This place has great ambiance. The decorating is top notch, and instantly transports you away from the often kitschy shops in Pullman. The food is fantastic; I recommend the carbonara because they put bacon in it that they SMOKE THEMSELVES! This bacon is incredible, and available for purchase by the pound (do it, just don't cook it in strips. This isn't your breakfast bacon, and better suited to candying/baking/cooking). Go here, not the Birch and Barley, if you want a quality date night!

If I was grading on a scale that just included the Palouse area, it'd be a 5. If I'm taking into account all the places I've been, it's a 3. Why it stands out in the area: nice setting (far from the usual college joint, it actually has some atmosphere), nicer food. Why it doesn't have more stars: In terms of what I'm paying, I'd expect more in either quantity or presentation. Example: I ordered scallops here. I got 2 scallops on the small side with barely anything else. At places in Seattle and Portland, I'll get better scallops that will come with a nice side of potatoes and vegetables. Sure, I guess it's nice to just have the option of scallops in a hole like Pullman. But the price is off putting for what I receive. Often times when I dine at a high end restaurant, the portions are smaller and I walk away feeling like I ate just the right amount. At Black Cypress I just walk away hungry still.

Visiting from California to get my son settled back in Pullman for school and have been wanting to try Black Cypress since my last visit. Fortunately for us, they were open and had seating available on this visit. Who knew that Pullman would have a restaurant of this caliber? We dined early for dinner so there was no need for a 5:30 reservation on a non-WSU major event weekend, but I would highly recommend you make reservations if you are coming in for Mom's Weekend or a like event (thus the reason we have never been able to get in on previous visits). Service/Atmosphere: excellent; very attentive service. Upscale interior---something you would find dining in a big city. Appetizer/Main: We ordered the Daily Bread, lamb chops and Pomodoro with meatballs. Daily Bread was good, but the crostini was a little to crunchy for my taste. Lamb chops were excellent and I would definitely order again---very generous serving that could easily feed two. My son had the Pomodoro, he thought it was very good and polished it off along with the rest of my plate. Dessert: Although we were full from dinner, we did manage to order two desserts. The server was nice enough do a half order for me for the Bread Pudding and Huckleberry Ice Cream and my son ordered the Brownie and Ice Cream...both were very good. Overall impression: In my opinion, the prices were very reasonable for the quality and quantity of food you get. We had an enjoyable and more than satisfying dinner and it was refreshing to not eat the standard college town type of fair---pizza, burgers, etc. I've had many great meals ruined by bad service, but I have to say that I am thoroughly impressed with Black Cypress' menu and service. I look forward to dining here again on my next visit to Pullman!

Like a lone seedling of good-to-near-great food along Main Street in Pullman swaddled in 5-star Yelp reviews and likeable Instagram photo mojo, the Black Cypress stands atop a foodie pedestal on the Palouse. This is "the" restaurant if this is "the" place. I was lucky enough to enjoy two meals in two weeks. The first was fabulous. The second was good. I'm now a Black Cypress fan. All meals at The Black Cypress should begin with the Black Cypress Daily Bread Basket with grilled Panhandle Artisan Bakery (Moscow, ID) bread and Seasonal Bruschetta. Sure, it's just bread, but you like bread, remember? A co-worker and a friendly server recommended the Roasted Chicken ($22) with Bread Salad, Seasonal Greens, and a Herb Pan Jus. To say I was skeptical about "gettin' chicken" as a winner when the menu features Lamb Chops, Ribeye Steak, and more would be a complete understatement. Luckily, I didn't trust my instinct and did trust the server's sincere smile. She was right. The Roasted Chicken was a tender flavor victor worthy of boasting about and should be renamed to Boasted Chicken. If I hadn't come back a week later and trusted my adventuresome Yelp instincts by ordering the Daily Skewer special, The Black Cypress would surely of been 5 stars. Unfortunately, the daily kabob was over-spiced, super-fatty cuts of Beef that had me leaving half on the plate. Bummer. For both meals, dessert was shared and the stars were a pair of sweet pairs featuring Ice Cream. Number one on my list (and yours) has to be the Bread Pudding & local-favorite Huckleberry Ice Cream. A close second was a soft Brownie with Marshmallow & Ice Cream. Can't decide? Get both and share ... or not. The Black Cypress is worthy of its status in Pullman as "the" restaurant on Main Street for good-to-near-great food.

We went in for our anniversary thinking it would be fun to get all dressed up and have a nice dinner. After asking a few co-workers where we should go, this was at the top of the list. We were very excited to try this local restaurant for our special occasion. The food was fairly good and our server was friendly, but I was unfortunately a little disappointed. We were sat in a corner booth/table across from the bar. The pew I was sitting on was uncomfortable and the table was very small. It was in a weird in-between weather period so the a/c wasn't on and it was very stuffy. Our appetizer came out with our food which packed our little table to the point that we barley had room for our drinks. Additionally, my husband's salad never made it out of the kitchen, which worked out since we wouldn't have anywhere to put it on the now covered tabletop. We ended up just canceling it so the server comped us a desert...which we also heard her do for 3 other tables that were near us. The drinks were great, our appetizer was just OK, and the food was good, but the desert we received was a lukewarm brownie with melted ice cream, so it didn't make much of an impact. Not sure we'll be back but guess we can say we tried it.

Going there right now before I leave pullman. The chicken dinner is beyond awesome. I can't leave town without tasting that chicken one more time. There are other great looking things on the menu, but have to wait until next time to taste.

The drinks here are amazing, the food is good but I've had a few misses. The daily bread, skewer, and chicken are all on point. The few specials I've had missed the mark a bit (the sturgeon was my least favorite, maybe I just don't like sturgeon). Staff is awesome though especially the bartenders who love to chat booze with you. My favorite place for a good meal in Pullman.

Spent our anniversary dinner here and it was very worth it. Great service. Great food. Great atmosphere. Will be back next time we are in Pullman. Get the smores dessert and you won't regret it!

