The Alchemist's Heady Topper IPA lives up to the hype! It's so fresh, so deliciously flavourful that I might just jump on the hoppy wagon. The brewer's description is spot on: "not intended to be the strongest or most bitter DIPA. It is brewed to give you wave after wave of hop flavour without any astringent bitterness." And fortunately, Three Penny had that stuff. I ran down to the convenience store in search of a case to find out that Kevin and Bart (the bartenders) were right - delivery to retail stores happen once a week and the stock is gone by the end of the day. Otherwise great atmosphere at the bar. The beer selection was pretty awesome.

I normally wait to write a review once I've visited a restaurant at least twice, but this is the exception! While in the area I got a tip on how good Three Penny Taproom was. As soon as I walked in I went straight for the chalkboard to check out the draft list. They have the big three I was looking for, The Alchemist Heady Topper, Lawson's Sip of Sunshine, and Hill Farmstead brews! The service was friendly and great. The kids shared a flat bread and fries. My wife and I shared the buttermilk chicken wings as suggested from other reviews and couldn't believe how good they were! We also had the burger special which included a fried green tomato! The next time I make it to the area, this is going to be my first stop!!!

Wow, the burger ($13) really is as good as everyone tells it to be. There's something about the blend of meat and spices that renders the burger super juicy, a tad garlicy, some saltiness, and super flavorful. We got it medium and it was perfect pink. The fries on the side were pretty good but we got the bottom of the batch with all the small broken bits. We also ordered the smoked corn ravioli ($16), which I thought was pretty pricey for 6 medium pieces, but I really wanted ravioli. It was super tasty though, flavors of goat cheese, thyme, corn, and mushrooms. They had The Alchemist - Heady Topper, which was the main reason we went here and it's THE beer to try apparently. I liked it but a pint was way too much for me to drink having shared the burger and ravioli with my sister. It was super bitter, very hoppy, but the flavors were good. Definitely drink it from the can. We went on a Thursday at 1PM and it was pretty packed. There are two entrances. The unmarked one is for the restaurant, while the door with their name/logo is actually for the bar. (We walked in the bar entrance and had to walk back to the other side while inside...) The restaurant is pretty small, with private tables along the side, a big communal table in the middle, and two window/bar seats at the front of the restaurant. We managed to snag the last private table and it was by the window so we could people watch as we inhaled the tasty food. The service was great, and it was pretty dark in the restaurant itself, but I liked that we sat by the window bar seats for privacy instead of a huge communal table with strangers. Plenty of metered parking nearby and the meters take all US coins except pennies.

Burger was good, calamari very nice, the tuna looked really good. Burger cooked to medium rare was very red but no excess juice and tasted really good. I was happy with all I tried!

I don't know what took me so long to make it here. The place has a great vibe! One place, two entrances... and access to the bar on one side and the restaurant on the other. It's a nice separation of space. The bar has a great energy, and the wall between the bar and restaurant keeps the sound from spilling over. There's a great section of draft craft beers! Then over to the restaurant. The idea of a lamb gyro in Vermont was intriguing. Growing up in NYC, and enjoying real gyro in different cities in Greece, I was curious to see what this version was like... it's a good sandwich, but it's not an apples- to-apples comparison to those you can get in NYC or Greece. The meat had a grainier texture, and was a bit too peppery. The housemade pita bread is great, though a little too much bread for a gyro. The housemade tzatziki sauce is awesome, just wish there was more... it was a bit dry. Lastly, not sure where they get their feta, but the texture was a bit off, and the flavor didn't have the punch of feta. Overall, there's a great beer selection, and the lamb gyro was good as a shaved lamb pita sandwich. Definitely, plan to be back.

We stopped by yesterday for a family friendly lunch option while visiting family in Montpelier. Location was great and wasn't hard to find street meter parking at all. We arrived as they opened for lunch. Interior is a nice blend of bar but also Vermont casual, some nice window bar top seats We ordered a variety of things, kids menu isn't an option and not too many vegetarian items either but service was solid and pretty quick. Fish and chips could have had a little more seasoning but fries were yummy and crispy. Great beer selection and we ended up too full and time was almost up for the kiddos so no dessert I'd go back but probably without kids and have a beer, or two

This is a pretty nice pub in downtown Montpelier that has good food and decent beer. I came here with my fiancé for a quick lunch back in late March and weren't disappointed. The burgers we had were mouth-watering and the service was good as well. I enjoyed my beer as well and parking was fairly easy since Montpelier isn't that busy. I definitely suggest this pub if you're in the area and want a good burger or just a couple drinks!

Amazing beer and service to match. Standing room only and not an empty glass in the house.

Often cited as one of the best beer bars in the country, Three Penny Taproom deserves every accolade it gets. You'll probably go there for the beer and you should. The Vermont gems from Hill Farmstead, The Alchemist, Lawson's Finest - they are all there. They are all delicious. But it's certainly worth your while to delve into their delicious take on pub fair as well. I went with the hamburger with bleu cheese and a Hill Farmstead Edward. I did not choose poorly. Crazy delicious from every angle. Honestly, if you're in the upper Vermont area just do yourself a favor and fucking go there.

