Great location and view, if you aren't scared of golf balls. I really enjoyed this place.

I have been hesitant to return to the Caluctta Grill as our previous experiences have not been great, but..... Last week we had a business dinner there (who can resist the view) and were pleasantly surprised by a new menu and great food choices. The salads, appetizers and entrees were all delicious. There wasn't a bad meal for our party of 9. Glad to see that things have improved as I do enjoy going there for a bite and to enjoy the scenery!

Best view of Seattle from the Eastside! The food has gone downhill. You will have to sacrifice the quality of the food, for the spectacular sunset. It is hard to justify this, but each night the guests at Newcastle are serenaded by a man playing the bagpipes, you can't miss something like this!

With family visiting from all over the country, we decided that the Calcutta Grill would be the perfect destination for a special dinner. The weather cooperated brilliantly and we were seated promptly. There was some miscommunication with our waitress shortly after we arrived (we wanted to do a special presentation for our guests) that resulted in a delay in taking our dinner order. I can understand a miscommunication. Drink orders came out fairly promplty but one drink never arrived, another was wrong (Scotch rocks isn't a hard drink to fix) and one was undrinkable. When we finally found someone (NOT our original waitress) to take our order, it took what seemed like forever for him to return to actually take our order. The place was NOT that busy. It took 25 minutes for our order to come out, as reported by the manager. Yes, we had 14 in our group but it seems unbelievable that a group of 14 would throw them off their game. My order was wrong (how hard is it to really keep dressing on the side?) but I was starving at that point (we are talking at least two hours after our arrival.) The managers and assistant managers were apologetic but it truly seemed like they didn't care that the whole thing was a disaster. If they had told us that the chef had quit or died or SOMETHING, we would have been sympathetic. If they didn't want us there, why did they take and CONFIRM our reservation. We are trying to figure out what happened. Next time, I'm headed for Salty's. Sadly.

HOLY WOW, the view alone is worth the price of a meal and a drive from anywhere. Located on the grounds of the Golf Club at Newcastle, there's no membership required to dine, but you better make reservations. British colonial style with plenty of wicker and wood, but not overdone, and fabulous food based on fresh Northwest items. Go on a Friday or Saturday night in the summer so you don't miss the bagpiper who walks up over a little hill in front of the restaurant and truly transports you to a magical place as the sun goes down over the vista of the Olympics, Seattle, Bellevue and Lake Washington. What a way to end a day.

View was amazing and I left with a full stomach. Started with the ahi poke and prawn bruschetta, both delicious; however, the avocado in the poke was nowhere near ripe and was very hard which bothered me even though the flavor of the tuna was perfect. The prawns came whole on the bruschetta which was my favorite dish of the night! For my entree I had the local rockfish which had a mustardy bite and yummy lobster brussel sprouts and buttery potatoes underneath. I made room for the salted caramel cheesecake which was so good, but I could do without the thick chocolate paste on top of the cheesecake. Other than the unripe avocado, everything was fantastic!

This is the restaurant located on the golf course with amazing views of Seattle from inside and outside (patio). I came for Saturday brunch and had the crab Benedict, Newcastle sunrise and finished with a coffee. Food was solid, cocktail was strong and delicious and coffee was okay. Service was good. The Benedict came with a choron sauce, which I had never tried before. It's basically a hollandaise sauce with tomato purée. The eggs were a perfect poach. The accompanying potatoes needed the ketchup, otherwise a bit bland. Not a restaurant with memorable food and slightly higher cost (~$40) but will definitely come back for the views! Free parking and located inside the same building as the golf shop on first floor and pub and bridal suite (lots of weddings happen onsite) on the second floor. We stuck around for miniature golf - so much fun!

This place is beautiful and has a great view, however, the food is terrible. I come here with my family because they like the view, but every time I have come here I am so underwhelmed with the food! I have gotten 5-6 different dishes from here and every time they are meh. Not worth it for the price. There are much better restaurants out there for the same price or cheaper. Also, the staff always seems to be overwhelmed, maybe hire more people?

Good food, great service! My wife and I stopped in for dessert on Valentine's Day. We were able to sit right down at a table near the bar, despite the dining area being completely booked. We ordered a Creme Brûlée and a Chocolate Torte. The Creme was exceptional, but I found the torte to be on the dry side. Thank goodness it was draped in dark chocolate ganache!

  • Aaron B.

Great views! Good service. Don't order the $37 steak. They can't cook it the way you want it. Was rather disappointed with it. By the time the server came it was just too late -- nor did she ask for input.

For the view and location alone I give this place four stars! We love bringing out of town guests here. For golf or for drinks and dinner a must see while visiting the area or living here. The setting is beautiful and the view, on a clear day, is to die for! We live not to far from here and love to sit out on the patio on sunny days, have a snack and watch the sunset. They have a good happy hour daily from 3-5 for discounts on food and drinks. We usually get salads and salmon chowder. This is also a good please to stop for breakfast on the weekends. Very family oriented.

Great food, great view, exceptional service! We were there for lunch. I had to leave the table to nurse and of course my food came out while I was away. The waitress somehow knew I was nursing and told my husband she would have the kitchen make me a fresh batch of food when I was done nursing! That was really considerate of her! I would love to go back for brunch! On a side note, an employee saw me looking for a place to nurse, I was going to do it on a bench in a hallway (with a cover of course) and she said I could use the locker room upstairs that also had a changing table!

  • Jeff H.

