If you could sit outside on a beautiful day, it's a relaxing dining experience with good view and soothing sound of the creek. Setting is perfect, but food is mediocre and dinner is overpriced.

Loved this place - went for Lunch and Dinner . . . on the same day. We stopped here for a quick lunch and had a fast soup and sandwich that were both delicious. We liked it so much we made reservations for dinner. Dinner was very good with a very nice menu. Prices were very good and they had 4 local brews on tap along with a nice wine list. The only complaint that we had was that as most of the tables were outside, it was chilly and very "buggy". A screened in deck and heaters would have been welcome. We sat inside so this really wasn't an issue. The highlight was when my 10 year old daughter asked the waitress if the creme brulee already has the sugar burned onto it. The chef then came out and carmelized the sugar right in front of her and explained what he was doing. All in all, the food alone was a memorable experience but we thoroughly appreciated this extra little step. We will definitely be back next year when we stay in Vt. Thanks, Chef Todd!

Visited Middlebury with my son on a tour of colleges this past week. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal, the price was right for what we got, and it was as good as home cooking for us. We are very picky eaters and love to be able to get local, organic foods when we are travelling to satisfy our needs. The service was swift, the breakfast was tasty and the herbs and spices used created a culinary experience worthy of the visit. Thanks!

How much does ambiance matter? because i'm giving Storm Cafe 4 stars just for that, because as far as setting goes i don't know if this can be beat. Located right at the bend of some river, sorry i'm not familiar with Middlebury, VT, so i have no idea what anything is called, right in the middle of a wooded area surrounded with the autumn foliage. With the air crisp but comfortable the scenery was perfect. We were first seated inside but we saw that outside seating was available so we asked to be moved, our server seemed a little peeved with that, but that was our fault, we should have asked for outside side seating when we arrived. If you get the pleasure of sitting outside for your meal here the scenery is so perfect that it will be a total distraction from the food which is pretty good in and of itself. But the river and the foliage was really the main attraction for us on this day. I heard that it is pretty much the peak season for foliage in VT right now, i didn't doubt it after this meal here. okay on to the food... My eating companions got each got the Soup of the Day which was New England Clam Chowder, it was fantastic. The clams were meaty and the broth was amazingly delicious. But what really stood out was the portion size, so 1 person ordered the cup which came in a bowl, and the other ordered a bowl which came in a basin. haha we were literally commenting how someone could wash their face in that big bowl filled to the brim with chowder. I ordered the Sirloin which was ok, but honestly not memorable. Although the mash and the green beans that came with it was really good. Apparently they shop from local markets and all of that sustainable good stuff. The service was friendly, our server knew to let us converse and only check in on us occasionally, she was much more talkative with the couple seated beside us. But that was fine. she even took a couple of pictures for us. we felt fancy sitting there with the most amazing view eating and talking and just enjoying life, good food, great company and an amazing view.

A beautiful day for an outdoor lunch on the patio along the Otter Creek. The service was attentive and the food was very good. I really enjoyed the gazpacho and El Bandito wrap. My wife had the Rustic Hearts panini. Very nice.

We were in Vermont for a wedding and were looking for a place for lunch. The Storm Cafe exceeded all expectations. They have seating overlooking Otter Creek which is worth a visit in itself. The service was both friendly and efficient. They also have lunch specials for under $10 where you can get a generous half sandwich and salad, or soup and salad. I had a fantastic chicken philly with local cheddar cheese along with a winter salad. Both were great. My lunchmates also really enjoyed their meals. The quality and value can't be beat! I highly recommend this spot.

This was our first time here as we were passing through. We came near the end of lunch but they didn't rush us. Both of our meals were good and although many of their dishes have onions my wife was able to find something. Her quiche was well prepared with a small side of greens. I ordered the special eggs Benedict and the portion was huge with a small selection of greens. A surprisingly good piece of watermelon (for the winter) hash browns and two perfectly cooked eggs with prime rib and avocado. The hollandaise was well done. Very tasty. We did not try dessert. Would live to come back in the warmer weather to sit outside by the Otter Creek which seemed more like a rushing river to me!

