Jalapeños Mexican Family Restaurant Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

The food was pretty good. Though, the restaurant itself was not pretty good. The restaurant is about 12 blocks from Bellingham Station. If you're thinking of going to Jalapeños, the WTA is a really good way to get there. Anyway, I ordered a burrito with beans and cheese from the vegetarian menu. It was honestly pretty good. I really liked their fried vegetables. I also tried a little of a friend's raspberry margarita. It was tasty. :) The restaurant itself, though, is very loud, smaller than it should be, a little expensive, and the restrooms are weird.

I hate Mexican food but my husband loves it. There have only been a couple things I've liked over the years so I was amazed to discover Jalepenos. Everything was seasoned well, fresh and delicious. They've managed to make me a Mexican food fan and that ain't easy.

This is the BEST Mexican place in Bellingham!! Whenever I go for Mexican, I always go to Jalepenos and get the mole verde enchiladas! Tangy flavor and SO good!

Hey! have you considered lapsing into a food coma this afternoon? Then consider the fine Mexican food available from Jalapenos. Served on a desk sized platter and accompanied by a fish bowl of a margarita you will be happily stuffed for hours. It is the perfect kickoff to a long nap. Jalapenos is Fantastic. Fair warning though, their portions are enormous so consider splitting the plate or having just an appetizer.

A great place for drinks and sunny days! PROs: * Big mama's! As well as other drink specials made this a nice spot to go to while we were in college. * If you're able to score some outdoor seating on a sunny day, it's actually pretty awesome! * Food and drinks are pretty cheap! So yes college students, this a great spot for you ;) CONs: * The food is forgettable. I can't say I ever ate anything here that WOW'd me... but the food is decent * This place gets busssssy. If you plan on coming here with some buddies, come early, or at the least, expect to be hanging out for awhile. * It gets pretty loud up in this place. With the obvious combination of a full house plus college students it's not surprising. OTHER COMMENTS: * Every time I came here it was packed with other college students... which was fine for me! But if you were hoping for a quiet sit down dinner... yah.. think again... FINAL THOUGHTS: To be honest with you... I always came here to DRINK. Ordering food was usually just to put something in my stomach. They had pretty standard Mexican food... nothing really impressive. However it's pretty awesome to kick back with some appetizers and drinks along with friends outside on a sunny day. If you're a college student you owe it to yourself to get a big mama... and yes pay extra for the extra shot, you know what you came here for!

The food here is decent American style Mexican, but the atmosphere is not very nice. It's a fairly run down building, and has a definite "smell" within the restaurant. If you want to try this, I'd recommend their Fairhaven or Barkley location over the downtown restaurant.

#209 on Bellingham's Yelp list? Really?? Anyway, this place is a tequila lovers heaven just for the Big Mamas. May not be the most authentic Mexican around, but the black bean enchiladas were my go to. Very popular spot for Western students to have dinner, pre funk, and then head up to Railroad.

Popped in for lunch on Saturday and found this restaurant by accident. Atmosphere felt Mexican and were seated right away. Neither of us were hungry for a full dinner (there is no lunch menu on the weekends) so we shared the Tower of appetizers. It was delishious and more than enough for two. Our server was a sweetheart; attentive and personable. We will go back - next time I'm adding a Tequila shot or a Margherita.

I went to Jalapenos when visiting Bellingham with a few friends. It was okay. We each got a drink which were all good- I got the pina colada, my friends got the blackberry margarita and the Volcano drink which was one of those huge concoctions with several liquors. We shared the sampler plate which had taquitos, mini bean and cheese burritos, quesadillas, and jalapeno poppers. It was all just okay. I realize we ordered all fried appetizers so maybe the normal entree plates are better but they all tasted like pre-made appetizers. The plate was $15 and three of us shared it. Service was nice. Seems like a very popular location!

My family is from Mexico so I generally rate Mexican food based on how my Grandmother makes it! I have never had something that I disliked at Jalapenos. I admit that sometimes the speed of service is not the best, although I've never been particularly unhappy with it. They are just SO busy, which to me is a testament to how popular they are and how good the food is. Yes, the Big Mamas are amazing. I definitely recommend paying the extra buck or two for upgrading the tequila (I think Milagro is a good choice because it's not an expensive upgrade and tastes great.) You take a bit of a gamble getting well tequila because it's not always silver and Anejo tequila is just not good for a margarita. The waiting area is tiny and right in front of the door, so it's inconvenient and you're in people's way. It is old and could be classified as a bit of a dive, but I kind of like that. The servers are wonderful and once you order the food comes pretty quickly. This is definitely the best Mexican place in Bellingham. Note: happy hour pricing only applies to the "standard" Big Mama. If you upgrade the tequila or get it blended it is regular price (which is kind of lame).