Calcutta Grill is my favorite spot on the Eastside for breakfast. A summer time waffle on the patio with that view is just the ticket; especially when accompanied by a mimosa or two. Based on my trips, service has been a little on the slow side, but when sitting in the sunshine on a warm summer morning, is that really a problem? To review, order the waffle, get your bacon crispy, imbibe a mimosa or bloody mary, remember the service will be a tad slower than you'd expect; then relax with a great view and dynamite food.

It was a nice scenic drive to get up to the golf club, and the view on the way there was quite amazing. The restaurant had a nice classic steakhouse feel to it, and all the staff I interacted with were friendly and courteous. Four of us met up at the restaurant for brunch, and we were seated by huge windows, from which we could see an amazing view of Seattle. We ordered Cougar Mountain Scramble, China Creek Omelet, Prime Rib Dip, and Dungeness Crab Benedict (for me!!). It was unfortunate that the only kind of tea they had was Tazo, which is OK, but definitely not the best. I wish they had some local organic tea. However, my food was excellent. It took awhile for all our food to come out. However, when the food finally arrived at our table, the spread was quite amazing. I thought I was getting a Dungeness crab *cake* Benedict, but it came with Dungeness crab meat, which was actually better! I ask for the choron sauce on the side, so I was able to control how much sauce I wanted on my eggs benny. The sauce was a bit gritty but still pretty tasty. I wish the home fries could have been a bit crispier and hotter, but they were delicious with the sauce as well. FYI: Choron sauce is basically Béarnaise sauce + tomato paste. Everything tastes better with butter (= Béarnaise). Everyone else's food looks pretty awesome as well. (I really got to try those omelettes!!) The brunch was definitely on a pricier side, but I did enjoy the food, the view, and the company!

There were 13 empty tables there and we waited 35mins to be seated. They really need to improving their kitchen and customer service!

Go for the views but not for the service! Located at the Newcastle Golf Course the views are spectacular and on a warm sunny evening expect the place to be crazy busy. We've been there twice in the last two weeks(week nights, not Friday or Saturday) and both times, the food is good, views outragous and the wait staff sucks. Both times we were seated and within minutes our wait person shows up, asks if we want drinks, and then we never see them or the drinks. for what seems like hours (actually 25 minutes) Last night our wait person came back, without drinks and asked if we were ready to order food.We asked about our drinks, she went to find out and another 15 minuteds went by before she returned with our drinks. And we didn't see her the entire time waiting on other tables. The table next to us, got three of four dinners and the fourth plate didn't come out until they went looking for help and the first three dinners were eaten. Same wait person. Last week, we asked the waiter if it was an exceptionally busy night and he said no, the club runs golf events everyday during the summer and they are always busy. ( I know you always need a reservation) So if they know they are going to be so busy why don't they have more bartenders, wait staff, kitchen staff? Seems like the wait staff is poorly trained, and poorly managed. As I'm re- reading my review I see I reviewed last year with almost the same issues. SERVICE! Some things never change

  • Jane D.

Favorite things on the menu: cheese platter, lamb burger, beef dip, any drink from the bar and the coffee makes me want to stay for the sunset. True, the view is amazing as everyone says, but even when it's foggy the landscaping can suffice. It's just a great place to be.

I had been meaning to go to this place for months before actually taking the plunge last weekend. I say that because I had time to really think about the preconceived notions of how it would be, mostly shaped from Yelp reviews. And it's always nice when a place exceeds those notions! The primary motivation to come, truth be told was to find a decent brunch spot near home without having to go to Bellevue, Issaquah, etc... That and my wife woke up craving french toast. After seeing their cherry brioche french toast in pictures, we were sold. It's a real fancy place, for starters. Part of the swanky Newcastle Golf Club, it struck me as the quintessential rich guy club house. Fortunately, the staff's friendly demeanor quickly quelled any fears of pretentiousness. Simply put, the service is TOP notch. Couple of errors in execution of the orders (forgot the anchovies on the caesar salad and the almond butter on the french toast) but overall professional and friendly. Just a classy experience with an exceptional view. I'd take back out of town relatives but also lie about having a membership there to show how much I've made it in life.

  • Jennifer Y.

Here's what to expect: * Easy parking * Beautiful view (you can walk around and take pictures) * Warm service (they do remember you!) * Complementary fruit with brunch * Casual atmosphere (no need to dress up too much) * Basic brunch fare with a Pacific Northwest twist (i.e. items named after NW places) * View trumps food * View comes with a price * Free coffee refills (so sit back & enjoy the view more) * Did I mention the view was really great? Things we ordered (all of which we'll likely order again) * Cougar Mountain Scramble * French Toast * Dungeness Crab Benedict * Classic Benedict * Prime Rib Dip

    (4)
  • Ben M.

Wow and wow again. Most places it is either the view OR the food. It feels rare to find a place with a beautiful view of Seattle and Bellevue and amazing food, but this place did it. The Mediterranean Platter has perfectly toasted pita and the calamari appetizer was delicious, not over greasy or breaded. Dinner for me was the local rib meat, I was surprised when the waiter brought my friend a knife for his steak and none for me. Well it's because I didn't need it. Perfectly cooked. Wife had the chicken pasta, just the right al dente. I will be going here again for sure.

  • Kirsten O.

I'm not really sure why this place has gotten so many stars. We're neighbors of the golf course we keep trying to give this place a chance but literally every time something (more like 20 things) goes wrong. The service always sucks. The food is always off, or like last time, not what we ordered at all. Last time we went we were seriously shocked at how horrible it was! Should be better if you're paying that much. Only reason I'm not giving it one star is because of the amazing view and ambience of the place. So much potential!

  • Kurt K.

Absolutely amazing views on a clear day. Well worth the drive up. I've only eaten at the bar and I haven't been disappointed. The sliders are excellent! Service as expected at this higher end establishment. Good selection of beer and some special drinks.

