Had some nice romantic dinners here with good specials and a bottle or two of wine. I understand they have some cool events with live music, but it's a bit outside my normal radar for meals, especially at a higher price point. A worthy destination for the romantic couple or group of intimate friends (it's tiny). I've not had their breakfast but sure would like to try it! The owner is passionate and committed to this space, putting a lot into overhauling the facility to make the model work in a tough spot. Easy to drive by if you're going too fast, although they've bumped up the bright signage! Take it easy after the curve out of Deming and look for it on your right.

I signed up for yelp just to say this is the best food on the mount baker highway, probably Whatcom county. Eat there, if you're disappointed you should reexamine your life.

Had gelato here which was fantastic. Went with a combo of pistachio, peach, and mango which was something you don't usually find in gelato shops. Service is friendly, a bit slow but worth it. The tea is also really nice, many different types and a variety of snacks to go with it like peanut butter scones and little nut bars. Haven't hit this place up for a full meal yet, but as far as a standard cafe goes, this'll do the job well.

Have you ever been to Dinner? Have you Ever been to a Ballet? Have you had both of these outside together? Well I have to say Il Caffe Rifugio Restaurante is doing this this Friday and Saturday Aug 9th and 10th. Tell me your story if you have. If you have not come out to this event.

Best restaurant ever. Wonderful food...perfect ambiance. Highlight of my trip to northern Washington. Awesome owner.. best food of the entire 10 day trip! 1. Don't come here rushed. Enjoy the beautiful outdoor deck or inside ambiance/couch and RELAX... this is going to be worth it! 2. OMG the food was PHENOMENAL 3. I wouldn't change anything about this place other than move it to Kansas City so I could enjoy it once a week!

Based on the simplicity of the outside, you'd never know how amazing the food is inside. The meatloaf with mustard seed and diced tomatoes was seasoned beautifully and set on top the best polenta I've ever eaten. The owner Richard has done an superb job combining a great menu with an incredibly cute place on the inside. Worth every effort getting there!

Absolutely amazing restaurant... Whether you're on your way up to ski/hike and are in a hurry to get a mouthwateringly delicious pesto bacon/turkey and egg burrito and some perfectly roasted coffee - in and out in 10 minutes.. Oh, you want something more than road grub for your AM meal? Well, you can have a full feast if you would like...Or are you coming off of the hill ready for a pasta dish and some local cold beer? Donezo. My girlfriend said she felt like she was in a five star restaurant that had yet to be discovered. Oh, and the owner is one cool cat. This should be the place every skier/boarder/hiker stops at on their way up 542.

Charming little find on the way to Mt. Baker. Food is outstanding - we had coffee & delicious freshly baked muffins on the way up, was so good we decided to return for dinner. Dinner was outstanding - split a bottle of wine which was reasonably priced & very nice, recommended by owner. The Eggplant Lasagna was spectacular: full of flavor, smaller pasta combined with a pesto infused sauce was worthy of any restaurant. Dinner salad also very good. Topped off the meal with small, richly flavored individual bundt cakes...chocolate with cherries..just made a meal which made us decided to take the trip from Seattle again just for the food. Owner & wait staff are pleasant and conversational; both made suggestions & were very friendly. Service is low key & casual; if you want to be waited on hand & foot this isn't your place but if you enjoy pleasant surroundings (both inside & outside seating--we ate on the patio) where you are treated like family and encouraged to relax & enjoy the food this is the place. Highly recommend but not for people in a rush.

