    Best pretzel rolls!

Tired of the same old stale pretzel at the mall food court? Need something to bring for that dreaded potluck at work? Well, swing by Hess bakery and grab some pretzels and rolls to go. They will be gone before you know it! The pretzel bread is so soft that you really don't have to put anything on it. Danke.

Their dessert are great, very delicious and moist but i can't say the same for their sandwich those are ok... Nothing wild about them i can probably do those at home. Love their cakess too. If you need to order some make sure you do it 2 days in advance otherwise you have to pay a crazy price.

First, the bad. The pretzels were terrible. Hard, brittle, stale, overly salted, and not warm. We asked if there were warm pretzels available and were told that health code regulations prevented them from selling warm pretzels. Quick, someone tell Auntie Anne's. Now, the good. Hess has a fantastic selection of German beers in their coolers and German/European candies unavailable anywhere else. Our favorite is the "Happy Hippo"- a hardened meringue shell filled with creamy chocolate and dipped in sprinkles. (Obviously in the shape of a hippopotamus. We'll be back for the hippos in bulk, maybe a brew, and nothing else.

Hess' German Deli & Bakery is a real gem, and should not be confused with the German Pastry shop next door. You should definitely make an effort to go to Hess if you are in the area and try their pretzels. Hess is well known for their outstanding breads and pretzels made daily in-house. It has a wide assortment of authentic and high quality European (predominantly German) products at a reasonable price. In addition to carrying all these great products, they have an impressive Deli counter with incredible items such as fresh Havarti cheese, different types of potato salads, and meats. They can prepare Sandwiches at the Deli counter using their amazing bread. They do not make cakes or pastries so just go next door to the German bakery to get them. Be prepared to wait a long time (20 min or more) if you decide to visit their deli section at peak hours on Saturday mornings. Once you get to the Deli counter, you should immediately take a number. The customers waiting in line can be older and may not necessarily position themselves in a manner that is conducive to enhancing your ability access to the counter (to view items prior to ordering or to speaking with the deli counter employee). Be patient, it is well worth it if you have the time.

I am always on the search for wonderful German food. Hess is an absolute gem of a find!!! They make these wonderful sandwiches with special German meats, you can also get bratwurst etc. Their Weißwurst is the best that I've ever had stateside. The bakery makes great authentic Brötchen. On the bakery side there are so many amazing cakes and pastries! There is a cute sitting area to enjoy your cake and perhaps a coffee. You can also order a sandwich in there. This place is a must visit! One last thing: in the deli side they sell all sorts of imported German chocolates and foods.

First off, full disclosure, I just returned from a three hour tour in Germany so this place is very close to my heart. Being in the delicatessen is like being in a German bakery or store. All the German and Austrian food and drink brands are here, mustards, pickles, meats, würst, German breads, beers, chocolates, and so so much more! The employees are German and offer lovely conversation if you engage them first - which is classic German behavior. This is a very small shop but that's what is so great about it! It's personal! Spend your money here, at places like this!!! If you are craving a burger, fine, but this is the place to go if you want an amazing sandwich in perfect German style. They also sell all their deli items by pound and call ahead for catering services! I can not say enough wonderful things about this place. I will definitely be back!!!!

It´s nice to see this little island of Europe in the western WA. Especially if you are from Europe and you need to get some ingredients for a christmas dinner which you wanna do in (in my case) czech style. German and czech cousine is similar in some cases so I got here everything what i needed or close enough. And I refreshed my german :-) They have very good meat products and bread. But as I said, I am from Europe so I just found something what I am used to more or less. So that´s why I like it. Keep doing great job guys. I will visit you again when I´ll be in WA.

I felt my experience here was so so. I ordered a lot of pastries here to take home! I ate some(fruit turnovers) right away and they were good! I however also got some pretzels which seemed to have gotten hard just overnight. I microwaved it and it got a little bit softer but by the time I was close to finishing eating it it was harder than it was before! I also ate at the restaurant here. There was a lady with a thick German accent and she was so incredibly nice! I got a cup of broccoli soup and some sausages. Oy vey! I got filled up in no time! Each dish came with a slice of bread and I was so full I could not finish everything! The soup and sausage were pretty solid but on the flip side of the coin not incredibly memorable either. Probably the best part was that incredibly nice lady!

Just moved back from Germany, and I was worried I wouldn't be able to get good authentic German food-I was wrong. Just stopped by Hess today and bought a bunch of cheese, meat, and bread. I'm a happy camper now :) I will be making trips from Bellevue to Lakewood more often. There are also other German products, written in German, like Nivea or Tempo. There's beer-try the Paulaner (beer from münchen). The people there are very friendly. Anyway, I'm happy to have found this place and you should definitely check it out

I have been coming here basically my whole life. My grandma was from Germany and she would always go to Hess's. I grew up on their delicious meats and giant pretzels that were the size of my face!

