This place was terrible. I grew up eating here and always thought it was great. But after eating there for breakfast today I will never go back. Health board or Gordon Ramsey should be called in to whip them into shape. They were not flexible with substituting meat out for sliced tomatoes or fruit but still charged me for the meat and charged me for the substitute side. It took at least 30 minutes to get our food after ordering. The orange juice was tang mix drink, French toast tasted like dirty grill of onions, garlic, and hamburger, the tomatoes were weird and gross, and the side of fruit was even more horrid. It was old squishy cut up honeydew melon that was so sour it could be battery acid. Gross, gross, gross. Shut your doors! Or learn how to not give people sickening meals. Fresh!! It's Vermont for Christ sake. There are farms everywhere. Even the eggs smelled of old rancid egg farts.

You will love this place if you like atmosphere, large portions of mediocre inexpensive food and occasionally cranky service. I adore this place. When they forget that you wanted blueberry pancakes they might just pour heated blueberries on top of your pancakes to remedy the problem. You won't really care though. You came here for the large portions of Atmo. It's so calming. One night I even ate their stellar coleslaw and surprisingly good mozzarella sticks in the dark after some short in the kitchen blew all the lights out. The hand-dryer in the bathroom always feels (and sounds) like it could blow you out the door. Every time I eat here it's eventful and really fun. I've heard from people who have lived here for years that the Wayside isn't the wonderful old timey, friendly, large portioned experience it used to be. But for me it's like happening onto the set of some failed TV sitcom and it's always exactly what I need. And ridiculously cheap too! Where else can you still get a BLT for less than $3!?! *Avoid the French Toast* It's not so much French as it is just really awful yellow tinged toast. No amount of syrup can solve this problem.

I've been here twice now, on two separate trips to Vermont, and I have to say I love it with all my heart. Not only does it supply every great dinner food you might be craving, it also has ones you didn't know you were missing. Last night I ordered the salt port with milk gravy. NOT diet food. Basically it was like chicken fried bacon with a big gooey yummy cup of gravy to dip it in. I ordered the side of broccoli and cheese for something green...but the cheese far outweighed the vegetable in this situation. Where else can you get a cup full of cheddar Goldfish crackers as a side dish? Or get a maple platter with two types of maple cooked meats plus a maple side? Plus, this is where the local basketball team - the Vermont Frost Heaves - can be found eating dinner every Wednesday night. If that isn't small town charm, I don't know what is. Do not miss this place if you are in the area!

My wife and I stop here when ever we visit VT. The food is consistent and the prices are very reasonable. It has a nice casual feel, great for chatting over some good food. The food is what you would expect in a diner. All of our experiences here have been good and we're looking forward to returning again!

A real diner. It is nothing more and nothing less than what it should be.

Very inexpensive, classic American food. Delicious breakfasts, especially the pancakes, and classics like open faced turkey sandwiches for lunch and dinner. Don't forget to have some pie. Worth a drive if you're not close, and if you're close, why aren't you already there?

Really great breakfast diner; great local history, and amazing value for your dollar. Even when I go at lunchtime, i get breakfast, in fact i don't think i have EVER tried anything BUT breakfast there... they do it so well, i havent bothered to deviate from the bfast dishes!

If the service had been a little better and the food more consistent across the board I would have gone with 5 stars. My burger with mushrooms and swiss cheese was amazing. A little more well than the medium I ordered but otherwise terrific and flavorful. The split pea and ham soup was mediocre at best. The onion rings we all shared were very tasty and crisp, not greasy at all. And the pecan pie was delicious, although not the best I've had by far. My daughter loved her fried clams and applesauce but thought the mashed potatoes were bland. I personally thought the clams were blah (she chose strips), and my husband's french fries were inedible...droopy and greasy with no flavor. His maple cream pie was ok - he liked it - me not so much. I'm not a huge fan of custard pies though, so for what it was I guess it was good. My daughter's chocolate cake was fabulously moist and huge - she took half of it home. We also got a fig and a date bar to take home and really liked both of those. The menu is expansive, the prices are very reasonable, but the quality was definitely spotty depending on the dish. I would give it another try though...maybe for breakfast. Seems like the kind of place that would make a good diner breakfast.