I really hate to give a bad review. I know people work hard at their jobs, that every restaurant was somebody's dream at some point. But, oh, the food here was foul. Seriously, some of the worst food I have ever had. I ordered the carne asada burrito lunch combo. What I got was a flour tortilla with a couple pf chunks of bland fried beef and bitter iceberg lettuce about the size of a wallet. Seriously, that was all there was in it, and it cost me almost $9 for this abomination. The beans and rice were actually ok, which was good because I was starving. The only reason I am giving it 2 stars instead of 1 is because my mom liked her meal and the wait staff were very nice and attentive. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing, maybe it was a bad day, but either way I don't know I could eat here again. Note to Disabled: Reasonably accessible, has its own parking lot

The Arroz con Pollo is the best. I felt compelled to write this because I feel like their service is majorly slipping. I have been coming here with family and friends for the last couple years and have not had any issues. But last night my boyfriend and I ordered our usual and about half way through pulled out a long stringy piece of plastic out of his mouth. We both felt ill immediately and they comped the meal (not the drinks) but we were really disappointed.

A lot of college kids come here to eat. The plates are hardy and filling and everything you would expect from a Mexican restaurant. The atmosphere is loud and busy and very colorful, and its a fun place to go with a group and get wasted. But if you want a quiet place to converse you're in the wrong spot. The food was good and the waitresses are friendly and sweet. Nice spot.

some of the staff should be careful what they say in Spanish to each other of all people of whom you would not expect to speak Spanish does so fluently It is very rude to speak a language when a second party is preset is assumed not to speak Spanish so things being said between employees the food is good mexican for Bellingham that being said it's not that great

Relatives turned us 'out-of-towners' on to this restaurant. Food was good but only average for a typical Mexican sit-down restaurant.

I am the biggest fan of this restaurant! The big momma's are too die for!! I always order the chicken fajitas because they give you so much for your money. (Helpful hint... share with a friend!) Friendly staff, and even when there is a wait they manage to seat you in a timely manner. The building is a little old and outdated... but it definitely adds character. & The only downside is that this place is LOUD! But that's because the restaurant is little. If the sound bothers you I suggesting going to the Jalapenos in Fairhaven. This place is totally "Bellingham". Locals everywhere and right next to the beloved Bellingham Bay. If you've never been please stop by! You won't regret it. :)

I think Jalapenos' will be my regular Mex food stop in Bellingham from now on when I venture down south. The food here was pretty good and their patio was great on a hot summer's day. The fresh fruit margaritas were delicious! I've never had a raspberry margarita before coming here. It was awesome, and they definitely didn't skimp out on the alcohol. Everything food-wise was delicious. The pollo a la diabla actually was spicy, unlike at other Mexican restaurants. I shared the 5 different enchiladas combo. It was really good, but we wished there was more sauce on them. We like it saucy! But if it did have more sauce, esp. on the chipotle one, it might have been too spicy. So I guess it was well balanced. Rice and beans were good too.

Crap service, crap food & crap drinks. The happy hour is appealing until you try to order - the food may or may not arrive and the margaritas were terrible (even with upgraded tequila). A bummer in this otherwise great town!

  • Rebecca L.

Get a margarita, first thing. Doesn't matter what kind, just order a lime something on the rocks. AWESOME every time. All of their food is amazing, but I recommend the veggie fajitas and nearly any burrito.

Wow, what a great place, My Girlfriend and I ate their in July of 2011, and we both were fan's. Amazing proportions, with great quality. not bad prices either, all add's up to a great place, I will be back.

In Bellingham you're hard-pressed to find decent Mexican food but there really isn't a need to search further than Jalapeno's. The food is good, the menu is extensive, and the plates are huge. They have nice selection of seafood options and a pretty good vegetarian selection. They serve all the normal stuff, tostadas, tacos, carne asada, carnitas, fajitas, burritos, chille relleno, chimichangas, enchiladas etc. The menu is available online. You can also do combos. The complimentary chips and salsa are great. The main thing this place is known for are the Big Momma Margaritas which are huge and loaded with tequila, but they also have sangria. Best Mexican place in town, no need to try elsewhere.

Every time I'm in Bellingham, I have to hit up Jalapeno's. This place was a staple when I went to school at Western - I definitely ate here often. Now every time I'm back in the area, I have to visit. Decent Mexican food, delicious salsa, tons of menu options, and friendly wait staff. Recommendations: the potato burrito is HUGE and delicious. I've also enjoyed their taco salads (so cliche, I know) as well as some of the combination meals. There's tons to choose from, so there's bound to be something for everyone. I hear Happy Hour is fantastic...?