I went to the bakeshop for the first time and excited to see what are the choices of cakes that I could buy for my sons birthday. There was like 4 customers ahead of me and they are all the same races the cashier or the lady is the one helping them but there are some employees who's there but didn't even care to ask what I'm looking for or what I need. So no one seems to acknowledge my presence since I'm not one of them I asked the cashier what are the available whole cakes they have. She said just Black Forest and its $50 though it shows on the menu whole cakes are $39.50. So I've waited for my turn and finally there's another girl beside the cashier and I asked her can you help me I just want to buy a whole Black Forest cake. And then the cashier said Its 50$ I'll take it how come it's shows on the menu board it's $39.50 the cashier said because you didn't order it 2 days ahead. I asked the other girl if they could put happy birthday on the cake and the cashier said the person who does it is not available. And then the cashier talks to her customer and said I'll help you now with no interruptions. That is how I was treated.

5 stars by virtue of being open and providing nourishing German deli food, liver sausage, good mustard, homemade pretzels, and other good stuff. Purchase the following ingredients: Genussbrot - wholesome dense thin slices of rye sourdough bread with Italian herbs Pretzel ball Pate with Onions Whole Grain Mustard Smoked Gouda Put the pate on the rye or the pretzel ball. Put the mustard on top of that. Put the gouda on top of that. Delicious, wholesome and healthy. Yum!

Weisswurst?...Oh yes please. Blood and toungue sausage?... Pile that shit high baby. Schneider weiss beer? ...I'll take 2 Top it all off with delicous house made mustard and an array of other delicous cheeses and gelatinous pork bits and I'm in heaven. If you haven't been here you need to get here and fast. You won't regret it.

Quick, efficient, and they have so many European snacks, cheeses, meats, and BREADS! I love it. I got a quick order of my favorite breads to share with hubby. He's never has certain rolls and such, so I had to share the experience. One year right before Xmas, we bought their remainder of rolls. :) That's love!

don't buy a sandwich from the bakery. Over priced and the the German bread was super hard. They probably thought he's a dumb American and won't notice the hard bread ..I'm retired army with 3 tours in Germany and was married to a German. I saved a trip to Home Depot to buy a hammer and used the sandwich to hammer in some nails!

The Hess Bakery and Deli continues to thrive, as we can attest from today's visit. Located on Mt. Tahoma Dr. just off of Bridgeport, what was once a small German shopping center has consolidated into two separate but equally attractive businesses, a deli and bakery on one side and a cafe and pastry shop on the other. The deli features authentic sausage and cold cuts made by a master in Federal Way, along with fresh bread (ein echtes Graubrot!) and soft pretzels. They also have chocolate, cooking products and magazines that you can't get anywhere in the South Sound. The cafe has a wide variety of seating in a room decorated with photographs and paintings of German and Austrian settings. Their lunch menu includes sandwiches and soup, and their pastry display has all of the cheesecake (made in German, not creamy N.Y. style, Gott sei Dank), Apfelkuchen, and Schwärzwälder Kirschtorte you could ask for. The friendly staff is bilingual and welcoming. Hess is your German Mecca in Lakewood. Check it out!

I love this place. I can get the things I used to eat while I lived in Germany. I love how nice and friendly everyone is. I miss living in Germany and this place reminds me of there. I know I can get what I need there. The quality of products is top notch.

We are in the restaurant side. Yep 2 days before Christmas and they were slammed Food. 5 stars. Excellent. Real German food, great breads. Great meats! Service. Did we mention slammed. They were friendly helpful but way too few servers and they were very slow.

We absolutely love this place! We stop by often to pick up some of their deli meats. They have a great selection. A lot of options you may not be able to find at other places. The smoked beef is our favorite. We get it every time. The staff is great! Super friendly & helpful. Always chatting & willing to give samples of the meats. They have a lot of other items at their shop as well, ranging from baked goods to all sorts of canned goods. We love to pick up some of the chocolates that are hard to find at other stores. Also, you can order sandwiches & eat them there if you like as well. I highly recommend this deli!

I was expecting the BEST pretzel I'd ever eaten...........not true. It was fine but nothing spectacular. The meats/salami were way OVERPRICED - $14lb for the same thing that I buy at Marvel Deli for $6-9. Probably won't be back unless I have some crazy craving for a pretzel and I'm in Lakewood...........

Oh my goodness. This place is heaven. My in-laws love German food, so whenever they come for a visit we head straight here to stock up on supplies. It's amazing, and everything in the meat case seems fresh and looks very good. It's a very clean place, and lots of little goodies in the aisles to tempt you. Granted, it's small, but it's quaint. And how can you pass by the bread section? It's right behind the cashier. And it's all delectable. Mmmm. So glad my in-laws arrive Monday for their visit. Looking forward to those brauts and German bread!