    (4)
  • Michael P.

The drive up is well worth it for the view and the food! The wait staff appears very well trained and courteous. I will admit I was not super impressed with their chowder or the salmon my friend ordered last time I was there, but every other time I've been I am impressed with the food. (Maybe not the best seafood supplier? Hmm...) I recently went for my birthday and had a great lunch enjoying the view in the sparsely occupied restaurant. They even gave me a brownie a la mode on the house! The decor is impeccable and high-end but relaxed, they do have an event space that I would imagine to be a great place for weddings, rehearsal dinners, or any large group.

We went there for mother's day.. at 60 bucks a piece fully loaded it's a bit overpriced.. The sushi was the standard conveyor belt stuff, mostly yellow tail. Also the fruit bar was mostly the cheap melon selection found in a mid range hotel breakfast buffet. The waiter staff 3 of them were relatively slow. they served iced tea in plastic cups, and we repeatedly had to ask for refills of coffee, tea, and sodas. The wait staff was also slow to bus dishes to the point where I built my own stack and hauled them to the busing station. we've gone there for 10 years.. I don't think my party of 15 will be back. that being said. it's a great view and a facility. I had a similar experience with dinner at the grill too.

The restraunt has gorgeous views, but the food isnt so great. I live in the neighborhood and ordered a meal with fries to go, and when i got home after picking it up, there were only 5 fries in the box!!! The meal was also small and undercooked. Dont order your food to go. Other than that, the restaurant is great

I hate to say it but when I eat steak, I compare it to Longhorn steakhouse. I think they make amazing steaks. Now: where to begin...my family lives close to this golf course and frequents the restaurant. When I came to visit, I was impressed by the inside. It's tasteful and welcoming. The hostess was very nice and accommodating. We got a big table in the back for the 6 of us. Our server was attentative and nice. You're allowed to bring your own bottle of wine but they charge you. Which is understandable. If you want, you can order from the pub menu in the restaurant which is cool. The steak was okay even though they mixed up my order. I asked for medium rare and received medium well. The prices are okay but maybe not worth it.

    (3)
  • Theo B.

The food was good and view was outstanding. It is an upscale restaurant without the upscale attitude. You can just wear whatever. I saw people in T-shirts and shorts for dinner. It is part of the Golf course. Service is about average, it's not upscale service.

  • Joe H.

So... very very good burger (I had their Calcutta burger) but very very bad service. So it gets a 3 star from me. okay okay... so I was dressed like a homeless but my dad wasn't. Food was great. Kind of hard to eat since the burger so tall but great sauce, perfectly cooked meat, great presentation, etc. Yum fries (hand-cut it appeared). My dad ordered American breakfast? He seemed to have enjoyed his. Service was slow and not friendly. Will I go back? Probably not on my own.

  • Chris W.

This place is amazing! We live about fifteen minutes away so we go for or five times a year. Beautiful setting. Spectacular views. Great food. They used to have a cigar bar but the smoking laws changed that. Perfect place to go and have dinner or cocktails. One thing to not miss: during the summer they have a guy who plays the bagpipes every night at dusk. Great way to end the day.

    (5)
  • Kamara B.

We had the eggs benedict and an omlette. Service is excellent, and the view is probably worth coming on it's own. The food was just OK though.

Kobe Beef Sliders are legit. The best Kobe sliders I've had thus far and great service. I'm going back again, again and again.

    (5)
  • Nurit L.

Overpriced breakfast for what you get. Food quality is of a cheap diner. Eggs in the Eggs Benedict and the Scramble were overcooked, bland, and cold. Only good thing is the view

    (2)
  • Paul G.

The draw for this place is the view not the food. On a sunny day you can see the down town Seattle to the Olympic Mountains. The food is expensive and largely forgettable and the service is adequate but nothing great. So if you want great food, go elsewhere. If you want a great view, this is the place.

    (2)
  • Sarah D.

You know. I am starting to think that the really high marks are for the atmosphere and the experience of dining somewhere so beautiful. The golf club really is a gorgeous location. The food however, is just not worth it. I have been 4 times and given higher reviews based on what others at my table have said about their meal. I am starting to realize that my family just likes going somewhere nice. It's not really about the food there. There is nothing amazing about anything I have seen coming out of the kitchen and no one has felt like their meal was as spectacular as it should be for the price. Once again they fall very short of the mark for vegetarian options. I had the cheese plate. Wow how exciting. The desserts were universally tasteless. The service was painfully slow - forever to get someone to come to the table initially and beverage refills were almost nill. I will come back for cocktails upstairs at the Wooly Toad but forget Calcutta.

    (2)
  • Tracy T.

Spectacular view and great brunch. We had no problem with the speed of service; they checked on us frequently and then left us alone to sip our coffee and chat once the plates were cleared.

Great food and service. Nice view. Only been for breakfast but always consistently good.

we came here for lunch and the place was empty. we were a bit on the early side, but it was still empty. i have a soft spot for french dips, so that's the way i rolled. solid, but not outstanding. didn't get a chance for dessert or anything so this wasn't a memorable experience or anything. staff was quick and efficient. the view is the best thing about cg.

  • Ruben H.

Did not like the service, the very small menu and I did I mention the service??? We waited nearly 10 minutes at our table before being helped and was passed by several wait staff before I finally flagged down the manger. To his credit he made sure an apology was issued and to no fault of his own it didn't help the service from our waiter. The food was average though priced as amazing. Totally willing to give it another try because the Golf Club is awesome.

    (2)
  • Deepali K.

