So, maybe I was starving. Food always tastes better after running 26.2 : ) The Burger Bar was recommended as a place to stop on our way from Portland back to Olympia, and it really hit the spot. The patty in the burger stayed nice and hot, the lettuce & tomato were cold, and the roll was soft & fresh. The onion rings are crumb battered, and very hot! Yum.

Much better places to eat in town and within 10 minute drive. I think at one time this place was good, it definitely has been around a while but that time has passed. Overpriced and bland.

I should have known that ordering seafood in a non-coastal town is a big no-no, but when I saw the Captain's Plate it just looked so... alluring. It was about 8 bucks I think, and it didn't come with a drink like all the other meals. When it came out, it was a frozen piece of halibut, three frozen scallops and three frozen shrimp. And fries and coleslaw. I mean, the fish wasn't frozen when I ate it, but it wasn't fresh, or even any part of fresh. As Brian M said, I guess I was just expecting more of a hometown feel. A restaurant where things had to be good because it was one of the only joints in town. This was not.

Can't help stopping here EVERYTIME through on I-5 === the berry milkshakes are amazing. Food is consistently good, not fabulous but always good. I love giving my money to a small, locally owned establishment who is competing head to head with the big chains. Don't miss this stop next time you're going between Portland & Seattle. And have a milkshake - you'll be glad you did!

Oh no!! I thought I was in store for something great when I ordered a $9.50 deluxe cheese with onion burger (I was on a road trip and hungry...!) and french fries. Visions of a hand-formed quarter pounder with sweet walla walla onions and toasty french fries filled my head as I anxiously waited. Parked in the drive-though, I thought it was a little strange that they told me to back up and wait in the parking lot but whatever. What arrived was a ridiculous excuse of a deluxe burger! A flimsy Sysco-fabricated flash frozen meat wafer with shriveled shredded lettuce, cold salty crinkle-cut fries and no napkins. Snap! I would give it 1.5 because I wasn't totally repulsed (I said I was hungry!), just disappointed with the burger to price ratio from a place who has "Burger" in their company name! Get it together BB!

If you are looking for an unforgettable dining experience. I highly recommend this place. We were looking for a place to eat and we thought "they named it Burger Bar..., MUST be a decent burger!" Right? Wrong! At first glance the burger seemed fine... But the smell was definitely "off" we debated the source .... I still say the buns were moldy, though the did not appear to be. It was a mold + chemical smell.... I opted NOT to eat the burger, and it was a wise decision. Everyone else paid the price.

It's......edible. Other than that, it's forgetable. Maybe I set the bar a little higher when it comes to these little independent places. We all want to find these little hidden gems. Not this time, sorry. The only way I would eat here again is if I had to eat or feed someone right NOW and couldn't go north or south for another 15 minutes. I will say it's a very clean place. In the end, it's really no better than a chain.

The service was slow and the place was empty, except for the ants on the floor. We would of had a better, and cheaper meal at McDonalds.

We have been to this place twice in two months. The first experience was less than satisfactory. The burger had an "off" taste and the bun was not fresh. The crinkle fries were tasty though. We thought we would give them another try. What a difference! Everything was fresh and full of flavor. Service was friendly and prompt. I guess it depends on the timing of your visit. It does beat McDonalds, hands down.

Prices are a bit much for the low quality fried food sold there and the serving sizes. The fries were cooked in the same oil as the fish and chicken and tasted like fish/chicken potatoes crisps. The fries were over cooked and burnt. The burger meat was sour tasting The fountain drinks are behind the counter so you can't refill your drinks which is a weak profit driving tactic. The cashier wasn't rude, but wasn't that friendly either. Employees looked as though they walked out of the gym or their beds and came to work. My experience wasn't awful, but it was still pretty disappointing and not enjoyable. A real let down. Bottom line: this place isn't worth the money or the rot gut.