I have been here about 4 times now, and I've never been disappointed. Their fresh baked rolls and pretzels are AMAZING. I've also gotten some of their candies which my daughter I absolutely loves It's mainly the gummy bears she likes. I also purchased Gouda cheese, and hard salami at the deli to put on my rolls. It was absolutely delicious! I've never been to their little restaurant, but they sell their cakes and pastries in there. The cherry turnover, this almond crusted butter cream pastry is what I got today. And both were delicious! Their turn over was perfectly flaky without being dry, and there was just enough cherry filling to balance out the pastry. Their almond crusted butter cream pastry was light, perfectly sweetened and well balanced. The almond crust was amazing too! the next time I go I will actually sit and order something from their little restaurant, and I'll order another 2 or 3 different pastries I highly recommend this place.

How can you not love this place? It has been around since the 60s, if I understand it correctly. They exist to bring a taste of the old fatherland back here for the sweet chatty ladies who run the joint. They moved over here about the same time back then, and started bringing in sweets, cold cuts, and packaged goods that would remind them of home. Rumor has it that they didn't set out to make a ton of money, just to keep the place afloat. Today, it's a deli, specialty mart, beer store, and bakery. You walk in past a serious pastry shop that's also german, and also staffed (and frequented) by people of a certain age who still have their accents and often chat with employees in german. Inside Hess, you walk in to see three aisles of pickles, toppings, crackers, snacks, cookies, and sometimes a fair few holiday treats in stock as well. There are four coolers on one wall, with pops to have with your sandwich order as well as a pretty solid selection of german beers--every Ayinger, every Weihenstephaner, including some that even the beer stores don't stock, and quite a few other brands as well. Past the aisles along the wall opposite the front door is a big deli case full of pates, salamis, wursts, and other specialty items. They even make their own german potato salad. You can pretty much put together a full-on picnic with everything you can find in this place. Best of all, in back, there's a bakery cracnking out pretzels, rolls, and other side-dish type breads. All the sweets are next door. The pretzels are amazing, dense and chewy and perfect with one of the many mustards they stock. Maybe the best bread I have ever had. This place is legendary in the south sound--great source of occasional treats or a regular spot to get stuff for sandwiches. I know a few kids who grew up with meats from Hess in their lunch bag at school...and man, am I retroactively envious.

We always get their bratwursts, sausages and pretzels & sticks when we crave for authentic german breakfast and when visitors and relatives come to our home for vacation. The best and easiest breakfast to serve guests and they love it! Make sure to buy their awesome homemade mustard dip as well. I also buy sugar crystals here and kinder bueno chocolates for the kids. And yes, the pickles they sell are so good!

It smells like Germany in here and I mean this in the best possible way, it also sounds like Germany with everyone speaking German. I am in food heaven, don't know where to look first, so I buy just about everything I can. They say don't shop when you are hungry, well, I did not, I went next door to the bakery and shared a Bienenstich with my daughter, instant happiness for me. I made three (3) visits during my stay here, each time buying up at least $ 50.-- worth of things I cannot get in my town, I am jealous because I don't have this kind of store where I live. That just means that I have to come and visit again soon.

  • Lindsey H.

I used to buy all my bread from here for my cafe. Very sweet people, wish my Oma was alive to come visit. She'd love it here! They have such a variety of German stuff, reminds me of going back to Germany!

Ummm... I know very little about German food and wursts and whatnot. My solution to the intimidating deli counter (replete with 3 or 4 little old German ladies) - the mixed meat sandwich! Just go on up, tell 'em you trust their judgment and ask for a sandwich on a roll with a sharp cheese and a mix of different meats. I've done this about 5 times and it's awesome every single time. Maybe there's a better way, but I'm pretty happy with the results. Get some German potato salad, stop by the cooler for some cold German brews, and grabs a fresh pretzel (with one of those mustard cups) and you've got a lunch that'll make any day a success.

    (5)
  • Pam J.

The flavor of the prosciutto was awesome. However the 3 of us each had like two slices on our sandwiches. The rest of our group had at least 1/2 inch of meat each on theirs. So only 2 stars... On the flip side, the best pretzel I've ever had-and they make a sweet raisin pretzel that was awesome. So I'll give a star just for those.

Places like Hess German Delicatessen & Bakery are becoming extinct. Hess is kind of like a time capsule. The ladies in here are actually German, and speak what I could only guess what German back and forth. This place is a no-frills kind of place, they know what they're good at, and they do it exceptionally well. You're going to have to rethink what your opinion of a good pretzel is, and no, Auntie Annie's from the mall doesn't count. Good old fashioned German goods including meats, cheeses, german pantry staples and of course their fresh made pretzels. Oh their pretzels, the most amazing i've ever had. Super tasty, appropriately salted, crusty and chewy on the outside, and moist as can be on the inside. I even used my Pretzel rolls next day for sandwiches and found that they were still super tasty, and resilient when warmed in the oven. Early bird gets the worm, they run out of hot ticket items early in the day, but usually have a supply of pretzels left by afternoon. Parking is super easy, and the staff at Hess are an absolute delight.

Bakery goods are delicious! What I found that was wrong was they did not share with you a price difference if you ate your bakery items there on the premises and when you took your items with you!

  • Laura M.

Been a customer here for over twenty years. The largest German deli and bakery in the area. I love all their baked goods, but especially the pretzel rolls. I love their huge meat department, with lots to choose from. They have the best selection of chocolates and candy, including my favorite, the noisette by Milka. Definitely worth a trip to Lakewood.

