Hen Of The Wood

One of the best in the Stowe/ Waterbury area. The menu is always a bit eclectic, new and exciting. Service is exceptional. We've even made specific chef requests when making our reservation. They are always accommodating. Love this place.
Hen of the Wood, is, without a doubt, one of those places you go out of your way to go and visit. I hadn't been in two years and have dreamt of the time when I could come again. We ordered the beets (delightful, little gems as always), radicchio and frisee salad with bleu cheese (amazing) and I had the sweet corn dumplings with chanterelle mushrooms. Not only is the food out of this world, every moment of the dining experience is such a pleasant treat. Our server was amazing. My Manhattan was amazing. My IPA was amazing. I hope I don't have to wait two years until I get the pleasure of dining here again.
One of the best, if not the best dinner I've ever had. Looked this place up on Yelp before a recent ski trip and had very high expectations considering the buzz it had generated. Although I was quite worried I'd leave disappointed (as I too often do from restaurants), I was stunned that it lived up to the reviews 110%. The place is beautiful inside and out, and the service outstanding. For appetizers, we had a squash soup and duck sausage/cornmeal polenta, both which were fantastic. The sausage, crumbly and salty, was my favorite of the two. Also tried a cheese plate with a sheep's milk bleu cheese, which came with fig bread and was killer. Dinner was skate over a light broth with mussels, which was lightly breaded and perfectly seared. The other entree was a smoked hanger steak which I will never forget. The most perfect medium rare I've ever seen, topped with an incredibly fresh chimichurri type mixture. Divine. Dessert was a coffee semifreddo over a chocolate ganache and cookie-ish thing. Again, just stunned by how good it was. Portions are reasonable for the type of place, and I can't wait to have an excuse to head back to Vermont and dine at Hen of the Wood again.

Two words: huevos rancheros Stayed here for a night and it was fantastic. Great bars within walking distance and all the best beers on tap/cans--depending on your preference. There is a shared bathroom at the end of the hall but the bedroom had a sink, so we didn't have to carry our dopp kits back and forth. Great location and great staff, don't miss breakfast in the morning!
My first experience in a bed and breakfast and I really enjoyed it. We had a few minor mishaps but nothing too serious. One person in our party neglected to inform the inn that we would be a party of 3 and not 2 so we ended up having to share a king sized bed. Wasn't the businesses' fault but you really come to appreciate actual hotels with the ability to accommodate you in a different room with a high chance of availability. There was also a mix up with the amount of nights and amount charged for our stay which was corrected the next day by the owner. They were very attentive about it. Now for the rest of the good stuff... What a beautiful location. The building is so well kept. They have a nice patio with tables for you to enjoy their well known breakfast in town. Their eggs Benedict were fantastic with homemade Hollandaise sauce. It was a nice suprise to find out our breakfast was included with our stay when we asked for the bill. Free WiFi was also available. We stayed in the back of the house (can't remember the room number) with a nice kitchen and even a small deck to sit outside with a view to the yard. The room had a nice king sized bed with a love seat. The bathroom was great, I'm not sure how they make it happen but the bathroom was not freezing in the mornings. They have the cutest little dog that roams around the bed & breakfast like he owns the place. Would definitely recommend staying here if you're in Waterbury.
I don't usually write reviews for hotels and inns, but because of the breakfasts that are included here, I had to write a review. We've stayed here twice. The first time the room was spacious and clean, this time, not so much. But, we love the service, the common areas and again, what a breakfast. And the breakfast is included in the price of the room. I had the Huevos Rancheros again, and I can safely say it's one of the best Huevos Rancheros I've ever had. Love it, and we will be back every time we are in Waterbury. Plus, at the in house bar, they serve great local beers including the superb Heady Topper.

The basil, tomato, mozzarella sandwich was great. They used reduced balsamic and red hen bread to differentiate it but it doesn't hold a candle to my standards of this sandwich in NYC and Boston (see other reviews). The burrito had great ingredients but I don't understand the gringo tendency to make a burrito into something you need to eat with a fork and knife. 4/5 The Lost Nation Saison Lamoille and Grassroots Bliss of Absence were great pours. Doing this review mainly to record those beers. ;)
Another fantastic spot in Waterbury. Let's start by noting the Reservoir has a five star beer list that is heavily tilted toward local options. Some beer bars tend to make good food less of a priority, but I thought food at the Reservoir was pretty great as well. All the locals eating at dinner seemed to agree. I opted to sit at the bar so I can't speak to the table service. Bartenders were attentive and knowledgable. Nothing is more annoying than bartenders and servers with no knowledge of what there pouring. Not an issue here. As a side note I was pretty pumped to see that the Shed burger lives! Couldn't help ordering one after seeing an old favorite of mine on the menu. It was juicy and delicious and came with a big pile of tasty fries. I certainly will be back again!
Very impressed.... being somewhat food snobbish. Great value, lots of local ingredients. Our server (Mary F) was very genuine and happy. So refreshing to be treated like that! (She is the main reason for writting this review) To management: she does a great job on up selling too, w/ out being pushy)