I have been told that July 3 is the biggest night of the year in Montpelier, VT I kept that in mind when I wrote this. Service.... Terrible.....I'm really not that hard to please. Really I'm not. 35 minute wait on a busy night, that's not bad at all. We'll wait in the bar. The was packed. 3 deep. Not because it was the busiest night of the year. They only had 1 bartender behind the bar..For the first 10 min we waited there was only 1 bartender behind the bar. When a second bartender did get behind the bar it took him 5 to 10 minutes to set up. We did finally get a beer after 27 minutes and a lot of effort. Now why on busiest night of the year would you only have 2 bartenders on duty? That's just stupid. Okay its a little tight back there but for the most part they where pouring drafts. Not to difficult to come up with a system. Have a runner or two to fetch ice, collect glasses etc...or just draw drafts. Wait staff was better. The restaurant side was way less busy and they all seemed on top of things until the end. No one ever came to take our check. We waited for what seemed a long time before I brought the cash to the maître d' + 20% and left. The beer I liked a lot.....I had a few Lost Nation Vermont Pilsners and very much enjoyed them. Crisp, light, full of flavor The beer selection was pretty deep as well. I could see watching a hockey game sometime and trying a few of their other selections (on a slow day). The food: Really good... The best part of the night. Roasted corn ravioli was intersecting, showed imagination & packed with flavor. Fried Pig Tails... never heard of them, had to try them. I feel really guilty about it but I loved them.. Veggie flatbread was cooked perfectly. It was soft yet crispy (found it soggy at other places) We also tried Harissa fried Chickpeas. We where split on that. My wife (the vegetarian) loved them.... I can't forget the crowd.....A lot of hipster wane be deep types, inked up, wearing trucker hats and long beards with JCrew and Polo jerseys... Trying way to hard. That was the majority of people but not all. Just thought it worth mentioning. The menu was eclectic and better than most Pubs or Taverns. So the food could bring you back and over come the rest of the so so and obnoxious.....

Ehren the bartender says he only wants one and a half stars so there is room for improvement but I can't imagine that is even possible. The place is awesome enough but Ehren makes it a while nother level of entertainment and enjoyment. The list of beers reads like a hall of fame of Vermont beer. Personally I enjoyed the sip of sunshine and society and solitude. They are double ipas and delicious. Also the Harissa chickpeas were to die for.

Had lunch on a rainy Vermont day, really enjoyed it! The guys ordered burgers and said it might be the best burger ever eaten! The girls had the grilled cheese sandwich with arugula and tomatoes and we thoroughly enjoyed it!

This review is for the bar only. Loved the beer selection. It was hilarious that there was a sign by the bar stating that they did not serve Busch products. With the growing micro brewery trend it is nice to see local bars supporting them. I enjoyed the Trapp Family Lodge Oktoberfest that I had at a different place in Waterbury. Once I found out the brewers didn't bottle it I was obligated to enjoy another pint of this delicious beer. The staff was really friendly. We didn't have a problem ordering beers even though the bar was packed due to college football Saturday. Would love to come back and try their food.

Ate dinner there Friday night, beer was great, the wings were really good. Also had the bacon burger and gotta say one of the best burgers I have had in a long time. The fries were thin cut and I had the pepper mayonnaise dipping sauce, that was good. One draw back we sat in the window seat and felt like we were on display. Great atmosphere and busy and I se why.

"We proudly do not serve any Anheuser Busch Products". That right there made me smile. Being in VT, you get to drink quality craft beverages any time of day. There are a plethora of breweries all over. This place was somewhat busy on the cold, blistery Sunday afternoon we stopped by. We were heading back to MA and stopped for lunch. We were seated right away and the french fries and burgers smelled divine. I opted though for the grilled cheese and butternut soup combo. It was good but I have the say the onions overpowered much of the taste. My husband ordered the meat flatbread. While it was good, it wasn't anything to brag home about. The beer selection is great. You can find something you like there. Service is friendly but not too overbearing. I would stop here again.

Had a burger for a lunch. It was tasty! The meat was rare and super juicy. I ordered fries for a side and it was good too. The service was friendly as well. I really liked Montpelier downtown!!

I liked everything about this place. Very friendly bartender, a sign behind the bar proudly proclaiming that they do not serve any Anheuser-Busch products, and an excellent beer list including many local Vermont brewers that I doubt are even available in Boston (yet.) I had a couple of beers and the daily burger special, which was served with bacon and roasted chili peppers. It backed a nice amount of heat, which justified more beer purchases. Great spot that I will definitely visit again when I'm in Montpelier.

Be careful when eating here, as while it may taste good, the food is improperly prepared, which resulted in violent illness for close to a week, a cancelled gig and the end of a trip for me. My phone call afterward with an incredibly arrogant asst. manager Aaron Hill was just insult to injury (quite literally). I went to the Three Penny Taproom when passing through Montpelier on my way to Montreal from Boston. I enjoy eating good food, but was not super hungry- my assistant while with me wanted to go out so we decided on this establishment. I wanted to eat light, so I got a simple salad made with watercress and cold chicken. It tasted pretty good. This is where everything went south. I became violently ill that night in ways best not described in a public forum. So ill that I needed to cancel the shoot I was on my way to in Canada (I am a photographer) this lost me several thousand dollars and also blemished my reputation. I called and complained about this and spoke to a woman whose name I was unable to get, she apologized profusely and assured me I would be refunded as soon as she got this information to her manager. I remained ill for the next 4 days, unable to even drive myself home to Boston. It is now two weeks later and I have not been refunded. The story continues. I called again today to explain my issue and figure out why my refund had not been issued. The assistant manager, Aaron Hill answered. He spoke over me, attempted to tell me that I wasn't sick from their food (despite it being my only meal of the day aside from toast), and then best of all: he laughed at me when I asked to speak to the general manager. I've never seen such outward disregard for a customer, and quite frankly I'm disgusted by the way I was treated. This was not about a refund for a stupid 11 dollar salad, and I was not seeking to be compensated for the gig I lost. I simply wanted to have my problem addressed and at least the common courtesy of a polite employee to speak to. Obviously, my business won't matter to these people, as I live in Boston and don't generally spend much time in Vermont. But that being said, do yourself a favor as a local or traveler, and dine elsewhere. You might save yourself a week of misery and the rudest staff I've ever spoken to. This is the least I can do, as the establishment itself is clearly unwilling to listen.

The bartenders Kevin and Bart are world class. The fried chicken has to be one of the best I've ever had. Also the beer selection is second to none. Would recommend Three Penny Taproom to anyone who asked.