I'm a native Vermonter, and I have eaten here a few times, usually with my grandparents. Most recently I was driving by with my Boyfriend, we were hungry, so we stopped for dinner. I had fried scallops with a side salad and onion rings as well as a fish and clam chowder. My boyfriend had the Hand-cut ham with a pineapple-Mango topping, rice pilaf and french fries and the same fish chowder. The fish chowder was good, thick and filling. The side salad was also really good with fresh greens and a nice portion. The onion rings were excellent, highly recommended. Obviously hand battered and fresh. The scallops were a disaster- obviously NOT hand battered or fresh. They were like chewing leather they were so tough and completely flavorless. My boyfriend was disappointed because his hand cut ham steak ended up being a pre-formed ham patty with no hand cutting in sight, and he hates "fake" meat. As it was the dinner special he expected that they would have actually coked a ham an cut the meat off fresh when an order came in- that was the description. The rice he didn't eat because it was salty and flavorless, and the fries seemed to be ok. We also split the maple cream pie, which was good. All in all, we liked our sides for the most part, but the main part of our dinners was a disappointment. I don't think we would go back, even though the onion rings were really crave worthy.

Been here twice and the food is ALWAYS greasy, no matter what is ordered. I don't understand the rage for this food considering a lot of people around here are health freaks. It's inexpensive but you get what you pay for. Not worth it in my book.

Yum! Wayside was recommended by someone I was meeting for work in Montpelier. The prices were extremely reasonable, and many things were cheap in price but high in value and quality. I ordered a couple margaritas (which were $3.50 each) that were good. I also had the lobster melts with sides of handcut fries and applesauce. The food was excellent and the portions were so large I couldn't finish it. My coworker also thoroughly enjoyed her dinner! The service was also great. Give this place a try!

This place was a godsend for me during my years at Goddard College. I loved the food, and the people (The Galfetti family) /owners were so kind..... I'll be up in that neck of the woods in about a month-and am definitely going back... Long may good, unpretentious dining wave!

Not many places are better than Wayside! It's a must for breakfast. Great people, great food and great prices. Great options, but I get the same thing every time because it's too good to change

    (5)
  • Gel B.

No frills diner. Lots of eating options, friendly staff, comfortable seating. They could ease up on the butter for items like grilled cheeses and other bread dishes (they were kind of soggy) but prices are right and service is quick. Great dessert options.

  • Pamela G.

A typical American diner with great food and excellent service. The portion of the chef's salad is crazy large. Blue cheese dressing tastes like homemade, it was great. The rolls are really yummy!

  • Amanda G.

I'm giving the Wayside 1 star because 0 stars is not an option. The best way describe their fare is this way: If your grandmother went through the Great Depression survived on the bare necessities and came out the other side her food would have more flavor and soul than whatever the Wayside's chef's could concoct. Then theirs the waitresses... Oy! Rough... Do yourself a favor... Drive another mile and go to McDonalds!

I used to eat breakfast here often because it's close to where I work. Service is maddeningly slow here on some days. The service usually improves once the server figures out that you're there, but it can take several minutes to be noticed (and this is early morning when there aren't many other customers). The food is decent - not bad but not anything special either. Prices are reasonable. Prices are a little higher on weekends but still not too bad. If you're lucky enough to get a server who's awake, it's probably worth a try. But don't count on finding a server who's awake.

  • Susan W.

Locals' favorite. Unpretentious diner, without the diner architecture. Prices from the 1940s. Breakfast served all day. Good oatmeal, eggs, home fries, baked potatoes, steak, pork chops, Turkey dinner on Sundays. And for the less adventurous, you can order Goldfish crackers as an appetizer !

    (4)
  • Mike D.

Pretty good. Not much in the way of using local farm fresh. If you need something, this is something. It's in the style of local diner, some local favorite dishes, nothing too outstanding.

My sister and I were in town because the family was doing their whole marathon running thing, while we journey around searching for the best breakfast around. Waitress was friendly, speed of service excellent, my mimosa was tasty, and my sister ate her entire breakfast!