Definitely one of the best place in Pullman. Have been here for dinner and lunch and each time leaving very satisfied with my meal, the service and cocktail selection. I've been told their menu selection changes every few months, possibly to go with the season? Either way, the presentation of each item we ordered was tempting and the food was amazing! Our favorite from our last visit, and a must order again, was the clam cooked with their own bacon and kale. For cocktail selection, the Recital and Arab Spring satisfied our thirst for refreshing, delicious and unique.

Love their app menu! Get the steamer clams with carbonara. Also get the milk and honey drink. If you are not a bourbon fan, this is the one to get.

Being a poor college student, its very rare I get a chance to dine at such a nice restaurant and not break the bank. My boyfriend and I came a few months ago as a special treat and we can't wait to come back! Our experience was amazing. We started with specialty cocktails that were really good and had a lot of flavor and nice special touches on garnishes. We had the daily bread appetizer and it was heavenly. We got 2 entrees, the pork of the day and the rack of lamb and we were both so very satisfied with our meals. My pork was cooked perfectly and was so flavorful and juicy I'm salivating just thinking about it now! And my boyfriends lamb was cooked perfect as well, with a flavorful sauce and tzatiki. We finished our night with dessert, a panna cotta to die for. Overall, this is one of the nicest restaurants in Pullman and definitely worth a visit at least once. We can't wait to go again for my birthday!

As far as dining on the Palouse goes, the Black Cypress is in a class of its own. The food is over-the-top, the bartenders could hold their own against even Portland's most mustachioed hipster cocktail artisans, and the service ranges from very good to great. I don't know what black magic goes into their brownie with home-made marshmallow sauce and Fredinand's ice-cream, but whatever the cost to your soul and arteries, it's worth it. Just about every time we manage to get a baby-sitter for the evening, we tell ourselves that we should try someplace new, but inevitably end up at Black Cypress. Even if we do manage to convince ourselves to try something else, we seem to end up there for dessert. We hosted my wife's office holiday party there this year, and they did a fine job accommodating about 10 of us alongside a full house. If I could make one wish, it'd be for a bit more variety in terms of vegetarian options on the menu, but they are quite happy to leave the (apparently delicious) bacon off anything it can reasonably be left out of.

Amazing food! Tiny portions but you wont leave hungry because the flavors of the food have you slowly savoring every single bite. I've only been here twice because it's more in the "special occasion" price range for me but so worth it!

Pullman! Holy )($*#! I never knew you had it in you! As a Greek, I am beyond picky when it comes to mediterranean food so I was hesitant to try Black Cypress. Thank god I did. The food is AMAZING. Quite honestly, some of the best food I've had - mediterranean or not - across the country. In Pullman of all places! I really wish they would open a location in Austin, so I could go there more often. AMAZING FOOD. Great ambiance. Pleasant staff. 100 stars to Black Cypress!

So I was really excited to try this place because it looked classy inside and I had heard good things. Pullman has the lamest restaurants so I was hoping this would be a place we would like and could come back to frequently. The appetizer was really good and I would probably have been happy with just that. We got toast with different spreads and the spreads were delicious. I got one of the daily specials which was a spaghetti dish and when I asked what was in it when ordering the waiter failed to mention that there was beef in it, and I don't eat beef. I ate around it and it was just meh... bland, flavorless-something I could have made better at home. We got dessert which was tasty and somewhat made up for my mediocre entree. A for the appetizers, wine price and dessert. I probably won't be back for a while ago cause it just wasn't that great and the food was overpriced for what it was. If I went back I would hang out at the bar and try some of their other cocktails. Just another Pullman restaurant.

Who would of thought that in Pullman Washington there would be such a gem. I'm now sold on this small college town. The Black Cypress was spectacular! The service was amazing and the food unbelievable. I started with a simple salad of beets and radish accented with pistachios blue cheese and parsley , along with a nice Washington Cabernet. I sat at the bar and witnessed an amazing staff do work. Very professional and cordial. If only I could drink the cocktails the bartenders were producing. Then my perfectly simple lamb chops arrived with kale and garbanzo. The chops were tender and perfectly cooked, I like mine medium. Simplicity at its best! The bartender recommended the bread pudding for dessert, although I was already in gastro heaven I had to go for the total experience. The bread pudding itself was actually light not too sweet and the caramel sauce and the huckleberry ice cream did justice to the entire presentation. No americano/ espresso here but It didn't matter. I'm glad my child will be attending WSU for a few years I know I'll be back!

We've been traveling for 1 1/2 weeks to Portland, down the Columbia/Snake rivers and now in Pullman. This was the best meal we have had in our travels! I had the ribeye steak and husband had the fish of the day, halibut. Both were fantastic! We also tried the bread appetizer of the night and the brownie dessert! WOW TO ALL OF IT. Topped it off with a bottle of wine from Walla Walla. What better way to celebrate a birthday! Would definitely stop here again when in the neighborhood for a really good meal! Thank you!

It isn't fair to say we went to the Palouse from Seattle just to eat at Black Cypress but that was what we were both looking forward to. It was Mother's weekend at WSU and the place was much busier than it had been the first time we visited. The noise level, however, was the only indicator of the crowd as the wait times, attention from the servers, quality of preparation and presentation were again outstanding. Serving here must be the plum job in Pullman and they can pick and choose their employees. We had all new servers this time and continued the trend of extensive knowledge base of the menu and wine list with not a hint of hesitancy about questions or willingness to give us special attention when asked for. Looking around, that seemed the norm, so 5 stars there. We started with the Daily Bread [that was a given] and got 4 x 1/4 inch thick, crisped, Italian bread slices with 1 oz. baked pumpkin paste and an ounce of tart but creamy goat cheese. I couldn't have come up with that combo with a 6 month head start but they complimented each other well. We paired those with wines by the glass after advice from our server. We followed with the clams again and nothing has changed including their excellence. Again we got 16 fresh steamers, with none that weren't open, in white wine with bacon and kale accents and soft bread wedges. Someone is paying attention to detail here. Next we got the daily fish, 6 oz. of a lightly poached halibut with fresh tomato and onion salsa and jasmine rice and the daily pork, a 14 oz. chop that was light pink at the bone and great flavor. It was plated with 1/2 cup creamy mash potatoes and a piquant fine sliced cabbage slaw. Desserts were a 2 inch cube of bread pudding with a single scoop of huckleberry ice-cream and a lemon pound cake that was dense enough to seem like a tort with a tart, fresh lemon, cream and fresh raspberries. The Bread pudding was also very compact in texture and was accompanied by a rich caramel sauce. Neither seemed too heavy and both would have been diminished without the pairings of the sauces. 5 stars for the food. As we reviewed our bill we noticed a "good customer discount" of the price of a glass of premium wine. Can I give 6 stars?