In the heart of beer brewing leader Vermont, amazing tasting of taps and foods to complement the brews. Beer list changes almost hourly, plus plenty of unique bottles and cans to choose from. As well wines for that friend who hasn't developed your shared savoring of hops, malt, yeast and water. Affordable tastings like spicy roasted peanuts, amazing buttermilk wings with good sauces. If you get fried chickpeas, dip those in the side of wing sauces, YUM!

Traveling on a road trip up the New England coast from Chicago we stopped at the tap room due to the reviews and beer selection. Especially, due to Heady Topper being delivered that day. While the beer selection was excellent ( which is why I am giving it 2 stars instead of 1) the food was a 1 in rating. We ordered the wings because another couple had ordered and they looked to be delicious. When we received our wings they were undercooked on the inside and bland. My boyfriend ordered a burger due to the server raving about the burgers and I ordered the pappardelle. The burger was over cooked and dry on the inside. The pappardelle was truly just inedible. The pappardelle was spicy but very bland. I tried to put salt on it, however nothing would make it more edible. While it is a slower pace than my boyfriend and I are used to, the service was extremely slow taking a good hour and fifteen minutes for an appetizer and 2 entrees. Though Montpellier is a very cute and quaint town, if ever here again we will be trying a different establishment.

Hipster Heaven. If it makes you feel good to pay too much for beer because, hey, it's cool, man... If it makes you feel good to pay too much for tiny portions of food, because, hey, man, it's cool... This is the place for you. If you've ever felt like you were way cooler than the next table over because of your groovy facial hair... Stay away, they're way cooler than you. But, that said; good, (expensive), beer selection and great owners/good staff. Enjoy, you furry little hipsters!

I am a fan of this taproom. I like the bar atmosphere as well as the dining area- exposed wood= quintessential Vermont. The food is great (especially the grilled cheese with caramelized onions!) and the beer selection is great. I love that I can order amazing brews like the pilsner from the Trapp brewery and a variety of beers from the Hill Farmstead. They definitely have a good tap selection. This place gets crazy crowded and I prefer to go when I can perch at the bar and throw a few delicious beers back with a friend. Great spot and friendly staff.

This place is awesome! We stopped here on our way from Boston to Montreal. Fantastic beer selection, and all the food was incredible. We got the cheese sampler, corn bread, and pig tails to start. The corn bread tasty almost meaty, it was delicious. My friend ordered an Italian sub and proclaimed multiple times that it was the best he'd had in a long time (he eats a lot of Italian subs). Final words: "I feel like sometimes you eat for the sake of eating, and then you have a meal like that."

Nice day, graduation. Family of 10 walked into an empty restaurant and we were told they could not seat us?!?! What the...??? "It wouldn't be fair to our other customers." What customers?...it was EMPTY! Very rude staff! Walk down the street to Positive Pizza!! Nice nice people there!

There aren't very many moments in my life where I instantaneously realize that I am at the right place at the right time at the right moment. Walking into Three Penny Taproom was one of these moments. My first "oh shit!" moment dawned upon me when I walked in through the door and I noticed a very pretty girl sitting by herself at the small table closer to the door. Behind that pretty girl I saw a giant flag bearing the crest of the best football club this world has yet to see -- the colors of the mighty FC Barcelona were in full display at the bar. Not to take any credit away from the pretty girl, of course. The second "oh shit!" moment dawned upon me when I sat down and saw that during a week when Lawson's was unavailable on tap everywhere else because they were busy preparing for their first Waitsfield Market / Hill Farmstead Anniversary Event, they were carrying Sip of Sunshine on tap. The third "holy shit!" moment dawned upon me when being in an overly giddy mood, I glanced over my left shoulder and noticed their bottle list, and saw Lawson's Rum-barrel Fayston's Maple Stout being served for $15 dollars. Not that having tasted what has since then become my favorite stout should bias me into giving a better review for this place, it kept my buzz going and made me fall even further in love with the pretty girl at the tabl--I mean, Three Penny Taproom. It was evident that I wasn't the only person who was having these feelings about TPT that fateful day when I set foot upon the establishment for the very first time--sitting two chairs away from me at the bar was a homely looking lady in her late 30s waxing lyrical about the bar because they carried her two favorite beers of all time in Hill Farmstead Edward and Alchemist's Heady Topper. Point being, everyone seems to love the pretty girl at tabl--again I mean, Three Penny Taproom. I'd come here in between having a hefty lunch elsewhere and expecting to eat dinner with someone in Burlington so I opted to get the flank steak salad and it did not disappoint--I think somebody mentioned in a previous review that there is a negative correlation between the portion size and quality of food here, but I wish to dispel such claims as the salad (yes, a salad!) left me so full that I pushed my dinner appointment to two hours after its intended time. Oh, and the flank steak salad was as good as a flank steak salad can be. So to summarize: excellent atmosphere, great beer, good food/portions, and pretty girl at the table. What more can you ask for in life?

One of my all time favorite bars, there's just something about this place. Friendly and knowledgeable bartenders, fantastic beer selection (a ton of local micros) and a great vibe. I'm going back for more tonight and we'll definitely visit again the next time we come to Montpelier.

Best burger in town! I have also been very pleased with their wings (although there seems to be some consistency issues as one time we got the wings and they were over cooked and dry, to their credit it was the busiest I have ever seen them), the ahi tuna sandwich is amazing and the chicken liver pate was out of this world. I have been there probably around 20 times and only once wasn't totally pleased with my experience (found the soup lackluster). Their beer list can not be beat. Only reason I didn't give them 5 stars is because service can be quite slow sometimes, but hey, that gives you more time to enjoy the fabulous beers!

The food here is incredible, especially the salads and the burgers. The seasonal salad was with blueberries, goat cheese, glazed walnuts with a beautiful vinaigrette. The beer selection is on point with lots of local VT brews. My local friend suggested the burgers and it did not go wrong! They were absolutely delicious with a good side of thin cut and perfectly crispy fries. Great atmosphere, good service. I could see myself here all the time if I lived anywhere near Montpelier!

