Thought we'd try this place out after a coworker mentioned it on Facebook. We made reservations for 7:30 on a Saturday evening during the peak foliage season---the place was PACKED. We were seated promptly, right on time. The menu has a variety of choices with all entrees (except the specials) costing $13. My husband and I both ordered French Onion Soup($6), Filet Mignon (yes, for $13) and a side salad ($2.95 when ordering an entree). The salads came out quickly, as did the entree, but the soup got lost in the shuffle. We ended up asking to have it taken off the order, as we didn't want the filet to get cold. We rounded out the meal by splitting a piece of pumpkin cheesecake and it was delicious! For the price, the food was very good. Don't expect a filet you get elsewhere for $20+, but good, just the same. The setting is delightful. So why not 5 stars? It comes down to service. We never got water and the soup was forgotten. Yes, they were busy, but it wasn't the first night they've ever been busy, I'm sure! The staff were efficient, but not personable. Very focused on getting food ordered and delivered, but not on making guests feel welcome. We felt rushed, and, in fact, we were out the door a mere 65 minutes after we were seated. Not exactly a relaxed, romantic meal. We will try again, hopefully on a night when they aren't too busy, so we can slow down and enjoy it more.

What a bargain for such tasty food. Great atmosphere. Try sitting in the lower level tavern with all the regulars as well as an enormous stone fireplace. The wood fire warmed up the whole room. Service was perfect and so was the food. Nice selections of wine. Appetizers: Dumplings and Calamari were delicious. Calamari was so fresh and tender. Perfectly cooked VT steak & tasty grilled shrimp Caesar Salad. This place is worth the trip from anywhere in VT for a cozy supper. Open at 5PM Wed - Sun.

Atmosphere was great, try to get in the loft. Kids loved it. Food and service was good. Portion size seemed small but left full. Like said before, $13 for an entree not bad.

My family went there for Mother's Day, and had a fantastic meal. The ambience is rustic and charming. The salmon was great , however the vegetables are good, but sparse. I like more veggies with the meal. The desert selection is not so great.

The bill was $20 total for a filet mignon and a glass of red wine. They really do have $13 steaks, even at dinner, and they're good! Love the view too, try to reserve a seat by the window if you can.

My wife and I have been coming here for years. We consider the Barn a great place for dinner. Nice atmosphere, good food at a good value. Beautiful drive up the Mettowee Valley from Dorset or Manchester. Upstairs is the dining room, loft-like space. Roaring fire in field stone fireplace in winter, awesome views of mountains in Summer and Fall. Staff is very pleasant and aim to please. There's a bar downstairs, perfect spot for after dinner drink and like upstairs, nice atmosphere. Good bartender. Usually meet nice people at the bar.

We happened to be driving by on last Sunday and felt "invited" by the beautiful exterior and the "all entrees $13 sign." Entering the cosy foyer, we were greeted by smiling faces and a wonderful warming fire. We we seated quickly and loved the interior. It was absolutely beautiful. I honestly cannot gush enough about it. It was five star beautiful. Unfortunately, the food just doesn't live up to the setting and service. The food was unexciting, almost bland. But then again what do you expect for a $13 steak? Honestly it reminded me more of a breakfast steak than a NY Strip. I don't think I have ever said this before, but I wish they would raise the prices so they could improve the food.

Good decent food. It's not a fancy place but it's fine for a simple night out. I like the bar and their Belty burger is yummy. It's a busy place on the weekend nights but we always go on off hours. We have been a few times and have never walked away hating anything. It isn't a 5 star dining experience but if you want to go out for a bite its pretty good.

I have dinned here many times, as my daughter attended Castleton, VT. Probably one of my favorite restaurants, unfortunately it is off the beaten path. Service is consistently pleasant, food always comes out prepared with skill and the priced appropriately. Only wish it was closer to home

My second time there, the food is consistently good. The atmosphere is great. My only issue was the server. He wasn't very attentive. We had to ask for refills of our drinks and about dessert. We really wanted to be there, he didn't seem like he wanted us there. Not a deal breaker though. We will go back.