Went in with my wife and daughter for dinner and what a terrific spot! I cant imagine how beautiful the outdoor seating must be in good weather, but we had a wonderful time inside too! The salads are locally grown, fresher than anything and huge! The 1/2 more than does the job. The three of us had the local farm-raised chicken marsala (so fresh it was amazing), home made pasta and meatballs, and house-made ravioli. Ingredients for almost everything on the menu were sourced locally, and the result was outstanding. Fresh flavors, light and delicious. Would be a regular if we lived closer than 4 hours away! The wine list was short, but adequate, with reasonably priced choices that complement the menu. Service was warm, friendly and A+. You won't be disappointed!

Storm Cafe is definitely my favorite place for lunch in Middlebury. Their grilled salmon sandwich is absolutely amazing. Best on a summer or early fall afternoon when you can sit out on the deck and enjoy the soothing sounds of the creek flowing, birds chirping, and wind rustling through the trees.

This is the first restaurant I've ever been to in Middlebury and it's... alright. Pros: + Service and location is really good here! Drinks are served, the waiters are friendly, and it's in such a cute spot of town overlooking the river. If you come at night, it's dimly lit by candlelight and cute string lights. Unless you're outside eating, you won't actually hear the sound of the nearby waterfall though. + Lunch here is of decent price, you can get a good caesar salad and soup for about $10. It's a hard price to match in this town. Cons: - This is the big one: I find dinner to be a little too expensive and not worth the price. The menu is seasonal, so it is prone to changes, but having had the vodka tomato scallops at $24, it's just not worth it. The scallops and entrees are good, but not $20+ GOOD. If you actually want to get your money's worth, you could save some cash and eat at other restaurants (Sabai Sabai and American Flatbread spring to mind) instead for dinner. Overall, decent for lunch, meh for dinner. Just don't go in expecting to be blown away by any of their entrees.

BEST RESTAURANT IN MIDDLEBURY This is a great little restaurant, right on Otter Creek, and a perennial favorite of ours. We came here twice in a week in August and, with friends, sampled a wide variety of the fare. We had the Roasted Garlic and Potato Soup (delish). The appetizers: Vermont Fresh Artichoke & Roasted Tomato Ravioli and Heirloom Tomato & Maplebrook Mozzarella Salad. Both excellent. Dinners we tried were: Penne Carbonara, Caribbean Duck Breast, Charbroiled Chipotle BBQ Pork Chop, and the Misty Knoll Statler Chicken. Everything was very good. A bottle of Liberty School Cabernet Sauvignon went nicely with the dinners; crème brûlée for dessert. Lovely place...

Great place for lunch in town. Fast lunch time service with delicious soup + sandwich combos. Attentive and friendly staff of which I know 2 or 3 personally. I've only ever been here for lunch so I can't speak on the dinner experience but I'm sure it is top notch. The reuben and chicken philly cheese steak sadwiches are awesome.

What a sweet little place! They have a small but distinguished lunch menu with the options of mixing soup, salad, and/or sandwich together as a special. Excellent portions and fresh ingredients. Friendly staff and beautiful view of the water if sitting outdoors.

This was one of the most wonderful lunches I've had in a while. The potato soup alone is a reason to go. But all the other options were delicious, too. I had the soup and half sandwich deal and a citizens cider. The help was very good. Attentive but not domineering. Prices were reasonable. It was very crowded when we got in there, but the staff handled it all very well. We were seated quickly. (It was about 12:15 on a Saturday.) By a bit after 1 it was nearly empty again.

Been wanting to try this place for a while since we live only about 15 mins drive away. Got a great table outside by the water, which was perfect since it was such a beautiful day. We ordered our drinks to start, which came in a reasonable amount of time. Great local beer selection. Then we ordered our Flatbread & Hummus appetizer and our meals. I ordered the Storm Duck and my wife ordered the Chicken Statler. After about 30 mins we see our appetizer get served to the wrong table. We watched the wait staff converse about it and keep glancing in our direction. Starving by this point, they finally explained the situation to the wrong table and offered to let them keep it at no cost. Needless to say, we had to wait at least another 10 mins to get our appetizer and we still had to pay full price. The meals were excellent and were served in a timely manner. We decided on desert, but once again were left waiting for a server to take our order. Great food and atmosphere, but lacking in the service dept. Hope it's better the next time. This review would've been 4 stars easily, had the service been better.