How am I the first to review this place? It seems like it has been here for years. Hmph!? Anyway, great location right off I-89. Pretty close to downtown Waterbury and on the way to Stowe. Perfect for us. The room we got is cozy but efficient. The TV is old and outdated, but the bed and bathroom were clearly updated recently. This place has the old homey Inn feeling without being too stuffy. The price is pretty reasonable too. My only complaints are 2 things. 1. No ironing board or iron in the rooms. I know this may sound crazy, but my clothes don't always travel well and I like to try and fix them if I can. 2. The outdoor deck off of our room. Its great to have a cute little deck to enjoy, but with no real windows in the room besides the sliders that go to the deck... making the deck a little more private would be awesome. I would have loved to have kept the slider open for a while, but since the deck is shared among everyone on the floor with no dividers between us, we couldn't. The only other window was in the bathroom and it had an AC unit in it. So we had to sleep with everything shut. Not a huge big deal, but worth mentioning. The simple breakfast in the am was a nice touch and everyone that works here is super friendly. I think we would come back again if we were in the area.

great bagels and great cream cheese. If you are looking for a variety of cream cheese flavors this is the place to go. Prices are a little high but the food was good and the service was friendly. Be aware that this place only takes cash or checks sadly. They also sell their cream cheese in containers which is a great idea.
Awesome bagels! Breakfast sandwiches are really good as are the lunch bagel sandwiches, which are available anytime.
I was really looking forward to this place. Even woke up early so I could get it before work. I got a bacon egg and cheese bagel and one with have cream cheese and half butter and a coffee. Came to almost $10. The eggs and bacon were microwaved which if I had known I wouldn't have even ordered it. My half and half bagel was all mixed together so the whole top side was cream cheese and the bottom butter not the one side butter and other side cream cheese. I even explained how I wanted it to the lady. Apparently she doesn't listen to what customers want. They didn't wrap it in foil so when I got home they were stone cold. I even asked for some before I left because I wanted them to stay hot and they said they don't have any. And to top it all off not a single worker there was wearing gloves. I most certainly will not return.

If you love ice cream and are in the area, then you must check this place out! Informative and fun tour that gives you a brief lesson on the founding of Ben and Jerry's as people, friends, community implication and their success in frozen treats. They weren't making ice cream on the friday we visited and one of the videos wasn't working so the overall experience could have been better. Was also a little disappointed to learn that this location is only the flagship factory, not the biggest in terms of production. Still worth it for 4 $, getting ice cream samples at the end was what everyone was anticipating and there were enough left for seconds and thirds if you weren't shy. Make sure to check out the gift shop and look at the memorabilia collected around the walls, I loved seing the original old recipe books and vintage ice cream scoop display. Btw, the flavor graveyard isn't directly next to the factory, the little hike up the hill can be quite muddy during spring/rainy seasons so watch your toes.
This was a waste of time. The tour was looking into a room where you really can't see anything besides closed in machines. There was no watching ice cream mix or anything like that. The free sample is nice and I thought pretty good sized...about 1/3 cup of the flavor of the day. The gift shop was over priced and the lines to buy anything was long as was the line to buy an ice cream. The whole visit lasted about 90 minutes and most of that was waiting for our tour. Good for a once in a lifetime trip. We won't be back.
Went here spring of 2015 and was surprised at how small this place was. The "tour" was basically a movie and then a short walk to a small room with windows overlooking 2 areas. I didn't really find it that interesting. It was a skimpy tour. Maybe 15 min. You get a small sample at the end, then if you want to buy a real ice you can go spend like 5/6 bucks on a small cone. I bought one small cone for daughter and one small in a cup for me and it was like $11. Other than that there is a van on premises (wow) a small, old wooden playground, and the flavor graveyard, which was cute, but I drove like 3 1/2 hours to go here. thank goodness it was not the only thing we did on our vacation as we stayed several days up in Vt, because i would have been very disappointed to have driven all that way for that. IMO if you go and are driving far, have other things planned!

It's not cool trying to get food twice in two weeks and not getting seated due to lack of attention by the restaurant's staff. Two weeks ago, we tried to grab breakfast around 11:30 on a Saturday. The restaurant had a few tables seated, but no staff was in the dining room or behind the bar. There was a bunch of laughing from behind the kitchen door. We waited for ten minutes and were starting to leave when a cook popped his head out to say someone would be out in a few minutes. We didn't wait. Today, I waited for ten minutes while three waitstaff and a busboy passed by the entry at least six times. The restaurant was busy, but it wasn't slammed. Each time someone passed, they looked and saw I was there, but they didn't acknowledge me otherwise. I wasn't looking for a repeat, so I left again. If you can get seated, get the potato verde. The food isn't so good that it's worth the wait, though, and the service once you're in is hit or miss. Avoid the teenage and twenty-something waitresses if you can; they're usually the ones at this restaurant who could care less whether you're there.
This seems to be a very local restaurant with good food and friendly staff. According to my mother, their meatloaf is delicious. I highly recommend the macaroni and cheese!
Great casual Vermont restaurant. Not for fancy folks seeking haute cuisine or so-called "foodies." Down home, friendly and relaxed! I liked my pork and apples special! Too stuffed to try the maple cheesecake!!!