Great views! But if you have a waitress called Deborah, make sure you leave. She is the worst waitress I have had and I have eaten at many, many places across the states! She gives this place a really really bad name!

    (3)
  • Julian H.

It's been awhile since we ate here but the other day I sat in the bar while waiting for a golf buddy and watched the NCAA tournament. Same impression as before: nice atmosphere, dear prices, and average service. Dark wood and brass are nice, but in this setting and for these prices I expect a really exceptional level of service and comfort that we've never experienced. If you want to sit in a bar, the lounge upstairs (The Wooly Toad) offers the same or better service, and food out of the same kitchen, a better view, a more relaxed atmosphere and bigger TVs.

I'm kinda in love with the Calcutta Grill. I think I could stay here for hours at any time of day and just drift away in the serenity of it all. Come for Sunday Brunch. The daytime view is breath taking. Daylight streams in their large windows with an uninstructed view of Seattle and the valley. On a clear day you can see the mountains. On a cloudy day you can see the clouds kiss the skyline. The brunch is exquisite. Their Newcastle Sunrise is light, tasty, and full of alcohol. Their Calcutta Burger is cooked to perfection and a meal unto itself. The burger is the size of my face! Try the Eggs Benedict. They smother their eggs with hollandaise sauce. Yet it isn't over powering. The Canadian bacon retains its salty goodness. The eggs perfectly poached. Their little potatoes are divine. Seriously I could probably just eat a plate of these. Come during the evening. Like now. Sure, you're not going to get the view except for your own twinkling lights of the city in the distance, but being that it's fall you may be the only people there. The dining room feels extra cozy with the dim lighting and candle light against the dark woods. I can't recommend the Prime Rib enough. I hunger just thinking of it. Their calamari is good, but the aioli sauce really makes it. Skip the Blackened Salmon Cesar Salad. The lettuce was crunchy, croutons were great, but I couldn't taste the cheese and the salmon was over cooked. Now for dessert - their sorbet is magnificent. Their chocolate decadence is amazing if you like chocolate. If you don't then steal the candied pears while your dining company scarfs the chocolate down. Seriously they need to add those pears to something else. Their peach cobbler - yummy! Not too much ice cream, not too much fruit, a delicate balance of sugar and deliciousness. The servers are great. I've always had a pleasant experience with them. So, come out to Calcutta Grill. You and your belly will be pleased.

Three stars, mostly for the view. The food was also delicious but there was not much there. I was disappointed that the price range listed here was less than what both mine and my my date's meals. I also think that their was only one waiter there when we went. There were a handful of other people delivering plates but just one lady taking orders. It took awhile to get her attention or get things we asked for. I would probably go back with a group for an event, but not for a date night.

  • Alex S.

The service here has been consistently horrible for years. We decided to give it another try after hitting a bucket of balls on Sunday. Nothing has changed. We sat at the bar and was completely ignored by the bartender. There were only two other patrons sitting at the bar and the bartender walked right passed us without even acknowledging our presence. We live nearby and love the view, so we keep revisiting it, hoping that the service will have improved. I see other other reviewers have had similar experiences, so I don't understand why the owners don't make the necessary changes.

  • Kate L.

The view is spectacular. Period. Even on a hazy day, it is so nice. I have been going to the Calcutta for years. It's obviously not the place you'd go for a birthday dinner or for your friend who is a major foodie. But it's the place you will go for a laid back lunch with some friends, brunch with your in-laws, or casual (not intimate) drinks at sunset with your friends. Food: Good. Most of the time. There can be a variation depending on what you eat. Breakfast foods are mostly all good. There are not many options (I'd say about 9-10 real breakfast foods) since their breakfast buffet option has been taken away on the weekends. They also offer their lunch choices at this time. Lunch options are very good actually. I recommend the sandwiches (the Reuben, prime rib dip) and a Bloody Mary (huge in portion and tasty!). Dinner is a mixed bag depending on each time. However, for the most recent trip, the seafood Ciopinno and chicken pasta we had were excellent. The meat in the burger was a bit dry, while other times it had been better. Ambience: Quiet for breakfast-lunch. Noisier ambience in the evening due to wedding receptions on the weekends and tipsy customers enjoying the nice views from the tables. The bagpipe guy who comes and plays on the course in the evenings is a plus!

I have had both lunch and dinner several times at this restaurant and for the most part both the food and service have been fine. My wife and I had dinner here again last evening and the weather was outstanding, which make the spectacular view even better. Our server was very prompt and took our drink order along with the Carpaccio appetizer. After the drinks arrived she took our dinner order and we both choose the Dungeness crab stuffed King salmon. It came on a bed of spinach and some roasted fingerling potato's. The entrées arrived in a reasonable time and everything was delicious. I will admit to being a salmon snob and I know how to cook it quite well at home. This dish was some of the most outstanding salmon I've had in any restaurant. It was prepared perfectly and there was considerable crab stuffing, not just a little dab. Since my wife and I love salmon and crab, this was a perfect meal along with the great view.

  • Mauricio S.

Scheduled a reservation on a Saturday night and the wait staff was very accommodating even though we arrived 15 minutes late, they were able to seat us immediately. The menu is not huge, but has enough to satisfy the pickiest of eaters. The New York steak was as good as any other steakhouse around the area. Their mediterranean platter was amazing, their pita bread was unlike any I've had, but what makes this place an experience is the VIEW. There is no better view (from an establishment) in the Eastside. On a clear day you can see all the way to Seattle. It is specially beautiful during the night.