The food here was amazing! I got the cheeseburger with fries and thoroughly enjoyed every single bite. The burger was juice and cooked just as ordered with real vermont cheddar. The fries crispy were crispy and tasty and the beer selection excellent.

  • Christopher L.

Taste of Food: 5/5 stars Serving Size Portions: 1/5 stars Why the low review? Just like others, serving size portions is way too small for their price point. I got the burger which was a little bigger than a slider. BEWARE, my wife got the gnocchi. While the Gnocchi was delicious, it was more of an appetizer portion size, unacceptable. So if you plan on getting the Gnocchi, make sure you order a second entree.

Killer beer board. That in itself is not so out of the blue in VT, but in concert with that ridiculously good burger, its 5 stars. The best burger at this price point I've ever had (Craigie on Main's is better, but pricier and often a reservation is needed). But this was orgasmic.

Terrible, TERRIBLE customer service and freezing cold food. My husband's potatoes with his steak were FREEZING cold. I told the waitress to touch them and she would not. My fries AND burger were barely warm. She looked as if she didnt know what to do. She did not even offer to take the food back to the kitchen to warm it up. She came back about half way through our meal and told us that she talked to the kitchen people because her other customers have also complained. We were like, thanks for the info. She didnt even apologize. We left our cold food behind and paid the bill and trust me, she got the minimum 15% tip and it pained me to even leave that!!

Fantastic food, great service. Some in our party have food restrictions, staff did not raise an eyebrow, gave us alternatives. Everyone very knowledgeable of the dishes served, 100% perfect lunch, will return every time we are in VT. Cheers!!

Insane beer selection! Delicious food! AMAZING staff! 5 stars! I have only been once, as I live out of town, but there were two bartenders on a busy Saturday night and they gave our group excellent service!! We sampled almost every beer on tap, and they kept coming up with suggestions to try this, try that. It was a fantastic experience. What I need to know is... WHAT IS IN THAT BLACK BEAN SOUP??? I was there 3 months ago and I STILL think about that soup!

My husband and I had the pleasure of enjoying lunch at the Three Penny Taproom. We both ordered the double burger with cheddar. The burger was huge and awesome and cooked to perfection. Our server was gracious and friendly, and the ambiance was cool and casual. The fries were to die for. Ours came with little ramekins of ketchup and mayonnaise, so we could alternate between being American or European. A delight. We will absolutely be back.

Ryan was the man! Buttermilk wings, Burger of the day, salami sandwich, shoestring sandwich. Beer selection was fantastic but the service was even better. They legally can't serve Budweiser according to their mantra, which I appreciate. Check out the stein selection.

Something about this restaurant made me feel like it was trying really hard to be a foodie gastropub but it just wasn't quite cutting it. I got a poached chicken salad which came with an overpoweringly sweet dressing and wasn't very interesting or tasty. My boyfriend got the burger which he felt was nothing to write home about.

    (2)
  • John A.

I really wanted to love this place because the tap list is amazing. But the food was mediocre at best and the waitstaff had no clue. The golden rule of gastropub dining is never let a man sit with an empty glass. Well, I sat with an empty glass for a long, long time because my waitress was nowhere to be found. Ever. It's not like we were in here on a busy Saturday night. It was a Monday at 2:00pm. As for the food, it's nothing special and something I could have whipped up in my kitchen with 5 minutes and a Foreman grill. Also, just a detail but nonetheless very important if you're trying to run a legit brew pub. I was served a session pale ale in a snifter and my neighbor was served a black IPA in a pilsner glass. You'd figure these bartenders would know proper glassware. It's too bad because the beer list really is something special. The great local beer saves this place from the gastropub doldrums. The tap list features brews from Hill Farmstead, Lawson's and of course they have Heady Topper. It's worth a stop if you're traveling up to Waterbury and don't mind lowering your standards for a bit.

Just writing a long overdue review of this place. I've been 5 times over the last 3 years and, as the ultimate compliment, wish I lived closer. The beer list is always second to none, as the 3 penny is one of the original vermont 'beer bars'. The food-it pairs well with a beer oriented menu. The portions are never over-sized, usually just right. Service has never been an issue here, either. I'm really confused by some of the negative and even angry reviews of one of my favorite pubs. But to each their own~

  • T B.

Love this bar. They lose half a star for not having outdoor seating, but honestly the place is awesome ... and you can't do a 4.5 star rating. The beer selection is large & varied. A friend of mine is friends with Scott & Matt and is helping them prep for their 1 year anniversary on May 1st. Talking to them, their goal is not to stock all of the local microbrews all the time - their goal is to have a wide variety of microbrews from all around the US & the world and rotate them constantly. Love the idea. They have a wide selection of beer prices and the fancy beers come in glasses designed by the brewery for their beer.

    (5)
  • Mike K.

Fairly typical bar when you walk in. Nice tap list with emphasis on local brewers. Two bartenders - one kind of gruff and one very friendly. As someone else said, the menu is pretty limited. The gruff one suggested the grilled cheese, which was very good. Prices in line with other establishments.

I am a big fan of this place, right in the downtown part of Montpelier. I've been here a few times and i have yet to have a bad experience, which makes it all the better. They recently expanded which has increased space/tables for them which is a great addition as well because they have gotten increasingly busier due to their style and flare. They are a craft brew home nestled in the small capital of Vermont. If you know beer, this is a destination location for you because they are that niche place that has all those hard to find, unique brews that come from all over. They have several taps that are constantly changing to provide the people of Montpelier with different, specialty craft brews as well as showcasing the fantastic craft that comes from the greater New England area. Not only drafts, but they have bottles shipped to them as well which spans from everything from Green Flash from San Diego or the sought after Pliney the Elder from Russian River in Northern CA to unique brews from around the world. Not only that, but they create fun craft cocktails as well as have a fantastic menu to support their craft beer selection. Small plates are available if you are looking for a small snack while you socialize with friends or entrees if you are looking to satisfy the hunger. Either way you will not be disappointed with what these guys have to offer. Besides, they are locals just like you.