  • Koral M.

My daughter loves this place, made her feel like she was in Germany again. Good is good, desserts are great. Reasonably priced, of world atmosphere. If you're missing german food is well worth the trip.

  • Kelly J.

Love this place. It's always a treat to take the trip here on Fridays :) I could go broke buying all my childhood faves from growing up with my aunt who is German and my mother who spent a good part of her life there too... sometimes they even do the farmers market in Puyallup

    (4)
  • Ellen T.

Here's what you WON'T regret buying here: - Reasonably priced and decent selection of German beer (bier!) - Fresh pickled herring and house-made pickled creamed herring that actually doesn't taste overbearing or too briney - Dutch mustard, German mustard, French mustard, take your pick - Fun, unique little Christmas chocolates and candies you won't find anywhere else, not even at World Market - Thick cut bologna and mustard-seed infused salami - Any kind of wurst you'd ever want to try - Last but not least, the mutha****ing PRETZELS! I'm talking real, legit, straight out of the European motherland Germany pretzels that are like 10 inches across with the slit on the bottom and rock salted, not those 4 inch Tom Douglass pretzels that everyone thinks are legit. The pretzel sticks are also pretty lengthy and wide enough for making a sandwich. This place has been in the same location for at least 30 years. The market itself isn't huge but it offers a selection of items you wont find elsewhere. The deli is run by an older mother & daughter team whom are totally friendly, but would likely love you even more if you spoke German with them. They take checks and debit over 3 dollars. Once you cash out, you can walk across the hall to the cafe, which looks and feels more like an Eagle's social hall than a cafe. It is mostly a social place for older vets and retired military folk but everyone is friendly. You're likely to overhear conversations about HAM radio, politics, recipes, so-and-so's grandchildren, and car shows. The cafe is probably best known for its cakes which aren't sugary sweet like American cakes & pastries. My favorite is the black forest cake with its yummy layers of real butter/whip cream. They also make really good cheesecake. Anyway, stop in on a Sunday when its most lively.

Holy cow. Saw all the reviews on here and so glad I came! Best meats and cheeses with pretzels in the deli. I can't wait to try more. With the most beautiful display of sweets and cakes over in the bakery. Went for my honeys birthday to pick up some treats for us, everyone was so helpful and very friendly. I can not wait to go back.

The best deli around. Authentic German baked pastries, breads and pretzels. This is THE place to come when in the market for German food goods, both fresh prepared and imported.

It is such a treat when I visit this place. Staff is always polite! There are so many cakes to choose from but come early when they open! The bee stings are delicious and are usually sold out by lunchtime or towards late afternoon.

This is our go-to store for German goodies! When you walk in, the wonderful smell from the bakery and the deli is heavenly. :) The staff is absolutely fantastic as well. They are all very friendly and helpful. Their bakery is fabulous with a wide variety of in-house pretzels, breads, sweet rolls, etc. We can't get out of there without picking up at at least a few pretzels. We also tried one of their new Cheese Pretzels and a holiday Stollen on our last visit. Both were absolutely amazing! The deli is the main draw for us. Some of our absolute favorites are the Bratwurst, Wieners and the LandJaeger (supplied by Bavarian Meats I believe). Their Cervalat (salami) is also highly recommended and makes fantastic sandwiches, especially when paired with the ButterKase. Everything in their deli case is top-notch! As others have mentioned, the rest of the store consists of a broad spectrum of imports. They carry everything from chocolates and candies to mustards, seasoning packets and ingredients for cooking German recipes, health and beauty products, magazines, bier and wine, soda, etc. It's one of our favorite shopping destinations and well worth a dedicated trip to visit them.

  • J M.

Worst place ever. I stood there forever while the employees ignored me and let people behind me cut in line. I understand that I'm not German, but there was no reason to be rude. I finally just asked one lady if she was going to help me... She just stared at me and I told her I was going to need multiple things, in multiple boxes and she told me I couldn't do that... It had to be in one box. So, I left. I should have left a long time ago though.

Fantastic German deli with fresh baked breads, rolls, and pretzels! I only got two types of the pretzels, didn't try out the deli. But I noticed they have a lot of the condiments and sundries that you can't find the US that are uniquely German! There's a no-frills bakery right across the hall from the deli which has some great pastries and cakes. My favorite was the sweet bread topped with almond cream and almonds. Their apple fritters weren't bad either. Will definitely go back again!

I have been going here since I was a little girl and my mom would take me with her. Been through their 3 moves. Love them. I moved to Las Vegas 5+ years ago and am sorely missing my sourdough rye bread and meats! Every time my sister comes to visit she asks the ladies for a freshly baked loaf or two, specially doubled wrapped, so she can bring it down with her. Thank you ladies so much for your extra efforts!