My husband and I decided to try this local favorite for dinner based on Yelp reviews, and we knew as soon as we pulled up that we'd found a gem: OLD PEOPLE. Lots of them. Always a sure fire sign that the food is good. ;) The place has been family run for YEARSSSS, and it shows. The inside is older and could probably use some updating by most's standards, but I thought it had a lot of charm. If it's been there for years, I want it to *look* that way, you know? The hostess was pretty unfriendly, but meh. Only had to deal with her unsmiling self for about 30 seconds before she practically threw our menus on the table and walked off. Bad day? Fight with her boyfriend? Whatever. Our server immediately turned it around, and had us laughing and relaxed. I WISH I could remember her name, but she was teasing me about being from the south and expecting sweet tea in Vermont. Fat chance! Haha. Unsweet everywhere. Bummer. We went simple for dinner: club sandwich with extra tomatoes for me, and the prime rib for the hubby. My sandwich was huge and the mound of hand cut fries didn't disappoint. Yum. I was a tad bit worried about the prime rib, being it was $9 and it appeared to be severely overcooked... Hubby loves medium rare. But he said that it was tender, juicy, and not overcooked at ALL. He said if the au jus hadn't been so salty, it would have been perfect. They also serve house-made rolls while you wait, and they were delicious. Don't miss out on this hometown cafe. We loved it.

  • Azure T.

Maple cream pie - not very good. My steak was cold. The scallops did not have very much flavor and were overwhelmed by the flavor of the cracker topping. My baked potato was served completely dry. I had to get butter from the bread basket. Service was so-so and the rolls were pretty good.

  • Ling Z.

Unlike other reviewers who complained about the service, it was actually fine during our visit. However food was mediocre at best. I ordered the onion rings, sausage gravy and biscuits, & a cup of coffee. Onion rings were the best out of the bunch. Crisp, not too oily, & fried just right so it's not too burnt or oily. Sausage & Biscuits were terrible. Biscuits were doughy and dry. Gravy was bland, fatty tasting, and lots of rubber tasting bits... Yack. Coffee, taste like water. Needed 4 cups just to get some caffeine kick... Farewell...

We just stopped here and after seating ourselves according to instructions on sign at entry we waited 10 minutes and were completely ignored. Ridiculous!! We ended up walking out after watching them wait on people who came in after us. I guess if you aren't a regular you don't matter. We have eaten here several times before and never had this experience so I'm not sure what the problem is.

Highly recommend. Great home style diner, featuring meals like mom used to make. They also serve breakfast all day. Waitress was very friendly and great with my children who were a little wound up. Reasonably priced and we were made to feel like family as soon as we walked in the door

GREAT FOOD! If you're ever in the area this is the place to eat, it's interior is outdated but don't let that throw you the food and customer services is great so are the prices. I had the country fried steak last night it rivaled what I make at home or can even get down south! This place has regular customer who have been going there all their lives to me that says a lot. They have their own bakery, they make Parker rolls for you to munch on until you dinner gets to you they also make cakes, pies, and donuts, what more could you ask for? Oh yeah they are open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

  • Robert F.

Its a diner, and you should plan accordingly. Nothing fancy but sometimes that's just what you need. And its impossible to beat their prices. A hotspot for an excellent breakfast/brunch after a long friday or Saturday night

This is a great place to eat and chat with local people. I have had Breakfast lunch and dinner at this place. I really enjoy the Green mountain breakfast but the Pancakes are really good. Lunch I go with the club and even if a club is not listed they will make it for you like a burger club or bacon club. Dinner I really enjoy the country fried steak. Overall you can get a good meal for a cheep price and the people who own the place are super nice. Thanks for all the great food.

Really a three and a half but I went up since halves aren't an option. Good food and exactly what you'd expect from a diner. Great service. Our waitress was awesome! Give it a try. The place has been around since 1918 so they're doing something right

  • Andrea A.

We always stop here for brunch when we're in Vermont. The portions are quite generous, coffee is decent, they have Moxie (sorta medicinal tasting, pre-Coke fad soda--my VTer boyfriend loves it), as well as donuts and apple pie with cheddar cheese.

    (4)
  • Colin P.

This place has a good atmosphere. I wouldn't say their food is great but its not bad either. Prices are reasonable for what you get. Biggest disappointment here would be their chicken is very dry. Great service.

Slammin' breakfasts! I to go to the Wayside every time I'm in Vermont. They serve delicious meals at a reasonable price and have been in business since Moses was a youngster. My grandmother first took me to the Wayside over 40 years ago and I've yet to have a bad meal there. Lots of real maple syrup is provided for the pancakes and the raspberry squares are like a slice of heaven on earth! They also serve Cabot cheddar cheese and butter from a nearby creamery, which is MUCH better quality than typical diner food. This place is always packed with locals because they have provided great food for decades.