This is a review strictly for the service. I would love to have tried the food and let you know about that, but lets say I couldn't. Showed up with a group of 8 of us around 3:30 in the afternoon. We had called ahead so they knew we were coming. When we arrived they sat us promptly. Then all hell broke loose. We sat, and sat, and waited some more. Being that I had to be at work by 5:00 I needed a quick pale ale and a taco. Enough time right? Heck no. The busser girl said she would send the server over, she never came. The girl at the door said they were changing waitresses so we would have one soon. An hour into it someone finally came over to take our drink order. Then that took some time too. By 4:45 I had to chug my beer and race to work. Lets just say I won't be going back!!! Do yourself a favor and go to Chuckanut down the street.

The food is good. A little expensive for my tastes, but for some people that is alright. We used to go here for Big Mammas (Giant margaritas) all the time, but have faded away from them recently. Is it just me or do they keep getting more expensive and less-potent. I can't remember where I heard this, but it's actually a tequila flavored liqueur in their margaritas. So for those of you that tequila does bad things to you, you should be a little more in the clear. That being said these things used to f**k you up! I swear they make the second one stronger cause these things will get ya!" Again their drink prices are a little more expensive than other places in bham, but if you've never been you gotta go. At least just to say you've tried a big mamma! Enjoy!

I love Jalapenos. It's my favourite of the Bellingham Mexi-places for a few good reasons: 1) The drinks there are outstanding. And outstandingly cheap. 2) Happy hour. 3) Salsa bar. 4) Food's pretty good too. I have a soft spot for dive-y places that are gems in the rough. Jalapenos looks like it's been there for a long time -- and judging by the graffiti in bathrooms, it has. But that's just pure charm. Chances are if you're going to Jalapenos you're going because you wanna drink something. And this place is probably the best place to get your swerve on that I've ever been to. The marg varieties are all good (and stiff) and the beer is cheap. I also tried their Volcano drink once... and that was the end of my night. Even when one shares it's still basically a bowl of liquor... on fire. What's not to like? The food is average+ for Mexican stuff. Their salsas are pretty good, the asada's tasty, the carnitas is good. And it's consistent, which is a very good thing. Service is usually good and there's enough of a family vibe there that it works when you have kids. I really like the place and I've been back several times.

Big Mama! BIG MAMA! oh yeah big mama's! Ok so i can't review the food other than the chips and dip which were yummy and they kept them coming which I appreciated considering the liqour we were drinking. The big mama's are margaritas the size of your head and they are about the quality you expect from something that big... lacking but oh wow do they do the trick. Two of those and I was toasted... the bathroom, which I frequented quite a bit cause i was drinking my dinner was a touch grimy but it worked... If you're looking for a place that will get you buzzed and quickly than this is a good place... also good for after work/school drinks with friends over salsa.

Jalapenos is the place to go if you're... 1) A Multi-Generational Family 2) A Large Group of College Kids and last, but not least... 3) Newly 21 (or just want to act like it). The food is delicious. The drinks are stiff. I have yet to experience a dish I didn't like - It's exactly what you expect from a local family Mexican restaurant, and the atmosphere is inviting. If you're a college kid, Big Mamas are an excellent way to start your night of partying... Or end it if you're a lightweight. Whether you're a student looking for a good time or someone just enjoying what Bellingham has to offer, Jalapenos is a must.

Jalapenos is my favorite mexican place in Bellingham. One gripe: if you are going there with a large group, be prepared for the mandatory tip and for them not to split the bill for you. That was annoying, and a hassle. Kept us there for a long amount of time as people were unable to calculate exactly how much was owed per person with the tip, as they would not calculate it for us and it was an odd amount to split up. (I know, we could use a calculator, but it was a birthday and some people had bought drinks for others, etc.) Big Mamas are delicious and a good price. Eating outside is nice. Food is fantastic. I just wouldn't recommend going with a large group. I know I won't be doing so again.

I was disappointed on my last visit to Jalapenos. Besides the always great Big Mama Margarita, our food left much to be desired. My boyfriend and I ordered the seafood chimichanga for $15.95. The menu said it would be filled with "scallops, shrimp, halibut and calamari." It arrived a tiny, flat, doughy, greasy little pocket on a bed of rice with a few tiny scallops that were undercooked and had a mildly fishy off flavor. We ordered a side of beans (add another $3.75) to go with the $15 worth of rice plate and we were given an entire standard-Mexican-restaurant platefull -- more like a moat of beans. The bill was about $40. We won't be coming back anytime soon. At least not for the food.