SPECTACULAR VIEW. Probably one of the best around Seattle area, its absolutely worth the drive to the golf course in Newcastle!!! Calcutta Grill is inside The Newcastle Golf Club. I've been here twice, once for a wedding brunch and once for Easter brunch. The food doesn't have much to offer. Its easily forgettable. However, you go to Calcutta Grill for the serenity, not so much for your palate! The brunch I've had has had its usual course of pancakes, sausage, omletes, bacon, even some sushi, salad and desserts but again nothing that stood out! In fact, one of our servers was downright rude. However, they had an excellent manager who apologized, took care of the situation and compensated for the drink they messed up on. Due to its location, this place would be an EXCELLENT PLACE TO HOLD A PARTY! It would also be a perfect HAPPY HR restaurant to sip on a drink on their deck while overlooking Bellevue and Seattle skyline!!!

I'm not a big breakfast person. Not a fan of eggs, ham, sausages in the morning.. but I think if breakfast was like calcutta's.. i might just become one! FOOD: Quality & Quanity at such reasonable prices! I was actually read to drop quite the heavy dollar bill there, but breakfast prices were all reasonable at $11-$15 Mmm I got the American Breakfast.. has eggs, sausage, potatoes, fruits.. and they were all delicious! My bf got the french toast. 3 huge slices.. and they were delectable as well. Was so HAPPYFULL! :D Service: Friendly, quick and excellent. I actually customed my eggs to be mixed with mushrooms. They must have really liked me, as they dind't charge me extra for it. And mmm They were delicious! Atmosphere: The view is spectacular. Mountains with Backdrop of Seattle. It really is breath taking.. I was thinking that.. when the time comes.. maybe I should get married here! Since its so beautiful, the food is delicious, and staff is super friend.. maybe the price will be reasonable as well? ;) haha But yes.. the eggs! mmm If breakfast was like this.. I would be a happyfull breakfast person :D This place is a.. Take your date, or your parents to impress them place ;D

When we first moved here, several years ago, I would have given this place 4 stars. The steaks were better than Daniel's and the desserts were just fabulous. Then the dessert chef left. Then they changed the menu. Then the buffet brunch disappeared. Then quality started it's slow, downward trend. The view is great, especially with the outdoor seating, and the bar food is decent. We haven't been back there in months and really don't have any plans to return. Too expensive a price for just atmosphere when the food cannot live up to the billing. I'd much rather spend that amount of money, elsewhere.

I read several reviews that rated the view as fabulous but the food as just OK or hit and miss. Our dinner was great!! The view was perfect. The service was excellent. I am not sure who these people are that had disappointing meals or service. Everytime we want to thrill out of towners we always take them to Calcutta. Have to admit some of the reviews made me nervous, however everything we had as perfect-- prime rib, salmon, salmon ceaser, salmon chowder, salads! And Bagpiper iced the cake. Memorable evening .

This place is supposed to be a fine-dining experience, but I have honestly experienced better food and better service at a small, family-owned restaurant. Service- servers seem to be overworked, they look tired and are often a little snippy. We asked if there was any way we could get a seat by the window and the host said that the seats were reserved. There were 3 tables that were opened and throughout our evening we didn't see anyone take those tables. The food is overpriced for what you get. The lobster is embarrassingly and obviously frozen. The Au Jus sauce tasted like it came from a can or jar. My brother had the best dish which was the burger. But even the burger was hard to order because they told us they "typically" don't serve bar food in the dining room. Even so the whole restaurant's atmosphere switches from fine-dining to bar & lounge. We sat next to a table of golfers and as soon as the rest of their family members/friends came, they were extremely loud, using profound language. I think I will only come back with friends and head to the bar for their burgers.

Good food, moderate prices, A+ service, STUNNING VIEW! Live bag-pipe player from May-September during sunset. Daily happy hour from 3pm-7pm. QUICKTIP: Outdoor seating is a MUST during sunny days, so come early! Hang out at the bar and wait if you have to.

The view is amazing there, as everyone has said. The waffles were good, the omelettes were good. My main negative is that we sat outside on the patio, and it was a bit chilly since we were seated in the shade of the building (the seats in the sun were taken). We had a reservation, but had unlucky timing on what seats were available when we arrived. When one of the seats in the sun was freed around 5 minutes in, we asked the Waiter if we could please be moved to the sun seat. We were told (not very politely), that they have a policy that no one can move into the sun once they're seated, as that is "unfair" to those who have a reservation. I said we had a reservation, they said that's their policy. I never considered they'd actually refuse our ask to move to the empty table (which was empty for maybe 10 minutes before someone was seated in it). It seems like a policy gone pretty wrong, and made our breakfast/lunch a bit uncomfortable for the ladies at the table who were chilled.

The service is beyond excellent here. The servers are attenttive and they really do care about their patrons. We came for my friend's bday for brunch on a gorgeous day, If you prefer sweets for brunch get the Hawaiian Sweet Bread French Toast the thick cut bacon goes perfect with every bite! My cousin and I shared the french toast w the American breakfast w/ the home fries. Since it was my friends bday we also got a complimentary dessert, winning! Overall it was a great brunch w/ an awesome view of the golf course, I almost felt like I was a member of the Newcastle Golf Club!