I'm a little baffled by the negative reviews of this place. Your experience depends on what you expect. If you're looking for fine dining and on-site spa services, you will be disappointed. If you enjoy the woods and are looking for something more rustic, this is your place. The cabins are the way to go--I didn't stay in the inn due to being accompanied by two large dogs, but it was nice that they accommodated them, and I like how private the cabins were. I don't think I would have liked the inn as much. The breakfasts were quite good, and the couple that runs the place are lovely people. Yes, the accommodations could use some updating, but if you're spending enough time indoors to care, you're doing Vermont wrong. As for the "weak" wifi, see the previous sentence. I'd stay again, and I think it's a great option for those traveling with pets.
I'm surprised by all these positive reviews; I wonder if any of them were written by employees or owners. My mom stayed at the Grunberg recently and the service was highly disappointing. She is 70 years old and booked one of the cabins. When she asked for help wheeling her bag up the hill to the cabin, the proprietor refused and told her she'd have to do it herself. At breakfast, when she requested strong coffee, the other proprietor told her she'd have to "have it the way I make it." Bear in mind that she was paying $200 a night for a tiny room that my wife described as a girl-scout cabin! Not recommended.
When my GF and I parked in front of this little B&B, I was charmed by the old fashion Swiss chalet aspect of the place. But sadly, the magic quickly disappeared when we entered our room. Bed and pillows were stiff and uncomfortable. We had to share the bathroom with another couple. Strangely, our room door didn't have a key-lock (like youth hostel) so it was not possible to lock our room when we left to go downtown. Wi-Fi was not working well. The walls and floors were so thin, that I was awake in the middle of the night when my room neighbor went to the bathroom. We even heard the lovemaking of a twenty-something couple during the evening when we were sitting in front of the fireplace downstairs. I don't mind staying in rustic hotel or B&B, but the price has to be in accordance with the service offered. Sadly, a night at the Grunberg Haus was about the same price of any other hotels around Waterbury. I gave 1 star for the old fashioned Swiss chalet ambiance and 1 star for the owner welcome and service. This B&B really need a major freshen up. It has the potential to be much better. If you like rustic and old fashioned B&B, the Grunberg Haus could be your place, if not, I don't recommend.

My boyfriend and I were in the Waterbury area for a quiet weekend away. After a long morning of tasting cheese at Cabot, chocolate at lake Champlain choc, & a Ben and Jerry's tour we needed something to fill our bellies. We decided to stop by Zachary's for a slice of pizza ( we're from jersey). No slices available so we ordered a plain personal pie and a chicken bacon ranch grinder. The pizza was good, but very greasy. The grinder was delicious, but the after effects were smelly. We decided to go back to our hotel and relax before venturing out to Stowe. We never made it out of our hotel. Our stomachs were killing us and I'm surprised ppl didn't pass out as they passed our hotel room door. Man were we gassy! In short the food was good, but the smelly after effects were killer
Ordered the Five Meat pizza & spicy wings. Pizza was super-oily/greasy, but very tasty. Wings were superb too. Overall, yummy fare. Kids enjoyed it. The only downside was that I had especially called Zachary's again to request for some disposable plates & napkins to be sent along with the order, but none were sent. Anyways, I would be willing to try other things on the menu, if we are ever in town again. Highly recommend the wings though.
It's a nice little pizza place, my fiancé and I stopped in and had a couple of personal pizzas. The food wasn't bad and the atmosphere was quiet. The waitress was personable and friendly. Will I go back, maybe if I'm in the area. Was it memorable, not really different from many pizza places I've been to before but certainly not bad at all.

I ate here a couple nights ago after doing some snowshoeing at Bolton Valley. I thought the prices were reasonable and the quality of food was fair - about what you would expect for budget Chinese food. I enjoyed the pork fried rice - it was tasty and better than average. The Chow Fun was fine, but nothing special. I was really hoping for more quantity of food, though - we ate in, and the meals were served on smallish plates. I easily finished a full order of Chow Fun along with a small fried rice side order. I shouldn't go hungry spending $10 in a place like this. C'mon - load up my plate and fill up my belly!
Just rolled with shrimp lo mein and an egg roll. Both were wicked greasy, and the lo mein tasted like it sat in the pan a bit too long. The price was cheap, but so was the quality. The folks inside were nice, though, and the place is clean.
I used to grub down here with Joel for lunch once a week. Lunch specials from $3.65 to 5.25 and not a penny more! The food...it's a cheap chinese restaurant, what you would expect. On a budget - load of food for a small small price. The "Would I go again?" report: Only if I lived in Waterbury and was broke and/or needed some variety for lunch.
