Tried this place out and had a great breakfast. I got a special off the board. Coconut Almond French Toast and it was fantastic! My SO got 2 eggs and French Toast and was very happy too. The service was good too. The rest room could use some TLC & repairs though.

This is what Sunday breakfast is about, this is what a diner is. As a former local a trip home is incomplete without a stop at the Dam Diner. Service can be slow. Often that is due to the fact that the place is full and the staff is few. If you are in the area you have to understand that not everything is about rushing, life can appear a little slower if you are from "the big city". Relax - eating at the dam diner is about enjoying your food, catching up with friends at the nearby table and knowing that your meal was made, not defrosted. Pull up a chair, enjoy your mountain of pancakes and remember what brought you to small town Vermont in the first place.

I am updating my review...after eating here several more times I actually found some great things on the menu. They have great eggs and breakfast sammys...and their home fries are good too. Stay away from their pancakes and french toast BUT do try their oatmeal. The lunchtime burgers are awesome but a little on the small side...also their meatloaf was some of the BEST I have ever had... The staff can be a little off at times...sort of like going to McSorleys Ale House in nyc...still worth the visit and NOTHING else around. If they only served beer...

I last visited the Dam Diner in May, 2012 and now again on November 21, 2012 while visiting family in Vermont for Thanksgiving. It is even better than ever to now earn a five star rating from me. We went around 6:15pm and easily found a table for two with Julie as our server; she was just great even though she had many tables to attend. The place was full when we left as they close at 8pm. I had the stuffed turkey with sides of fresh whole baby beets and the best fried sweet potatoes. Since my sister only had the Shepards Pie we shared an order of beer battered onion rings which were exceptional. She could only consume half of the huge order of Shepards Pie, so took the rest home. Being full, I took home a piece of my favorite carrot cake for later that night. We met a nice couple from Newfane, VT at the next table who told us about the Sumner House historic restaurant in Charlestown, NH which they also like, so maybe on my next trip to VT, we shall try it, but I still must go to the Dam Diner. I can just not report enough great things on the menu at the Dam Diner and I really need to try more of them instead of usually ordering the stuffed turkey. I wish there were a web site to view their extensive menu. Also, remember at the Dam Diner it is CASH only!

Talk about a small town New England diner..............you'll get a stare walking in unless you're a local but the food is worth the initial awkward silance that comes with that "record stop" moment. Waitress has a dry sense of humor but warms up to you so long as you leave the big city attitude outside in the car. She has no problem telling you off but can get very friendly by meal's end. I can only comment on breakfast but for the money is the best breakfast I've had......maybe it just tastes that much better after a night of drinking and before a day of skiing. Banana bread french toast - homemade and I still think about it when I'm not up in VT. I've has the sampler which is good but I'm hooked on the Banana bread. Dam Sandwich(Actually Double Dam) - typical ham/bacon/sausage egg and cheese with home frieds. A healthy portion. It's a local local diner, everything is good and fresh. If in the area skiing at Stratton or Mt Snow. Take he trip early before the lifts start, you won't regret it. ***Handicap accessible***

I haven't been to this place in like 4-5 years...but that's because I live in NY and could never find the address! We have a family friend who has a house nearby and he and his wife always told us how great it was. They come here all the time and for many many years. I haven't been in VT for a while because of school so I just randomly thought of it and I actually found it online! NOW I KNOW WHERE TO GO WHEN I COME BACK UP!! This place was a hidden secret for so long and this place is full of locals, it kind of stinks that it's online now because well now I'll have to wait even longer to sit down! This place is so great it almost always has lines. I have never ate something here I did not like! Beer battered onion rings, mac and cheese, bison burger. NOM! WONDERFUL. I know good food- I live on Long Island and am in NYC all the time so I think my palate is pretty good. Woohoo!

The owner of this place is a horrible person. After I heard about how the owner treated and humiliated a fellow disabled vet with a service dog I would never dine here and I strongly urge anyone else who is a vet or supports vets not to dine at this establishment and boycott this diner!

Okay, first off, the name--it's called "The Dam Diner" because its next to the Townshend Dam. Get it? The one other reviewer commented that the Dam Diner is a "locals only" place, but that the food was decent and affordable. So far as diners go, doesn't that explain most all of them? So I'm a bit perplexed that he/she only gave this diner 3 stars. As far as the "locals only" comment, that's pretty much true. But that only tells half the tale. The locals in these parts are absolutely fascinating, very quirky but also very sincere. Some of the folks you'll see here will make you forget all about the food--and I mean that in the best possible way, I look forward to the day I'm considered a "local" myself. I think the food here is great, so far as diners go. I've eaten here at least a dozen times, and can't think of a "bad" meal that I've had. Breakfast here is a no-brainer, everything is good. So is dessert. Price is extremely reasonable. And the service is always fast--though often quirky. Just the way it is in these parts.