Service was spectacular, food was great. Our server couldn't be better, he was as good or better than the high end restaurants in Seattle. Everyone in our group enjoyed their food. Halibut, carbonara, roasted chicken, shish kabob and rib eye are all worth coming back for

Most reviews for this restaurant comment on the wonderful food available at Black Cypress which I think goes without saying. But it's not just the great food and incredible atmosphere that make it so special. I can confidently say I have never experienced any restaurant quite like Black Cypress. Nick, the owner, has such an attention to customer service and shows a genuine passion for his customers AND for the community. Black Cypress will only get more awesome as a result.

This place is soooo good! A little spendy but you get what you pay for. Everytime I go I get appetizer, meal, dessert and a drink. The daily bread is phenomenal. The carbonara pasta and lamb chops are Devine and the bread pudding with huckleberry ice cream is so good!!! I love this place!!

The music sucks, but the food is awesome! That's the review in a nutshell. PROS: * Nice upscale cafe-style ambience. * Food was AWESOME. I got the carbonara, which had great bacon. * My wife's ribeye was delicious. I'm sure based on the price that they used choice grade, but it was tender and tasted like it was prime grade. Not sure if they dry-age their steaks but it tasted like it. Whatever they did, it worked! CON: * OMGosh, the music was terrible. It was some crappy techno mix, and it was a little loud and didn't fit the ambiance, unless the workers were also baristas by day and had weird lip piercings or something. In other words, it was trendy, but the music was trying to hard to be a little too techno-hipster.

My expectation (based on reviews) were higher than the results. This is a good restaurant, the service was excellent, I had lamb ordered medium, it arrived on the edge to edge pinker and quite cool. Taste was excellent, the beet salad was very good and the kale feta bean side dish was very good. My dining partners both had the "layered" halibut that sounded like it was going to be a taste sensation but in the end was...halibut. It was cooked just right. The environment was acceptable, a very deep humming sound kept coming from the kitchen, a bit of a distraction. The carbonara was good, although smaller chunks of pork belly and a bit more sauce would have made it very good. I would return, based on the service and the selection of other dishes that piqued my interest. Had the lamb been nailed I would have given the restaurant 4 stars, the others based on the halibut would have stuck with a good 3 stars. Price is a bit high for the quality.

  • David W.

The food was a nice treat, especially the grilled meats. The daily bread was not what I expected. I had in mind soft bread with a crunchy crust, or hot pitas, but it was more of a toasted cracker. It was good, but just not expected. The salmon mousse was smooth and nice. The lamb chops were tasty, just right with a crispy layer and soft core. We had the cheese plate that was good, including the nuts in honey. The Caesar salad was also good, especially with the bacon chunks, though I might skip it next time since the other dishes all had nice greens. The pork skewer was good and salty. The special pasta was cooked to perfection, but I might try the carbonera next time. I think the roasted chicken was a favorite with a nice au jus on tasty kale greens. The crispy skin with moist meat was done just right. Even the carafe of house red was a nice touch and good value. Our waitress is an English major at WSU and was really friendly and added to the pleasant evening.

Delicious food and a comfortable, yet upscale environment. The daily bread is always fantastic, as are the main entrees. You'll typically only see a dozen or so entree options, including the specials, but they're all fantastic. I've been here five or six times and everything from the food to the service has been above reproach.

Reasonably priced for the quality of food, but on the pricy end of the spectrum for Pullman. Look for a dish with the bacon!

Holy cow! Am I in Pullman? This is not the Pullman I remember. Delicious food. Attentive service. Could easily seamlessly slide into Seattle and fit right in. Beautiful atmosphere. Glad we made a reservation a few weeks prior to our visit. This place is packed.

This is by far the best restaurant in Pullman and the surrounding area. I have been to Black Cypress probably five times and will continue to return. This restaurant consistently delivers top notch food and over the top service. Management is visible, friendly and welcoming and truly appreciates each customer. If you think the prices are high go to a big city order the same food and you will not get the same quality as Black Cypress. A great product should demand a greater price and I will gladly pay for that anytime.

The Black Cypress is the type of restaurant that I wish I had down the street from me. Within walking distance preferably. The drinks are strong and fantastic. I am a huge fan of the French 75. The food is modern American grill style using locally sourced ingredients and a farm style vibe. This is the kind of place that is impossible to have a bad meal. And at a reasonable price.

Great service, ambiance, and food. First time here we had yummy starter of pita with hummus, lamb kebab meal, and complimentary organic goat cheese dessert! It was all very delicious. Returned here again for dinner, desserts, and drinks. One of my favorite places in Pullman!

Can you say "Oh my God?!" This restaurant is a gem. Came here from Los Angeles for Dad's Weekend and our son suggested this place for dinner. We could not have been happier. First of all our waitress was on it. She explained the specials to a "t" and knew her wines. Our meals were fantastic and desserts even better. I can't imagine enjoying a meal more. This place is awesome.