I only write reviews if we have an exceptional meal/experience. We stopped in Montpelier after the Green Mountain Stage Race on Labor Day tired with two tired and hungry kids. Our server, Dillon, could not have been more pleasant and fast. We had our five-year-old's meal, a truly delicious grilled cheese with shoestring fries, within minutes. Our meals followed quickly. We each had salads, mine with blue cheese and awesome steak cooked perfectly; my husband's a mix of local greens, corn and in season veggies. Both were flavorful and filling. We were expecting basic pub fare and could not have been more pleased to be wrong. Nice ambiance and good separation of the dining area from the bar, beautiful wood tables, clean family-friendly bathrooms. A great and unexpected break from our long road trip home to Maine.

Came through and grabbed a burger with my boyfriend. Burger was delicious and fresh; you can tell everything right down to the mayo is house-made, which is something the two of us love. A little pricey, but then again it's downtown Montpelier and 16$ was well worth it for the quality of food we got. Not to mention, the fries were awesome! I will be back again.

Stopped here en route to Waterbury, as is the custom when traveling from Jersey to VT for beer. Even on a Sunday afternoon, the bar was busy but not crowded. Initially, we sat in front of the window in the dining area but moved to the bar when we went back for our second beers. Draft and bottles were varied and many beers were local: Hill Farmstead, Lawson's, and of course, Heady Topper from the Alchemist. Prices were reasonable and the bartender was nice. Can't comment much on the food since all I ate were frites. They were good though: freshly cut, crispy, and served with mayo. The menu looked great and, though small, was full of plates with locally sourced ingredients: a commonality through the area. TPT is definitely a must-stop if you're doing the craft beer drive through VT.

I was pretty excited to try Three Penny Taproom while passing through Montpelier for lunch. On a freezing winter day, I opted to try the hunter's stew with winter vegetables. Unfortunately, I was a bit shocked by the ridiculously small portion size. I had two small cubes of venison in a stew that consisted mostly of potatoes. The rest of the stew was good, but it wasn't something that I couldn't make myself in a crock pot. For a meal that cost $15, it was completely unsatisfying. I wish I could've enjoyed a beer or two since they're well known for their craft beer, but I had a long drive ahead of me.

I can't believe that I had never been here before yesteryday and have lived in the Montpelier area for almost a year. Great spot! The bartenders were able to answer any questions we had, which was great. The selection was outstanding. I don't find myself with a beer in my hand that often, but the 2 that I had were amazing. My boyfriend and I will definitely be back!

Great place that has been serving a great variety of interesting and hard-to-find beers from around the country and the world since 2009. Very nice and knowledgable staff that can provide a great deal of entertainment if you are short on company or not interested in the sports on TV. They had some kind of English soccer on when we visited. Don't expect to see offerings from the Bud, Coors or Miller megabreweries among their 24 taps. Just good, fresh honest beers, many from small businesses or mom an' pop operations. It's a gem. If you're a beer lover anywhere near VT, this place is well worth a Saturday drive. The menu is very limited, but reasonably priced.

Any service establishment that posts a sandwich board outside saying something to the effect that 'this isn't an adult psychiatric establishment' is highly suspect to begin with. My less than half dozen experiences at TPT have been of the 'you're kidding me' category. Pleasantly and in a relaxed manner enquiring how my 30-minutes-and- counting hamburger is doing as the people who ordered after me are wolfing down some great smelling burgers and I'm sew hongreh, solicited 'This isn't Macdonald's and it'll come when it comes". Ekeh. Then there was the time that I went for a pint (actually a much less than a pint) and hockey/soccer on the flatscreen TV and tried to engage the 'server' behind the bar with a few opening comments only to be totally ignored . Hey I can be alone and drink much more beer at home alone. Dark and dingy from the outside ( are they open or not ?) and not much improved inside I've racked my brains so try to comprehend how this business thinks it is doing the right thing, or, for that matter, how others see it that way too. Lack of alternative is all I can come up with. Recently I read a frighteningly revealing article by Megan James in 7-Days, on a potentially dangerous experience she had at another Montpelier establishment, The Mad Taco, sister establishment to the TPT crowd and equally embracing of the mechanics outhouse décor. Opening a jar of hot sauce marked 'fuckin' hot' and available to all (small children/elderly/allergic) and sniffing it she ended up screaming, unable to see, slobbering and in great discomfort (and she might even be a breast feeding mother passing on all that unnecessary pain to her unborn infant). This experience viewed by others trying to enjoy their food as she spluttered and screamed on the floor. When she managed to regain her composure she stated that she thought she caught the taco mechanic's half smile and read that as meaning that she was now 'one of them' and all the source of this insanity became so abundantly clear to me. I roared with laughter when I 'saw the light'. Not funny though...but seriously. sad. Some of you may recall a restaurant in Boston years back which was the hip thing to experience because the wait staff called you 'douchebag' and generally insulted you and humiliated you. This appealed to the laugh at the kick-in-the-crotch crowd and, so it seems does the un-service, dingy decor and lighting, rudeness and lack of sympathy to single folks, especially the elderly by the Valley's local badboys at TPT and TMT. I get it now guys. It's the un-Montpelier establishment. Hell , if I want an alternative to the local gentry I'll go to Barre to drink, at least it's genuine and unpretentious. I wouldn't give these two joints even Tuppence. Kurt Weil or no Kurt Weil. Pathetic.