Very hight authentic quality , a little on the $ side but well worth it for some homemade German food . They are very popular and busy be sure to stop by this place when u are in the north end of tacoma

A friend of mine showed me the place a few days before I left Washington and I was amazed of the place, of the fresh bread and meats and cheese they have and make, of the German goods they have for purchase such as actual European pop, and of course chocolates, spices, actual German sharp mustard, curry ketchup, and alot of other great things. I was born and grew up in Germany and remember going to the butcher for meat and to get fresh milk and cheese from the farmers, and then going to the bakery where the baker would combine the ingredients and make my Mom and I some amazing sandwiches...this place is the only place within the US where I have experienced the same and it was nice to talk to the workers there who all speak German and are from Germany. I recommend going to the deli and ordering a sandwich, however you like it they will make it...ham, salami, a variety of cheeses, butter and mustard, and potato salad or sauerkraut. Next door is a German style restaurant where they serve cakes and baked goods, you cant go wrong here either my friend says the best cheesecake he has ever had in his life is made there.

I'm super impressed. The service is awesome. Maybe it Is jist a lucky day. This was of course my first time visiting but I am hooked. The quality of the meat and cheese and their bread is so good. I definitely will not go back to fast food for lunch anytime soon. They were pretty fast too

Wonderful brotchens and the house made leberwurst was very tasty. The one disappointing thing is the fact that you cannot have a brooches sandwich and a cup of coffee there like in Germany. IF the two places there just coordinated then that would be great.

  • David M.

My family and I have been coming to this Germany Bakery for about 40 years. We love it. Especially the bread!!! It is a must. The bread is so fresh. The smells are like you smell in the bakeries in Germany. They speak German or English. They import many German products for their store. The atmosphere is great and the neighborhood is nice. Love those pretzels, brotchen, and rye bread!!!

When I miss Germany this is where I go. Fresh German bread....need I say more. Chewy on the inside, crusty on the outside. Perfection. An ample selection of frankfurters, salamis, and sausages. But my favorite part is the German groceries. All your favorite sauces, condiments, coffees, and candies from Deutschland. Oh...and lets not forget German bier.

Great place. Right when I walked in the smell of the bread made me feel like I was back in Germany. Sandwich I bought was tasty and made when to order. Love this place.

I love this place. The cakes I've tried are delicious, BUT my favorite is their hazelnut cake. The brochens are freshly made and their sandwiches are good too! Spetzie drink is auch sehr gut. Oh and if you like milk chocolate then YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST try their Kinder Chocolate. I believe it's less than 3.00. Six perfect pieces of true bliss.

I used to come here when I was in high school and would often buy pretzels from Oscars in Lacey. Decided to take hubs here to show him a deli that is similar to the one we go to for all our favorite Russian foods (Friendly Foods). He loved checking out all the deli offerings. Five stars are for the Pretzels! Yes, these things are piping hot fresh and deserve five stars. All the pretzels in each shape and size are great. Grab several you will regret it if you don't. We got there around noon on a Saturday and there was always fresh pretzels coming out. Also, connected to the deli is a bakery that has great danishes and cakes. I plan to come back here and try more deserts the one's we tried were good but next time I will take my time, buy a cup of coffee and eat there.

I had intended to send this as a private message to the owner who replied, but I'm not that kind of person, so here it is for EVERYONE. I'm sorry you found my review "insulting" - that was not my intention - I'm HONEST and it sometimes can come across the wrong way - I'm not sure if you remember that day and the weather but I sure do - it was terrible, pouring rain and the driving conditions were horrible. To have come all that way with it taking much longer than it normally did, it was very disappointing. I come all the way from Silverdale, so I'm not local or anything - it's not a five minute drive, it's like an hour (this particular day due to the rain it was almost an hour and a half!) and not be able to buy what I was craving - I'm sure you can understand why I was disappointed. I DO appreciate the hard work you guys do and you are great and if I come in and I have more positive experiences I will definitely redo my review and give more stars and great comments. I'm actually NOT mean or insulting usually - just, as I said, honest, sometimes brutally so. I guess I will be coming in early from now on and if I have something later in the day that would take me by the bakery I will not to avoid future disappointment. (And I actually got a message from a guy who totally intended to go but because of THIS review knows to go early). If it makes you feel better, really this was the ONLY bad experience I've ever had there as usually I do go in earlier. The pretzels are AMAZING and the staff has always been friendly. So if it soothes your bruised ego, I will give ONE more star now and trust me, I'll be back, and if I have more good experiences updates and more stars will follow. For now - Three stars, average.

I had the best experience here. Being from Texas, there's nothing more in the world that I want when dealing with a business of any kind than feeling like I've been taken care of. From the moment I walked in the door, I felt that way. I walked up to the deli counter and said "I've never been here before, and I would like a sandwich." The lady behind the counter asked me "Do you trust me?". I quickly replied that I did indeed, from the moment I saw her, trust this woman. She made me a mixed meat sandwich with cheese, butter, and mustard. It was in my top ten sandwiches of all time. I also got some of the best German potato salad I've ever had. I grabbed some pretzel rolls and a loaf of sweet prezel bread to go. As I was paying, the man that was ringing me up gave me directions on how to keep the pretzel rolls and sweet bread in optimal condition until time of consumption. I can't possibly tell you how awesome an experience this was. These people know their stuff, everything was super-tasty, and I felt like everything was right in the world.

