns out I was right. Gigantic portions, but they were utterly tasteless. I got the Farmer's whatever, which is a huge flapjack filled with eggs and ham, with a side of creamed corn syrup. I'm not sure what I was thinking, but it didn't even benefit from the huge amount of fat and cholesterol that came with it - the dish was terribly dry and bland. I don't even remember what my boyfriend got - maybe something with clams? It was a bad idea, too, and made his stomach hurt later. The cranberry bread with cranberry butter, however, was worthwhile. I should have just stopped there.

This is a fantastic place for a big, hearty breakfast! If you are looking to save money you can definitely split any of the dishes I saw come out of the kitchen and get a full belly. I knew right away it was going to be legit, because each table had a minimum of 5-6 condiments on it. I had the same thing for breakfast both Saturday and Sunday mornings, because, well, if it ain't broke! The veggie omelette had a good cheese-egg-veggie ratio and was large, and for a side I ordered the black beans. I wasn't sure how they were going to go with my breakfast, but they ended up being delicious (they come with sour cream, cheese, and homemade salsa on top....mmm). I didn't have any room for the toast the first morning, but the second morning I ordered some banana-berry bread with the delicious berry butter to give to the bf, and boy was it delicious! The decor is kind of kitchy in a good way, and the menu is entertaining. The only weird thing is that they have the door blocked off with a rope and a sign that indicates you must wait outside until someone comes to help you. It was a beautiful weekend, so we didn't mind! Laurie's is definitely where I will get breakfast next time I go to Long Beach!

I tried Laurie's once again after taking a break from it for a while. Ordered the kitchen sink omelet and it was truly the kitchen sink, complete with a handful of frozen corn and slices of processed mesquite chicken. Not sure I loved it, but the portion was large. Thought I'd get smart (cost wise) and order a side of gravy for my biscuit that came with omelet, but they outsmarted me charging a good amount for a cup of sausage gravy. This is definitely middle of the road for the Peninsula. The best breakfast in the area is across the street at 42nd street café for about the same price (try the pot roast hash or jambalaya omelet) and the best value is a couple blocks away at Rod's Lamplighter. (Don't let the worst décor around fool you) The food's really good for a greasy spoon, they even shred their own potatoes for hash browns. (Try the chicken fried steak!)

Nothing like your body recovering from a night of drinking to have it crave something homey, satisfying, and unhealthy. Add on top of that huge enough portions to put you back into a food-induced sleep (perfect for nursing that hangover), and you have a diner worth writing about. This little gem tucked away in the city of Long Beach is what I wish were near me back in Seattle. Expecting standard "Shari's/Denny's" fare with salty, boring breakfast food, I was pleasantly proven wrong. Having gotten the chicken fried steak, the gravy was thick and savory while the steak was not overly seasoned or dry like most places. Though normally I'm not a fan of hasbrowns, they were cooked perfectly with a pillowy center and a crispy crust with the accompanying biscuit being the size of a Harry Potter novel. If ever I find myself in this area in the future and I have no heart problems, this will definitely be on my "must go" list. Be warned though that it is only open until 1pm so a little effort to get out of bed is needed. Food: 5/5 Service:5/5 Decor: standard diner- 3/5

Yummy comfort food with huge portion sizes. Great prices too. Prepared to be full about halfway through your breakfast. It's okay because you can just take your leftovers to go and eat it for breakfast the next day. Usually, there is a long line around brunch time on the weekends. Me and my boyfriend waited for about 30 to 40 minutes to be seated, but we're okay with that. We hardly ever make it to Long Beach, but when we do visit, we make sure to have breakfast at Laurie's. Once seated, the service is fast. Order the hot chocolate. You will be pleasantly surprised :].

First time in Long Beach and knew this was the best breakfast place in town. Doesn't look like much from the outside but the line out the door tells you everything you need to know. Got the full order of biscuits and gravy and had no idea what I was getting myself into. Probably couldn't have finished half an order. The biscuits are truly the size of bricks. Great, BIG breakfast!

Note this review is written 3/31/13 for a visit on 3/18/13. I read earlier reviews before our trip to the Long Beach Peninsula. I can report that this place is open (for now), since it does have a realtor sign posted out front. It is located diagonal from the 42nd Street Cafe. We were looking for a hearty meal before heading back home after a 3 day weekend and this place didn't disappoint. Interior decor was "country kitchen" with a lot of roosters abound. The place was fairly full, so it took awhile to get our orders taken. We ordered a short stack of pancakes, breakfast meat scramble (ham, sausage, bacon), chicken fried steak with grits, and ginormous biscuits. One of the biggest collection of hot sauces at our table to note! Bummer though it didn't taste like real butter and definitely not real maple syrup from the big dispenser at the table. Thankfully, we were seated in the corner where there are plenty of to go containers and napkins within arm's reach. The biscuits had to be taken home and were eaten two days later heated with butter and honey, they were delicious. Definitely skip the toast, get the monstrously sized biscuits! Wait staff seemed reserved but when I paid up front and mentioned how much I enjoyed our stay and our meal - the cashier/ waitperson actually smiled. Fortified and ready for the long drive back home, another decent find in the Long Beach Peninsula.

Had breakfast here for the first and hopefully not last time this morning!! Chicken fried steak was very nummie!! Great beach cafe atmosphere. Friendly staff. Kids at other tables were loving the tall hot chocolates with a big mound of whip cream :) See you next time we are in town.