Came here while on a ski trip and it was fantastic! The bar connects to another dining room and both have great atmospheres. Of course the beer selection was great; my brother ordered and loved the Honeymakers tea mead, which we unsuccessfully tried to track down in nearby stores. The food was also really great...not a huge selection but what they do offer is full of taste and originality. And the waitress was super friendly and sweet. Overall, the perfect ending of good food and beer to a long day of skiing

I have a small beer obsession, so it should come as no surprise that I've had the Three Penny Taproom on my radar for a while now. Fortunately work obligations required me to pass through Montpelier around lunch time, so I made a point of stopping in. The draft list is fantastic as advertised. I had some more driving to do and my favorite Hill Farmstead offering was on draft (Ephraim) so I did not venture beyond that. I ordered the regular size burger which was a little smaller than I was expecting, but was honestly about as perfect as I have ever had. As I took my first bite juices exploded onto my face and gooey goodness delighted my mouth. Safe to say no part of that burger was left behind. I sat at the bar so I can't speak to the table service. The bartender was friendly but a little quiet. The menu is fairly limited, so if you are looking for a full menu/wide selection of entrees this might not be the spot. If you want to pour some world class beers down your throat and eat some scrumptious though limited selections then get in there.

One reviewer wrote that the menu is constrained. I totally agree with that. There's a sense of "i'm better than you because i say 'locally-sourced' all day" that impacted the service. Like another review, I also noticed the item f*ggots on the menu. Please hold your whine about the history of food and your narrative about being foodie-oriented & secure about using this word in "your" foodie world. Because in my world, this kinda language still means something awful, and i HATE HATE being triggered when i'm about to sit down to enjoy lunch on a bright sunny day in vermont. Please be mindful about the humanistic joy of eating and nourishment, and hold the tomato (oh, wait you did), the ketchup (never mind, the ketchup is in season apparently...), and your grubby disgusting handling of words. LIVE UPDATE: in Medford, MA graffiti of swastikas have come down the town like a plague. I'm triggered. Of my memory of this restaurant. Truth. Now, that's not a good feeling you wanna give off as a business, am i right?

Writing as a traveler. Pretty cool beer and cool guys pouring it. A great selection on draft. They have a number of beer from Brooklyn, CA, VT, and some elsewhere. It alsohas a very diverse selection of pilsners, ales, ipas, stouts, and even meed. Nice for afterwork. Beware of the hippies coming in after dark.

Amazing beer selection. Although they only give you 4oz when you pay 8 bucks. The 13 dollar burger was a slider and came with a salad that was only spinach. The chicken winter vegetable salad was just chicken walnuts and spinach. Definitely just a pretentious bar that is only able to survive because of the beer selection which is overpriced.

  • Dave B.

This place feels like it has an identity crisis and doesn't know if it wants to be a pub or not. The food is pretty good but the menu seems overly constrained...I liked what I had (pasta with a "root vegetable bolognese sauce") and my wife liked her burger (which was laughably undersized), but a few more classic simple pub offerings would have been appreciated (sandwiches might have been nice). And it was really cold inside, that made it hard to enjoy lunch. Excellent beer menu.

  • Sam G.

Wait. There's something on the menu called "f*ggots butcher's meatballs and carrots." I get the historical origin of the word, 'f*ggot,' but still wtf. nit something i wantto deal with when i just want a hamburger. You can't get tomato on your hamburger unless its in season. They offer sprouts or pickles as a replacement. It's like they don't 'get' hamburgers. ...Acutally, it's not _like_ they don't 'get' hamburgers. They DO NOT GET HAMBURGERS. They're these little slider things with a bun that doesn't fully cover the pattie. Without tomatoes and lettuce, the cheesburger from this place is just a greasy handful of beef... Maybe I should have ordered the f*ggots. I'm never coming back and I'll think twice before stepping into any place with a 'local focused menu.' It may be a good concept, but you don't eat concepts. You eat hamburgers...or you try to until you get thwarted by this place. These folks, also, apparently, eat f*ggots. Or at least they feel comfortable cooking them up and putting them in the oven and then handing over them to you.

I returned to the Three Penny yesterday for some pints and a burger. There was no food service at 4:30 pm on a Sunday so we went to Worthy Burger, but the pints were still excellent and the service was good. I recommend the Rasputin Imperial Stout and the Hop Session Ale from Founders.

This restaurant is divided into two separate areas fro the bar and the restaurant area. It seemed plenty of locals were present having after work drinks in full when me and my party arrived around 6 or 7 pm. The chalkboards throughout the front of dining area and around the bar displayed a fairly wide variety of beers both local and a little further out in the US, though the prices didn't seem that different from anything I can find in New York City. Same goes for the food prices as well. It took them a while to seat us despite telling us it would only take 10 minutes, but the decor was warm looking despite being a bit small. Fried Oyster appetizer - delicious with several pieces of oysters. My buddy looooooved this. Fried Chicken liver - Also very delicious and well cooked. The honey mustard dijon that came with this added a really delicious kick to it, garnish with some nice greens. Burger - really good, quality, tasty burger meat. Pot Roast - this was what was making the delicious smell that I could detect hanging in the room. I thought it was a bit of a small portion, but I am somewhat greedy, and this was really really tasty. All in all I'd recommend this restaurant.

Very impressive selection of beer on tap and some killer burgers.Adore this place. I instantly fell in love with the Mead Hybrid they had on tap. Honeymaker Apple Cyser. This shit is" crack sprinkles" goodness. Grassfed burgers were smothered in Vermont cheddar cheese (DUH) and huge strips of apple wood smoked bacon. The house made pickles mean BIZZness. Oh and if your not getting a medium rare burger , then you are doing it wrong. Really solid experience all around. Nothing but love for my favorite State of Vermont.

This place is so much more than a taproom. For me & a few friends, it's literally a destination in itself. Headed to Burlington? We stop here. Montreal? Take the VT way instead of NY; stop here. I wouldn't even think of being in the area w/o coming here. I've only sat at the bar, although the additional dining room with community table is an awesome idea. The bartenders are: a) very friendly, b) knowledgeable, c) efficient (even when the place is packed), d) all of the above. Answer: D. The beer selection is the best I've ever seen; I always start with an Edward, then move on to other selections. There is something for everyone here in terms of beer. The food is also fantastic, although probably a bit on the pricey side for pub grub. However, you get what you pay for. Imaginative, fresh, locally sourced products. I don't eat out very much because of 2nd rate ingredients, non-organic produce, steroid/antibiotic laced meats, etc etc. I don't think twice about eating here. 3Penny, I love you. I hope you never go away. Bonus Points: Always willing to throw soccer on the television.