If you're a bit outside the Portland area you can do worse than this place if you're in need of a quick bite to eat. I've taken the drive from the SF Bay Area up to Seattle a few times and I'll stop by here. It's right off the highway, a quiet little place. The truth is the burger is nothing remarkable but it tastes fine and was a decent size for me, and it hit the spot. It's about comfort food and when I have the choice I'd rather try a small local place than a chain like McDonalds. That can make it more hit or miss, but every once in a while you get wowed. I can't say that in this case, but my experience was good. In the end it's an average burger but it did the job for me then got me back on I-5 to move on.

I love me a good Burgerville burger and know I can get one in Woodland or Centralia on the frequent necessary trip to Seattle (I basically live out of a suitcase). But last night, I finally gave in and decided to try the Burger Bar, with this being my first stop in Kalama despite driving by here on I-5 about a gazillion times now. I almost didn't go inside the restaurant when I only saw one girl on the inside, sitting at a table and texting away. But I said what the heck, it's just another meal. The restaurant was not dirty, but it was very spartan and uninviting, bathed in a harsh fluorescent light. A girl with an overabundance of mascara, and other assorted eye makeup, was standing at the counter. She did not acknowledge me, but I said hi to here anyway. She responded with, "Do you know what you want"? Not really, but I went with a double bacon burger, a corn dog, onion rings and a large Diet Coke (total order $10.74). It didn't take long for my order to be prepared and the socially awkward and/or poorly trained and/or unfriendly girl just shoved the bag toward me on the counter. No offers of ketchup, mustard or tarter sauce. But, surprise surprise!! Back on I-5, I discovered that my corn dog was awesome and delicious. Crispy batter exterior sheathing a very decent quality dog. Yum yum!! The onion rings were satisfactory. The burger was kinda crummy. They dumped a drippy pile of mayo and bitter-tasting shredded lettuce to the burger underneath the patty. But to their credit, they did put the burger in a paper pocket that did collect the moosh that spilled from the burger. Would I come back here again? All things considered (even including the delish corn dog), the answer is no.

I used to stop here every time I came north on I-5 from points south, whether it be Battle Ground, Portland or Corvallis. On Thursday my wife and I were heading south and for the first time I stopped there heading south. Big mistake on our travel plan. It seems the restaurant has been bought by someone else. Gone are all the photos and posters on the walls associated with the town and the history of the restaurant. The service was weak. We waited for 20+ minutes for two burgers and two fries. The burgers I saw sitting on the counter for over 15 minutes while the fries were cooking. When we got our food the burgers tasted but were room temperature while the fries were so hot we had to wait to eat them. There was no apology for the slow service. Although while pacing and waiting for the food, I was "happy" to see the three members of the staff huddled in the back b.s.ing loud enough for everyone in the place to hear their stories. I won't be back. And this after probably eating there 25 times or so over the last 10 years.

I must agree with all the other reviews on this place. My boyfriend has been wanting to try this place ever since he was a little boy (almost 40 now!). So we actually went a bit out of our way to stop here. We love mom-n-pop shops & trying local spots. And he had been hearing for years about people raving how awesome their burgers are. Well, maybe those people were thinking of somewhere else cause it certainly couldn't have been this place! I must agree with others, I thought the burger was nothing more than a cheap McDonalds or Wendy's burger, even tho we had ordered the Bacon Double Burger. A plus, the place was, indeed, clean, including the bathrooms. Did take a little bit to get our food and was a bit on the cool side (which I was a bit peeved about, seeing as the food was pretty paltry). In any instance, we won't be going back, unless there is absolutely NO other option for food, including broken crackers under the car seat, and we are starving and just happen to be driving by this place. Sorry Burger Bar - we really hope you read these reviews and fix things up!

I've lived in the area for about 7 years and have eaten at the Burger Bar twice. Once when we first moved to the area, and again last year when the Mister had insisted that I had mis-remembered my negative reaction from 6 years earlier. Um. No. The other negative reviews pretty much nail it. It is overly bright and harsh inside, the service is non-existent and the food is just horrendous. The burgers are dry, the fries are soggy and the shakes are so over-sweet that you can identify neither a milk product nor whatever flavor you thought you had ordered. I **think** that there are two reasons this place still exists: Unsuspecting travellers (who then have a negative view of the entire town, not just the Burger Barf) and the 'locals' - the ones who grew up on this stuff and don't realize that it truly is vile. If you drive 11 miles either north or south, you'll find a McDonald's. Even on a bad day, you'll get a better meal.