First of all, you have to get the bacon here!! I don't mean just order an appetizer or entree that has the bacon in it.. but actually buy some. They make their own bacon here and it is absolutely delicious. Hands down, the best bacon I have ever had. Now that I live on the westside, I am really craving some and wish it was only ten minutes away like it was when I lived in Pullman. It is rich, flavorful and gets super crispy when you fry it up. Try some!! You won't regret it. Second, I will be honest and say that this place is a little pricey for the quality. If you are familiar with Sangria in Moscow, it is basically the same unique food but Sangria has a much better price for the quality. I am glad we went there to try out the food and discovered the bacon, but we never went back. When we went there it was very smokey in the restaurant and consumed any other aromas in the place. But the service was great. The staff were really friendly and packaged up some bacon for us at a half a pound rather than their regular one pound packages. Overall, it was a good restaurant but not the oh my god best I have ever been to. It speaks for itself that we went there once, tried it and haven't been back since. If you don't want to go for the food, GO FOR THE BACON! :) Its THAT good.

The food here... it's just... OMG! The roast chicken, the lamb chops, the skewers... the drink menu... the service. Everything is amazing. I live in Kirkland now and dream about this place! Fortunately, we are moving to Pullman. I plan on spending all of my money here!

This place is a stand out for Pullman. As far as I've seen, probably the nicest resturant in the area. contrary to some other reviews, I felt the portions were good size, it is on the pricey side (for Pullman) but not too out of line for the quality of food. The service was OK, not great, but adequate. If you're ok with noisy/younger/bar atmosphere then sit on the left side. Next time I'll ask for the right side, it seemed a bit quieter. As expected a glass of wine was overpriced. They do have a pretty good wine slection though. I had the shish kabob: the been was slightly overcooked at medium-well, the server did not ask how I wanted the meat cooked. we also had a couple different pasta dishes which were very good. They also have some unsual mixed drinks that were very good. We'll be going back again for sure on our next visit to Pullman. GO COUGS!

  • Pauline F.

A quaint little restaurant that can easily be missed in downtown Pullman. I think the food is decent, but the portions are a bit skimpy. The food is nothing too special, and considering the prices, I don't think it's really worth it for the average college student. The appetizer dip was pretty good though and probably the one worth mentioning. All in all, it is more of a date place or a small group of close friends due to the ambiance.

Several people in town recommended this restaurant and I am so glad we took their advice! Our amazing experience started with a very welcoming and accommodating host, who shifted some folks around to get us a table, and continued through with some of the best service I've had in a restaurant in a long time. Our waitress was poised, knowledgeable, and happy to say 'yes' to our every request - to split a salad and entree, and even pouring me a half-glass of wine to finish off my meal. And the food was amazing - simple but delicious preparations, cooked perfectly, and in ideal portions. The Black Cypress will be a regular meal for me every time I visit Pullman, which after this I hope to be often!

If you're looking for top of the line food and ambiance, look no further than The Black Cypress. My favorite restaurant in Pullman hands down. The cypriot sandwiches, baked chicken, and bread pudding are all incredibly delicious. The pasta is amazing too, very fresh and flavorful. Soft lighting, cool music, and helpful staff make Black Cypress a romantic dinner spot that is sure to please. Highly recommended!!

Food is varied and interesting...e.g., celery salt in a drink? Sure, they'll do it and make it work. The staff was very nice to us, offering to seat us in a more "quiet" spot after I requested it. However, this restaurant is so noisy--period--that it was not ideal for a romantic date night with my boyfriend. So, if you'd like some food with someone and not be able to hear what they say, this is the perfect spot for you.

Really nice, upscale food in this college town. Nice cocktail list, some of their own (I had the Arab Spring) that are stylish and innovative. The avgolemono soup and the chicken were particularly memorable. Kind of disappointing to be seated at the worst table in the place despite them not being full up, and we had a reservation. Avoid the table behind the column and next to the bathrooms. They almost got a star knocked off for that. Nice to be in a grown-up environment--I'm not a WSU alum and can only take so much of that scene, if you know what I mean.

My wife and I went here for dinner and it was excellent. From the waiter, the food, and the atmosphere, everything was great. The last time I was there they overcooked my steak but this time it was cooked perfectly. The waiter was very friendly and knowledgeable. We ordered apps(daily bread), entrees(steak, pasta, and pork), and desserts (brownie and bread pudding) and it was all great. My friend we were with paid for the meal so I don't know how much it was but doing the mental math I'd have to say it was worth every penny! Enjoy.

There is something about finding a fine dining restaurant in an out of the way place that makes it even more delightful than when you find it in NYC or SF. Our friend whom we were visiting described it as the best place in Pullman and I could believe that. It's a place that would be at home in a hip neighborhood in Seattle or San Francisco. It's not super fancy or stuffy combining high quality food with a rustic style. We ordered a large part of the menu starting with the cheese plate, olives and Black Cypress Dips which was a trio of common Mediterranean dips. There was clearly a mediterranean inspiration but nothing so unusual to scare the folks a small eastern Washington village. The cheese plate was good but surprisingly only had one local cheese but the bread which may be made in house was really good for the cheese course and through out the meal. The dips were good as were the olives. For entrees the French Spouse had the pasta pomodoro, I had the ribeye and our friend had the roast chicken. All three are simple dishes but the way they were cooked showed a trained culinary skill and the chicken was especially well prepared with moist meat and a super crispy flavourful skin. My steak was cooked beautifully medium rare if not very well trimmed which I personally don't mind as the fat adds flavour. It was even served very traditionally with a compound butter on top. The quality, size and cost was far better than what I've had at steak houses in San Francisco and Seattle. The French Spouse's pasta was the most disappointing. It tasted good but was pretty average and the pasta was on the wrong side of al dente. We finished with some locally made ice cream and chocolate tuile cookies. The decor is pretty standard modern rustic with lots of repurposed items like glass jar lights, burlap swagged on the ceiling and lots of wood. The service was good although our server did seem a little nervous at times but he offered good wine suggestions and let our friend try several before making her selections. If you find yourself in Pullman and need a good meal this is the one place that you wouldn't be disappointed in.

Best place to eat in Pullman, WA. At least I'm almost sure. Get something with bacon in it-- you can never go wrong with bacon and their bacon is obscenely good. My suggestion: their carbonara (comes with bread on the side...FTW!). Also it's not really spendy. Me gusta.