Hitting up the TPT for a burger is such a treat when I come into Montpelier. Next to the Kismet burger, it's the best one in town. Also, the beer selection is amazing...I discovered my new favorite beer here - Hill Farmstead. I adore all of the servers and consistently have had a sweet dining experience. I'm looking forward to trying the brunch menu one of these days.

This place has got to be one of the best bars I've ever been to. Not only do they sell some of the best beers in the world, they also have awesome food. I stopped in yesterday on the way back down to MA from the Alchemist in Waterbury, Vt. This place is easy to find right off 89 and parking was right around the corner on a side street. All of the beers are properly labeled with ABV, glass size, origin and price. I had two Lawson's Finest which were great. Since I wasn't in the mood to try anything special I got a single burger. Man this thing was tall. Not sure how I would eat a double but maybe if I was super hungry. Bun was nice and fresh and meat was cooked perfectly. Even had some grilled onions on top. There were several other options that sounded pretty good too. Oh and they have several options for fries. I got mine with malt vinegar.

Best bar in Montpelier hands down. Its a bit small inside, but never seems to be too over crowded. Service is prompt and knowledgable. The impressive selection of beer is what makes them stand out though. They always have a couple of the harder to find VT beers (Hill Farmstead & Lawsons) on tap with an interesting mix of non-VT selections. Food is good and surprisingly cheap as well.

This place was awesome. I wish it was closer to home. Stopped in with my girlfriend on the way to Jay Peak. Great beers, food and service. We were able to sit at the bar. The bartenders are pleasant, fun and knowledgeable. You could tell that the food was fresh. I had the chicken wings and my girlfriend had the grilled cheese. I'll be going out of my way to stop by again soon.

quite possibly the best bar/ taproom of them all. LOADS of local selections of beer on tap, as well as some other tasty options from a far. The prices also aren't bad either. They don't serve any anheuser busch products..what so ever, and probably wont. But they do have pbr bottles. which are really cheap. either 2 or 3$ I forgot. But they play a fun game that if you guess the suit and number under the cap correctly your drink is free! how exciting is that. they also just built and opened, well expanded their place. They now serve even more food! how exciting. I haven't been there since, but I heard its still just as delicious and amazing. Their food is quite possibly the best, hands down the best adult grilled cheese I will ever have. This place is just wonderful and the owners are incredibly funny and great guys. even the bartenders are sensational. I miss this place and its my number 1 to go to place when in Montpelier.

The best bar in New England opens the best restaurant in foody Vermont. The new, full kitchen is not wasted on any standard fare. Chef Matthew creates spectacularly creative dishes that are locally sourced and complemented by a menu of beer-based cccktails that will knock your socks off -- literally and figuratively. The most enjoyable dining experience we've had in years -- and we've had some good ones. Four of us ordered nearly half the menu and everything was spectacular. All that and the best bartenders/owners in the biz. Congratulations on a home run, 3PT. Keep Smiling!

Good stuff. Nice brewpub. The kind of place where the servers/bartenders took pride in figuring out what brew you really want if you don't know yourself. And ours did that very well. It's a little dark inside but otherwise inviting. I ordered the mussels/fries (moules marniere I think - I don't speak French!) and they tasted better than they looked. Mind you, the dish looked good but I was expecting mini Paris or Brussels. Well, it had a great flavor, both in the mussels and in the broth. The fries were good. The husband's steak/fries/some good sauce stuff was quite tasty too. Yum.

With an ever changing menu of local, domestic, and international craft brews on tap, the Three Penny Taproom is THE place in central VT for beer lovers. The owners and the help are very knowledgable, professional, and friendly. Their yearly anniversary party truly shows just how much this place rocks. I recommend going in and asking what's weird tonight? From Red Rice to Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme I have had some truly unique brews there over the years. Above and beyond what happens in the bar is the commitment of the owners to improving the community. With countless donations to food banks, disc golf, and more, Matt, Scott, and Wes are truly doing everything that they can to make the world a better place.

Great spot for some VT beer and great local food. Stopped in with wife on a Sunday afternoon and was very pleased. Great atmosphere. Down to earth, not pretentious like most similarly themed spots in Boston. Beer selection was top notch; finally got to try something from Lawson's Finest-- a wheat maple. Was just okay, but that is a different review. Also ordered a burger delicious and perfectly cooked. Will definitely be back to this place.

I feel like I have been to Three Penny Taproom enough to give it a fair review. It is awesome. Period. You have to go and eat here, as well as drink here. I have eaten burgers all over the country, and this is by far the best burger I have ever had. They take a temp for a 1/4 lb burger, and cook it to perfection every time. They salt the buns, make there own mayonnaise for the burger and offer a double if you feel like you can handle it. I've eaten both the double and the single numerous times and love it. I wet for brunch today and even at ten o'clock in the morning I had to waiver between the burger and French toast. I ultimately got the French toast which was amazing, as was the squash soup and grilled cheese my wife got. The best thing is that the brunch menu is always changing. Every week it's different. I've had everything from breakfast pasta with bacon and eggs, to a breakfast BLT with spicy house made pickles and peanut butter(which was great, don't judge until you try it). Not only do they have incredible local, seasonal and exciting food, but they serve some of the best craft beer around and have excellent service. Kenna, our bartender today was ever present but never hovered, and did nothing less than smile the whole time. There whole staff is welcoming and warm, and never makes you feel stupid when you ask about beer. Needless to say, if you are ever in Montpelier or within a 50 mile radius you should stop by, sit at the bar (if there is space) grab a beer and indulge your inner foodie.