This place is well known in this area and for good reason. It is one of the last good family owned classic style family places in the area. You can get good breakfast type foods and home style cooking here. The prices are decent and you get a good amount of food. The food isn't top notch but it is what is expected. The last time we ate here my boyfriend had a unique beer and yucky tripe. He enjoyed it even if it isn't cup of tea. I was happy with my order of an open face turkey sandwich even if the bread was a little doughy. What I really enjoyed was my waitress kept the coffee refills coming! Over all if you are in the area you have to try this place out. Take heed dinner hour can be busy!

  • Jonathan B.

This place is really affordable, offers the classic diner experience, and the food is decent. Nothing fancy, but everything it should be. Tons of seating, a FULL BAR, breakfast, lunch, and dinner served.

    (3)
  • Lesley G.

Food is always either terribly bland or way over seasoned. Service is hit or miss, but when it's bad, it is REALLY bad.

  • Andrew P.

Got breakfast here, it was pretty good. The parking lot was about parked full with locals, which was a good sign. Would eat breakfast here again for sure, only bad thing was their bakery part, we got a couple items to go after breakfast and they were average basically.

    (4)
  • Michael C.

The locals seem pretty cranky about this place but I found the food was excellent, service prompt and the prices unbelievable. Their soups of the day was fantastic. The menu is extensive. Unfortunately this was a quick stop over on the way to a meeting. Next time I am in the area I will make sure I get here for either dinner or breakfast.

It's a cheap, local diner with an extensive menu and cheap prices. Not sure why there are complaints over the food... I felt I got exactly what I paid for given the location. Service: this is likely my only complaint. It seems the wait staff despise youth as my waitress rarely swung around for refills and requests. There was certainly an attitude that did not make me feel welcome there, which was also supported by the fact my waitress seemed to favor all the other tables. Food/Drinks: As described above, this is exactly what I expected from a place such as this. I feel as though their breakfast items are bit overpriced given breakfast items are super cheap to purchase at the grocery. But they certainly have plenty of other items, and I have no real complaints. Atmosphere: Standard, typical diner atmosphere. Nothing like it. Place certainly caters to the older crowd which is why I felt my presence was not welcome. Overall: 3/5 for the poor service and not outstanding food. But it is certainly par with any other small diner I have been to.

Another homey diner my friend and her husband took me...we went for a brunch before our cornfield maze. I just love the atmosphere of a diner..we don't have too many diner like the ones in east coast where I live, so I was so happy. Food was great, service was great!

Great, and super cheap. I was in Berlin for a week for business with a co-worker and we went there for breakfast and dinner every day. The ingredients are amazing. Where can you get a big ol' side of fiddlehead ferns for a buck? In my dirty jersey neighborhood they cost $14.50 a pound. Nice fresh yeast rolls. Make sure you order off the specials menu.

Yes, the Wayside...Get me a Moxie and let's tune into the DuMont Network and long for the days of yesteryear...Anyway, the Wayside is the restaurant that time has forgotten about and it is a very good thing...I spend too much eating over-priced fare in downtown Montpelier when I should get a hold of a delicious chicken pie or a chicken pot pie - yes, there is a difference between the two. I think that the breakfasts are very overrated (but where else are you going to go...to State and Main for $75.00 2-eggs over easy?). The home-fries are a disaster but my palette has been spoiled by those Long Island and NYC diners... Bests on the menu: Onion rings, fries, burger, chicken pie, chicken pot pie, boiled dinner (usually on Wednesdays), fiddle-heads (as a side when in season). Don't forget the fresh doughnuts and some Bag-Balm on the way out!

The Wayside has been around way way longer than I have, and I've been eating here ever since I was a toddler. Fufilling the classic diner stereotype beautifly, The Wayside is about as traditional as you can get, from the insanely delicious hand-made rolls, to the inexpensive meals, even the waitresses that calls you "hun". Almost every single thing on the menu is good (except the onion rings, they're kinda funky), the food is very cheap, and the wait usually isn't too long if you go when it's busy. A heads up though, every single Senior Citizen in Vermont seems to go here, so expect to be utterly surrounded by old people at all hours of the day, and good luck finding your car amid a sea of Crown Vics and Buicks. XD When you go to leave and check out, do yourself a favor and buy a half-dozen (or hell, a full baker's dozen) of rolls. They're the best bread product you will ever eat. If you're going here for breakfast, you'll be really pleased. For lunch and dinner, well, unfortunately, it's luck of the draw. Oh, and save room for dessert! I promise it's worth it!