I was born in Germany and have lived in Western Washington for quite a long time - this is the *only * place I've found that gets it right. Other bakeries have tried to perfect the German laugenbrezel, but only Hess' Deli has managed to do it (which is strange, when you think about it. Every pretzel stand in Bayern - they all taste the same. here? Not so much). Maybe it's hard to master the lye? Must be. I live north of Seattle but any time I'm up or down I5 I make it a point to fight the traffic at Bridgeport Way. The pretzels will knock your socks off - perfecly cooked and you should eat them split down the middle and with a bit of butter. Heaven. Their breads are another taste of the Vaterland. The farm-style breads all have the perfect combination of chewiness and heft, without being too dry or crusty. I try to stock up on loaves when I'm here so I never have to buy bread at the grocery store. The deli counter has a wide selection of German specialties. The prices aren't the lowest in town, but I never mind paying for quality. I usually load up on cervelat (a salami-type meat), gelbwurst (a yellow-skinned sausage made from primarily veal and pork with ginger and nutmeg spices), landjaeger, fleishsalat (meat salad). Everything I've ever purchased has been fresh, tasty, and consistent. You can stock up on all your German favorites here- from beer to mustard to German-language magazines and puzzle books. If you haven't been... by all means- Go!

staunenswert- (If my German is rusty please forgive me)= AMAZING!!!!!!! Amazing German foods and snacks. The Deli meats is what drives me to come here so I would stop by and if you do not know what you want the Ladies can help you. I finally found my Mustard my Grandma brought over and it was just as I remembered it. The chocolates TO DIE FOR!!!! Haribo Gummies from Germany not the US stuff (which some would say is same its an opinion thing) The second thing I come here for, Beer doesn't count I will get that regardless, but the Pretzels you have to try them they have some as big as your head!!!!!

Edit to review below, you changed your pretzel roll! How could you! It is so obvious when they handed my bag and it was full of light fluffy rolls? And the new chocolate? No more pine bath milk... and i feel betrayed! I can get a giant fluffy pretzel roll at Costco ..yours used to be dense lovely rolls ...thay were a lunch. You succumbed and I am so disapointed ...oh well of the past is gone My review for your deli decreased from 4.5 to 3 only because if someone did not really know they probably will like it. after decades I am not complelled to go anymore thanks i have shopped a Hess bakery/ deli for 25 years...more if you count the first time I was here when I was here when they had the tiny place on Bridgeport next to the German curtian place... My kids grew up in that store with the free weiner at the deli counter...now it is a piece of sour taffy at the check out when they remember...grandson remembers ..especially when they forget! Yes pretzel rolls, sour rye and heavy whole grain bread are the best...sadly the deli meats have declined in numder and variety..over all it is a wonderful deli! The women have watched my kids grow up...forced my husband to speaked his broken German And alway provided a great picnic for us! The number of German candies is impressive

The pretzel was great - so amazing! The sandwich, it was okay - kind of small and plainish. I'm sure I would have been wowed if I had tried some of the more traditional baked goods. Next time!

This is the most charming little german bakery/grocery store that I have ever been into. It reminded me of some of the little unique shops that I ventured into when I lived down in Costa Mesa, CA. The pretzels, pretzel logs, pretzel balls, and dessert pretzels are delicious! What a treasure! You must check this out if you ever pass through Lakewood.

I love the pretzel rolls! After hearing stories about german rolls/brotchen from my sister and parents, I had to trek down to Hess so I could finally taste a little bit of Germany. If these rolls are anything like the ones that they've been talking about, then I'm a believer! I went on a Friday morning and got there right after they opened. They have german canned goods, deli meat, candy & drinks. But I was there for the bread. Not knowing what to try, I asked for one of everything and 3 pretzel rolls. I also grabbed some of their homemade mustard. Next time I go, I want to get one of the giant pretzels, I swear their bigger than a dinner plate! Once I got into the car, I broke open of the of the pretzel rolls, and it was sooo good! Make sure you eat it with the mustard, you'll thank me later. I also found out they they have a stand at the Tacoma and Puyallup Farmers Markets, so if your there check them out!

Love love love this place especially it being so close to where I live. I have ordered everything thing from bratwurst to my birthday cake. If you try anything from this place try the hazelnut cake by slice its my absolute favorite. And get there early on Saturdays they will have a amazing assortment of wonderful pastries and cookies. You can also order sandwiches that come with there German potato salad you can't go wrong with anything.

I love trying different foods, but I had no idea what kind of sandwich to order. You get to pick a meat, a cheese, and rye bread or roll. I was so pleased when the two ladies behind the counter said they would fix it right for me...they said its best to try all the meats mixed and get butter AND mustard. Anyway it was delicious and different! A fun experience! I ended up shopping for some chocolate and cereal while I was there, it is also a unique german grocery store. The breads looked great and I really want to come back to buy some. You can get sliced deli meat by the pound too! I'm excited to come back for that! The bakery was closed I was sad about that.