WOW. I mean really. And in Pullman, WA? Cougar country? This was very, very unexpected. This restaurant would do well in anywhere, really well. The food is terrific. Just dynamite. My boyfriend and I went here for a late Valentines dinner and we were both floored by this place. They do a fabulous job putting unexpected flavors together and without going overboard. The menu is so well put together. The pork salad special that we tried was incredible, just the right amount of salt and citrus. The dips were amazing- light and flavorful tzatziki sauce and their spicy roasted garlic spread was killer! The lamb was at a perfect medium and the grilled romaine and garbanzo side was delicious. The scallops we had were so good I could not stop talking about them. I'm still drooling over the slaw that they had garnished them with. Their drink selection is great, mixing the classics (which are all prepared perfectly) with the trends in drinks. The Manhattan was divine and the two specialty cocktails we shared were playful and savory and went very, very well with the food. Service was great, knowledgeable servers and very friendly staff all around. And the best part? It was priced extremely well! I will definitely be coming back every time I'm in the area.

Pricey for the quality and the amount of food you get from this restaurant. If you come on a Monday, its half off appetizers and order the "daily bread". I had the lamb and if I were to come back, I would try out the pork chops. Overall, service was excellent and you definitely have to try the bacon. I recommend that you make reservations ahead of time because it gets relatively busy.

Wow... This restaurant surprised and delighted me. Of course, I found it using Yelp (Thank you again and again and again Yelp!!!!) The atmosphere was very urban and hip. Yet, it remained warm and friendly. There was no pretense from the waitstaff and the bartender was one of the nicest I have ever encountered. The most surprising thing for me was that my dining companion and I were in a smallish town in eastern Washington. This establishment single-handedly blew my prejudices out the window. I have to admit that I thought this trip would be a lot of comfort food and greasy spoon, but The Black Cypress brought sophistication that is usually found in a larger city. Pretty darn awesome! The food was wonderful. I had the parpardelle pasta. It was the daily special and it had a sherry cream sauce. I really enjoyed it. The deserts were also fanatic and fresh and amazing. The best part of the entire meal was the mint fluff that came with the brownine dessert. The only sad bit is that I live so far away from this place - that I can't make it a regular eating occurrence.

Family tradition dictates that those whose birthday it is selects where they want to eat for that day. For my son's 14 birthday we drove 3 hours just to fulfill that tradition. This should justify the rating. Would have been 5 stars but when I asked for sausage to be added to my pasta dish told first they wouldn't do it and only after I insisted that the waitstaff check I was informed they would for $7.00. Sorry but it wasn't worth it.

Went there tonight, and don't get me wrong, the food was good as was the atmosphere. However, I left still hungry and my check was over $50. I don't have a problem paying a lot for food, but typically when you charge over 20 dollars a plate for something, you half expect to leave with leftovers, or at least full. In this case, I ordered the shish kabobs, and they did taste great, but I finished them in 5 minutes and that was it. The side dishes were a minimum serving of some mediterranean vegetables and that's it. It doesn't take a lot to fill me up, I eat the least out of all my friends and family, but after this dinner date, I had to go to the McDonalds drive through for two reasons, (1) I was still starving & (2) After dropping 50 dollars for food that didn't fill me up, i was reluctant to spend anymore pointless money. All in all, 2 stars, one for the good taste of the food and one for the atmosphere. The atmosphere was great though, actually felt like I was in a downtown of a big city and not in a college town for the hour that I was there.

My husband and I absolutely love this place. In order of experience: Ambience: Urban rustic -- wood, canvas, glass jar lighting, blackboard paint. Warm and inviting. Customer service: Staff is friendly and attentive, but not overly-chipper or invasive. We visited on a Monday night -- it was packed, but our food came out quickly and our server was very efficient. Food: Outstanding! I highly recommend the lamb chops, but you can't go wrong with anything on this menu.

This is the newest addition to Main Street owned and operated by the same folks who brought Nectar (delightful) to Moscow right across the boarder. First of all, this place was going to have to be amazing for me to get over the fact they replaced Cooky's, the only place in town to get some Eastern European food. But then again, that's not their fault. The Black Cyprus is dimly lit with a small bar and several tables. They need to get some carpeting for the hardwood floors because sound just reverberates in the place, making it way too loud. Also, the backs of the benches on the wall jut out at an angle, making it extremely uncomfortable to sit for an extended period of time. The beer menu is decent. They have four or five taps from regional breweries that you wouldn't typically run into otherwise. The wine list is extensive, but I'm not a wine guy. The menu is small, weird and expensive. They offer several appetizers, four salads, four spaghetti dishes and four meat dishes. Everything is over $10, with the meat dishes being $20 give or take. Everything seems "heavy" except for the salad options. I'm surprised there was no fish on the menu. Given the fact they serve four spaghetti dishes and no other pasta, you'd think they make their own, right? Nope. It's just out of a box, yet they charge over $10 for a small bowl of it. Okay, I'm done griping. On to the good points. The appetizers of the edamame and cheese sandwiches (featuring plum jam) were both delicious. The spaghetti, though too expensive for not-home-made, did have a delicious pesto topping that would take some time to assemble myself. So though the food is good, it's a bit overpriced, and the menu needs tweaked. But for a restaurant so young, it is off to a good start. It just needs some time for trial and error.

The food we received was very well prepared and flavorful but we had order a crimini soup that they ran out of and my father ordered tap rootbeer and we were brought a can of Mug rootbeer instead because that also was gone. Wish the waitress would have just informed us better. Also call ahead they were packed.

This place has a charming and intimate atmosphere, friendly wait staff, and a decent wine list. The food is okay, the steamed mussels that I tried were overcooked and grainy.