This is definitely an interesting Mexican restaurant. When I first walked in, it kind of reminded me of an old diner from the 1970s? Don't quote me on the year though, I wasn't even born yet! My partner and I ordered our food and within a couple of minutes, tortilla chips and two dippings came along with it. I love their salsa. It's fresh homemade salsa (at least it tasted like it).The other dipping bowl kind of tasted like pasta tomato sauce? We didn't really dig that bowl too much. By the time our food came, we were kind of full from eating so many chips! He ordered a sampler of some sort and I had chicken/mushroom on rice with chipotle sauce. I really enjoyed my dish, but my partner didn't like his too much. Overall, the food was really good. Don't stuff yourselves with the chips or else you won't enjoy your meal!

My review is including service as well as the food. Food would be 3 stars, mediocre with a general lack of flavor. It was the service that ruined the experience. It took twenty minutes to seat us and clearly the server wanted to be somewhere else. I know I did.

So, on my last trip up to Bham I ate at Jalapenos THREE times (in 5 days). I'm a born and raised Mexican from Los Angeles and I can tell you food at Jalapenos tastes like grandma's cooking. Although, I don't think grandma ever poured such a stiff drink :) All I can think about down here is the next time I can get up there for a chimichanga and a Big Mamma.... The salsas are delicious. The chips could be better, but at least they don't taste like they came from a bag. They have amazing vegetarian options (veggie paella? don't mind if I do~) which makes me a very happy camper. Try the enchiladas de mole, if you've never had mole it will be an experience! Super rich, super good food in a chill atmosphere: the way every good Mexican restaurant should be.

Happy hour is everyday is from 11 am - 5 pm. And if you're 21+, I suggest the big mama (lime) on the rocks. For under 5 bucks, and about 5 shots of tequila, I'd say it's well worth it. Be prepared for a very stiff drink. Their other big mamas (blended fruity ones) are delicious as well, however they're around $11, so a bit more pricey. A big mama on the rocks with the pico de gallo and chips is enough to fill you up.

  • Devin B.

The main reason we ever came were for cheap Big Mama's. You don't need many. I made the mistake of taking down three one night and ended up with 20 stitches in my foot the next day. WARNING! If consuming Big Mama's, DON'T wear sandals!

    (4)
  • Dave S.

Food was good, service was good... Over all a good experience. However, it is kinda noisy or at least it was when we went. But if you dont mind some noise and want some good food I suggest checking this place out, plus you may even see a train go by :)

Owner is extremely racist to asians. He absolutely despise them. I will never visit this restaurant again! My girlfriend slipped on their step when they have no warning Sign on the step! The owners is extremely presumptuous! He instantly assumed my gf was drunk when she only had one drink and threatened to called the police when I started taking photos. Reluctant to pick up the phone an provide his name. Bad business practice and worst service in town! I do not recommend visiting!!' BEWARE!

We arrived with a huge group and Jalapenos was able to accommodate us. It must be noted that we made reservations in advance for our group, but we still had to wait 1/2 hr plus for our table and stood in the teeny tiny waiting area in everyone's way. Loves- I had one famous Big Mama ($8) and I was good for the entire night There was an extensive menu with many choices for the health conscious The bill came w/ a tallysheet- you could record your name + money paid Our server never seemed overwhelmed with having 20+ people The food was good Dislikes- I had a headache the next day from the Big Mama- I am not a light weight The reservation didn't seem to make a difference in our wait time What I ate could have been better (a combo with a enchilada and taco) Ps- The HH Big Mama's are $5

This is the worst mexican restaurant in Bellingham! The food is over priced and not appetizing at all! I got the fish tacos for lunch the other day, thought they were a bit spendy but that's what I really wanted so went for it! I got three itty bitty tortillas with a little bit of fish. Under the fish were a few shreds of cheddar cheese and a few shreds of romaine lettuce totally wilted and brown! I couldn't hardly eat it! And it was about 15 dollars!! That was not the first time going there, and I have never been impressed. I was talked into trying the new location by a friend. I will never fall for that again. Although it looks cleaner than the waterfront location, do not be fooled! It is still HORRIBLE food!! And the big mama margaritas are just big glasses with lots of ice and cheap tequila!!

Still on the hunt for the best Mexican Restaurant, however, this one came close. I was a little annoyed that we weren't acknowledged when we were to wait to be seated for a good 5+ minutes, none of the staff wanted to make eye contact with us. For the record the restaurant wasn't even busy. Thankfully the service was decent to make up for it and they even let my best friend and the dude I am dating hang around for a good 20 or so minutes after we paid the bill to "catch up". I stuck with the appie platter so that I could stay within my weight watchers points and not over stuff myself. It was good, lacked in flavor in some parts, however, it wasn't as greasy as other places, therefore, it earned my props. Considering the amount of appies on the plate vs. the price of $14, it seemed a little bit of a rip off. I noticed on yelp that they seem to get a lot of awesome reviews on the drink department, however, so-so reviews on the food. Sadly I do not drink, therefore, my judgment is purely based on food. I've had better Mexican from a food truck in L.A. but so far I seem to get closer and closer to decent Mexican food.