Wow. Just wow. I haven't heard this much German spoken this much since, well, Germany. Frankfurters, a crazy number of meats behind the case, liver sausage, and a variety of German goods that you can't find elsewhere. The brotchens were slightly heavier than I remember, but authentic - pop them in the toaster oven, put some butter and jam on these and enjoy. I'm anxious to try a few more of the breads they have for sale. If you like salami, get in here and sample a few.

Another cool thing is to check out the deli counter. There are three ladies busily wrapping cold cuts that people line up for.

Some of the bakeries taste better than what I had during a venture through Germany. I wish they made Krapfen though... I miss those donuts. The salads are great, and they make a huge supply of rolls and pretzels, but they always seem to be cleaned out by afternoon. Even more so with the bakery across the hall from the market. If you want sweets, come early! Wish it was closer.. Or do I?

Although I'm not familiar with German food, I can tell this place is authentic because of full of German-speaking customers. You can go to their deli counter and have them make a sandwich. With their freshly baked bread, you can choose all kinds of meat and cheese from counter, and they'll slice them up right in front of you. Even if you have no idea what to choose (like myself) don't worry - they'll pick the right one for you. I asked them what goes well with mustard, and their answer was "anything". Right. I still could get a great sandwich with lots of mustard. There's a grumpy old lady at the deli counter. At first I thought how I was treated could possibly be from the fact that I was the only Asian there. But according to my German friend, that's a typical old German lady and she's equal to all customers in regards of sharing her grumpiness. And pretzel! You must buy some. So chewy. They don't have any tables (or only a few, I can't recall). So most likely you need to take-out.

I seldom drive on I-5 south without a detour to Hess Bakery. A co-worker introduced me to this place years ago and I've been stopping by here for deli food and breads ever since. A visit to Hess is like being transported to a bakery in Germany. The place is full of German/Euro food items. German is often spoken. Go right to the meat counter and get a sandwich made on their famous pretzel rolls. The coldcuts offered are all premium quality. Buy a dozen pretzels to take home. Day old, cut them in half and toast 'em. Their dense rye and sourdough rye bread make terrific sandwiches. Try some hardy cheeses, European candies and food items. Next door is a dessert bakery for those needing a sugar fix.

I love this place. Selection is good, service is (gasp) friendly and it isn't too far from home. I went in last night and ordered some sliced meats and as I was walking away the woman behind the counter said "Psst! You like salami?" When I smiled and said "Yes!" she gave me a chunk to nibble on for free. They even held some bread for me to pick up after work. Oskars down in Lacey should take some lessons.

I lived in Germany for 6 years, so I can tell you this place is authentic! I'm so happy to have found it! The brotchen is delicious! The pretzels too! It's best to go here during a week day.

This place is LEGIT!!! If your a foodie, a Chef or just love great food, this place is for you!! When you first arrive you'll notice how full the parking lot is, you know your in for a real treat and well worth waiting for a parking space. When you reach the doors and you begin to enter the building the smells wafting from inside tease every sense of your being! Now, to go right or left? I suggest you peek to the right first! Your eyeballs will pop out like saucers to the sight of whats in the desert case! I then suggest you go left to shop and to ponder as to what yummy goodies from that case is going home with you!! When you walk in too the left, the actual shop, you'll find a line of customers lined up at the bakery counter/POS. (point of sale) these customers are uncharacteristically solemn and quite, I am guessing it's the anticipation of being, at the front of the line and them not being sold out of their favorite breads or pretzels! I say one of each of everything! One of the highlights of this shop is the deli case towards the back. It's a buzz among patrons as all waits for their number! They have an array of meats and sausages and delicate cheeses! * Note* I being a chef/Caterer have had a hard time locating different cheeses to make authentic fondues, this place has the BUTTERKASE cheese that is the #1 cheese in most fondue recipes! You can get it here! The ladies behind the case run the show! They are the kindest, helpful and witty bunch of gals, they make you feel welcomed as your grandmother would in her own kitchen! As you ponder around the store you'll find amazing hard to finds, from Sauces, baking mixes too pickles and mustard's! I even noticed an authentic spetzel press and a vast amount of imported beers and soft drinks, not to mention the CHOCOLATE!!! MY spouse is a 2nd generation customer of Hess's and I have to say, I was almost to selfish to write a review of this little gem that graces our own backyard! This little place should end up on all Pacific Northwestern bucket list!! Go early and go often! You owe it to your pallet!

Best German items available in the area by far. Great selection. Just writing this review makes me want to go here for lunch. You don't have to wait till October to enjoy great German cuisine, just come to Lakewood. I heard many people talk about this place for years and have never stopped in till last summer. Their rolls and pretzels are amazing. This place is hyped up for a reason.

die besten!!!! Ich liebe Kuchen? My sister just reminded me how much I love this place. German food is my comfort food for the other half of me! This place is what I picture visiting the old country must be like.. everyone speaks German, they are all Oma's, it smells like baked breads and cakes and they make you sandwich's. The store/deli has everything German you could want, the Pretzels are the most amazing pretzels that I have ever have. Try the pretzel sticks too! Across the hall you can get wonderful cakes, pastries, and pies. There display case is the most beautiful I have ever seen.. It makes me feel warm and cozy.