Management at work wanted to take me out for a "bye-bye" lunch with the team since I got a promotion to another team. It ended up to be a choice of where I wanted to go. I decided on a different restaurant until one of my coworkers showed me a list of Dine around Seattle places on the eastside and gave me 3 to choose from. I chose The Calcutta Grill. Since it's located at the Newcastle Golf Course.. the day was perfect with a gorgeous view of Bellevue and Seattle. And even more perfect was that the hostess sat our party of 7 right next to the big window so we can see everything. It was so pretty! We all decided to choose our lunch from the 3 course for $15 menu. The choices was pretty hard to choose from but I decided on the smoked duck salad (app), pulled short rib sandwich w/ fries (entree), and the chocolate tower with candied hazelnuts (dessert). The service was really quick at the beginning and very informative on when our food was coming. We each got our first and second course on good timing until the last course for dessert... We had all finished our entree waiting for the dessert and we had prob waited for a good 30 mins for it to come and the waitress was nice to keep informing us when it will come and apologizing for the delay. We finally was served the dessert and everything was delicious except for maybe the pulled short rib sandwich which had good flavor but a tad bit on the salty side. Overall great food and service and spectacular view! I was fortunate to have a great team to want to take me out to wish me a grand 'goodbye'. :)

I had high hopes for this place, as it was a candidate for my wedding venue. Unfortunately, dinner was way overpriced for the crappy food. We sat at the patio. The view was gorgeous!!! The crab cakes appetizer was small, and not crispy. It looked and tasted boring. Next, I had halibut while my fiance had the prime rib. The halibut ($34!) was not very fresh, was way under-seasoned, and the pea puree tasted too umm green. My fiance's prime rib ($28) was under-seasoned as well. It wasn't a very good cut of meat (had a lot of gristle). The side of mash potato that it came with was bland. Come here for the view, not the food..

Enjoy a rare sunny day by having lunch with a view. The food is ok but unremarkable. The overall ambience, however, makes this place worth about 3.5 - 4 stars..

My girlfriend reserved a special table for my birthday on June 11. The service was extremely poor and we had to wait 10 minutes to flag down a waiter who then took our drink orders. This waiter was one of the worse I have encountered in all my Seattle dining experiences. The halibut was overcooked and so small I thought we were served a child's portion. The scallops were bland and the crab cakes had no flavor. The waiter told us the crabs were Connecticut dungeness (do not exist on the Atlantic ocean). The view was good. I felt so bad for my girlfriend since she wanted to have a special romantic evening. I would never go back.

I'm sure everyone has mentioned it already, but THE VIEW, THE VIEW, THE VIEW! While you are munching away on the delectable delicacies offered at the grill, you have a view of the beautiful golf course as well as the Space Needle and the rest of Seattle. The service is top notch. The waiters and waitresses are always on their feet and very friendly. The food is always great! Hot off the grill, every meal is fresh and enough to satisfy your stomach, but not overdo it. There is a bar kind of separated from the rest of the quiet dining area. Very classy place.

I've been here twice for happy hour...the view from up here is AMAZING. I just wish they had more outdoor seating available for happy hour patrons so we can enjoy it. On both occasions we ended up sitting inside because all the outdoor seating upstairs was already taken. Happy hour is Mon-Fri from 4-6pm and they have a number of appetizers for $3-7, house wines (red and white) for $3, and draft beer for $3. No well drink specials though. Food is pretty good and the portions are pretty decent. I especially liked the garlic fries and the pulled pork sliders. Hubby and friends really liked the pub wings. None of us really liked the Mediterranean Flavors (a platter of hummus, tapenade, and bruschetta). Next time, I'd definitely make up an excuse to leave work early so I can get a table outside to enjoy the warm, sunny weather. (We only get like 2 months of it, we gotta take advantage while we can!)

I have lived in the Seattle area my whole life. A friend recommended this place as a good spot to watch the Blue Angels over the weekend. As we drove up the hill to the golf course and restaurant, it simply took my breath away. The view is truly amazing, I have never seen anything else like it in our area. We had brunch at Calcutta's. You definitely want to make reservations on a saturday. When we arrived, we were told it would be a 2 hour wait to get in. But, then their south patio opened up, and we grabbed a table next to the railing with the most spectacular view I have ever experienced in a restaurant. The service was excellent. My husband had the egg's benedict and their signature bloody mary. He really enjoyed his breakfast, and the bloody mary was the best ever ! I had the crab cake salad and chardonnay. They are definitely pricey, wine at $10 a glass. And my crab cake salad was $20. But, oh so worth it for a special treat. It turned out not to be a great place to watch the Blue Angels, because they were pretty far away. But, we just LOVED this place, and will definitely go back. Wish I was a golfer, so I could drive around the whole course, very very beautiful place.

The fish could have been cooked another 60 seconds and this would have been a "5 star" place. The coleslaw and fries were very tasty and the salad with chicken was perfect. Go for lunch on a sunny day and sit outside. The view is amazing.

Located on the grounds of the Golf Club at Newcastle, every experience here and on the course is ethereal! The venue is beautiful; the views breathtaking, food always delicious-Northwest- fresh, and the staff impeccable. There is even a resident Bagpiper who plays on the green just below the deck at sunset every evening (May through September)! The interior is somewhat old-world-colonial style with wicker, wood, a stone fireplace, overstuffed leather furniture, etc. On those warm summer days, I wish for more outdoor seating to enjoy the panoramic views of Bellevue, Mercer Island, Lake Washington, Seattle, and the Olympics and beyond! While the menu is not that complex or sophisticated it offers a nice selection along with the standard bar fare. The bar is well appointed, drinks always delicious, and Jason, my favorite bartender will always take good care of you.

I'm impressed! This has been a favorite destination of ours for years. But, now, it's even better. We were celebrating hubby's b-day and chose to sit in the bar. Warmly greeted by the maitre'd, promptly seated and greeted by "Jim" who took our drink order which arrived within minutes, including water. Main reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is because the Happy Hour food choices are poor. 5 items only. We ordered calamari and Ahi Tuna Tempura sushi from the dinner menu instead and, despite the higher price, were very pleased with the freshness and how delicious it was. Still hungry we decided to split an entrée - one of the new menu items....Dungeness Crab and Veggie Vol a Vent. Filled with crab, seasonal vegetables in a champagne cream sauce tucked in layers of puff pastry. SO, SO GOOD!!!! After Jim discovered it was hubby's b-day, he surprised him with a chocolate decadence cake slice with Happy Birthday written in chocolate on the rim of the plate. Sweet ending to a sweet evening! The tables, chairs and bar have all been refurbished - the place sparkles once again.