Very cute "house" that was made in to a business, made in to a restaurant. We went for breakfast on a Monday morning and were seated within about 5 minutes if that. The staff was nice enough but not overly friendly. I ordered eggs, sausage, and wheat toast. It was all well prepared and tasted good. Everyone else loved their food as well. I didn't get one or try my friends, but the biscuits were HUGE. Over all I'd go here again.

I'm a sucker for breakfast, so a restaurant specializing in old fashioned, comfort food for breakfast is my kind of place. Laurie's is comfy from the moment you walk in. From the kitschy decor to the big rooster mug of coffee that reminds me of something my mom would give me, it had a home-like feel. The menu offered a variety of options, so there was something to choose whether you want sweet or savory.. or both. They even appealed to my inner Southerner by serving grits. And they were damned good grits, too. For my main course, I had a cranberry waffle. It was tasty and crispy, covered with puree cranberries, berry butter, and whipped cream. It was probably the best waffle I've had! I long for these kind of homestyle restaurants for breakfast, and my only regret is that it is not closer to home.

I'm not sure how this place gets such outstanding reviews - maybe just locals that have grown used to the taste of the food here? I don't get it. My boyfriend and I came in from Portland for the weekend to stay in Long Beach. We checked out this place for breakfast on our last morning in the area because of the great reviews I saw on Yelp. Well, I guess Yelp can't always be right. This place has a very mundane feel to it on the inside. Think Denny's, but more miserable. It was quite crowded, so I know that business goes well enough for the place (somehow) to keep it going. I do have to mention that the customer service was just fine and the waitress that we quite literally only encountered for 1 - 2 seconds at a time was very friendly. However, the positives end there. Our food came out in (literally) less than four minutes, which is terrifying to me. I don't mind putting in a good wait for food that's been prepared well and has noticeable effort put into it. The plates that arrived in front of us were just sad. I ordered a smoked salmon omelette that came with hashbrowns and a side of toast. My boyfriend ordered the oyster omelette that came with similar sides. We were served what looked like huge mounds of pale, flavorless, undercooked egg with saltwater goop smashed into them. That is basically how they tasted. I couldn't stomach the egg or the salmon inside of it because it was drenched in saltwater. It did not have any salmon flavor to it whatsoever. The hashbrowns were definitely brown on the very top, but underneath was a pile of mushy potatoes that looked and tasted like they barely hit the skillet before they were taken off. The toast I didn't care so much about, but they asked which kind I wanted, so I told them sourdough. When I bit into generic white bread with no trace of sourdough whatsoever, I was a little confused why they had even asked for my choice at all. Neither of us were able to get through 1/4 of our plates, and I felt very guilty for my boyfriend who ended up over-paying on food that hardly seemed edible. This place does try, I can tell that they do, but they focus way too much on the quantity of their servings and how quickly they hit your table. There needs to be more time spent on actually preparing the food. I'm not sure how other people are able to stomach this place, but maybe there are things on the menu that these 5-star reviewers have ordered that are easy to cook and edible. Hopefully new customers will have better luck than we did. I really did want to like this local place. I did.

It is so nice to be able to write a positive review about a place that seemed too good to be true the first time. Once again it was a completely positive experience. Once again I left with one of their great biscuits. The variety of hot sauce is also something that they should be lauded for.

These size portions are more dangerous to Americans than Iraq or Afghanistan. creative menu for a very middle America type place. I had Hillbilly Hash, which was ok. Absolutely enormous portions. My girl friend had the Farmer's something. I would avoid it. The strawberry waffle was really good.

I'm a local and have grown up going to Laurie's since it was Chica's. Great homestyle breakfast. Huge portions and friendly staff. Get the basics: Pancakes, French Toast, Omelettes and Hillbilly Heap are my usual pics. Hot chocolate is always a kid pleaser as it comes piled high with whipped cream and covered in sprinkles. Every hot sauce you could dream of is on the table. Was vegan for four years and they always catered to me - oats are cooked in water. Laurie is there most days and it's always nice to meet the owner of an establishment.

The food was great. Laurie her self was short and rude this morning, but the guy who seats and busses was awesome. Their berry infused butter was excellent and so where the pancakes, they do not lack blueberries if you order blueberries. The orange juice is nothing to write home about. The prices are great, I will come back next time I visit long beach.

When I arrived this was a cozy sweet quiet place to recharge (I arrived after the early weekend breakfast crowd.) Dress warm and be prepared mentally to wait outside the front door under an awning to be seated. That's how they roll. Lots of choices on the menu seafood, meat, and vegetarian options. It feels happy inside, lots of yellow, even their coffee cups are happy colors. The service was amazing. I was comfortable in my seat. There's plenty of parking. There's lots of natural light. Prices are reasonable. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand every day THEY SERVE GRITS! It's family owned and operated and has been for the darn close to 20 years it's been in existence.

Go here if you are extremely hungry and don't mind a wait in line sometimes. The food is delicious and plentiful (you won't need to eat lunch, unless it's oyster shooters further up the coast in Nahcotta) and worth waiting for. It's a family place and you know how kids can get after a stack of pancakes with a pint or so of syrup on it...a tad wild. Go with the flow, though, you will not be disappointed my friends.

Huge Fan! If you are visiting Long Beach WA check it out for a HUGE breakfast. Be prepared to wait outside for seating. This place is pretty busy. It is very casual dining, the interior reminded me of hanging out in my grandma's kitchen. The portions were huge... I mean the biscuits are bigger than a grown mans fist. Breakfast for two could easily feed four... the price was very reasonable. The quick bread was yummy- I enjoyed the locally grown cranberries :) the hash browns were crispy and delicious. ((I also suggest a nice walk on the beach to work off the calories before you enjoy your leftovers for lunch))

Nice place!