Only diner for miles, but found it to be a pretty good. Had the Thanksgiving sandwich, AWESOME. The place is very small and the decor is nothing really to look at. No alcohol served. They have some homemade baked goods such as cookies and dounuts, had a few of each, not bad at all. Serve is a little slow and for such a small place the waitress did not make her way past our table to refill drinks unless we flagged her down.

Stopped by for a late lunch. It is definitely a locals only place. But decent affordable food.

The diner is located between West Townshend and East Jamaica on Rte. 30, and you'll probably find the parking lot out front looking pretty busy. Inside it might be even busier because there's limited staff. So, adjust. Calm down. It will probably take a while to get your order taken and your food served. It's worth it. The food is darned good; the honey dipped chicken would do a four-star restaurant proud, and the turkey reuben was expertly made (with hand-cut fries, too). We weren't locals or regulars, and a lot of folks there appeared to be, but we never felt like "outsiders." Maybe because we weren't pushy, rushed or anything but happy to be where we were. It's diner food, yep, but it's good diner food, whether you're sitting at one of the tables of the horseshoe-shaped counter.

YUMMY!!!!! You can not say enough good things about the food at the Dam Diner! We discovered this great place many years ago and keep coming back. The food is wonderful, especially the pancakes! Sweet potato and the berry pancakes were delish! Real maple syrup of course. The décor is cute, very diner'ish and the staff is super friendly. Its not huge so seating is limited and its usually full on a weekend but definitely worth the wait!!! Highly recommend!

A nice diner in the middle of nowhere. Obviously a community hub of sorts and a nice one at that. Good food, good service, home made bread and donuts. Nom nom nom.

We had breakfast here, it was as expected for a diner, the bacon was great and the French toast was tasty. They had a really nice looking dessert menu and pies, but we didn't try anything since it was early in the morning. I would defintley return to try the lunch menu.

This place was in the middle of nowhere. We jumped for joy after traveling for over two hours without seeing any places to eat. The diner is old and in despirate nees of an upgrade, but the service and food was stellar. Check it out if your in the area. You will not be dissapointed with the food.

I am not just a fan of diners, I'm a patron too! And this is a great one. **CASH Breakfast ALL day. The usuals are on the menu of course but real maple syrup is the standard ( not corn syrup) served w their delish French toast/mound of pancakes. The real deal like fresh seasonal veggies, locally raised Bison for their burgers, in house roasted turkey, homemade meatloaf & real mashed potatoes. Service can be slow but if you bring yourself into harmony w VT time & sit at any of the 1930s enamel-top tables or in the big swivel-chairs at the U-shaped counter & chill then it won't matter at all when your up to your lips (& nose) in hot, yummy, homemade goodness.

This place is a gem! Lunch for 2 for under $13 - and the food was GOOD!! Looked like hand cut french fries with a cheeseburger club, and my veggie burger was delish! Great waitress, attentive and funny!

I love this place. When I was a child my grandmother lived in VT and it was my favorite restaurant back then. I always got the chicken fried steak and often finished with a slice of strawberry rhubarb pie! everything was delicious and it was always fun to eat there. Recently, I went back with some friends on a spur of the moment day trip and it was just as delectable as I remembered. The ambiance is also the same- warm, welcoming, homey. The staff was friendly and had great personalities. unfortunately they were sold out of the rhubarb pie but I took it to mean that it is still as delicious. One of my friends had the buffalo chicken sandwich and said its the best he's ever eaten, and another friend had a patty melt and ate every bite- which is out of character for her. It's a really cute little country diner with very reasonable prices. I would recommend the Dam Diner to anyone visiting the brattleboro area at all! so worth the drive.

We stopped here on our drive down Memory Lane...my grandparents used to come here constantly. We were a party of 5 for lunch. I can't speak for everyone else's lunch, but mine was awesome. I had their Thanksgiving sandwich special, which was exactly as is sounds: house toasted turkey, stuffing, sharp cheddar, and cranberry sauce on grilled white bread. Oh, and hand cut fries. I'm a sucker for those! Their list of homemade pies was extensive. I had strawberry rhubarb. Only $1.59 a slice! I'll definitely be back!

After a few days in VT we were headed back to New York, in search of a hearty breakfast and a place that could accommodate our group and wouldn't require us to go too far off path. A sliver of cell phone service came through and I found Dam Diner on my Yelp app, just in the nick of time. Honestly, it was perfect. Plenty of space, a friendly staff and amazing diner food. The menu was traditional but extensive; Dam had all the favorites, plus a specials board on the wall with another 12-15 items, and a dessert menu with pies, shakes and anything you could really want. And it was all so affordable! I settled on the sausage, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich on a homemade biscuit, with home fries that were freshly cut, and a mixed fruit pie to top it off. I only hope other Yelp users can be as lucky as I was with this find.