This was a very local hangout restaurant that all of the local go to and i have to admit, u can't really beat the price. The menu is basically a home feeling to it and they have alot of choices to pick from such as hamburger, sandwiches and daily special. I order the haddock sandwich w/fries and onion rings. The haddock was ok but u sense the haddock was frozen when they deep fry it. The fries was soggy and the onion rings were frozen too. Overall I wouldn't want to come back here but they do have decent prices and all of the local love it and they have tons of dessert such like their homemade pies and other bakery good.

It's a throwback to take a meal here but it's worth the nostalgia. Dad and I stop here for lunch every time we road trip to vermont from ct. It's become a tradition just for us. We always take photos of our apple pie and send it to granddad in California. (P.s just stick to apple pie, nothing else is as good!) The food isn't terrible... My dad always gets the turkey dinner... I have no idea why... There are so many other tasty things he could try. I'm not much of a meat eater so I lean towards tuna melts and salads. Last time, August 2012, we had the best waitress. I had the vermont cheese salad and while there were offensive strips of American cheese, there was also real Cabot cheddar so that was nice and the veggies were all fresh, no hot house tomatoes! Also, I couldn't make up my mind which dressing I wanted so my sassy but awesome waitress gave me both on the side! AH! The rolls!!! So classic. So perfect. Buttery sweet yummy heaven! The wayside is special to me because its the place for me and dad. When he's gone and I'm all alone in this mad world i hope the wayside will still be around...

The only good thing here is BREAKFAST. I have eaten breakfast, lunch, and dinner here multiple times and the latter two were consistently horrible. By horrible, I mean SALTY as heck with no other flavor. If you go for breakfast, get the Canadian Combo. You won't be disappointed. Also, I feel that I have to mention the service here. It's really just the luck of the draw. I've had wonderful waitresses here, and I've had a few really, really, REALLY bad ones. There was even one occasion where I did not tip the waitress for the FIRST TIME in my life.

If you're from New York, Boston, Montreal or places like that you probably won't care much for The Wayside. For locals the Wayside it THE place for breakfast. It's kinda fast, and the food is inexpensive, filling and well prepared. It's really more like a diner or a truckstop with some class. As it says, I'm a fan and suggest that you at least give it a try. Who knows, you might like it. And remember, The Wayside serves REAL Maple Syrup.

This diner is mentioned TWICE in the book 500 Things to Eat Before It's Too Late, so we had to check it out. This locavore liked that the diner serves locally sourced seasonal ingredients. I had the Broiled Scallops. They were buttery, cooked perfectly, and had a Ritz Cracker crumb topping. Decadent and reminded me of something my grandmother would make. I completed my meal with a piece of rhubarb custard pie. YUMO! It was tart, slightly sweet with a smooth and creamy texture. Heavenly! Sugar Bear had the special: BBQ steak tips with wild rice. The wild rice was actually white rice, but it was still very good. The BBQ sauce was a bit sweet for my taste, but the meat was tender and delish. He had the maple cream pie (mentioned in our book) for dessert. It was very sweet, but incredible. Wayside was the first restaurant on our vacation where we took home food for the next day. I was VERY impressed by their non-styrofoam to go containers. They use biodegradable containers. As we took food to go from other restaurants, we noticed this type of container was standard. Way to go VERMONT! I love that you all are so GREEN!

I'm not sure what the obsession with the Wayside is, other than it is really old and they have a very cute bar with retro chrome stools that are really close to the ground. The price is very CHEAP, but it is reflected in the quality of food. I have been there twice, for breakfast. The service is prompt and swift. I ordered an english muffin with egg and cheese, home fries, and chicken sausage. My husband got french toast. I thought the Wayside was part of the VT Fresh network, so I was expecting Cabot Cheese and local bread or at least the option to upgrade. But that was not the case. My husbands french toast left much to desire, it was unseasoned and made with cheap white bread. Our home fries were pretty much blackened mummified potatoes, I actually heard another customer send them back. Service is good and they do offer a lot of desserts.

If you want to eat at an old time Vermont diner then you need eat at the Wayside. I highly recommend breakfast...it is fresh and so reasonably priced and, where else can you get a great, bottomless cup of coffee for $1.00?