Small, ever-changing menu focused on fresh, seasonal ingredients. Good wine list. Great, inventive desserts. Daily specials. Black Cypress is everything you should want in a restaurant, and another great dining option in the Moscow Pullman area. I've has a couple of meals there now and everything has been great. Highly recommended. Contrary to some misinformation here on Yelp, Black Cypress was opened by Nectar's form head chef and is not owned by the same people. It is, however, of the same caliber. Pullman residents should delight that they have a place of their own that's as good as Nectar, and Moscow residents now have a reason to make the trip to Pullman a little more often.

fantastic! we went here on my birthday, and i could not have asked for a better meal. i expect a place like this to be crowded on a saturday night. the only problem was that reservations seem to be more of a suggestion here. we were not the only ones waiting for a table for over 30 minutes. but, a seat at the bar, a good cocktail, and the the wait was pleasant. we ordered the little sandwiches and dips as appetizers. sandwich was alright. not as excited as everyone else was about them. the dip however, were great. the garlic was my favorite, but the pairing of that wit a vegetable and tzatziki dip was amazing. as an entree, i had the lamb chops with seasonal veggies. i really don't know what to say about this dish. it was the best i have ever had as far as lamb. it tasted like it was smothered in rosemary. salted perfectly and cooked with brilliance. the dessert was a lemon poppyseed cake which seemed to be baked in a cast-iron skillet, similar to a cornbread. it was a light dessert and subtle in flavor. one setback was no espresso. i know that espresso isn't a popular drink around here, but i feel like every restaurant at this level of expertise should have the ability to make a nice doppio as an after meal drink. we are going back again soon. real soon. probably this week. beautiful setting, great drinks, awesome food, wonderful service. it's a great escape from what is otherwise a dismal food scene.

The good: The food is generally excellent. The staff are friendly and efficient. The ambiance is good though a little loud at times. The bad: A reservation made one week in advance, to accommodate four visiting scientists from out of state, was not honored. We were held up first by the front door, then by the restrooms. It turns out that they had seated another party for early dinner at our table and though the party was finished with their food they were lingering over drinks. So after 45 minutes after our reservation, we left while the next round of drinks was going around. Do not trust that your reservation will be honored!

I'm living in Berkeley, CA in the middle of the gourmet ghetto, and I miss The Black Cypress. The food, the people, the environment--it all works to make a place that I genuinely look forward to visiting again if I ever make it back to the Palouse.

Outstanding food, great service, and an urban ambience that is delightful to find in Pullman. The bar is great: interesting rotating taps and unique home-grown drink options. My only slight complaint is a dearth of vegetarian options. One of 2 or 3 "great options for a night out" in Pullman.

Sure one can tout praises of great dining in downtown New York, Boston, how 'bout Cape Town on a sultry evening, but Pullman is a rural community with many of the amenities of the city without the stop lights and elevators. You might expect a Black Angus, but a Black Cypress? It's quaint, friendly and the food? Excellent. The wine list is exceptional. The service is first-class. Pullman has many good restaurants. This one's in the top tier.

My boyfriend and I visited the Black Cypress last week for our 4-year anniversary. We are both in college, so it was a bit of a splurge for us. I was nervous at first, I admit. There was no need, however: it was worth EVERY penny! The decor is very interesting, with a polished concrete floor and burlap bags billowing across the ceiling like rough sails. Mirrors all over the walls make the restaurant appear larger, and give you a glimpse into the kitchen where the magic happens. It nicely spans the gap between romantic dinner spot and happening place to have dinner with friends or family. I ordered the lamb chops, and he ordered sirloin shish kebabs. I had a Spanish red wine (sorry, can't remember the name!) and he had local brewery Paradise Creek's Dirty Blonde Ale. It was a bit of a wait for our food, but the restaurant was quite busy. When the food did come, however... "Delicious" doesn't begin to cover it. The sirloin was cooked to absolute perfection (on our way out the back door to our car, the bags of charcoal sitting in the hall confirmed our suspicions about its preparation). The vegetables were obviously very fresh, and his salad had a wonderful, buttery kind of dressing on it that perfectly complemented the shish kebabs. My lamb was also fantastic! It had a distinct Mediterranean flavor, and was tender and juicy. It went well with the Spanish red the waitress so kindly recommended. We were also brought two small rolls to go with our dinner; I looked at them and was disappointed, being a big fan of bread. However, the taste alone was enough to make up for the tiny amount! Sweet, warm and fluffy, they were clearly fresh-baked and likely from scratch. What looked like sea salt was sprinkled sparingly across the top, giving it a wonderful contrast. If I ever go back here, I'll be asking for more of this amazing bread! We got out with a bill of about $75, including drinks and tip. Steep for us, but I know in many cities this would be unheard of for a meal of this quality! I have heard that a few restaurants have come and gone from this spot, but I sincerely hope that the Black Cypress is here to stay. I will be back as soon as I can afford to! :)

The food, drink, service, and ambiance at The Black Cypress is unmatched in the Moscow/Pullman area, there is simply no other restaurant that offers such wonderful, locally sourced food, expertly prepared, and delivered by a more fun and knowledgeable crew of servers and bartenders. I have been fortunate to dine at The Black Cypress quite a few times and I have enjoyed nearly all of the menu items. The stand out of all the entrees is the Roasted Chicken. It is always exquisitely seasoned and cooked perfectly with the skin crispy while the meat stays tender and delicious. The bar at The Black Cypress is just as impressive as the kitchen, serving up some of the finest craft cocktails I have ever tasted. Their is a cocktail for everyone there, but if your like me and enjoy whiskey cocktails I would go for the Milk and Honey (bourbon, honey, ginger, lemon, bitters) a very balanced drink with great flavors. If you are in the Moscow/Pullman area looking for a fantastic dining experience go to The Black Cypress.

Holy Dinah! In Vancouver, BC the bona-fide restaurant/foody city where I live, the meal(s) that I had at Black Cypress would have cost me at least twice (++) as much! I can't say enough. I ate here twice in a three-day stay. Corey, our waiter extraordinare was amazing....the food and wine--focusing on local fare--blew our mind. I actually called foody friends in Canada when we were leaving the restaurant to tell them that when we return for our Walla Walla wine tour, we meet here.....honestly, can't say enough! Food = amazing. Washington wine = superb. Service = exemplary. A gem in Pullman. I'll be back.