Last 3 times I went here I swore I would never go back. Service was horrible (waited 1.5 hrs after ordering for our burgers to arrive) and the food was cold when it finally did arrive and sat with empty beer glasses during that 1.5 hour wait. Do the owners think that the food doesn't need to be hot or the service can be lame because the entrees are only $14?

My boyfriend and I went there on a Saturday night. Quick friendly service and the food was outstanding. Probably the best meal I've had in a while. I had the filet and it was perfectly cooked to temp. Veggies were fresh and crisp. Just a all around great meal .Wish I lived closer

The Barn has spoiled me for other restaurants. I don't know if I'll ever be as satisfied by a meal again. There are just too many things to mention here. First, the location is gorgeous. Honestly, it's worth a trip to Rutland County, Vermont just to visit The Barn. The restaurant, as you can imagine, is housed in an old barn. "Charming" seems cliche to describe the interior, but I can't think of another word. The windows look out on expansive views of sprawling green Vermont mountains. Service is great. The food is probably what Gordon Ramsey would probably call "honest": fine dining whose simplicity highlights the flavor of fresh ingredients. The rolls were fresh and warm. I had the soup du jour--a very generous serving of an exquisite peach soup. I also tried the entree "upgrade" of a fields green salad added to the entree for a nominal charge. The house maple dijon vinaigrette is so good I'd buy a bottle of it. For dinner, I had the scallops, which were cooked perfectly and made me wonder if perhaps Vermont is closer to the coast than I thought. Most of the table had the filet, the Barn's signature dish. If I were to go back, I would also have it. It was definitely memorable. On a future visit, I would also have to order two desserts. We split the flourless chocolate cake and a peanut butter pie. I can't decide which I liked better. The flourless chocolate cake was possibly the best I've had, which is saying something, because I've had a lot of flourless chocolate cake in my day. And the peanut butter pie was definitely the best I've had. Oh, and, by the way, every entree is $13. That's right. THIRTEEN DOLLARS. I have no idea how they do it. I have to find some reason to go back up to Pawlet.

I miss the days of their fabulous Salad Bar...but I guess that is why they can keep the prices low. NOT everything on the menu is $13.00 - the specials certainly cost more. The upstairs was completely full when we called for Sunday night reservations, but we were lucky enough to get one of the last tables in the (Noisier) Tavern. They now have a wonderful outdoor deck as well. Salads to start were good, and the Dijon-honey vinaigrette especially good. My bleu cheese dressing had no chunks of cheese - whatsoever. We had the filet mignon - because where else can you get a $13.00 filet? But I was a bit disappointed that my piece was actually 2 small pieces held together by grizzle and sinew. My husband's cut of filet was divine. His was also rare, though he ordered it medium (criminal). However, he ate it, and liked it! The veggies were a bit overcooked and I took issue with the fact that he got plenty of green beans and zucchini with maybe one slice of summer squash, while I got a mere 2 green beans and only summer squash on my plate. I think that consistency is important. My baked potato was delicious and came with sour cream without asking- but gee, it was tiny! My guy loved loved loved his H.M. mashed 'taters. The pecan pie was divine- a very small portion and nuked too long...but so tasty - full of bourbon flavor. The carrot cake was yummy as well. They make their own desserts- and that is a big deal to us! Service was slow, and they did not have enough servers on the floor, but we certainly enjoyed munching on the delicious rolls and sipping wine while we waited. I do not mind a long wait knowing that the food is cooked to order and will be good. What I don't like is waiting endlessly for the check. Yet, The Barn is a fun place to dine and is filled with locals and tourist alike. Everyone is Happy, Happy!