Came on a Wednesday for dinner. Took forever to seat us -- then took forever for our waitress to take our order. I wanted to give up and leave but my buddy wanted to stay. Everything from then on was timely. Service friendly. The food was average at best. Tough greasy meat. Thin tortillas. The place is a dump. Carpet is dirty and patched. The bench seat was THE most uncomfortable thing meant to be sat on that I have ever sat on. I sat blinded by the sun...window screens would make things more comfortable. Some kid marked the wall in front of me with crayon. Crumbs all over my seat when I was seated. If the interior is that bad I dread what the kitchen must be like! I won't be back. Can't throw a rock without hitting a Mexican restaurant.

  • Randi S.

It's a typical americanized mexican food joint, located near the waterfront in Bellingham. The lunch specials were decently priced (around $7) and the portions were huge. Their chips were also not the kind that come out of a bag. The only thing I would suggest is that it needs an upgrade..it seemed a little dirty and forlorn, but not a surprise to me considering it's a "typical" mexican restaurant. The servers were polite and friendly.

    (3)
  • Bob C.

I went there for lunch. Not many people there at that time, so you would think the service would be excellent - not! The food is average, but what can you expect from so far from the boarder. This place seems like it would be better for a hydraulic dinner. :)

Loved it, highly reccomend calling ahead for reservations. This place saved my weekend! Great margaritas, great food and the menu is so huge it's almost too much to choose from. Almost forgot to mention this, it's a divey mexican place (in a good way) with a fantastic view from the back tables! Too fun.

    (5)
  • Ashley S.

The food is pretty good, but I am here to rave about the happy hour specials! Don't leave without getting a Big Mama and Nachos. One Big Mama will be enough for you! A plate of nachos will feed a crew of 4 or 5 people easy! Fun place to go with a good group of friends!

  • Jahan D.

Jalapenos is perhaps the worst Mexican restaurant I have ever been to in my life. I have no idea why it has 4 stars on here. I ordered a chicken burrito that arrived cold on top of a soupy mess of beans. To make matters worse the chicken meat was poor quality, and the burrito was overstuffed with wilted old lettuce. Their new location in Fairhaven (Milagros) is equally bad. Don't let the good reviews sway you, this place is horrible!

Great food, service could be more attentive, will visit again!

Every time I come back to Bellingham - I come to Jalapenos. Mostly for the giant margaritas (aka Big Mama's). If you come during happy hour you can get these suckers for 6 bucks and believe me... you will be toasted about about 1.5 of them. The food is pretty decent too, alot better than Azteca or even Rositas. It is a bit rundown, but I think it just adds the atmosphere. Happy Hour is amazing and runs from noon to five. Really worth a trip if you are ever up in the Ham.

  • Cicero D.

The food was pretty good. I'm glad there's some pretty good Mexican food in Bellingham... and no, I'm not a fan of the potato burrito... I'd rather go to Taco Bell. Like I was saying, I love the food. But I had to take away a star because our margaritas were pretty nasty. They were strong, but it didn't taste like a margarita at all. I guess you should avoid the specials, especially when they make big batches of it.

    (4)
  • Larkin R.

The margaritas here are the stuff of legend. If you are brave enough to order El Vulcan all by yourself, you will be in for an interesting night for sure. Big mamas are always a reliable start to an evening of craziness. The food is not bad- i'd definately eat here before i went to a chain like azteca, but I'd recommend just hitting up Jalapenos for the drinks to start off a crawl through town.

    (4)
  • Emily H.

I will start by saying, Big Mama's (a rumored three to seven shots depending on the bartender) should come with warning labels. Devin B. says don't wear sandals and I say don't come here for a work/school meeting. It only took me one Big Mama to start telling stories that should not have been shared with coworkers, and let me tell you, I still have yet to live this down. The food is good, although it is a little overpriced for americanized mexican food. They are more than willing to accommodate large groups... even without reservations. Sit by the window for a view of the bay!

  • Deborah C.

Decided to try this place one evening, and will not go back. The food was mediocre at best (had a tostada salad), service was not terribly efficient, and the atmosphere was so loud and obnoxious that I purposely ate quickly so that we could leave. It was so loud that when we exited into the parking lot, the silence felt deafening, and I could hear white noise in my ears for awhile. We will not go back to this restaurant when there are better choices in B'ham.