This place is improving... The staff seems a little friendlier than they were before, perhaps realizing that this isn't New York and there's no reason to be stuffy. The Monday happy hour is a good deal for appetizers, half off, but would be even better if it included a drink special (isn't that kind of the definition of a happy hour?). My previous comments about the decor still stand, it seems a little on the cheap side. But they seem to have moved the tables around a little bit, and this time it didn't feel like I could eat off the plates at the table next to us. Also, it seemed better ventilated, I didn't have to wash my clothes of the wood smoke smell in there that has been a problem since opening. The food is good, and for the first time I tried a special, braised pork with garbanzos, and it was good, maybe 7/10 (not enough of the sauce). I like the redesigned drink menu, and the bartender is excellent, and makes the best and most creative drinks in Pullman. Missing a 4th star because the service is still deathly slow, and we were only brought bread after the entrees were already on the table... We sat for about 30 minutes with nothing to eat or drink while waiting. However, this is still the most unique, trendiest place to dine in Pullman.

This restaurant features a limited menu with excellent food. The prices are very reasonable, and the wine list is extensive, featuring quality wines. It is not cheap, but also, it is not overly expensive. Ask for a window seat!

Great food, great wine, and great service. I like when a waitress/ waiter is attentive but still leaves you alone enough to enjoy your meal and this place was perfect. Shortcake for dessert however wasn't that impressive and it was very crowded and noisy. This place is great however too popular for its small location, you guys need to move into somewhere larger!

Wandered into Black Cypress on a cold night. The atmosphere is ok, not exactly cozy, but almost there. The seating uncomfortable, which is common in many fine dining restaurants on the Palouse. We did receive good service for dinner. No complaints there. My major complaint is that nearly all the meat ordered at our table was overcooked. The New York steak was cooked to order medium rare and came out just fine. However, the lamb chops were ordered rare and did not come out rare. The pork chop was cooked to oblivion. I suppose we could have sent it all back, but when it's nearly the whole table, it just doesn't seem worth it. Everything was seasoned with herbs and salt, and the portions were huge. Just be specific on how you'd like your meat cooked. Since when is a lamb rib chop cooked medium in a fine dining restaurant?

We were VERY happy with our meal here. Everything from the service to the cocktails to the food was spot-on. You can tell they put a lot of thought into the food here. I'll be honest and say that we weren't expecting a great meal. I shouldn't go into any restaurant feeling that way, but when you're in a small town exploring the fine dining scene, it's hard to be optimistic. However, I'm happy to say that this place exceeded expectations by a long shot. This place has an incredible cocktail menu. A huge selection of house cocktails that, as far as we could tell, were well-executed. We really enjoyed our drinks at least. I had the Rhubaro (Zucca Amaro, rhubarb bitters, lemon, soda, rocks) because I love anything with rhubarb in it. But I would wager that even if you don't like rhubarb you'll probably love this drink. Well-balanced and delicious. We ordered the hummus appetizer, which in hindsight was nothing special. Yup, that's hummus! But also, there was nothing wrong with it. It was just okay. The main course, however, was really delicious. I had salmon. It was cooked perfectly, and the roasted vegetables on the plate were also cooked perfectly. My husband had lamb with a wheat berry salad. The lamb was delicious, but the wheat berry salad was awesome! It was very bright and flavorful, and I put it on my list of things to try to recreate at home. Also, it would be wrong not to mention the dinner rolls here. They are insanely good. The most tender dinner rolls I have ever had. I know it sounds silly to rave about dinner rolls, but these taste like something your dream grandmother made. So incredibly delicious. I highly recommend this place if you're in town. It's more than worth a stop.

Such good food, great ambiance, and superb service. The house smoked bacon was like little jewels of yumminess that made its way into many dishes. We had seven different dishes from pasta to steak to scallops, each cooked perfectly. The relaxed, comfy atmosphere made for a perfect dining experience.

Amazing food. This restaurant never fails to disappoint. The one downside is that the restaurant can be a little smoky and hazy from their in-house smoker along with the low levels of light. The service is great too! For vegetarians, I definitely recommend the grilled tofu, it is literally the best I have ever had. It's paired with a great sauce to bring out the tofu's grilled flavors! Definitely would recommend making reservations, since the restaurant fills up quickly!

4.5 stars. In my opinion, Black Cyprus is the best food in the Pullman/Moscow area. Some of the dishes may sound ordinary, but the flavors are so well done. Try the chicken or lamb chops, you wont regret it. Normally I think chicken is bland and I seldom order it in a restaurant, but here it is so, so good. Bread pudding is also a must.

It's fairly expensive, but to have a high-end dining option on the Palouse is a great thing. As an example of the high prices, I had a very good seafood chowder for $18(!) that included the aforementioned, wondrous bacon. If you're into the "mixology" style of alcoholic beverages, you'll really love the bar. Again, expensive ($8 per drink), but worth it for a nice night out.

The last time this Yelper gave out the 5-star rating was to El Gaucho's in Tacoma - it is now time again ring the bell 5 times! This place rocks - in every way! If you find yourself in Pullman at a Cougar game, mom's weekend or graduation (hopefully) you need to dine here - you might just close your eyes and think that you're actually in Seattle or San Francisco cuz these folks know what they are doing! We had the Lamb Chops (the best I've EVER had), the mahi mahi & the biggest baddest (this means really good) pork chop you've seen in a long time. The wine list is a great representation of Washington wines at fairly reasonable prices. The place is a bit small but nicely done - make reservation if you are going on the weekends and way ahead of time if you are in town for any event. The service was great, the food was great, the wine was great and the place is great!!!

The best restaurant I've ever been, hands down. A couple of friends introduced the place to me and my husband, I ended up having scallops. Here's the thing... I don't like scallops. And yet, it tasted amazing! The place is cramped tight (and therefore very loud once it fills up) and the service was a little slow, but the food is so good you just don't mind the wait. My husband and I decided to take his parents there as a treat, this time I had the lamb chops and sampled a bit of the mahi mahi soup and the grilled tofu. I'm usually a pretty dainty eater when I'm in public, but I was literally gnawing on the bones, that's how outright amazing the lamb was! They also prelude your meal with a warm roll, it's soft and has buttery goodness baked right in... I need to get a job here and steal their recipe! We all shared bites of everything, and I've yet to sample a thing on the menu that didn't taste absolutely incredible. We probably won't go here but for once or twice a year due to the high prices, but their food is worth every penny. I can't recommend this little place enough.