My experiences with the Calcutta Grill always leave me wishing at the end. The food is decent and competently prepared, but this last time, for Father's Day, I had their "spicy" beef hash; the poached egg was nice, but the hash wasn't very hash-y or spicy, which made we wish the dish was stronger than it was. On the other hand, some of the other offerings seemed a lot better, and the cold side and dessert buffets were good additions to the Father's Day brunch. But again, I find myself wishing that the experience was better, the service was kind of slow, the drinks trickled out in kind of a weird pattern, first an Americano, then coffee drinks, then the kid's drinks, and last the Arnold Palmer. Could these have been brought together in a little more organized manner? Maybe. But then the entrees came out in a similar disjointed fashion. One plate of pancakes shows up, then the hash. Then another set of pancakes and a scramble. Then the kid's food, and then finally the omelette. I understand coordinating this stuff coming out of the kitchen can be more difficult with a larger party, but often, things were dropped off without explanation of when the other items were coming. Overall, we liked the food, and had a good time at the Calcutta Grill. I just wish is was better, and it feels like with a few tweaks to the service and the food, it could have been much better than it was.

Sunday night, out of prime rib. It has no outdoor lights, service was crap (had to ask for water, spoons, steak knives.). Won't be going back there anytime soon. Way too $$$$$

  • John T.

Of course the view is the reason to go. On a sunny day, this is one of the most stunning places in Seattle, and it gets another star. The food, on the expensive side for the quality, is genera sly okay, but I've had a few misses over the years and rarely anything that I would rate five stars. Service is generally fair to good. What really bothers me about the restaurant is that with a better menu (it's booooooring), a good chef and some attention to detail, this could be a destination restaurant. But no one seems to want to put out the effort so it's generally okay, good at times, but never great.

  • Mike T.

I'm giving them 3 stars today because they've always been pretty consistent with service and food, but after today, they've moved to my "take a chance" list. We used to eat brunch here when we had guests or for special occasions. It was a nice place, the service was excellent and the food was good. They stopped the buffet brunch several months ago, which was fine because they had the "Classic Brunch" which was just as good. We went there today w/out of town guests and were disappointed that they no longer had the "classic brunch" on the printed menu - even though it was still shown online. Our waiter said they're changing over to the fall/winter menu now. I think we're going to have to find another breakfast place on the eastside that we can count on to be consistent when we have out of town guests.

I am a fan of the service staff here. Attentive, always cool under pressure and just plain nice. Since drinking and golf is a huge theme here, the food is an after-thought for me. I finish the plates, that's about it! Old world setting and very well manicured!

Want to impress with a spectacular view? Calcutta Grill at Newcastle Golf club! Food is above average and reasonable (except the brunch specials on holidays which tend to be very pricey). I've sat here with friends just enjoying wine and appetizers and soaking in the panoramic views of greater Seattle/Bellevue, Lake Washington. If you get to play the course too, that would be almost be a perfect day.

A great place for a special Mothers Day Treat. Way too much food to choose from and sample. Passed on dinner that night as I was still too full. Unique that they have a full sushi table. Standard Omelet Station, along with a Pasta Station. And my fav, the Crepe Station. The Croissant French Toast Pudding was to die for - along with the Pepper Bacon. And the best part - Desserts. A whole island of them - there one can sample to their hearts content. 2nd time doing this Brunch. Great venue for any special occassion.

I use to work here. All notes as followed are covered in my bias. But here you go: Amazing view. Take out of town guests here. I use to say it's the third best view of Seattle. Space Needle, Columbia Tower (woman's restroom) and The Golf Club at Newcastle. Great food. Before I started working here I was only use to what I was comfortable eating. I was a poor post college girl, I wasn't going to gamble on anything I didn't absolutely know I liked. But thanks to this place I am much more well versed in food. The problem is when I go to Seattle magazine and try the place they claim is the best for "blank" I always just think back fondly to Calcutta. They changed the menu since I was a server so I can't really comment on the current menu. I can say the chiefs try though. Man do they try. The worst thing is that they try to make it cool and memorable and something fun and risky and they get shot down by people ordering fish and chips and burgers with the craziest modifications ever. They are in a unique pickle of trying to be something to everyone. You can't make every guest happy. If your the type of guest that is so particular then maybe this place isn't for you. Not all the wait staff is brilliant, but some are. The wine is set up to match the food, not necessarily northwest only. They mail out coupons sometimes too. Read the fine print. Don't complain that fine print exists. It will always exist, stop giving the poor server a hard time. Oh and bag piper at sunset during the summer. All summer long. First time I heard him, I got a little teary eyed. It's just something that is unique and fun.

Loved their French Onion Soup, their desserts (especially the Chocolate Truffle Tart and the Apple-Cranberry Crisp). Had a good wine list as well. The Draper Valley Chicken would have been perfect too but it was a tad too salty for me. Great service, definitely worth going to!