Ok burger joint. Better than national fast food chains, not epic enough to go out of your way for, but if you get hungry on the road through Kalama, good place to stop at.

Where do you go if you've been stuck in a traffic jam on I-5 outside Kalama for half an hour and are starving? Pulling off the freeway and taking a quick trip down the town's main drag didn't reveal too many options, so I pulled in to the Burger Bar's parking lot. They've got a number of burger, chicken and seafood offerings, although they're all fried and none looked fresh or homemade. My burger was tasty but unremarkable. The fries were crispy but lukewarm. The atmosphere leaves a lot to be desired too. It's fairly clean but is decorated with way too much pro-war "support our troops" propaganda. They do have some tables outside, which is a plus. Overall I'd recommend staying on the freeway until you get to the next town where there are more and better restaurant choices.

I've been telling myself for years to stop by this place on my treks between Oregon and Washington and today I finally did. In physical appearance and mom-and-pop feel, this is the kind of place I look forward to trying. Unfortunately, after my visit, I would be hard pressed to decide between a burger from this place and some warmed over dregs from McDonald's. It pains me to write that about a small shop, but, wow... they set the bar low and nailed it. The beef was so thin and so bland. I'm sure there are some beefier tasting VEGGIE burgers out there. Remember the old Wendy's "Where's the beef?" commercials? Did those writers visit this place before coming up with that slogan? I had a bacon cheeseburger combo on my visit and I'm not sure either the cheese or bacon added much to the experience. In fact, the bacon might have subtracted a little as it had an off flavor instead of having a satisfying bacon taste. The lettuce is shredded, and whatever sauce was on the burger combined with that shredded lettuce might have been the strongest notes. That's concerning when in the presence of beef, cheese, and bacon. About the nicest thing I can say about the burger is that the bun was fresh and soft, and seemed well prepared and warm. The fries are standard crinkle cut fries. Not bad... maybe a little unevenly cooked. I'd guess the Burger Bar probably does well selling cheap burgers to hungry local teenagers. If you care about the kind of burger you eat and aren't just looking for a swallow-it-quick-before-I-taste it experience (if you taste much anyway), look elsewhere. Nearly any fast food chain will be at least a little bit superior, if not a lot.

I was sorely disappointed after eating here. Although the burger was fresh...it wasn't that small town great burger I was expecting. The fries were of the Ore Ida variety...served hot....but again expecting something more.

A favorite place to stop for a bite on our travels from here to there. Reminds me of another time. Yes its interior is outdated, but its supposed to look that way. Its from a different era. Burgers are good! No they are not the best I've ever had, but they are satisfying and made to order. They come in a paper pocket for those who will be driving and eating. I love the crinkle cut fries that most likely come from a frozen bag, yum, and I love the onion rings too! PS get a shake, they are delicious! I have never met any of the staff that was uninviting. On the quiet side maybe, but hey not everyone is great at communicating, or comes from a bigger city setting where they have to be more open so don't be so judgemental. All in all I love this place and I will continue to be a returning customer along with my family and friends. Don't knock it until you try it for your self.

Classic burger bar. Does need some work. We are here this week and I don't mind the inside, it's just dirty! Food on the walls, kinda gross. However, the food is pretty good. Priced a little higher than expected since my last visit. Chicken strip basket only came with two, unseasoned strips. I'll be getting those from the Chevron instead. The burger was decent, but not worth the price. May or may not return.

