Absolutely delightful stay! Innkeepers Darren and Lynne are exceptionally warm and friendly hosts. You feel like you've known them for years after just meeting them. Breakfasts were delicious! Local cod smoked bacon, homemade waffles, whipped cream, fruit, yum! We stayed in the Trout River suite overlooking the rushing Trout River in the back yard. The soothing sounds of the rushing waters lulled us into a blissful slumber. The room was meticulously clean and tastefully decorated, the fridge was stocked with beers and soda, the TV's had the full cable packages, and the parking was just feet away. Common areas are ample and conducive to nice conversation with other guests. Our doggy was a welcomed guest (no extra charge) and was offered a sanitized doggy bed along with bowls. There are a limited number of local restaurants, all of which are typical continental fare or local bar food. We recommend that if you're visiting for a few days that you bring your passports and head over the Canadian border to nearby Sutton, Quebec. (Border is about 14 miles). There are excellent bakeries and restaurants in which you can indulge. The Inn is in a remote part of Vermont however it is less than an hour's drive from Stowe. When we checked out of the Inn we headed to Stowe and found it crowded and stressed. We were already beginning to pine for the serenity we left behind at the Swann. Be aware!! The hotel policy forbids consumption of alcohol not purchased on the premises (based on VT law). However, the inn has beers and wine available at a very reasonable cost. You have 24 hour access to their selection and they anticipate that you'll respect the honor system and itemize what you've consumed upon checkout. The Inn also adds a 15% gratuity to your bill. We can't wait to return!
Came here for a wedding and the inn made it wonderful. The hosts, Derrick and Lynn are lovely hosts, committed to making us feel comfortable and at home. The breakfast food has been delicious. Delicious fluffy waffles the first day; egg frittata & bacon the second. They were excellent at meeting the dietary needs of everyone in the wedding party. The room is set up with all the comforts one would need. The fireplace heating is a great touch. The main house always has a great supply of beverages, snacks, & homemade cookies & brownies. Recommend you stay here if you want to relax and enjoy the area.
One of our best vacations ever! We travel quite a bit, and try as often as possible to stay in dog-friendly properties so we can bring our pooch. We chose Phineas Swann after receiving a recommendation from Jay Peak resort when we inquired about a dog friendly place to stay. What a great surprise to find out that Phineas is so much more than just an average B&B. We arrived after a 7 hour drive from NYC to find ourselves in a slice of heaven in Montgomery VT. We spent our time in the rear of the property in a large 1-bedroom (one of 2 floors in an entire house) situated right on the river. Easy parking, a huge balcony and tons of space. We could have easily slept 6 in our unit. It included a full kitchen (very well appointed with cookwares, a keurig, snacks, and a few beers in the fridge!), living area with electric fireplace, cable tv, dvds, wifi (reliable and strong signal) and a washer and dryer in the bathroom. Plenty of room to sit or lay around. Also, a big dog bed and feeding dishes for the pooch (and poop bags outside for the walks). We also toured the other units in the buildings and they all have their own unique charms and sense of style. We'd have been happy in any room! In the main house, Darren and Lynn are always welcoming you and cooking fresh baked goodies! The big, deep, hot jacuzzi that sits just outside the main house was a nightly stop after spending the day on the slopes of Jay Peak (which is about a 10 minute drive from Phineas). Breakfast was planned daily and included generous servings of local food products, cooked deliciously by our wonderful hosts. It really felt like we were visiting family. There are games, more dvds, books, and snacks available in the main house. They also offer very reasonable prices on great beer and a stellar and well-curated wine list. Darren and Lynn also are very familiar with the local scene (we even arranged a fantastic sports massage/deep tissue through Lynn). With the entire place decorated for the holidays, we felt immersed in the warmth of the holidays. We also had great powder on the mountain. Montgomery is a tiny town (600-1000 people depending on season) but it is friendly, safe, and within easy driving of Jay Peak, Burlington, and lots of local areas. We fell in love with Phineas Swann and will be back often.