The beer selection here is phenomenal. If you are a beer geek and want very good beers on tap, this is the place to go. One of the customers there said this was one of the 25 best places in the world to get a beer--I can believe that as the the selection is very very good. Also, this is one of very few places you can drink Heady Topper (The Alchemist brewery). I will definitely be returning for a beer the next time I'm in Vermont.

I thought three penny was just ok. Hubs and I were really looking forward to going because of the yelp reviews. We arrived in Montpelier around 12:30 on Saturday and went inside at 1 when they opened. Their tap list was ok. I had been looking forward to having the Alchemist heady topper since the Alchemist is closed, but they didn't have it on tap. Most of the beers they had were ones I've had other places. They also only had oysters on the menu (at $3 each, and I hate to pay more than $1.50 for oysters. I've been spoiled by oyster happy hours). No other food available so we only stayed for one beer. I bet it's a fun place to get your drink on at night when you're not super hungry. I wish I could have tried the delicious food everyone is talking about!

  • Elena T.

Everything a Taproom should be; faint smell of beer and hops as you walk in, friendly, but not too friendly, bartender and lots and lots of beer to chose from. I'm a sucker for chalkboards so I liked that all the beer was written on them behind the bar, but would have liked descriptions of the beer that I could drool over in my hand. A small gripe for an otherwise perfect experience. I would most happily return if ever back in Montpelier.

  • Aaron E.

I'd say it's a "four" penny taproom when it comes to the beer but I'd only give it two pennies for the food, hence the three-star review. The beer selection is fresh and excellent. The burgers are great but the other food selections I've had there have been uneven in quality. Pasta dishes in particular have seemed lackluster. It sometimes seems like the Taproom is trying too hard to serve some food that's "different." While I appreciate the effort, it isn't always working.

I have to admit I was a bit worried that this place would be too fru-fru given the menu online. However, I was more than surprised that the food was both reasonably priced and way good. We had stopped in for a snack and a drink but I was very tempted to skip our dinner reservations at another restaurant and chill here. Great local brews, good selection of craft beers, plus a couple of "chain beers". Friendly folks. Family friendly earlier in the day.

The tap room is tough to beat. The new restaurant is tough to review. It is extremely noisy. With only 11 people eating lunch while I was there, you could hardly hear the person next to you - wood floor, wood walls/seating, and a metal ceiling. What were they thinking? Food was terrific. Service slow. It is newly opened so I will give another chance.

This place is one of those places that let's see where should I start... To begin with I ordered a beer from their board when the waitress arrived I asked if that was a tester or actually my beer. When you are faced with a 3 or 4 oz. glass of beer for $7 I don't believe I was the only one to ask...wtf. So I bet with my boyfriend that the burger that we order would be the smallest burger we ever eat. For sure I was right. The menu is small, no options, it's A, B, or C. I only didn't walk out in respect to my waitress. But owners what are you thinking. Over priced, food that anyone can cook. The place is very confused between "oh uh uhh I'm fine dinning" and " oh no we not gonna be stuffy let's jazz it up and be a pub. That is one word for you, mom and and dad may be paying your rent but honest good food stays. What a let down!. Skip this place all together and go to the culinary school you will have more choices, eat better and expend less...oh wait you will pay for honest, good food.

Great beer selection and variety. The bartender was friendly and knowledgeable and enjoyed talking about beer. It's a beer bar, right? That's how it should be. This is a great place for fans of good beer. I was there in the afternoon when it was moderately busy so I don't know if it gets packed at night, but it had a pretty relaxed vibe. I'm definitely going back the next time I'm in Montpelier.

Yesterday I stop in a few times a day so I can enjoy my last drink in montpelier. I try a few things different beer and they were all pretty tasty. The menu is alittle different now that brett left but overall it still a great place to go for beer lovers. Yesterday I try their grill cheese and it was delicious. I asked them to put in the JOWL(pork cheek slices) into my grill cheese sandwich and oh boy did it tasty AWESOME. I am just drooling talking about this right now. I wanted to take a pic;s of it for my facebook collect but dam my phone ran out of battery and I think I will borrow this idea for future dishes.

Exceptionally helpful, friendly and patient waitstaff. Menu limited, but changes frequently, and is very well executed (as in, the food is great). Occasional lapses from the kitchen, but staff more than ready to take mistakes off the bill. Wish they had fish and chips.

Fantastic beer selection and the bartender was very knowledgeable about the brews. We'll be back.

Stopped in shortly after they opened on a Saturday afternoon in early January. Doesn't look like much from the outside, as the the storefront just blends in with the other businesses on Main Street. Inside though, is a friendly local bar with not many frills but plenty of good beer. Seating is bar stools only, both at the bar and around the outside of the one room. Breweriana (mostly new stuff) all around. Good music playing on the iPod; there is one TV. Taps listed on the large chalkboard included three from Hill Farmstead (Riwaka, Edward, Anna) and lots of others from VT. Beer list was a little too heavy on the Belgians/style for my taste, and aside from the HF I didn't really see anything that's hard to find elsewhere. Half-pints are available. We'd planned to have lunch here so we were a little disappointed with the size of the menu, but actually the food was very good. There are just a few simple sandwiches along with cheese and/or charcuterie plates. We both really liked our sandwiches (ham&cheese, brie&apple) but you might be better off just snacking here and eating somewhere else before/after. The sandwiches were just under $10; not bad but they don't come with fries or anything on the side. Our total was $45 for two sandwiches and four beers.

Terrific place for a beer, a soccer game and friendly companionship at the end of a work day. There is always a broad assortment of craft beers from around the country and Europe on draft with more choices in bottles. The three guys who own and run the place know their beer and do a nice job with the tone of the place and the quality of what they serve. Most of the drafts are served in their brand-specific glasses. PBR is available in its original bottles.

Amazing beer selection and very friendly staff. Check out soccer games or occasional Ween nights. Small menu of meat-centric bar food.