By far the best and only place for excellent food, drink, and service in Pullman. Quality of food is as good as any SF, Chicago, or NYC place. Bartenders Cory, Rachel, and Graham are tops!

  • Amanda L.

Really great food with a fine dining vibe that you find in SF. Kind of weird considering it's Pullman! Price of the food is also the equivalent of a nice place in SF ($15 - $25), but the lamb and the steak were delicious! Service the night we went was insanely slow, and there were some issues with the doneness of the steaks, but they were really accommodating and everything tasted great. If you're willing to pony up, it's got some great tasting food.

What an awesome, unexpected dining experience. Who would of thought Pullman would be home of the best Greek cuisine I've ever had? Great service- the waitress was very knowledgeable about the food and drink selections. Fantastic food. Probably the best lamb I've ever had. Not gamy at all, cooked to perfectly to a nice medium. Tzatziki it was served with was great, though a little watery. But this is a small complaint with food this good. I mean, even the dinner roll was amazing. Ambiance is great, would be a nice place for a first date. Definitely coming back if I am ever in Pullman again.

My husband and I have been going to Black Cypress for a while now and after yesterday's visit, I knew I had to share my praise of this restaurant with others who may find themselves visiting Pullman, WA in the future. I've seen businesses come and go along Pullman's Main Street and with Black Cypress' amazing cuisine, selection of wines and beers, and cozy ambiance, I have a feeling they are here to stay. In the past we've enjoyed their fresh dips with rustic bread (the skordalia is my fav), soya beans, and their souvlaki. The tempranillo they carry is an all time favorite and I can never seem to pick anything other than the lamb chops, which comes with a different side every time. They also have a menu of unique and hard to find cocktails, such as the Sazerac. Yesterday (03/22/11) was our 2nd wedding anniversary ( tog. 9 years total) and we couldn't ask for a better experience dining out in the Palouse. We had 2 appetizers, half price before 7pm, 2 beers, entrees, and dessert. I had the lamb chops and my husband ordered the rib eye steak (the only place that has been able to cook it as requested). A huge 'Thank You' to the courteous staff. They did an excellent job with a full restaurant.

This is by far the best restaurant in Pullman. Their menu is small, and changes seasonally. I had a steak that was really good, and the side dish of potato salad with mustard seeds was outstanding. Their desserts are good as well. Their food is better than Swilly's, and is as good as Nectar (over in Moscow).

Another fantastic meal during the recent Dad's Weekend 2012. My daughter and I were delighted with great beers to start off, an excellent Bread/Dip appetizer, crisp/diverse salads with original dressings, bacon/saute'd onion/pepper/herb pasta that was perfectly done to al dente' quality, superb local Merlot wine, and a creme brule'/bread putting dessert that was literally to die for. Everything offered was thru great service from the staff. And, all for $85 for the two of us, unbelievable(!).... I live in the Bay Area, CA, and this restaurant would easily fit into the local scene down here as a very competent offering in a highly competitive environment, at likely double the price we paid in Pullman.. Very highly recommended!!....

Black Cypress is a solid 4/5 restaurant that occasionally even jumps up to a 5/5. Service has always been friendly and caring. The ribeye is the best steak in town, the lamb is outstanding, and the rolls are the best free thing you have ever tasted. The pasta dishes are very fairly priced given their quality. The best thing about this place is it has options for high-rollers and people on a budget looking for a nice restaurant. There's something for every price range and the quality never waivers. For me, it is a true "must visit" every time I go back.

Best restaurant in Pullman/Moscow, hands down, bar none. Went here with my family the night before graduation. My boyfriend's boss kept raving and ravingabout this place, and I knew I wanted to save it for a special night. I went in and tried to make reservations for Friday, but being that is was graduation weekend, they were full. However, someone pulled some strings and we got a table for Friday. Upon entering the restaurant, we were informed that the group at our table were still dining, and then we were led to the back to a small waiting area, where the server gave us a pretty cool drink list. He brought us our drinks, kept apologizing for the delay (which was nice), and even brought out some free appetizers of olives. After about a 15-minute wait, we were seated at our table and...wow. The atmosphere of this place is truly spectacular. It is warm, and cozy, and definitely un-Pullman in the very best way. As other reviewers have said, this place would do well ANYWHERE, not just in a small town. We ordered the bacon and clams for appetizers, and ordered several drinks. All was AMAZING. Since our reservations were at 8:30, some of the specials were already sold out, which was a little dissapointment. However, we were all quite happy with what we ordered. The pasta (kobe or something like that) that I ordered was DELICIOUS, the sauce is truly outstanding, and everyone else raved about their dish as well. I sampled some of the carbonara and it was excellent as well. Prices are pretty good- for a party of four, with two carafes of wine and several other drinks, two appetizers, and two steak dishes and two pasta dishes, the total only came to $130! We were amazed. We recieved desserts on the house, and they were excellent- they tasted just as great as they looked. Overall, I'm sad that I waited till graduation to experience this place, because it was AMAZING! Don't pass up an opportunity to go here. A+!

Great food and service. Moderate price for the quality and presentation. One star off for the tiny table and excessive noise.

I love the atmosphere at Black Cypress. Their food is always amazing and perfectly prepared. They even offer some gluten free options in their pastas that are very delicious. They have a large drink menu and great service, as well. I try to visit here often.

I'm in Pullman several times a year and have my favorite haunts. I told my Buddy I was in the mood for a steak and he took me here. It don' look like no Steak House I've ever seen. (Can't judge a book...) Had the NY. Perfect preparation and a very good cut. You will pay close to double for this in metro areas. Staff was dead-on attentive without being intrusive - real art these days. Extensive libation selection. Just. Absolutely. Fabulous. Swilley's has some competition!