Was very impressed with the café. The outside seating was very nice, could be very romantic or a great setting for a girls night out. No liquor, just beer and wine. I thought the food was reasonably priced. Salad, entrée, drink and dessert for $30. I did get the lighter portion of the carbonara pasta with chicken, but I still couldn't finish it. The waitress was very nice and did a good job of clearing the table after each course, but service was slow. Took a long time to get my salad and was finished with that for a little while before the meal came out. The restaurant wasn't that busy, so not sure why. Everything was fresh though and the entrée came out hot. I would definitely go back.

The cafe is amazing...food, service, ambiance, everything! I came into town on business and decided to eat here based on other reviews. I started with a fresh greens salad which was as fresh as I've had. The dressing, the frenched vegetables, even the slight salt was prefect. I then ordered the Louisiana Style Succotash with Misty Knoll Chicken, which arrived 15-20 min later looking right off the cover of Emeril's newest cookbook. The only problem was that I don't eat dairy and it looked like it had a good helping of cream. I politely confirmed and offered to pay, seeing as though I hadn't explained my allergy. They refused, apologized and offered me something else. I still felt bad and tried to pay but they insisted! I ordered the Angus Sirloin, which was my original intent and it literally melted in my mouth. If it sounds like I'm exaggerating, I assure you I'm not. The Storm blew me away in every way and gets my vote as the best spot in lower VT.

My favorite restaurant in Middlebury. Roasted garlic and potato soup is always delicious, creme brulee is usually well done. Great VT beer on trap and good wines, to. What's not to love?

Middlebury is a really cute little town in Vermont I could totally see myself in. They have the covered bridges, a cute downtown filled with shops, the white steeple church. Picturesque Vermont. Storm Cafe is nestled down a one way street with an amazing deck overlooking the water. My mom and I tried to sit out there, but it was full and we were starving. We both ordered the soup/sandwich combo with 1/2 jerk pork wrap with pineapple salsa (the Marley, how clever). She had the potato garlic soup, and I had the tomato. I love that the soup was served in a mug, reminded me of Grandma's house. Very good and filling. My only complaint was the iced tea, did not taste good, so I gave it to my mom (she thought it tasted fine) and drank water.

This restaurant is located in the historic Frog Hollow mill in the basement with a patio view of the river and enormous waterfall. For me, the best thing about this restaurant was the fantastic view from the patio where we dined. The service here was friendly and very attentive. The menu reflected an emphasis on local and fresh ingredients. While the philosophy and specifically the location/view of this place were great, the menu lacked creativity and while the items we had were good, there was nothing outstanding about the food. They had a very conventional soup, salad and sandwiches lunch menu that was very short on vegetarian options. Our party tried essentially everything on the menu that was vegetarian. The salads used fresh quality ingredients but these combinations turned out fairly predictable. The hummus was freshly made and tasty but also predictable and the roasted eggplant was hardly seasoned. I can recommend this place for anyone wanting fairly conventional food prepared with fresh local ingredients in a beautiful location but not for anyone who is interested in a culinary adventure.

One of the better restaurants in Middlebury. My colleague took me here for lunch right before I left for Spain. They have a great deck overlooking Otter Creek where I throughly enjoyed my roasted garlic and potato soup. I also had the 'Berber', pan-fried salmon "dredged in African spices" with lemon-basil aioli, tomato and lettuce. Great presentation and taste! Needless to say I'll be coming back before too long Great little cafe to sit and enjoy a great meal, do not miss it!

Stopped here for lunch on our way to Burlington. This is a really nice spot with a wonderful view of Otter Creek. The bacon on The Dude sandwich is sone of the best I can remember, and I'd come here again just to get a bowl of the potato garlic soup. The soup is fantastic. Fast service, too.

Went there based on Yelp reviews while in town and at first I was feeling a bit disappointed because the lunch menu seemed a bit pedestrian. But both the soup and the chicken sandwich I had were far better than their very straightforward description implied: the quality of the ingredients but also the execution of the cooking were really surprisingly good. Also a decent wine list, which you wouldn't guess just walking in the place. Quite satisfying. I was also impressed at how the service staff kept their heads on straight right in the middle of a serious crush. I was sitting up front on a stool and had a chance to see the manager handle a couple of fairly abrasive folks who wanted a table right now or were angry about it being a 20 minute wait, and she was impressively professional.