We heard good things from the locals and decided to give the Belfry a try, and it was a great choice. We were seated at a booth near the bar and it was a bit noisy. If you have hearing issues, you may want to ask for a table in the back side of the restaurant. It was Monday, which is apparently sushi night this summer. My boyfriend is not a sushi fan, so we stuck to the pub menu on the blackboard. However, I must say some of the sushi I saw going to other tables had me incredibly jealous and impressed. I grew up eating sushi at authentic Japanese restaurants in California back in the 80s, and explored some very fine sushi restaurants while I lived in NYC, but this place looked like it could hold up a candle to the best of what I have had before - that is, if it tasted as good as it looked. We had some mozzarella sticks as an appetizer and it was okay. Nothing amazing, but they did appear to be homemade and not from frozen. My boyfriend chose the chicken souvlaki (a smaller plate) while I had the shrimp scampi on pasta. He said his souvlaki was good but left him wanting more. My dish was a bit light on the shrimp, but they were perfectly cooked and the pasta was al dente and evenly coated in the butter and garlic sauce. It was very satisfying, though i figured I could make the same dish at home for about 1/5th the menu price. The service was extremely friendly and the hostess was very gracious. We felt like we were treated as regulars even though this was our first visit. Our one regret - we had already had ice cream that day and so we chose to forego the desserts. But, oh boy, they were enticing. Save room!
My husband & I went here for our date night. The place was packed inside and out. We ordered some appetizers, mozzarella sticks & chicken wings, both super yummy. My husband tried the List Nation Craft Beer, he liked it. We shared meatloaf and chicken pesto sandwich. It was yummy. We didn't do dessert, but we will come back for another date.
Typical small town vermont pub. The food was excellent. We started with the maple wings and they were very good, not too sweet with syrup. The side salads were fresh and just the right size. They also brought us s bread basket with plenty of bread for the four of us. I had the smothered steak ( brown gravy with mushrooms & onions). The steak was cooked perfectly, and very tender, no fat to cut away. My dinner companions ate the fisherman's platter and they loved it. We shared the Maple Cream pie and it was mixed reviews. I loved it but 2 of the other diners thought it was too sweet. The service could have been a little more attentive but no major complaints there. I would eat here again.

Great selection of Vermont beers on tap. Good assortment of liquor, with some very nice top shelf stuff like Talisker. On the food: I've only tried the pub grub; the menu does have some good looking entrees as well. As for the former, the fish and chips are great; you can't go wrong with the black and bleu burger. Rob, the publican, is very friendly; so is the staff. Live music most weekends. If I had to list any flaws, it would the website: outdated - it lists "upcoming events" for 2007 - and uninspired (and has spelling errors): snowshoelodgeandpubvt.com

If I could give this place no stars I would. We sat down to breakfast at 11:15 the stop serving breakfast at noon. they took our order at 11:55. The food was cold and dry. to call the servers incompetent is an insult to incompetence everywhere. We had to get up and get our own coffee. it took an hour to get our drinks which we had to order multiple times before we received them. Do yourself a favor and eat at gas station. the food will be better and you'll get it sooner.
Every year I do a Ski trip somewhere with 15 ppl, this yard we decided on Vermont. The first couple of nights we ate at pricey restaurants which weren't that great, but our last night we were recommended to try Bernie's. And wow we are glad we did. When we first arrived and told the poor waitress that there was 16 of us, she nervously told us that she would accommodate us no matter what. The food was phenomenal and the service was even better. We found out later that we were actually eating at "Bernie's" house.. Her and her husband John, the chef, lived directly above the restaurant. All in all it's a great local place and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who's hungry and wants great service.
Stopped in while snowmobiling in the area. Food was great, will go back again.

We stopped here for a couple of beers and a late lunch before a wedding in Montgomery Center. Service was quick and super friendly. Similar to most Vermont spots, the venue has a rustic vibe to it with string lights and wood paneling and a fire place. We had the steak and cheese and poutine fries with gravy and cheese. It was really good. Prices were affordable. I'd recommend it for a pit stop on the way to Jay's Peak.
This is a great place if you need a stay over or a quick bite. Peter and his crew are top notch in my book. Thanks again for everything.
For a low-key bar after a long day on the the mountain, this works. You will run into quite a few locals, some low-key, some loud, all were nice. For the food, the classics, burgers, wings, fish and chips and others are served with some tasty waffle fries. The pub staff is friendly at The Snowshoe, in this throwback of a watering hole.