Reading many of these reviews brings tears to my eyes because of all the wonderful times, at both the deli and the cafe, I shared with my German mom who is no longer living. Both of these businesses ARE Little Germany right here in the PNWest! My mom and I have shopped in the deli since before I can remember, but my first memory is as a very young child eating a German pretzel bigger than my head at their former Bridgeport Way location. Throughout my life, we enjoyed weekly trips to the deli to restock our home with the freshest rolls, bread, meats, and candies from our Little Germany. Pure heaven. EVERYTHING is consistently divine! And, as one reviewer has pointed out, Christmas Eve (Christnacht in my family) celebrated with German cold cut sandwiches, sausage and German potato salad is huge, huge, huge. It is a German tradition I share with friends and family every year and it's a joy to visit the jam packed deli just to share in the happy atmosphere. I highly recommend the Meat Salad "Fleischsalat" or Black Forest smoked ham (looks like prosciutto) as an introduction to the new, German palette. Everyone seems to enjoy those the most; that is until they taste it and then they want to try all the other goodies and end up loving them too. Sometimes even the Liverwurst! Which is one of my favorites. The German cafe, which is just across the hall, is indeed a separate business from Hess' Deli, but it is equally as good in supplying a true German experience, even down to the usually "reserved" German wait staff ;D ALL the pastries are fresh and many are seasonal. One of my Mother's favorites was the plum cake and, of course, the Christmas cookies. If you want to enjoy an authentic, leisurely lunch of a German sandwich, fresh soup, delicious dessert and a wonderful cup of coffee with cream while listening to soft German music and the banter of German speaking patrons, than this is definitely the place. And don't fret over what seems to be unwelcoming German hostesses, even my very German mom would grumble about how German they were! It's all part of the experience and I wouldn't change a thing. Enjoy!

Went here for lunch today after reading the Yelp reviews and loved that most of the patrons were German. The sandwiches are good and cheap! The only downside is that parking in the lot is difficult to come by around lunch. Of course I had to stop into the pastry shop on the way out and grabbed a couple of those...had one on the way back to work...yum!

Hess' Deli is one of the culinary landmarks of the Pacific Northwest - that sounds like hyperbole for a quaint little shop in suburban Tacoma, certainly, but it's true.

Although I have never been inside I have eaten their German rolls regularly. One of my colleagues is from the old country and she frequently stops in there and brings these fantastic rolls to work for the rest of us as a treat. The delicious pretzel like rolls disappear in minutes! Never have I ever seen one at our office get left uneaten. She also brings in other treats from Hess's that are equally good. I need to go there myself to see it in person and maybe repay my colleague the favor.

Hess has been there forever and the quality is always the best. I had the good fortune to live in Germany for a few years, so I can say the food is truly authentic, especially the breads. Very friendly wait staff too. I am driven to visit them at least once a year for the pretzels. These are not like anything available in the grocery store, even the fancy schmancy ones like Whole Foods. These are straight out of a konditorei (bakery/cafe) in a German village, I kid you not...a very chewy, dense crust and a pleasingly soft, meltingly delicious inner crumb that is not in the least gluey. The perfect amount of kosher salt adds to the pleasure. And even if you're a small family or single, you can feel free to load up because they freeze well. Just put them in a tightly sealed freezer bag and they keep for weeks. Their cakes are truly delicious too...here the emphasis is on lightness and flavor, not the knock-you-over sugar punch you get from the typical American cake. German cake recipes use almond paste (marzipan) and whipped cream for filling and whipped cream for frosting in many of the cakes. The layers are often moistened with liqueur, for truly old-world flavor. You've now got a very good reason to visit Lakewood-- Hess Bakery!

This is the Holy Grail of German goods in western Washington. No one can top Hess, they are the regional bakery for German breads! I can't get a loaf home without breaking it open in the car and taking the end piece to eat while driving. YUM!!! I think the same gals have been working the meat counter since I was a kid, it makes me feel good to know they're always there for my aufschnit needs. Also, this place is swarmed the days before Christmas so all of us Germans can have our traditional Christmas Eve meals. While Hess is not typically open on Sundays (no German works on Sunday) they do open the occasional Sunday just before Christmas, especially if it falls on Monday or Tuesday. These gals make sure you get your aufschnitt and btchen for breakfast!!

Went for lunch based on reviews here. A more than welcome change of pace from the usual teriyaki and vietnamese fare common in Lakewood. The sandwiches are simple and delicious...pretzel roll sandwiches with butter and mustard are a new favorite! Will definitely be back many times over!

One of the better bakeries in Tacoma - has a European feel and taste not the ultra sweet American style bakery you may be used to.