Wonderful, fresh fresh food in a great setting overlooking the river and falls from old Frog Hollow Mill. They call it a cafe, but it's a full-blown restaurant with great food, larger portions and fresh / local ingredients. Staff is a bit slower when they get busy, but very attentive and friendly when they get to you! Get outside seating (inside's a bit cramped / dark) on a nice summer day but be sure you're a smaller party as best seats are for couples! Try the Duck ... AMAZING, best I've had! Simply roasted fat/skin side down ... melted in my mouth! Mussel starter was fantastic with lemongrass, ginger and tons of garlic! Local salmon specials are good too! Desert is the only disappointment with very little local / seasonal to be had.

I went here for lunch based on the great reviews, but was disapointed. I ordered the Frisco chick, a wrap with chicken salad. There was plenty of chicken, everything was fresh, but the flavor was very bland. The side salad suffered because a dill pickle was planted on top of it and the pickle juice did not mix well with the dressing. My main gripe was with the service. I was greeted and given a table promptly, the server took my order, I got my food and then....nothing. Other servers checked in with their tables, mine never came back Eventually, the busgirl cam and asked if I wanted a dessert menu. By then, I had been staring at an empty wine glass, an empty water glass, and an pushed-aside plate for 7 minutes ( I timed it). Would have loved a glass of iced tea if I had seen the invisible waitress. Many restaurants treat single diners well, knowing they may come back with friends. Others just treat them as taking up table space that could have gone to a larger party. I may try Storm Cafe once more to see if I get better service.

Top spot. Garlic soup. Really good. Only had it once because THEY DIDN'T HAVE IT AGAIN. Or something. Lunches = sandwiches. Good. Grab an order of garlic soup if they have it. My friend brought me here for dinner on my birthday and I think I ate quail. It was pleasant. Then we ate chocolate cake. It was pleasant. Two of my friends used to come here for the...clams? Oysters? Something seafoody that I couldn't eat. They looked somewhat disgusting consuming the dish, but methinks it was pleasant. When I lived in Middlebury, Storm Cafe was rarely open. Really. Maybe that was only during winter. But maybe not. Looking at their website, methinks this is no longer an issue.

Storm is one of my favorite restaurants in the extended Middlebury area. Sure it's a bit pricey for a casual dinner, but the food is well worth the cost and and the atmosphere is cute. The carbonara is a classic, though there menu changes seasonally. Really a great place for food lovers!

  • Cathy W.

Friendly smiles and helpful questions. A lovely twinkly deck overlooking the creek with the sun sinking low. Mussels in a broth so good there isn't enough bread to soak it up. We fight the urge to upend the bowl and slurp every last drop. The smoked trout cobb is worth the wait (our waitress forgot it). The Misty Knoll Chicken is so memorable that we order it again and again. Pasta De Mare: scallops shrimp and other luscious seafood salty pancetta cheesey parm sauce beans spinach: it works! Combinations that only a chef could imagine. Coconut gelato - yum. Food, ambiance, waitstaff, location all add up to a highly satisfying dinner treat.

For Middlebury, this is a 4-star restaurant. I've been a patron of the Storm Cafe for years, and while I still miss the black bean burger they used to have on their lunch menu years ago, the penne carbonara (without the pancetta, making it vegetarian-friendly) has been a favorite for as long as I can remember. You also won't want to miss out on their roasted garlic and potato soup, which is deliciously rich and creamy (but according to the waitress has hardly any actual cream in it, so maybe it's not quite as calorie-heavy as it tastes?). The banana cream pie is a nice finish to your lunch or dinner - rumor has it that many have tried to get the recipe by submitting requests to Gourmet magazine, but the chef wouldn't part with his secrets... But don't be discouraged if you're a baker - I use Emeril's banana cream pie recipe in an oreo crust thanks to the Storm's inspiration, and it's a big hit every time.

The best meal I've had in weeks! What I would expect to find in a highly rated, big city restaurant, only better because it's a small local place with fresh ingredients. I ate chicken, which I usually don't like and mashed potatoes, which I never like and loved both. Why did I order a plate of food I don't like? Because of the "decorations". It was served with shredded beets, greens, blood oranges and candied orange peel, in some sort of orange reduction. And the broccolini (a natural hybrid of the cabbage family, a cross between broccoli and kai-lan (chinese broccoli)-in case you're wondering, I was, so I looked it up ) was cooked perfectly. For dessert I had to order the s'mores cake. I have to order anything with s'mores in the name... and I was not disappointed. To top off the experience, we walked outside to hear the rushing river and smell fireplaces. Ahhhh....