    (2)
  • Brian J.

This place is as good as Mexican food gets. Lots of college students made for a full restaurant, but we didn't have a very long wait at all and with no reservations. The food was good, but the drinks are where this place shines. Cheap, delicious, and big. Each trip I make to Bellingham will include a trip to Jalapenos.

    (5)
  • Sheena H.

This is the best food and service i've been able to find in a mexican restaurant. The food is delicious, the drinks are huge and not expensive, and the service has been absolutely amazing everytime. It's always packed inside which is a good sign. Their fish tacos are so yummy, you get a huge piece of grilled halibut which is so nice to find good fish that's not fried in a taco.

The food and drinks are ok. The problem is that there are probably 20 Mexican restaurants in Bellingham. I haven't been there in years so maybe I will give it a second chance.

The salsa looks, tastes and smells like marinara!!!!!!!! YUCK! The food is greasy, uninventive, and overpriced.

I have lived in San Antonio, Texas, traveled extensively all over Mexico, lived in San Diego, and I can tell you Jalapenos is a great Mexican restaurant!! I was so happy to finally find a Mexican restaurant in the Northwest that captures the fresh, authentic flavor of Mexico and the Southwest! The staff is very warm and inviting, the margaritas are amazing, and the food is consistently delicious and fresh. I love the Bellingham ambience that Jalapenos has as well. I bring my family visiting from Texas to Jalapenos and they too just rave about how good it is!! Definitely the best Mexican food you will find around here!

My fave is the carnitas that they serve on Mon. - Wed. Service is good, food is pretty consistent. A bit overpriced for your basic mexican fare, but that's the norm for Bham restaurants in general.

I like Mexican food, and I eat it a lot. I have tried every Mexican restaurant in Bellingham. Many are good, but this is the best The service is swift and efficient. (It had better be - Jesse, el patron, always affable but efficient - would brook no less.) The steak ranchero and fajitas are excellent, and there is a seafood stew-like thing (senior moment - I can't remember its name) that is tremendous. The house wine is good, ample - and cheap. According to my wife - no experienced booze hound - the margaritas are a bit "strong". On a summer evening you can sit outside and enjoy a water view, when the train isn't coming through. Jalapenos can be a little crowded when WWU is in session, or a warm, dry week-end rolls around, but why sweat a little delay - you can always get your drink before you get our table, and stand around drinking and talking like an urban sophisticate. When full the place tends to be fairly noisy, so don't plan intimate conversations there. Finally, if Jesse isn't too busy, ask him to tell you about his sipping tequila collection.

This really is one of the better Mexican restaurants in town. The follow that owns it has cooked for a number of famous people including a number of presidents. He has the pictures on the back wall near the rest room. The view out the back isn't bad. You can at least see the water. The decor is nothing great, in fact its so bad it sort of adds the the charm.

decent mexican food, definately a college atmosphere, fantastic margaritas, needs to be updated and more lighting, feels very vintage (not the good kind) and a bit rundown

The food was great! However, we ate outside and there were at least 3 spiders crawling on our table. My water had a bug in it, but since we were outside, I assumed it flew in there from outdoors.

Jalapenos is a locally-owned small chain of Mexican restaurants that serves up the standard-but-good fare of tacos, enchiladas, tostadas, etc. The service is prompt and friendly, and the food comes out fast and on those super-hot plates so popular in Mexico (kidding, I'm kidding)! The best time to come, though, is during their happy hour (twice daily and all day Sunday) when you and your friend ('cuz you don't need to be drinking this alone) can enjoy a discounted Big Mama margarita and cheap appy's. I really like their taquitos, and you get a whole huge plate of them for $5! But my favorite is the mango margarita, which sadly is NEVER on special but I'm willing to shell out the extra few bucks to enjoy one nonetheless. The chicken quesadilla is a favorite with the kids, and if you come with a crowd check out their GIGANTIC party-sized nacho platter - seriously I think you could easily feed 15 people with this thing. This location, at the bottom of Holly Street, has a nice outdoor deck to sit on, which is right across the tracks from the water so you can enjoy a little sea breeze if you're lucky. Plenty of free parking in front, too, which is a plus in this part of town!

Service was good but the food was mediocre. I was hoping for a gooey cheese enchilada, but the cheese was hard and not the best quality. The other enchilada featured chicken that was watery and tasteless. We had two virgin lime margaritas that were too salty to finish. Left feeling kind of sick from all the salt.