Was surprised to see the average rating so low. The $4 deluxe burger is made from 1/2 beef patty. The small burgers are only $2. Shakes were very thick and good. Very good stop heading to Portland

Had high hopes for a place called "BurgerBar" but... We saw a sign for burgers after Mount St Helens. Exited for Kalama. Pulled up to the drive through. Had to push a gross button. Bitchy girl took our orders and then told us to **park our car to the side, someone will bring our food to us** I watch as a kid comes through the door with a vat of grease which he poured into the dumpster RIGHT BY THE DRIVE THROUGH. We wait for like 15 minutes. SAME KID BRINGS US OUR FOOD. No apron, no gloves. Just puberty & grease. The burgers tasted cheaper than Burger King's 99¢ burgers (God help me for knowing that) and the fries were LIQUIDY AND NOT COOKED. Skip Kalama & their shithole "burger bar"

Best Burger in WA! I mean if you order something as simple as a cheeseburger and to be that good. You are definitely something very good. Story is.. we pass by here so many times going to Portland and I always wanted to try it and we finally did! It is in a small town near an antique mall and Chinese restaurant. A classic feel. They posted they have pumpkin milkshake and that was what I wanted to hear as I only wanted a milkshake since I had quite a bit prior to stopping here. But why not, since we're here, let's try a small cheeseburger and fries. Everything was good! The burger was tender and moist, perfectly cooked, not dry and with tasty burger sauce. The fries were crinkle cut and very good. The pumpkin milkshake, oh man, was the best! Got to come back! Too bad it is so far away..

Please stop serving those awful excuses for burgers & just change your name to Fish Bar. Your Fish & chips & onion rings were actually pretty good so when my husband took a bite of the burger & said it tasted foul I had to take a bite. Worst burger I've ever tasted. Not sure if the meat was rotten or if you just choose to serve less than school cafeteria quality burgers but it was SO BAD! You were nice enough to take the burger back & make him a fish sandwich instead. You really should consider changing your focus to fish if you can't manage to make a half way decent hamburger.

Decent grease spoon - you get what you are expecting. Now and then, this is the kind of food you are wanting...but not every day. They do a lot with what they have to work with - frozen patties and deep fryers. Fun atmosphere (old pictures and dated posters), friendly service, good local spot or when you are driving through.

Drive right by this joint. Truly awful. Burger so thin you could almost see through it and for only $5. If it hadn't been for my kids being so hungry I'd of returned everything and asked for my money back. What a dump and the food was simply terrible. All of it. Even the shakes, cheap ice cream with artificial flavorings.

Don't even think about it. A processed bacon circle on my burger? The thickness of a paper towel..........I live locally and tried this place 3 times hoping the last time was a fluke. No. It's just gross. I keep hoping for an old fashion burger and fries. It's just not that. I do appreciate the politeness of the kids that work there.

Place used to have some actually decent food. Recently went in with some friends, and it has gone way downhill from when I last remember. I was hungry, so I still ate my food, but it just wasn't that good. Cheapish, but not that tasty or memorable.

I've stopped here once or twice on the way to or from home to visit pals in the Portland area. Last time was on the way home a few days after Thanksgiving 2010. I had a fish burger which was small but quite tasty, onion rings that were pretty okay and a marshmallow milkshake that was SO amazing my eyes rolled back into my head. Thank goodness I was parked in the lot and hadn't yet left the premises; otherwise lives would have been endangered while I was recovering from my rapture behind the wheel of my car. The young woman taking the orders (and running them out to the people waiting) was cheerful, friendly and very sweet. I feel I may have overpaid a bit for the sandwich and rings but they could charge triple for that milkshake and it still would have been a bargain. However, it should come with a stern warning to not take the first sip while driving!

Yelp is currently mis-mapping this place. It is in downtown Kalama, just off I-5... But I'm not complaining -- if the wrong map location keeps more people from wasting their time here, that's a win-win. It must remain in business on the mis-spent money of clueless travelers like me, who in stupid optimism hope it will be a small town mom-and-pop burger joint. Alas. Harsh neon light illuminates a reasonably clean but spartan and unappealing interior that is eclectically (that's a euphemism for 'incoherently') decorated with random US Navy stuff. Clearly the proprietor is a patriot, but it turns out the sort of misdirected patriot who can't even serve a burger that would make me proud to be an American. The bacon cheeseburger with -- you guessed it-- American cheese was ok, but just barely. Fries were a bit cold and definitely under par. Shake flavors were lame and the shake was just average. The service was totally consistent with the rest of the experience. If I'm going to lay down my life for my country by eating greasy food, i at least want to enjoy the privilege. It isn't awful, but it just fails to deliver on too many basics.