This is one of the best restaurants in Middlebury. They offer speedy delicious inexpensive lunches and leisurely gourmet dinners with a good wine list. Their menu offers some organic selections. During the summer, sit outdoors and enjoy the roar of the waterfall and views of Otter Creek. The staff is always friendly. The restaurant caters to upscale clients and parents of Middlebury College students.

My husband and I popped into Middlebury for the day and just asked someone, where's good to eat lunch? And someone recommended Storm Cafe. I'm so glad they did, because I'm not sure we would have found it or eaten there if not, and it was SOO delish! Very simple but so so yummy food and great prices, too I thought. Half sandwich (which was amazing) and a super fresh half salad for only $8. And great little view!

I love the Storm Cafe as one of my favorite spots for a nice dinner or lunch in Middlebury, the town. It's a warm, cosy place with a few tables, friendly service. The food is consistently great. For those students who can't stand more pizza at Ross and for locals who want a nice night out, Storm Cafe is THE place for dining in town.

Came here for a work lunch and I think my hopes were too high. It was busy, and the staff clearly showed it...everyone seemed flustered. The food was delicious. I am not a huge fan of the building itself...very cramped and loud. I am excited to try this place again come summer, because I think it'd be much more enjoyable dining outside and for dinner.

This is the best place in town. Fresh, local food, that youre not paying that much more compared to other places in town that serve frozen cheap stuff. Family owned an operated, great location, great waitstaff. Try the duck, and the garlic and potato soup of course.

  • Lady F.

I feel that the service staff could be a little bit more attentive. I had to call our waitress over a couple of times for a drink refill/my condiment request. When I was asked first to some fresh pepper (which was a nice), to which I replied yes - our server peppered my friend's dish and then walked away without peppering my plate. I ordered the eggs benedict and my eggs were overcooked/almost hard boiled.

This is the best lunch/brunch eatery in Middlebury. Sure, there are other restaurants and delis, but Storm Cafe has managed to achieve consistently tasty, high-quality food that eludes most other places in the area. Oops, I forgot American Flatbread, which is also very good and consistent, but only open for lunch on Saturdays. Storm Cafe's outside dining space is a nice option when weather permits. Consistently good sandwiches, salads, soups and brunch are what keep me coming back to Storm over the other eateries in the area. The fact everything is served fresh and not stale and with premium ingredients, differentiates it from its competition. Middlebury does not have haute cuisine options. The closest it gets is the Swift House Inn for dinner and that can sometimes be hit or miss. In terms of consistently high-quality brunch and lunch food, the Storm Cafe is really it. For other good food options in the area there is always Cafe Provence in Brandon (about 30 minutes south), Mary's Restaurant in Bristol, about 30 minutes northeast. I don't include the new Middlebury burger joint that was started by the owners of the Black Sheep Bistro, because although I love the setting and decor, the food quality isn't consistent.

It's been a few months since I ate here, but I suppose that the memory of a wonderful experience and the desire to return again says it all. Friendly people, a locals flavor, a charming setting and a great breakfast / lunch make this is a Middlebury standard.

House special Omelette with Crab meat ( actual crab meat), spinach and cream cheese!! Friendly, warm atmosphere. Tables close to the kitchen give us a feeling like eating home-cooked meal straight out of the stove. Secret little place in town!

We were delighted to find this cafe on a cloudy day in August. It had covered seating outside and we were able to watch the small river, ducks, and birds as we ate. The food was consistently delicious, attractive, and fresh. The owner/hostess and our waitress were both friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable. The chef is the other owner and his menu and specials were among the best we have seen for the price. My husband ordered the hamburger on a brioche. He seems to judge many restaurants by their hamburgers and this was the best! I had a southwestern omelette and squash soup which were both delicious. The quiche had excellent crust and flavorful "innards".

Very good food, especially for a college town. But, it's New England, and the food is usually way above average up there. Massive portions. Excellent entrees, fine bread, great soup, decent salad, in a nebulous American/European/Italian/French mash-up style. If you're up in Middlebury, this is where to eat.