Breakdown: 1.) over 45 minutes of wait time before and after the meal, waiting for server and check. 2.) never had our water/chips refilled once. 3. )never saw server after food was delivered. 3.1) Consistently neglected us? 4.)food was okay! 4.1) Mojito was Good! 5.)had to initiate payment procedure, required locating and recalling server. Over all they just seemed to rushed and bothered to wait on us. We got there thirty minutes earlier than Happy Hour, it seems like they could have remembered to wrap up current business before focusing wholly on the new arrivals.

I visited jalapeños for their Sunday happy hour! Lots of choices which I was excited about but the portions were small (expected for happy hour) but I really liked the pork quesadilla, but could've done without the chicken and beef tacos! I love Mexican food but these little guys did nothing for me. Also nothing came with guac- talk about disappointing!!! To drink I got the big mama (hehe I liked the name) which was delicious and for happy hour costed 6.95+1.25 for fruit shot. I got mango and was pleased with the slight taste of tequila and yummy mango flavor. It definitely did its job... But I still thought for happy hour that this was a little on the pricey side. The view from the back patio was gorgeous and pretty busy for a Sunday afternoon. Our service wasn't super great- I felt like our waiter had a little bit of an attitude and wasn't interested in being overly friendly but the food came pretty quickly. I don't know if I would come back when there is so many delicious Mexican restaurants around this area!

Jalapenos is Bellingham restaurant royalty when it comes to drinking downtown. The food tastes alright after a margarita or two but that's not why people come here. Cheap big-gulp size margarita's drive a lot of traffic as do the happy hour specials. Good: Big Mama with Chip Dip Trio Bad: Post-Big Mama. Silver level of ingredients is worth the extra $$ imo.

Pleasant atmosphere and authentic Mexican food, this restaurant offers value for your time and dinero. We ordered the tiered (3) Tower Sampler for an appetizer, and it was enough for a meal for two. While it was very tasty, almost everything was fried. We were seated promptly, even thought they were quite busy. It was a scorching hot day, and they refilled our water glasses frequently, which was really great. Service was very friendly, but not necessarily quick. I'd recommend this for a bite to eat when you're in the area and expecting traditional, dependable Mexican. The Margarita list was extensive and offered some creative drinks, and they have a daily happy hour, should you be looking for a watering hole.

Food was good but service is seriously lacking! Also the server charged my card twice and one charge was for double the amount I asked her to put on the card!

The interior and exterior are a little worn but the food was good and plentiful and the staff was very attentive. We stopped here driving through town and would go out of our way to return next time we're in the area.

Pretty decent happy hour BUT the service stinks. Waited a long time before even seeing a waitress. The least they could do is get you a drink right away. You would probably have time for more than just one.

Jalapeños reminds me of a place I might have come to during my pre-21 year old, college days when I was trying to score a fishbowl margarita heavy on the tequila. Free chips and salsa and large food portions are often enough to please any starving student, even if the tomato chunks in the salsa were somewhat rubbery and the chips were from the standard warehouse sized bags. The decor was colorful, but old and tired plastic wrap on each of the diner booths can only do so much to make this bar feel like a family oriented restaurant. The one thing this place had going for it was the view of the islands and water, even if it was slightly skewed by the industrial port. If nature is not your thing, you can watch the latest sports playing on the flat screen televisions throughout the bar/restaurant. Had someone asked me to guess what was served to me, I would have guessed a panini. It was actually a Chimichanga that I had ordered, but it did not quite fit that criteria since it was pan fried instead of deep fried and then thrown on a grill and served with grill lines. I suppose there is a first for everything. $14.95 for my Chimichanga seemed a bit steep especially since the quality and presentation was lacking. It always worries me when my stomach rumbles after having a meal at a restaurant. It usually means something didn't sit well with me. It is a rare occurrence, but when it does happen I usually label the place as a point of no return.

Here's why it only gets two stars ...maybe I'm just having a jaded point of view being from South Texas but tortillas should come with your meal also it is very overpriced usually you can feed two people for the price of one meal here ... I just don't see paying $13-$15 for enchiladas anywhere would be logical... I also just expected the tamales to be a little fresher. It was okay

Meh.........ya get 4 stars cause ya pour a heavy drink. Big Mama had no flavor other than cheap tequila. But, strong I'll give you that. Will have to go back a second time to get a better judge of the place. Service was fast and friendly though our waitress never introduced herself. Food is not scratch made. This is Americanized Mexican - ish food. Mainly deep fried from a bag. But great snacks when your drinking. I take this kinda place as something from my college days to go and kick it. Free chips and salsa (not the best salsa but salsa...). You can order some more jazzed up ones. Got the Atomica Salsa rated at its hottest.....it carries some heat but when I see 5 chilies as your warning I wanna walk away crying. For those who like spicy its there....could be spicier. Price is up there but portion size aint bad. LOTS of stuff to choose from. Kinda dimly lit though. All in all I'd go back. BHam is a smaller town and I can see this spot being fun quick. Other bars around it in walking distance so it would be a fun addition to your beer crawl.