The best part about Barn is the decor. This place is absolutely beautiful, a perfect Vermont hideaway. This place could definitely be top tier, but they have some more work to do. Unfortunately the night we went was insanely crowded, and the kitchen was running very slowly and our server seemed distracted/overwhelmed. I've definitely been in that situation as a server so I tried not hold it against them, and the owner handled it very well, addressing each table and apologizing. Good prices, good food, great ambiance. Just need to polish the staff.. not just in services (filling water glasses and such) but in appearance as well. I'm personally not a fan of a place that nice allowing servers to wear shorts and sneakers, long pants are just nicer, I know that's a weird quirk, but it detracts from the beautiful nature of the place that makes you feel like you're having a fine dining experience. Giving it four stars (though I wish I could give 3.5) because I hope they'll improve the service, timing, and keep up the yummy food at great prices (goat cheese appetizer and mashed potatoes were to die for, salmon was cooked perfectly although not that flavorful, and I wish my dish had had more veggies on the side.) Hope to go again next time I'm in town.

Can't say enough good things about this place all entrees $13 every day. Main dining room has great rustic ambiance. Desserts delicious. Service very good. Mashed potatoes to die for. Filet had great charcoal grilled flavor, although smaller portion than chicken with basil cream sauce (which was wonderful). Carrot cake and pecan bourbon pie outstanding. Only disappointment was raspberry cream cake - dry and frosting crisco like. Outdoor seating looked great but it was too cool that night for us. Tavern seating not as nice as main dining room. Don't use gps to find this place if coming from ny or you will find yourself on non-serviced roads that go to a dead end!

When our dinner plans fell through last minute, the concierge at the Equinox resort recommended that we try out the Barn in Pawlet. I'm glad our dinner plans fell through as this is a great restaurant. There's plenty of parking and it's a little hard to get to (because they don't have an address per se and I was hoping to just put it into my GPS and be on my merry way), but trust me this place is worth all the trouble. You can't miss it as it is literally a huge barn on Route 33. It's got a very cozy feel to it even though it's huge with two separate dining rooms. The host was quick to seat us (even though we didn't have a reservation) and our smiling server appeared quickly rattling off their specials of the day. I had the french onion soup which was divine (the same cant be said about my breath afterwards however). The rolls they served was a perfect accompaniment. I had the roasted duck as an entree and my friend had the filet mignon with mushroom sauce. Both our entrees were fabulous, I loved the duck which was marinated in a really nice sauce (I have no clue what it was). The filet mignon was perfectly cooked and the sauce was great. Oh and as a side dish get their vegetables with maple-dijon vinaigrette (the vinaigrette is amazing!). The best part of this entire meal was the price.I was pretty surprised when I saw the check. Entrees were only $12! I don't really understand how this restaurant makes a profit or even breaks even but as a customer, I think it's great that prices are so low. Definitely go here if you are near the Pawlet area. I can't wait till I go back to Manchester to go here and all the other wonderful places I discovered on our weekend getaway from Boston.

We showed up Fri night at 7pm and the place was packed! Much to our surprise the owner of the restaurant showed us to a table with no waiting. The interior of The Barn is rustic, cozy, warm and inviting. The food was amazing as well. The chicken mettowee was a classic, with cheddar and bacon. The mashed potatoes were especially creamy and went well as a side. Several craft beers available as well. The Anita Abbey Ale packed quite a kick, but had a great caramel aftertaste. Service was great! The owner was making rounds to all of the guests to ensure everything was perfect. The waitress was also very friendly and knowledgeable. Overall, a great restaurant. It was a quick drive from the Manchester vt area, and was a great way to escape the traffic.

"Great for out here," this place features $12 entrees (including the filet mignon) in a romantic, cozy atmosphere. Downstairs, a local band shares its favorite tunes. One very important drawback: although one of my dining companions specified "no sesame seeds" due to an allergy, an appetizer contained sesame seeds. The staff needs to be more attune to food safety issues. I'm keeping it 4-stars because I doubt there's anything else around in this area, but this is a pretty serious issue.

I have eaten in both the bar section and restaurant section. I am a fan of both sections, but I prefer the bar because the bartenders are wonderful and friendly. All entrees on the menu are $14. If you want a salad, that costs extra. There is more meat on the menu than any other options, at least the last time I was there. However, there was a pasta dish that could be made vegetarian and several fish dishes.