We brought a family friend there who is in Seattle for a visit. Great meal and great views. We had tenderloin, ribeye, duck breast and they were pretty good. One of the servings were not cooked to our desire and it was promptly taken back, replaced and we got free deserts. Hence, service was extremely great and was above and beyond our expectations. The peanut tart was superb (my daughter finished an entire serving of it even though she declared to be full after the entree). View we know is great because I have been there before but due to no fault of their we could not see much of it (it was raining! :))

Beautifully located by the golf course. We dropped by because I really wanted steak and fries that night. Steak was good, cooked just right and hit the spot. I dressed and acted like a college kid, but they still gave me excellent service. There were two candles on the table, one was not lighted, and I broke it trying to light it with another, quite an embarrassing moment, but there was no unpleasant look. Without a word, the service staff came right out and replaced it with a lighted one. Very professional servers.

After an over priced round of golf I was a bit reluctant to have lunch in the grill.....good thing we did because the food is EXCELLENT. LOVED IT. Great view of the course and exceptional service. I would go here just for lunch!! Best of all I didn't have to pay the bill, but I loved the salmon!

First of all, I have to say the restaurant is beautiful. The views are the absolute best in all of Seattle. They have outdoor seating which, especially in the summer, cannot be surpassed. So if you want to have a cocktail and sit outside, this is your spot. HOWEVER, if you want to have dinner, watch out. The waitresses are surly - even rude. Our table was over an hour late, which we did not complain about, but then they cut the drinks off early, so we were shortchanged on our celebration. Also, we had to practically beg for silverware and dishes (luckily their bus-girl was very nice). We were never offered dessert, coffee, after dinner drinks, more water, more bread - basically, the waitress took our order and then dumped food on our table. We had a group of 10 of us on a Tuesday night, so you'd think they would be happy to get a $500 tab. I have to say, however, that the food was very good. I would not recommend this place for a nice dinner, but would definitely recommend it for a cocktail at sundown.

The view... what can you say about a view like that? Magnificent! But.... (sorry) The food is good not great, service is VERY slow, but the staff is friendly and the view makes it worth the wait. I'd recommend Sunday Brunch or sit in the bar, buy the fire, and enjoy an app and a drink!

Food here is extremely mediocre, 2 flat crab cakes for 10 bucks. Yeah, coating it with arugula won't make me forget that there are just 2 crab cakes. Other dishes prime rib and pasta dishes miss the mark. I go here often for the driving range and will keep my trips limited for that purpose alone. Never returning for the food!!

  • Nestor P.

Excellent located and with a nice view of Seattle and Bellevue this restaurant maybe an option if you are around Newcastle and want to pay for a nice view in a very nice place. The menu is not that complex or sophisticated and offers a nice selection of beef, seafood, fish and pork. I ordered the New York Strip and the Onion soup. The soup was very good and the steak was average. The desserts are not good in my opinion, I ordered the Sticky Toffee Pudding Sundae and was not good at all. They can do better in my opinion because the restaurant is very well located and very nice decorated. The bar is very good and has a nice offer.

Never had a bad meal here. Dinner is not too complicated and the wine selection is limited but is reflective of the menu. I recently had the pan-roasted halibut with saffron-infused basmati---it was ethereal. The pub offers more casual fares like burgers and fish & chips. Try the house special mac and cheese with Dungeness crab. Sunday brunch offers up pretty much anything you can think of from build-your-own omelets, to smoked salmon, to sushi. Best place to catch a spectacular sunset while bagpipes play in the background.

The only remarkable aspect of this eatery is the setting. We ate al fresco on the patio which has breathtaking views of Lake Washington and Seattle. Contrary to many of the reviewers here, I found the service inattentive and strange. The young women who greeted us were pretty dismissive and quickly turned their attention to the men behind us. Our waiter would disappear and be unavailable for long stretches at a time. My husband ordered a Sazerac (which are well prepared in several restaurants we have visited in Seattle.) Instead of just admitting they had no idea what the drink was, he brought some strange concoction which had to be returned. This brings me to the food. To describe it as mediocre would be generous. The bread was good, but beyond that the fried calamari appeared as if it came out of a frozen food bag and the spinach and artichoke dip had slivers of potato as filler with an unusual dearth of artichoke. The crabcakes were the most edible selection although $12 for two quarter size pieces seemed expensive even for a good restaurant. if you want to enjoy the view from here, go for a glass of wine and dessert - two items difficult to mess up. Go just once, though, on a warm and sunny day.

If you can find the end of the Sunday brunch buffet, you let me know. That thing goes on forever! Swear to Jeebus, they got three huge rooms of food. Pretty much anything you could, or would want in a brunch buffet...the usual breakfast fare, of course, then on top of that fresh seafood, sushi, cold cuts, tables full of desserts...ah jeez, I think I just pooped...it's so good both quantity and quality. Gotta say it's a touch pricey($32/per person), but you definitely get your money's worth. Check it yo!

Food average but atmosphire is top notch!! Seasonal menues so makes it good for regulars. They could really make it great if they increased the food quality and service was a little more attentive, but lovely location!!

They have a fabulous Sunday brunch. I take everyone that I know to visit here, impeticular anyone from out of town. The view is one of the best on a nice day you can see to west Seattle. The only down side is that the menu seems to change an awful lot but the view far out weighs the menu issues in my book!

Mother's Day brunch. It's an annual event and this was my first time here. Amazing view, nice decor, attentive staff, and the food? Typical fair of handcarved meat, carbs, and meats. Was there anything unique or unexpected? Nope. It was $50 per person including 20% gratuity. A bit steep for a brunch if you ask me. I would have opted for Salty's only because they have a chocolate fountain and a larger selection of seafood (oysters, crab, clams, etc). I wasn't too keen on having the service/ help running behind us throughout the meal. I was told that normally, they would have sat us in the main dining room with a gorgeous view of the city. Today, we were in another part of the facility. Overall, it was a nice place to take your mom and family. Very Suburban.