Before you decide to come here, you should know one thing -- people come here for the drinks, not the food. And I come here only for two words: BIG MAMAS. Yes, I will (inevitably) order food when I come here, but only after a big mama or two. And I'll stick with one of the cheaper appetizers, or a couple happy hour tacos if it's that time of day. But don't go here for the food. It's overpriced, super "Americanized Mexican" and has probably been sitting inside a freezer for months (at least that's what it tastes like). Service here is hit or miss; the place is frequently packed like sardines on the weekends. It's a college drinking spot. However, I'll continue to come here for the big mamas forever. Strong and tasty!

Great place if you're in a party or festive mood. Atmosphere was fantastic one night (weekend) and quiet on another visit. Food has been consistently good every time we've been. Free warm tortilla chips and fresh salsa arrive soon after you sit down. The seafood paella was enormous, easily big enough for two. The fajitas were also delicious and big enough to feed a hungry ex-football player.

Meh. I'm probably bitter because they only had tapatio for hot sauce and I decided to give it a go to see if I was still allergic (bad idea!) However, they're awesome for happy hour! Cheap and nummy big mamas, sangria, mini burritos, nachos! Pros? -Happy hour :-) -Massive margaritas -Can't ever complain about chips and dip for free to start at any mexican restaurant Cons? -Extremely overpriced -Americanized to the max mexican food

This is typical American Mexican. A lot of whatever you order. No necessarily good, but a lot. We stopped by on a sunny Spring Sunday afternoon. The margaritas were good. The nachos were not so good. So big, so much, so...not so good. Sometimes simplicity is good. So much sour cream, gaucamole, cheese, meat, etc. I know, sounds like a good combination, but it was too much. The location was great, the conditions were sunny and the views were good. The service was okay; we had a hostess (?) that provided chips and salsa quick. We also had a waiter that provided our margaritas quick. But then we were back to the hostess for the delivery of our food. If you're just hungry and not concerned about quality, only quantity, then come here. You will not be disappointed.

We love this place! The service it always fast & friendly! The food is always amazing! The chipotle enchiladas are to die for. They are a pretty spicy but I love spicy! Now Iam not one to spend 10 dollars on one drink ever. Except at Jalepenos. They have the strongest, most delicious drinks everrrr!!! They usually arnt your typical size glasses either, they're rather HUGE! My personal fav is the AMF. I don't usually like AMF's but they definitely got it right here. The fish bowl is also delish. The downtown location is the best out of them all and has the best out door seating!

My first time visiting this place. Upon entering, I was welcomed by a nicely hostess with a smile. They served salsa & chips which was quite good. Realizing that they were quite busy, I ordered a meal righaway. Waitress was short and inattentive. I understand she was busy. A different server told me they forgot my order upon my asking & waiting for 30 mins. No apology offered. She never came back until my final bill. Food was decent but service was terrible. I wont be visiting this place.

Poor quality. Came here for dinner. Husband ordered a chicken chimichanga. Was just a giant chicken burrito with beans and rice inside. Not fried or crispy and very bland in flavor. I ordered the puppy tacos, was expecting a puffy crispy flour tortilla but received just a stale chewy fried corn tortilla. Again very bland. The beans and rice were very lackluster. Do not recommend this restaurant.

Certainly not perfect, but 5 star worthy overall. We interacted with 3 different employees there, and they were all pleasant. In fact, this was almost a negative because at least one of them would walk by frequently and ask us if we needed anything which can be awkward when our mouths are full and we feel the necessity to say "no thanks." The "free" nachos were possibly the best I've ever had, and the salsa was also very tasty although a little too liquidy for my preference. We went during lunch (11-3) and I ordered the combo meal. It was $8 for 1, $10 for 2 and $11 for 3 so of course with that value I ordered the 3. Holy crap that was a lot of food! The chicken in the burrito was a little dry so I'd suggest avoiding that and going with beef or something else. I particularly liked the rice, but I'm a rice guy ;) My girl got the low carb fajita salad with steak. I didn't like it, but the steak itself was quite good (it tasted subtly like kalbi) and very soft. The interior is nice and includes very high ceilings that include ceiling fans, nice for summer days. One issue was that they had their TVs set on a sports channel which is cool, but the current broadcast was a radio show and of course there was no sound coming from the TVs. You'd think they would notice and change the channel to something we could actually enjoy watching, not just a audioless guy talking.

Great margaritas. Good happy hour. Burritos are good and not loaded with all the beans and rice filler you get some places. I come back often. Good flavor on everything I have tried.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
