I recently enjoyed an extended stay in Northwestern Vermont and was pleased to find The Inn at Buck Hollow Farm still rules. There were new kitties to meet and the other guests I met this time were really nice people (Barbara T.!) with great stories to share over breakfast. As far as breakfasts go, they continued to wow me. One morning I had an amazing cranberry orange muffin with cranberry oatmeal. Another favorite included vegan maple vanilla cream French toast. The veggie sausage was better than ever and the fruit cup always refreshing. The manager, Cheri, had some great suggestions for local haunts that I hadn't visited and had lots of fun stories to tell about the inn and goings-on. There was a family that booked up all of the other inn rooms at one point to have a relaxing birthday celebration. I thought this was a great idea and may do the same in the future. I wasn't sure what to expect of the weather and foliage when we arrived at the end of October, but I was pleased to see there was still plenty of color, and unseasonably mild temps. I enjoyed taking pictures of one of the beautiful trees on the land of the inn during my stay, capturing the full-blown foliage, to the snow-cover, to bare. This goes to show that any time of the year is a great one to visit. Sign up for their newsletter to get all the rate specials that aren't advertised elsewhere!
On the Farm's web page under 'specials' it notes that during specified weekdays the rate, if mentioned when making a reservation, would be 50% off the listed rate. So, on that basis I called, mentioned the web special and was told that there was availability at the special rate, but I was asked to call back in 15 minutes because the person I was speaking with couldn't make the reservation at that time. I did call back in 15 minutes, but was promptly told there were no rooms available for the dates I had earlier been assured were available. I have no way of knowing if the rooms were available or not at the 'special' price, but it is my assumption that I was told there was not availability because they were hoping to get a full paying client. If that is their goal, to have all customers pay full price, then they should be honest and get rid of the 'specials' listed on the web site.
The owners are friendly enough, but they lost me at hello when we asked for an extra comforter and some extra pillows and were told, flat out, "We don't have any." I'm not a hospitality guru, but that seems whack to me. Things got worse the next morning at breakfast when I asked if it would be possible to get some egg whites. The cook told me "We don't do special orders." (Ok, that's sort of fair. My fault for not asking ahead of time). Then, my 10 year old son, in deciding between pork, chicken and veggie sausages asked the cook "How many sausages do I get?" She looked him right in the eye and said "You get two." And oh yeah, the wi-fi didn't work. The wi-fi didn't work. Seriously, the wi-fi didn't work. To me, that's on the level of "The electricity was out." I really think this may have been my last B&B experience. Because the fact is, you can look at photos and read Yelp reviews. But until you step foot into someone's house, it's impossible to know what's up. And by then, it's usually 10p at night and they've already swiped your credit card. B&B's are a box of chocolates. Except when you bite a lousy one, you can't put half back. And this one left me with a bitter taste.