I would like to give this place another star, but...................The place is nice, I like what the owner did with it, it looks pretty... they have seating outside and then really outside with communal tables and a stage (for shows)...I love the set up! The food is good, more than good and like anything good, takes a little longer...so don't go here if you don't have time to wait. I have come to this place five or six times, with different people and different circumstances. Every time I go, it's like I am coming for the first time, the owner won't remember you, and that is horrible when it comes to a restaurant! As a customer, you want to be remembered and treated as someone that is important to the establishment, someone that is going to return. It's ok if you are the owner of a restaurant and can't remember faces, you can always hire someone to do that, someone who knows when to fire the entree on time (so that you don't have to wait for it longer than you should), when to ask you if you need another glass of wine ( and not when you are done with your meal), etc; but the front of the house is just as inexperienced, they have no idea....and that is a pity, because for a restaurant to be good, it has to have a good team, something that is absent in this place. This is for the owner if he reads this feedback: Although Pizza is on the menu, both times I ordered it, the oven was off, so I had to wait for the oven to heat up; the final product was a pizza that was not cooked all the way in the center, because the oven was not hot enough, that is ridiculous, either have the oven on until you close, or just say you are not serving it. The last time I visited this place, we were seating outside, and the waitress forgot to bring the right amount of plates, we were four and she had it in her head that we were three, anyway, as I was coming out of the restroom, the owner whistled at me and handed me the plate that the waitress had forgotten to bring out for the second time, so there I was walking back to my table with a plate in my hand! that made me feel so bad...what a lack of respect for a paying and repeat customer.

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal here last night. I had a perfectly seasoned and cooked tuna steak with cheesy polenta and grilled zucchini while the hubby had a seafood stew that had just the right balance of seafood and sausage. This place may be a bit out of the way but it is well worth the scenic drive! Enjoy!

This place was a dark, crusty diner back in the day and underwent several iterations before ending up as Il Caffe Rifugio in the present day. It's located on Hwy. 542, just past Deming, and only open Thursday - Sunday from 8am to 8pm. The interior is nicely re-done, open and bright and there is a lovely covered patio which is where we chose to eat on the lovely summer day we visited. There is a little alcove with a water pitcher that you can serve yourself and the water is flavored with lemons, a nice touch. It's run almost single-handledly by the owner, who seems like a genuinely nice guy and happy to chat with the customers. There is a general cafe menu of sandwiches and salads for lunch, and the dinner menu is a short list of the daily specials, so everything is fresh and in season. And the food, oh the food! We started with salads, which were simply delicious - that is simple, delicious, and simply delicious all together. Three of us ordered the curry tortellini which was an interesting combination of Indian and Italian - also delicious, but with a spicy kick that had me running back to the lemon water several times. The last member of our group ordered a chicken and asparagus dish that looked divine. As much as I enjoyed my tortellini, I wish I had ordered that instead. We finished up with a chocolate covered carrot cake for dessert and this was the only low note. The cake was a bit dry and the chocolate a bit thick. Overall it wasn't bad, but we wished we had saved our dessert calories for something a bit more decadent and satisfying. Prices are a bit high for the area, but completely reasonable for the quality of food and low by Seattle standards. This will probably become one of our regular stops in the future. As a bonus, I absolutely love their gorgeous bathroom sink.

Great spot for a burger or sandwich on the way home from mt baker. Recipes are innovative and fun to try. This makes for a meal that will taste different and better than your typical greasy burger on the way home from skiing. I had the pulled pork sandwich with a potato pancake inside and it was very good.

I tried this place recently. My husband and I were both very pleased with the food. Bread was homemade and perfect. Salad was tasty and totally fresh. Our main dishes were awesome and the owner made one of the dishes vegetarian for me. The owner recommended a perfect wine to complement my meal. My husband enjoys a good ipa beer and was pleased to be served a fresh chilled half growler from a Bellingham brewery. If you live in Bellingham, it is well worth the drive. I plan to go again but especially in late spring when I can sit outside and look at the rhododendrons.

I live 20+ minutes away from this cafe and I would commute the any day to eat there. A friend and I were driving by and very hungry so when we saw the sign we pulled over. I saw the place quite a few years ago when the old owner had it and let me tell you the remodel is amazing! so comfortable! I ordered their artichoke pizza and added chicken. We have quite a few really good pizza places in Bellingham where I live and this by far was the best pizza and service I have ever had. I left knowing the owner and wanting to support this restaurant anytime I can. This is a must try. You will fall in love with it! The owner alone is a reason to support this place, he is amazing. Thanks Richard!

Wonderful find on the Mt Baker Hwy. Owner is extremely friendly and incentive with the food. Great lamb pot Pie and a wonderful basil white chocolate scone. The kind of food you'd expect I'm town not at a roadside stop. Nice bright ambience as well. Other people friendly, good suggestions about what to see in the area.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
